Willard Motley: A Forgotten Master.......2006-10-08
Of course there are writers that use their brains, and writers that write with their hearts...Willard Motley spills his guts all over the pages in every one of his four novels.
I first read KNOCK ON ANY DOOR when I was a freshman in high school, and got sent home with a letter to my parents for bringing "unacceptable reading material to school"!!! I have read that book at least three more times, and each time it is a belly punch. The Bogart movie did not do justice to this fine work.
I did not know Motley was African-American, until after I finished his thrid novel.
Willard Motley was not just a great novelist, he was what the heart and soul of this Nation should be.
first book.......2003-11-12
I read this book 41 years ago , i was not very well educated my school only taught religion and self preservation, i left at 15 . One day i found this book on a bus and took it home it was on the shelf for a month or two then one night i started reading my first novel i could not put it down i found a new pleasure in life instead of going out every night hanging round with the gang and breaking the law for kicks i changed and i put it down to this book knock on any door, i found the author understood my feelings and it was so easy to understand thank you Willard Mottley
You have the wrong Chicago Writer.......2003-10-12
I'm sorry to offer a counter opinion amongst all the enthusiasm, but if you are interested in this subject you really should read "Never Come Morning," by Nelson Algren. KOAD is an OK novel, neither great nor terrible. And I don't want to disuade you from buying it. However, it pales in comparison to NCM, a FAR superior novel written by a FAR superior writer. Put KOAD in your basket and then RUN, don't walk, to the Nelson Algren section and buy Never Come Morning. Now you have a one good and one GREAT novel in your basket.
Astonished.......2003-01-26
I find it astonishing that the reviews of this title and also the reviews for "A Stone for Danny Fisher" are so similar, and echo my feelings about these two books. Having grown up in NYC, though not in the same circumstances, I found these coming of age stories fascinating. It is almost 50 years since I read them and suddenly find myself wanting to revist them to see if my reactions are the same. So many of the reviews here echo this sentiment so I am going to read both of them again. I have recently acquired copies through eBay. If you have never read these two books I would recommend that you check out the other reviews here and get a copy of each
This is the best book I have ever read.......2002-02-25
I have read many books from romance novels to classics and this is the best book I have ever read. I could not put this down and I found myself so involved in it I cried at the end. I would also recommend the sequel, Let No Man Write My Epitaph. If you only read one book, read this one.

Awesome Sequel.......2006-11-08
The Darksteel Eye (Mirrodin Cycle: Book 2)
By: Jess Lebow
This is the sequel to The Moons of Mirrodin and continues the adventures of Glissa the elf, Slobad the Goblin, and Bosh the golem. Glissa and her firends travel across Mirrodin to try and find allies to fight Memnarch, the guardian of Mirrodin. In this book, Glissa learns that her sword is part of a set that she must recover and activate in order to have a fighting chance against Memnarch. While journeying to complete the "Kaldra Champion" she encounters some new and old friends as well as new and old enemies. The vedalkan leader Lord Pontifex is still in pursit of Glissa and is determined to kill her at all costs while Malil, Memnarch's "aide" attempts to capture the elusive elf. The fight continues on in the salvation of Mirrodin.
This is another great MTG book, I totally loved it. It was a great read and was very hard for me to put down, hence the quick review for this book. Though it is great, it does have its share of sad parts, but still an exciting read. 10/10 for this author. Though I liked the way the other autor titled the chapters.
Zero the Hero's Review.......2005-02-23
The Darksteel Eye
Jess Lebow
ISBN 0-7869-3140-X
Imagine a peaceful world where the flowers bloom magically and cute little animals prance about freely in harmony. Now take this world, turn it upside down, add lots of metal, mix in a few grotesque zombies, and massive armies of blue squid soldiers. This messed up world is where Glissa lives.
Glissa, a young viridian elf, has been torn away from her family and friends. Together, with the help of her companions Bosh, the Iron Golem, the Goblin Tinkerer, and Slobad, they seek revenge on the creature that destroyed Glissa's life. They encounter many obstacles on their journey across the harsh regions of Mirrodin, constantly being held up by the seemingly endless vedalken army and the horde of mechanized killing machines, the levelers. All controlled by the keeper of Mirrodin, Memnarch. Also, making important friends along the way, such as the fierce viridian wolf, Al-Hayat, and the wizard Bruenna.
The Darksteel Eye, the second of the fantasy Mirrodin cycle books, is an outstanding tale of magic and adventure. The author, Jess Lebow uses a unique style of writing, giving you the story from different characters points of view, so you know exactly what is going on. In this novel, there are lots of magical battles, character conflicts, descriptions of the characters emotions and feelings, and unusual plot twists and turn arounds.
The Darksteel Eye is compelling, suspenseful, and overall well written. Readers of the last Mirrodin Cycle book by Will McDermont will enjoy this tide turning novel even more. This brilliant novel is for anybody who loves fantasy tales or magical stories and anybody who can stay bound to earth while their minds drift away in a fantasy world.
Same ole, same ole... Running and fighting...........2004-10-03
"The Darksteel Eye" was a fairly one dimensional book. There is not very much too it, except for basically rehashing the first book in the cycle, "The Moons of Mirrodin." Running away from the enemies, searching for items that are in places the characters have already been, except they wern't "ready" to understand the items use, or "wouldn't believe it."
This book has a severe time disorientation. It is so hard to follow time because it will take many chapters for the characters to go from, say, the plains to the swamp, while then it takes them only a chapter break to go from the center of Mirrodin to the forests on the surface. It seems the Mirrodin block is all about visiting the five mana sources (plains, swamp, islands, mountains, and forests) because in everybook they somehow, for some reason, need to run to all of them, and fight the same creatures in all of them. There is always, ALWAYS, fighting going on, and it gets very old because the fights are not that engaging.
However, despite the one dimensional characters and plot, there is one moment in the book that I felt some serious emotion for the "bad guy." I really felt for him, and had a lot of empathy for him. It was an extremely sad part, for me.
They also find an item that wasn't even in the cardset for "Darksteel." This item didn't come out on card until the next set, "A Fifth Dawn."
Despite the flaws in this book, I am still going to read the next book because I am interested in the final interaction between the heroes and Memnarch, and then, as the back of the book states, the planeswalker Karn, who created Mirrodin. Hopefully it won't be a lot of running to every part of the world in some undescript amount of time, and unneccesary battles up until the last couple chapters - but I'm not holding my breath....
Worst Book Ever.......2004-06-22
Don't even bother with this one. All it is is a bunch of running, fighting, and whining, repeated over and over again. The characters are all boring and one dimensional. Go read the Brothers' War or something.
Darksteel Eye.......2004-06-08
This book was quite boring. Mirrodin was pretty slow too but this one was just hard to finish even though is was about 300 pages long. One problem I noticed from the time I picked up the book was that it was a different author from who wrote Mirrodin. I mean come on! HOw can you make a succesful block with 3 different authors(Fifth DAwn has a different author as well).
Also theres not enough characters, you get tired of just reading about Glissa, Bosh, Slobad, and the wolf(forgot his name) running away from nim and Vedalken. And they are constantly fighting and running away all through the book. It gets kind of old after awhile. I don't really even feel like finishing up the series.
If you hadn't start reading the series yet dont! Read the Onslauhgt block and legends block instead.

Super Reader.......2007-08-31
Dumarest is searching, and no-one believes him when he tells them he is from a planet called earth that circles a star called sun.
However, he does raise the odd eyebrow when he beats a supremely good professional fighter, and catches an assassin animal with what appears to be superhuman, or at least completely subconscious and instictual reflexes.
He gets mixed up in the politics of the ruling class on Gath, and death follows in his footsteps, until he uncovers the cyber clan manipulators at the heart of it. He is little closer to his goal, though.
The Dumerest Saga.......2002-06-13
First in a series of adventures with Earl Dumerest, searching the galaxy for his lost and now mythical home, Earth.
Set in the far distant future this saga is sadly underated, due mainly I believe to it's slowly unfolding story (Earl finds clues few and far between to the where abouts of his lost home) and it's space opera quailty (dealing in no giant sci fi themes but just concerning Dumerest's galactic journey).
It's the quality that's important here though, not the scale of things. Each story is well written and exciting, and you're quickly caught up in his quest for Earth.

Book Description
The Araweté are one of the few Amazonian peoples who have maintained their cultural integrity in the face of the destructive forces of European imperialism. In this landmark study, anthropologist Eduardo Viveiros de Castro explains this phenomenon in terms of Araweté social cosmology and ritual order. His analysis of the social and religious life of the Araweté—a Tupi-Guarani people of Eastern Amazonia—focuses on their concepts of personhood, death, and divinity.
Building upon ethnographic description and interpretation, Viveiros de Castro addresses the central aspect of the Arawete's concept of divinity—consumption—showing how its cannibalistic expression differs radically from traditional representations of other Amazonian societies. He situates the Araweté in contemporary anthropology as a people whose vision of the world is complex, tragic, and dynamic, and whose society commands our attention for its extraordinary openness to exteriority and transformation. For the Araweté the person is always in transition, an outlook expressed in the mythology of their gods, whose cannibalistic ways they imitate. From the Enemy's Point of View argues that current concepts of society as a discrete, bounded entity which maintains a difference between "interior" and "exterior" are wholly inappropriate in this and in many other Amazonian societies.

Book Description
Eleven-year old Jeanne Marie, daughter of an American military officer stationed in post war Germany, is abducted and raped. Life is forever altered as she wakes from this experience with an unwelcome dark gift. The haunting memoirs of this nationally acclaimed clairvoyant are based on her true experiences, as she is compelled to take on the inconceivable task of helping lost children by “seeing” through the eyes of missing and murdered victims. In bone chilling detail, Jeanne Marie recounts her involvement in several sensational cases, among them, an untold story of Adam Walsh. After years of the personally painful and terrifying ordeal of living through these deaths, Jeanne Marie reluctantly agrees to help a DEA agent find a missing murder witness. But as she peers through the eyes of this missing girl, Jeanne Marie unwittingly finds herself entangled in Miami’s subterranean world of world of white slavery, drugs, murder and Afro-Caribbean mysteries. When Jeanne Marie is initiated into the secret priesthood of Santeria, her story escalates into a supernatural thriller as she learns what this clandestine community expects of her in return.
