One can't help but feel saddened at the feud between the Barragans and the Monsalves, which is the premise of this story. The characters are colorful and emotionally riveting... you actually feel sorry for Mani, who has to choose between loyalty to a long-held traditiion or the wishes of his expectant wife. I think Laura Restrepo is one of the most talented writers of our generation, and she is able to weave fact and fiction, fantasy and reality into an incredible tale of lust, greed, vengeance and filial duty. Utterly amazing story!

i approach magical realism with as much skepticism permitted this rational being, but leopard in the sun only hints at the unseen to provide a lyrical and haunting saga of colombia's own hatfield and mccoy blood feud. the writing is pitch perfect, the characters limned to symbolic fullness, the plot a potboiler. combine west side story, scarface, with some premodern juju, and you might arrive at the sense of this wonderful book.

Robert Plamondon has packed more great information about chick brooding into this book than can be found in any other current "how to" poultry book. The author combines his own chick brooding experiences with still valuable material from out-of-print poultry books, and shows the reader how to apply it using new technology. It is well illustrated with both old and new photos. This book is a must have if you want to raise chicks. I wish it had been available when I first started, but I have it now!

Best book on brooding chicks.......2003-03-22

It's about time someone compiled a book on how to brood chickens properly. Robert took his many years of experience and knowledge, and also his old library of out of print books and compiled a very detailed yet concise book that will help you have the greatest success or improve your past success to a higher level. I would recommend this book to anyone who is brooding chicks in numbers from 10 to 100,000. Thanks Robert for putting together this information.

Great Advice from a Trustworthy Source.......2003-03-22

Plamondon raises chickens and eggs at his successful Oregon pastured poultry operation. He is also a respected member of the internet poultry mail groups.

He has gleaned the best of the past--tried and true information--the almost lost "Secrets of the Past Poultry Masters".The Ohio Brooder plans alone are worth the price of the volume. The guidelines are suitable for all climates and breeds.

The book is strong on up-to-date nutritional and disease control information, and explainations of what does and does not work.

Easy to understand charts and illustrations help the novice and experienced poultry person to grasp the concepts. Plamondon writes in an easy to read, engaging style.

Highly recommended!

Obvious this is not a serious book. But the short stories are fun to read and are easy read for some quick amusement. The stories a matriarchal which is refreshing change of pace from the old damsel in distress. I give this three stars.

Very funny continuation in the "Chicks In Chainmail" series. These are short stories sending up the heroic fantasy genre, all with female protagonists, and many written from a feminine perspective.

That right, please don't eat or drink while reading this book you might choke! These stories are so funny, and it's hard to put down. I enjoyed this book and all the others like it, Chicks in Chained Mail, The Chicks in the Mail and so on. Once you read one, you want the read all the rest. All I can say is sit back and enjoy!!!

I finally have my copy of AD, and I'm happy.
If you have already read the e-comic you have tu buy it! specially if you want to know what happen before Lexx meet Chel.
If you haven't read it, you're missing a great story ( what I like to call a perfect combination between shoujo and shonen)with action, romance, and shirtless aliens XD this comic it's the begin of all that. I't really worth to have alien dice in paper.

This is a great book for Scandinavian recipes used EVERYDAY in America. There are tons of cookbooks for those special occasions, but the recipes which are hard to find are the ones that grandma didn't write down; she used them everyday; no need to refer to a recipe card! I found SIMPLE recipes that were used when the goal was to just feed the family, not to "entertain." But these are GOOD recipes, quite literally, like "Grandma used to make." If you're looking for a recipe that isn't fancy, but a family favorite, this is the place to find it!

A Wonderful Book for Scandinavian-Americans ! ! !.......1999-04-29

You won't be sorry you picked up this book. I've read two other books by Carrie Young, and they are all just a treat to read. I grew up eating this kind of food, lovingly cooked by my Norwegian grandmother. I thoroughly enjoyed reading these recipes and accompanying stories. The stories are often hilarious, and they all ring true for those of us with similar backgrounds. I'm picking up another copy of this book as a birthday gift for a relative, I know she'll love it!!! A great book for Scandinavians, for persons from the midwest, or for anyone else!!!

Let's just put it this way, I read the whole book in one sitting. In fact, I couldn't put the book down. The author wrote short histories and included recipes to go along with the family history. Of course along the way, she told some mighty funny stories, especially about how one of her sisters managed to set the out house on fire. Really funny. I haven't laughed so hard while reading a book in sometime. A definite buy --- even if I haven't tried her recipes. Most recipes are common to Scandinavian cooking and Scandinavian American cooking.

Many digital designers, even fans of Macromedia Dreamweaver, use Adobe Photoshop/ImageReady and Illustrator for image creation and manipulation, and constantly go back and forth between applications. In this latest Bible, Dreamweaver power user Joseph Lowery proved to himself that Macromedia Fireworks, which handles both vector and bitmap art, is an effective replacement for those applications, increasing both productivity and creativity.

As with others in the series, the Fireworks 3 Bible works well both for beginners who need guidance in learning the software and experienced users looking for a good reference manual. Although the book isn't tutorial-based, you perform step-by-step tasks along the way, and the index is thorough enough to help you find solutions to problems.

The book is not written as a face-off between Fireworks and other applications, but you'll quickly discover tasks for which Fireworks has the edge, particularly in Web production. For example, methods for creating hot spots and sliced GIFs are similar to those in Photoshop/ImageReady, but here we learn how to use the Fireworks Insert > Hotspot or Insert > Slice option to encompass an entire object instantly, including all of the drop shadow or other effects. A single click + key combination wins over a click + drag any day.

Fireworks is included in the Dreamweaver Studio package, and the construction of the application fits the Macromedia model. This is most apparent when creating rollovers; Fireworks uses Behaviors, while ImageReady uses layers and a rollover/animation panel. Lowery is adept at explaining the whys along with the hows, and the chapter on activating Fireworks with Behaviors clearly explains this method and gives a firm foundation on how Behaviors work in Dreamweaver, Flash, and, on a much larger scale, Director.

There's not much to complain about in this excellent book, except for a small but confusing organizational choice in the step-by-step instructions: a more intuitive organization would have been to have the "Notes," which offer advice and caveats, precede the step to which they refer, instead of following it. Good Book for learning fireworks........2000-11-14

The book is good for learning how to do most if not all of the fireworks basics. It also covers a few advanced topics, but not in enough depth.

The book is the only one on the market so if your looking for another resource, try the manual.

Otherwise, I would suggest it.

Nice! But could have been a little better!.......2000-10-29

This was a fairly good book. But, I found myself getting lost and confused several times while reading. I have never used Fireworks 3, and I have not used any other sort of graphics design program before. So I am new to graphics design. I found the book to be very helpful but confusing in a couple of chapters. I did have a few problems with the book. The first couple of chapters throw all the menus and tool options at you right off the bat. It kinda blew my mind, and I almost had a melt down! One last thing I didn't like about the book is the constant pointers to using Fireworks with Macintosh. I am ofcourse a Windows user, so I found the constant references to Mac pointless. I will remain a Windows user until the day I die, so I could of done without the references to Mac in the book. Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Moreover, I would recomend this book to anyone who wants to learn a quick and easy graphics design program such as Fireworks!

Not quite as good as it could be.......2000-09-20

I recognize that this is probably the most comprehensive book on Fireworks 3, but I am a little disappointed in it. There is lots of good information. It is sometimes overwhelming. There are examples in the book that you just can't follow along with. They give you the completed exercise but why not give you the starting graphics, give you directions and let you create the finished product yourself. I was also disappointed in several chapters on the CD ROM that didn't seem to have the correct files as the chapters in the book. So I decided to go to their web site to see if they had corrections. When I went to the site identified in the book, it was the site for the Fireworks 2 book. The book is an invaluable resource and should be in anyone's collection if they are working with Fireworks 3, but, in my opinion, this is not a 5 star book.

Great intro to design for developers.......2000-09-19

With my background being primarily in database and application development, reading the Fireworks 3 Bible was somewhat of a sidestep for me. For quite a while I have been writing ASP pages to serve as front ends to my databases-- all the rollovers and DHTML I used was hand-coded. Though fun, writing such things out manually is anything but speedy. Enter Fireworks! Not only is Fireworks speeding up my development, the work I produce is of a decidedly higher order.

The Fireworks 3 Bible is the only serious work out there on Fireworks. Luckily it's a good tech manual. I have hardly any background in graphic design, so I sat down and read this book cover to cover (if you know Photoshop/Illustrator you should be able to skim and pick up just the details you need). It was great to get an overview of vector graphic and image editing-- I feel as if I could pick up other Macromedia/Adobe products and fudge my way through basic designs.

I would recommend this book to any web developer. My approach to web development has been completely altered.

There is no doubt at all that Lowery not only has the indepth knowledge about the subject but the fact that the fluent,lucid and fantastic manner in which he explains the complete Fireworks subject in nothing short of amazing. Very few computer gurus can teach what they know, I mean teach well, and without doubt Lowery is one of them. If you are knew to fireworks,or at the intermidiate level,this is the book which after reading, you can afford to add the word "GURU" in your title. If you are looking to pick up Fireworks fast,have no time to waste through fat books, EVEN THEN,do NOT miss out this brilliant book.Skimming through section 1 of this book should be enough to help you working efficiently with Fireworks menu and toolbars.I mentioned this point cause I myself was under tremendous pressure from my manager to pick up the Fireworks stuff for the projects,and initialy had opted for the "Firworks fast and easy web development book" so I could immediately pick up the tool.Wrong Choice.I gave up reading that book within 30 minutes of opening the first page.

This book guides you thro the steps involved in familiarizing with the Fireworks basics and then moves on to the deeper and extensive stuff which you can do with Fireworks. The first 136 pages are slow and you may feel like throwing away the book.DONT.The real fun starts after the 136 pages provided you have read well upto that part. after 136 pages its nothing short of a high speed Bond movie chase. Each chapters/articles are carefully detailed with enough of juices to drink which would last a lifetime. Basic chapters like "managing color"(in my opinion a very fundamental principle to learn and pick to avoid making amess of your website),'choosing strokes',"composing text" and many more - form the Second section of "Mastering tools".This section is a beginner's delight. The author then moves on to more advanced sections like "acheiving effects" , programming with fireworks(if you need it), and many more.

The book is great... the video was decent.......2001-03-08

If you are new to Dreamweaver, or have been struggling with it, this is the best book written to date. Formatted as a learning book, rather than a bible, it takes you through enough information to get you started. There are, however, too many features of DW to print without resorting to a strait reference book so when you finish this, you'll still have plenty to learn.

I actually went through this book using Dreamweaver Ultradev 4, so if you don't want to wait for their new version you should be fine. As a PC user, it was slightly annoying looking at screenshots from a macintosh all of the time, but it didn't cause a problem.

As for the fireworks video... I can say that I learned a great deal about the program, there's no denying that. The pace tended to waver a bit, meaning that he would talk overly slow about one step, then gloss right over the next. This only caused me a problem when I was following along in Fireworks with him. As with the book, all examples are presented on a Macintosh. Had I known, I probably would have purchased the bundle anyway, but I must admit it was more than a little annoying, not because I'm a PC snob or anything, but just hearing two different instructions over and over... Regardless, I struggled with several fireworks books until this video. It got me up and going... now I have to find a source for more detailed information...

The best way to learn Fireworks.......2000-11-13

I was struggling with Fireworks until I got the CD in this training bundle. Garo Green does an excellent job of walking you through the many features of Fireworks. The quick-time movie of the computer screen makes each lesson very easy to follow. I watched the whole thing, and then I go back to each topic I want to learn, watch that topic, and then go and do it.

The most valuable thing about the CD is the comments you would never get from a book. Garo Green tells you which features he uses 95% of the time, which settings he prefers for optimization, etc. This really helped me. I am able to optimize and export images in about two minutes now. Fireworks is a program with more than one way to do a task like optimization, exporting, rollovers, etc. I was always going back and forth between two chapters of a book to try to figure out which was the best way. Thankfully, this CD put an end to that confusion!

The time I have saved and the amount of work I am able to accomplish made the purchase of the CD a very good investment. We will also be using the CD for training the other two people in my office.

Fireworks is a lot more efficient than photoshop when it comes to web graphics and images, and I am delighted to be able to get up to speed in Fireworks thanks to this training CD.

great book.......2000-11-06

this is a greak package in my opinion it goes through the steps of mastering dreamweaver and fireworks very well. apart from giving enough information for the biginer to grasp web design techinques and the basics of how to use the programs there is perfect step by step instructions. I was very confident of using both programs after i was through with the package.The only complaint i have is that it tends to get long winded at times, as it will be for people who have experience with other similar web design tool or html. otherwise it is a fantastic book.

The author does an excellent job of presenting the fundamentals of Fireworks CS3. Since this video learning DVD is broken down into smaller learning lessons it is great for beginners and advanced users. The two lessons that I found to be most helpful were the 9-scale slicing and Adobe Flex prototyping modules. If you are trying to figure out how to build good looking FLEX applications, ... Fireworks CS3 Essential Training will provide you with some significant pieces to this puzzel.

We all have obstacles in our lives, no matter what our lives appear to be from the outside--this author knows what it's like to suffer and overcome devastating circumstances and debilitating depression and learn to find hope in spirituality and faith in God and her Divine Purpose. The author offers the reader many practical, simple tools for living a life of "everyday spirituality"--she teaches that the metaphyscial is nothing to be feared, but rather something each of us encounters in our lives every day without realizing it. The tools she gives for manifesting and meditation and the examples she gives of psychic readings and what to expect from a psychic reading are wonderful. It's obvious the author "walks" her talk and believes wholeheartedly that we all have a Divine Purpose that we can discover and fulfill. She offers easy ways for the reader to discover their own Divine Purpose, without the aid of a psychic, and makes it clear that "being psychic" is a gift we all have, if only we choose to tune into higher energies.

This is one of the most down-to-earth books I have read about metaphysics and New Age beliefs. It could have been titled "Metaphysics 101", or even "Refresher Metaphysics" for the author's grasp of basic, universal concepts that can be applied easily to everyone's daily life.

The author is both a Christian and a "psychic", which I always thought were incompatible, but she points out that we are all intuitive, and that we all have God-given gifts that we can use to get our own Divine Guidance and to manifest harmony and balance and love in our lives.

This book is extremely well-written and flows in a beautiful, uplifting way that will make you feel good when you're done reading it. If you've ever suffered from depression, you will learn about how important early treatment is, and that "sensitive" people are often prone to depression without realizing it. And, while the author has triumphed over depression, she makes it clear that it is a difficult, often-misunderstood mental illness that will not go away all by itself. She does not ask that the reader "talk" or "think" his or her way out of the illness, nor does she blame the victim. In the end, the reality of depression is grim, can be overcome, or at least managed, and is not the fault of the one who suffers from this disease.

In the end, if there were such a thing as "common sense metaphysics", this book would be at the top of the list of "must-reads"!

This book is a very sincere and honest account of every day life with depression. She had everything going for her but couldn't enjoy any of it. She didn't even know she suffered from depression. Like so many of us, she just kept slogging along for years living on determination with little joy. I found the story inspiring and uplifting. I also enjoyed her account of her session with a psychic. Having never been to one, I had no idea what it would be like.
