WONDERFULLY WRITTEN STORY.......2007-03-08
Its a story about a Chinese man named Chin Ah Kin who works in a Labor camp in the 1870s and a mysterious woman wanders into the Chinese labor camp and they befriend each other. She mysteriously disappears befriending people on the way. This is a wonderfully written story about cultural differences and this woman is mistaken for someone else. She doesnt talk but she sings like a canary so shes named Sarah Canary. I really liked this book and it's a very moving, great story. You really feel sorry for the poor woman.
Can't wait for the last page.......2006-05-03
I find this book slow, superficial, and dull. I keep waiting for something to happen, especially since a lot of people really really enjoy this book - am I missing something?
I can't understand Chin's obsession with following Sarah around. I can't understand any of the characters' motivations and the plot doesn't flow, and neither do any descriptions or ideas.
I can't wait to be finished with this book so I can start a new one (I don't like putting down books, especially since I've gotten so far)
Lost Sarah half way through the journey.......2006-01-15
I bought Sarah Canary when it was first published years ago. I started reading it then and stopped early on. Recently I tried to read it again. I went further but once again lost interest, this time half way though the book. I won't try again, I'm afraid, since I'm getting too old to give books more than two fair attempts. I agree with the other reviewers, however, that this book may appeal to someone with a different, quirkier, and more complex sense of humour.
Sarah Canary.......2005-10-26
I thought this was a wonderful book and enjoyed it hugely. I gave 4 stars rather than 5 because I was a little let down over the last few pages ... it seemed a hasty wrap-up to an otherwise creative and compelling tale. Overall-- I laughed out loud, re-read certain passages over and over and will be quoting them to friends and family, felt the tension around Chin as an outcast minority in constant peril, loved B.J. the innocent madman.
I can't agree with some reviewers that Sarah Canary isn't developed as a character-- I think Fowler's portrayal of her as a maddening, incoherent and difficult being is quite consistent up through the end of the book.
Also I liked the historical facts and events described between chapters. I thought these sections, beyond giving the story its crazy context, were written with great (very dry) humor.
I came to her first book last --.......2004-05-06
-- and I may like it the best. Karen Joy Fowler is, by far and away, My Favorite Stylist. It's that demure sense of humor that gets under my skin like a fine-edged scalpel. It's that ability to assemble seemingly random tidbits to form a thematic whole (fans of _Wisconsin Death Trip_ will understand the pleasure in this. Fowler does it best, I think, in her short story, "The Elizabeth Complex"). None of her characters are saints, none villains, but they are all human, all the time, and Fowler portrays them with honesty, empathy, and above all, humor.
(On a purely personal note, I'm a native of Washington state, and I found it great fun running into all the familiar place-names, especially Squak, my hometown -- known, these days, as Issaquah.)

The Ultimate Gude for a Fantastic Fan.......2006-05-01
Well, I've bought three of the Marvel Encyclopedias released to date, the first volume (a general overview), the Spider-Man volume and this Fantastic Four volume.
I have to say, this volume is by far the best. It's similar in format to the Spider-Man one, but the Spider-Man volume didn't quite go into enough detail. That's understandable given the sheer number of Spider-Man comics published (one of the reasons I dread to think what the X-Men volume will be like!). However, the Fastastic Four one seems to get the information per entry/number of entries ratio right. Bar the odd niggle, I pretty much think this volume nails everything of interest to Fantastic Four fans.
Personally I think entries like Malice, The Cosmic Cube and Kang could have been bigger, but these are minor matters. Cramming the entire Fantastic Four canon into a single volume always was an impossible task, and each entry's importance is subjective anyway.
As well as the main body of the encyclopaedia, the book also includes a few essays on the Fantasic Four comics, the TV cartoon series and a look at various toys and action figures released over the years. The recent big screen Fox movie is mentioned, but never becomes the focus for these essays (Unlike the prominence of the films in the Spider-Man volume).
Finally, at the end of the main entries there's an appendix listing all of the Alternative Earths we've glimpsed in various Marvel comics... no just the Fantastic Four (but most are connected in someway to the foursome. The ill-judged Ultimate universe in included in this list. What's more, this appendix even has it's own appendix listing lesser examples. I must say, I found these pages to be the most enjoyable section of the book.
Like all of Marvel's new hardbacks the book has a handsome, unified design which really looks consistent with other volumes or Marvel titles. I have no hesitation in giving this book top marks.
A must-have for any FF or Marvel Sci-Fi fan! On a scale of 1 to 5 this is a 10!.......2005-11-17
By far the most exhaustive of the Marvel Encyclopedia Series. I can not imagine any person, place, thing or noteworthy event that ever even remotely dealt with the Fantastic Four (and to a lesser degree their supporting cast) to have been left out of this volume that flows with seemingly endless information.
-The Encyclopedia: Everything is in here. Everything! Did you know there is a Skrull resort planet where everything is a replica of Prohibition-era America? Worthless yet fun facts such as this abound in the FF Encyclopedia. Not only is the FF covered in excruciating detail, but so are the Sci-Fi and WWII-era remnant corners of Marvel, Silver Surfer, the 1st Human Torch, Thanos, Adam Warlock... the sheer amount of content in this book is astonishing, especially when one considers how the rest of the Marvel Encyclopedia series, Spiderman aside, is a bare-bones quick reference guide- this is the ONLY volume worthy of being called an "encyclopedia".
-Extras: The encyclopedia section is so massive that appendices had to be added, including foot-note characters and a quick guide of alternate realities! Also, the non-comics mediums of the FF are discussed in the beginning of the book (namely cartoons and action figures). The only confusing thing is that the FF Movie was just about to come out a few short weeks before the book was published but it has very little mention... perhaps Marvel did not want to prostitute this book to its marketing department as it did the X-Men Encyclopedia, for example.
If you are a fan of the Fantastic Four not only must you buy this, it's a shame you don't have it already! Also, if you are one of the handful of people who love the Silver Surfer and the small domain of Marvel science fiction the saints who put this together snuck in a good bit of stuff to appease you. Step on anyone who gets the way of you purchasing this book!
Everything you wanted to know about the Fantstic Four & more.......2004-12-28
The Fantastic Four Encyclopdia has a detailed synopsis of nearly every character the fantastic four has encounter as a group or sepretally. It has chararcters from the 60s all the way to new characters just recently created. It also has characters from the Human Torch's strange tales in the 60s and THe Thing's Marvel-Two-in-One. Yes this has it all and is a must bye for any Fantastic Four fan.

A good book to know the writer a little bit more.......2006-02-20
I bought this book for my husband who is a #1 BENITEZ FAN... He owns almost the entire collection of this author, and he read it in only one afternoon. He told me that he was unable to leave it behind... Now he is waiting for "Caballo de Troya 8" and "Caballo de Troya 9", because he read on Benitez' web site that they were already done.

Book Description
The nature and task of ethics has been the subject of much controversy and argument in recent decades. There are those who argue that the resources needed for ethical understanding arise solely within the specific history of their traditions, whether religious or secular. Yet there are also thinkers who argue that ethics needs fundamental re-thinking in face of the challenges raised by the modern, globalized world. Ethical understanding on this account draws on multiple resources in imaginative and comparative ways in order to address shared human problems. William Schweiker has emerged as the leading theological voice from this side of the debate.Theological Ethics And Global Dynamics: In The Time Of Many Worlds is a wide-ranging, comprehensive, and provocative statement of the nature of theological ethics in global times. It argues that we need to reframe the arena in which moral questions are asked and answered. The volume draws on a wealth of materials ranging from biblical texts and classical myths, to literary works, and even contemporary film. More positive in tone than the often skeptical outlook of postmodernity, the book engages a range of positions, exploring issues such as cultural and moral relativism, dimensions of globalization, pressing moral problems like consumption and violence, and religious pluralism. While it speaks to the complexity of life, where ethical decisions are difficult and far from clear-cut, it presents an ethical perspective which is both humane and deep religious. The style of the book is clear and engaging, designed to be used by senior undergraduate and graduate students studying contemporary ethics.

BUD HASTINS AVON COLLECTORS BOOK.......2006-03-09
I AM VERY PLEASED WITH THE BOOK I PURCHASED FROM AMAZON.COM THIS BOOK DID GIVE ME ALL THE INFORMATION I WAS LOOKING FOR. AND DOING BUSINESS WITH AMAZON.COM WAS VERY GOOD, AND THE PRICES AND SHIPPING WERE VERY SATISFACTORY.
The Seventeenth Edition.......2004-01-06
As a whole it is fantastic. But, by not listing the men's by name, such as "Leather"; it caused me a lot of time and trouble trying to find it.

Very Disappointed!!.......2003-03-01
I bought this book for several different reasons but mainly for Avon beer steins...most of which my husband has...and didn't get enough information from this book to really be able to price even one out of all that he has...My husband and I both agree that this book is short on information, details, and inventory. Really wish that I had not bought the book.
very disappointing.......2002-04-10
I just received this book and was very disappointed.I have an older avon book with color pages and handy guide. This book had unclear, black and white pictures.Hard to use.I definately would not recommend this book for a collector.
Bid Hastin Avon Collectors Encyclopedia.......2001-09-09
I was under the impression that the book had more of a variety of "collectibles" than shown. I have several items from the 60's to the late 80's that I could not find. The collectible I was most interested in finding was a set of 4 Birds from 1986. All 4 are stamped except one--the owl--does not have the year on the base.
Bud Hastin's 16th Ed Avon Collector's Encyclopedia.......2001-07-12
This book proved very helpful to me, but, there were some Avon items I have that I believe should have been in the book (alongside similar items), but, were not. I would suggest people buy this book if they have Avon items, but, remember that the book is not inclusive.
Good Book, But Where's The Color?.......2001-04-12
This is a great book for collectors of AVON and Cape Cod Products. Recently used it to price a few items for sell on eBay.com. Only thing that would make the book better is if it where to contain color photos, rther than the black and white ones.

Charles Tuthill: An American Artisan-Entrepreneur.......2001-12-31
An enthralling chronical of the career of a remarkable man, Charles Tuthill, founder of Tuthill Cut Glass of Middletown, New York, and his family. Beginning as an apprentice at T. G. Hawkes & Company in 1887, Tuthill went on to become both a master glass cutter and a master engraver. He rose to foreman at Hawkes by the time he was 24 years old, resigning in 1895 to set up his own glass-cutting shop in his father's carraige house in Corning. From there he moved to Middletown where he was joined in the business by his sister-in-law, who served as general manager, and his brother. Well known for its original designs combining engraved fruits and flowers with geometric cutting, the Company prospered and, in 1915, was awarded a gold medal for its display at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco.
Written in the you-are-there style of the "new journalism," the book is a lively read. Drawing heavily on interviews with Tuthill family members, it fills a large gap in our knowledge of the cut glass industry. Cut glass collectors will recognize the names of the players in this unique American success story and get to know them better through the many anecdotes offered by author Maurice Crofford. The book should appeal also to those interested in American business history, in general, and the unique period around the turn of the 20th century when brilliant cut glass decorated the tables of the rich and famous. It would make an excellent reading assignment for upstate New York high school students.

Small enough to carry with you ...........2000-10-23
The "Little Style" books fit easily into a large pocket or a purse and can be taken with you to read while waiting at the dentists' office or on the bus. The downside of this is that the photos are not really big enough to fully appreciate the details of the furniture and fixtures shown, but the author wisely doesn't try to show very large spaces. And the photos and small paragraphs of text are wonderful (another "sigh and salivate" book) - there are inside and outside photographs from beach-houses in Sardinia to rural villas in Umbria (? Tuscany ?) to snowy mountain cabins in the Tyrol - and all with that (deceptively simple) Italian country style that often uses tile, stone, straw, and a few heavy pieces of wooden furniture that look to have been in the family since the days of Lorenzo the Magnificent. It very clearly shows a specific style (with adaptations for climate and materials), and is as eloquent about what it LEAVES OUT as what it includes. I found myself carrying the little book with me to go buy upholstery material or furniture or kitchen equipment; I began to carry it with me like a nun carries a Missal, to remind me of the style I admire and to avoid making those Expensive Design Mistakes we have all been prone to in moments of indecision. It's NOT a coffee-table book, but it IS a beautiful little book, and a bargain at the price.

Far beyond any sect, religious system or crystallized organization, the true “seeker” will find in this book the possibility to establish contact with a “living” and essential teaching.

Uninspiring, badly written account of a neo-Sufi order.......2004-12-21
When I ordered Sgolastra's book, I was expecting something similiar to Castaneda's books- a semi-fictional account of a contemporary shaman or magician of some type. While "The Way: On the Way With a Contemporary Master" fits that bill, it is considerably lacking in many ways.
First off, the writing and editing are horrible and uninspiring, and Sgolastra is a downright uninteresting character- one who also manages to make his master, Alfredo, just as dull. He gives an account of discovering Gurdjieff's books, being hooked up with Alfredo through a millitary contact, and then attending Alfredo's classes. While there are frequently mentions of "exercises", little detail is given, and as time goes by, the Gurdjieff-esq Alfredo starts making odder and odder proclamations (such as the approach of a planet filled with alien beings that will be trading entities with Earth). Throughout, other paths and orthodox faiths are belittled, and Alfredo is always ambiguous about the origins of his teaching (which are similiar to the "Fourth Way" of Gurdjieff and Ouspensky). Much of the book reads like recruitment propaganda for the path, which is alternately referred to as "Alfredo's Work" or "The Way".
Unless you have a strong interest in neo-Gurdjieffian groups, skip this one.
the definitive account of the 'New Phase'.......2004-03-05
Anyone who has ever searched for an authentic spiritual path will identify with Juan Sgolastra's journey. A young man at odds with the world is convinced that there must be more to life than the conventional answers that are offered to him. But immersing himself in esoteric literature seems only to deepen his despair and alienation. Then, by a remarkable series of coincidences, the military service he has done his best to avoid leads to a rare opportunity to meet a genuine teaching master. Even so, it's an opportunity he nearly passes up. And one that will be followed through only years later, on the other side of the world.
'The Way' is a remarkable account of the interaction between master and disciple, set against the backdrop of the contemporary world. Unlike other mystical odysseys, however, it provides a fascinating insight into the subtlety of the process. There are no exotic locations, dramatic performances or terrifying ordeals in 'The Way' - only the story of life in a small Italian provincial town, of hints and indications that could easily be missed, of hard work to overcome a lifetime's conditioning and negativity. Yet there is also a picture of a flourishing school, operating almost invisibly in a world fixated by the exciting and the spurious, offering contact with a kind of teaching usually assumed only to exist in remote, inaccessible places - or in other times. And an impression of an extraordinary master, inheritor of an ancient tradition, whose work is absolutely of the time, the place and the people with whom he works.
'The Way' offers hope - and opportunity - to all of us who, like Juan Sgolastra, have searched for a true path. And who have failed to find it in the numerous attractive, but ultimately fruitless, offerings in the 'spiritual' marketplace. Its message will be instantly recognizable to anyone who is familiar with, for instance, the contemporary presentation of Sufi ideas - and who has been eagerly awaiting a 'new phase' of teaching.
a key book.......2004-02-24
The subject matter of The Way, one person's encounter with a contemporary "Master", links it in some ways to the casteneda series and other student-teacher works. The context, that humanity's evolution is linked to an overall plan for the universe and that we are now at a critical time in our evolution, suggests that all is not what it appears to be vis a vis who we are and what we are doing on this planet.
What i liked about this book is that it presents its subject matter in a very prosaic manner, refusing to get carried away or lost in mysticsm or other fantasy. For example, we are told that humanity's evolution (cerebral rather than physical) is directly influenced by radiation from the sun, in the sense that the solar winds, those discharges of elementary particles and electro-magnetic radiation, can effect the way you think and percieve the world around you. This ties in with the latest thinking about conciousness and electromagnetic fields.
In addition it presents the "master" or teacher of mysteries as a very normal human being alive and living in a western context, and that The way should be lived as such, by us here and now, no need to go off to exotic places and sit at the feet of bearded men in robes, and it makes sense that this is so, the teaching is presented in a way which is in harmony with its environment.
The book is definately adressing people living right now, not some abstract human being, and the information given towards the end about the years to come and what might or might not happen lends it an urgency far removed from the vague enterprises of finding "oneself" or "the truth". We are, according to many traditions, living at some kind of critical juncture for humanity, and for those who might want to know what that means or what to do about it, this book certainly offers food for thought.
