Book Description

Definitely not one of Jaime Bayly's bests........2003-06-06
This is an interesting book by Jaime Bayly in the sense that it's just a serious of confessions in the form of letters that were written to various people who were a part of his life at one point of time and in the letters he expresses repent, sorrow, sentimental feelings etc. The book comes across as one in which Jaime Bayly once again reveals the intimacies and at this point complexities of his life. However, what are consistent in this book and others of his that I have read are his language skills and his unique way of expressing himself, which I think, is his strongest attribute. In a nutshell, this is a book with no real plot and the letters written to various friends he once had do not necessarily relate to each other. If you like Jaime Bayly it may be a worthwhile read otherwise you may want to read his other more credible works such as: Yo amo a mi mami and No se lo digas a nadie.

Waiting for the next one.......2007-09-06
I too, read this series when I was younger and although 15+ years have passed, they remain my favorite series of books. I have been eagerly awaiting the re-release of these books and will purchase them again, as an adult, for a quick, fun read.
I definitely recommend them for someone who's introducing their teenager to reading. I hope they get sucked into the story as much as I did.
Beloved fantasy stories.......2007-01-13
I first read these books as a 7-year-old second grader. I still have the entire series lying around somewhere. Reading them as a child, I was absolutely enchanted. I re-read them as an adult, and they are still captivating.
These stories are absolutely excellent for young readers, particularly young girls, who want a great role model. Sheila is courageous, strong, and innovative; I love her creative mind. (Wait until you see how she fends off the first perceived enemies in the "other world"!)
Whether you're a parent looking for something to read to/with a child, or an adult fantasy lover, you will enjoy these tales. You can probably find the original six novels for sale used, too. (I was always hoping they would come out with more :)
Wonderful Book.......2006-08-10
I absolutely love these books. I only found the firt two at a clearence book store in the mall, and I truly fell in love with the books. Granted, they are more for young preteens than teenagers, but those of you who love a great fantasy story, this is a series for you. They should really put these books back into print, it would really be worth it if they would. So many people would love them, and I really hope publishers make them available again soon. I only have the first three, but have been going through pains to get the rest, seeing as how they are all so expensive these days. Keep looking though, it would really be worth your while if you could bye the books.
About Time!.......2006-06-04
It's about time that they got around to print Secret of the Unicorn queen again. I love these books. They are the perfect adventure fantasy books for young adults. A little romance, some fighting and good triumphs over evil like any good tale. While they were printed over 10 years ago, they have never gone out of fad. Now all we have to do is wait till the other books come out in print too.
An underrated series.......2005-09-30
I read the 'Secret of the Unicorn Queen' many years ago when they were first released, I adored them then and I'm glad to see that things that I loved then are still present now.
The series follows a young teenage girl name Sheila who has a pretty normal life, the only thing out of the ordinary is her relationship with Dr. Rite an eccentric scientist.
When a accident happens involving his affectionate cat and a untested invention Sheila finds herself in the world of Arren, where unicorns are real, magic exists. She meets a group of women determined to free the land from a tyrant. Sheila joins them and can't help but get caught up in the fight.
While the book doesn't break any barriers and doesn't bring anything new to the genre it's still a solidly written story with likable characters, and engaging plot and even a few laughs.
Though intended for younger readers I think this series has appeal for older ones as well and not just as nostalgia.

Super Reader.......2007-08-26
The Rat gets busted robbing a mint, and gets put on trial for his life. His only problem is that the trail comes after the execution.
However, the League has a job for him, and used the Life Model Decoy gambit to get him out of it, and promptly poisons him.
He has to track down an alien artifact on a prison planet. So, as a cover for being a prisoner type, he forms a rock band, the Stainless Steel Rats, natch.
An extensive send-up of Iron whassisname in the woods guy in the latter part of the book, as well.
Amusing as usual.
Outrageous Reviews.......2001-01-07
The Stainless Steel Rat is not to be mocked. This man knows where you live... This book is, just like the other books excellent. I have read all of the SSR books, in and out of order and this one holds up just as well as the others. Dont just buy this one, buy them all. Bolivar
Rat Fans REJOICE!.......2000-06-27
Whaddaya mean this is the worst of the bunch? Now, I'm a serious rat fan; I've read almost all the SSR books, and this one fits in very nicely! It's got a fairly good plot, altheough characters don't really need to pop out of nowhere like that.
A sequel to a sequel to a prequel:.......2000-04-27
First there was "The Stainless Steel Rat", our introduction to Slippery Jim DiGriz, aka the Stainless Steel Rat, a high-tech, futuristic conman and thief who is caught, after a long and successful career, by the galactic special corps, and recruited to join them because it takes a thief to catch a thief. Then followed four more books in chronoligical order, "The Stainless Steel Rat's Revenge", "The Stainless Steel Rat Saves The World", "The Stainless Steel Rat Wants You", and "The Stainless Steel Rat For President". Then, apparently growing bored with the direction his stories were taking, Harrison retreated to the beginning, and wrote the prequel, "A Stainless Steel Rat Is Born". Then he followed that with "A Stainless Steel Rat Gets Drafted", a story following immediately on the heels of the prequel. This story follows that one chronologically.
There are dangers to writing prequels, and this book fails to avoid them entirely. In a prequel, it is necessary to make it plausible that a character's experiences could lead to him being the person he is at the beginning of the book the prequel precedes; this is reasonably well accomplished in this book, if not perfectly well. But it is also necessary, in a prequel, that the story be interesting without having anything happen so major and potentially relevent to events in later stories that it seems impossible that the character never referred back to those experiences in chronologically later, but previously written, stories. Here, this book fails miserably; given that DiGriz has experiences in chronologically later books with both time travel and visitors from his time's far future, both of which also come into play in this book, it seems incredible that we've never "heard" him mention the experiences in this book before.
But perhaps this is all too stringent a set of complaints to make about a book that, like the rest of the series, is never intended to be taken seriously; like a James Bond story, or an action movie, the "Stainless Steel Rat" stories are all meant as merely fun romps, plot-driven and action-intensive, without worrying about whether those plots will stand close scrutiny for internal consistency.
So let's review it on its own terms: yes, it's a fun romp, with plenty of action. As usual in these books, the dialogue is rather stilted and artificial, the characters are two-dimensional, and if it enhances the potential for action and drama in the plot, Harrison doesn't let a little thing like consistency of character stand in his way. (DiGriz is supposed to be brilliant, but makes enough stupid mistakes to keep himself in constant danger, so that the pace of the action can stay high.)
This book, like the rest of the books in the series, is fun brain candy, but don't expect careful plotting or a serious story, and don't examine things too carefully for plausibility or internal consistency; it won't stand up to even passing examination.
Snooze!.......1999-04-29
A definate disappointment from an otherwise excellent author and tremendously entertaining series. I've read all the SSR books, and was very excited when this one came out. However, the story was rather flat and much of the "life" has slipped out of Slippery Jim. Many parts were entirely too predictable, while others were just plain not believable. I really got the impression that Harrison decided to do this book just for a bit of added revenue, as it seemed his heart really wasn't in it. Overall, I'd say you're better off skipping this particular entry in the tale of Slippery Jim and keep your fond memories of him intact.

Book Description
From the bestselling author of Until Today! and
One Day My Soul Just Opened Up comes a unique invitation
to prayer -- and her most deeply personal book yet.
Over the years, bestselling author Iyanla Vanzant has received many letters from readers who want to know how to pray. Some are afraid they are praying wrong. Some want a formula. Some think their prayers are unworthy. Here, Iyanla shares the realizations that changed her experience with prayer once and for all: Every thought, every word, every action is a prayer; focus on God's presence in everything -- and everyone -- and prayer becomes as natural as breathing.
The prayers in Everyday I Pray culled from Iyanla's own prayer journal, address a variety of topics and situations. It is Iyanla's hope that they will spark a light in the hearts of readers, and that others will come to know the peace of God's grace. With this intimate collection, she invites readers everywhere to join her in making the thoughts, words, and deeds of everyday life more reverent, honorable, and loving.

Wonderful!.......2007-05-01
Prayers for all occasions, a book you will always return to. You will enjoy tremendously
Asolutely Awesome.......2007-03-09
I have incorporated the prayers in this book my everday spiritual well-being. My fiance' and I read a prayer from this book, and a daily devotional from another book, and I have never felt this close with him before. We take time to pray together and relfect on the devotional for the day every night before we go to bed. God has definitely sent his message through this sister because they are on point almost every day. Thoughts expressed in this reading can apply to almost every area in my life. I love this book!
Amazing Guidance.......2005-11-30
This book is a wonderful guide for prayer, reflection and meditation. There is a prayer for every occasion.
Wonderful book for young professionals .......2005-08-01
This book is a wonderful collection of prayers for all occasions, when you're feeling anxious, thankful, overwhelmed or confused. You can read it each day and say a prayer according to your life that day. Its a way to speak with God everyday and not necessarily complain or ask Him for something, but rather just talk with Him.
Its small and light and you can take it anywhere you go.
I bought this book because I wanted to repair my relationship with God. I went to Catholic School for 18 years and was very much at odds with what I was taught. But I knew that even if I didn't belive like a Catholic, I believed. And I wanted to be able to talk to God in a beautiful way. This book certainly helped me do that.
Buy it, you won't regret it.
Good and Good For You!.......2004-04-17
Every Day I Pray is a wonderful collection of prayers for many situations we all find ourselves in. I have been on a dedicated search to find a way to incorporate prayer into every aspect of my life, and am so thankful I found Iyanla Vanzant's books. Thank you Iyanla for putting into words that EVERYTHING we do/say/think is noticed by God and we should give it all to Him/Her in thanks. I especially like that Iyanla writes God as He/She, Him/Her, as I believe God to be a duality of both the male and female. God Bless and I hope you find what you need in this lovely book.

Book Description
The first comprehensive book on Mexican wines published in English. Dimitri Tchelistcheff was technical director at Bodegas Santo Tomas, oldest winery in Baja. A historical Prologue is provided by Dr. Enrique Ferro. Each winery is described in an "Essentials" section listing location, contacts, size, production and winemaker. History, winemaker notes and vineyard and fermentation techniques are included along with tasting notes and suggested food matches. Chapters on Wine Terms, Grapes of Baja, Wine Festivals and Events assist the visitor, as well as sections on where to eat, rest and read more about this exciting region; plus how to get there and what to see in the wine producing valleys. Ideal for any wine enthusiast or armchair traveler.
Customer Reviews:
An examination of Mexican wines.......2006-05-26
Here's another wine region which receives little attention in the typical wine books: an examination of Mexican wines - the first published in English. From a survey of the oldest winery in Baja California to newer ones springing up today, each winery receives a description review of products and size, and plenty of historical background. Tasting notes, reviews of Baja grapes and wine events, and supplemental travel details on accommodations and restaurants for those intending a visit make WINES OF BAJA CALIFORNIA: TOURING AND TASTING MEXICO'S UNDISCOVERED TREASURES a winner.

Wines of Baja California.......2003-11-02
The author is remarkably humble to our greatly improving vineyards while accurate to a pinpoint. So great a book about Baja North, Mexican wines (guadalupe Valley where I live) that I have given 16 copies, to date, to colleagues including one who lives in France and another in Germany.
Roberto Chantlos: Rosarito, Baja CA, Mexico.
Wines of Baja Made Easy.......2003-09-30
This new book by Ralph Amey fills a real need for a description of the many fabulous wines of Baja, plus it provides an interesting history, and lots of discussion of locations and useful maps and guides. Everybody who likes to think of himself or herself as a wine connoisseur should have a copy of this book.
Baja Vino.......2003-09-30
It may come as a surprise to many that Mexico produces fine wines. This is especially true on the northern Baja where the climate is ideal. Ralph Amey, an Angeleno who lives there part time, holds many awards from and positions in winemaking circles, evaluates many different vintners and their wines in the area near Ensenada, especially the Valle de Guadalupe and nearby valleys. The book opens with a history of winemaking in Mexico, then provides a detailed map of how to find the ones in the Northern Baja. The book is lavishly illustrated with black-and-white photos.
There are two different sorts of wineries in the area, Urban and Valley. Among the Urban are Bodegas de Santo Tomas and Cavas Valmar, both in Ensenada. The valley wineries are Casa Pedro Domecq, L. A. Cetto, Monte Xanic, Chateau Camou, Mogor-Badan, Vinos Bibayoff, Vina de Liceaga, Casa de Piedra, Adobe Guadalupe Vineyard, and Vinisterra S.A. de C.V. For each, Amey provides directions for getting there, telephone numbers in case you get lost or have been imbibing the wine rather than tasting it, fax and email addresses, their web pages, founding dates, owners, vintners, details on tour times, as well as their production capacities, and the acreage of their vineyards. He also lists the red and white wines produced at each, plus how each winery came into being.
In the event you're a novice and don't know Merlot from Mogen David, a later passage describes the history of each wine and its distinctive taste. The only criticism I would have of the volume is its inability to be held open to the page you want at the winery you're at. A spiral-bound book would have served both the amateur and the connoisseur much better.
There is no question that Ralph Amey knows wines, especially Mexican wines. He is a founding member of the Southern California Society of Wine Educators. This is an invaluable book. Salud!
A Pleasure to Read.......2003-09-25
As you begin this book you know immediately that Ralph Amey enjoys wines and is an expert on the subject. Here he has set out to tell us about "Wines of Baja California," as his title states but it isn't only the wines that he enjoys and writes about. He obviously loves Baja, and so we hear a lot also about "touring and tasting Mexico's undiscovered treasures,"including practical tips for visitors to the area.
The book is a gracefully-written, detailed consideration of the history of winemaking in Mexico, how to get to the valleys where winemaking takes place, the history and ownership of the wineries, as well as the vintages and grapes. Finally there is a discussion of wine festivals and fiestas, places to stay and to eat, sources of more information, and a helpful glossary of wine-related terms.
What makes this book unique is not just Ralph Amey's experience as a connoisseur and judge of wines, but his habits of thought as a research chemist and teacher; he is interested in history and geography and weather and people and processes as they relate to his subject, and his experience as a researcher and teacher help him to know the value of details and how to explain in an interesting way. An especially helpful touch is his suggesting, again and again, what foods go well with what wines, for example: "Unico Gran Reserva. . .Try with osso buco or mushrooms in puff pastry."
There's a refreshing informal tone to the writing and to the beautiful design of the pages, enhanced by vintage photographs, maps, and circular pre-columbian Mexican motifs. Very inviting.
Book Description
The Ultimate Coffee-table Book on the World's Most Famous Souvenir: the Hawaiian Shirt
The Aloha Shirt: Spirit of the Islands is the most colorful and complete book published on the most enduring souvenir ever invented: the Hawaiian shirt.
First developed in the early `30s as a "tourist attraction," Aloha shirts have their roots in the graphic, comfortable clothing that South Seas islanders have been wearing for hundreds of years.
Around 1935, a small-but-daring group of clothing manufacturers in Honolulu hit on the same good idea simultaneously: to make wildly colorful, "air-conditioned" short-sleeved shirts for tourists that would give them an immediate sense of relaxation, and going "Hawaiian." The shirts were also, as one clever Waikiki marketer observed, "Postcards you can wear."
So it has been for more than sixty years, with countless Hawaiian- and Japanese-print shirts designed and sold for the pleasure of millions of people.
The Aloha Shirt traces the splashy history of Hawaiian shirts from their beginnings right after the Great Depression through their popularity with World War II American servicem SecC and into the "Golden Era" of Hawaiian tourism and garment manufacturingfrom 1935 to 1955.
As the book points out, Aloha shirts have been the favorite leisure wear of everyone from twenty-something surfers to presidents such as Harry Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower. Elvis Presley chose Aloha shirts as the main costume for his movie, Blue Hawaii.
Today, Aloha shirts are more popular than ever. From California to Tokyo, hundreds of manufacturers are turning out modern-day shirts costing from $15 to more than $100. It's a half-billion-dollar-a-year industry. And shirt collectors at New York auction houses and on eBay on it's Web site now pay thousands of dollars for a single rayon "silkie" that cost less than a dollar in 1935.
Lavishly illustrated with hundreds of full color, never-before-published shirt images, vintage black-and-white photographs, and priceless examples of period "Hawaiiana," the book features separate chapters on the innovative artists, risk-taking manufacturers, and silky fabrics behind the success of the world's most famous shirt.
The Aloha Shirt is both a dazzling, fun-to-browse art book, and a fascinating chronicle of the world's love affair with Hawaii.
Customer Reviews:
Great book, but where's the index? .......2005-12-06
I loved this book, it is helpful to my collecting and my selling. It has wonderful pictures, and I love the section on '60's makers and just the way it is arranged in general is helpful and makes for fascinating reading. The only thing I would like to see with this book is a name index; this would make it so much more helpful as a reference. I do highly recommend it though, as a reference or just as a coffee table book.
The Book that Changed my Life........2005-03-13
Wow, what a book!! Having been previously lightly infected by the `Aloha Shirt' bug, after having read this beautiful book, I became incurably and terminally struck down. Profusely illustrated from the collections of many well-known and extremely lucky collectors, this book has become my bedside bible. The research is also first-class, following the development of the Aloha shirt from a fun thing, to a full-blown industry. I now live and breath THE shirt. Buy this book and like me, change your life.
If everyone wore aloha shirts, there'd be no war..........2001-03-06
If Hawaii or the aloha shirt has ever gladdened your heart, you'll want to own THE ALOHA SHIRT. Dale Hope conveys the TRUE SPIRIT (colorful, soft, peaceful, flowing) of the Hawaiian Islands by presenting both the fascinating history of the aloha shirt and 500 or so beautiful illustrations. These illustrations are so varied and exquisite that you'll get high just by perusing them. They also help you see how the aloha shirt can be an art form in and of itself. Hopefully, this book will inspire people to wear their aloha shirts more often -- not just when they visit Hawaii -- and to buy the new ones that are being created by the best artist designers.
Profusely and beautiful illustrated.......2001-02-13
Dale Hope grew up in the Hawaiian garment industry, taking over his father's clothing business at the age of 26. As the art director of Kahala Sportswear, Hope oversees the creation and manufacturing of 150 new Aloha shirt designs annual. In The Aloha Shirt: Spirit Of The Islands, Hope collaborates with writer Gregory Tozian to offer a magnificent, coffee-table artbook dedicated to the history of the unique and famous Hawaiian shirt style. This impressive treatise covers the history of Hawaiian clothing, the evolution of the tailor shop into the modern clothing factories, the designers, textiles, printmakers, and retailers that made the Hawaiian "aloha shirt" famous around the world. There are chapters focusing on Duke Kahanamoku, celebrities, shirt makers of the 60s, labels and buttons, and aloha shirt collectors. Profusely and beautiful illustrated, the text is informative, at times fascinating, and highly recommended for students of American clothing history and fads in general, and Hawaii's contributions to the garment industry and American popular culture in particular.
The Aloha Shirt: Spirit of the Islands.......2000-11-30
The Aloha Shirt: Spirit of the Islands is unique, as a historical and artistic book documenting the Aloha shirt, from its historic beginnings as a cottage industry, to the multi-billion dollar industry it is today. This definitive text has been extensively researched, with textile artists, designers, garment manufacturers and their families and friends all contributing to the consistency of the history as researched by Dale Hope. An educational and artistic book bringing over 500 aloha shirts with their Hawaiian inspired origins paralleled with the history and times of Hawaii. For those who have memories of Hawaii, and for those who share their memories to others, this elegant coffee table book is a "must have" for all!

Pop culture meets the Aloha shirt.......2007-04-23
If you were ever even slightly curious about Aloha shirts then this is the book for you! Well illustrated and written it makes a fun read. The Art of the Aloha Shirt includes not just examples of many of the patterns commonly seen in these shirts but also photos of the shirts as worn in the 1930s, 1940s and beyond. Great pics of some of the more common labels and some of the advertising associated with these shirts.
There are bigger books on this subject but this is a good start for anyone interested in this subject.
Aloha shirts rule.......2006-03-29
Okay, I have a weakness for Hawaiian shirts. This is a great book about the history and making of this staple of American men's wear. The aloha shirt make cycle in and out of current style but never completely out of style. If you own more than five then perhaps you should invest in this book. If you own more than twenty then you most likely have this book. This will give you a clear understanding of what to look for in garage sales and thrift stores but please do not get on the collecting kick. These shirts are meant to be worn.
Book Description
Over 300 beautiful print shirts, dresses, and bathing suits-acquired on vacation in the tropics-brought home to preserve the memory, cherished, and shown here to recall and enjoy. Lovely florals, maps, famous scenes, something of the lush vacation lifestyle. The book is organized by tropical locations: the South Pacific, Hawaii, California, Florida, Bermuda, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, the West Indies...and the designs are inspired by the heat, light, and relaxation of these popular destinations. Today's graphics designers will find this a source of great ideas; collectors will want them all. Shown also are 163 different clothing labels to help identify the retail and design origins.

Customer Reviews:
It's "ukulele" NOT "ukelele".......2004-02-07
I agree with the other reviews so I won't duplicate that. The author really should've gotten his facts -- and spelling -- right before publishing. He had a great opportunity to put out a good and wanted product, but he blew it. I was thinking maybe it's better than nothing, but no, I'd rather have nothing. Thank goodness there are more things available now.
Pretty pictures; not terribly informative.......2002-02-19
I've been told Steele's take on history is somewhat spotty; I'm not an expert so I can't confirm or deny that. To be honest, I've never even read the text. But the photos are numerous and great; there are over 125 full shirts in full color, many of them full-page as well. That makes the book perfect as an painting resource, which is what I use it for. If you're a fabric designer, costumer or artist, or just dreaming of the islands in their jet-set days of Lana Turner and Elvis Presley, this book is a good resource.
Great pictures, bad historically.......1999-12-15
Apparently the author was a collector on the US mainland since he apparently did not do much historical research in Hawaii. The dates are usually off about ten years. Also from his book you'd think all Hawaii produced were rayon shirts when cottons, in Asian prints, have been most common!
Historically, this is terribly inaccurate.......1999-02-17
Unfortunately, many of the dates presented in this book are wrong, and this book has perpetuated several myths and inaccuracies with regard to the history and evolution of the Aloha shirt. I am a historian who does research on Hawaii, and am curator of the world's largest collection of Hawaiian apparel. It is sad to say that this book and others written by collectors have proven to be a real problem because whatever research Mr. Steele did, was not only incomplete but flawed. As the first book published on the topic of Hawaiian clothing, this book is often cited and the inaccuracies are accepted as correct when they are not.
Good color pictures, some inaccuracies in the text........1997-12-31
While the photos of the classic "silkies"
are fine, and most of the text is correct,
there are some historical inaccuracies.

Customer Reviews:
One of the Best Books on This Topic.......2006-09-24
I've been reading books of a spiritual &/or paranormal nature for about 5 years now, and I have to say that "Beyond Boundaries: The Adventures of a Seer" is one of the best I've read to date! It includes many great stories from the author's years as a "seer", information about how she conducts readings (i.e., what to expect, what & where she sees, and how she interprets this info.) as well as discussions around a large number of spiritual concepts/thoughts/ideas.
As you read this book, you can actually feel the compassion of Louise Hauk! It's easy to see that she truly wants to spread the word to help others to get the most out of their lives. I also love the way she uses various thought-provoking analogies to help make complex spiritual/"paranormal" concepts easier to understand & use - they're quite creative!
Overall, I found this book to be an enjoyable, insightful read. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in spirituality - it has a LOT to offer!
I highly recommend this book.......2001-03-22
An inspiring read by a sensitive and personable seer. Includes personal stories that make this subject accessible. Topics include dealing with the death of a loved one, precognition, time, and karmic relationships; all presented via fascinating and real stories. Offers comfort, hope and clarity to the deeper meaning of life.
HEART-LINKS.......2000-04-27
This book gives me hope and comfort. After losing a loved one I have been searching desperately and exploring my spirituality. Heart-Links is filled with stories of wonderful connections to loved ones. Louise's compassion and caring comes through as so much of what she does. Her sharing of her incredible gifts shows me how I can also become a multi-sensory intuitive being. This book has brought me some peace in my heart. The exercises will give me tools to guide me. I feel that people of many different beliefs and religions can benefit from the lessons and stories. I encourage everyone searching to read this wonderful book!
Inspiring and heartwarming spiritual journey.......2000-04-24
This book captivated me. Ms. Hauck tells of true life challenges, from a perspective of love and insight, and offers tools for dealing with obstacles in our lives. Her ability to make sense out of others' seemingly overwhelming problems is inspiring and uplifting, offering us all a glimpse at the possibilty of enlightenment and understanding of what life and death are all about. I've read it several times and have given copies of it to many people.
