Book Description
1921. This is the second book in The Maida Westabrook series, which features Maida Westabrook, the orphaned daughter of Jerome Buffalo Westabrook, Wall Street tycoon. Although Maida has had everything that money can buy and the devotion of her father, she suffers from poor health. After an operation, on a chance visit to Charlestown they visit a little neighborhood shop, and Maida is enchanted and wishes that she, too, could keep a shop just like this one. Buffalo Westabrook, delighted to see Maida take an interest in something, buys the shop and arranges for Maida to live above the shop with elderly Irish housekeeper, Granny Flynn. The only two conditions are that she must make the shop pay, and she must not reveal her true identity. There is a fairy tale charm about Maida, the poor little rich girl, who is restored to health and who finds happiness living in an ordinary neighborhood among ordinary children, tending her little shop. In Maida's Little House all of her friends spend a happy summer in her perfect little house that has everything a child could wish for. X-Men Fans will not be dissapointed!.......2005-09-08
Serious Fans Beware.......2003-09-01
Also, he fails to account for the absence of two of the major X-groups, Excalibur and X-Force, througout the novels. Further, he fails to account for the absence of the Avengers, Fantastic Four and Spider-Man, all who have strong ties to Manhattan, the scene for the majority of the story. Personally, I think the story was poorly conceived, though the idea had merit.
Another issue I have with the novels is characterization - Golden not only has written out Psylocke and Jubilee without explanation, he has also changed much of the idea behind the characterization developed by Marvel for the characters he does include. While remaining true to Cain Marko and Charles Xavier (to an extent), he completely ignores the characterizations developed for Storm, Jean, Rogue, Iceman, Archangel and several of the other characters that he treats dismissively.
While most of the reviewers for this series have said they were thoroughly pleased with it, I was immensely disappointed. Though fanfic can ignore continuity, the author generally makes a introductory courtesy note of the omission to the readers. This prevents disappointment with the story on a whole.
If you are looking for a good X-Men fanfic, there are several available on websites free of charge that are neither so long, nor so tedious as this. I am of the opinion that Mr. Golden needs to re-evaluate his next attempt to characterize the X-Men. And if Marvel is responsible for the editing on this series, they need to hire someone who can read for the *numerous* errors included in the manuscript.

Beginning of the Trilogy.......2002-03-28
Definitely one of the best X-Men novels.......2001-07-01
I'm a longtime fan of the X-Men. I discovered the comic book over 10 years ago and have been following it or one of its cousin books ever since. In that time, I've also managed to compile a sizeable back-issue collection, meaning I have most of the X-Men comics from 1975 and on.
That leaves me with huge expectations for every X-Men issue, TV series, movie, and novel that comes out. Needless to say, I've been disappointed by many of them. Sometimes, my only wish is that a new X-Men related product merely be decent, if not great.
Siege, the first part of the Mutant Empire trilogy by Christopher Golden, meets and exceeds every single one of my expectations.
One thing I love about this series, and about each individual novel in it, is the pacing. With about 350 pages per novel, Golden has a great deal of room to work with, and he puts that to great use. He maintains suspense by actually having two simultaneous plots (although one is clearly a relative subplot).
The larger issue is that Magneto has taken control of the Sentinels (mutant-killing robots), and has declared himself ruler of New York City. One half of the X-Men deals with that, and the other half goes into space to rescue Corsair, Cyclops' father. I'll be honest - the latter plot is doomed to be filler from the start, and it doesn't occupy my interest much.
But beyond the plot pacing, the characterization is almost dead-on. The X-Men are just how I remember them from the comic books - complete with accurate dialogue, realistic character interaction, and even some personality development. It's a testament to Golden's skills that he continues to flesh out characters with over 20 (and in some cases, 30) years of history. Each of the characters has a particular worldview, and Golden not only gives each one fair representation, but he also gives the reader a deeper understanding of how each character ticks.
However, I do find that some parts of the novel degenerate into comfortable, "easy" writing. One of my complaints is Golden's description of both Deathbird and Henry Peter Gyrich (the two main villains in the novel) as "evil and insane." Ho-hum. Although he slips in a bit of irony by having Deathbird's obvious paranoia and insanity justified, he paints Gyrich as so thorough a bigot that he borders on contradicting established comic history (but then, that's a fanboy gripe).
I like it that Magneto, soon to be the principle villain of the story, receives very little attention and development in the first novel. His basic motivations and plans are spelled out at the very beginning, and then Golden proceeds to develop the character slowly as the novel proceeds. It's a great way to build suspense toward the inevitable takeover of New York.
In short, Siege is one of the best pieces of X-Men literature I have read, including the comic books. Christopher Golden has an excellent handle on the basics of fine writing, as well as the complex histories of his particular characters, and proceeds to combine them into an engaging and enjoyable tale. This novel stands alone for new readers, or even for people who don't want to buy the whole series (but be warned, the cliffhanger will make you want to read the other two books). And it will please all but the pickiest of longtime X-Men fans. Go for it.

Intelligent and thought provoking Sci-fi........2001-03-08
The aliens are dragon like beings, who exude chemical which are toxic to humans. Students have to wear special suits to protect them from the aliens.
The Ayan language is peripheral and non-direct, making mastery of it elusive to straight talking humans.
The story is set against the backdrop of a world divided between the haves and the have nots, those who have embraced the technology of the aliens and those who avoid it. And the symbol of Ayan technology is the Fine Hunt.
This is a well written and very intelligent book which sets a good xenophobic theme in a Sci-fi context with a wealth of futuristic technological themes running through it. Fine Prey is an example of Fine Sci-fi!
Deceptive depth.......2000-08-27
In fact, the exposition is the action. Fine Prey is a fascinating novel - a science-fiction/linguistics thriller, if there is such a thing. If not, Scott Westerfeld has invented it. Although the missing plot elements, like conflict, mean the novel is a bit slow in places, each chapter is driving the main character, Spider, towards the linguistic resolution.
Just as interesting as the central premise is the world in which Spider lives. In Fine Prey, Earth is a colony world; we've been taken - bloodlessly, I would imagine - by the remote, peculiar, and mostly benevolent Aya. They've given us technologies that utterly exceed our meager abilities, and we've succumbed to their patronage. In most SF novels, that would be the source of the plot, the conflict - in this one, it's the merest background. More a part of Spider's life is the mechanics of the Hunt, a popular game born out of Earth's old equine sports and the Aya's new technologies. Though the detailed descriptions of individual hunts are a bit gruesome, there aren't many of them, and the rest of the Hunt world is fairly interesting.
Overall, Fine Prey, which seems so light and insubstantial for most of the reading, is an involving book with a gripping premise and an unusual and well-described world. I think most SF fans would be glad to read this book.

Book Description
Most religious traditions have a rich, if largely forgotten, heritage of involvement in medical issues of life, death, and health. Religious values influence our behavior and attitudes toward sickness, sexuality, and lifestyle, to say nothing of more controversial subjects such as abortion and euthanasia. The essays in this important book illuminate the history of health and medicine within the Judeo-Christian tradition. Bringing together 20 original articles by expert scholars in the fields of the history of religion and the history of medicine, Caring and Curing provides a fascinating and enlightening overview of how religious values have come to affect the practice of medicine and medical care.

A Critical Analysis of Caring and Curing.......2002-11-22
The Judaic understanding of illness is that it is a punishment from God due to sin. One has wronged God and because of this God has given this person an illness so that he or she may suffer for one's sin. Christianity has a whole contrary meaning toward illness and views it as sanctifying and redemptive. Jesus bore the infirmities and sin of humanity and put this to death with His death on the cross. Human suffering due to illness can be united to Christ's suffering to be used as a means to conquer sin, not as a result of being conquered by sin. Infirmity brings one to a deeper understanding of Jesus' suffering and can be used to enter more into His divine nature. While Judaism views illness as a scourge from God because of sin, Christianity sees it as a means that God permits to defeat sin in humanity and continue the redemptive mission of Jesus.
Judeo-Christianity recognizes the identity of God as the Healer. In the Pentateuch God revealed to the Jewish people that He is the Lord who heals them (Exodus 15:26). The Jews held a special honor for physicians because they are instruments of God's healing power. In the Christian tradition, it is universally held that Jesus performed miraculous healings to demonstrate His divinity and to substantiate His message. The medical practitioner must realize one's role as an agent administering the healing power that has been entrusted to them to be done for the service of God and to be His channel for His healing love to pass through. There is an emphasis on authentic love and care towards the patient when one actually understands one's relationship in this continuum. The patient must also recognize that the care given to them by one's physician is truly God caring for him or her through this instrument.
My opinion of Caring and Curing is it is effective in providing a religious perspective of medicine from various faith traditions and allowing the reader to see the historical underpinnings in viewing health care and note the similarities and differences each tradition holds with regard to health. It is clear that the authors of these essays have a solid understanding of medicine. What I did not appreciate was the theological errors I found within several essays. These inaccuracies were misrepresentative of these faith traditions and revealed a lack of real knowledge of the tenets in itself. Nevertheless, the work fulfills its purpose in bringing a religious perspective to the perception of health and medicine to gain a deeper realization of the sanctifying value in its practice.

Product Description
Since the beginning of recorded history 6,000 years ago coins, particularly those minted from gold and silver, have served as storehouses of financial value. Collecting specific coins (as opposed to just accumulating masses of coins) is a more modern phenomenon, dating back over five centuries. As collectors discovered that some coins were harder to find than others, the concept of "rare coins" arose. The law of supply and demand created a premium for these coins above their face value or the value of the precious metals they contained In May 2005, a 1913 US Liberty nickel - one of only five of its type known to exist - was purchased in a private treaty sale for $4.15 million. Mike Sherman of Collectors Universe completed a study of all the original 1913 nickels since 1941, when they were first sold individually. (The five coins remained as a set until then.) Sherman recorded the prices from all 20 sales from 1941 to 2005; they showed an average return of 12.2% compounded annually. In 1913 each nickel, including the one that sold in 2005 for $4.15 million, was valued at $80. Although the 1913 Nickel is a low-population (5) coin, many other US rarities have also demonstrated extraordinarily high levels of appreciation. Dr. Raymond Lombra, Dean of Economics at Penn State University, in a study well talk about more, discovered that high-grade rare coins showed an average annual gain of 14.1% in the 25 years from 1973-1998

Each project includes a materials list and is demonstrated step by step with photos and sometimes illustrations. Helpful tips for each are also included. Though the instructions are good, there are no templates and some artistic talent or experience is necessary for many of the projects. My favorite projects include a washi doll, twisted paper box, and a pulp painting.
In the back there is a nice list of suppliers and websites as well as a few organizations and educational programs. There is also a directory of artists with contact information. If you want a sampling of the paper art or just need inspiration this is the book to get.

East West Style: A Design Guide for Blending Eastern and Western Elements at Home

The blending of two vastly different styles achieves stunning results in East West Style. It's far more than simply adding a Japanese painted screen to your comfortably overstuffed living room--it's about finding beauty in clean lines, unusual textures, and an overall balance of simplicity and opulence. With dozens of glossy photos and simply written text, author Ann McArdle clears the path to a wholly new style, using only the best of both worlds. At first glance, many of the rooms seem a little spare by western standards. On closer examination you'll spot comfortable couches with down-filled cushions, silk bed coverings, and deep baths meant for long, relaxing soaks. One sunny spot behind the kitchen sink is filled with a small rock-and-bamboo Japanese garden, a delightful new use of the ubiquitous bay window. Furniture ranges from the classic Eames chair to a plump, bright-yellow loveseat to an elegantly stark raised platform bed, each looking equally at home in its setting. Dramatic carved screens, Chinese silks, and unique ceramics are added in small doses, rather than as full-blown themes--the idea is to achieve harmony, balance, and a sense of peace that incorporates every element in your home and garden, paying attention to shape and ultimate effect rather than strict conventions. Accompanying the pages of inspiration is a shopping resource list, which will prove a great help as you head off on your way to a whole new interior style. --Jill Lightner

Excellent first book on fusing East and West styles.......2002-08-07
This book gives a very good introduction on paring American and European style furniture with Asian style furniture. There are plently of pictures and the writing is simple and easy to understand. One picture has a Le Corbusier Chaise Lounge ( LC 4) in the bedroom adjacent to a crocodile shaped teak bench in front of a bed. Most traditional modernists wouldn't have thought of such a pairing.
Other photos include a compact Eames Sofa in asian style living room.
There lots of screens ,bamboo and fabrics examples in the photos as well.
This book will be a great coffee table book as well. I've had lots of people pick it up when they come over.
The bottom line is that once you read and look at the pictures many times, you develop your own sense of style. This practice determines which style works for you.
This book will give you focus on your objective to combine the two elements in your home.
Perhaps one day, your living room, bathroom or bedroom will be featured on Metropolitan Home because of this book.
too unfocused.......2002-04-18
The other problem is the poor dilenation of topics. If you flip to a random picture in the book you'll have a hard time whether they are trying to tell you something about texture or proportion. Certainly, in a complete room all of the factors need to balance each other out, but without focusing on each one individually it is harder to grasp its importance.
There are a few hundred photos of designs that look like they would, for the most part, require expensive modifications (for instance, the kitchen with contrasting textures made of three separate materials or the dining room with the floor treatment). As another reviewer pointed out, virtually all of the photographs reflect a Japanese and (to a much lesser extent) Chinese aesthetic.
East is more than Japan.......2001-06-07
Great blend of western & Asian design.......2001-04-30
Since I am a crafter I am always on the lookout for the things I can make for myself and I saw many here that I could. My favorite idea is a Japanese-style dining table that is sunken into the ground. It looks so elegant and I am dreaming of having one someday. They also use lots of screens, which are one of my favorite elements with their beauty and versatility. I though an attic room with a semi-hidden bed was a great idea as well.
I appreciate the practical approach here of incorporating authentic Asian design into existing Western homes of various types. If you are looking for some fresh ideas for your home and want a simple, yet elegant style this book will give you some great ideas.
Excellent, thoughtful, serious and whimsical!.......2001-01-26
