This book continues the adventures of Jason and company in Haven. I really enjoyed the previous books and was hoping this one would be as great. Unfortunately, it seems rather rushed. There are so many ideas in this book that go absolutley no where. And the ending, well, its like running real fast and then falling of a cliff. Hopefully there is another book in the works.

This book was a little harder to follow than the rest of the books in the series.

Yet the Magickers were dealing with numerous hardships: teenage insecurities, raids/attacks by the Dark Hand, learning an entirely new culture that was hinted at the end of Dragon Gate, AND they were dealing with the real possibility of losing their magic.

It did take me a few reads through in order to get the full effect of the new world they find themselves in, little tidbits I had missed before began to stand out and helped bring everything together.

I'm getting close to 50, and my daughter just turned 20, and we BOTH benefit from the kind of helpful, preventive and life-saving information in this book. The authors have done a great job educating women about bone health -- a topic not many of us talk about with any frequency OR authority, but we should. I remember a grandmother with a broken hip, and how a simple fall set in motion a series of events that robbed her of the last years of her life. Women don't have to suffer any more, and they can start now -- no matter what age -- with the kind of information in "Outwitting Osteoporosis." This book saved my life!.......2003-05-09

Wow! This book worked miracles on me and my health. When the doctor told me I had osteoporosis, I didn't know what to do. He was barely any help. So I went to my local bookstore and picked up this book. Let me use 4 words to describe it: It saved my life. It gave me such helpful hints like "be careful not to fall down" and such. I totally reccomend this book! I couldn't put it down.

I don't know why I find this book such a comfort. But it is one. I have read and reread it for over thirty years now. Zen is very foreign to American life. And it is hardly the answer to that life. But it is a partial answer -- if its influence on me is any indication.

Expand Your Mind.......2007-01-06

Zen Buddisim doesn't have an official set of scriptures like all the other great religions of the world, but I consider this little dandy my set of Zen scriptures. These wonderful little Koans will considerably expand your mind and give you plenty to ponder upon or not to ponder upon. Each one can be read over and over again with new meaning sprouting forth each time. The book itself is a nice size and feels good to hold. I recommend this to anyone wanting to be at better peace with themselfs and everything around them. Beautiful.

I still own my battered, much-read paperback copy of this sublime little book, which I bought in 1971. To this day it seems to me the single best introduction to Zen available, not as theory or philosophy or even daily practice, but as direct experience. Like most of the previous reviewers, I can return to its pages again & again, finding wisdom & food for thought ... or non-thought, if you will. :)

Here is the paradox of mystery composed of absolute clarity & purity, as expressed through often humorous, even (seemingly) ridiculous stories ... yet they make sense at a very deep level, one that bypasses rational, logical thought or conscious understanding. Behind the sometimes giggling face of the monk is a most rigorous, utterly focused mind, one that cuts preconceptions & ego to ribbons.

For anyone interested in the essence of Zen, for anyone wanting to step outside of the world of ten thousand shallow, mass-produced things, this book is indispensable. Most highly recommended!

"Zen Flesh, Zen Bones" is probably the best introductory book to Zen Buddhism available in the United States. It is an anthology containing Zen stories and riddles. The prose is light; "Zen Flesh, Zen Bones" is not a weighty read that will discourage readers from delving into the subject matter. Read this book before any other on Zen!

You really don't know what to expect from the clone war, but you hope good conquers evil. This book is fantastic and the end of a great Trilogy. It would be nice to continue the story, but I think the authors leave the posibilities up to us. If you like Sci-Fi and have vision, this book will make you feel like you are right there.

A most satisfying conclusion.......2003-01-04

Tenebrea Rising provides a satisfying end to an ambitious trilogy.

In books one and two, Andrea became ruthless because of the evil done to her. Her mentor, K'Rin has long been ruthless because of his practical, if not exaggerated, sense of duty. The Jod's leader, Pl'Don, is ruthlessly ambitious as is his Cor counterpart, Admiral Brulk, who manufactures clones that he uses like ammunition. Even the Chelle, who offer comic relief, demonstrate a kind of pettifogging ruthlessness. The Chelle's arrogant meddling on Earth actually started the whole disordered mess.

All these unbridled self-interests collide in Tenebrea Rising. As with all moral tales, redemption comes from selflessness, embodied by the maternal (although ironically sterile clone Tara) and Andrea's companion, the noble H'Roo Parh. Andrea finally breaks hate's hold on her when realizes that she is becoming like K'Rin, the latest object of her hate.

The ending of Tenebrea Rising leaves many unanswered questions, but such is life. Andrea quips at the end, "Now we have a future," and we are left to wonder, what kind of future? These books are so much more than space opera--very enjoyable at one level, and deeper still.

Patient Readers Will Be Rewarded.......2003-01-01

Book Three of the Tenebrea Trilogy reads like it was rushed to print before it was fully polished. Tenebrea Rising delivers up some nice moments and a satisfying enough action climax, but ends far too abruptly and with far too many dangling plot threads. Its first half doesn't quite live up to the promise of Tenebrea's Hope, though it overcomes its early failings as events move along. The title is puzzling: the Tenebrea aren't really involved much after their initial rescue, and the authors don't particularly follow through on the implied theme of gradually rising fortunes.

Andrea and her team save the imprisoned Tenebrea, but then she learns the full extent to which K'Rin has used her and others for his own ends. Torn between heartache and rage, she breaks with the Tenebrea and swears to kill K'Rin if she ever sees him again. Considering her own ruthlessness in using others, she really shouldn't be throwing stones.

The Ordinate hit Jod, obliterating most of the fleet, pulverizing the capital, and annihilating the government. Then the Chelle make their own first move into open war with Jod, while Cor Admiral Brulk returns home to rebuild his intentionally sacrificed fleet and forces. K'Rin takes over as both military and civilian leader on Jod, making plans to wage a dual campaign against Cor and Chelle.

With Brigon, Eric, and Andrea overdue in returning to Cor, a crippled Tara leads the starving outlaw clones out of their wilderness retreat to fight the Ordinate at close quarters again. While she's finalizing the details of their proposed assault, the Tenebrea rescue team at last rejoins her with much-needed supplies, equipment, and tactical support from K'Rin. He needs the clones to help wipe out the Ordinate before Brulk gets back to fighting trim. Andrea comes along only as a favor to Brigon, wanting nothing more to do with K'Rin even at a distance.

After waiting all the way through Tenebrea's Hope for some major plot action, readers are again left waiting too long before things finally break in Tenebrea Rising. In the early chapters, the writing seems more clumsy and repetitive than in either previous book. References to prior events don't always agree with earlier accounts. As in Hope, there are too many scattered points of view, with choppy transitions that make it hard for readers' attention to remain engaged. Neither Andrea nor K'Rin shows up often enough or long enough to serve as a necessary anchor for the other story lines.

Once again, though, the patient reader is rewarded; the second half of the book is substantially better than the first. Except for one noble sacrifice, the key characters all get the outcomes they deserve. There are occasional philosophical asides and small action vignettes that rise above the rest of the story and show what the authors might accomplish after a bit more seasoning. The Chelle provide some welcome comic relief. Additional follow-up books might be expected.

"I Wish Tonight" is a beautifully written and illustrated book. The rhythmic verse is uplifting and inspirational with drawings depicting people of all races living together in harmony. And there is a great message... "We'll tell then that nothing can be bought or sold: In the land that I wish for no one will need gold..." -And my favorite- "...And let's make a great plan: that together we'll mend Anything that is broken, and carefully tend Everything in the world, keep it safe to the end... Soon, no one will know where the wastelands have been: The trees will grow tall and the deserts turn green, The air will blow clear and the rain will fall clean, And in shimmering streams silver fish will be seen"

Some (like my husband :)might think that it's too utopian and unreal...but I think that children ought to start out this way!! And hopefully never lose sight of our potential. How sad would it be for a four-year-old to see the world through cynical and jaded eyes? If you want a more grounded message with a storyline in the same spirit of open-minded acceptance, another great book is "Herb, the Vegetarian Dragon" (and you don't need to be vegetarian to appreciate it!!)

This book is an absolute treasure. I bought two copies of "I Wish Tonight". One for my son to look at now while he is still ripping books (he's only 16 months) and one to preserve for when he's older. It's that good!!

This book is essential for any holiday family traditions. Ms. Nathan not only shares some wonderful recipes (try the Orange Chicken - it's easy, fun and OUT OF THIS WORLD!......) but she also shares her family's traditions and give you wonderful ideas to enhance your own celebrations. My family loves this book and we refer to it on a regular basis.

Scott 2006 Sandard Postage Stamp Catalogue, Vol 1.......2007-01-10

I have been using Scott's stamp catalogue to organize a large collection of postage stamps collected over 50 years. This purchase represents an update of this catalogue for me. It also is the first time I have secured the item in disk form and will be an adjustment in the way I use the item. The catalogue allows me to organize and value (at least in a crude way) my stamp collecion. In the brief time I have used the new format, I like the fact that I can look at the pictures and text in very large format or if I am searching for something I can cover a lot using the zoom format.

According to the publisher, a printing problem caused many of the photos to be very light. I was also told that the problem will not be fixed in this volume (1 of 6), but future volumes will be ok.

If you want a better understanding of David Hockney buy this book. It is a wonderful display of illustrations and information of a great British artist.

"David Hockney: Paintings" is well written and organized to foster a greater understanding of how Hockney evolves over the course of his career. Moreover, you will be impressed by the outstanding quality of the the black & white and color illustrations.

Authors Paul Melia and Ulrich Luckhardt provide the reader an excellent insight to the artistic thoughts of David Hockney. It also studies and explains the tremendous global popularity of the artist. This is a great book to have in the house.

A Fan's Book.......2002-12-20

Being a tremendous fan of Hockney's work, I was delighted to find this beautiful and informative book.

I liked the chronological organization as the book traced the artist's development over the years. I always find this such an interesting perspective, seeing how an artist's vision changes and evolves. And I also liked the way that the relationship between Hockney's life and his art is explored.

The illustrations were grand too!

A worthwhile book and a good study of Hockney, his life, and his works.

I was more than pleasantly surprised by the extremely high quality of the reproductions. The book is split up in six chapters covering the main artistic phases in Hockney`s live and giving a lot of information about his paintings.
I find it extremely interesting not just to see Hockney`s work but also to read the details on the creative process leading up to the finished painting. A wonderful book!

Adequate summary.......2005-06-21

The book itself is a brief, well-illstrated summary of Hockney's work, from school in the 1950s up to the book's time, in the mid-nineties. Color reproductions are good, but lots of the paintings are shown in B&W, which I consider a loss. The text is workmanlike, but I have to admit I skipped most of it.

The problem is, I just don't much care for Hockney's work, and this book didn't change that part of my taste. Parts were interesting, like the relationships between his Polaroid collages and the paintings with rubbery perspective. Only just interesting, though.

I gave this four stars because it does seem to be a competent presentation of it's kind, but I've seen more impressive books dedicated to other artists. I'm sure Hockney fans will give a very different kind of review.
