Amazon.com
In Misery (1987), as in The Shining (1977), a writer is trapped in an evil house during a Colorado winter. Each novel bristles with claustrophobia, stinging insects, and the threat of a lethal explosion. Each is about a writer faced with the dominating monster of his unpredictable muse.
Paul Sheldon, the hero of Misery, sees himself as a caged parrot who must return to Africa in order to be free. Thus, in the novel within a novel, the romance novel that his mad captor-nurse, Annie Wilkes, forces him to write, he goes to Africa--a mysterious continent that evokes for him the frightening, implacable solidity of a woman's (Annie's) body. The manuscript fragments he produces tell of a great Bee Goddess, an African queen reminiscent of H. Rider Haggard's She.
He hates her, he fears her, he wants to kill her; but all the same he needs her power. Annie Wilkes literally breathes life into him.
Misery touches on several large themes: the state of possession by an evil being, the idea that art is an act in which the artist willingly becomes captive, the tortured condition of being a writer, and the fears attendant to becoming a "brand-name" bestselling author with legions of zealous fans. And yet it's a tight, highly resonant echo chamber of a book--one of King's shortest, and best novels ever. --Fiona Webster
Amazon.com Audio Review
If Misery loves company, it's found a friend in Academy Award nominee Lindsay Crouse (The Verdict, Places in the Heart). King's ghoulish tale of psychotic "number one fan" Annie Wilkes holding her favorite author, Paul Sheldon, prisoner, unfolds in perfect pitch. Crouse switches from Sheldon to Wilkes (think Kathy Bates) to narrator with smooth, flawless transitions, making the unabridged, 12-hour reading of a writer's hell a listener's paradise. (Running time: 12 hours, eight cassettes)
Book Description
Una novela de terror escalofriante del maestro de horror, Stephen King. Un gran bestseller.
Customer Reviews:
Face-paced and taught.......2007-10-05
Unlike many other famous Stephen King books (like The Stand), this book is tight. Since it's from the first-person POV, King doesn't do things like spend 3 pages describing one object like he is wont to do in many of his other books.
The book speeds by remarkably fast, and I doubt many people take more than 2-3 days to read the entire thing (as opposed to say reading Tommyknockers which I know people who have taken months or more to plow through.)
This is a great book to start for new King fans too, but isn't everyone already a King fan?
Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
The monster in this book is human, not supernatural. A crazed fan, obsessed with her favorite creator type, decides to keep him all to herself.
This involves imprisonment, physical and psychological abuse, shackles, weapons, and even a little bit more. Not a nice lady. A look at what can happen to famous people when they get an obsessed stalker.
There is no misery in reading Misery.......2007-08-29
This is an incredible book. One of King's best. It was nearly immposible for me to set down this book.
If you've watched the movie than you HAVE to read the book. The movie does it NO justice. Don't get me wrong the movie was good but the book was... read it. You'll understand then.
"I'm Your Number One Fan".......2007-08-22
This is one of my favorite books i've ever read. I've been a King fan since i was a kid and this is my second favorite of his (the first being The Shining). I had seen the movie prior to reading the book and i was still on edge with the book and constantly surprised. Theres so much in the book that is not in the movie. Also you really get to see the deconstruction of a human being. Paul Sheldon starts out as a normal guy and by the end of it he is reduced to his animal nature. Its a great read from start to finish and trust me you will not be disappointed. The character development is amazing and the suspense is worthy of sitting on the edge of your seat.
This Book Ain't No Cockadoody.......2007-08-14
MISERY is painful. Agonizing. Excruciating. Miserable. I liked it a lot.
Here's a study in pain. An author (Stephen King's favorite protagonist archetype) wrecks his car off the side of a secluded road and is rescued from the wreckage by his biggest fan--who just happens to be a homicidal, psychotic ex-nurse with an obsession. That obsession is the "Misery" series by Paul, our author hero.
Complications emerge when it becomes clear that the "Misery" character dies in Paul's latest and last (?) novel in that series. This does not bode well ... for now, in order to keep the psycho nurse happy, Paul--who lies in bed with shattered legs, stoned on painkillers--must somehow write this character back to life, or he will clearly die himself.
Now, if that won't ruin your weekend, you're a true optimist.
Intended as the next in the Bachman run of Stephen King books, Misery had to come out under King's true name when the pseudonym got leaked. King has theorized that this book may have catapulted Bachman to the center stage of writer's respect had it been given that chance. It probably would have. The book is that miserable--and good.

Book Description
Queen Jalena of Shkoder has decided to start her reign by commissioning a ship to undertake the exploration of uncharted waters and see if it is possible to circumnavigate the world. When disaster strikes, the sole survivor is the bard Benedikt who Sings only One Quarter, that of Water. Found by the people of a Mayan-like civilization, he becomes a pawn between the brother and sister who are the most powerful people in their culture.
Praise for Tanya Huff:
"Ms. Huff is a marvelous talent whose vibrant characterizations and intelligent plotting make each new book a very special reading experience. Bring on the next verse!" --Romantic Times
"I love the way Huff writes. She creates rich, complex fantasy worlds, populates them with likable characters, includes lots of humor and action, bright, lively dialogue....Unputdownable." --VOYA
Customer Reviews:
You just can't like him.......2007-01-30
The hero of this story, and I use that term lightly, is not a likeable character. He's whiney, selfish, arrogant and absorbed by his own sexual needs. This does little to distract from an interesting story about a powerful singer of water and the manner in which the other bards band together to repair their fractured community. It is fine continuation of the four quarters series and most readers should enjoy it. Just don't expect to like or identify with the main character much.
enthralling and thrilling.......2005-04-12
This is the first book I have ever read by Ms Huff and I willingly admit I was truly charmed.
Her writing is good enough (despite some minor plot inconsistencies and typos: what are the editors at daw books paid for, I wonder?) and the story is interesting if not particularly original.
In this book Ms Huff shows off with two main skills:
the first is the ability of building up a breathtaking tension such as it will not allow you to put the book down until you have finished it;
the second is her characterization: Benedict, the main character, is a frustrating, self indulgent, self pitying, annoying, bothering, immature brat you soon care for. He made me scream with vexation because of his weaknesses: Ms huff brings to life a man you simply want to give a good smack first and go to bed with after.
The other characters are well rounded, finely depicted with special mention for the main villain, a woman I simply wanted to throttle painfully and slowly to death.
Two flaws:
the ending is too succint and brutal: after building so much tension in the heart of your reader you MUST allow him/her to untie these knots with a satisfying, extended ending. this does not happen and i found myself staring at the last page hungering for some release.
Ms Huff, as nearly all of her she-fellow-writers is bold enough to write about same sex relationships and she does it with pleasant and commendable open mindedness.
Still she seems to be convinced that a gay character (and Benedict IS gay, after all) can feel at least sexual attraction not just for one but for every woman. Surely enough these are fantasy worlds, so the author is entitled to write what she likes about sexual habits, but in my experience most gay men are unable to feel physically for a woman (let alone ANY woman) whereas they MAY feel attracted to her mind.
True bisexuality is in my experience very seldom to be found.
This notwithstanding the liaison between Benedict and Bannon (a lovely character) is moving and touching and Benedict's proneness for physical contact with kigh (the elementals bards command) is teasing.
Because of the shocking brutality of many pages I strongly recommend no youngster be allowed to read this book
Best of the "Quarters" series.......2004-03-09
I think this is the best of her "Quarters" series. Benedikt is a bard who has an inferiority complex because he can only sing one quarter, water - never mind that he is the best who sings water that ever lived. He goes on an expedition to discover new lands, and disaster strikes in the form of a storm. He is stranded in a strange country, and soon finds himself embroiled in a political battle and in danger of his life. Tanya Huff is as good as ever. She puts you in the middle of the story and in the heart of the characters, and you feel and suffer along with the hero.
A good story, all things considered.......2003-10-12
The main character works as an anti-hero. I didn't like his evident homosexuality--my own views in that regard are not liberal ones. But the story is interesting, the dialog natural, the characterization (usually) somewhat appealing, and the plot flows along smoothly, if slowly here and there. A far better book in this same general style is L.E. Modesitt Jr.'s "The Magic of Recluse." But The Quartered Sea is worth reading, say, when the electricity goes off in your house and you have nothing better to do.
Read the other 3, not this one.......2001-09-07
This book was trite, with poor character development. And I could never really care for the main character. I was very disappointed. I enjoyed Sing the Four Quarters for the humour and character. The Fifth Quarter was even better. No Quarter was just okay. But, this book was just awful.
Customer Reviews:
This book is worth tracking down.......2006-04-29
It took me 16 years to get to this book, and it was worth it. I wish Starlin did more work today, his excellent Marvel work made me hunt this down.
Forget the comparison to The Stand........1999-09-21
I thoroughly enjoyed this tautly written little novel. No, it's not The Stand but, then again, one was enough. (Oh, that's right, King found it necessary to re-release The Stand with an additional 400 pages added to an already too long book!) Anyway, this story dealt with the day to day life of a small group of people who have managed to survive in a world gone mad, literally. Something had occurred that caused most of the population to go insane. Sometimes, while watching the news, I think that may already have happened to the real world.
good story ... too much a Stephen King clone though.......1998-11-23
Not a bad story and a good, fast little read. We follow the day to day life of a small town in a post-apocolyptic world as our hero tries to maintain law and order in an increasingly savage world. Each chapter is highlighted by original illustrations by Jim Starlin, some of which are quite good. Unfortunately, for any who have read Stephen King's The Stand, this book can come across as a refresher course. Stralin and Graziunas' writing is tight though, and their characters have a real quality to them. I just can't get over the comparisons to the Stand enought to give it a stronger grade

A deep look into the friendship gap between men.......2006-08-04
Locking Arms by Stu Weber is a profound book. He examines the importance of male friendships throughout history and in the Bible between Jesus and his diciples. I found the book to be a vital tool in understanding the complexity and difficulty of establishing long term male frienships. This book surely sheds light on the missing link of masculine friendships. If we don't lock arms as the author illustrates using many examples, then we are destined to exit to the False Roads To Manhood, abandoning the essence of male friendship, share values, unselfish love, deep loyalty, and real transparency to reach authentic manhood.

Locking Arms (Man - to - Man).......2000-07-06
Locking arms is a book that discusses those relationships/friendships that men share. The book was a pleasure to read and it really hit home because no matter how macho a man is, he never wants to face life alone. Stu Webber really touches the intimate side of Godly male friendships. How they develop and how they last. I highly recommend this book to any man desiring to dive deeper into true Godly manhood friendships. One chapter that touched me in particular was when Webber talked about the "military buddy" I thought back to my days in basic training and how they forced us to choose someone to be our buddy. We were to share some triumphs and some defeats during the weeks to come and even thought I was never in battle I still have very fond memories of those times and the friendships developed.

Disappointing.......2007-06-27
Venison, rack of lamb, Squab Dijionnaise, Milanese Cornmeal Cakes with Herbs and Bacon, Lord Baltimore's Crabmeatn in Ramekins... not the type of items that I think of when I want to grill. Would have been helpful if the book was referred to as "gourmet" faire. Don't believe I will ever use this brand new book.
The Best Cook Book EVER!.......2005-02-08
What Rick Marx has done here is truly nothing short of incredible. This is the definitive book of grilling. I've tried several of his ideas, and each is a winner. If you have ever even considered buying a cook book for grilling, this is THE one you must have.

My Mama Loved It!.......2006-07-20
Anyone who thinks that Vegans and Vegetarians have a bland diet has obviously not read this book. Far from your typical cook book, this will give you ideas that will take you to places that no other vegan resource has up until now. The author recognizes that vegetarians and vegans still crave variety. He also recognizes that they also want to enjoy traditional favorites, such as vegan hot dogs and hamburgers - and he shows you how to make them practically indistingusihible from the "real thing" in terms of taste. Vishny is the Lord Byron of the Vegan/Vegatarian world!

very complete.......2002-08-11
I received this cookbook last week and really have just started using it but so far so good. There's a great intro section where the author goes through pretty much every vegetable you'd put on the grill and gives quick ideas on how to grill them. There are some really tasty basting sauces. Inside the book, on every two pages there's a beautiful picture of the meal on one side and on the other page the 2-3 recipes you'll need to make the picture become your dinner. Recipes are short and to the point and are interesting. Great uses for stuffing grilled vegetables with different grains, etc. A fun cookbook - definitely an asset for the vegetarian griller!
Waddaya mean it's out of print? I WANT it!.......2000-06-01
I borrowed this book from my local library and I love it! I want my own copy, but now I find out it is out of print. What a shame!
This book offers a lovely presentation of vegetables and veggie-centered meals prepared on the grill. The author provides a comprehensive guide to grilling vegetables, and offers some inspiring menu-grouped recipes for marinated, grilled, sauced, and otherwise SMOKIN' vegetables. I love to see pictures of recipes, and this book does not disappoint in the illustrations.
I'm already a fan of the butter baste on page 53, having used it on corn and Vidalia onions.
So little attention is given to veggies on the grill, and so much flavor is brought out when they are grilled. I'm glad to see some print space devoted to them. But unless I can find a used copy somewhere, I guess I'm doomed to repeatedly borrowing my library's copy, until I've committed it to memory.
Terrific.......1997-12-28

North America's One Hundred Greatest Decoys.......2005-07-28
I found this book one of the most inspirational books for a carver that is interested in wildfoul carving. My friends that do not carve enjoyed the book for the pictures and history.I would definitely suggest it to anyone,it makes a good coffee table and reference book.
Great Color Pictures.......2003-07-24
This is a great book to view some fascinating decoys. I only wished that the text would go into more detail. Overall this is a great decoy book
Book Description
For the veteran carver or the newest devotee of the hobby, carving vegetables can be educational, fun, and surprising. We're not talking pumpkins here, but real carving, using woodcarving tools and techniques. Instead of wood, though, Tom uses sweet potatoes, which are firm enough to take the knife, and inexpensive enough to take a mistake or two. That makes them the perfect medium for new carvers or for experienced carvers learning new techniques. And there is more!!! As the vegetables dry and wizen, they take on wrinkles and twists that give them truly surprising and delightful character. Like woodcarvings, carved vegetables become a permanent artistic expression. Tom Wolfe came upon sweet potatoes when a teacher asked for an alternative to soap for her young carving students. Now Tom becomes the teacher, taking the reader step-by-step through the carving of three projects. A gallery of finished works is included, some in both their freshly carved and wizened states. This is the perfect introduction to the great and fun art of woodcarving. , 190 color photos, 8 1/2" x 11"

1881. A sketch of the life, character, and opinions of William Law. He was one of the ablest of theological writers in a period remarkably fertile in theological literature. He lived a pure and conscientious life of Christian self-denial, at a time of great spiritual deadness. He was, in his later years, almost the only notable representative in England of a phase of Christianity which has attracted and helped to form many saintly characters.
