Book Description

The momentous events of a turbulent century--witnessed through the lives of two powerful families.

For years, the Southern town of Nashborough has been dominated by the Nash and Douglas families. In the 1920s, Seneca Nash, a brilliant lawyer, and his beautiful, courageous, and thoroughly undomesticated wife Dartania née Douglas, continue to epitomize the Southern traditions and social order that defined their ancestors. A way of life, they are certain, which will continue for their own children. But in the next three decades, overwhelming change--economic depression, world war, popular culture, civil rights--will sweep across the American landscape, irrevocably affecting them all. Yet the most shattering changes will come from within each family itself, as a new generation fights to break free from the stifling customs of the past. And for the Nashes and Douglases, life--and their beloved Nashborough--will never be the same.

2 out of 5 stars Could have been much better.................2002-09-08

I usually love long family sagas and had great expectations for Nashborough. This novel started out well enough, but I just skimmed the final third...

My main problem was that none of the principal characters were likable or even that interesting. The sister, jasmine, who sleeps with her brother-in-law (all the while emphasizing the value of family!) critisizes her sister's wedding. The family is rather cold amongst each other, yet places themselves above all others. To them anyone else is an outider. When an alcoholic brother leaves his young bride and their children they assume the wife must have been boring!? What kind of family is this!?

Other than such meanness (clannishness they call it). Not a lot happens. This is surprising since the novel spans much of the turbulent twentieth century. Major events such as WWII and the Depression are mentioned, but really do not impact these selfish people.

I wish this had been better. By the way, Rona Jaffe's The Road Takes is a much more pleasant family saga!

This was simple mean spirited & tedious.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2002-08-21

I love family sagas, and for the most part for me the longer the book the better. I love the way that the characters develop and interact with each other, and in a truly well written family saga there is the added attraction of major world historical events to put their lives into perspective. Alas, this book has very little of this.

The interesting characters are there, sure enough, but we learn almost nothing of them. They have joys and terrible tragedies, and these are all glossed over as we march through the years. There is no true development of the lives of the families - they are all entirely superficial. Even when one of the main characters goes to war and becomes famous for his heroics, this is dealt with in one or two paragraphs.

The author certainly has talent, and I'm sure it will develop, but this is a very disappointing effort, and I struggled to finish it. Even then I got the impression that she was in a hurry to finish the book. There are far superior family sagas on the market.

3 out of 5 stars An endless Southern saga.......2002-05-22

I have an inexplicable fascination with the South, so I'm often drawn to books that are set there. And this book does give a detailed depiction of upper-class Southern life (how accurate, I don't know). But it's soooooo slow! And there are so many characters you'll be glad that there's a glossary listing them in the back of the book.

Because of the large cast of characters, there is very little character development. It's hard to feel connected with any of them as they fritter about, having babies and drinking endless pitchers of martinis.

2 out of 5 stars No epic, but an admirable freshman debut.......2001-11-26

Nashborough, in television mini-series fashion, follows the lives of two early prominent families in the fictional Southern town of Nashborough. It follows the two families from their pre-Roaring '20s days of wealthy privilege, through the crash of the great depression and all the way up to an unidentified recent time period.
It is a grand attempt (400+ pages) at an epic novel that covers historical fiction of the South, an interesting plot, and social commentary of the issues that faced the South in the 20th century.
At moments, it does each of these very well. The final 100 or so pages present page-turning fiction at its best. It deftly presents social commentary in spurts throughout the book (I especially enjoyed the book's subtle but effective treatment of Blacks in the South). And it's capture of certain historical elements is impressive.
This book, however, does not do any of the above consistently enough to make it a recommended read. The book begins dreadfully slowly with little real action or intrigue until its midpoint. Only through dogged determination and professional pride did I reach the last part of this book that made the novel worthwhile.
I never found a character that was truly likeable. As the characters deal with life's ups and downs, admirable traits are greatly overshadowed by human failings. As a general rule, the characters never resolve the errors that bring them such personal grief and end up dead or unfulfilled.
Realistic though this novel may be, its plot becomes depressing and hopeless. Even the only antebellum mansion that gets restored to its former beauty becomes a ruin in the end.
The author seems to have strived for an epic novel but took on more than can be done well in one novel. The brief glimpses of the historical periods were unfulfilling and disappointingly brief. The use of historical snippets to bolster the setting are too brief to provide a true setting. And the dropping of historical names becomes irritating.
An impressive freshman debut, Nashborough leaves me looking forward to future, less-ambitious projects by Elsie Burch Donald. But, in Nashborough, she took on more than can be handled deftly.

4 out of 5 stars A smooth sip of a cool drink.......2001-08-08

"Nashborough" goes down as smoothly as a nip of mint julep on a hot Tennessee day. It is a fine, stately novel, written with a grace and intelligence that makes it read more like an English family saga than an American one. Not surprising, considering that author Elsie Burch Donald is a transplanted southerner living in England and France.

There's something satisfyingly old fashioned about this book, which is refreshing in this day of the overheated Southern family saga. Characters are developed with care into surprising people, and while the plot covers a lot of ground it does so at the right pace. Donald has caught the rhythms of the long hot afternoons, the family expectations, and the maneuvering to keep up with a changing world.

There are plenty of unexpected turns in "Nashborough" and the novel will keep you engaged from start to finish. Take this book and find a good hammock. This is an elegant way to pass some late summer afternoons.

5 out of 5 stars Great Work From a National Treasure.......2005-01-08

I write this review just days after the death of Will Eisner. I came to be fan of his work rather recently (4 years ago or so), specifically because DC Comics had begun archiving his most famous creation, the Spirit.

I'm not sure if Eisner was at his pinnacle here, simply because once Eisner came back to the series after WW II, the quality of the series continued to go up. Each volume has been better than the last. I suppose when the series is completely archived, I'll know for sure. As it stands, what is collected in the volume is just great.

Eisner was obviously continuing to play around with the medium proper, as well as the weekly seven-page format. In this volume, Eisner creates six stories comprising an extended continuing arc. Three stories are dedicated to the Spirit's "final" battle with the arch-nemesis, the Octopus. A master criminal, the Octopus's face was never seen (save for one brief glimpse of his eyes), only his gloved hands, which were more than capable of communicating his evil. While the Spirit triumphs (although not completely, as the epilogue suggests), the battle leaves him blind. Thus follows another three stories as the Spirit attempts to go about his crime-fighting without his sight. The third story, "Into the Light", is one of the greatest Spirit stories ever, as Eisner allows an unusual amount of internal monologue from the Spirit, as he sinks deeper into despair.

While Eisner was in the Army, his various substitutes on the series allowed many of his most famous concepts and characters to go dormant. When Eisner returned, he brought those ideas out in full force, as well as adding new ones. He dusted off the year-end "Christmas Spirit" stories, brought back Spirit ally Satin, and pulled back the focus off of pure crime stories. He also added new femme fatale P'Gell (see volume 13), a basically amoral female foil for the Spirit who played an interesting ongoing role in the Spirit's adventures, including uneasy ally. In this volume, Eisner introduced another supporting character, Patrolman Sam Klink, who at first seeks to show-up the Spirit in the crime-fighting biz, but eventually becomes his staunchest ally.

Conceptually, Eisner also introduced "the Halloween Spirit" series, as well as "The Spirit's Favorite Fairy Tales for Juvenile Delinquents", little parodies of fairy tales that incorporate unsavory characters in familiar roles. These are clever little stories, with nifty twists on old favorites, incorporating elements of hard-boiled fiction, nifty satire, and a dose of comedy reminiscent of the Warner Brothers "Merry Melody" cartoons.

Finally, Eisner was noticeably more satirical in this volume. The most obvious one is "Li'l Adam" a parody of the comic strip biz, as someone tries to murder Al Slapp (read "Li'l Abner" creator Al Capp). Was it one of his rivals (all dopplegangers for famous strip creators)? A second one, also quite funny, is "U.F.O", an alien invasion story written in response to the supposed landing at Roswell, N.M., as well as a being a jab at the hubris of celebrity, personified by Awsome Bells, a clever parody of Orson Welles. Eisner could be satirical, but never quite so bitingly.

We've lost a national treasure, and I'm glad to see people are recognizing it. Do yourself a favor and get this series, as well as his graphic novels. All are worth it.

4 out of 5 stars more Spirit fun.......2004-11-13

The Spirit is a crime fighting hero who uses ingenuity and physical skill, rather than super powers, to defeat evil. He is witty likeable and politically incorrect. The comic pioneered many layout techniques and so many super heros are modeled after The Spirit. The story lines and comics hold up even now more than 60 years later and I recommend for comic book fans to try out the series.

Volume 15 contains Spirit comics published from July 6, 1947 to December 28, 1947. They feature P'Gell and The Octopus among other villains. The introduction is by N.C. Christopher Couch, co- author of The Will Eisner Companion.

I recommend this series to all comics fans. The Spirit was very influential and the stories are still good to read now. I recommend that libraries consider purchasing the entire series, because this is a unique opportunity to archive the entire run of a very influential comic.

Though it is rich with Twilight Zone-esque images, sexual and racial stereotypes, and charmingly transparent plots, this anthology is surprisingly refreshing. After a full decade of cybermania and nanotech angst, Science Fiction Classics offers a trip through time to a more innocent, earnest age. It's amusing to see how mistrusting of science our forefathers were, even as they embraced it; but it's even more interesting to examine the roots of today's SF and wonder where the next generation will go with it. Science Fiction Classics allows us to graph science fiction's various incarnations--from dark, paranoid horror stories; drippy fairytales; and florid, pulpy SF to the more modern character-driven sagas; huge-scale space operas; and the aggro-techno seizures of the '90s. With few exceptions--one of which is "Farewell to the Master" on which The Day the Earth Stood Still is based--these stories are not works of art. In fact, some of them are downright hard to get through. What they are is a loosely focused prism through which we can examine the genesis of a genre. --Jhana Bach

I ordered this book, hoping it included EIGHT O'CLOCK IN THE MORNING by Ray Nelson (basis for THEY LIVE). It does! The surprise is the other selections included, among which are the stories that inspired such films as, THIS ISLAND EARTH, THE THING , DEATH RACE 2000, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, and INVASION OF THE SAUCER MEN. I especially recommend "The Alien Machine", "The Cosmic Frame", "Who Goes There?", and "The Racer". While none of these tales could be called a masterpiece of the genre, collectively they are a great read. Get this book!

    Book Description

The first book to seriously study the double goddess that figures prominently in Neolithic and Bronze Age cultures.

    • Offers an important symbol for modern women seeking to reconnect with their ancient, integral sense of self and wholeness.

    • Presents an archetype for the sacred potential of female bonding, whether between mother and daughter, teacher and student, friends, or lovers.

    • Illustrated with 149 examples of double goddess images.

Numerous figures depicting two women in intimate relation with one another, or as a single body with two heads, have been discovered in important centers of early civilizations such as Catal Huyuk and Gozo. These have been routinely ignored by scholars or dismissed as mere dolls with no sacred connotations whatsoever. Vicki Noble shows, to the contrary, that this double goddess is an ancient icon that can considerably expand our understanding of female sovereignty, as well as provide contemporary women with a way to reconnect with the integral sense of self and wholeness enjoyed by their ancestors.

Ancient Goddess religion was informed by the organic cycles of nature--the dual poles of Life and Death. The double goddess represents phenomena such as the Earth-Moon pair, the Upper-Underworld pair, the Summer and Winter poles of the seasonal year, and the dual poles of the female biological reality of menstruation and ovulation--the dark and the light. The double goddess in all her varied forms also depicts the vast array of potential relationships women can form with themselves and each other. This book is a celebration of an archetype that not only empowers women, but also teaches them how to share that power with each other.

5 out of 5 stars Vicki Noble offers groundbreaking book.......2005-11-20

Vicki Noble has given us an indepth and detailed look into the rich archeological discoveries of female representations that help us to understand and explore woman's roles and knowledge at a time when woman were publicly prominent as healers and leaders. These historic double goddess figures have never before been documented like this!! This is original research done by the author herself in collaboration with other prominent scholar's work. This manuscript, complete with drawings of the figures, offers a wide historical glimpse of too often ignored and deliberately hidden cultural practices that affirm women. While reading this book I felt stimulated and inspired to reaffirm my committment to myself not to shrink in deference to the status quo but to let myself be a woman who helps to shape our society into a more livable nurturing one. The book offers positive historic female role models and affirms embodied numinous and female shamanic healing states that the unearthing of these powerful double goddess and other goddess figures have reaffirmed. Vicki Noble's work is profoundly needed in a time of backlash against all of the important progress that has been made toward equality in the US.

1 out of 5 stars Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.......2004-07-09

I bought this book sight unseen, believing it to be a book about pairs of goddesses worshipped in the ancient world. It could have been great--it could have dealt with double goddesses such as Demeter/Persephone, Isis/Nephthys, and Inanna/Ereshkigal. And at first, that's what it seems to be. Noble draws on Jungian ideas and talks about the "bright" ovulatory half of women's cycles, and also the "dark" menstrual side of the cycle, and how this relates to double goddesses where one governs life and the other death. So far, so good.

But Noble strays too far from the facts and wanders into pseudohistory and fanaticism. She uses statues of paired women from prehistoric times, and sometimes even statues of paired androgynous figures, to "prove" that all societies in prehistoric times were ruled by Dual Queens, one presiding over war and the other over spirituality and peace. She also posits that this should be the case again, with all peoples ruled by Dual Queens, and males reduced to something like breeding stock.

I seem to remember, in her earlier book Motherpeace, that the Emperor and the Hierophant were presented as negative images, and that the Emperor and Hierophant were like "Dual Kings" of patriarchal society, ruling respectively over war and religion. And these men oppressed women, forbidding them any important place in the world, and treated them as nothing but baby-makers. How is is any better if it's women doing the sexist oppression?

This book isn't doing me any favors as a feminist or as a pagan. I don't want women to trample all over men. I want equality. And I think I speak for the majority.

    5 out of 5 stars Remarkable!.......2004-05-02

Ms. Noble's courage and penetrating intelligence shine through every word of this remarkable, ground-breaking exploration of the history and imagery of the feminine shamanic psyche.

She speaks with compassion from the wisdom of where she lives: in the very depths of where most of us dare not go. Starhawk, Riane Eisler and Maria Gjimbutas have all guided us to this place!

5 out of 5 stars The Double Goddess.......2003-08-29

With this book, Vicki Noble moves us towards that nurturing, loving culture we so desperately want. Throughout "The Double Goddess: Women Sharing Power" are extraordinarily beautiful images of Neolithic and Bronze Age women, side-by-side. According to Noble, these figurines refer to the dual poles of the female, the ceaseless rhythms between bleeding and ovulation, life and death, dark and light, feminine yin and feminine yang, priestess and Amazon. This radical internal polarity gives us our diversity and unity as women, enabling us to break free from stereotypes and allowing us to be innovative, carrying new ideas into embodied existence and giving them shape.

As a professor of Women's Spirituality at universities in Tokyo, I will use "The Double Goddess: Women Sharing Power" in the classroom, as I have Vicki Noble's other books, "Shakti Woman: Feeling Our Fire, Healing Our Earth" and "Motherpeace: A Way to the Goddess Through Myth, Art and Tarot."

4 out of 5 stars A Great Cookbook for Moving Beyond Boring Breakfasts.......2001-12-29

Tired of the standard breakfast fare such plain pancakes, instant oatmeal, and dry cereal, and unable
to do unhealthy meals such as biscuits and sausage gravy on anything but the rare occasion, I went
hunting for a cookbook devoted specifically to breakfast foods. I didn't exactly find the shelves
overflowing with such cookbooks - but fortunately, this was one of them. Compared to the other
sparse offerings available in the bookstore, this one was the definite winner. Not necessarily due to
the number of recipes, because this cookbook isn't exactly overflowing with them, but because of
what looked like quality past what others I saw. As stated by the book jacket, they are not your
traditional breakfasts in any manner - each recipe has unusual ingredients for the type of food, each
is fancier than what you're used to - and plenty of them aren't that much harder to make.

So, deciding that even a single recipe that was good would be worth it, I purchased the book. It
ended up being a while until I made anything from it - not from not wanting to, mind you, just that it
took some time to actually be willing to get up and make breakfast. Finally, one morning, we got up a
bit earlier, and decided to make something for breakfast. Finally, instead of looking in the book and
thinking "I need to make this someday", I actually did it. And the recipe was not only simple to follow,
but the breakfast was most definately worth it.

There is a large variety of recipes in the book, many that I would never think to make for breakfast.
Heck, there are some that I probably will never make, as they're not my style. But that's ok, because
there are plenty more that I definately will have to make some morning. The recipes are not just your
casual weekend breakfast fare, either - very few dishes seem like they would not be appropriate for
serving to company - or even a fancy breakfast. I am very, very happy with this book, as everything
made so far has been downright delicious. Sometimes I feel I can't decide what to make for breakfast,
they all look so incredibly good.

At the beginning of the book, there's even a little description of their Inn, their attitude toward
breakfast (as a "forgotten" meal), and a short description of the area the Inn is located in. At the end
is a selection of menus for special events, such as a Bridal breakfast, sunrise picnic, a brunch buffet,
or a hands-on breakfast for kids. They have lists of things that can be done two days in advance,
and one day in advance, to make it easier to make the food on the morning of the event.

    5 out of 5 stars Morning Glories.......2001-12-26

This is an excellent book for a special breakfast or brunch event. The recipes are innovative and do turn out well. I contacted the author and she indicated there were several printing errors - the biggest one being the Croissant Cinnamon Buns (she was very upset because this is her most POPULAR recipe!) The flour should be 6 cups - not 4 - or feel free to add as much flour as necessary to make a workable dough. I hope everyone enjoys these wonderful recipes as much as I do. The croissants are awesome!

    2 out of 5 stars Recipe Error.......2001-05-20

Photos are beautiful and recipes are inspirational, but the first one I tried, "Croissant Cinnamon Raisin Buns", seems to have a major error. The ratio of liquid to flour (2-1/2 cups milk plus 1/3 cup water to 4 cups of flour) makes a dough so thin it can be "poured out" but not "rolled out" as instructed. Hopefully, the remaining recipes are more accurate.

5 out of 5 stars Great Original Recipes for Entertaining.......2000-07-09

This is a beautiful cookbook with exquisite photos of Pennsylvania Dutch Country and of the delicious food served at the Inn at Twin Linden. The originality of the recipes and the fact that they turn out beautifully just adds to the enjoyment of this cookbook.

          Book Description

Geoffrey Godden's Handbook is the standard pocket reference for amateurs and professionals alike-the authoritative guide to identifying British ceramics. Continuously in print since 1968, it has now been thoroughly revised, updated, and expanded to incorporate the latest research on historic porcelain manufacturers and potters. The main section covers the principal firms: the marks used by each firm, their address, working period, and the dates of each mark. In addition, the Handbook records over 700 combinations of initials known to have been used by the listed potters, including their working periods, and full details on 900 Staffordshire potters. A new listing of pattern and shape registrations from 1842 to 1883 has been added, along with guidance on the collectibility of the main types. Anyone interested in British ceramics will find this new edition invaluable-compact, handy, and packed with the latest essential information. Geoffrey Godden is the leading authority on British ceramics.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Book for Collectors of English Pottery.......2007-02-28

This is the essential book if you collect English pottery. I have found it useful as both a collector and dealer. In fact, my old hardbound copy is falling to pieces from use. I am so glad to have this paperback edition for day to day reference. Dr. Godden has tapped sources for mark information that no one else has used. Everyone copies from him.

          1 out of 5 stars NOT HELPFUL!!.......2004-01-11

I have several books on pottery. This is the worst. I almost never find the marks I need to find, while the other reference books I have DO have them. I do not recommend this book!

                      Book Description

Using projects to demonstrate the various aspects and different styles of carving to the newcomer, this step-by-step guide shows how to approach the craft without the assistance of large machinery. Each project is specifically chosen to introduce new techniques. Projects are small, useful, fun to carve, and can be completed in a few days or over a weekend. Major techniques such as carving in the round, relief carving, knife work, and working with burrs and rasps are covered. The projects presented help beginning woodworkers to learn particular carving techniques that they can then employ on more complex projects.

This book was an absolute waste of money. All it is has in it is photos of different projects the author did. It's like a portfolio of his work and nothing more. The projects aren't even that great looking. There is no instruction in the book as to how he did what he did. It just shows a photo of one stage and then the next photo jumps to the next stage with the author commenting on what he did but not HOW he did it. "Next I carved out the..." VERY helpful! Don't waste your money. The other individual who gave this lousy book 5 stars is obviously the author or a shill friend of his. "Very well explained" my foot!

                          Book Description

Introducing tile and stone into the home gives designers and homeowners an artistic medium like no other. Reclaimed, antique terra-cotta tile can transform a high-rise city kitchen into a French countryside retreat. Italian mosaic tiles hand-assembled in geometric borders and colorful murals can turn an ordinary bathroom into an oasis of luxury.

This book traces the latest designs using tile, stone, and mosaic. Through beautiful photography and illustrative text, installations for every room in the house-kitchens, bathrooms, living rooms, and more-are presented. Renowned designers and tile manufacturers from around the world share their exquisite creations.

In this high-tech world, tile, stone, and mosaics can fulfill our innate desire for tactile design. With these materials, we can create homes that are sensual places where the feel of cool stone beneath bare feet is as important as its deep, rich color or how the sunshine illuminates it.

For interior designers, homeowners, and apartment dwellers, this book is an essential guide to using tile and stone to decorate. It will surely inspire.

                                      Book Description

How do your find an illustrator to create a piece of work? At present, there are a number of methods: looking through myriad agents' promotional books; browsing annual competition collections; trying to find that pile of unsolicited illustrators' cards you just had on your desk the other day; searching the web -- for a few hours!; asking a colleague. All of these methods can work, but they're all time-consuming and haphazard.

What if you need someone to draw some salad on a plate with a glass on wine next to it? You could go through the above processes, and -- after a while -- you'd probably find someone to draw or paint it in the style you wanted. Or you could pick up The Big Book of Illustration Ideas. Flip to the section marked "Food and Still Life" and find pages and pages of illustrators who can draw all manner of food in all manner of styles: pencil, crayon, watercolor, collage, and so on, and so on. A smorgasbord of illustration ideas! In fact, within these pages, you'll find the best illustrators, from all over the world, found together in one place along with all their contact details.

For ease of reference, illustrators' work is cataloged by theme: People; Portraits; Food and Still Life; Buildings; Landscapes; Abstract Concepts; Diagrams; and Miscellaneous. Each section shows hundreds of examples to allow a quick and accurate list of illustrators suited to your needs.

Además tiene muchísimas páginas completas de ilustraciones a todo color y en cantidad de estilos. This was a gift, I love ashley wood, but I expected that there be maybe one or 2 painted peices throughout the whole book. It looks like this is a sketch compilation. Also its overtly sexual for the most part. Take that as good or bad as you wish. Wood still presents amazing talent and education - thrilling pieces.

                                      4 out of 5 stars Sencilla Fanta.......2005-09-30

As Ashley Wood says in the introduction for this book, it's not like a completed book, it's messy, and full of unfinished drawings, yet it keeps all of Ashley Wood's work fascinating look, girls, robots and weird people dwell this book and make it a must for any fan of Wood's creation, and of course of all the addicted to illustration...

The Graphic Idea Resource series is a collection of graphic design work selected by designers for designers. Each book in the series is dedicated to a specific area of graphic design, creating an affordable library of design inspiration.

Graphic Idea Resource: Color demonstrates strong graphic design that relies on color to get the message across. Whether a designer uses color to turn up the volume or quietly create an effect, good use of color in design is essential. Original uses of color printed on color, color that attracts attention or improves readability, and dramatic color effects on a single paper stock - all are collected here, plus many more examples of innovative color use.

This book is good to get ideas from. However, I found, as a designer who works with non-profits as wellas regular clients, that many of the ideas presented would be cost prohibitive. The major factors a designer deals with on a daily basis with MOST clients are budget, mailing issues and costs, as well as practicality. Many of the ideas in this book look great and are terriffic concepts, but in order to pull them off, you must either have a sizeable budget that covers all phases of the production, or you must have the time and people power to take care of things like the final assembly of the item. It's a good book if you just want to get some neat ideas, but keep in mind the budget you have to work with before implementing or offering any of these kinds of ideas to clients. My opinion would be to go and look at this book in a bookstore and take notes and get ideas rather than purchase.

I recently bought this book, and I was a little concerned about it, because I didn't really know anythign about it, but at the moment i got and got the chance to read it... I was really happy because it has everything I ask for in a good graphic design book: It has the concept explanation, it has tips on money saving techniques and it also has great photographs. The only thing I could ask for is the book to have more pages so I can keep reading it over and over. I really recomend it as an "idea inspiration" book.

I was diagnosed with ADD at age 50, but exhibited classic symptoms my whole life, including academic decline when I reached the age where I needed to study (I didn't know how) rather than depend on intelligence alone.

I discovered this book after about my 5th failed attempt at college. It made not only my survival but academic excellence possible. In my view, a person is never be too old to learn - and this book helps the student achieve success and the increased self esteem that accompanies it.

This book helped me go from a 1.89 gpa to a 3.7 in college. The techniques are easy to follow and really work.

This is a textbook that would be better suited to a class of fourteen-year-olds, not to college level students. The graphics, activities, and the book in general, is not on a college level, and should be removed from the curriculum by all College professors.

This book is part of a series, "Masters of Contemporary Photography," which was an outstanding effort to highlight the work of individual photographers, providing lots of behind the scenes information on the technique and process behind the images. I own the Bert Stern volume, which I purchase sometime in the 1970s. Not having read it in years, I recently returned to it and found it absolutely incredible in its depth and insight. Re-intrigued by the "series," I came here to Amazon to look into purchasing the other volumes, which are, unfortunately, out-of-print. (Back then, I didn't buy the more volumes because, as a teenager, I couldn't afford the $4.95 cover price!) I'll report back on the others when I receive more.

How unfortunate it is that this book is out of print. Bert Stern is one of the greats of photography in the latter half of the 20th Century. This is the man that brought commercial photography to a new level, setting the standard for what could be done, and what would have to be matched by the rest of the industry. As a photographer myself, I have found his work in all forms, this book included, to be a major source of inspiration. I highly recommend this volume for anyone who can find a copy.
