    Book Description

A loosely constructed documentary underlying a flexible literary journey, Bleeding Through is an urban bricolage held together by the outline of a novel spanning 66 years. An interactive DVD-ROM, it explores the ideas of renowned cultural historian Norman Klein. At the center of the story is Molly--based on a real-life person--who may be hiding a murderer. She lives within a three-square-mile area near downtown Los Angeles, a death zone where more cinematic murders have been committed than anywhere else in the world. This neighborhood, one of the most complex ethnographic districts in the United States, is represented in Hollywood movies, urban legends, and real estate boosterism in ways that erase the lived ethnographic reality. Out of this rich blend of narratives, users must decide what to include and what to leave out so that their own version of the story will become legible--thus the reader discovers how fictions are concocted and misinformation disseminated.

4 out of 5 stars Deep and multi-faceted.......2007-07-06

What I really love about Michelle West's writing is that she gets into each character's head so well. While a lot is still clothed in mystery, the switches in perspective shift this story from just another fantasy novel into something deeper and more epic. That very epic sense is what makes HUNTER'S OATH so dense. There were times that I had to pause, take a breath, and learn to savor the story itself.

Gilliam is a Hunter Lord; Stephen is his Huntbrother. Together, they must participate in the Sacred Hunt each year in order to keep Breodanir safe and bountiful, at the risk of their own lives. But it soon becomes much more than that as Stephen falls prey to the unfathomable world of magic, demon-kin, and Gods.

I suspect what many can either find fault with or relish in HUNTER'S OATH is its ability to surround you with so much that you're not sure if you're enthralled with the world... or just confused. But if you simply let go, agree to not understand every little detail - then you can let it take you on a ride that is most definitely worth reading. I found myself incredibly attached to the world, its characters, its conflicts, which was really a surprise because I never thought I'd be thrilled to be reading about hunting and dogs. But really, it's so much more than that.

I'd say, read this if you're looking to get into something interesting but also by no means an easy, sit-back-and-enjoy type of book. You'll find yourself immersed in a world wrought with intense intrigue, conflict, and sacrifice, and a mishmash of fascinating characters (time-travelers, assasins, kings, thieves) that kept me keenly interested.

      1 out of 5 stars poor.......2007-04-09

Whether to buy or not the second volume of this duology will not be an easy decision: I wished to set this first one down just as often as I was captivated by the story.

Many basic ideas are good, even new and original, which, in this genre, is really saying something. The writer also possesses skills because she is capable of imagining and describing settings in detail and of building proficient emotional climaxes.

Many other things I find lacking.
Breodanir is a small provincial kingdom pervaded by the cult of the Hunter God, a divinity at the same time cruel and generous, which is a clever assumption, mirrored by many existing myths.
In this kingdom women and men share the power but while describing how powerful women are our author feels very self complacent which of course is clumsy: many authors have created fantasy worlds where women detain the power but have given this as obvious trusting their readers to do the social math.

This aside there are several inconsistencies throughout the novel, from clothes style through funeral rites to laws and customs, inconsistencies that I never can fail to find annoying.
Characters are not particularly well rounded and they seldom interact: Ms West seems more interested in having them snapping at each other and building her above mentioned climaxes.

Her use of the language is often repetitive and plain: her characters' voices are so often "icy" that Breodanir should should be covered by a thick ice cap.

Another problem is how she deals with the supernatural, which is duly misty but also unclear and contrived, not to mention that I am fed up with these wise people (here the seeress Evayne) who never know enough to save the world by themselves and need to manipulate the unfortunate main heroes who never seem to have the guts to insult them thouroughly.

Homosexuality is never ever mentioned or even hinted at but gay readers will probably feel a thick subtext in the symbiotic relationship between hunter and huntbrother. Another wasted opportunity.

5 out of 5 stars The first chapter in the development of an Epic.......2005-07-10

I loved this book, and in fact so far I have not been disappointed by anything that Michelle West has written. This series is supposed to stand alone (it does) from the Sun Sword series, but I read the Sun Sword series first, and now that I have read these two books, I wish I had read them first. They develop the world in a way that gives you insights into the second series that feel missing, once you know they were there. If you are planning on reading The sun Sword series, I suggest that you start here, first. Even though you supposedly don't need to.
These books are written in a 3rd person SHIFTING point of view. That means that if you tend to prefer books that stick in the POV of only a single character, you may not like these. I LOVED the technique though. Because of the shifting POV, it takes a little time to really learn the characters, but give it a chance. Once you do, you have an intimate knowledge of Several of the Key players and each one has a depth and motivation that makes you want to learn more about them all. You also get brief glimpses into the worlds of some of the minor players and villians and that adds dimensions to the story that would have otherwise been lacking.
The world is completely original, as well as, well developed and complex. This book really does set up the world and the larger plot on an epic scale, and though the story develops a great deal in this book, it really blooms in the next novel and in the Sun Sword series. The complexity of the plot and the complexity of characters may mean that the book might be less accessable to readers who prefer to have the story dumped into their laps. These are NOT card-board characters and you really need to watch them develop to understand them. If you enjoy a journey with interesting twists and turns along the way, you will definitely enjoy this book.

4 out of 5 stars The beginning of a very interesting world.......2003-11-12

This book is the beginning of one of the most interesting fantasy series being written today. The first book revolves around two young men who are "blood brothers" in a country where the rules of The Hunt govern the land. It is a story primarily about a "coming of age," and themes of responsibily, love, and death figure prominently. There are introductions of other intriguing characters, such as Evayne, who can walk through time and place, and Kallandras, a bard with some unique talents and surprising skills. These characters peak the interest, and become more "knowable" over time, as West takes great care to get inside the minds of many characters, even the villains. Definitely, the beginning of a must-read series!

      3 out of 5 stars Hunter's Oath.......2003-01-24

I couldn't put this book down! The characters were lifelike, I felt like I got to know them and the story was just great in its creativity. West has an amazing eye for detail. However, the reason I only decided it was worth 3 stars, was because West's editor, apparently, doensn't have an eye for detail. Half of the time, there would be a description of a character or scene without an explanation of what was actually happening. It's not the author's fault -- an extensive read-through would have solved this problem. (Also, I didn't realize it had a sequel and was panicked when it just ended without really ending!) Even so, if you're interested in fantasy, I'd reccommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Noir 1920's SF with women's rights thrown in.......2006-01-04

In Blood and Roses, Jayne Taylor spent three years as a noncombatant running relief supplies to hospitals and refugees in the European theater. During that time she killed a man, rescued a novice who later became her friend and the nanny to the four children she adopted after the war. Now it's 1920 and Jayne and her family are returning to the US to make a life for themselves Jayne sees the man she killed on the wharf in New York. But perhaps that's just travel weariness. The main problem Jayne has is finding a job to support her family--lady jobs don't pay enough. As a truck driver for the mob running booze she can feed and clothe them but then a woman doing a man's job never has an easy time of it.

Next thing she knows, a mob driver on another route has an illness similar to the one she saw in Europe and her partner on the truck might just be more than he seems. Before she knows what's going on, Jayne finds herself forced to work for the pre-Federal Bureau of Investigation (minus pay of course), and in a flying saucer on the way to Japan trying to stop the development of a weapon of mass destruction. The investigator who forced her to work with him won't listen to her or tell her anything and she thinks she knows more than he does about what he's dealing with based on what she saw during the war.

There's a definite feeling of the '20s going on here. There's the story which is interesting enough in its own right but also the subtext of a woman trying to make ends meet in a world that thinks she's better as a decorative accessory on a man's arm. This is the decade that saw a lot of big changes in women's rights and while this doesn't deal with the issues of the vote it does deal with the everyday issues of trying to survive.

Blood and Roses.is an interesting blend of the old hard-boiled detective fiction and gee whiz science fiction. It's a lot of fun in a strange off kilter way.

5 out of 5 stars Each of Ann Zeddies books is better than the last.......2005-12-20

Each of Ann Zeddies books is better than the last

Typhon stories that she wrote under the name, Toni Anzetti, are great. Definitely worth reading at least once. I'm glad she's started using her own name (see Steel Helix)... makes it easier to find her stuff.

I haven't read the Deathgift books, but I plan to.

          Blood And Roses is excellent.

The characters have depth. The scenes and action are real. Ms. Zeddies is really an excellent story teller.

Many science fiction heroines are portrayed as over-the-top superwomen... tougher & meaner than any men. It's like the authors, in trying to overcome the 'weak woman' stereotype go too far and end up with characters that are cliche.

Jayne Taylor is nothing like that. She's an interesting and courageous individual who just happens to be a woman. She's intelligent, resourceful, and just won't give up. Zeddies makes Jane alive.

While this is a science fiction story, I think that people who aren't generally into sf would like it. It's just an excellent story, written well. It would be an excellent story even if the science fiction aspects were removed... although they do add a lot.

I hope that Ms. Zeddies writes more Jayne Taylor novels, soon!

5 out of 5 stars Place Lara Croft in the War of the worlds .......2005-11-22

After spending three years in France as a relief worker, Jayne Taylor goes one step beyond her usual heroics when she kills a German soldier who is holding Sister Madeline hostage. Madeline looks like she is suffering from radiation poisoning but she receives medical attention and recovers. When the war ends Jayne adopts five war orphans and with Madeline brings them home to America. Needing to earn some money she convinces a mobster to let her drive the truck carrying liquor during prohibition. On her first run, she and another end up in a flying ship heading towards Japan.

They land on Sado Island where they become separated. Carmeron is held prisoner by sentient insects that look like monsters while Jayne is in the same underground chamber of caves trying to find Cameron with the help of a mysterious stranger who knows more than he should about the bugs and their plans. The Japanese warlord Noriyama wants to use the same substance that the alien prisoners are mining to make a weapon that will give the Japanese dominance in world affairs. Jayne, Cameron and the mysterious stranger will do everything in their power to stop them.

Combine the action of a Lara Croft movie with the premise of H.G. Wells book War of the worlds and readers will have some idea what BLOOD AND ROSES is all about. Jayne is a modern day heroine who is living in the 1920's doing things that are usually the province of men including saving the world. The audience will like Jayne for her loyalty, her humanity, passion and bravery but they will find themselves paying attention to the mysterious stranger and hope he and Jayne will have more adventures in future books. The premise of this tale would make a fantastic movie.

            Book Description

The concept of "scripture" as written religious text is reexamined in this close analysis of the traditions of oral use of the sacred writings of religions around the world. Pointing out the central importance of the oral and aural experience of religious texts in the life of religious communities of both Eastern and Western cultures, William Graham asserts the need for a new perspective on how scripture has been appropriated and used by the vast majority of all people who have been religious, most of whom could neither read nor write.

Tuna sandwich on toasted cheese bread, hot fudge over vanilla ice cream (and the agony of deciding whether I should choose hot butterscotch), out on a teenage date with my Irish boyfriend. Schrafft's has special memories for so many of us. I discovered this when I presented several friends with the wonderful Christmas gift of "When Everybody Ate at Schrafft's." Everybody loves to receive this treasure.

For nearly eighty years Schrafft's was the place to eat in cities around the country: it took the products of a local Boston chocolatier named Schrafft and translated it to comfort food restaurants around the country. Once over fifty such venues peppered just the New York area. From Andy Warhold's wild contribution to the effort to private groups who used the stores, the varied and colorful history of Schrafft's lively venues are fantastic. And don't forget the recipes: they're included and are a large part of what made it a notable venue.

                    Product Description

This study covers the latent demand outlook for wood household den, family room, library, and living room cabinets, desks, bookcases, bookshelves, credenzas, and wall units excluding custom units sold at retail directly to the customer across the states, union territories and cities of India. Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 5,000 cities in India. For each city in question, the percent share the city is of it’s state or union territory and of India as a whole is reported. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city vis-à-vis others. This statistical approach can prove very useful to distribution and/or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each state or union territory and city, latent demand estimates are created for wood household den, family room, library, and living room cabinets, desks, bookcases, bookshelves, credenzas, and wall units excluding custom units sold at retail directly to the customer. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

                        Product Description

This study covers the latent demand outlook for wood household den, family room, library, and living room cabinets, desks, bookcases, bookshelves, credenzas, and wall units excluding custom units sold at retail directly to the customer across the regions of Greater China, including provinces, autonomous regions (Guangxi, Nei Mongol, Ningxia, Xinjiang, Xizang - Tibet), municipalities (Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, and Tianjin), special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau), and Taiwan (all hereafter referred to as “regions”). Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,100 cities in Greater China. For each major city in question, the percent share the city is of the region and of Greater China is reported. Each major city is defined as an area of “economic population”, as opposed to the demographic population within a legal geographic boundary. For many cities, the economic population is much larger that the population within the city limits; this is especially true for the cities of the Western regions. For the coastal regions, cities which are close to other major cities or which represent, by themselves, a high percent of the regional population, actual city-level population is closer to the economic population (e.g. in Beijing). Based on this “economic” definition of population, comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city’s marketing and distribution value vis-à-vis others. This exercise is quite useful for persons setting up distribution centers or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each region and city of influence, latent demand estimates are created for wood household den, family room, library, and living room cabinets, desks, bookcases, bookshelves, credenzas, and wall units excluding custom units sold at retail directly to the customer. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. While this bookcase is considered to be a beginning level project, this probably should not be your first woodworking project. Almost all of the joints are designed to be simple in construction, but very strong. There are seventeen boards to dimension. There are sixtey steps to construction. The face frame is designed to add strenth and allow fitting for the shell without exposing potential errors. This plan is going to take us step by step through the entire process of building a simple bookcase whether you use a Shopsmith MARK V adn a few of its accessories or individual stationary power tools, you will find that this is a project in which the whole family can participate and be proud of for years. YOu will be learning basic cabinet and case makeing fundamentals in the steps of this project. You will see why certain basic understandings yield very important results. I was lucky and found this book on Ebay, knowing much about it I bought it because the cover looked very interesting. To my surprise I eneded up loving this book and I wish there were more like this and a continuation on this topic. So if your lucky to find this book used BUY IT

This book will help really break down texturing to get photo real looking 3D results!

BILL FLEMING IF YOUR OUT THERE, YOU REALLY NEED TO WRITE MORE BOOKS, YOU DO A GREAT JOB!

5 out of 5 stars GET IT, YOUR MODELS WILL THANK YOU!.......2003-06-24

This is a fantastic book for getting you started with realistic skin texturing. Over the years, I've collected numerous books on the fine art of skin texturing. This is one of the finest and complete book around. Though I do combine this with some other techniques, this book brought a lot to the table. It also has a great section on eyes! The book is easy to follow with tons of big pictures with short paragraphs. My biggest let down was the fact that they were going to come out with a book on clothing painting. Unfourtunatally, it was cancelled.

1 out of 5 stars Bill does indeed strike again. Much to buyers regrets.......2003-02-02

What a waste of money. It's barely worth the paper it is written on.

There are better and more comprehensive tutorials on the web for free than the nonsense printed here.

Fair warning, save your money, don't be "Fleminged".

5 out of 5 stars Realistic texturing class for the rest of us.......2002-11-28

Where was this book, when I needed it for my thesis. lol

The whole book is a do-it-yourself class on its own. The steps are laid out very clearly, how you use photoshop for doing textures. I really like the how the book included the character files in obj, dxf, c3d, lwo and 3ds. So that anyone could view the model in any program they use. The book covers the face, the eyes, the gums, the tongue and the teeth in excellent detail. I went throught the book twice with every page being extremely helpful.

What did this book do for me as a Maya user, it broke me away from methods I had learned at RIT and suggested more simpler ones without making bumpmaps in the hypershade. Now you can do it all in one texture, and it looks amazing.

This book has been a great edition to my 3D collection. I look forward to more of his work in the future. Whats volume 2 going to be about?

5 out of 5 stars finally a book that covers organic textures step by step.......2002-09-01

With a million and one books on 3D model creation its good to finally see one that covers the other half of the equation -textures!

Bill takes you step by step through the process of texturing his Freaky Frank model, unravelling the mystery of organic texture creation with ease.

All required files are included (unlike the first print release)
although I found it a little strange that the cover photo was created in Deep Paint, while the tutorials use Photoshop and the CD includes a demo copy of BodyPaint. Not that it matters I suppose as any paint program can be used with the book provided you have a basic understanding of your software.

Its a great read and offers lots of hints and tips for realistic textures. I look forward to volume two of this unique series.

                                    Book Description

Picking up a package dropped by a lady on a street corner in San Francisco and meeting a silent spiritual master a year later in India changed the course of the author's life. Dancing the Beguine, a spiritual adventure story, retraces his erratic and errant path to and from those defining moments.

5 out of 5 stars The spiritual path is no bed of roses.......2000-09-15

I just finished this book after ordering it from Amazon.com and i thought it was magnificent.I have been a Meher Baba follower for over 3 years and identified with how the "thief of hearts" can affect our live's.This book is clearly written and offer's one man's vicissitudes on the spiritual path.Although Gary's Master is Avatar Meher Baba, all people who show an interest in spirituality will benefit from this book.I especially admire Gary for being so honest regarding his character weaknesses. The book had a healing effect for me in that it showed i am not unique in my own shortcoming's.Gary's story touched me in that it showed how as human beings we all have to go through some painful situations, issues, relationships, etc. to learn from to become better people. It also confirmed the fact that instant gratification causes long term pain.Gary has come out on the other side learning from his mistake's and appreciating life more.Meher Baba has been called "The Awakener".He make's us more aware of our shortcomings wich can often be a very uncomfortable process.Yet this book relates how Meher Baba is the embodiment of Compassion, Grace, and love.Meher Baba means "Compassionate Father" and this book helps explain why. I highly recommend this book to all spiritual seekers.
