Not that great.......2007-06-13

I really liked Tanya Huff's Heart of Valor and Summon the Keeper series, and Wizard of the Grove as well, though I haven't really gotten into the Blood Books. But this collection of her earlier short stories just isn't that great, pretty unremarkable and forgettable. I'm not sure if I regret buying it, but I'm going to donate it to the local library. If you can read it for free it's not that bad.

This is quite a list of stories.

I usually don't go back and re-read but this book I did. One of the stories is absolutely precious. I would love to see it made into a book.

Here fill in stories are great too. I don't think anyone of the stories deserves less then 4 stars

Great Short Story Collection!.......2002-03-02

So far, I haven't read a book by Tanya Huff that I haven't enjoyed, and this collection is no exception. It contains 15 of her short stories, and there's not a bad one in the bunch. Best of all, it contains four short stories involving her Blood series characters Vicki Nelson, Michael Celluci and Henry Fitzroy - always a pleasure to read.

"The Chase Is On" is a space opera, whose characters deserve a book of their own. "Underground" tells the story of what may exist in the Toronto subway system. "I'll Be Home For Christmas" is about a mother, her young daughter, and the inheritance that is much more than it appears to be. "Shin Li-Ung" is a story about Chinese tradition, gangs, and unexpected protection. "First Love, Last Love" is the ultimate tale of boys and their toys. "Word of Honor" tells of a woman who discovers her own honor while carrying out a quest for someone else. "The Harder They Fall" is about what happens when fairy tales turn real. "A Debt Unpaid" is a mining story involving personal choices and personal ghosts. "February Thaw" takes the story of Demeter, Persephone, and Hades and turns them into a modern-day dysfunctional family. "Symbols Are A Percussion Instrument" involves an cynic and a pack of tarot cards. "A Midsummer Night's Dream Team" takes High Elves and crosses them with the Olympics. And then "This Town Ain't Big Enough", What Manner of Man", "The Cards Also Say" and "The Vengeful Spirit of Lake Nepeakea" all continue the story of Vicki Nelson (ex-cop, now a vampire PI), her lover Detective-Sargeant Michael Celluci, and Henry Fitzroy (romantic novelist, vampire, and bastard son of King Henry VIII of England).

If you've never read Ms. Huff, this is a great introduction to her writing. And if you're a fan, then this is icing on the cake.

Magic, Space Opera, Horror and more!.......2000-02-18

What Ho, Magic! is the first of what is hopefully several collections of short stories by Tanya Huff. There are stories of quiet, haunting horror; stories of magic and of mystery; and even a wonderfully tongue-in-cheek space opera story. This collection shows the breadth of Huff's skills, and she proves that she is quite capable of delivering a mystery with a private detective turned vampire, or an attack of a foot-and-a-half long dragon, or a tale of ghosts in the subway that will incite feelings of slight claustrophobic for a day or two.

Her characters are strong and entirely human; well, the vampire *was* a human at one point. In the story "Shing Li-Ung," Huff tells a tale of a sister and brother finding their heritage in the melting pot of cultures in modern Toronto. "The Chase is On" tells us of a starship captain, most emphatically *not* a smuggler, but she does occasionally stray on the odd side of the law. Huff even brings magic into the sports arena with the delightful and thought-provoking "A Midsummer Night's Dream Team." High Elves playing basketball? Tolkien would have conniptions--or laugh his head off in approval.

Awesome!.......2000-01-16

If you never read a Tanya Huff book this is the one to start with. The stories are amazing in their diversity! I have read just about every Huff book (except one that is out of stock). All her books are awesome! I love the Blood books, the Last Wizard, and the Quartered books. It amazes me that she has such an imagination.

This book just shows there doesn't seem to be anything she can't write about.

fragmented -- not a stand alone book.......2005-08-09

"Dark Nadir" continues the ongoing saga of several groups of aliens -- humans, one bug-like, two cat-like, etc. This book is fragmented into some two dozen different point of view plotlines, all of which presume that the reader has read (and remembers clearly) the previous books. Near as I could tell, most of these numerous plotlines had very little in common with each other. Readers who (like me) have a hazy memory of "yeah I read that other book" will be completely lost.

Look, I really enjoyed Norman's first book in this series -- it was an outstanding novel. Before you purchase this book, I highly recommend you go back to that first book and work your way through the series.

Why The Pain?.......2003-02-22

I've just finished a marathon reading of the first six books in Lisanne Norman's Sholan Alliance series and have only one question for her: Why did you have to keep the main characters in so much pain?
The storyline is good, the writing is good, the characters are good, just why could there not have been more happiness throughout the series? I am well aware of the need for tension/conflict, etc., and so forth in any good work of fiction, it is just that I find my overall impression of the series as so depressing that, at this time, I'm not sure if I want to read the next one. I don't think I really want to know how Norman can hurt the characters even more.

A Struggle of Wills.......2003-01-25

Dark Nadir is the fifth novel in the Sholan Alliance series, following Razor's Edge. In the previous volume, Captain Tirak of the U'Churian ship, the Rryuk's Profit, has encountered a mixed leska pair at the Chemerian home world. The two had been kidnapped by the Valtegans, rescued by the Chemerians, and then refused permission to leave Chemeria. Carrie and Kusac have ejected the abrasive leader of the archaeology team from their estate at the request of the Touibans, another species in the Sholan Alliance.

Later, Carrie, Kusac, Kaid and their team have have infiltrated the spaceport on Jalna in the Chemerian ship Hkariyashi and have rescued most of the Keissans and Sholans. However, Carrie has been badly wounded and both Carrie and Kusac have been placed in cyro pods on the Rryuk's Profit. Then the Hkariyashi and the Profit departed for the Chemerian home world, leaving the spaceport in the hands of their Jalnian ally, Lord Tarolyn.

On Shola, General Kezule has escaped in order to force Carrie and Kusac to return him to his own time. He has killed Zhyaf during the escape, causing Mara to start to die with her leska partner; Vanna, however, has managed to save Mara's life by transferring the leska link to Josh. Esken has been struck down with a heart seizure and has resigned as Master of the Telepaths Guild; Sorli has been selected to replace him.

In this novel, the Sholan ship Rhijissoh travels to Jalna to institute first contact negotiations. Onboard the Rryuk's Profit, Kaid meets the ship's navigators, a Carraban sept, for the first time. Kaid and Tirak exchange information and determine that both the Sholan Alliance and the Free Traders have been greatly deceived by the Chemerians. Then, the Profit is attacked by a Valtegan ship M,ijikk, which is commanded by the former Overlord of Keiss, M'ezozakk. Since this former Overlord had tortured and killed Carrie's twin sister, Eloise, Kaid ejects both cyro pods to protect Carrie and Kuzac from the Valtegans.

This novel expands the number of species directly involved in the action. Some have been previously mentioned as part of the Sholan Alliance and others are part of the newly discovered Free Traders. The novel also introduces a new set of Valtegans, the Primes.

I have to admit that I am becoming confused over the personal and species names, not to mention the numerous ships. I can always figure it out after a while, but it distracts from the story. Maybe Norman could add an appendix or two for us memory challenged types.

Recommended for all Norman fans and anyone who enjoys tales of personal and interpersonal development in a SF setting.

This is so good it is a must read!.......2000-10-12

Okay this is a book in the series... whether you start with the first book or start with this one you won't be disappointed! This book is a crowning achievement... surpassing my greatest expectation of her works. I absolutely loved this book and think it is among her best. The plot twists were great. I read the whole book without wanting to put it down. I am sure you'll be struck in a similar way!

Kinky - in every sense of the word.......2000-04-17

Sex, sex, and more sex! What more could you want in a book? Oh, right...the story...it was a really good one, and I'm just waiting to see what else is going to happen to Carrie, Kusac, Kaid, and the rest of the gang. The thought that Brynne could be a visionary as revered as Kaid is really interesting, accompanied by the fact that Brynne has now life-bonded with Keeza. Right now I'm thinking "June 2000...hurry up, I want the next book!"

Jeanne Guyon's autobiography alone is priceless, so you cannot go wrong with buying the book. Within her biography are many instances which she explains her deep understanding of Christian life; however, this time it is in the context of her own specific living situations. It is fascinating to read the autobiography after being spellbound (but good spells) by her most famous book, "Experiencing the Depths of Jesus Christ". Also within this compilation is a very helpful spiritual guide called "The Way to God". It offers a step-by-step record of the various states of growth of the Christian life. This is a great compilation.

outside of the Holy Scriptures...the best.......2007-07-09

The Way of Jesus is humility, vulnerability and awareness of the things of the Spirit. Michael Molinos cuts through the trendy capitalist/Western thinking and opens the reader up to the transcendence of God and the devastation of Man's fall.
There are few materials out there that speak of these matters. Most "Christ-centered" resources are about how to feel better about oneself. This book is pointing towards The Way (for disciples who want Truth) for the Christ-centered model of living...

Am Disappointed.......2001-03-22

I read "Spiritual Torrents" after reading Guyons autobiography, which had NOT been edited by Gene Edwards and was disappointed by what editing or "modernizing" had done to the text. I will now look for the original text or earlier translations.

To translate "Soul" with "Christian" or "devotee" is a faux pax which I find not only ignorant but also irresponsible . The editing lost much of Guyon's deeply moving spirituality in the process and watered it down. Though I appreciate the republishing, I wish Mr. Edwards had left the text alone and allow the readers be moved by the Spirit according to HIs desire.

The Soul is the Soul and not Christian! It may when on a spiritual journey come to know Christ. The text as written by Guyon is lovingly fruitful for all religious seekers, though in this editing it feels like it turned into the coin the moneychangers made suitable for the temple's purposes. But whose temple?

I hope when you read this review you will still be glad to hear and know about Guyon. But look for the earlier translations!

if you've read any of Guyon's other works, particularly her autobigraphy, and found that you have experienced anything similar to what she describes, then this is a great book to read. i found in it the only accurate description of the difficulties and pains of the deserts the God brings a surrendered Christian through. it was a comfort to me during the most difficult time in my spiritual walk, even more then her autobiography or "experiencing the depths of Jesus Christ." if you know what it is like to feel that God has left you or even that He is slaying you, read this book. if not, it will be difficult for you to understand or accept what she describes.

Life from the past.......2007-06-14

This book was written by my Grandmother when she was in her 80's. It has a lot of history in it as well as "occult". My Grandmother was psychic. She tells of her life long experience with the paranormal in an everyday normal way. Here is a autobiography type book that gives you a view of the life of a young girl who grew up in mining towns in the early 1920's. "Living with my Little Voice" is a good look into her life living with an extra perception of things.
My Grandmother has since passed on. Whether to the afterlife she believed in or the one that I believe, I cann't say. But I do believe you will enjoy reading this book.
