3 out of 5 stars 3.4 on a scale of 1 to 5, Well Written but Dated.......2003-08-07

"Professor Romeo" is an intelligent, thoughtful look at sexual harassment in a university (Harvard) setting.
"Professor Romeo" is the nickname that has been given to Jacob Barker over the years at Harvard. Once a rising star, he has somehow never fulfilled his early promise in academia. However, he has fulfilled as his promise as a roue.
The book begins with Jacob being informed that a committee is examining sexual harassments allegations against him. The time is the late 80's when sexual harassment is just started being taken seriously.
The book then reviews Jacob's conquests (through his eyes) over the years: a beautiful PhD anthropology candidate who becomes his embittered wife (and later ex-wife), an anorexic student, a rising professor (who later becomes the Dean investigating the complaints against him), a poor little rich girl and so on. From Jacob's vantage point, all of these encounters were mutual, even though he was the one with power. Plus, in those days, no one had ever heard of sexual harassment.
Bernays does an excellent job of coloring her story with grey shades. She shows how such a situation is not necessarily black or white: yet that is exactly how it is (or was) portrayed in the late 1980's. She also does an outstanding job of portraying the vicious vipers that exist in university settings.
However, the book is dated. Anita Hill, Bill Clinton et al. had yet to happen-in some books, this would not matter. But this book is so tied to the times that it does make a difference.
I would recommend this book to those individuals who want a well written fictional account of the atmosphere surrounding sexual harassment in the late 1980's. In addition, Bernays' book was a roman a clef about Harvard at the time: some people may want to spot their favorite (or least) professor and students.

        Book Description

Kharl is the best cooper in Brysta, one of the major cities in Nordla, and his life has been as ordered and dependable as his barrels. His trouble begins when he saves a neighbor's daughter from the violent advances of two upper-class men. Then he rescues an actual rape victim he finds unconscious in an alley, a blackstaffer -- a young expatriate mage -- from Recluce, and that makes his wife very uneasy. The culprit in both cases turns out to have been Egen, the cruel and corrupt son of the local ruler. When the blackstaffer is mysteriously murdered in Kharl's cooperage, Kharl is jailed, tried, and flogged, and in a shocking turnaround released--and his consort executed for the murder, which she did not commit. Egen again. Kharl ends up on the run, with just a handful of coins and a few clothes, but he also takes the slain woman's black staff and her book, The Basis of Order, which explains the principles of its power. The diligent cooper is about to learn a new, very different skill.Wellspring of Chaos is the twelfth book in the Recluce Saga and takes place roughly 60 years after the close of The Order War (Recluce #4). It is Modesitt at the top of his form, returning to his most famous fantasy world, yet does not require previous knowledge of Recluce to be enjoyed. It's publication is sure to be one of the fantasy milestones of the year.

Kharl is a master barrel maker. This is good for those that like beer, etc. However he intervenes more than once in the games of rape and violence of some of the local lordlings.

They aim to get rid of him, but frame his girlfriend for murder and have her executed. He goes off aimlessly wandering with the staff of the murdered girl and develops into another order master.

5 out of 5 stars Review of "Wellspring of Chaos".......2007-05-13

Like all books by L.E. Modesitt, Jr., this one is gripping. It kept me up *way* past my bedtime too many nights. Modesitt knows how to tell a story, and keep you on the edge of your chair -- not so much suspense, as drama. He really knows how to write and how to make a story work. When you look forward to getting finished with what you have to do so that you can get back to reading the book, you know it is a darn good book. But, I find all his books like that. Perhaps his style of writing just resonates with my interests, but I'm certain that I am not the only one. The "conclusion" of the "Wellspring of Chaos" story is his book "Ordermaster." THAT book is responsible for a lot of lost sleep because I could not put it down.

I believe that I have read every Fantasy Novel Modesitt has written. I'm not such a fan of his Science Fiction, but few if any can write fantsy as well. Only Mercedes Lackey's books are as gripping as Modesitt, but she has a completely different style. (Her books make you sweat and slide *off* the edge of your chair.)

I would recommend "Wellspring of Chaos" AND "Ordermaster" to anyone who likes fantasy fiction -- especially if they have read any of the previous books in the Saga of Recluce series.

4 out of 5 stars Still a good series after many books.......2006-08-11

Kharl is a cooper - the finest in Brysta. He works hard at his craft, his family, and his integrity. Kharl takes in a blackstaffer, from Recluse, who's been beaten and abused and is, later, mysteriously murdered. The blame is placed on Kharl. After jail and a trial, his consort is found to be guilty and is hanged. His sons desert him. His business dries up. He has few friends. But these friends rally him, in the nick of time, to flee the cooperage and the corrupt rulers of Brysta. His path takes him from the streets, begging for coppers, to escape on an ocean vessel and to other lands. Along the way, he discovers the order magic of the black staff and his growing abilities to fight chaos in the world.

L.E. Modesitt is the author of the Recluse fantasy series. The series is thirteen novels, so far, with Wellspring of Chaos the twelfth in written order and tenth in chronological order of the world of the Recluse series. Ordermaster, is the sequel to Wellspring.

He writes of two sides to magic - order and chaos.

Order is the magic that is related to structure and is mostly useful in knowledge and defense. Order mages are known as black mages.

Chaos magic is white and has explosive power. Chaos mages are flamboyant and often visibly powerful.

Modesitt has written other fantasy novels, including the Spellsong and Corean Chronicles series'. He has also written science fiction series', including The Forever Hero, The Ecolitan Institute, Timegod's World, and Ghosts.

Wellspring of Chaos is very appealing in that here is a man who is hard-working, gifted, and cares for the disadvantaged. He quickly loses everything. He is Job. When other men fold, Kharl befriends a continuum of people: street urchins, businessmen, and a ship captain. He is able to get away from the evil that threatens him and adapt to come back to fight another day. It is a story of strength and of doing good in a world that is corrupt.

Kharl revisits other places in the world that Modesitt has written about in earlier books in the Recluse series. It is a nostalgia of sorts, taking the reader back to places of wonder and magic...and evil.

There are a couple of odd tendencies that Modesitt has in this series. One is that he often writes in side effects (i.e., hssst, thrap, or crrruuuummp). It gets the point across but can be somewhat disorienting. The other is his use of units of measure. Some, I'm quite fond of, like "kay" for a long unit of length, similar to the kilometer or click. Others were quite deceiving, like the "glass", which is a unit of time, like and hour. The "glass" could easily be lost on the reader if the context is not strong. In fact, I didn't realize what a "glass" was until about halfway through Wellspring. I've yet to read any of his other series' so I don't know if these are also present in them.

I would recommend the Wellspring of Chaos (and the entire Recluse series) to lovers of fantasy, certainly, but to anyone who loves a good hero story. Modesitt focuses on one, main character, taking the reader from small beginnings through trials and hardships, and eventually to heroic bravery...usually at a price.

5 out of 5 stars Another Excellent Recluse Novel.......2006-06-08

To be honest, I don't know that I could ever give this author anything less that 5 stars. The Saga of Recluse has captivated me like no other fantasy setting out there. Modesitt has created a world with endless possiblities and continues in The Wellspring of Chaos. This novel stands out from all the others for several reasons. First, the story is set in a different part of the world. Second, the main character, Karl the cooper, is middle-aged - not a youth. Third and foremost, Karl has a completely different attitude from all previous heroes.

Karl stands out in that he is not frustrated by his lack of knowledge. Of every main character, Karl starts out with less information about order, chaos, and how to use them. Unlike the other novels, Karl shows patience in his growth and values the little tidbits of information he gleans along the way. STill, the same mechanics of the Saga of Recluse are still here. Karl sees a problem and he fixes it - patiently. In fact the detail and patience each main character has shown throughout this saga is what ultimately draws me back to this fantasy again and again.

4 out of 5 stars Superb storytelling based on gripping characterisation.......2005-11-10

Modesitt Jr's `Wellspring of Chaos' takes us to Nordla, thence to the town of Brysta to the home of a middle aged cooper named Kharl whose aptitude for woodcraft is quietly pushed along in his cooperage. He suffers from all the usual problems of a well settled man, teenage sons with issues, a wife pushing him along to improve the business, the daily struggle of providing for his family. As a periodical so aptly indicates on the jacket, there are no youthful "callow youngsters who grow into heroes" just a hard-working man who suffers the cruelest of fates when he decides to help a young female Recluce blackstaffer who is beaten and left for dead on his workstep.
The social consequences of his individual kindness means his charge is murdered under cover of an arson, his sons leave him, his wife is arbitrarily executed by the actions of a prideful and callous young nobleman, his cooperage is attacked and then he is taxed out of his home and his place in society is irrevocably destroyed. Force to flee and hide in the town's gutters, he befriends another runaway, Jeka, and his patient, logical approach begins to reveal a hidden talent for order. With Jelendra's staff (the dead mage from Recluce) and her `The Basis for Order' book he kills a white mage who is preying on the youth of Brysta to gain new life and finds himself fleeing to the sea and taking a position as second carpenter on the Seastag under captain Hagen. After proving himself a capable fighter and using the tentative beginnings of his order power to assist the ship he finds himself involved in a political and real battle to save Lord Ghrant's lands. His single handed destruction of a powerful mage and the opposing lord elevates his status far beyond that of a cooper and hands him a minor landholding.
Clearly the beginning of at least a two novel story about Kharl, Modesitt again effortlessly proves that he can create a fantasy tale of true magic around a very ordinary character in much the same way he has done with the Corean Chronicles. It is the mark of an excellent storyteller that you can get eighty odd pages into a novel, pause and realise all you've really done is learn about making barrels and the trade of said barrels, but be throughly entertained. A clear case of superb characterisation removing the need for quick fix plots that lurch from one big explosion to another to keep reader attention because the characters themselves engender no empathy at all. For any fan of the fantasy genre Modesitt is in a very different league to many others simply because of his style. Character is more important than plot, narrative is tightly drawn and captivating and the novels are strangely gripping.
Luckily, Modesitt is a prolific author so there's never any lack of material to read.

3 out of 5 stars Oh, what is it?.......2002-07-25

I finished OH NO IT ISN'T! a few days ago, but I'm still not quite sure what to make of it. It's a fun romp that spends the first hundred pages being absolutely not a romp. It's a fantastical, farcical fantasy that tacks on a bizarrely scientific ending. It's concerned with establishing a foundation to the (then) new series of Benny Adventures while also attempting to maintain a standalone tale. In short, it's doing quite a lot of different things almost at once. I found it to be enjoyable, but the further into the story I delved, the more restless I became.

The only major problem I found with OH NO IT ISN'T! is that it drags, quite heavily in parts. It's trying to be light and frothy, but it never seemed to be quite as light as it wants to be. A secondary (and mostly serious) subplot keeps pulling the action out of fluffville and grounding the entire book so that it never goes quite as far as it could have. Frivolity is quite a difficult concept to successfully pull off, and I don't think that Paul Cornell totally succeeded. Certainly there are some remarkably fun pieces, and I was entertained throughout much of the book. But too much lightheartedness can become tedious, and I found the secondary plot to be mostly distracting. There are times when the story is neither one thing nor the other. Had Paul Magrs written this same story he probably would have left out most of the real world portions (including the shaky ending) and moved the plot along faster. And I probably would have enjoyed that version more than this one.

Now, I'm quite willing to concede the possibility that I had less than ideal reading conditions here. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I was unable to read the story in the larger chunks that it was probably best suited for. Breaking it down into smaller pieces and reading only short sections a day can only have hurt this overall experience. While initially I had been very enthusiastic about the story, pulling the book out for the third day of Benny still locked in panto-land with no clue as to how to escape began to require more and more effort on my part. The longer the panto scenes went on, the less desire I felt to pick up the book again. Nothing seemed to be happening other than pop culture references and word plays. Obviously, that's the nature of the medium here, but while an actual panto performance doesn't go on for a terribly long amount of time, the same thing in a book requires a greater investment of time from the audience. The jokes and the puns do manage to liven those sections, but there were many moments where it felt like an uphill battle.

OH NO IT ISN'T! can be quite a lot of fun, if you're in the mood for an odd sort of romp through panto-land. Many of the jokes are devastatingly funny, and there are numerous pop culture references to keep one amused, from the Marx Brothers to Pulp. As a light and frothy adventurous frolic, it mostly works. Had the plot moved a bit faster, I probably wouldn't have ended up being as bored by the middle section, but perhaps looking for a quick storyline in a panto is a fruitless task. On the other hand, it's quite possible that panto is just one of those genres that doesn't translate well to the novel format.

3 out of 5 stars Is it or isn't it?.......2001-08-29

An amusing story, something like a cross between Alan Dean Foster's Spellsinger and Douglas Adams' Hitchhhiker's Guide series, and likely to appeal to fans of these series. Bernice and her cat, arguably the two main characters, were engaging characters that were fun to read about. A lot of cliches from classic tales are used here in twisted and surprising ways. A very funny story.
But there were enough problems to keep me from giving it a higher rating than I did. There were too many other characters that were interesting but inadequately developed. The plot was rather chaotic, taking turns seemingly at random. It struck me as the sort of story that could have been developed from one of those creativity exercises where you are given several unusual, diverse objects or characters, and you are supposed to conjure up a story that uses all of them.
You could certainly do worse than to read Paul Cornell's Oh No, It Isn't.

5 out of 5 stars Oh No It Isn't audio recording.......2000-08-24

It has been a long time sinse I've listened to such a fully book. Being self conscious, it takes a lot to get me to laugh out loud at work, but this one did it. I even found I had to stop my data entry to listen, and hoped I wasn't overheard. This is definately a book I will read and listen to again and again. I also will lend it to all my friends, or recommend it for them to buy.

              5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......1999-06-20

Paul Cornell is definitely in my top three of the best New Adventure authors.

What a brilliantly funny way to start of the new New Adventures. I absolutely adored a speaking Wolsey!

Keep up the great work, Mr. Cornell.

              Book Description

A powerful truth-in-myth about the women of the Sisterhood of the Sun who have carried the light codes of consciousness for the coming Golden Age. The book has been a source of deep healing for the wounded feminine spirit - a call to all women to learn from the powerful archetypes it portrays.

This series of twelve stories includes the lives of Mary Magdalen, Lilith, Isis, Morgaine, and a young woman, Isabel, whose tragic life ends in the fires of the Inquisition. The loss of the Codes of Light with her death is offset by their presence in the lives of the Priestesses of the Sun in the Inca lineage. An activating account of the enduring feminine spirit, The Lineage of the Codes of Light is a must-read for all conscious women and men.

"This book is fiction...unless, of course it isn't!" If youre called to this book in the first place then you're definitely open and aware of certain key truths already. On the path so to speak. The contents of the pages in this book are designed to open and awaken powerful truths within us. I recommend this book for both Women and Men. But this is the story of the sacred feminine and the unbroken lineage of women who have held the light codes for humanity since zep-tepi (the begining of the new star seeding on this planet). I've done extensive research on all topics this book touches on and I have never come across such a powerful "truth-in-myth" book that ties all intuitively discerned truths together.

              3 out of 5 stars hmmmm!?.......2005-12-29

The quote, "This book is fiction, unless it isn't..." is laughable because this book is very definitely fiction. This is a very thinnly veiled attempt to pass off a colletion of, self-prescribed "Channelings" as truth, and while there most certainly is truth in this book, it is still fiction. I must say that these singular tales are interesting even if untrue and there is a quality of activation within them that is uplifting. Not a waste of my time at all.

3 out of 5 stars An important Prequel.......2005-09-18

Rating this book with stars (appropriate, given the subject matter) is difficult as the rating depends on who is reading it and why.

As literature, 3 stars, as it is not particularly well written, although it becomes somewhat better as the book progresses. It also covers ground that is already well known and explored within the metaphysical community.

However, for someone unfamiliar with the concepts, it is a good basic introduction, so 4 stars.

I recommend the book as it will prepare the reader for the more complex and much better written companion book, Brotherhood of the Magi, which I rate at 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Are you ready for this?.......2005-03-05

I am awed at Jessie Ayani's skill in telling the story of the Sisterhood and imbuing it with such potent energy. I may be one of the pickiest people in the world when it comes to writing, and even the need for better editing in this book couldn't dampen the pure magic of it for me. I read this book slowly, rationing it so that I could extract the most out of it. I read most of it while exercising, and that really seemed to help me easily integrate the energy shifts this powerful book catalyzes.

Truly, if you are meant to read this book, and are ready for it, you will be drawn into it. You will feel new openings within you, deep memories surfacing, greater activation of the Codes of Light within you, and new realizations about who you are and why you are here. You will feel more empowered, and know you are a part of something wondrous. If it's not for you, or you're not ready to read it, you will not be attracted. But if you are, be ready to expand!

2 out of 5 stars A good idea badly written.......2004-01-06

I wanted to like this book. It sounded like a great concept. But I couldn't get past the first 50 pages. When I read fiction I want to get caught up in the story and enjoy it. This book was irritating. It's a series of stories written in third person, a la Mother Goose, interspersed with ridiculous scenes of "Mother Goose" talking to her listeners. Actually, the author has her laughing her sentences rather than saying them. God does she need an editor. "'New codes are begging to be opened within me and I need to turn my attention to the attainment of their frequency. In other words, I have to get to work on myself!' The whole group laughed at Leah's last remark and the matter-of-fact way she stated it. She joined them, then asked if they had any questions or if there was any additional background information they felt they might need. Katy cleared her throat and ventured forth with a question." Ugh.

4 out of 5 stars I can vouch for the el camino enchiladas and bahia mussells.......2002-02-23

The enchiladas, especially, were great, which they should be since it took one chef, two drunken sous chefs, and one person sitting on a stool shouting instructions about 2 solid hours to make them. But it was worth it.

                5 out of 5 stars I am smitten.......2001-11-02

I am not a cook, but after reviewing this book, i really want to be, not to mention that the recipes left me salivating. It may not be a book for the complete beginner but with some enthusiasm, the recipes in this book are very do-able. The side essays written by kathy casey are funny and informative and both authors clearly try to make the recipes understandable and do-able for the home kitchen. I am smitten with my kitchen and the tasty treats i can make in it. Thanks to Kathy Casey and Cynthia Nims for their tempting inspirations!

1 out of 5 stars V FOR VICTORY FALLS TO GRIM DEFEAT.......2002-12-05

This book is remarkably full of errors. Multiple prices for the same item are listed in different locations. Items are completely mislabelled with regard to what they are made of or what they are. When comparing prices in this guide with his other homefront guide the prices for many items are completely different reflecting this authors failure to be consistent and to proofread his work. Were it not for the pics sent by the collectors, this book would have zero utility. The pics are good thanks to his contributors but the rest of the guide for accuracy and integrity is sorely lacking. Give it a one star because of the pics. I'd pass on this sloppy work...

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful New Volume Highlighting "V" For Victory Items.......2001-12-15

This is a brand new 2001 volume featuring a wide array of collectibles with the "V" for victory from the 1940's. Many photos are large, sharp, and in full color. Most are super black and white photos. There's a nice introduction. Major topics range from Pearl Harbor, Banks, Music, V-Mail, Postcards to Linens, Stamps, Bonds, Banners, and Victory Gardens,Toys, Ads, posters, and much more. Adequate text is provided. This is a very timely book, with patriotism at an all time high. It's of interest to every American, no matter their year of birth. Add it to your library.

5 out of 5 stars Black Skin Care: Excellent Book to Read.......2002-08-18

This is an excellent book to read. I have learn so much about brown skin and various ethnic skin type. Everyone should read this book because their is a great need for knowledge on how to treat ethnic skin. Do you know how many time I've have heard professional skin care specialist say they are afraid to work on black/brown skin because of hyperpigmentation. This book is detailed, colorful pictures and insightful information on women of color. A word to the wise...Seek to understand information for yourself before you take someone elses negative/cheap reviews. Anyone who are seeking to pursue knowledge about black/brown skin this is the book. It's worth the investment to have in your library.

2 out of 5 stars Good Source Material - Overpriced As Usual.......2000-07-25

Good reference work for the practicing esthetician, as there is very little in-print regards "black skin care" for the professional costmetologist. However, like all the other books published by Milady, it's somewhat overpriced. Shop around for a used copy, or check it out at your Library, or have your Library do an "Inter-Library-Loan" request for you. Whether you buy a copy or check it out from the Library, do make the effort to read it.

I am a Mary Engelbreit fan on a tight budget, and work to get the "look" without the benefit of most of Mary's licensed products. I own or have read most of her books, and "Decorating Ideas" is by far the best deal for the money.

The book features numerous projects, many more than the other books, covering a wider range of materials, from fabric to rock. All the projects are tied to Engelbreit illustrations to boot. The dream items I wanted to make in Mary style are here!

This nearly 80- page section will be a manga-lover's delight. Also featured in the Japan section is EYE (from the Boredoms). From Canada, Marc Bell, Julie Doucet, Scott Evans, Marc Connery and Destroyer's Dan Bejar will all be featured. From beyond Japanada, artist Jim Shaw contributes a section of his visionary dream drawings, British illustrator Will Sweeney is featured with a brand new comic story, and the issue is filled out by articles on record cover designer Barney Bubbles (The Damned, Elvis Costello), mushrooms, and Steve Gerber (the creator of Howard the Duck).

It's not clear whether the third issue of The Ganzfeld should be regarded as a periodical or a book--but either way, it's gloriously illustrated and esoterically insightful. Its graphically extravagant essays often consider the spectacular results when worlds collide. The cover depicts an ordinary moth given Blakean magnitude by an EverSmart Pro Scanner. Julie Lasky profiles Tony Sarg, who turned tiny cartoon characters into godlike giants by inventing Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Hitchcock explains the elaborately artificial Rube Goldberg devices needed to create "reality" in what he called "My Most Exciting Picture" (Rope). Peter Blegvad illustrates the amazing impact on his imagination of the light-bulb-in-the-milk-glass scene from Hitchcock's Suspicion—it provoked an intellectually superb and astoundingly extended poetical meditation. Lawrence Weschsler unveils his lost essay on Edward Snow, the world's strangest explicator of Bruegel and Vermeer. The Ganzfeld 3 is like that spore that invades the ant's brain in Weschsler's book on the Museum of Jurassic Technology: once it gets inside your head, your imagination will never be the same. --Tim Appelo

                          Book Description

Tucked inside issue number 3 of The Ganzfeld, for your reading and looking pleasure, are humorous picture stories on color theory, milk, where we go when we die, and the lost genre of blank books. And that's just the usual. Bringing together a unique group of designers, illustrators, cartoonists, and artists, The Ganzfeld provides the crispest picture of the state of graphic arts to be found anywhere. Issue number 3 features a unique collaboration between The Ice Storm author Rick Moody and artist Fred Tomaselli, a new picture story by designer Geoff McFetridge, and even an illustrated essay by Alfred Hitchcock. Lengthy comics and picture stories are contributed by an international group including Ren e French, Ron Reg Jr., and Adam Dent. This installation of the anthology also puts the spotlight on history: Lawrence Weschler writes about Brueghe, two prominent design writers, Andrea Codrington and Julie Lasky, each contribute articles on lost design arts of the past, while the Hairy Who (Jim Nutt, Karl Wirsum, etc.) are given a 30 page retrospective. An invaluable resource and pleasure source for anyone interested in the graphic arts and all their various manifestations.

                            Book Description

Comics aren't just for kids, and illustrations don't merely transpose text into image. Picture stories can do more than just tell a simple, illiterate narrative, and design, well, design infiltrates the visual aspects of nearly everything that surrounds us. If these statements seems like truisms, they are, but they were hardly obvious conclusions just a few years ago, before the arts once considered merely commercial exploded into the mainstream. Unlike any other publication, the Ganzfeld gathers together a diverse sampling of recent design, illustration, and comics, together with essays that place them in a historical and critical context. Better still, this volume includes the first publication of comics genius Chris Ware's color sketchbooks; endpapers designed by nest editor Joseph Holtzman, covers by the Beastie Boys and GAP designer Mike Mills; an illustrated story by Maira Kalman; wallpaper designs by a cartoonist, a fine artist, an illustrator, and a designer; visual reportage on the Venice Biennale by Paul Davis; and far too much more to mention here.

From the author: In this study we were concerned to evaluate whether the sender plays any active role in successful ganzfeld GESP experiments by comparing sender and no-sender conditions. In a replication of Roe, Holt, & Simmonds' (2003) novel method, during the sending period receivers generated a mentation based on their experiences in ganzfeld and simultaneously a random number generator (RNG) acted as a proxy receiver by "selecting" statements from among a pool of 768 to give a 20-item "RNG mentation." Forty ganzfeld trials were conducted with novice sender-receiver pairs, of which 23 involved senders and 17 did not. Receivers registered a 25% overall hit rate, equal to mean chance expectation, with slightly better performance in sender trials than no-sender trials (26.1% versus 23.5%). Two independent judges used the RNG mentation to rank order the clips in each target set and produced hit rates of 30.6% and 16.7%. Both independent judges gave higher hit rates for the sender trials than for the no-sender trials (42.1% versus 17.6%, 26.3% versus 5.9%), though these differences were not significant. None of a number of individual differences measures significantly predicted receiver performance, and indeed none were suggestive (p <. 1).

From the author: This study was designed to explore the role of the sender in a ganzfeld ESP task, conceptually replicating Raburn and Manning's (1977) manipulation of the presence of a sender and the receiver's expectation concerning the sender's presence. The authors conducted 40 trials with an opportunity sample of participant pairs. Ganzfeld sessions were run by an automated system that randomly selected 1 of the 4 possible conditions, with both the experimenter and receiver remaining blind to the selection. During no-sender trials the sender was engaged in an alternative psi task. Overall the mean z score based upon target ratings was below chance expectation (-0.10, r = - 0.10). There were no significant main effects of sender role (p = .765), receiver expectancy (p = .632), or interaction effects, contrary to Raburn and Manning. Moderate positive correlations were found between task performance and senders' (r =. 188) and receivers' (r = .248) expectations of success. Positive correlations were found between performance and receivers having practised a mental discipline (r = .219). Overall, the results suggest that receiver expectancy may be more important than whether or not a sender is actually present.
