Good Stories.......2006-04-22

It has taken a long time for this volume to come out and make it to mass market paperback. I have mixed feelings about this fifth collection of Chicks in Chainmail stories.

This series takes the artists' ideas of women warriors, mainly chainmail bikinis, and pokes fun at the whole concept. Or it used to. In this volume the reader is treated to a very nice selection of stories involving women warriors. They are very-well written and quite entertaining. But the humor aspect is missing. A couple of the stories are a little lighter but most lack the digs of the early collections.

If you are looking for more of the type of humor found earlier in this series, you might be disappointed. But you won't be disappointed in the quality of the writing presented here. An excellent collection of stories but I miss the humor. There were some jokes (some even repeated by more than one author) but not like there used to be. There was also a larger percentage of transgender and transvestite issues than in previous volumes. I personally did not find this as a flaw but was just surprised at some of the similarities of issues amongst the stories.

I'm forced to give this 5 stars simply because it's so good........2005-11-16

The story Mightier Than the Sword by John G. Hemry alone is worth the price of the book. As usual a great series of short stories. A BUY and KEEP book at any price.

Quite funny.......2005-10-22

I got the original "Chicks in Chainmail" in high school, and it is one of my favorite fantasy books. "Turn the other Chick" is also quite good, continuing one or two stories from the original. This is "amazon humor" with strong women, tons of puns and some sexy scenes (making some of the stories PG). I had a lot of fun with it.

Ladies Only? Love it , Lots of FUN!.......2006-04-11

Get a sense of humor guys (and yes I mean males) All the "bashes" seam to come from men. Some great stories and laughs. Great satire. Read this book on a gloomy day (it took me anafternoon) to cheer the day up. I have read and re-read this book. Found the stories to be very readable - while I did not "love" every story and think it classical lit - I found it humorous and helpful. Let's see more ladies in chainmail. Last story left melaughing.

A Favorite!.......2005-10-22

This is one of my favorite fantasy books, and easily the best fantasy compilation I've read. It's got puns, some gender bending, strong women, and some fun, sexy scenes. (Some stories are probably PG).

From mediocre to dire.......2004-10-04

There are a few half-decent entertaining works in this book. In fact about half of them are average, mildly entertaining stories. The problem is the other half are below average to flat out dire.

The arrangement of the stories left something to be desired as well. Placing the very worst story of the collection in the fourth slot, after a couple below average tales almost put an end to my reading right there. The story I'm speaking of is the Hilary Clinton in Valhalla tale.

Even the better stories are hobbled by the restrictions of the collection. One after the other of stories that are very similar, bad jokes that aren't presented too differently from one story to the other just wears the reader down with the lack of variety. Really, how many breastplate asides and jokes are necessary?

Suffice to say that the title is the cleverest part of the collection. Good idea, but it wasn't pulled off.

2.5 stars that I rounded down to a 2.

Not what I expected.......2002-11-20

I bought this because I like fantasy short stories and I thought the title was funny. There were only 3 stories I actually liked; TEACHER'S PET/Josepha Sherman, WERE-WENCH/Jan Stirling and BLOOD CALLS TO BLOOD/Elisabeth Waters. The rest were boring or unreadable. It has been 4 months since I got this book and its taken me this long to force myself to finish it. What a disappointment.

Miserable failure........2002-05-15

I too thought this would be fun, but the stories are trite, a struggle to read, pure boredom. I got as far as Hillary Clinton being transported to Valhalla after a train crash, and this book crashed shut. It has made the rounds in my office without one person completing the book, or any positive comments. I can't get rid of it. Even as an oddity, it is a miserable failure. This feminist joke is horribly presented. Any comic book on the same subject would be better.

Everything you ever needed to know and more.......2007-05-22

This probably should NOT be labelled as a Haggadah, per se; it is an extremely in depth study of every aspect of the Passover Seder. While it is an excellent source of information, it is something to be studied long before Seder and could not possibly be used as the traditional text during the ceremony. I found it to be quite inspirational, though, and pulled some of the text out for use during our Seder for contemplation and to spark conversation regarding, as the title asks, "how will you be different this Passover?".

Extremely thought provoking........2007-05-14

I'm still reading through it, even though Passover's long over. Lots of interesting interpretations that I'd never learned before, about all aspects of Passover and the Haggadah.

Even for tradtionalists.......2007-03-15

Michael Kagan's take on the traditional haggadah is not for those who want to rush through the ritual and get to the food. He asks a lot of questions -- very appropriate -- that require a deep breath, a lot of thought and serious discussion.

We have used the same haggadah for 25 years (the Rabbinical Assembly's "Feast of Freedom") with great satisfaction, but have always supplemented it with comments and questions from others. Kagan's contributions will certainly enhance our sedarim this year and on many future occasions.

PS -- Even if you are traditional, do not be afraid of the liberal/renewal perspective of the author. His insights contain enough variety and genuine depth to speak to people in every religious and secular context.

Holiday Recipes.......2001-12-17

Beautiful pictures and easy to follow instructions are just the beginning. Inside you will find recipes that are family traditions, and some that are going to be. Every Holiday is covered, but the Christmas recipes are the best. Christmas Season at our house begins with opening this book, and finding our favorites from last year, and adding new ones for this one. A must have if you do Holiday entertaining.
