Book Description

As part of the Special Section of Britain's Ministry of Intelligence, Tara Chace is one of a handful of operatives they call when they need to clean up a mess, or to make a new one. It's a world of questionable morals. For instance, is it better to assassinate a general in the Russian mafia rather than allow him to peddle more guns and drugs in underprivileged countries? Tara's bosses seem to think so. But the Russian mafia ask their own question - once someone has taken the life of one of their officers, can they continue to let that person live? Greg Rucka peels back the lid on the traditional espionage story to see the nastiness inside, and Steve Rolston brings it to life with stunning clarity.

4 out of 5 stars Shades of Gray Written in Black & White.......2007-03-08

Greg Rucka's excellent spy series follows the members of the Special Section of Britain's Ministry of Intelligence. This black and white series explores the moral ambiguities that flow in and around the dirty deeds done in the name of duty, patriotism, and having a job. The "Minders", or field agents, are not James Bond pretty, but are rather professionals in the field of espionage, often held fast by the peculiar rules of their trade. Eminently readable, it was one of those series that had me buying all of the trades as soon as I finished the previous. Also, look for the "prequel", Whiteout, also by Rucka!

5 out of 5 stars The British "Alias" (without the soap-opera drama).......2005-05-29

I was a little skeptical at first about this book. Rucka is not a Brit, but he tries writing for English characters. Surprisingly, Rucka deftly handles the dialogue without sounding like he's just sticking in a "bloody" or a "sod off" here and there. He successfully immerses the reader in the world of British black ops.

This book reminds me of the American TV show "Alias," but without the romance and convoluted relationships. This is a straight-forward spy book, with believable action and well-crafted character development.

Many people have complained about Steve Rolston's simplistic artwork style. It doesn't bother me. I wouldn't say he's my favorite artist, but it doesn't get in the way of Rucka's brilliant story.

5 out of 5 stars VERY high quality work.......2005-03-25

This is an "adult" graphic novel, not in the sexual-content sense but because the plot does not involve superheroes, fantasy, or magic. In fact, it's much more gritty and topical than even most adult thrillers I've read. The Secret Intelligence Service, based in London, is (apparently) an MI-6 kind of operation, chartered to carry out assassinations and other operations abroad but whose agents are not even allowed to be armed at home. Tara Chace -- "Minder Two" -- is their best shooter and the story opens with her involved in an unauthorized Special Operation in Kosovo to take out a rogue Russian officer now running with the Russian mafia. Her success, followed by an iffy escape from the scene, leads the Russians to put a bounty on her head -- and to fire a shoulder-launched rocket at the SIS headquarters, just to show they can. Paul Crocker, Director of Ops, wants not just to catch the perpetrators of the attack, he wants them dead. The Kosovo operation was a favor owed to the CIA, who now decline to help in his vendetta. And so on, in a nicely complicated plot that revolves on personalities and the rules of the game in a changed world as much as on action sequences. The art is straight black-and-white line drawing that emphasizes facial expression and body language -- which fits well with the rather talky style of the narration. My only complaint is that the story doesn't so much end as simply stop -- obviously only the first episode in a continuing series (which I haven't seen any sign of).

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely, unbelievably good!!!!.......2004-03-27

Every once in a while a comics series comes along that is so far ahead of the curve, you wonder how anything else could possibly measure up. Ennis' Preacher is one. Ellis' Transmetropolitan is another. Queen & Country is definitely one of the greats!! This is one of those series that shows, in graet detail, that there is some incredibly strong writing going on in comics today. Rucka's dialogue and pacing are so spot on and realistic! This is a book that transceds the perception that comics are for kids and are of no real value as "literature". Rucka has created a stunning work of art with Queen & Country, one that is continually being perfected month after month.

5 out of 5 stars THe name is Chase, Tara Chase.......2003-10-16

Greg Rucka is one of the authors, who can write believable Batman stories. Imagine how real he can get qithout the restrains of spandex-clad characters!
This is a realistic spy thriller, full of real life and politicla situations. This is le Carre of comic books, really.
Tara Chase is a British agent, sent to assasinate a rogue Russian general, who turned into an arms dealer.
This book doesn't give you high-reaching conspiracies and years-old secrets, the conflict plays out much like it would in real life. But it doesn't make it less exciting.
The art is very good. It seems cartoony at first, but it somehow manages to conway emotions very clearly, in fact, more clearly than realistic art, found in most action-adventure comics.
Queen & Country started as a mini-series, but was turned into an ongoing comics. After reading this, you'll see why it's so.
And you'll be glad, that there are other missions you can observe.

Book Description

Broken Ground is a riveting exploration of the dark, brooding presence of the First World War in the lives of the inhabitants of a “soldier’s settlement” on Vancouver Island. From out of a stubborn, desolate landscape studded with tree stumps, the settlers of Portuguese Creek have built a new life for themselves. But when an encroaching forest fire threatens this fledgling settlement, it also intensifies the remembered horrors of war. The story of Portuguese Creek is told by several of its citizens, including a boy trying to recover from the sudden loss of his father, and a former teacher haunted by what happened to the soldiers he led in France. With a memorable cast of characters, and by turns heart-rending and tragic, humorous and humane, Broken Ground is a powerful novel that immerses us in the lives of an entire community.

4 out of 5 stars Broken ground and broken hopes.......2001-01-21

Jack Hodgins once recalled a writing seminar attended by William Golding. When a student mentioned she'd heard authors should "write what they know", Golding "mounted his transparent Nobel pedestal" to thunder that he'd never been marooned on a desert island nor constructed a cathedral. Jack Hodgins may have listened to his relatives relate land clearing on Vancouver Island. He may even have blown a few tree stumps. Certainly, he never slogged through muddy trenches on the Western Front in France in 1916. Good thing; we might never have had the opportunity to relish his descriptions of the agonies of living through and having to remember that conflict in later years. For Hodgins is a master of writing "what he knows" in combination with what he learns or conjures. The result is an engaging read, writing not to be missed.

Broken Ground's account of veteran resettlement in Canada strikes a touchy spot. Seeing the remnants of post-World War I rural allotments [don't grace them with the name 'farm'], along country lanes in the US and Canada or in bleak isolation in Australian paddocks, induces the conjuring of ghosts. Cramped houses, wretched and sagging, roofless or home to hay bales were once inhabited by families seeking a promised future. These abandoned sites are vivid testimony of how fragile that future valid rewards given men who'd survived Western Civilization's [sic] most horrendous conflict. Hodgins gives us a fresh reminder of the impact of that strife and the pitiable acknowledgment given its participants. They had just spent years combating enemies both human and natural, only to return home and learn struggling to survive remained central to their lives.

Hodgins, who has a fine knack for portraying people, here expresses several voices in depicting those post-Great War conditions in rural Vancouver Island. The common thread of those voices is Matt Pearson, veteran, farmer, teacher. Hodgins' style makes it easy to consider Pearson a projection of Hodgins himself, thrust back in time, living an imagined life. Pearson isn't hardened by the war, although he's certainly toughened. Disillusionment assaults, but doesn't overwhelm him. Pearson's role grows as the book wends its way to a conclusion in modern times. Throughout the book, Hodgins' portrayal of the survivors of that era of unfulfilled promises reflects what he knows, yet hasn't lived. It's a fine expression of writing talent. You needn't be either Canadian nor World War I veteran to enjoy what Hodgins has produced. Reading this book requires no more than to be sympathetic to human values.

5 out of 5 stars A book worth the trouble of getting.......2000-07-12

I realy enjoyed this novel. Sometimes it was difficult but always worth the effort. A settlement on Vacouver island in the 1920's is the setting. It was mainly for soldiers returning from WWI. So in addition to the grind of removing huge stumps and trying to farm the land they worked in the woods as loggers, or shop keepers; WWI was always in the background. The characters did not especially become close to me but I still liked the over all flavor of them. I don't think they were well developed in the sense of getting real close to them. The main character, Matt Pearson is developed and you understand him as the ending is disclosed...

5 out of 5 stars A novel about the invisible realities of America today........1997-10-20

I read it about a decade ago when it came out. An excerpt from it was published while John Keeble was still working on it, and I remember being struck by the style, the elaborate artistry in it, the strength of language, primarily the strength of the verbs he uses. Every now and then during these past few years I take out this book when I want to be reminded of the care a writer puts into his sentences. What is most striking here is the writer's calm voice that conjures for us the power of visionary dread. Broken Ground is also rich in its knowledge of the land, the people, the smell of the air, the brightness and darkness of the Pacific Northwest where a privately run prison is being built...all add up to a frightening vision of the realities around us in the postmodern age. Lynn Sharon Schwartz described this novel as one of the best political novles of the 1980s. I agree with her. By Thomas Palakeel

Invincible is a half breed alien, his dad being an extremely powerful superhuman. He is dealing with finishing high school, and defending the planet when his dad is busy with the Guardians of the Globe. Said Guardians are a Justice League parody that his dad may just have bumped off.

He also has two chicks chasing him, a friend who knows his secret identity, and bad guys to fight.

4 out of 5 stars A great build up for the series.......2007-02-25

This trade actually tells four individual stories. The first has Mark dealing with Alan the Alein a creature his father had fought many times before and never bothered to talk to. This is a comedic high point for the series so far. The next has Mark and his best friend checking out colleges and fighting a strange robotic zombie creature. Finally, the series introduces the super hero team the Gaurdians of the Globe who are all murdered. The funeral sets up the big twist that will put this series on the fast track and make it more then a funny silver age super hero homage.
If you pick up the first two trades in this series and like it's fun cosmic super hero adventure well, you ain't seen nothing yet.

                4 out of 5 stars Excellent Series.......2006-07-31

I really like Kirkman's Incredible and Volume Two is the pick of the bunch. Simple but honest writing still allows him to deliver a shock and maximum emotional impact. I can't give it five stars because it does feel a little light - each trade paperback will not occupy your time for that long. But, you will pick this series up to reread again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Kirkman is great!.......2004-07-04

I first picked this series up for the artwork, but then became captivated by the story. I bought the trades to catch up on what I missed, wow I was missing one of the best stories in comics today. Kirkman does a wonderful job bringing the characters to life with twists and turns around every corner. Ottley's artwork fits it perfectly grade A stuff on both parts. This trade also comes with pages of neat extra sketches and writings.
This is well worth the money, if your not reading Invincible I would HIGHLY recommend picking it up, it's amazing!

4 out of 5 stars Alien Legion: Footsloggers.......2007-01-15

If you're a fan of Star Wars, you'll probably like the Alien Legion. If you read the Legion Of The Damned novels by William C. Dietz, you will probably enjoy the Alien Legion. Heck, if Science Fiction with a lot of weapons, soldiers, alien races, battle-primed spaceships, hostile planetary environments, a dab of galactic politics (that doesn't descend to Phantom-Menace-like mediocrity), and lots of action is appealing to your sensibilities, then the Alien Legion Wants You!!

Much as I admire the artwork by Frank Cirocco, penciller, and Terry Austin, inker for chapters 1-4, I'm anxious to point out that Footsloggers features some Chris Warner art as well. He inks Chapters 5 and 6 and, before that, does the pencilling on some back-up stories that are squeezed in between the main Chapters. Chris Warner was always a favourite artist of mine; I recall that he drew a Predator mini-series, something called Black Cross, and even pencilled issue #408 of Batman before having some kind of falling out with DC Comics after failing to deliver some artwork on time. DC had been heralding his upcoming stint on Batman, at that time, and it never happened--oh, what might have been. Anyway--Chris Warner--an artist you might want to check out, even here in Alien Legion: Footsloggers.

As for the stories and their characters, creator Carl Potts and scripter Alan Zelenetz do resort to certain "types" when filling out the Legion ranks--the no-nonsense Commander, Sarigar; the brutal, violent warrior Jugger Grimrod (fan favourite who would appeal to fans of Wolverine, Lobo, etc.); the conscientious medic/telepath Meico; the all-around likeable and reliable human Torie Montroc the Third; the cowardly Skob, who must redeem himself...and on and on. But the fact that these characters are all different races allows for some creative skewing of what has become a little too familiar: Sarigar is serpentine, Meico is mollusc-like (I suppose), with four arms, Skob is avian, and Grimrod is green and mean. Every attempt is made to flesh out these aliens and give them a few surprising facets. Sarigar is quick-thinking and quite intelligent, but one of the back-up stories shows how he was foolishly duped by his own sister--probably one of the few "people" close enough to him to play with his emotions. Torie Montroc, left to die by himself by a traitorous comrade, experiences odd flashbacks that turn into fantasies of revenge against his own father, a sanctimonious tycoon who forced his son to give up the cushy life and join the Legion; this is one of my favourite sequences, because it is such a dark look at a heroic character's deep anger. We also have the hyena-esque (?) Zeerod Travane who becomes less of the Legion's annoying resident chatterbox and more of a 3D character when we learn what he gave up, and what guilt he needs to expiate, by joining the Legion.

All this, plus the evil Harkilons trying to subvert peace in the galaxy, with their illegal accumulation of dangerous fissionable materials off planets ripe for exploitation unless Force Nomad (that's Sarigar and Co.s regiment name) can intervene. Other enemies include a group of pacificists on the planet Kol, who stage a bizarre military coup involving mind-snatching and hostage-taking, while at the same time trying to remain true pacifists. This tense stand-off brings out the best and worst in some of the Legionnaires, as well as the formerly nonviolent enemy, as complicated situation degenerates into a total mess.

The back-up stories--with the art by Chris Warner--are not just filler. They relate to some development or mystery barely alluded to in the main Chapter that precedes each back-up piece; either a character drops a hint about his past, which gets highlighted in its own little tale, or some part of the main Chapter leaves some puzzling piece of action or political intrigue unresolved until it is dealt with later.

All in all, this is a wonderful treatment of Space Opera in comics books, now collected into Alien Legion graphic novels--and Footsloggers will get you signed up with the Legion, in fine style, though Jugger Grimrod fans will be left wanting more.

5 out of 5 stars THE PREMIERE OF THE ALIEN LEGION.......2006-01-17

Checker Books has put out two previous volumes collecting the adventures of Carl Potts' Alien Legion but this book, "Alien Legion: Footsloggers" takes readers back to the very beginning, reprinting the first six issues of this classic series from Marvel's Epic line. The series was created by artist Carl Potts although Alan Zelenetz handles the writing chores accompanied by a host of talented artists including Terry Shoemaker, Frank Cirocco, Terry Austin, Potts, and Chris Warner.

Potts' Alien Legion concept is described as a French Foreign Legion in space which is pretty accurate although I like to compare it to some of those big budget, all-star cast WWII films like The Guns of Navarone or The Dirty Dozen that featured groups of diverse characters and a tough commanding officer, hauling down the most grueling assignments the Galarchy can throw at them. As the book unfolds, two Legion shuttles are fired upon by the Harkilons who've broken an uneasy peace treaty. They crash on the world of Wedifact IV, where they were going to investigate mineral pirates who are stripping the planet of their natural resources. The Legionnaires are at a disadvantage right off the bat. Because the inhabitants on Wedifact IV are still somewhat pre-historic, they are armed with only light dart guns as opposed to lasers.

The Pirates have so such constraints and completely wipe out the Legionnaires of the first shuttle. We then meet Captain Sarigar and his diverse band including Lt. Montroc, the only human among the group. It's up to Sarigar and his soldiers to take down the pirates while maintaining the developing balance on the planet.

In addition to the two-issue length opening story, there are several shorter stories in the book, many giving a bit of back story on the various members of the Legion. Potts' book is really like an old, episodic space adventure, similar to Buck Rogers or Flash Gordon. The influence of Star Wars is evident in the design and look of the various aliens who make up the Legion. There are insectoid aliens, reptilian aliens, beasts...all looking like they came out the Cantina scene. The characters are rather standard, stock characters but Zelenetz keeps the action moving well throughout all the tales and the average ranges from very good to outstanding. Thankfully Checker Books continues to make fun titles like this available to fans again.

4 out of 5 stars The beginnings of an eighties sci-fi classic!.......2005-05-24

Although this is Checker's third collection of Alien Legion stories, chronologically these are actually the oldest stories. In fact, this book compiles the very first six issues of the original series! The other two volumes (Force Nomad and Piecemaker) collect the second run, which was more critically acclaimed due to the work of writer Chuck Dixon. But even though these early tales by Carl Potts and Alan Zelenetz did not get the same level of critical attention, don't dismiss them out of hand. They establish the fundamentals of the Legion and their reality. These stories aren't nearly as deep in character as Dixon's later works, but they make up for it with raw creative energy and imagination. Particularly if you've read the other Alien Legion collections, these stories are fun to see how it all began. For someone who has never experienced the Alien Legion, this is a grand place to start (it is the beginning, after all). If you want to read just ONE Alien Legion book, then I'd probably recommend Force Nomad instead, or perhaps Tenants of Hell, which is reprinted by Titan Books. (Between Checker and Titan, there are now a total of FIVE Alien Legion collections on the market, and they're all good stuff!)

4 out of 5 stars Better than Jim Bakker's book on PTL.......2006-10-09

A few years back I read Jim Bakker's book on the PTL crisis titled "I Was Wrong." I wasn't overly impressed the way he tried to downplay his culpability.

"Integrity" is a bit different. Mr. Dortch is very open with his faults and the wrongs he did (either by commission or omission). He comes across as a lot more honest than Mr. Bakker. He gives a much more in-depth view of the incident with Jessica Hahn than in Bakker's book, since he handled it on PTL's side. He also talks about how he repeatedly stayed silent when he should have spoke up when he saw financial problems at PTL.

The two books work well with each other, each giving differing views and peices of the puzzle to the PTL crisis, but this is the better of the two. If you want to know the FULL story of PTL, get both books.

Dortch ends his book with a long chapter dealing with four kinds of integrity:
                1) arrogant integrity (I'm above reproach);
                2) selective integrity (we do something wrong because the ends justify the means - situational ethics);
                3) judgemental integrity (being overly judgemental because we feel guilty over our own lack of integrity);
                4) consensual integrity (not speaking up when we know we should, consenting to the wrong being done by simply being silent on it).

He gives "tips" on how to guard against each of these.

I give it 4 stars and well worth the read.

Richard Dortch lets us share some of his most intimate thoughts during a season of personal crisis. This former PTL president describes the personal, spiritual struggle he encountered and his method of overcoming the challenges of regaining his integrity. If one considers the "examined life" to be desired, the situations in which Dortch found himself provided furtile soil for him to either get bitter or better. His choice was the latter. Readers going through their own examinations in life will glean insights from the trials Dortch successfully overcame.

                  Book Description

Thomas Dennis emigrated to America from England in 1663, settling in Ipswich, a Massachusetts village a long day's sail north of Boston. He had apprenticed in joinery, the most common method of making furniture in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Britain, and he became Ipswich's second joiner, setting up shop in the heart of the village. During his lifetime, Dennis won wide renown as an artisan. Today, connoisseurs judge his elaborately carved furniture as among the best produced in seventeenth-century America.

Robert Tarule, historian and accomplished craftsman, brilliantly recreates Dennis's world in recounting how he created a single oak chest. Writing as a woodworker himself, Tarule vividly portrays Dennis walking through the woods looking for the right trees; sawing and splitting the wood on site; and working in his shop on the chest -- planing, joining, and carving. Dennis inherited a knowledge of wood and woodworking that dated back centuries before he was born, and Tarule traces this tradition from Old World to New. He also depicts the natural and social landscape in which Dennis operated, from the sights, sounds, and smells of colonial Ipswich and its surrounding countryside to the laws that governed his use of trees and his network of personal and professional relationships.

Thomas Dennis embodies a world that had begun to disappear even during his lifetime, one that today may seem unimaginably distant. Imaginatively conceived and elegantly executed, The Artisan of Ipswich gives readers a tangible understanding of that distant past.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding biography of early American craftsman.......2004-09-28

Tarule, himself a furniture-maker in Vermont making reproductions of 17th-century furniture, tells Thomas Dennis's story almost as if Dennis were a character in a novel. Dennis was one of the first furniture-makers in America to gain notoriety. Coming to America and settling in the Massachusetts village of Ipswich in the mid 1600s, Dennis used many of the techniques and styles found in British furniture-making of this period. Yet having to select appropriate trees from American forests, usually in consideration of village laws relating to certain kinds of trees, work with other American craftsmen, make furniture to order from nearby residents, and give it suitable embellishments for attractiveness, Dennis is seen as an originator of American woodworking and furniture-making. But in this work, Tarule is not interested in a study of furniture-making, or a history of it. The author's concern is the work and expertise Dennis put into making one oak chest. From the author's following this in detail, one learns a great deal about 17th-century furniture-making and also the regional Colonial society. For Dennis is viewed in the narrative as both a extraordinary and respected craftsman and a member of the community which supported and shaped his trade. Tarule does not simply say what kind of wood the particular chest was made of, but takes the reader right with Dennis as he goes to the nearby woods looking for a tree with suitable oak tree, keeping in mind the village's laws. "As soon as Thomas Dennis entered the Ipswich woods, he was in the New World. The forest was primordial...The sort of trees Dennis looked for are apparent in his furniture. The wood is close grained...." And so on with a discussion of different types of oak trees whose characteristics Ipswich artists knew from "forest type, slope degree and direction, dampness of the ground, soil conditions, and even genetic variation on local trees." Tarule even engages in a comparison of British forests and American forests of the period, and changes in American forests over time. Tarule weaves a fascinating narrative under the general heading of Americana of interest to diverse readers such as antique dealers, woodworkers, and American Colonial historians.

This book was better than i have imagined... it comes with a poster, a cards set and the book itself, but lacks that does not come with a vinyl figure at all, like fusion from IDN pro comes. Anyways it has lots of interviews with the toys designers, and the book itself has a great design effort!
