    Book Description

This volume contains what Lawrence himself called "philosophicalish" essays written in the decade 1915-25. The topics range from politics to nature, from religion to education; the tone from lighthearted humor to mordant wit, to spiritual meditation. For all these contrasts, however, the essays share many of the underlying themes of the mature Lawrence: "Be thyself" could be the volume's motto. As far as possible, this edition restores what Lawrence wrote before typists, editors, and compositors made the extensive alterations that have been followed in all previous editions of the texts--on occasion entire passages removed by mistake or for reasons of censorship have been recovered. The introduction describes the genesis, textual history, and reception of the essays; notes offer help with allusions and other difficult points. Several incomplete and unpublished essays are reproduced in an appendix.

3 out of 5 stars back jacket summary.......2006-03-04

from the back cover of the September 1990 Daw paperback edition
        cover illustration by Richard Hescox
The Heirs of Hammerfell plunges us straight into the midst of a devastating clan feud between two of these realms-Hammerfell and Storn-just as Storn has struck what may prove Hammerfell's death stroke, setting the ancestral castle ablzae, slaying its lord, and sending its lady fleeing into the night with her twin infant sons, Alastair and Conn.
Conn is separated from his mother that fateful night, but she and Alastair find sanctuary in Thendara City, among the wealthy and the laran-gifted. Yet Conn, too, survives, to be raised in secret among those who would see Storn overthrown. But it is not until Conn's laran manifests that the fates of the twins are finally, inextricably linked in a pattern which could bring a new beginning or total ruin to Hammerfell and its heirs...

2 out of 5 stars one of the weaker Darkover novels.......2003-12-12

The Heirs of Hammerfell is a Darkover novel set in the time of the Hundred Kingdoms. Like the other Darkover novels, this book can stand on its own with no need of having read the preceding books in the series. At the time this book was published, it was the first Darkover novel to have been released in Hardcover and it was the first new Darkover novel in a five year period. Unfortunately, this is not among the best of Marion Zimmer Bradley's work.

This novel is the story of the duchy of Hammerfell and the result of its ancient blood feud with neighboring Storn. The novel opens with the aging (40 something) Duke of Hammerfell taking Ermine as a wife. She gives birth to twin boys. When they are perhaps a year old, there is an attack by Ardrin of Storn. Their home is destroyed, and their father murdered. Ermine escapes, but gets separated from the man carrying the younger son, Conn. Each boy is raised believing that they are the only surviving heir to Hammerfell. Alastair is raised by his mother in the Hastur capital city of Thendara. Conn is raised by Markos, a family retainer, in the mountains of Hammerfell.

This is the story of twins, separated at a young age, and their attempt to regain the duchy of Hammerfell from their ancient enemy of Storn. The two are reunited eighteen years later, and what could have/should have been a major conflict in the book is shuffled to the side with minimal contention between Conn and Alastair. This book is as much of a romance as the adventure that it hinted at being.

I like the Darkover series, but this is perhaps the worst of the books that I have read so far. There is very little actual conflict (even though it had such a great set-up), and what conflict there was got resolved with so little fuss that it hardly seemed worth it. I would recommend this book only if you were looking to read all of the Darkover novels. As each book stands on its own, there is no reason to read this to complete your understanding of the story, and this should certainly not be the first book you read if you are starting the series. It's just not that good.

3 out of 5 stars Weak? Yes. Terrible? No. Enjoyable? I thought so........2000-10-05

The story is more simplistic than Bradley's best work, yes.

It is not the best Darkover story, and not one I'd advise starting off with.

However, for those familiar with the setting, it's an enjoyable tale, perhaps on par with _Star of Danger_: fun, light reading in a familiar world.

        2 out of 5 stars Lightweight story........1998-10-04

This books feels like the author might even have been thinking of writing a Darkover children's book. There is almost no conflict. What should have been a tense story of twin brothers separated from infancy, each of whom thinks he is the sole heir of the kingdom, works out far too neatly and with unrealistically little fuss. The main reason to get this book would be to complete a Darkover collection. I wouldn't seek it out otherwise.

        1 out of 5 stars too predictable.......1998-07-29

I haven't read any other Darkover novels, but I have read other novels of Bradley, and she can write well. The problem with this novel is that it is predicable and the ending was too tidy. Almost the moment there was a problem, it was solved by magic or by coincidence.

And they are one book. This is one of the greatest works in fantasy literature and it is a shame that they are no longer in print.

and the book about Ingulf are very good also. He also wrote , a two-book series, with his sister, Marion Zimmer Bradley. They are all at least four-star books.

                    5 out of 5 stars Hidden Treasure.......2006-09-21

I bought my copy of this book from a bargin bin, thinking that it was probably worth a punt.(I liked the cover) I was more than rewarded. I believe that this is the equal of any of the top fantasy titles. As I read it I kept thinking this will get boring, but it never did.
It is the second part of the 2 parts and I had some trouble before I was able to get hold of the 1st half. I thought that having already read the 2nd half first it would spoil the the opening, but I was wrong. That is fabulous as well. " A gathering of Heros" is nearly as good, and "Ingulf the Mad" is not quite as good but is still well worth the read. I wish I could get a copy of his unpublished book "The King Who Was of Old".

5 out of 5 stars The Dark Border - King Chondos' Ride.......2003-11-12

The sequel to the suspenseful "The Lost Prince", this novel is the direct continuation of the story - they are literally one and the same. In a sense, this novel ends on a cliffhanger - you could believe that the story has not been finished and a third book is required. However, there is only one loose end - and that is all that you need to go out and get everything Paul Edwin Zimmer has ever been involved with!

But if you need the sequel (and you will!) you'll need to get your hands on "The Gathering Of Heroes".

While "The Lost Prince" focused more on the events of the twin princes, and slightly on some military leaders, this novel tends to reverse the situation. You still get your heroics in the many different battles fought, lost and won, however I found the war to be slightly less gripping than the escapism of Chondos.

The beauty of these books are the depth. You can read them several times, and always be enamored as much as the first time you read it. One beautiful aspect is that Paul has created situations where conflict arises in places where (under different circumstances) friendship ought to exist.

Istvan (the Archer) Di'Vega, hero of the school of the five swords and Martos, student of Istvan's long and dear friend, are placed in charge of armies that war against each other, both knowing the futility of the situation, both being in total awe of the other, and both knowing that the evil force across the border are unnervingly still - as if they were allowing the war to continue.
But when they finally meet the circumstances are so outrageous that they battle each other for their life.

5 out of 5 stars There is no third book!.......2003-06-17

There is no trilogy. The Lost Prince and King Chondos' Ride were originally intended as one book. The ending isn't as open as most people seem to think. Go back and read it again, is there really any doubt to the outcome?

"I wrote the ending first," Paul once said, "after reading 'The Defence of Guenevre.' The book was written to lead to the ending."

Paul refers to the poem by William Morris. The Defence of Guenevre" The poem ends with Arthur's courtiers straining to hear an approaching sound:

"Her cheeks grew crimson, as the headlong speed

Of the roan charger drew all men to see

The knight who came was Launcelot in good need."

The deliberate understatement is stronger than any melodrama. Nor is anything more needed. Aside from the fact that Morris could count on his Victorian readers to know that Guenevre would be rescued, the arrival of a champion is enough to complete the poem. In her defence, Guenevre complains that she is unfairly damned because she was given a choice between two mighty lovers. Put on trial by one of those lovers, she is in despair. The coming of Launcelot, the second one, gives her hope.

With that in mind, can there truly be any doubt as to the outcome?

I have been searching for this series for many years now. I had acquired it as a child, and lost my two books in a move. Ironicly, I ran across the two have half a country away. Eagerly I have read them both and have not been disapointed wiht the detail and intensity the charecters have been written. I have been driven to finish the trilogy, and am greatly disappointed to think that I will never know what happens to DiVega and Jodos. I recommend these 2 books to anyone who loves fantasy. If by chance you run across the thrid book please feel free to contact me. Excuse the errors I am not the best writer, that's why I read!

The Essential Titus Burckhardt is the much-anticipated collection of writings from Titus Burckhardt, one of the great Perennialist authors of the 20th century, edited by the world's foremost expert on the Burckhardt body of works, William Stoddart. Burckhardt's writings are characterized by (1) a profound grounding in the Perennial Philosophy and integral metaphysics, (2) a remarkable history of contacts with traditional peoples and their civilizations, (3) a true artist's knowledge of and love for traditional art, (4) a scholar's knowledge of diverse source materials not accessible to most modern seekers, and (5) a gifted teacher's ability to make all of these things understandable and of deep interest to readers. This collection will bring together many of Burckhardt's most representative writings that will amply demonstrate these qualities. The editor of the collection, Dr. William Stoddart, is himself a writer within the Perennialist school, and is perhaps best known for his concise outlines of many the world's great religious traditions as well as for his many excellent translations into English of many of the works of Schuon and Burckhardt. This essential collection of Burckhardt's writings is illustrated by numerous black and white drawings, and sixteen pages of full color photograhs

Titus Burckhardt, whether fixing his attention on the proper philosophy, or the proper architecture, or the proper occultism, brings a liberal yet formiddable intelligence to whichever of these works he sets his hand to.
Burckhardt, when laying out a sacred temple, would have it oriented north-south with one door leading in and one door leading out, ensuring it's earthly and squarely relationship to it's heavenly and circular origin. The language and ideas both sound archaic due to a radical loss of traditional forms and even degenerate customs to the point that what is old now sounds new. Burckhardt, I'm sure, would delight in such a circular manifestation of tradition. In a society where number has lost it's gender, where sacred art has lost it's object, and philosophy it's inner meaning, Burckhardt's plaintive sentences recall all of this and brings the perennial philosophy to bear in many of it's traditional manifestations. This philosophy, this perennialism is shown by virtue of man's loss of meaning when he attempts to abandon it, quite simply will not go away. Or will it?

                    5 out of 5 stars QUINTESSENTIAL BURCKHARDT.......2006-06-11

Titus Burckhardt's brilliant works brings the reader virtually into the domain in which he is writing about. An anthology of the world's great religions and cultures. I read his book Fez City of Islam and was also very impressed. But this is vintage Burckhardt. This is top notch. Burckhardt's works contain a treasure chest full of info. on Morocco & the Moors. He was a Sufi so that explains his writting style, I might also purchase his book "Introduction to the Sufi Doctrine"

5 out of 5 stars The true human, the true artistic, vocation is to transcend oneself........2006-05-24

_Titus Burckhardt was one of the great expositors of the perennial philosophy, along with the Traditionalists Rene Guenon, Ananda Coomaraswamy, and Frithjof Schuon. It is obvious to me that he truly experienced what he wrote upon. To him Intellection was not an abstract metaphysical principle. This is the miracle of true contemplative thought in the modern age.

_His emphasis tended more to the nature of what constitutes sacred art. That is why this volume is so well illustrated with both color plates, as well as, black and white images. His central message is that Tradition possesses a secret power that is communicated to an entire civilization; even in those arts and crafts whose objects include nothing particularly sacred. In a theocratic society, the humblest activity participates in heavenly benediction. In contrast, "sacred art" in the West since the Renaissance is essentially profane art with only a superficial religious theme.

_There are some thick, but important, volumes that you find yourself despairing that you will ever get to the end of. However, this thick volume of the essential Burckhardt (like its sister volume on the essential Schuon) is such a joy to read that you never want it to come to an end. Unlike drier works, every page restores your soul instead of draining it.

                      Book Description

"Rice, spice, and an endless variety of crisp leaves and pungent herbs" is how Vatcharin Bhumichitr describes meals enjoyed in Southeast Asia, where salads are not mere side dishes but are often the meal itself. This culinary voyage of user-friendly recipes offers an astonishing variety of leaves, roots, vegetables, fruit, noodles, meats, fish, and shellfish—all enhanced by original, piquant dressings. Dishes such as Indonesia's Gado Gado with its peanut sauce, the fruit-enlivened Rojak of Malaysia and Singapore, Vietnam's Crab Salad with Crispy Noodles or its Minced Pork, Prawn, and Pineapple Salad, and the Smoked Fish and Green Mango Salad of Cambodia promise a new world of flavor and texture.

                      Book Description

Looking through the pages of Fun Fabrics of the 50s will transport you back to the days of Beaver Cleaver shirt plaids, cowboy heroes flannel pajamas, early American rec room drapery, splashy lounge chair tropical blooms, housewives' duster florals, and festive south-of-the-border kitchen curtains. The decade's fascination with geometric shapes, bright colors and "foreign" motifs results in interesting, sometimes strange, combinations of design. For designers and 50s fanatics alike, this full-color book offers hundreds of fabric styles that reflect an innocent era.

1 out of 5 stars Fun Fabrics of the '50s.......2004-10-14

What a disappointment! Yes, the photos are gorgeous, but there is no text. There is no source reference for the fabric shown. After studying the photos,I began to wonder if the fabrics were really from that era. They probably are, but can you prove it? Where is the documentation? How can I learn? Do I really trust a photo with no analyses. If you are a novice desiring to learn textile history, this is not the book for you. I hope someday (when I learn more) that I will get some use out of this book.

4 out of 5 stars Not Bad, But There are Newer and Better Books Out There.......2000-09-15

I liked this book. There are full page bleeds and chunks of fabric swatches throughout.

There's not much text in the book, just page after page of color textile designs illustrating molecular inspired prints, florals, and other whimsical patterns and colors appearing in clothing and home furnishings during the 1950s. It's a good, quick reference guide.

Schiffer has since come out with other textile reference books, adding a little more about the history of textile designs for this and other decades. If you need something quick and dirty, this title will do. If something more detailed is needed, check out the other textile titles instead.

If you are the kind of person who looks at photos in decorating magazines and thinks: this room would be nice if they got rid of all the cluttering knick knacks! or... what were they thinking covering that view with those curtains! then this book is for you. It covers the styles of: 1)Arts and Crafts 2)Cottage 3)Eclectic 4)Japanese 5)Minimalist & 6)Southwestern.

Each room of the house is represented with beautiful photographs demonstrating these styles. Even the garden is included. The book emphasizes serene rooms by use of clean walls and windows and parred down furnishings. Just the style of decorating I love and defenitely one of my favorite decorating books.

                                Book Description

This book deconstructs package redesign, providing vital information for the business owner, who has to make this all-important decision, as well as for the designer, who must execute the project.

Our society is susceptible to messages sent by cleverly designed packaging. Whereas a budget-minded consumer might be drawn to inexpensive-looking boxes, someone looking for a pure, organic line of cosmetics would be attracted to upscale black-and-gold embossed packages. Designs use many tactics to grab attention. This book walks readers through the various approaches to packaging design so business people and designers can choose the right strategy for their products and audiences.

This book is so filled with adventure and intrigue that you just can't put it down. Jake Conrad is superb in his weaving the life of this remarkable character, Yellowsnake, from his life on a reservation to the jungles of Vietnam. Yellowsnake was taught well in the ways of his great Commanche herritage and went on to be a super Warrior for the battles of Vietnam, His physical strength and abilities, keen mind and his will to get the job done with whatever it takes, make him a true super hero. He finds a place in the mighty Suprstitions Mtns. of Arizona to rest his body and soul and to wait for yet another call from the C.I.A. Yellowsnake was truly one of the best tools the U.S. had.

This book would make a super movie, think of the many sequels! I would hope Conrad will give us more of this wonderfuly exciting character.
