Reflections on the death of a porcupine and other essays
D. H Lawrence Manufacturer: Centaur Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Unknown Binding ASIN: B0006D91W4 |
Book Description
This volume contains what Lawrence himself called "philosophicalish" essays written in the decade 1915-25. The topics range from politics to nature, from religion to education; the tone from lighthearted humor to mordant wit, to spiritual meditation. For all these contrasts, however, the essays share many of the underlying themes of the mature Lawrence: "Be thyself" could be the volume's motto. As far as possible, this edition restores what Lawrence wrote before typists, editors, and compositors made the extensive alterations that have been followed in all previous editions of the texts--on occasion entire passages removed by mistake or for reasons of censorship have been recovered. The introduction describes the genesis, textual history, and reception of the essays; notes offer help with allusions and other difficult points. Several incomplete and unpublished essays are reproduced in an appendix.

back jacket summary.......2006-03-04
one of the weaker Darkover novels.......2003-12-12
This novel is the story of the duchy of Hammerfell and the result of its ancient blood feud with neighboring Storn. The novel opens with the aging (40 something) Duke of Hammerfell taking Ermine as a wife. She gives birth to twin boys. When they are perhaps a year old, there is an attack by Ardrin of Storn. Their home is destroyed, and their father murdered. Ermine escapes, but gets separated from the man carrying the younger son, Conn. Each boy is raised believing that they are the only surviving heir to Hammerfell. Alastair is raised by his mother in the Hastur capital city of Thendara. Conn is raised by Markos, a family retainer, in the mountains of Hammerfell.
This is the story of twins, separated at a young age, and their attempt to regain the duchy of Hammerfell from their ancient enemy of Storn. The two are reunited eighteen years later, and what could have/should have been a major conflict in the book is shuffled to the side with minimal contention between Conn and Alastair. This book is as much of a romance as the adventure that it hinted at being.
I like the Darkover series, but this is perhaps the worst of the books that I have read so far. There is very little actual conflict (even though it had such a great set-up), and what conflict there was got resolved with so little fuss that it hardly seemed worth it. I would recommend this book only if you were looking to read all of the Darkover novels. As each book stands on its own, there is no reason to read this to complete your understanding of the story, and this should certainly not be the first book you read if you are starting the series. It's just not that good.
Weak? Yes. Terrible? No. Enjoyable? I thought so........2000-10-05
It is not the best Darkover story, and not one I'd advise starting off with.
However, for those familiar with the setting, it's an enjoyable tale, perhaps on par with _Star of Danger_: fun, light reading in a familiar world.

The Dark Border - King Chondos' Ride.......2003-11-12
But if you need the sequel (and you will!) you'll need to get your hands on "The Gathering Of Heroes".
While "The Lost Prince" focused more on the events of the twin princes, and slightly on some military leaders, this novel tends to reverse the situation. You still get your heroics in the many different battles fought, lost and won, however I found the war to be slightly less gripping than the escapism of Chondos.
The beauty of these books are the depth. You can read them several times, and always be enamored as much as the first time you read it. One beautiful aspect is that Paul has created situations where conflict arises in places where (under different circumstances) friendship ought to exist.
Istvan (the Archer) Di'Vega, hero of the school of the five swords and Martos, student of Istvan's long and dear friend, are placed in charge of armies that war against each other, both knowing the futility of the situation, both being in total awe of the other, and both knowing that the evil force across the border are unnervingly still - as if they were allowing the war to continue.
But when they finally meet the circumstances are so outrageous that they battle each other for their life.
There is no third book!.......2003-06-17
"I wrote the ending first," Paul once said, "after reading 'The Defence of Guenevre.' The book was written to lead to the ending."
Paul refers to the poem by William Morris. The Defence of Guenevre" The poem ends with Arthur's courtiers straining to hear an approaching sound:
"Her cheeks grew crimson, as the headlong speed
Of the roan charger drew all men to see
The knight who came was Launcelot in good need."
The deliberate understatement is stronger than any melodrama. Nor is anything more needed. Aside from the fact that Morris could count on his Victorian readers to know that Guenevre would be rescued, the arrival of a champion is enough to complete the poem. In her defence, Guenevre complains that she is unfairly damned because she was given a choice between two mighty lovers. Put on trial by one of those lovers, she is in despair. The coming of Launcelot, the second one, gives her hope.
With that in mind, can there truly be any doubt as to the outcome?
Will continuosly suck you into the intensity.......1999-07-23

The Essential Titus Burckhardt is the much-anticipated collection of writings from Titus Burckhardt, one of the great Perennialist authors of the 20th century, edited by the world's foremost expert on the Burckhardt body of works, William Stoddart. Burckhardt's writings are characterized by (1) a profound grounding in the Perennial Philosophy and integral metaphysics, (2) a remarkable history of contacts with traditional peoples and their civilizations, (3) a true artist's knowledge of and love for traditional art, (4) a scholar's knowledge of diverse source materials not accessible to most modern seekers, and (5) a gifted teacher's ability to make all of these things understandable and of deep interest to readers. This collection will bring together many of Burckhardt's most representative writings that will amply demonstrate these qualities. The editor of the collection, Dr. William Stoddart, is himself a writer within the Perennialist school, and is perhaps best known for his concise outlines of many the world's great religious traditions as well as for his many excellent translations into English of many of the works of Schuon and Burckhardt. This essential collection of Burckhardt's writings is illustrated by numerous black and white drawings, and sixteen pages of full color photograhsCustomer Reviews:

Not Bad, But There are Newer and Better Books Out There.......2000-09-15
There's not much text in the book, just page after page of color textile designs illustrating molecular inspired prints, florals, and other whimsical patterns and colors appearing in clothing and home furnishings during the 1950s. It's a good, quick reference guide.
Schiffer has since come out with other textile reference books, adding a little more about the history of textile designs for this and other decades. If you need something quick and dirty, this title will do. If something more detailed is needed, check out the other textile titles instead.
