Book Description
A new volume of three novels–previously published separately by Anchor–by Naguib Mahfouz, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature. Together with
The Beggar, The Thief and The Dogs, and Autumn Quail (published by Anchor in December 2000), these novels represent a comprehensive collection of Mahfouz’s artful meditations on post-revolution Egypt. Diverse in style and narrative technique, they render a nuanced and universally resonant vision of modern life in the Middle East.
Respected Sir, “a latter-day
Bleak House in Arabic” (The New York Times), revisits a familiar theme–vaulting ambition–in a powerful and religious metaphor.
Wedding Song, “one of Mahfouz’s most enjoyable works” (The Chicago Tribune), is a psychological drama, focusing on how four very different kinds of minds apprehend and reckon with the realities that surround them. The Search is a powerful, lurid, and compelling story of lust, greed, and murder.

Three Egyptian tales.......2006-12-15
In Respected Sir we get to know the son of a cart driver in Cairo, Othman Bayyumi. He starts working as a clerk at the eighth grade in the government and ends up at the splendid position of His Excellency the Director General. Though Othman shows great will and great ambition and thus has a successful career he remains a lonely man till the end of his life. Mr Mahfouz shows that a certain cold-heartedness is necessary for a man to be respected for his piety, diligence and rectitude and the price to pay for such a way is solitude.
Wedding Song is the sad tale of Abbas Karam Younis, actor and later playwright, who within a few months disowns his disgraced parents, marries Tahia and has a son called Taher. Then Abbas decides to write his play called Afrah al-Qubbah using his imagination to create a protagonist through which he can confess and do penance. He thus uses art as a means of battle and rebellion against people born and bread in sin. The structure of the plot is original: the same events are told in 4 chapters by 4 different characters - Tariq Ramun, a fellow actor working at the same theatre as Abbas, Karam Younis, Abbas's father, Halima al-Kabsh, Abbas's mother and finally Abbass's own account.
In The Search Saber's mother Basima Omran is an ageing prostitute who has just spent five years in prison in Alexandria. Saber has never seen his father yet he knows his name which is printed on his birth certificate: Sayed el-Rheimy. After his mother's death, Saber decides to try to find his father in Cairo. During his long search Saber realises that it is his fate to follow his mother's footsteps and soon deceit and crime tarnish his life.
Hidden Jewel.......2002-02-09
Mahfouz is one of the greatest contemporary writers we have overlooked. An anecdote I want to share. I was diligently browsing through the literature/fiction section at a local bookstore and looking for Mahfouz. Disappointed. Looked in the world literature section and again disappointed. No luck in the translated literature section either. Why would a representative Egyptian writer be such inadvertently left out? I spoke to the info desk about Mahfouz and magically, a whole section that featured Mahfouz and his works were set up a few days later!
Respected Sir/Wedding Song/The Search came out just before the winter break. The new edition consists of three novels by Mahfouz that demonstrate unique writing style. I was quickly drawn into the book after flipping over ten pages or so. Mahfouz writes very succinctly and elegantly. His plots usually begin with a very usual setting. But there is also an element of suspense. You will keep on reading not because you know something is going to happen, but becuase things combine to hold you fast.
Respected Sir talks about how a government clerk sacrifices all comfort and breaks all family ties to ascend in rank. His eternal goal is that he will become the Director of Administration (Level 1) in the government. The narrative authenticates how we desire for power and attain such power against all odds.
Wedding Song involves a whole different writing style. The story features a montage, re-telling of the same story in the persepctives of 4 characters. Psychologucal suspense dominates the mood of the piece as, the main characters, twist back and forth between virtuality and reality. You will unveil the "true story" that was masked and concealed by what the characters perceive the story to be.
The Search tells of the story of a criminal searching for his long-lost father. The sexual desire, the filler of loneliness, and fear interweaves with his longing for his father. Mahfouz has wriiten three brilliant pieces that delineates human emotions. Hidden jewel in modern/contemporary literature.

Book Description
1843 is the last year of the world, according to Elias Fitcher, a charismatic preacher in the Finger Lakes district of New York State. Hes established a utopian community on an estate outside the town of Jeckylls Glen, where the faithful wait, work, and pray for the world to end.ernelia, Amy, and Catherine Charter are three young townswomen whose father falls under the Reverend Fitchers hypnotic sway. In their old house, where ghostly voices whisper from the walls, the girls are ruled by their stepmother, who is ruled by the fiery preacher in turn. Determined to spend Eternity as a married man, Fitcher casts his eye on Vernelia, and before long the two are wed. Living on the mans estate, separated from her family, its not long before Vern learns the extent of her husbands dark side. Its rumored that hes been married before, though what became of those wives she does not know. Perhaps the secret lies in the locked room at the very top of the housethe single room that the Reverend Fitcher has forbidden to her.Inspired by the classic fairy tales Bluebeard and The Fitcher Bird, this dark fantasy is set in New York States Burned-Over District, at its time of historic religious ferment. All three Charter sisters will play their part in the story of Fitchers Utopia: a story of faith gone wrong, and evil countered by one brave, true soul.
Customer Reviews:
Eh...........2006-07-03
This is a retelling of the folk tail of Bluebeard, a man who married and murders two sisters-until the third saves the day. Set in the 1800's with bluebeard being cast as a preacher who supposedly knows the date for the rapture this is a slightly haunting shallow fantasy novel.
I have no strong feelings about this book. It was ok, not great, not terrible. The plot was ok, the writing quite good, and the story well paced and played out-but still there is something quite different about this book.
This book reads like it is a short story. There is no real character development; a lot of major issues go unresolved in the story and the fantasy elements of this book are very vague. Much more could have been done with them, and with the crimes of Fitcher-the bluebeard. Because there is so little development early on it feels like the last 50 pages in the book were just jammed full of the info and hints we should have been getting since page one. The effect is that the ending is abrupt, and does not have any where near the closure it needed.
Long story short-it's an ok book. If you really like short fantasy stories or vague and dreamy books then you'll probably like this. For me, it was just ok.
Three stars.
Disturbing.......2005-12-30
I'd like to start this review off by saying that "Fitcher's Brides" was extremely well written. Mr. Frost definitely has a way with words and the scripture passages included were on the dot. However, I found the story to be extremely morbid and disturbing. Even now I have a hard time pushing the gory descriptions from my mind. Having never read either "Bluebeard" or "The Fitcher Bird" I cannot say as to whether or not "Fitcher's Brides" is a good retelling. But, if you enjoy reading about the devil posing as a most holy reverend and preaching that he knows the date of Judgment Day and killing his wives for succumbing to Eve's curiosity and in the end good somewhat triumphing over evil..then this is the book for you.
Gorgeously Dark Masterpiece.......2005-06-01
This amazing story is based on "Bluebeard" and "Fitcher's Bird", two dark fairy tales that teach the reader about the most evil sides of human nature.
The story here centers around three sisters who live with a harsh stepmother and extremely gullible father, both of whom have fallen under the spell of an evangelistic preacher and obey his every word. When the preacher, Reverend Fitcher, claims that the world will soon end, the three unhappy sisters are forced to move with their family to a new home in a secluded town where, according to Fitcher, they will all await the end of the world together. For a while, things seem to go well: the sisters adjust to their new life and begin to appreciate the seemingly peaceful community that Fitcher has created. Then one night, Fitcher announces at a community meeting that he wishes to marry and he chooses Vern, the eldest of the sisters, for his wife. Vern's parents are thrilled at the honor, of course, so the arrangements are hastily made and the marriage takes place shortly afterward. At first, Fitcher seems to honor and trust Vern; he gives her a ring of keys to every room in the house and tells her she may enter all except one: the room in the attic. For a while she resists the temptation, until her husband's strange behavior prompts her to take matters into her own hands and explore the forbidden room. There, she discovers her husband's true nature, horrors beyond her worst nightmares... and her own terrifying fate.
Reading this incredible story was like looking into the deepest part of evil's black heart; it is the most unbelievable book I've ever read. I highly recommend it to anyone that loves retold fairy tales and/or horror stories. Be warned, though: if you don't usually read horror books, I don't recommend you start with this one. It is incredibly dark and, love it or hate it, it will haunt you for the rest of your life.
The Brides of Death.......2004-11-18
A widower, with a little help from his cold-hearted new wife, has fallen under the spell of Elias Fitcher, an apocalyptic preacher who predicts the world will end within the year. Packing up all his earthly belongings, and his three daughters--romantic Vernelia, neurotic Amy, and practical, skeptical Kate--he and his wife move to a tiny village in upstate New York to await the end of days. There, the charming, charismatic, and utterly horrifying Fitcher takes a shine to Vernelia, and sweeps her off her feet in a whirlwind courtship.
It says on the very cover that it's a Bluebeard story, so I'm not spoiling much to say that Vernelia goes mysteriously missing, and Fitcher then marries Amy. When Amy, too, vanishes, it's up to Kate to find out what has happened and stop Fitcher's horrible spree. There's a storm brewing, of course, and the plot goes from atmospherically creepy to nail-biting as the storm rises to fever-pitch. I could have sworn I heard thunder when I discovered Kate's middle name, when she stood up to him as no one had previously done, when she raced against time to stop him from adding her to his collection. Does she survive? Read and see.
Gregory Frost here gives us an unforgettable rendition of one of our darkest fairy tales, a heroine to root for, and a truly terrifying villain. An added bonus is Terri Windling's introduction. Her introductions are always a treat, but she's getting even better, as evidenced first by the fascinating one for White as Snow, and now by the essay she wrote for this novel. She points out, most interestingly, that Perrault's famous version blames Bluebeard's murders on his wives' curiosity and disobedience, but that the older version give us heroines, like Kate, who save themselves by their willingness to question authority and look for answers.
The Fallen Brides.......2004-04-08
Firstly, let me say this. The book really isn't all that bad. It just really didn't end up as one of my favorites. I thought that was rather too bad, because I was excited about reading, one of the less retold fairy tale stories
I thought the story was slow passed and I didn't like the fact that abuse was such a key plot line in the story.
I honestly don't mind such stories, but I just didn't really care for the way that it was represented.
I found it very little entertaining and thought the writer switched writing sequences quiet a bit.
Not the worst retelling fairy tales that I have ever read, but not the best either.

Young Adult writes a Young Adult book.......2005-09-06
A great Sci/Fi suspense book for young adults ages 10-18 (and older). Great dialogue and both funny and suspenseful plot twists. Written by a 15 year old, this is a very sophisticated story about a group of families that are selected by lottery to be evacuated to a underwater habitat (Afrizo is Greek for Bubble) to escape a world wide holocaust. The "end" comes too soon and the families are not well prepared and a lot of the habitat is not fully functional. Rose, the main character, rises to the challenge and takes the disfunctional band of refugees to their full potential and beyond.

A Great Glimpse into a 20th Century Prophet.......2003-08-27
For the last fifteen years of his life, Vance Havner mentored me, encouraged me and showed me what it was like to walk with God. It is sad that his publisher apparently has so little interest in his 39 books. About the only way you can find his books now is through a used book site. This is a good glimpse into his style and passion. I've been privileged to recently compile a book of Havner's material and hope that the interest in this great preacher/ prophet will grow so that his books will one day all be reprinted.
Great messages from an old-fashioned man of the Word!.......2000-04-12
Vance Havner started preaching at 14, and didn't stop til he went to glory! That alone is a great legacy, but Uncle Vance also preached some of the greatest messages I have ever heard and read. He was the most homespun of country preachers, possessing a southern charm that always belied his great intellect and persuasive power. A preacher friend of mine has said it well: "Old Vance was half Charles Spurgeon and half Billy Sunday with the voice of Will Rogers."
These selections are a great intro to a good ol' man of God. Check out the autobiographical "Journey from Jugtown," the powerful "Jesus is Lord," and the still smokin' message on Gamaliel.
GREAT stuff!
One of the most humorous and pungent preachers ever.......1999-02-05
Those who heard him will never forget him. His messages, which he almost read word for word, were spell binding. There were hundreds of statements that have been quoted thousands of times. This book captures, for posterity, the very best of Vance Havner's unique messages. Those who never heard this man must read these for there is no one who has or could ever duplicate his style and passion.

Great Recipes.......2007-08-21
This is a fantastic cook book. There are photos of each recipe, as well as at the beginning of each section, the recipes are sorted by time taken to prepare, with a picture and brief description of the recipe. Even at the beginning of the book, there are recipes grouped by idea. It is so easy to find something to cook plus you know how long this will take and what the finished product is supposed to look like. My husband and I have cooked the prawn gumbo, chicken pot pie, brownies, gingerbread and so many other recipes from this book. Everything has turned out to be absolutely brilliant. Nothing has ever disappointed.

Book Description
Art Deco is a term used to define a period in the 1930s whereby designers applied geometric designs and machine age materials to create a futuristic look to home furnishings and decor. The close to 300 full-colour photos of furniture, coffee and tea services, bar items, radios, cigarette cases and ashtrays, and living room decor capture the feeling of this period of geometric simplicity.
Customer Reviews:
Fun little book, and very helpful.......2002-01-07
This is a fun little book. It's being little is my only complaint. For the price I would like to have had a bit more. However, it does have a lot of color photos nicely reproduced so you can really see the designs.
It has a nice mix of furniture, accessories and even appliances from that period. Books that showcase museum pieces are nice to look at but "Affordable Art Deco" is for the rest of us -- those who want to create a Deco look in our homes. The authors give an idea of what things should cost, which is very helpful. For instance, two lighted art glass cigarette stands should run $75-$150, depending on condition. I've seen the same stands at an antique store priced at $400. I thought that excessive but now I have backup.
I certainly don't regret purchasing "Affordable Art Deco" and would recommend it to anyone out there shopping for the real deal, e.g.; Not just looking at it in a museum.

Customer Reviews:
A decent idea book, but not a good instruction book.......2007-02-07
If you are looking for some ideas on what to do with the basic vest, _Two Hour Vests_ by Mary Jo Hiney is a decent book. But it's usefulness is very limited.
On the plus side, it shows six basic designs and ideas on what can be done with each different type of design. There are full-page pictures of 16 vests made with the different designs, and another 16-17 vests that are shown in artists' drawings.
The ideas are interesting, and the use of fabric and trims is well-done.
On the minus side, the included patterns are rudimentary at best, and must be taken to a copy center for enlargement; the patterns only come in small, medium, and large; and there are no tips on choosing or modifying a vest if you are a not an off-the-rack small-medium-or-large person.
A final major irritation for me is there are no pictures of a real vest BEING WORN by a real person. All of the photographs show vests on hangers in nice background settings. That, combined with the artists' drawings being more impressionistic than realistic, makes the book feel like it was self-compiled and self-published by someone who is very proud of what they sew but doesn't get out much.
It's a good coffee table book for the intermediate to advanced hobby sewer, but I wouldn't recommend it for any use besides that.
Two big problems!.......2002-06-22
One problem: the title. I am an experienced seamstress. It would take longer than two hours to enlarge the patterns, prepare the fabric, and construct a garment from this book. Probably much longer.
The other problem: the patterns. The book shows attractive style variations on patterns that are printed in the book. The instructions say to enlarge the printed patterns by 285%. This is inconvenient, but there is also no size chart to tell you what the size designations really mean. The patterns are called Small, Medium, and Large, but that tells you nothing. There are no body measurements to refer to. There are also no finished garment measurements that would give the reader a clue. You must enlarge the pattern, then measure it to find out which-if any-size will fit. The book also says nothing about pattern adjustments for different figure types. Most of these styles would need some changes to fit full figured or tall women.
Although some of the vests pictured in the book are very appealing, you would need advanced sewing knowledge to get them to fit.
A Great Book!.......2001-05-01
If you want to expand your wardrobe with vests, this is the book. It has patterns for six basic vests with front and back pictures of each and lots of ways to vary them. The pictures and drawings really help to stimulate your imagination as to how different materials and treatments might look. There are also good basic instructions. I had no problems with getting the patterns enlarged at an office supply store.
How to cut the costs of enlargements.......2001-01-06
This book contains a wealth of info and ideas. However, I did find it a bit difficult to find a copy center that could do the 285% enlargement. The enlargement cost $10.00 but a second one cost less than $3.00. I traced the basic vest onto an 8 1/2"X11" piece of bond paper using a good technical pen so that my line weight was consistent. I then traced pockets and anything else that would fit. By having two prints made I had one for myself and one for a gift (given with the book). Now that I know what size to go for I will use a projector to scale up tracings for the other vests. If you don't have your own projector it is possible to use one from a library. There are four vests with variations.
Lovely vests, lots of good ideas, but not worth the effort........2000-08-04
I purchased this book because of the lovely designs and what appeared to be well thought out instructions and was greatly put off by the lack of patterns I could readily use. By this I mean patterns I can copy to scale or order--and since I can't measure the patterns themselves I don't know if they'll fit anyway. I visited several copy centers today and learned that having these patterns reproduced at 285% is not as simple as the author makes it seem. While I may wind up keeping the book for ideas, I'm irritated enough that I may return it on principle. Too bad, Ms. Hiney would have had a really good thing if she'd gone the extra mile.
