Book Description
The basis for the classic film starring Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman, Saratoga Trunk unfolds the story of Clio Dulaine, an ambitious Creole beauty who more than meets her match in Clint Maroon, a handsome Texan with a head for business -- and an eye for beautiful young women. Together they do battle with Southern gentry and Eastern society, but in their obsession to acquire all they've ever wanted, they fail to realize they already have all they'll ever need -- each other.

amazing for its time.......2004-08-26
_Saratoga Trunk_ tells a love story while evoking all the richness of three eras--Paris and New Orleans of the 1850s-1870s, the Gilded Age (or the Robber Baron period), and the early 20th century. It's the story of Clio Dulaine and Clint Maroon, who begin an unconventional relationship in an unforgettable scene bursting with detail.
That detail--immediate and sensory as well as historical and nuanced--makes the novel as effective as the best period romances, because it supports the excellent characterization to create a believable story from improbable elements (e.g., half-Black illegitimate girl educated in France, dwarf servant, cowboy dandy in New Orleans, they travel to Saratoga Springs in upstate New York and meet the movers and shakers of the Gilded Age, etc.).
Masterful prose--sparely elegant at times and incomparably lush at others--combined with sharply-drawn detail and fully rounded characters leads to a truly pleasurable experience. I completely recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a writer from the Golden Age of 20th-century American literature at the top of her form. Even _So Big_, for which the same author won a Pulitzer in 1924, is merely the equal of this novel.
Love and Revenge Story.......2000-09-25
Ferber tales the story of Clio Dulaine -- an illegitimate French girl who comes to New Orleans after residing in Paris for most of her life. The story is set in the mid 1800's. Clio and her entourage include: Kaka, a voodoo-like nurse maid and her colorful friend Cupide -- a dwarf. Clio's ultimately goal is to reveal to her upper class blood grandparents who she is and blackmail them.
Clio is successful at this but while scheming she falls in love with Clint Maroon -- a flamboyant cowboy from the rough country Texas. They clash with each other, but ultimately there is a bond. When the scheme with Clio's grandparents forces them to move on they decide to go to Saratoga, New York. Saratoga, at this period of time, was a vacation resort area where many rich people spent their time. Clio schemes for more money by chumming up with the plentiful, wealthy bachelors. However, her bond and feelings for Clint causes problems.
This story was interesting in the fact that it reveals what it must have been like to live in New Orleans at this period of time. In addition, Ferber paints a luxurious picture of the resort-like community of Saratoga. Clint is quite a character and the two of them complement one another (Clio reminded me of Scarlett O'Hara in many ways). While Clio was a hard one to like, the book does keep one interested. I felt Ferber's main point was that there may have been armed robberies and anarchy in the west at that period of time, but the east had its share of crime. Graft, economic warfare (even leading to violence), and greed nearly ruined the country. Overall, another interesting book that teaches something about the American social aspects of living in the middle/late 1800's.
Revenge, Money and love........1999-10-31
This a tale of Clio Dulaine, a young woman who see's her mistress mother become an "ugly, broken hearted woman" by her father's wife. She goes to her old home town of New Orleans by seeking revenge for her mother's unhappiness and by ruining her dead father's wife's life by re-hashing the family scandal. While in New Orleans she meets a handsome Texan Cowboy, Clint Maroon. They have a stormy affair but she won't commit to him because she want's respectablity, comfort and money, something her mother did not have. Clint and Clio then go to Saratoga and meet Bart Van Steed, a millionaire, who owns railroads. She woo's Bart but all the time thinking of Clint. In the end Bart asks her to marry him but she sacrafices money and comfort to be with Clint.

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
A bizarre cross-universe game between Mxyzptlk and the Joker, it seems. Batman and Superman are harassed and kept off balance by an Ultimate Marvel Universe satire, and two Bizarros, including a Batman.
In the end, this appears to all be a plot to free Bat-Mite and release Darkseid from the Source Wall, as well as get Batman and Superman to be more trusting.
They get to through in a Batwoman, a Superwoman, and a Supermen and Batman through the ages. Lots of fun for the artists, presumably.
Somewhat incomprehensible and whacky.
Don't skip it..........2007-05-16
I'm not quite sure why so many people have a problem with this story. Sure it's crazy, but considering the main "villains" involved, it should be nothing else. I don't think a lot of people really "get" this story, which is so crazy...it works.
There's a ton of characters involved, and some twists to old favorites. I loved The Maximums as an Avengers parody, great stuff there. Bizzaro and Batzarro are great as unlikely heroes, although after awhile it can be a chore reading their text. It was cool to see Loeb handle them just as he does Supes and Bats though.
Overall this is a fun read, if you take it too seriously, you'll end up jaded like the other people who've written reviews on it. It looks very likely that Loeb and McGuinness just wanted to have a good time with their last S/B arc. It's nice to have some comics left these days that don't take themselves so seriously. It's also worth noting that this arc again builds on the relationship between Superman and Batman, which Loeb is great at. I recommend it, don't listen to the hate.
Jeph Loeb's swan song, thankfully.......2007-05-01
Up until this storyarc, I pretty much enjoyed Jeph Loeb's run on the high selling Superman/Batman series, but sadly, Loeb's final arc on the title is just loaded with plot holes and hard to understand. Vengeance finds a group called the Maximums hunting down Superman and Batman because they believe the two iconic heroes murdered one of their own. Naturally, this is not the case, and soon enough Bizarro is on the scene, along with "Batzarro" (I kid you not), the Joker, and Mr. Mxyzptlk. What happens next in Vengeance is incredibly hard to follow as Loeb appears to shift things into high gear, but things never take off. His renditions of Supes and Bats are more wooden here than ever before, and the story inconsistencies and additional appearances out of nowhere just boggle the mind. Ed McGuinness, who teamed with Loeb when Superman/Batman launched, returns to lend his pencil work with Dexter Vines on inks, may be too cartoony for some, but it's undoubtedly the highlight of this TPB. This ended up being Loeb's last arc on the title before taking work once again with Marvel, so hopefully the otherwise talented and celebrated writer has had his batteries recharged.
Poor Storyline.......2007-02-26
I loved the first two arcs of the Superman/Batman series - they were superb. The first of those, "Public Enemies", was made by the same team that created this, but its hard to believe by reading it. Loeb weaves a ridiculous plot that doesn't really do anything except introduce a variety of characters into an absurd storyline. The only redeeming feature of this whole thing is the artwork by McGuiness, which was excellent as usual. But it doesn't make it worth wasting time with this silly piece.
Great!!!.......2006-11-08
Great addition to the series. I wasnt too crazy about the story, but the number of different characters more than made up for it.

Genogoths. Since the time of Darwin, they have been the dark protectors of the X-gene, guarding humanity's next step in evolution and protecting lesser-powered mutants. Now, one of the Genogoths' inner circle is running for her life-and asking Generation X for help.
Customer Reviews:
Actually this is OK.......2002-10-22
One does not expect much of spin-offs of TV-comic series (in this case 'The_X-men'), but this is actually pretty well written, in all respects. Nice to read, in a bumbling, happy-go-lucky kind of way. Somewhat reminiscent of Xanth, sort off.
Genogoths: Fantasy or Reality.......2001-10-22
I truly enjoy reading Generation X. Because of there unpredictablity as teenagers and what types of situations they can get themselfs into. It hit more towards reality at times than fantasy. Genogoths really makes you think about the future and the past. The way certain groups have successfully round-up people so they can conduct experiments, it kind of reminded me of what had happened to certain nationalities and races during the WWII era. Plus I would put it past anyone in this day in age to try the same thing! This book I highly recommend to all Generation X followers, and if you are trying to follow this band of mutants. Make sure you read the first two books first, it would be worth your time.
Chamber Rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2000-09-29
I was waiting for this book for so long.I wasn't disappointed with this book.I thought this is a pretty good sequl to "Crossroads".I only had one complaint; there wasn't that much of my favorite Gen-Xers;Artie and Leech. A tip for future novel writers of Generation X,include more of Artie and Leech.

Clear explanation of the Dzogchen teachings and practices that reawaken and establish us in our true nature.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book on Dzogchen.......2005-01-04
Chogyal Namkhai Norbu is a true master of dzogchen. This book is an excellent overview of dzogchen and in CNN's style it gets to the point and really opens your eyes. The only caution I have is that there is a small amount of buddhist jargon that gets repeated throughout the book. If you are familiar with the terms you appreciate him using them, but if not just write them down (there aren't many) and you will have no problems.
Introductory text.......2004-11-29
This is one of the first books I had read on Dzogchen. I think it's a nice introduction and it includes some key concepts, but it's not as good as some of the author's other works--especially the advanced book entitled "The Supreme Source" which is most excellent. I also prefer "The Mirror" and "The Cycle of Day and Night." Norbu is, I think, recognized as one of today's Dzogchen Masters. However, this short book simply cannot and does not do the subject justice. I would also recommend the view of Tulku Urgyen and his sons Drubwang Tsokni and Chokyi Nyima who have published a number of fine Dzogchen works.
Complex simplicity.......2004-09-06
I dunno. Maybe it is the innate complexity of the subject matter, maybe something is lost in translation from Tibetan to Italian and then to English, maybe its impossible to treat such a profound topic in 130 pages, or maybe it is just me -- but after reading this book I don't feel I know much more about Dzogchen than I did before.
Although this is the first book I have read about Dzogchen, over the last 17 years I have read hundreds of works on Buddhism (mostly Theravada and Zen but also some Tantra) and practiced in several monasteries in America and Japan. So I feel I should have gotten more out of this than I did.
The author is clearly sincere and knowledgeable about his topic, and the topic itself seemingly has much to offer, but I found this volume unable to answer the simple beginner's question: "what is Dzogchen?" The language seems highly ambiguous and contradictory in many places, the organization and presentation of the material is unclear, and the book is peppered with images that are not discussed and seemingly have no relationship to the text.
The book is not a total disaster. The author has some success in showing how Dzogchen differs from other aspects of Buddhism, and spends some time discussing "the base" or true nature of mind. But many more questions are raised than answered, at least in my mind. He also emphasizes the need for a teacher and direct experience. So maybe its simply that Dzogchen is too complex to be discussed in such a short, introductory format. At least I can say this book raised my interest, and I'll be seeking out more answers on this abstruse but fascinating corner of Buddhism.
Wisdom From A Master.......2004-01-10
As a newcomer to Dzogchen I find this book invaluable. Norbu Rinpoche articulates the ineffable. His emphasis on going beyond the limitations of any particular dogma or tradition is also so refreshing and, in my experience, unusual that I knew I was reading the words of a master. The book is inspiring. It made me want to put its teachings into practice. It's also highly practical and written to be completely clear. Norbu Rinpoche's unadorned, down-to-earth way of communicating sublime and subtle concepts is wonderful. His reputation is superb and this book is a good example of why he is so highly regarded as a master teacher. I cannot recommend it highly enough. It's just great.
"The next best thing to being there".......2001-08-28
As someone who finds himself practicing without the benefit of a teacher or master, I found this overview of Dzogchen to be helpful in clarifying what it is I am trying to do, and why. It is experience-based, concise and inviting. The first part lays the groundwork for understanding what Dzogchen is and is not. The second part is a brief guide to its practice.

Full of New Ideas!.......2006-08-24
I'm addicted to Christmas books & magazines, so I wasn't sure if I'd really find anything new or unique in this book. This is the first Gooseberry Patch book I've ever looked through, so I can't comment on how it compares with other G.P. editions, but I did find many cute and clever craft ideas and recipes that were new to me. One idea I plan to try is the Framed Hankie Card Holder that uses a wood frame and 3 Christmas-themed hankies to create pockets to hold received cards (sounds odd, but it's cute). Other ideas I liked for my home using red & white fabrics and holiday-themed tea towels include a Quilt, Tea Towel Gift Bags, Table Runner & Chair Back Covers. A clever gift for kids to make is a covered chip can filled with chocolate-dipped potato chips (the kind of chips that all have the same shape and line up in a tall can). Lots of snowflake-themed gifts, a few pet gifts, wrapping and card ideas. Plus, there are dozens of great, new recipes for food gifts, holiday meals and entertaining (hot drink mixes, decadent desserts, soups, and some new side dish combinations).

Weller Collector's Reference.......2000-05-25
This book was very helpful to me - I just started collecting Weller pottery since the beginning of this year. Although this book couldn't possible have every piece of Weller pottery photographed or drawn it is still a very useful and appreciated guide for any Weller collector. I am very pleased with my copy and would recommend it to anyone considering starting to collect Weller pottery or interested in placing a "ballpark" value on their Weller collectibles. There are some beautiful Weller pieces out there available for the discerning collector - with this book you are an educated collector. Good luck and enjoy collecting some Weller pottery - maybe our paths will cross?
Excellent resource for the Weller collector.......1998-08-22
This is the only book I know of that is dedicated solely to Weller pottery. It includes a very detailed history of Wellers conception and demise. A section on the prominent Weller artisans and all the known markings of the pottery is very helpful.
The main reason I bought this book though is for the color photographs of the different Weller lines. They are beautiful and it makes identifying pieces much easier. Besides a copy for myself I also gave one to my Mother-in-law for her birthday. We both love it!

Ribbons and wedding accessories are a natural pairing, and ribbon doyen Ellie Joos knows how to wrest spectacular flowers and bows out of a few yards of the stuff. Yet despite the elaborate appearance of her creations, she manages to keep the how-tos clear and (mostly) fairly easy, especially with the frequent use of premade craft-store flowers. She offers a nice selection of headpieces, garters, shoe and glove decorations, purses, keepsake boxes, centerpieces, pew bows, boutonnieres, corsages, wreaths, and favors, plus less common items like adornments for the cake server and champagne glasses, a lacy parasol, a unity candle, even a beautifully decorated rustic broom to celebrate the African American tradition of "jumping the broom." Most of the projects can be handled by the novice crafter, although some may take a fair amount of time and many will be a bit pricey--all that beautiful ribbon doesn't come cheap. Still, it's less expensive to make the items yourself than to buy them ready-made; plus, you can easily tailor them to suit your taste and color scheme. Woven throughout the more than 50 step-by-step instructions and pretty color photos are tidbits of wedding lore and charming engravings of Victorian weddings, as well as a brief wedding planner. A solid general techniques section details bow making, ribbon weaving, pinwheel folding, and some basic flower making. --Amy Handy
Book Description

Book Description
For many years Veronika van Duin has been able to see "over the river" experiencing spiritual dimensions and worlds hidden to the physical eye. With clairvoyant vision she has perceived angels and demonic beings, people who have died, and even events taking place in other parts of the world. But in 2002, with the passing of her mother Barbara Lipsker, the author's spiritual journeys became more concentrated and frequent, and she began to see people who had recently crossed the threshold of death, including the victims of an airplane disaster and a suicide bombing.
In A Rainbow Over the River, the author tells her remarkable story, from her earliest glimpses of the other side to her most recent excursions "over the river." In the second part of the book, she records an intensely moving diary of her mother's passing, rich in love, care, and profound understanding of suffering. She describes how, despite the sadness of losing their mother, Veronika's family see the death as a transition to a new existence and, ultimately, as a great festival of life. In the third section of the book she speaks of her mother's life as a pioneer of Camphill, a social movement that provides home and work for people with special needs. She also offers thoughts on birth and death, grief, healing, prayer, and the meaning of existence.
A Rainbow Over the River is a glorious celebration of life, illumined through a knowledge of death and the eternal nature of spirit.
