Book Description
On September 11, 2001 the world watched from the outside as thousands of people died. This novel portrays what it might have been like for those on the inside. The fear, the anguish, the heartache, and the human side of this tragedy are explored in this fictionalized account of the events of September 11.
It relates the other story: the human story. It tells what happened aboard the hijacked airplanes and inside the Twin Towers narrated from the point of view of those who lived the tragedy from the inside. Many will be surprised to see through their eyes the incredible events that occurred around them. It is the only book that reconstructs minute by minute what happened inside the first hijacked plane that crashed into the North Tower, and continues with the escape of the employees of the skyscrapers; all that narrated with lively prose and exciting action.
Come along with the pilots, flight attendants, passengers, and World Trade Center employees as they journey into what will turn out to be the last day of their lives. Surprise is guaranteed in this book that will stir deep emotion in the reader.
Customer Reviews:
A must-have 9/11 book!.......2003-09-30
I think this is the most original 9/11 book I've read. It has a completely different point of view than we are used to. We knew the events from the outside and remember what happened mixing it with later information. This book is a challenge because it transports the reader to the core of the events and to a time when nobody knew anything yet.
Everything seems to be well calculated in this novel. It doesn't miss details, because it doesn't try to be a complete report of everything that happened; it focuses on a representative part. (We cannot say that "Gone With the Wind" has a lot of missing data on Civil War: it tells a story, it isn't a history textbook.) It puts literary quality before quantity of data. In addition, it's a short but dense book, because all the facts are true, even most of the details.
This book tells what happened aboard Flight 11 (the first hijacked and crashed), and not aboard the others, simply because it happened the same tragedy; the differences are external dates as departure times, crash sites, people's names and airplane models. It would be an unnecessary repetition and it would detract from continuity. On the other hand, it does mention the other hijacked planes and Pentagon, even it includes as appendix a timeline of the events, drawings and tables with technical details.
Yes, the WTC part is described through one man's eyes: the main character, and this is an extraordinary perspective from which the human experience can be truly told. The characters are introduced briefly because this is an action novel, not a psychological novel, where there in no place for character descriptions.
Not Impressed.......2003-09-07
The author did a good job describing the events that unfolded on 9/11, but crammed it into a 100 page book. The only plane that was mentioned in any detail was flight #11. And the WTC tragedy was described pretty much through one man's eyes. The characters are introduced very briefly, leaving the reader with no real attachment to them. I think the concept of the book is good but unfortunately, the author came up short.
A lot of missing data.......2003-08-23
Well, the book is written well. It tells the story of the flight # 11 and what happened aboard, plus what happened inside the Towers. On the other hand, I would expect to find some other details, like for example what happened on the other flights. There is nothing about the flights 77, 93 and 175. Also, not a word about the Pentagon. I understand this is a novel, documentary, but still a novel and the writer can choose to write about anything he wants, but for me, a lot of details were missing.
Customer Reviews:
Pretty decent.......2006-04-25
This was not my favorite book in the Thundercats series, but it was still pretty good. The other books have gotten a lot of flack for being more edgy and adult in nature, but I don't agree. I think they have done a good job aging the series for its older fans. The ending sucks of this book. Sure, they beat the bad guys, but the final page or two is nearly the dumbest thing I've ever heard of in a comic. I still suggest reading this though, but its up to you wether or not you resell it.
Book Description
Based on the popular new TV show on Cartoon Network, Harry finds a treasure map, and hurries off to Dino World to find the treasure! From the Wishing Well to Moo Mountain, the dinosaurs help to find the hidden surprises. But who could have hidden them there? With a steady rhythm, repetitive words, and lots of rhyme, this tale fits right into the Bright and Early line and will be great for reading aloud and reading alone.
Customer Reviews:
Harry and the dinosaurs.......2007-08-23
This book is just another example of the fun a four year old can have in dinoworld! My son really relates to Harry and plays for hours on end as if he is there too.

Book Description
For every Aboriginal child taken away by the state governments in Australia, there was at least one white family intimately involved in their life. One Bright Spot is about one of these families--about "Ming", a Sydney wife and mother who hired Aboriginal domestic servants in the 20s and 30s, and became an activist against the Stolen Generations policy--the removal of Aboriginal children by the Australian government. Her story, reconstructed by her great-granddaughter, tells of a remarkable, yet forgotten, shared history.
Customer Reviews:
5 STARS - Important Aboriginal History Book.......2005-11-03
This fabulous book fills a hole in Australian Aboriginal history in the 1930's when Aboriginal girls were taken away from their families to be "integrated" into white society. The book tells the story of "Ming", a white lady who had several of these Aboriginal servants, and of her fight with the ruling white classes in Australia at the time, to give the women their money, their rights, their dignity etc.
WONDERFUL book indeed!
Anyone who is seriously interested in Aboriginal history and politics will find this book fascinating reading.

Book Description
Dashiell Hammett meets speculative fiction in this engaging tale of two thespians who become stars in a conspiracy beyond their control.…
When struggling actors Nick and Luella meet, it’s love at act one. But the show may close earlier than they think when they find that an easy gig re-creating the past for elderly James Dumfries is really a phony time-travel scam concocted to separate an old man from his money.
It turns out that Dumfries is no ordinary senior citizen. He is the creator of workware, a technology that has changed the world by enabling workers to manage the most tiresome tasks without complaint, training…or memory. What machines had once done, man can do again–at the high price of his humanity. But that was never Dumfries’s intention–and now he doesn’t just want to see the past, he wants to change it. Through Nick. Caught in the web of Dumfries’s regrets and the government’s lies, Nick and Lu soon find themselves in the spotlight of a decades-long drama…with a killer ending.
Customer Reviews:
Truly Underappreciated.......2006-09-03
Yes, I'm a sucker for noir and especially for Dashiell Hammett, so I'm agape at this hidden gem of a book. I cannot believe the press it didn't get. It's fabulous. Well-crafted, intelligent, wonderful use of language, and fine adaptation of the hardboiled form into the dystopian future without excess of gore, violence or bad language--if you worry about those things--without feeling artifically "sanitized for your protection." Very well-built and executed.
What's the big deal: Sydney develops likable and interesting characters who then set out to unwind a plot as freakish and twisty as any Hammett or Chandler pot-boiler with a nicely-built SF hook, rising personal stakes, and a disquieting dystopic slant with a top-spin of modern politics that would be a credit to Dick or Bester if they were writing today. Sydney's language is rich, engaging and rife with subtle tones. Lots of intelligent literary and film references, as well as sly nods to SF traditions, and even a few deft pokes at popular culture. The book is also generally well-paced and engaging throughout, with enough sudden curves to keep the reader hooked almost all the time.
What's the downside: The lead-up to the actual ending is a bit of a bore after a pretty good main climax. For the better part of a chapter it reverts to somewhat tedious exposition that doesn't quite manage to transcend the narrative rule of "show, don't tell". The final "twist" ending can be spotted bearing down on the reader from several chapters away. What should be a gut punch is a mere epilogue. Threads are nicely tied up and no untidy ends are left--which is satisfying, but the build up to it is grim and lacks the gloss and panache of the rest of the book. Sydney occassionally gives in to an indulgent streak of clever, or an overly-heavy commentary in allegory he would have been better served to leave behind and the antagonist falls just a hair flat at the end through some mis-timing and rushing on the author's part. For these reasons, only 4 stars, not five, but...
I would recommend this book very highly for any fan of the hardboiled/noir school of mysteries--there are multiple threads to unravel in the course of the plot--or for fans of Dick, Bester, Morgan, or M. John Harris, or even Connie Willis in her darker modes. Intelligent, engaging, and surprising--over all a satifying read with some real plot value.
A Delicious Suprise.......2005-08-21
This book is deeper than you might expect at first. The language is rich and filled with unexpected images and insights. It is a story of humanity, freedom, and unexpected tyrannies.
There's not much I can say without running the risk of revealing key plot points. Oh, one thing you should know, the author appears to be Dennis Danvers -- author of several acclaimed novels.

Book Description
Reconstructing Manichaeism from scraps of ancient texts and the ungenerous polemic of its enemies (such as the ex-Manichaean Augustine of Hippo), BeDuhn reveals for the first time the religion as it was actually practiced. He describes the Manichaeans' daily ritual meal, their stringent disciplinary codes (intended to prevent humans from harming plants and animals), and their secretive religious procedures designed to transform the cosmos and bring about the salvation of all living beings.
Overturning long-held assumptions about Manichaean dualism, asceticism, spirituality, and the pursuit of salvation, The Manichaean Body changes completely how we look at this ancient religion and the environment in which Christianity arose. BeDuhn's conclusions revolutionize our understanding of the Manichaeans, clearly distinguishing them from Gnostics and other early Christian heretics and revealing them to be practitioners of a unique world religion.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2005-03-15
This book opened my eyes to the whole religion of Manichaeism, which I had been previously unaware. For the layperson, its excellent to give one an overview of Manichaean traditions, east and west. It goes through the food ceremonies of both but provides the reader with insight through many translated Manichaean texts. It also contrasts and compares with modern traditions that are most likely similar in food ceremonial character with the ancient Manichaeans.
Also, the book is good for the scholar of Manichaeism or ancient Mediterranean religions, to give deep insight into the ritualism of this major religion, active during the time of early Christianity. I think understanding this tradition is important for students of Christianity as well, as I feel its aesceticism and ritualism as well as priesthood may have effected the Christians of the Roman Empire. Since Augustine was a Manichaean, its important in understanding the thinking of this Christian Father as well.
The Body, Myth and Ritual.......2000-04-30
With the publication of this revised Indiana University doctoral dissertation, the academy has given history of religions hobbyists an exciting new model for responsible ritual studies. BeDuhn's work is carefully researched and tightly organized, reconstructing the Manichaean alimentary, disciplinary and ritual complex while articulating a notion of ritual as a coherent approach to reality. Such concerns are of more than academic interest, and the fascinated reader soon forgives the peculiarities of style and structure endemic to the dissertation mode. This book would be enjoyed by all who have followed the last decade's interest in the body and the relation of myth and ritual.

Customer Reviews:
Collectible Trade Blankets.......2006-07-29
"...an Omaha girl was seen flitting among the tall prairie flowers, shifting her white blanket to suit her varying moods - now letting it float as she swept in ever-widening curves, or at the slightest sound, hiding her glossy head and laughing among its soft folds." ~The Omaha Tribe, Alice Fletcher
Robert W. Kapoun documents the wide variety of trade blankets in this fascinating study of Native American culture. He describes the blanket as a poetic statement that is given a voice by the wearer. If you have ever wrapped a blanket around yourself for comfort or used a scarf as a fashion statement, then you begin to understand how a robe can create various moods and gives the wearer a sense of fashion.
"These blankets are not merely being worn to provide warmth; they create a statement, if you will, which says, "These blankets are part of our culture." ~Robert W. Kapoun
The writing in this book is especially poetic and while learning about the cultural significance of the blankets, you may also start to feel a deeper connection with nature. These blankets promote a sense of community and are used as gifts, to carry children, to display wealth and to protect from the elements.
The designs on the robes make an interesting study when you see the charts for the terminology of the designs. Then this becomes art appreciation as you identify a dragonfly, a feather, clouds, lightning, turtles, teepees, rabbit ears, birds and leaves. The brightly colored blankets either have stripes or intricately woven patterns. This book identifies collectible blankets and also explores the historical significance.
The way to find modern versions of these blankets here at Amazon is to apparently type in "Pendleton Woolen Mills." I tried just about everything else.
~The Rebecca Review
A fascinating, unusual history.......2006-06-23
Over three hundred photos beautifully spice a history and survey of pre-World War II Indian trade blankets, revealing not only examples from the five major manufacturers, but some surprises confronting the common myth of Native blanket-making. Collectors, textile artists and Native American history enthusiasts alike receive a thorough survey of these blankets, how they became a symbol of Native history, and how they were traded and constructed. From machinery purchases and business transactions within the manufacturing industry to how tribal customers directed the Indian trade blanket designs and manufacturing process, LANGUAGE OF THE ROBE is a fascinating, unusual history.

Book Description
Substantially revised, Creolization of Language and Culture is the first English edition of Robert Chaudenson's landmark text Des iles, des hommes, des langues. Chaudenson argues against the traditional account of creole genesis taking full account of the peculiar linguistic and social factors at play in colonial societies. This is an accessible book that makes important contributions to the study of pidgin and creole language varieties and to the development of contemporary European languages outside Europe.

Customer Reviews:
A couple of really classic patterns and the rest are nice.......2007-01-30
The sweaters in the book are easy to knit. The directions are clear and I plan to knit over half the patterns in the book. For me, that's a high return on the purchase of a pattern book. I knit in order to have sweaters that fit me, look good and are in good colors for me, so I like the fact that these patterns are simple and basic - I don't need to be challanged by a sweater pattern. If you're looking for trendy sweaters that will be completely out of style next winter this book is not what you're looking for.
Classic patterns for larger figures.......2006-07-25
I found the patterns in this book to be very easy to make. I loved the selection of classic styles. While other reviewers found the styles to be a bit simple, these will never go out of style. When you hand-knit something, you want to be able to wear it for a long time and these classic patterns are perfect for that reason.
Style at Large:Knitting Designs for Real Women.......2005-10-14
The instructions and diagrams were very clear and easy to follow. The patterns however, were not very attractive. To my eye, they look cumbersome and not very flattering.
Unimpressive.......2004-08-19
They just made large patterns. Some nice ones, but not necessarily flatterng or slimming. Some were downright ugly and old-ladyish. Check the library!

Book Description
Terry Winters’s work of the past decade weaves disparate strains of idea, object, and physical operations into the primary logic of his art. His art contains an astonishing array of forms and demonstrates the equally surprising breadth of his artistic language. This retrospective volume continues where the mid-career survey (1992) at the Whitney Museum concluded, presenting the past decade of Winters’s innovative work in paintings, prints, drawings, and artists’ books. Terry Winters presents the ways in which the artist creates sets and subsets of distinctive works that interact with bodies of previous and current work. Also included are images by the artist that have not previously been exhibited or published.
Winters’s work is frequently included in conversations and studies relating to the interplay of art and science, and his recent paintings, drawings, and prints reflect his engagement with scientific and computational systems of thought and presentations of information. For Winters, abstract art has become a vehicle not for “reproducing and inventing form but for harnessing forces.” By utilizing expressive means, “data becomes pictorial and spatial.” This superbly illustrated volume displays the full range of Winters’s newest works and the complex relationships that link them to one another.
