Book Description

In a gritty thriller from the acclaimed author whom William Vollmann called "a real storyteller," a street-smart young woman takes what looks like an easy job and ends up having to solve a murder case--before the next body that turns up is her own. Queenie Sells is having what she thinks is a good day. After getting fired from her job at a calendar company for botching Daylight savings, she is informally hired by a wealthy acquaintance to track down his girlfriend, a stripper named Trigger Happy. But Queenie's seemingly good luck turns hard when she finds Trigger dead in her apartment. Now Queenie's daily routine of being a drunk smartass is put on hold as she becomes both a suspect for the murder and the target for an unknown predator. Hopping from bar to bar, from Coney Island clam stands to the Waldorf Astoria, she inadvertently lands on the trail of Trigger's killer and puts herself in the line of fire.

5 out of 5 stars a bombshell of a book!.......2004-08-10

Reviewed by Leslie Van Newkirk for Small Spiral Notebook

If she wore the latest couture instead of three dollar flip flops, she could be a fashionista. If she ordered Cosmos instead of "red eyes" and whiskey shots, she could be a sophisticated spy. And if she were beautiful, she'd have a shot at being a Bond-girl bombshell. But Queenie Sells is not any of these. She's an aging, dysfunctional, not-quite-hipster from Burning Grounds, Brooklyn, and courtesy of Louisa Luna in Serious As a Heart Attack, she's one of the most refreshing heroines to shamble into the mystery genre. Queenie drinks, smokes, passes out, and wears clothing pulled from a festering laundry bag. But Luna manages to make Queenie endearing, rather than annoying; and although occasionally Queenie's internal philosophies border on the naïve, it's satisfying to follow a protagonist that has such confidence, yet still manages to do everything wrong (the antithesis would be the chick-lit heroine in so many novels today, who, despite her insecurity and bumbling foibles, somehow secures her own rightful position at the top of the career heap).

Luna's third novel showcases Sells's unique ability to sniff out trouble wherever it brews. As Queenie says, "Sometimes people told Queenie things. She noticed it when she was in high school, even after she started going to Boston for day school with the rich kids; the kids in the neighborhood, the mill kids, would still find her, not ask for anything, just talk themselves hoarse, tell her all their secrets." And of course, this characteristic makes her a perfect candidate for a reluctant private eye. But before Queenie can get her sleuth on, she's got other messes to make - getting fired, getting home, and getting wasted in that order. However, a happenstance meeting with her old friend Hummer gives her a second chance at making a few extra bucks. Her mission is to find out what has happened to his mistress, Paper Doll stripper Trigger Happy, who had disappeared the week before. As with the "mill kids," Queenie's in her element at the Paper Doll and is able to wrangle some information from another stripper, Baby. But in Luna's words, "It was a little after ten, and Queenie made a professional decision that if she was going to do any more research for the night, she would have to be drunk." This description sums up Sells's character throughout most of the novel, although her diversions into inebriation give Queenie, a kind of lucidity and purpose for her task, like Popeye when he eats his spinach to fight the bully Bluto.

Written in the same sparse style as her previous endeavor, Crooked, Luna has a knack for characterizing the marginal - lost, deluded, crazy, and criminal people hovering on the fringes, bumming cigarettes from the rest of us. But whereas Crooked was engaging, if somewhat humorless, Queenie's comedic witticisms keep Serious As a Heart Attack from becoming too staid. Furthermore, like Jonathan Lethem and Collin Harrison's city nocturnes, Luna takes us on a Manhattan-Brooklyn detour, dragging us through neighborhood joints that we would not likely venture into without our literary guide. Yet this Brooklyn balladist doesn't philosophize. Her main character tells it like it is and most of it ain't pretty.

At times, Ms. Luna's prose is repetitive. And occasionally, the reader may wish that there were a little more to the plot or that some of Queenie's unraveling threads actually turned into secondary storylines, instead of meandering and then fading away. But these are insignificant criticisms in light of a very entertaining book. I'm willing to bet that more than a few fans will follow Queenie's progress, if only to sit on the sidelines and hope that she gets her life together. Which begs the question for the future: if Queenie Sells ever cleaned up her act and became a more traditional protagonist, would she be nearly as much fun?

5 out of 5 stars fun New York offbeat crime thriller.......2004-05-25

On the train to work in Manhattan, the Brooklyn Dodger runs into Hummer Fish from high school. They discuss how friends and relatives are doing like her dead grandfather of three decades. Finally Queenie informs Hummer that she will be fired from her proofing job at a calendar making company for missing that the start of daylight savings was placed on the wrong Sunday. Hummer hires Queenie to find his girlfriend, stripper Trigger Happy.

Queenie locates Trigger in her apartment, but wonders if she can collect a fee since the stripper is dead. NYPD Detective Olds suspects Queenie killed Trigger. Though she sasses the cops at every moment, someone stalks her while she makes the rounds (food and drink that is, not amateur sleuthing) of the two boroughs. On her trek to not smoke, not stay up all night, and not get laid, she meets a private detective who appreciates a woman with a New York mouth and willing to prove her innocence though Queenie knows not getting laid seems impossible.

This offbeat crime thriller is a delightful satirical slice of New York starring a tough-ass female who uses profanity as a greeting and symbolically rides the F-train. The story line never takes itself seriously as Queenie prefers bar hopping in Coney Island, but knows she must find the killer before either Olds arrests her or the culprit gives her a permanent home in the ground where she will stay out late forever. Louisa Luna provides a fun wild New York joy ride starring a BRAVE NEW GIRL.

5 out of 5 stars A TALENT as big and as serious as a myocardial infarction.......2004-05-13

Anyone interested in the human condition -- anyone who has been on a bus or subway at 10 o'clock on a Wednesday morning and observed a young woman, though seemingly not deranged but clearly drunk, sloven and discombobulated, and wondered to yourself: "what's her story?" -- this book is for you. They say there are some 14 million stories in the naked city, and while Louisa Luna only has room to give us one example in "Serious as a Heart Attack," it is clear from her sensitive attention to detail and the poignancy with which she shares her characters with the reader that she has the guts and talent to tackle the next 13,999,999. In her third novel, Ms. Luna proves once and for all that not only is her talent serious, but her intensity is indeed like a myocardial infarction.

4 out of 5 stars Fantasy With Fun.......2006-10-28

This is my first shot at Tom Holt's work, and I have to say that "Snow White and the Seven Samurai" certainly entertained and delivered on the promised laughs. Also, having an interest in Japanese literature, Holt got my curiosity going in how the heck one can put the Seven Samurai and Snow White in the same story. He did. Rather well, I might add.

In the fantasy dream dimension where so many creatures we all know and love live, 3 teen hackers manage to crash the Wicked Queen's MIrrors 3.1 system. This plunges the whole dimension into chaos, with the Big Bag Wolf changing into frogs, and other things. The Three Little Pigs end up with nothing to do, and Snow White turns out to be a scammer who is taking the Seven Samurai for a ride. This is in addition to the rest of the zany people and creatures one finds in Holt's world.

Holt is a great writer with a gift for great descriptions and puns. Greatly enjoyed the sardonic wit of many of the characters, such as the Wicked Queen, Dumpy the Dwarf and Julian, Desmond and Eugene, (the 3 Little Pigs). There was a lot of humour, and while most was of the "sniggering" variety, there were occassions when tears came to the eyes.

For comic fantasy, and that being an unknown quantity for me, I was impressed with this book from Tom Holt. I will certainly be looking into more of his work.

5 out of 5 stars A truly enjoyable read, brush up on your children's stories.......2004-11-11

I have read several of Holt's book prior to reading this (Nothing But Blue Skies, Wish You Were Here, Odds and Gods, and Little People) but this has to be his best. It has just so much going on that you can only read this in small doses. It is just so clever. And funny. Don't forget funny. This guy must be fun to chat with after a few drinks. He just goes here and there and is always looking to make any situation funny. C'mon, Mirrors instead of Windows computer program, Snow White an actual dominatrix type, and don't forget the 3 little pigs. The Big Bad Wolf. Rumplestiltskin. Jack and Jill. Humpty Dumpty. The 3 blind mice. No one is sacred and left alone. The brothers Grimm visiting this land to steal stories, he just covers almost every well known children's story and just has fun with it. I had just as much fun reading this, maybe more. I have bought 2 or 3 copies and given them as gifts. I want others to find humor and laugh like I did. I want whoever is reading this to do the same.

4 out of 5 stars Industrial-strength goofiness, just what I wanted.......2003-10-07

Good stories stay good, even when told a different way. In "A Midsummer Night's Dream," for example, we have the fantastical realm, the powerful but fallible beings who transform others, and of course, the ones transformed. And, the steady stream of hilarious asides.

Okay, Holt isn't Shakespeare, but he does a good job with the same story elements. Yes, we wake up at the end and find that it was all a dream, or something like that, except that some people don't wake up and just dream on.

Not heavy reading, by any means, but it does a nice job filling the gap between Pratchett's releases.

4 out of 5 stars And the Wicked Queen, the Big Bad Wolf, and Bill Gates, etc........2002-06-02

For some reason Tom Holt has never gotten the attention that Terry Pratchett does. They are both comic geniuses, both very solid, imaginative writers, and both manage to be incredibly prolific. Possibly, it is because Pratchett has chosen to set his stories in Discworld, with a regular cast of characters, and Holt starts from scratch each time. But, without question, you can't go wrong with either one. Providing you like to laugh, that is.

Somehow three little hackers (disguised as three colorblind mice) slip into the castle of the Wicked Queen and come upon her just as she is running Mirrors 3.1 on her magic mirror. They watch as she runs 'Who_is_fairest.exe and sets an appointment in her calendar for doing away with Snow White. As the queen slips off the hackers attempt to take control of the operating system. No surprise, the pest control software works and the Queen returns in what is almost the nick of time. Unfortunately, the female of the three mice turns the mirror off rather than shutting it down. In this world, Mirrors 3.1 is the real operating system, and it doesn't take well to sudden power losses.

In fact, it scrambles everything in memory - which is everything. The Wicked Queen quickly grabs her backup memory bucket (think of it as a 'wet' drive), and heads off into the magic forest to find someone who knows how to pour a full system reload. And so begins the ultimate fractured fairy tale. In it, you will discover that the Three Pigs have resorted to building with concrete and anti-tank weapons. You will meet the wolf that huffs, puffs and says 'rivet.' And find out that Snow White is fond of bondage. You will even get to wonder 'What are these seven samurai doing in a dwarf tale.'

What you won't get to do is sit there, read with a grim expression, and not even utter a snicker. Tom Holt is a wizard at the quickly set up, awful pun ("two wrongs don't make us Wrights" and "good fencers make bad neighbors." He has a knack for literary sight gags and the sublimely ridiculous. His books are meant for those times when all the bits refuse to fit together and you just need to think about something else. Or when you want to get somewhat hysterical for a few hours. While this isn't Holt's very best effort (try 'Expecting Someone Taller' or 'Flying Dutch') it is, like all of his work, way better than any of the competition except Pratchett.

4 out of 5 stars If I fall out of the chair laughing... it's good..........2001-08-17

I'm not really a fantasy kind of person. But after reading this book, maybe I ought to shift preferences after all. This book is hilarious, funny. It's corny, easily understood by adolescents. His description and the way the whole story just spins around had my brain churning up mental images. Already I've drawn a sketch of the wicked queen. The Big Bad Wolf and his consort the elf is next on the list. Who knows, maybe the whole cast would make an appearance in my sketch book. Every one is entitled to their own opinions. This book, in my opinion, is a perfect read to cheer oneself up when they're days away from major examinations. Stress-reliever. Read it and if you fall outta your chair as I did during Physics, then it's good.

5 out of 5 stars Great Sci-fi entertainment! On to Book 2!.......2006-06-27

This book was great. The main character is John Bandicut, some kind of a land surveyor on Triton, a moon of planet Neptune. He encounters a very interesting type of alien that does not have its own physical presence in this universe. The alien takes up residence in John's mind, which is pretty strange. But the two have to become friends and work together as they try to figure out how to save Earth from destruction.

This alien who, calls himself Charlie, is quite interesting as he tries to understand human behavior. I especially liked the scenes where John Bandicut is trying to meet or get close to women because this alien does not like females and the idea of sexual contact is just too gross for it to handle. "It is so... organic" he says. Very funny.

This is the second Jeffrey Carver book I've read. The first was Infinity Link with wich I wasn't too impressed... but thought it had potential.

I came across Carver's collection in our local library and picked up Neptune Crossing with the hopes I might have a good series to read. I wasn't disappointed.

The fact is, different people expect different things from a sci fi book. To me, Neptune Crossing never ceased to be interesting. There weren't side stories that bored you... it was "in your face" throughout and I found myself glued to the book. Carver developed a believeable character in John Bandicut and placed him in a position we'd all like to be in... he had to save humanity.

This book is a great read. It gives you a glimpse into our potential future with the computer. I highly recommend it.

        4 out of 5 stars A Great read!!.......2003-08-24

Nevermind that you don't understand everything that's going on in the story... that's what's great about SF!

I was very pleased with the pace of this book. It moved at just the right pace and found you skipping because there were no boring parts.

The characters aren't that deep but just deep enough to keep you wanting more. Bandie's character develops at just the right pace for the book but not so much that you don't want to move on to the next one.

        I'm ready for book 2!

As others have said, "Neptune Crossing" seemingly has everything it needs to be a compelling scifi read. An "electrifying scenario" that finds a comet speeding on a collision course with Earth, an alien artifact with accompanying alien, romance, and "a winning combination in Bandicut and the...quarx". Why, then, did I find this book less than compelling? First, I'm not crazy about incorporeal beings that inhabit people's minds. They're OK in fantasies or ghost stories, but this is supposed to be "hard" scifi and there isn't any hard evidence anywhere for the existence of incorporeal beings. Secondly, as somebody else has pointed out, there is a lot here (and not just alien technology) that goes completely unexplained. Finally, though, and most importantly, the story meandered. There just wasn't enough action to keep me turning the page to see what would happen next. Between the first 30 pages and the last 50, not much happens that seems to be of major consequence to the! plot. Even the development of the relationship between John and Julie seems to be a side issue, significant only because it adds to Bandicut's reluctance to do what he obviously must. The mine accident, for example, seems largely irrelevant. Ultimately, this was a slow read. Reading often right before going to bed, I more than once found that I had fallen asleep after reading only a page or two.

Oddly, the action finally did pick up near the end, and the end left things hanging in an interesting place. It left me wanting to know more about the new artifact and where things go from there, as well as whether John will ever get back to Julie. In short, it left me wanting to read the next installment in the series (this book is the first). On its own, this book is, IMHO, just average. You may want to give it a try, however, on the possibility that subsequent books in the series will be better. Stay tuned.

While the stories Ms. Correa compiled may very well have been inspiring and heartwarming, I was unable to even get through the first one without putting the book down. The quality of the writing, or lack thereof, and the even basic mistakes (using 'to' where 'too' should have been used) made it apparent that this book had to have been self-published. In my opinion, no self-respecting publishing company would have published a book with such errors. And such errors tend to, unfortunately, take away from the stories of such amazing women. I was really looking forward to reading this book, until I opened it up. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

This book like several others I have read are a help to many of the wives and a great help for morale. I also read and recomnmend Homefires:War through the Eyes of a Military Wife which I found very eye opening as to what the families go through in times like these. I also recommend My Daddy is a Soldier which was a great help to my grandson and the other militry children in his school.

5 out of 5 stars What an inspiration !!.......2004-09-10

Patti did a great job in compiling stories from all walks of life and to bring out through them the strength that these military spouses have demonstrated throughout their trials during their military life. One of the hardest thing as a new spouse is to realize that "we" will always come second and his "job" will always come first. The title of this book is so descriptive of how a new spouse develops over the years. It was over 18 years ago that I was a little pebble but throughout the years I became the rock in my family. During these times of constant deployments this book will be an inspiration to new spouses and hopefully will help them become the rock in their family.

                          Book Description

The Fostoria Glass Company, started in 1897, is one of the most famous names in glassware. Collectors everywhere search for this beautiful crystal, often choosing several favorite patterns. Ann Kerr has created an unbelievable reference for these collectors in a user-friendly, informative book which showcases Fostoria's delicate and quality glass. Volume II features detailed information on Fostoria's etched, carved, and cut designs; the lines most sought after by today's collectors. It is a companion volume to her first, published in 1994, which focused on the pressed, blown, and hand-molded shapes. This all-new book includes color photographs as well as line drawings and a host of catalog reprints to aid in identifying each piece of Fostoria glassware. This huge reference guide is very simple to use with each pattern listed in alphabetical order, and then by piece. Important facts such as histories, dates, colors, sizes, and pattern details are provided for over 475 patterns. Current values are given for each piece and all variations. An excellent reference and value guide for Fostoria collectors, this well-researched work will also become an essential book for all antiques and glass dealers nationwide. 1997 values. 5 X 11. AUTHORBIO: Ann Kerr was an avid Russel Wright collector and researchers of his works for many years. She was able to finish writing her third edition of the Collector's Encyclopedia of Russel Wright before she passed away in 2001. REVIEW: In only 168 pages, this book has made a successful collector out of me. It has numerous illustrations, all in color; an orderly method of describing types of buttons and their history; tips on cleaning and displaying them; and addresses of publications, suppliers, and clubs for collectors. Although it is crisply informative, the book also conveys the pleasant, upbeat personality of the writer. -Amazon.com

Well, I went ahead and bought this book despite my reservations. I am not exactly sorry I did, as I find the information useful, but only in combination with other reference books. The line drawings of the designs are alright. The patterns are organized alphabetically, which is great if you know the name of the pattern you are looking for...I don't. However, I think that with time, it will be a valuable resource. Definately not for the novice collector.

5 out of 5 stars best in the series.......2005-01-23

I happened across the first two books in the series at a bookstore and could not resist buying them. Since then, I've bought this book.

To date, I have not made any planes in this book yet (though I have made planes from his other related books). I have looked through it extensively and am impatiently waiting for having spare time to work on the planes. There is a nice selection of planes from a WW1 Tiger Moth all the way up to Burt Rutan's Voyager that flew around the world on one tank of gas. I personally look forward to building and flying the Voyager and the GeeBee R-2. The planes are from a variety of countries, as well.

In addition to the planes, there are nice historical backgrounds for each aircraft included. I'm an airplane nut, and there are some planes in here that I'd never heard of.

I should mention that this is not a typical 'paper airplane' book. You do not simply take a sheet of paper and fold it in various ways then fly it. You have to cut out numerous pieces, form them to get the proper curves, glue them (carefully, so that the paper doesn't warp when it's drying), and THEN fly them. Even though that may sound challenging, the first few airplanes are enough to learn the skills necessary for the later (and more challenging) airplanes. And...THE PLANES FLY GREAT when built with patience and care. Mine have survived some great crashes into walls and radiators since I have a habit of launching them indoors (all the planes have a hook for launching via rubber bands).

You don't have to be a fine artist or as rich as Midas to create a stylish, personalized, luxurious-feeling home. Many of the projects and techniques described in this lavishly illustrated book will take the reader from a half hour to a maximum of three hours to transform dull into dramatic and create stunning visual affects, whimsical touches, and infusions of color and texture. Lynn does not promote a particular style or taste, but rather shows the reader how to develop individual style and express it in doable ways without breaking the bank. Also covered are cosmetic fixes and quick-and-easy decorating tricks, party planning, and homemade gifts that are simple to make but elegant and memorable to give. The simplicity and modest cost of all the projects detailed by Lynn are sure to inspire the reader to begin the transformation of home into "home sweet home." --Mark A. Hetts

                          Book Description

For those of us who are too busy to spend a whole weekend preparing for a party or fixing up the living room, Bari Lynn offers this book full of time-saving projects.

In a few hours, you can transform an entire room--without breaking the bank. In less than the time it would take to shop in store after store for a housewarming gift, you can make a gift that is all the more meaningful because you made it with your own hands. Instead of spending a fortune on new table settings for a special dinner party, Bari shows you how to liven up your old china, glassware, and table linens for mere pennies.

Each project--from making a stitchless bed canopy to color-washing walls to making a mosaic serving tray using old, mismatched china--is fully illustrated with step-by-step color photographs and gorgeous pictures showing the finished product in Bari's or her friends' homes.

The twenty-five projects in Eclectic Living require only the most basic materials that you can find in crafts stores, hardware stores, or even at flea markets or in your attic. In the list of materials needed for each project, Bari indicates where you can buy them; she also provides a resource guide to suppliers, as well as a glossary of terms and tools used in the projects.

Bari firmly believes that home decorating, gift giving, and entertaining should not be difficult or expensive, nor should they be dull. That's why all of her projects are fun, simple, and dramatically effective as opportunities to express your own creativity and personal, eclectic taste--this is not department store style. It's yours.

Bari Lynn takes you through each project step by step in easy to understand language and uncomplicted directions. Also what I found helpful is that she provides the information where to purchase the supplies you need. In one weekend you can change the look of your house with very little effort and money.

5 out of 5 stars Good starting point!.......2000-03-25

This is a collection of projects you can do in a short period of time, such as on a weekend. One or two, not ALL of them. I've done the simple bed canopy and I love it. Didn't take long, either! I've been doing flavored vinegars for Xmas gifts for years, and everyone loves them. The projects are easy and leave a lot of room for creativity and personal expression, and no right or wrong way to do them. They're also not as expensive as you might think. This is a good book for people who think that "decorating" means lots of loud flowery wall paper with upholstery fabric to match, new objects de art, and of course, lots of money. No, these are neat things that you can do to "redecorate" without "refinancing." There are great gift ideas as well, although I've not tried glass etching just yet! May I respectfully suggest that you do a good spring cleaning before considering decorating. Can't tell you how many people I know that want to redecorate, but never think of cleaning up first. Clear out your closet, neaten it up, donate or dispose of unneeded things, (See Suze Orman's The Courage to be rich), repair anything that needs repair (upholstery, vacuum cleaners, replace a picture frame's glass, furniture/chair/sofa legs, etc.), then think about the colorwashing on the walls, or something else. Then start thinking color and coordination, or not!

                                  Book Description

If the name of Joanna Southcott strikes a chord today, it is usually in connection with her famous Box of Sealed Prophecies. But, if asked what that Box is, some will assure you that it contains the secrets of the second coming, while others say that it holds nothing more significant than a woman's lacy night cap and a pistol. As to where the Box is now, some repeat that it was opened in 1927 in Westminster Hall and that it is now housed in the Harry Price Library in London. Others have suggested that its contents are in the British Library, while the Box itself languishes in a cellars of the British Museum. Still others maintain that the Box no longer exists - if, indeed, it ever did. The truth is far simpler yet in some ways more mysterious. The Box does exist. The author has seen and examined it. There has been an unbroken chain of custodians from Joanna's day to this, and the present guardians of the Box take their responsibilities every bit as seriously as their predecessors. Moreover, all the evidence suggests that Joanna Southcott's Box has not been opened for at least a hundred and fifty years and that it contains prophecies which have been kept with their seals intact ever since her death. This book, by establishing the provenance of the Box, dispels the falsehoods that have blurred its history. Joanna Southcott's Box of Scaled Prophecies is locked, nailed and corded, its contents still awaiting examination.
