Me encantó esta novela. No sé mucho de estilos literarios, pero encontré el texto casi hipnotizante. Me han dicho que está escrito de una manera que se puede cantar al ritmo de un bolero. Es casi como haber visto una película - puedo imaginar los personajes y las escenas del libro como si los hubiera visto, en vez de visualizado al leer.
Mayra Santos Febrés es un talento inmenso. Personalmente me encantan las novelas por poetas - espero que nos de muchas más.

Sirena Selena: Caribbean Queen!.......2000-10-24
It has been a long time since I have read a beautiful novel set in the Caribbean. I had to get my hands on Mayra Santos Febres's book! It is so great to rediscover my Latin roots!
Sirena Selena is a fifteen-year-old boy whose grandmother died and left him alone in the streets of San Juan. The boy, however, had a great gift: he had the voice of an angel. Having heard him sing sad boleros in an alley, La Martha -- a Drag Queen and nightclub owner -- decides to take the boy under "her" wing. The novel takes you on a delicious and poignant trip to the life-altering events of Selena's life.
I love the bickering and the conversations between the "locas"; it is hilarious. The storytelling and language is beautiful. I marvel at the flawless translation. This is a very unique novel that everyone should indulge in. I highly recommend it!
Caribbean Sizzle.......2000-09-23
When the 15 year-old Sirena Selena gets dolled up like a goddess and emotes her way through heart-wrenching boleros that her abuela taught her, men get weak in the knees and women swoon. That Sirena happens to be a boy (and massively hung) with his whole illusion masterminded by La Martha (another draga of Old San Juan, Puerto Rico) makes no difference to anybody once they are in the overwhelming power of the voice and the image. They have seen Heaven and they want a piece of it, whether under the gown they find boy, girl or something totally new. Santos-Febres is brilliant in her descriptions of gender construction and the artifice of "womanly wiles" as well as of the fragility of their opposite, the macho facade. The gossip, cat-fighting and climbing that the dragas of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic indulge in becomes almost heroic in her capable hands. The tale of a "woman" besting her man is as old as the hills, but the Caribbean sizzle and drag-queen sass make this novel as refreshing a delight to read in the moment as it is a provocative moral tale to ponder after the fact. Ay, carajo! Sing out, Sirena Selena!
Great look at locas from inside out.......2000-09-14
I loved this book. It has the feel of an anthopological study on street living and the glamour that is always elusive and fleeting. Martha is indeed divine, as a character and the wisdom that she imparts. A great look at a very vibrant part of society which most of us don't know. It has many tragic and unjust moments, but it all goes towards making that perfect performance. Great book.
Sirena Selena.......2000-09-09
A wonderful novel. I found it difficult to stop reading this beautifully written & translated book. The story is told in a way that brings vivid visuals to mind. It takes you on an entertaining rollercoaster ride through the emotions associated with romance, friendship, and self-discovery. I would highly recommend it to anyone who has enjoyed "Like water for chocolate" or "Love in the time of cholera".
Santos first novel is a delight in Caribbean literature.......2000-07-19
This first novel by Puerto Rican writer Mayra Santos is the voyage of a couple of characters seeking for a better future in the Domincan Republic.The main two characters are carefully constructed by Santos, so that the reader gets a believable and loving kid, that dresses as a woman and amazes people with his voice, plus an enchanting woman that guides his career. Santos also utilizes different points of view to complete the story and even incorporates parts in English that reflect the contradicting situation in the Caribbean. Santos involves the reader through a journey of music, love, and ambition using her best skills as a talented writer. Part sad, and part happy, the successful combination of fiction and history in "Sirena Selena" is not to be missed.

Frustrating characters.......2003-08-20
Having read Rabe's DRAGONS OF A NEW AGE trilogy and now this, I've come to the conclusion that she has a difficult time writing characters that act like actual people would. This tended to improve as the aforementioned trilogy progressed, but it was terrible in this book. What I mean by this is, if something strange or suspicious occurs, most people would stop and question it. However, Rabe's characters tend to blithely continue on with what they were doing and don't give it a second thought. Very very frustrating to read when you know that it needs to be questioned. It's as if Ms. Rabe just wants to get where she's going and she completely disregards the fact that she needs to make her characters act like normal people in order to make them believable. This makes it very difficult to become emotionally involved with either the characters or the story. I'm guessing that this is one of her early works because, by the third book of DRAGONS OF A NEW AGE, her characters were behaving more reasonably.
The other thing about this book that caused me to dislike it so much was the fact that her main elf character, Gair, didn't act like an elf at all. He was impatient, impetuous, and, for someone who claimed to be a scholar in the field of magic, tended to jump right in to doing something without even considering the consequences. These characteristics are all the complete opposite of those describing an elf. They are more along the lines of a human. If you're going to create a character and assign them a race and you want them to be believable, they have to have at least some of the characteristics of that race. Gair seemed to have none. I felt no sympathy for him whatsoever. I am sure this was not Rabe's intent, but she fell completely flat in attempting to make me connect with the character.
Finally, since Gair was such an integral part of the plot and Ms. Rabe was forcing him into acting so unlike an elf, the whole story just seemed to contrived. It was simply a way of establishing Goldmoon's Citadel of Light for use in subsequent books. A story had to be created to put these pieces into place. The bad characterization just made it blatantly obvious to the reader that the whole point of the book was to get to the ending point. Unfortunately, Rabe's handling of the characters just made the journey unpleasant and unbelievable.
It was a decent story, but nothing to get excited about. The execution could have been light years better. Unless you're a hardcore Dragonlance fan, you can probably skip this book and not miss much (if anything).
Healing powers come back Krynn!!.......2002-10-20
As a writer, Jean Rabe either runs hot or cold. There's no middle ground with her. Her novel Marquesta Kar-thon: I started reading & then quit. I'll go back & read it sometime. Her 5th Age trilogy was god-awful stupid.
On the other hand, her Dhamon trilogy - while I haven't read them yet - sounds promising. This book is very good. You know there's a threat to Goldmoon but you don't know where it's coming from until springs up. I was completely surprised.
The characters are well-developed, the plot's strong & it draws you in. The rules by which they recieve their clerical powers in this book actually makes sense unlike the rules they made for the wizards in the 5th Age. A good read.
The Silver Stair.......2002-04-26
First, DRAGON LANCE books are world class fanasty books. Unless you know nothing about reading these types of books you have no reason rating this book so low. All books by Jean Rabe are of the greatest stories told throughout DRAGON LANCE saga. The Silver Stair just happens to be my most favorite DL ever because theres just so much going on throughout the story. "Just read it"! DRAGON LANCE rules all others fail to come close.
Just Rabe's other books.......2002-03-05
The characters are all shallow and the story is poorly written. The elf goes from being an inheritantly good person to the most evil person in the world in one chapter for no apparent reason. He also gets whacked in the knee 5 or 6 times with a hammer then two pages later is out running someone. You gotta wonder why TSR lets her continue to write for the dragonlance series, I have not read a good book from her yet.
Another great Dragonlance book........2001-06-04
Despite a few flaws I found this book quite entertaining. Following Gair's story was a very interesting read, and if this is how the Age of Mortals trilogy is like I'm sure it's hardly as bad as some people say. One thing that was odd, how was the mage at the start using magic as he did?

Where there is life..........2005-10-24
is there hope? The Earth is recovering from a atomic war that was carried out twenty years earlier. And right after the missiles exploded the aliens came and protected some of the towns and cities with the Walls. The Walls kept the people in, while they watched the rest of the world die. The Walls kept them in but allowed the radiation in.
But some babies lived and some animals and plants survived (inside the Wall). Now humans must try to keep living, planning for a future, a future for their children and mankind.
To have a future, they must understand their past and also come to understand the aliens. Did they start the war? Why did they come and build the Walls? What plans do they hace for mankind or are they just collecting what is left of mankind for a zoo?
A must for any sci-fi library.
Life Goes On.......2004-12-16
This story was well enough written, but it lacked some pizzazz or something.
It told the story of a community after the nuclear holocaust, people are protected by some advanced species. The proctectors can only communicate in pictures and, therfore, not very complex ideas.
The story revolves around a young girl, coming of age, who is rebellious, but can not really find anything to rebel against. The people are well enough off and have freedom within the confines of their community, but they cannot go beyond a certain distant away.
The be all to end all is that she gets to know their captors better and grows to see them as protectors. I think there is an allogory to pregnancy and birth in here also, but I did not look or think too hard about it. It is a pretty good story.
Very Good and Unconventional Science Fiction.......2001-07-31
This book is an interesting combination of pacifist-Quaker tract, coming of age novel, and post-holocaust science fiction. The story is set in a near future after a nuclear holocaust-nuclear winter. There are small colonies of survivors in communities maintained by enigmatic aliens, whom some survivors suspect of triggering the holocaust. The main character is a young woman coming to maturity in a community of survivors in Pennsylvania, a community where many survivors are Quakers. The point of the story is the necessity of pacifism and Quaker respect for life beliefs. The characterization is convincing and the author's depiction of this future is equally convincing. The quality of writing is very good.

The Big Picture.......2006-11-10
After reading the Nag Hammadi Library, I became aware of "The Course in Miracles" and became a student. I was looking for a book that captured the higher perceptions of the gnostics and measured them against ACIM. Dr Wapnick did it again. It is a real treasure and one I will keep as part of my library. Basically anything that I have read of Dr. Wapnick's has helped me tremendously. This is not an easy read. It is technical and very deep.
Excellent Work.......2006-05-19
Even though I'm not an "A Course in Miracles" follower, this book is really a gem. Although this book is directed to Course students, it explain very thoroughly and rationally the relation between Ancient Christianity, Platonism, Neo-Platonism and Gnosticism. There is only one small flaw in all of this: it looks at "A Course in Miracles" as Jesus' original message, and hence he views Gnosticism very close to Jesus' original message in its metaphysical level. It is very interesting that he looks at the Gnostic's own mistakes as those which Course students frequently fall into.
Other than that, he chooses Bible translations very well; he chooses the appropriate Bible scholars, he chooses good authorities on the issue of Gnosticism, he shows the pertinent passages of philosophy authors (Plato, Aristotle, Philo, Plotinus), and shows the historical, social, political, religious realities of Christianity, Ancient Philosophy, Gnosticism and how they are related to each other.
I have an MA in Philosophy, and not a scholar. However, although I'm not a scholar, I would dare say that it is a reliable source to know these ancient movements.
The most scholarly book on the Course ever published.......2001-07-06
Although many books on A COURSE IN MIRACLES have now been published, this is the first volume to seriously address some of the theological issues raised by the Course teachings. It is a superb piece of scholarship. Specifically, this brilliant book relates the Course's thought system to that which underlies many of the Gnostic movements of the early centuries of Christendom, along with Platonism and Neo-Platonism. Dr. Wapnick has done students of the Course a great favor by providing this information, which can only serve to enhance the Course's credibility in the years to come, not least in the face of the growing dysfunctionality of "orthodox" Christianity.

This is an outstanding work! The scholarship bringing together the threads in the early Church and A Course in Miracles is wonderful. For those who enjoy Ken Wilber's work (thinking types), you'll love this book.

A good fun History, but not Completely Accurate.......2000-01-21
Italian author Palazzini covers the Coca-Cola history in this short biography of a soft drink. Interesting and has fun facts, but from what understand the Coca-Cola mythology has been skewed in recent times. Yet, this little factoid does not take away from the rest of the book which looks at, with pictures, Coca-Colas merchandising effort from collectible bottles, slogans, advertisements and anything else that can be sold to the public. A good book for a beginner in advertising and an interest in Coca-Cola, as well as the collector.

This is a great source for minimalist/urban kitchen inspiration. It is solely a picture book. I was a little disappointed when I went to the websites listed in the manufacturer directory. All are located in Europe and didn't appear to have much in the way of sourcing in the US.

An inspiring telling of one man's tale.......2004-06-19
I actually ran into this book by accident, which just adds to its significance. It is an easy reader for sure. But this is really about realizing that there is more to this world than we realize, especially when so many of us are busy in todays world. Dr. Pappas takes the time to explore his experiences and what he finds along the way. I found this book to be a true inspiration to seek out more from this life.
