A low whistle escaped Stampede's lips. He opened his mouth to speak and closed it again. Alan observed him as he slipped the pack over his shoulders. Evidently his companion did not know Mary Standish was the girl who had jumped overboard from the Nome, and if she had kept her secret, it was not his business just now to explain, even though he guessed that Stampede's quick wits would readily jump at the truth. A light was beginning to dispel the little man's bewilderment as they started toward the Range. He had seen Mary Standish frequently aboard the Nome; a number of times he had observed her in Alan's company, and he knew of the hours they had spent together in Skagway.

Suspenseful, engrossing, surprising, educational, worthwhile.......2005-12-06
This is one of the most interesting novels I have ever read. For that reason, I have read it several times! It has the kind of surprises you find in James Hilton's Random Harver, but with a suspenseful conclusion of the kind that can be imagined of a time when Alaska was young, and a good man with two good pistols can make a difference. There is also much information about Alaska, capitalists and the beauty of "uncivilized" territory. The character Mary Standish is fascinating, as well as her faith in The Alaskan.
You won't regret reading this book!

the alaskan.......2003-03-19
The Alaskan is an excellent novel describing the character
and trials, tribualtions and aspirations of a bygone generation.
One, the likes of which we may never see again.
Alan HOLT, A MAN'S MAN VERSUS ROSSLAND. The first a keeper
of raindeer as cattle, the last a greedy profiteer and opportunist. Enter MARY Standish. WHAT HAS SHE GOT TO DO
WITH ALL THIS. WELL I WON'T SAY MORE. The action is fast
paced and is way superior to any of the 2nd and third rate
stuff you see in the movie-houses. It reads like a script
for a hollywood feature film on the level of Amistad.
I highly recomend reading this novel. The characters are real and memorable. It is of special not how Mary STANDISH CONSIDERS
HERSELF AM AMERICAN WHILE ALAN HOLT CONSIDERS HIMSELF AN ALASKAN.
Must reading for people who are curious about Americas recent past and the price it had to pay in becoming an Empire and the people that made it happen thru blood, sweat & tears.

Book Description
THE WANDERING WIZARD
In sunny Latruria, the wicked old king was dead, and the new king spurned the rule of Evil. But turmoil began to spread, even across the border, when the new king also resisted Good! In nearby Merovence, Lord Wizard Matt Mantrell donned a disguise and set off to investigate--never dreaming that Latruria's sinister prime minister was mobilizing his minions...
"Minstrel" Matt sang his way south, dodging deadly enemies and music critics alike. He was teamed with a lovesick lad, menaced by a manticore, haunted by a ghost from Greece, and swept along in a flood of youngsters fleeing the provinces for the "glamour" of the city. But when they all washed up in the capital, harsh reality awaited them, not gold-paved streets.
And even harsher reality awaited Matt. The Lord Wizard faced the ultimate test of magic--and he would need a lot of help to pass!

Secular Wizard.......2002-10-16
I recently started to read Christopher Stasheff's books, and I loved the Wizard in Rhyme series, infact I enjoyed them so much I'm having a hard time with his other series as I liked the characters so much in a Wizard in Rhyme:-)
The Secular Wizard.......2000-03-28
I waited impatiently for the fourth book in the series A Wizard in Rhyme to be printed. I was not disappointed by the wait. I enjoyed the plot and characters have to be read to be believed. Stasheff has never failed to entertain me with a new twist to each book. I highly recommed this book to all readers of Science Fiction Fantasy.

Still Ahead Of Its Time.......2000-01-04
Although OVER THE RAINBOW first appeared in print almost a decade ago, it continues to have no equal in the interdisciplinary study of religion, film, and popular culture. Nathanson's subtitle is THE WIZARD OF OZ AS A SECULAR MYTH OF AMERICA. He takes great care to define terms such as "secular" and "myth," as well as that elusive but crucial word "religion." Thus the reader is engaged in a stimulating conversation with theorists like Gregor Goethals, John Wiley Nelson, Clifford Geertz, Victor Turner, Robert Bellah, Roland Barthes, Elaide, John Dominic Crossan and many others around a familiar -- but via Nathanson, always surprising -- common text, the 1939 film THE WIZARD OF OZ.
While Nathanson himself is a great admirer of the film, the importance of this study goes far beyond that particular production; it sets a standard of scholarship that is unrivaled in the field.
I have used this book in undergraduate religion and popular culture courses at two colleges in the northeast and also at the University of Alabama. It has been exceedingly helpful in introducing students to the religious character that lurks just below the surface of secular American culture -- what some scholars have called the "implicit" religiosity of popular culture. The book has opened students' eyes to religion in places they least expected to find it (indeed, some students even expect to encounter the Devil in productions that emanate from Hollywood). But it has also introduced them to perennial religious themes and enduring problems in the study of religion, thereby demonstrating to them that the academic study of religion is not only fascinating, it is also fun.

Very enjoyable!.......2000-07-10
I loved this book as a 12-year-old (girl!). I give it five stars because it is excellent (and clean!) in comparison to today's literature.
Two good sci-fi adventures, even if outdated........1999-06-09
"Lucky Starr and the Oceans of Venus" is the third novel in the Lucky Starr series (originally published under the pseudonym Paul French), the hero and his partner, John Bigman Jones, travel to Venus to discover why another Council member has been declared a traitor and to investigate a number of unusual occurances. In so doing, they discover a telepathic species that can control the actions of others as well as a plot to gain power. Asimov, in an introduction written in 1978, apologizes for the scientific inaccuracies that had come to light since 1954. In the book, Venus is a water world with a carbon dioxide atmosphere (as was believed in 1954). Later studies and probes have shown that Venus does indeed exhibit a "greenhouse effect" with a carbon dioxide atmosphere (approximately 96% CO2 and 3% nitrogen with a small fraction of other gases). But, the atmospheric pressure at the surface of Venus is about 94.5 times that of Earth's. Interestingly, there are at least four distinct cloud or haze regions in the atmosphere. In some of these regions, it appears that there are aerosol particles consisting of sulfuric acid and sulfur dioxide! The surface of the planet appears to have been dominated by volcanic conditions and is definitely not a water world. But, Asimov was accurate for 1954 and it is a good adventure story for teenagers. "Lucky Starr and the Big Sun of Mercury" is the fourth book in the series. In this tale, David Starr and his partner travel to Mercury to investigate a series of accidents and setbacks of a research project (using light [in hyperspace] to supply energy). A Senator in the Earth government is pressuring the Council of Science with claims of waste on science projects (a story very familiar to real researchers today). There also is some subtle similarities in this book to McCartyism. The enemy planetary system of Sirius is obviously based on the Soviet "threat" to the West in the 1950s. Once again, in an introduction written in 1978, Asimov apologizes for the scientific inaccuracies that crop up due to recent discoveries of the planet Mercury (of facts not known in 1956). The most obvious of these is the rotation of Mercury about its axis. Until the mid-1970s, it was believed that Mercury's rotation was such that it always presented the same face towards the Sun. Thus, one side of Mercury is extremely hot while the other side is very cold. It was thought at that time that there would be a small region between the two "hemispheres" that would have acceptible temperatures for a colony in the distant future. But space studies, particularly the Mariner 10 probe of 1974/1975, showed that this first planet from the Sun does indeed rotate (at a sidereal period of 58.6462 days). Since Mercury revolves around the sun in about 88 days, all of the planet's surface will get exposed to direct sunlight. However, the days and nights will be long. Both stories are good adventure tales for youth, even if outdated.
Great young sf fiction, though not the best of Lucky Starr.......1998-05-06
These two Lucky Starr adventures--the two middle--are less gripping than the other four. But they're still absorbing, Asimovian adventure with crisply written science and story. All the Lucky Starr adventures are an all-American treat for any age that likes science fiction--or even just straight Lone Ranger style fun!

The Lucky Starr series.......2002-01-03
The Lucky Starr series, while very short books, are a very enjoyable read. This series need to be read in order (at least read book one first). One of my old favorites, classic Sci-Fi.
A good science fiction yarn for youth, even if dated........1999-06-09
This is the fourth book in Asimov's Lucky Starr series for juveniles, originally published under the pseudonym Paul French. In this volume, David Starr and his partner travel to Mercury to investigate a series of accidents and setbacks of a research project (using light [in hyperspace] to supply energy). A Senator in the Earth government is pressuring the Council of Science with claims of waste on science projects (a story very familiar to real researchers today). Since Mercury revolves around the sun in about 88 days, all of the planet's surface will get exposed to direct sunlight. However, the days and nights will be long. Probes show that the surface temperatures will reach to 600-700 Kelvin (or, 327-427 degrees Celcius). Thus, in daylight lead would melt. But, at nighttime the surface temperature is about 95 Kelvin (or, -178 degrees Celcius), which is just above the boiling point (at one atmosphere pressure) of molecular oxygen. Of course the surface pressure of Mercury isn't 1.0 atm (it is estimated to be above 10-13 bars).

Scientifically dated, still well worth reading.......2007-03-03
This book is very dated, both in scientific fact and dialog. When written by Asimov using the pen name Paul French, the scientific knowledge concerning the properties of Mercury was quite different. Therefore, some aspects of the plot simply could not happen, as Asimov makes clear in the foreword.
Lucky and his companion Bigman Jones are on Mercury to investigate research being done on a potential new source of energy. Lucky is a representative of the powerful Council of Science and the need for new energy is critical. Shortly after Lucky's arrival on the planet, one of the chief engineers on the project tries to kill him. As usual, his hot temper gets Bigman in trouble. Lucky goes on the sunlit side to look for "ghosts while Bigman explores the abandoned mining tunnels. Each comes close to being killed but both find a way out of their predicament. The manner of the threat to their lives is such that it gives Lucky the knowledge he needs to solve the problem.
If you were to have read this book shortly after it came out, it would have been clear to you that Asimov was the author. Many of Asimov's ideas, such as the laws of robotics and the conflict with the Sirians are used in the plot. Although the advancement of science has rendered many aspects of this book obsolete, Asimov is such a good writer that it still can be read with pleasure.
Isaac Asimov Writing as Paul French.......2006-06-01
Though Isaac Asimov, one of the principal forces behind modern science fiction, wrote this book under a pseudonym, he eventually tired of the pseudonym and began putting all sorts of clues into these books that should have led most readers to figure out the actual author. I will leave a reader to learn those clues for themselves.
In this book, the fourth in the Lucky Starr series, Lucky and his friend Bigman journey to Mercury to try and learn who is sabotaging an important series of experiments. The plot thickens as Lucky attempts to mislead the leader of the Mercury expedition, an overweight bully, and even Lucky's big-mouthed sidekick, Bigman.
Lucky and Bigman journey through the abandoned mines of Mercury, learning of the hazards in the mine, on the surface, and in the project. Yet, as always, Lucky and Bigman prevail over all, bring the culprits to justice, and ride off into the sunset.
Look for this book also collected in a single volume with "Lucky Starr and the Rings of Saturn" and "Lucky Starr and the Moons of Jupiter." That book is titled "The Further Adventures of Lucky Starr." This book is also collected in "The Complete Adventures of Lucky Starr." Other collections may exist.
The Lucky Starr books are a casual read and perfect for readers who enjoyed the Tom Corbett, Space Cadet series of books and Heinlein's juvenile books. There is a lot of logic in each of the books, and just enough hard science fiction to tantalize a reader and hopefully cause the reader to learn more. These books do have a flavor of Asimov's other books, but are less sophisticated. I enjoy these books, but some other readers find them too mundane. I recommend these books carefully, because I do not know which category of reader you may be. Good luck!

At the Feet of the Master...Priceless!.......2006-11-10
At the Feet of the Master is an absolute treasure, worth the price of the entire book.
Light on the Path and the Voice of the Silence may be equally good to some, but is very deep and not for the novice. Difficult to follow...at least for me and I don't consider myself a novice.
the best intro to a master's thinking and life.......2000-12-11
There are a daunting number -- and a broad range -- of books by and about Krishnamurti. This is a superb starting point for the beginner who's seeking to understand why he still commands such an enormous worldwide audience, as it is for the reader who can only begin to imagine what it must have required for Krishnamurti to renounce his childhood designation by the worldwide Theosophist movement as an Avatar come to Earth.
For the open-minded and inquisitive reader this man becomes a powerful presence -- even after the book and his thinking/action in the world are long "forgotten".
Once through this helpful volume, you can move on to any one of his accessible but often thcik writings.

Customer Reviews:
Great book!.......2001-12-03
I love the Great Bread Machine Recipes book. I not only use it all the time but I also buy it as gifts for those that have bread machines. It's excellent. I would highly recommend it.
Great reference for any bread machine user.......2000-10-18
We have many friends with bread machines, and use our own a fair amount. This is a book we all agree on, regardless of which kind of machine we use.
The opening section has information on types of bread machines and conversion tables to figure out how to adjust a recipe, if you need to. This makes the book useful regardless of which machine you use. It also lists various problems people tend to have when using bread machines, and lists ways to fix each one.
The recipes are delicious! My copy of the book has a permanent crease on the Italian Bread recipe, which I make all the time. It lists a nutritional analysis for each recipe, so you know exactly how many calories, sodium, fat, etc. are in the bread. There are cheese breads, herb breads, oat breads, sourdough, you name it.
If you're looking into a bread machine, or have one already, be sure to get this book!
Customer Reviews:
Truly great.......2004-05-18
I have tried many of the recipes in this book and have yet to find one that is poor. I especially recommend the Chocolate Cherry Loaf, Pear Cardamom Bread, Pizza Crust Dough, and the regular and wheat French breads. The flavors are well-balanced and the recipes easy to follow. You should also try the Turkey Stuffing Bread -- you make your own herb-flavored croutons that are ready to turn into stuffing. Just like the stuffing mix you buy in the store! (Better!)
I would and do recommend this book highly. I use it often and am always pleased with the results.

Customer Reviews:
In need of an update.......2005-07-26
Wow. When I bought this book, I wish I'd taken note of the fact that all the positive reviews were from 2000 and 2001. The table of contents looked like it had everything I wanted to know about, but when I got the book and started to read it, I realized that it was WAY out of date. Most of the coverage of eBay, at least, refers to features that are either no longer available or that have changed radically. It also gives you tips on things like the checkout process that eBay now does for you.
There are still some useful tips in here--after all, advice on how to use keywords in your listings and how to pack for shipping never gets out of date--but I'd highly recommend getting a more recent book like O'Reilly's "eBay Hacks, Second Edition". I found that one a LOT more useful and relevant.
Should have had a yellow jacket, and read "for dumbies"........2002-02-02
This book was very weak in content. It provides few noteworthy pointers. It is basically a common sense walk-through, of how to view an auction business. If you aren't a complete idiot, you probably have no use for this book.
Like An Inexpensive Crash Course On Online Auctions.......2001-11-01
When I finished reading this book, I felt like an "auction expert"... even though I've never bid or sold items on an online auction before. It seems to have many good tips only experience can teach you. I felt I learned all I needed in this book to get a good start. It appears there are no loose ends or anything left out. Very complete with urls to web resources such as appraisers, automation and tracking software to making selling at auctions a business.
Excellent book to help you sell.......2001-07-07
Like the other reviewer, I'm not a high-volume Ebay seller but I do run some auctions every month. This book covered a great deal of what I wanted to know about how to run my auctions and make them more profitable. It has a wealth of information on alternate auctions sites too.
Highly recommended for anyone who wants to get going on eBay.
Excellent--a must for anyone who bids or sells........2000-11-26
I'm not high-volume seller, but I run two dozen or so auctions per month on ebay and Amazon. This book is absolutely indispensable! It covers general info about auctions, how to handle problem customers, reviews of auction management software (this alone has made my business 100% better), pros and cons of the various sites, shipping methods, and pretty much everything else you needed to know. Whether you're a buyer or a seller, you need this book!

- Steer clear of hype, dead ends, and time-wasters
- Organize a family reunion
Customer Reviews:
A BIT TOO SIMPOLISTIC BUT GOOD INDEX.......2006-08-07
This book is a bit too simplistic but if used as a reference, looking up what you need via the index, it is fine. Otherwise it reads like a dictionary or an encyclopedia.
Far from the best, but not bad.......2002-07-23
It seems there's a new computer-genealogy "how to" book being released every month -- more the result of the marketing department's presumed wisdom than because we need yet another such volume. This is especially true when genealogy is simply one in a long line of topics: There are now "Unofficial Guides" to wine, children, stock picking, job interviews, and menopause. However, each volume in this series is prepared with the assistance of a panel of experts -- in this case Matthew Helm (publisher of the JOURNAL OF ONLINE GENEALOGY), John Scroggins (who received the FGS Award of Merit for his efforts in increasing public access to government files of interest to family researchers), and Tim Stowell (active in the USGenWeb project). Actually, the advice and information you'll receive here is pretty good, including setting up a computer workspace, the difference between primary and secondary sources, setting your research goals, managing your information as you find it, how to find genealogy web sites (method as well as a list of addresses), strategic tips for online research, the proper use of search engines and online library catalogs, creating personal genealogy web pages, and publishing a book as well as publishing to the web. The style is not unlike the popular "Dummies' Guides," with tips, time-savers, caveats, and informative sidebars scattered throughout.
Great sources for online genealogy research.......2001-10-04
Author Pamela Rice Hahn has written a book that is aimed at genealogists hoping to learn more about using the power and advantages of the Internet to assist them in their search for information about their ancestors. Each chapter in the book covers the basics of learning about genealogy while recommending web sites that will supplement the information presented.
The first chapter describes some of the common documents that every genealogist needs to have in their family files. Learning what to expect from an online search for records is an important lesson. Even though the number of vital records available online is increasing every day, you will still find the bulk of your documents at courthouses, libraries and archives. Chapter 2 gives ideas and tips for organizing your home work space and getting online. Since you are reading this online article, I'll assume that you've handled that part of the setup.
The next two chapters cover organizing all the accumulated papers, charts, and forms that you will be collecting at an alarming rate. The advice I found most helpful was the idea of setting up a research notebook that includes enough information to aid you in your research trips without bogging you down with copies of every record in your collection. This section also includes ideas for setting up a full filing system and choosing a genealogy database software.
Chapter 5 describes the various types of information available online. I never knew I could do this!.......2000-12-03
I have been interested in Genealogy for some time now and never thought it was possible to pursue it so thoroughly the Internet! One of the reasons that I bought this book is that I am not an "Internet expert" by any stretch. In the process of learning how to find information on genealogy I learned a few things about my computer. I live way up in Canada and regardless of where you live, this book is a must have for anyone interested in the subject.
I especially liked the step-by-step process that begins with teaching you first how to use the necessary tools to accomplish your goals and ending with results you were after. In any subject that interests me I hate to buy a book that reminds me of the dry texts I read back in school. I have seen them while wandering bookstores and despite the fact the subject interests me I will not buy it. This book was nothing like any of those books, which was very refreshing.
* Helps anyone not particularly well versed in the Internet get started with learning the necessary tools.
* Takes a well thought out step-by-step approach to attainting your ultimate goal.
* I thought it was very well laid out and easy to read.
Can't get all the information you need without this book!.......2000-11-25
For a lot of people, the courthouse is where the search for the bulk of your family's background research begins. This book has great information on how to go about getting the most out of that research.
*I also like how the author put all of the links from the book online at GenelogyTips.com. That means I don't have to type them in; she's done it for me!
*I recommend this book because the writing is easy to understand yet full of information.

Book Description
Central to this study is the image of the deer within the iconography of the Early Nomads of South Siberia. By examining the symbolic structures revealed in the art and archaeology of the Early Nomads, the author challenges existing theories regarding Early Nomadic cosmology. The reconstruction of meanings embedded in the deer image carries the investigation back to rock carvings, paintings, and monolithic stelae of South Siberia and northern Central Asia, from the Neolithic period down through the early Iron Age. The succession of images dominating that artistic tradition is considered against the background of cultures -- including the Baykal Neolithic Afanasevo, Okunev, Andronovo, and Karasuk -- evolving from a hunting-fishing dependency to a dependency on livestock. The archaic mythic traditions of specific Siberian groups are also found to lend critical detail to the changing symbolic systems of South Siberia.

I only wish there was more of it.-My only reason for one less star.

Excellent artwork of glamour past! Gil Elvgren just seems to have the touch that competes with Vargas and most all the Glamour artists!
Wholesome, Innocent, Sensual and Sexy All at the Same Time.......2005-10-20
There was a time, before pantyhose, when a woman's legs wrapped in nylon, were magnets for men's eyes. not that they aren't now, men still look, they always will, but nylons, with that line down the back of the leg and the darker band at the top and a hint of garters, wow! Also, back then, in those days pre Wonder Bra and breast augmentations, there were pinup girls and there were paintings of pinup girls. And the best of these artists who painted pinup girls was Gil Elvgren. His girls, those beauties he painted, somehow managed to look wholesome, innocent, sensual and sexy all at the same time. And his paintings really show just how beautiful a woman's legs were/are when they're incased in nylons, especially when you can see those garters. I know, I know, pantyhose are more comfortable, garters are cumbersome, awkward and uncomfortable, yes they are. But they sure as heck used to make a woman's legs look good. I think so anyway. I also think that this book would make a wonderful addition to any coffee table.

Book Description
1919. The object of this book is to give English readers the material necessary for a full understanding of one of the greatest and most interesting Italian mystical poets: Jacopone da Todi, the typical singer of the Franciscan movement, the first writer of philosophic religious poetry, and perhaps the most picturesque figure in the history of early Italian literature.
