I didn't know that camels menstruate...and the Virgen La Soledad in Oaxaca was missing her legs...

I couldn't put this book down. The story of Katy Cooper's search for her real parents takes her from California to India to Oaxaca,Mexico and in the meantime her journey takes twists and turns that focus on the stories of the other women who accompany her search. The storytelling is seamless even as the author weaves three and four different stories in one telling. I like the voices,laughter, sadness, secrets, childhood memories, and the ghosts. The stories are historical:lives torn apart by the partition of India and Pakistan, the colonization of India, the migration from Mexico to El Norte, the diaspora of peoples as told in the fate of a family sari. But in this novel, the author conveys that history need not be overdeterministic and the gift of storytelling can create new worlds, heal old wounds, and foster hope.

Good book, crap editor.......2005-02-04

I finally read Blade: Trinity as back up to seeing the film and it was great to have the extra bits and early shooting script information. It was a fun read and Im glad I picked it up to suppliment the story but does the author not have an editor? I agree with the spelling and grammatical errors being terribly distracting and this can only be attributed to an absentee editor. To say nothing of the "British-isms". If the writer is British that's fine, it's her job to write the book but its the editors job to **edit**. That was just annoying.

A Stake in the Heart...After Tea.......2005-02-01

For a book north of 400 pages, "Blade: Trinity" was a very quick read. That is a compliment. With that many pages I would have expected the story to get bogged down and/or lose stride here and there. Instead, the author's pacing was fantastic. I was tossed from one intense scene to the next. At certain points in the action, I really could not put the book down.

I read "Blade: Trinity" immediately after reading the only other novelization from this trilogy of movies; "Blade." The same guy wrote both scripts so I guess it shouldn't be too surprising that the novels linked nicely. Interestingly, although "Blade: Trinity" made many accurate references to the first movie and book, any reference to Blade's romantic interest from the first movie is almost consciously excised from this third installment.

One tiny peeve about the "Blade: Trinity" novel: despite the American cast, set and context of the Blade story, the British author of this book seems to have deliberately peppered the text with English cultural references. In books starring James Bond, Modesty Blaise or Dr. Who, passing references to eating a "cucumber sandwich," making a "flying rugby tackle," or Peter Cushing as Dracula make sense. However identical references in "Blade: Trinity" were out of place and distracting. Merely "sandwich," "flying tackle" and Bela Lugosi would have sufficed for any culture. The worst of these references is when the author describes a character as an "eighteen-stone" vampire. An average American reader does not have a clue what "eighteen-stone" means (it is 252 pounds for any curious Americans).

Notwithstanding, "Blade: Trinity" was fun reading. Now I might just catch the movie...

Blade: Trinity what it should have been.......2004-12-31

First of all no one seems to have stayed past the end credits of the movie, because if they had they would have seen Blade alive and well and driving his car! The body at the end of the film was Dracula/Drake. He changed himself to let Blade go on fighting because he thought Blade, unlike the other vampires even, had honor.
My complaints with the film were scenes mimicing encounters with Deaon Frost from the first film. Deacon kidnaps a little girl to use as a hostage and later throws her into traffic, Dracula kidnaps a baby and later throws it off a roof, both scenes forcing Blade to choose saving the hostage over killing the vampire. Worst of all was to resurrect the consumate vampire and then not do anything with him. Plus, the Nightstalkers, which was originally a comicbook series had nothing to do with this story.
As for the book, as with the first Blade movie the story is based on an earlier script not the shooting script and gives considerably more details than the film, which make it worth buying.

Ear Deafing Finale!.......2004-12-13

I just got back from watching Blade Trinity, and all I can say is I'm half- deaf, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. The action in this film is indeed jam- packed and leaves you breathless. Blade is once more the powerful, cocky emotionless statue he has always been with a few quirky bandmates now, the leader of this band called Night Stalkers a woman named Abby, whom is the actual daughter of Whistler. (I know, in the first Blade he said his family died but supposedly this was later when he re- married.) Abby grew up wanting to be in the same business and now is a lean mean killing machine with her high- tech cross bow. Her group helps Blade out with some new weapons including a fatal tool that could finish off the vampire race for good at long last. But they must hurry and do this for Dracula has come back, the true Dracula supposedly. He is quite modern and aside from what critics in the paper have said, pretty cool...er, for Dracula, or now he calls himself Drake for short. He's set out with a group of vampires (one being the wrestler Triple H, if haven't noticed) to destroy Blade and even Blade needs to admit he needs Abby and her quirky but intelligent Night Stalkers to help him defeat Dracula, and the rest of the race once and for all. The only dilemma? If this new tool hits Dracula, and all vampires are dead...what will happen to Blade? Blade goes on anyway though, knowing it's the only thing to be done. Dracula must go.
So on they go in breath- taking and ear- deafening battles with many vampires and familiars with their great and very painful punches and kicks and finishing off with those awesome weapons they always have, not resting until they find Dracula, and save we humans from utter doom. What kept this from being five stars was just the mere fact of a few small things. Like there are some lame sex jokes, dogs that turn into vampires...just a few weird little things that are hardly in the film but still kind of silly. And possibly I just feel that Blade One will always be the best of the chronicles, even though Two and Three have been an excellent runner up.
Blade has been one of the best vampire films to come along in a long while, and I am sorry to depart from it. But he left us with an action- packed, vamp- whooping film that will leave all a little deaf...and a little more safer.

A Lazy Day for the Editor.......2004-11-24

I am a huge fan of the Blade series. I am very anxious to see the 3rd installment of it. I thought that the novelization of the movie would tide me over until the actual movie came out. I was right on that. It seems to be a very fun flick. My only problem with the book is the writing and editing. I imagine that the editor's job is to relieve the book of any grammatical errors and sloppy writing. Neither of those jobs were done. Instead of enjoying the book as much as I should have, I was constantly fighting my annoyance over such trivial mistakes. Long story short, if you're looking for a good way to precede the movie it's worth picking up, but don't expect too much from the writing. The movie comes out Dec. 8th so hopefully everyone will see it.

Good story.......2003-03-15

The year was 2013, the place was Alaska. Decades ago, Cassandra had breast cancer. Dr. Terrace Labriola would not allow his wife to have the breast removed. So he "preserved" his wife's body against her will. He created Project Resurrection to reanimate cryopreserved dead. However, he never thought about the souls of those "preserved bodies". The souls later were reborn in new bodies. Reincarnation. When Dr. Labriola reanimated the bodies, the souls were sucked OUT of the new bodies. Thus both bodies were in comas and the soul was stuck in "the in-between place".

LaNaya Seville was the project's physical therapist. She had died before, but did not make it to the after place before her body began functioning again and pulled her back. When she "awoke", she was an empathic healer. She used her title as physical therapist to hide the fact that she was using her unique gift to help heal her patients. She, and a few close others, learn of the stuck souls and rush to figure out how to help them before an evil beyond claims the souls and energies of the victims. Somehow, Project Resurrection had to be stopped...permanently! A highly entertaining read that will force its readers to sit up and take notice! Recommended reading here!

What happens when doctors steal souls in the name of science.......2001-09-10

Ms. Duvall explores the moral and ethical dilemma of reanimating cryogenically preserved bodies with a unique twist. Assuming that bodies require souls to be fully animate, where do these souls come from? The souls that once animated them have been reincarnated into other bodies and must be either called from their new bodies, or other, unembodied souls must be called forth to take their places. The heroine of Project Resurrection is the only one who recognizes the danger, since she is a mystically gifted Inuit descended from a long line of dark sorcerers. Although a ceremony when she was young broke the hold of ancestral evil upon her, she is still sensitive to its power and fears every time she uses her gifts that she may
slip under its control.

Unfortunately, that leads to the book's main weakness. Set up as a grand battle between darkness and light, the conflict is robbed of potency by a lack of conviction regarding the nature of evil. At various times, the heroine seems to believe in determinism (when a soul is tainted, the person can do nothing but evil), free will (a person always has a choice to succumb to or repudiate evil, regardless of past choices), and even behaviorism (a person's situation and upbringing lead to good or evil actions, regardless of the person's inner nature). Worse, this schizophrenic cosmology is projected onto the other characters, so she is sometimes trying to redeem them and sometimes condemning them for evil which they have not yet done.

If you can get past that obstacle, however, you should enjoy the detailed exploration of Inuit spiritual beliefs. The portrayal of medical experimentation conducted by doctors with god complexes is frighteningly realistic, as are the actions of overly aggressive news media and self serving special interest groups. This is a book to make you think and take action to avert a potential tragedy before it can happen.

A New Age twist on good versus evil.......2001-05-28

When I was a kid, there was an urban myth floating around that Walt Disney had himself cryopreserved (frozen). I always wondered about that; what would happen if the dead were brought back to life, decades, even centuries, after their deaths. Karen Duvall's new novel, Project Resurrection, tackles this issue, more on a science-fiction/New Age level than from a realistic viewpoint. The time is 2013, and many of the diseases that are currently incurable are no longer life threatening.

The novel takes the reader to Angakok, Alaska; the only place left in the world with air that can be breathed by humans. The temperatures are always sub-, subzero. There in Angakok, Project Resurrection is beginning to unfold. Dr. Terrance Labriola, the Project's founder, has built an elaborate scientific laboratory dedicated to bringing the thirty cryogenics back to life. Surrounded by his team, Terrance has success with his first patient/experiment (David Bodine), only to have the patient retreat into an unexplainable coma.

One member of the team, LaNaya Seville-a physical therapist---has a special gift as a "healer." LaNaya also has the ability to leave her body, while her soul journeys to the astral plane---the level between Heaven and Hell. This ability is a legacy from her Inua ancestors, an Alaskan tribe thought to be long annihilated. Though LaNaya relishes her gift to help others, she is fearful of her "dark" side---the Inua are known to engage in sorcery and evil---though it has yet to surface.

As the project continues, Terrance has more luck with the second patient/experiment. Kaiser is conscious, but he doesn't want to be resurrected; he was happy on the astral plane. He is unhappy in the new world he has yet to see outside his glass cubicle. LaNaya visits him on the astral plane, trying to determine the cause of David's coma.

With the success of Kaiser's reanimation, Labriola is ready to resuscitate his third patient/experiment, the person for whom he devoted his life to cryogenics, his gorgeous, still young, wife, Cassandra. But something was horribly wrong with Cassandra's death and follows her into her return. LaNaya returns again and again to the spirit world to help Cassandra, Kaiser, and David.

At first, the plot of Project Resurrection was a little hard to understand what was happening. But once the reader understands the situation, the plot becomes fascinating. The story is sometimes fast paced, sometimes slow. The battles between good and evil on the astral plane get a little redundant at times, but this novel is worth reading just to view the author's amazing imagination, if for nothing else.

A real page turner.......2001-02-21

I loved the book, I started reading it on the plane coming home from vacation, and couldn't put it down. Really makes you think about the after life, and what it really could mean. A real science fiction, romance story, with alot of adventure.

Bounds is good but this collection is too edited..........2002-11-16

Words are inserted in this version that change the meaning of certain thoughts and take away from its power. Bounds is still good though - it's just better to get it the way he wrote it. Buy The Complete Works of E.M. Bounds on Prayer published by Baker instead. (That version was also changed to use modern language but definitely compares better than this version.)

You'll Find Some Way, Way Good Fondues in this Delightful Book.......2006-07-16

Seven years ago my husband Dub and I sailed into Whangarai Harbour in New Zealand. On our way in I spied some friends or ours, Gayle and John, who we'd met in Tahiti. They were Kiwis and they were ending their five year circumnavigation, home at last. We anchored close to their boat and later dinghied over for sundowners (usually Coke and Rum). That evening, as usual, we told tall tales of our adventures at sea and we congratulated ourselves on being in this wonderful place at this wonderful time. Later, as we were saying our goodbyes, Gayle gave me her set of the Salamandar Book of Series Cookbooks. They are sold by HP Books in the States as paperbacks. Gayle carried these books around the planet and now she was giving them to me, complete with her notes (written in the books) on the recipes, how well she and John liked certain dishes, which were their favorites, how hard they were to prepare. She knew I was a cook and she thought I'd appreciate them. She was right.

Like all the books in the series "The Book of Fondues" is about five inches wide and about a foot tall, making them kind of unique among cookbooks. But one should not be put off because of the odd shape, these are real books and you can find mighty darned good recipes in them although one might wonder if it was necessary to devote a whole book to fondue. I know I did at first, but once I got into the book, it quickly became one of my favorites. After all, what better way to start an evening than with a Coke and Rum and some delicious fondue as you watch that lucky old sun fade away. Here you'll find fondues of all stripes and flavors from the Classic Swiss Fondue on Page 10 to the Creamy Kiwi Dip at the end of the book. Almost of these fondues are, as my friend Jack Priest's young son Devon would say, "Way, way good!"

Better title would be dips.......2005-10-11

I was looking for a more traditional fondue cook book and this was not it. It would have been better titled dips. I was very dissapointed. There were more dips rather than true fondue type cooking. Additionally there was very little in the way of directions or clrification. There were lovely pictures though.

Good for Hot Pot Too.......2003-12-27

This book has served me well for both fondue and Mongolian hot pot meals. I would agree that it isn't a book for beginners, as you have to improvise a bit to get exactly what you want. . . but it is good for providing a jumping off point. For those who like to cook meats in broth instead of oil, the book has several simple and tasty recipes for dipping sauces spread throughout the book.

Great introduction........2003-01-29

In its roughly 50 parts, all written by experienced cooks and cook book writers, HP Books' "The Book of ... Cooking" series takes you to the cuisines of various regions of the U.S. and around the world; all in easy to follow, well-explained recipes.

This installment, the Book of Fondues, starts with a brief introduction of the equipment necessary for fondue-making, and then presents recipe suggestions for all major types of fondues, from cheese to dessert fondues. Special chapters are dedicated to deep-fried fondues, accompaniments, seafood fondues, vegetable fondues, hotpots, vegetable dips and fruit dips. There are also menu suggestions for starters, main courses, accompaniments and desserts; and the book ends with six suggestions for complete menus built around the recipes described here. Classics such as fondue Bourguignonne, Swiss fondue and mushroom fondue appear next to unique dishes such as anchovy mayonnaise, blackcurrant cassis fondue, crab and cheese dip, Drambuie cream fondue, hot berry compote, marshmallow cream fondue, praline fondue, raspberry cream, peppermint fondue, spiced plum puree, fruity duck fondue, and wine and cherry sauce.

From aioli, almandine trout and almond clusters to yellow bean sauce and yogurt dressing, this collection of recipes is a great introduction to the endless possibilities of making a meal out of food dipped into hot oil or a delicious sauce - and at a relative bargain price, to boot. Great Book for a Narrow Cooking Category.......2001-04-30

I think some people expected a two-book 1,000 page volume about how to do Fondue when they got this book. For $10 this book is outstanding as every single recipe has color photos and good instructions. I have made 50% of the fondues in the book for entertaining and there was not one that I served to guests that didn't stop all other conversation and make the party a hit. So far, all of the recipes have been unbelievably delicious and unique. This was my first experiment with "The Book Of..." cooking series and made me look at the other 50 or so titles. The book assumes that you have some basic knowledge of cooking.

Good recipes in this book and very nice acompanying color pictures with descriptions. I have such a soft spot for these70's style cook books and this one fits the bill perfectly!

This is a wonderful book--best plain swiss cheese/gruyere fondue. Also creamy ham rolls. Fried cheese. Out of print, grab this if you can get it, no matter what the condition, you won't regret it, I lOVE mine, have lovingly used it for over 25 years.

This is a fabulous fondue cookbook. Fondue cooking has regained popularity in recent years. However, fondue pots and fondue cookbooks are hard to find. This is a really good cookbook for any level of fondue chef! It includes menus, and recipes for every course, party ideas, and chafing dish favorites! You will love this cookbook!

Don't buy this book.......2005-07-05

I was totally disappointed with Fondue It! I expected a jumping off point closer to traditional fondue, but instead, the majority of the book deals with elaborate recipes -- spring rolls, grilled polenta -- that are better suited to kitchen preparation, not around the fondue pot, with full guest interaction. Also, the book was laid out in an amateurish, hard to follow way. It was really not what I, as an experienced cook but a beginner at home fondue, was looking for.

I purchased this book for my cousin as a Christmas present this year. I looked at all of the recipes and decieded that I needed a fondue pot! My husband got me the fondue pot, now I must get this book. There is such a variety of things to make in this book from your basic cheese fondue to dishes I hadn't even thought of making in a fondue pot.

okay, but not great.......2002-12-18

This is not a bad book on bedrooms, if you are just starting out exploring interior decoration. The pictures are nice and the text fairly informative. However, for interior design junkies there is no new ground covered here, especially if you already own several books on bedrooms. I was not inspired by the photos. Probably because the style seems kind of bland to me.
