In the intervening years she learned the dual importance of concealment and discovery in language and the vital connections among story, politics, and personal survival.

Epic story, painterly art.......2005-11-20

Jodorowsky and Gimenez have put together all the pieces that make a comic great. The story is a star-spanning saga of the Metabarons' rise to power, told one episode at a time. The characters are larger than life, in their pain, in revenge, and in their six-back abs. Or is that an eight-pack? Ten? Well, if more muscles are good, more more must be better.

The artwork is good, too. The human figures project power and strength, or venality and corruption as called for. Space ships, cities, and weapons are all drawn (painted?) with fine attention to detail. The stories collected in this book are all good ones, by one robot in the Metabaron's household for the benefit of another. Like any good comic story, plausibility occasionally defers to dramatic need, so most of those battles with zap guns and high-tech armor end up as sword fights.

There are two reasons I didn't give this five stars. First, the language is stilted and synthetic, like a string of potholes in the narrative path. Second, as much as I liked the story and the way that the characters pushed it forward, the characters themselves just didn't engage me. Parhaps they came and went too soon, perhaps their warrior ethos and majesty crowded out the rest of their personalities. It's a good comic anyway, and I'm coming back for more.

By the way, this is another title from DC's Humanoids series. Bilal and the Schuitens did other work in this series, some of the best around. Too bad DC had to shut that series down.

A low point in the Venus Prime series.......2005-07-13

I read the first three books in a matter of a few days, but this one took almost two weeks. I think Preuss was trying to setup alot of the series story arc in this book, but it just made for an extremely boring read. I actually feel asleep about midway through the book and it took me at least a week before I wanted to pick it back up. Unlike the other books this one does not work as a stand alone, too much information regarding Sparta's and Blakes's pasts is necessary to understand the plot twists and conspiracy theories that run throughout this book.

I only recommend this book if you've read the previous three books in the series.

There are surprises galore in this latest in the Venus Prime series, among them revalations about the Commander, changes in Sparta's views on things, and the central surprise which would be rude to reveal.

As Preuss says in his notes after the novel's conclusion, this book is setting up more events in the future, while still being a good read when held alone. I'd read the first three Venus Prime books in one weekend, and then had to wait months for the fourth. Hopefully, the next books in the series will arrive more quickly, but if not, at least I know they will be well-written.

Simple, sumptuous, and satisfying food.......2003-12-20

I was so pleased to find a cookbook that used simple ingredients and had quick recipes to make such elegant, delicious fare. Also, as the recipes are intended for two people, I don't have to worry about storing a ton of leftovers. Many of the recipes are great for any season. Another thing that may be overlooked is the selection of delectable meatless dishes, making this a good purchase or gift for a vegetarian, or someone who just doesn't eat a lot of meat. (Meat lovers, fear not! We are not overlooked by any means.) The author also includes tidbits on substitutions and serving suggestions. The wine suggestions are also handy; the right wine really can enhance a meal.

From a casual lunch with a friend or dinner with a significant other, this book allows you to plan any kind of meal your heart desires, and not be exhausted from preparing.

The ability to find all of the ingredients at my local grocer, the lack of bulky leftovers, and the variety of yummy foods ensure I'll always have this book in my kitchen.

I wonder if a reader from Plaino, TX read the same book or if a reader somehow got confused when reviewing Home Bistro? This is a book in which EVERY RECIPE HAS A SHORT LIST OF INGREDIENTS. In fact, it is the perfect "last minute" cookbook, which is how veteran author Betty Fussell describes it. Small in size, it is the perfect book to glance through after a long day at work, sitting on the stool in your kitchen, watching the tv news while trying to figure out how to rest your soul by enlivening your palate. Fussell's aim is to suggest one dish meals, although she does offer valuable side-dish and wine go-togethers. And her one-dish meals are not the "hot dish" of Lake Woebegone fame or your mother-in-laws dry macaroni and cheese with a corn-flake topping (yuck!), but imaginative meals that draw on European, New World and Asian traditions. Let's face, what is more relaxing and more rewarding, 1.) a meal made up of take-aways from the deli where the mayonnaise always tastes suspicious; 2.) a meal made up of convenience food from supermarket boxes; 3.) a meal made from simple and fresh ingredients that can be ready in the time it takes to cook frozen french fries? For me, three is the answer and that is part of the reason why I like Fussell's book.

Too Fussy, Too Many Ingredients.......2000-08-22

This is probably a great little cookbook for the gourmet cook. However, this is not what I was looking for. I want classy recipes with no more than 8 ingredients (and preferrably less than that) that take a minimum amount of preparation. Most recipes in this book have many ingredients and quite a few call for things I've never even heard of (such as cardamom), and things that I do not have on hand. It's fairly small - I scanned every recipe in less than half an hour. The author does include wine suggestions for each item, if you are interested in that. I am returning my copy.

Spectacular quality recipes, wonderful food........1998-07-24

I purchased this book on a whim and was absolutely thrilled with the quality of the recipes. I was so impressed that I purchased an additional copy for my daughter and her husband and now she is sold on the book as well. The recipes are are simple to prepare and the result is mouth watering. I have yet to find any dish I didn't like. If you like exciting tastes, you will love this book.

There is history, stories, and it is a fun book for a button lover. Covers know how and fun stuff. Delightful read, hard to put down.

Anyone even thinking about getting a German shepherd dog simply must get this book! This book is full of information on German shepherd dog history,grooming,feeding,training,and healthcare. It is very informative,interesting,and the ideal book for raising a happy and healthy German shepherd dog.

Excellent editing book.......2004-09-03

First, full disclosure: The authors and I DON'T share the same publisher ;-).

Much more than a traditional Final Cut Pro guide, Digital Editing is written from the perspective of a filmmaker rather of a technician. It does something extremely rare for a book about editing -- it's a page-turner.

I like the tone and the "real filmmaker" angle of working with the editing package. I especially found the information relating to traditional analog editing fascinating and important. It gives the book a sense of tried-and-true experience lacking in other FCP books.

Also, a simple but very important aspect was the lined-script example. I haven't seen this in other FCP books and thought it was great. This type of information brings a comprehensive structure to the process of filmmaking. Editing doesn't happen in a vacuum, as many editing books seem to assume, but instead starts in pre-production when shooting decisions are made.

Wonderful read.

More than just a Final Cut Pro book! .......2004-08-14

First, full disclosure: The authors and I share the same publisher.

That being said, Bruce Mamer (with Jason Wallace) has written a terrific book about editing, disguised as a book about Final Cut Pro 4. Don't get me wrong -- it's also a great book about how to use that wonderful non-linear editing program. It's better than the manual or any other book I've seen on the topic! But, sprinkled throughout the discourse on how to get the most out of the Final Cut Pro program is a well-thought out primer on the basics of editing, which is worth the price of the book alone.

In addition to the text, the book also includes a DVD with a tutorial and footage that you can use to try your hand at putting together a dramatic scene.

Whether shooting on video or film, this book will get you from the first day of editing to your final release print or master tape. And, even though I've used Final Cut Pro for years and cut tons of videos (and one feature) on it, the book provided a plethora of tips that even surprised an old hand like myself.

If you want to master the basics of editing -- and learn about Final Cut Pro 4 in the process -- buy this book. You'll use it for years.

For anyone who wants to learn editing, not just how to manipulate a computer editing system (Final Cut Pro version 4), this book is a "must have." Written by two editor-director-producer-teachers committed to helping others make good films, it shows the reader the reasons to make an edit as well as the keyboard strokes required to execute it. I've read many manuals and editing theory books over the years and this book combines the two in readily accessible manner that gives the reader a strong start toward becoming an editor.
The book's 322 pages contain numerous, supportive photos and illustrations and a short glossary. Best of all, the book comes with a DVD containing a 45 minute tutorial for Mac or PC and 5 gigabytes of footage for cutting a dramatic scene on a Mac OS X with Final Cut Pro 4 software. The book describes how to cut the scene from start to finish, not choosing the exact edits or pushing the buttons for aspiring editors, but enabling them to do so. When done with the book and cutting the scene, the reader will have solid, practical editing experience along with a finished scene to show for their efforts.

Informative look at interracial marriage in the early 20th.......2000-01-31

century. I enjoyed reading about their relationship. I found the way Mae Franking tried to become a good Chinese wife very interesting. I found the original edition of this book in my college library. In the original, there are no pictures and it was written by M.F. This new annotated edition gives pictures and dates, so it really helps the reader to picture the story. The book was fascinating, and sad because they both died quite early in life.
