Book Description
The extraordinary saga of the mysterious life of Kurban Said was told in amazing detail in a recent New Yorker article. One of the most beguiling mysteries it uncovered was the existence of another magical novel The Girl From the Golden Horn. It is being published in English now for the first time.
It is 1928 and Asiadeh Anbara and her father, members of the Turkish royal court, find themselves in exile in Berlin after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. Years ago she had been promised to a Turkish prince but now, under the spell of the West, the nineteen-year-old Muslim girl falls in love and marries a Viennese doctor, an "unbeliever." But when she again meets the princenow a screenwriter living in exile in New Yorkand he decide he wants her as his wife, she is torn between the marriage she made in good faith and her promised duty made long ago.
The Girl From the Golden Horn is a novel of the clash of cultures and valuesof prewar Istanbul and decadent postwar Berlin. And, of course, Muslims and Christians. But it is also about the clash within Asiadeh herself, and the tension between duty and desire. The Girl From the Golden Horn is an insinuatingly and strikingly beautiful novelsuspenseful and exoticand Kurban Said is, once again, in full control of his power to entertain and enthrall.
Translated by Jenia Graman.

Bodice-ripper for intellectuals.......2007-06-17
After reading THE ORIENTALIST I was interested in reading some of Kurban Said's fiction. ALI AND NINO was not available, so I picked up THE GIRL FROM THE GOLDEN HORN. This is a very peculiar book, I think. The heroine is an intelligent young female member of the exiled Turkish royal family studying Oriental languages in Weimar Berlin. She attracts the attention of a recently divorced young doctor who woos her. I was appalled when she writes a letter to the missing prince she was betrothed to stating that she wants nothing more than to be his slave and wash his feet, but if she does not hear from him, she will marry the doctor. I just don't understand this sensibility. But as I continued reading I felt that I gained some insight into the mentality of the Muslim woman. The novel is at its best when it depicts the woman navigating her way through an alien culture that is extremely decadent in comparison to her upbringing. Although I could not identify with her, I did understand her sense of displacement and did empathize with her during a painful chapter when she feels that she is a complete outsider at a social engagement. I think we've all been there at one time or another. Said captured the experience quite well. I guess the novel would best be described as a romance novel for intellectuals. It has many elements of a romance novel: a mysterious playboy prince, a rich and handsome young doctor, exotic locations in Europe, North Africa and Asia, costume balls, posh resorts and an attempted rape. But the heroine is an intellectual able to discuss religion, philosophy, history, anthropology and medicine in numerous languages. This is not the usual milieu of the romance genre. As a novel, it is far too dependent upon coincidence to be considered a first-rate work, but I nonetheless found it an interesting and insightful reading experience.
Love and the clash of cultures in pre-war Vienna.......2004-03-25
"The Girl from the Golden Horn" is an insightful novel about two mismatched but well-meaning people. Asiadeh, an upper class Turkish girl living in European exile meets a Hasa, a Viennese doctor. They fall in love, marry, and try to overcome the cultural differences between them, He cannot comprehend her "wild" Turkish nature, and she cannot understand his "modern" outlook, let alone the behavior of his friends. Always in the background are Asiadeh's sense of duty to the Ottoman prince to whom she was betrothed as a child and and Hasa's memories of his unfaithful ex-wife. Although Said wrote the book specifically about expatriate Muslims in a Christian Europe, there is much about the loss of the past and the longing for home that transcends the specific characters and situations. The story is told with wit and lyricism and is a good read for anyone trying to understand the dislocations of losing one's homeland and culture.

Shoot, Drink, Smoke, Eat........2006-07-15
From Saiyuki, Vol. 1 to Saiyuki Reload 4, the amazing detail on this amazing writing on this amazing author and illustrator is... well... amazing. Their adventures throughout the Yukai Demon world is tough, and their adventure through trying to get Goku some food is... very tough, but they make it through with the understandable, unnaceptable written works, that I believe should someday become a legend.
Priest fetish, anyone?.......2006-01-22
I started reading this purely because my friend had it...Just wish I'd got to it sooner is all I can say!
Saiyuki has to be one of my favourite mangas, and I'm still only halfway through the series so far. The plot is great; with the exact balance between humour, action and hotness (oh yeah!). And, to add to this, the artwork is truly amazing....and hot...
I'd recommend this to anyone into manga: though it does have certain side effects....priest fetish, anyone??
About this series........2005-11-03
This is based on either a book-book or a REALLY old Japanese tale (that part I can't remember specifically) but I DO know that the mangaka DID intend it to be slashy! She's a BL author, in fact, everything I've found under her name is a "Boys Love" novel. I was happy to learn this; it met that Gojyo tease-flirting Goku like the pair in Legal Drug wasn't just all-in-my-head wishfull thinking. I think girls in Japan like "uke" Sanzo because he reminds them of Takuto Izumi from Zetsuai, or Eiri Yuki from Remix Gravitation.
Aside from the yaoi-factor, the story itself is excellent with a pepped up humorous take on the story it's inspired/based on. Don't think that the entire manga is the anime word-for-word, picture-for-picture....it only starts that way & takes a different turn at some point.
Saiyuki is one good manga!.......2005-10-27
I was introduced to this manga by one of my friends who knew what appealed to me and said I would love Saiyuki. She didn't tell me anything about it, didn't say how I would soon fall in love. This is a story loosely (very, very loosely) based on the Chinese tale The Journey to the West, and in Japanese, this tale is called Saiyuki. In Shangri-La, demons and humans have been living peacefully. One day, the demons suddenly start ripping the humans apart. This is what leads to Sanzo, a gun toting, chain-smoking "priest", Goku, a 500 year old gluttonous monkey demon, Gojyo, a drinking, gambling, half demon ladies man, and Hakkaku, a kind hearted, soft-spoken demon to become the saviors of their homeland by finding out just what's going down inm their journey to the west. This one hell of a good shojo/shonen manga read, but I think that the art stlye will appear mostly to girls. I know it did to me.
Great insights of Gojyo not covered in the anime!.......2005-05-14
The cover of vol. 7 of Saiyuki features Gojyo for good reason, this one is all his. In a continuation of a story started in vol. 6, Gojyo and Sanzo must team up to deal with a child seems to have killed Goku and Hakkai! Can they resurrect their friends before it's too late (and more importantly, before Sanzo kills Gojyo himself?)?
A great storyline that didn't make it into the original 50 episode anime series, this is an absolute must for Saiyuki fans.

Book Description
Electronic mechanic Jennings wakes up with no memory of the past two years of his life -- except that he had agreed to work for Retherick Construction.Payment for his services, now completed, is a bag of seemingly worthless objects: a code key, a ticket stub, a receipt, a length of wire, half a poker chip, a piece of green cloth and a bus token. But when he is confronted by the Special Police, who seem to be investigating Retherick for their own reasons, Jennings finds himself running for his life, realizing that the "worthless" objects are the key to unlocking his recent past, and ensuring that he has a future.
Viewed by many as the greatest science fiction writer on any planet, Philip K. Dick has written some of the most intriguing, original and thought-provoking fiction of our time. He has been described by The Wall Street Journal as the man who, "More than anyone else
really puts you inside people's minds."
Customer Reviews:
Good BOok. .......2005-12-11
It's a good collection. It is true that this is a reissue, however there are plenty of people who have never seen it before. (Including Me.)
The story Paycheck is completely different from the movie, in ALL manners. Also, it includes a ton of good stories, even if a few aren't the best. The forward also helps.
It's just a VERY good Sci-Fi book. Enough said. Beyond the Wub is priceless.
Not really a review, but..........2005-07-28
I just wanted to inform that this is the same "The Collected Stories of Philip K. Dick, Vol. 1", published before under the titles "Beyond Lies the Wub" or "The Short Happy Life of the Brown Oxford". I think it would be much easier to find this new edition, but this title is listed as "by Steven Owen Godersky" and not "by Philip K. Dick". If you already own the collection (or this particular volume), there is no need to buy it - the content is exactly the same. I am referring to the ISBN 0806526300 in this review, not the 0575070013 - so pay attention when you buy it.
Entertaining Collection.......2004-01-29
While this is a reissue of an earlier publication, this story collection is an excellent first book for those new to Philip K. Dick, as I was. In his forward to this edition, Dick writes that good science fiction must offer the reader a truly new idea and "it must be intellectually stimulating to the reader; it must invade his [or her] mind and wake it up to the possibility of something [s]he had not up to then thought of." (The brackets are mine.)
If we accept Dick's definition of good sci-fi, then this is truly good. The collection contains no stories that are "bad," and many that are outstanding. My favorites include "The Skull," the "Infinites," "The Variable Man," and "Beyond Lies the Wub."
If you don't yet own a story collection of Dick's, this one would be a good place to start.
WARNING! This is a reprint of an earlier work!.......2003-10-13
This collection was previously released as "The Short Happy Life Of The Brown Oxford" ISBN 0806511532. Don't be fooled by the new cover and title. It's being reissued under the title of the movie starring Ben Affleck and Uma Thurman. You probably already have the collection if you're a PKD fan. The 1 star rating is for the cheap attempt to get my money a second time.

Customer Reviews:
Best Intro for the Curious in Orisha Religion.......2003-01-24
First of all I really do like both of Joseph Murphy's books. This one and Santeria African Spirits in America. They speak truthfully, and are an excellent recourse of information for those who are curious in understanding the Lucumi Santeria Religion. Working the Spirits is a remarkable read, full of wisdom, and respect. `No he is not an Initiated priest of the Religion!" But Mr. Murphy writes with such respect, and one can tell he really researched the various Orisha religions, and grew to have a great respect and love for them. While I highly recommend Santeria African Spirits in America for those who want to have some knowledge of the Lucumi Religion, I also have to recommend Working the Spirits, as it goes into the Orisha sects of Candomble, Umbanda, Voodoo, Brujeria, and Espiritismo.

Creative ways to prepare asparagus - excellent.......1999-07-20
I have owned this book since the second annual Asparagus Festival when I volunteered at a booth in Asparagus Alley. I am constantly being asked for recipes I make from the book. As a parent, it is also nice to have recipes for asparagus that my son will request.
An excellent book full of unusual and useful recipes........1999-03-08
This book is really a value for its small size and small price. It was originally sold at the Stockton Asparagus Festival. The book contains many recipies from the Festival's Asparagus Food Alley as well as past winners in the ongoing recipe contast. Recipes range from soups, through main dishes, and on to breads and desserts. I highly recommend it for personal use or a small gift to the cook who has everything. If only it were 100 pages longer...I do love asparagus!!

For the collector, or just an admirerer, this is a terrific reference to own. The photos are detailed and it features a lot of past styles of blankets. I recommend, highly!

Book Description
When planning buildings in which people are to work and live, the efficient use of natural daylight and solar energy is increasingly important. The challenge is to compensate the different lighting requirements in winter and summer. Integrated daylight deflection systems distribute light into the interior of buildings, utilize and store solar energy to save artificial lighting, air-conditioning and heating costs. Extensively researched and impressively illustrated with a large number of computer simulations and photographs of built examples, this volume is more than an introduction to the basic principles, functions, designs and calculation methods of advanced light-guidance technology for architects, lighting designers, building and climate engineers. In particular it provides detailed documentation of the new Retro-Technology systems, explaining the role they can and do play in integrated façade and building design and planning processes.

Very uplifting and honest.......2006-01-30
I purchased both of Janet's books and enjoyed both of them so much I contacted her for a session. She is not only a gifted fortune teller but, it is obvious she is an old soul. She is honest and forthright and a pleasure to know. I will be going back for more "readings" and will purchase anything she writes.
Remembering Grandma.......2005-03-28
I loved Janets book so much because it brought memories of my grandmother, all her wisedom and knowledge of herbs and potions, we were poor, but grandma was the glue that held our family together, she also read cards, which is why I was drawn to Janets book. thanks for writing this book and I hope another book comes along soon.I highly recommend this book, read it you won't be sorry.
Just like Mom's stories.......2002-11-12
I read this book on the recommendation of a friend and I must say that I absolutely loved the book. My mother grew up in the hills of Appalachia and the book brought back memories and stories my mother used to tell. Ms. Rice's abilities and stories are fascinating. I now recommend the book to others.
If you haven't read this book you're missing out.......2002-09-27
Janet's book has two parts. First she remembers growing up in the hills. Several interesting stories and lessons. She has me smelling the air for rain and cucumbers. Her journey to a fortune teller I found very interesting. I am someone who would love to have her talents but I never knew the work she put into it. What determination!!
Second part has some very, very interesting stories about clients she has had over the years. They are stories that make you gasp, cry and laugh out loud.
Janet's book was very well written and easy to read. I was pleasantly surprised and entertained.
Takes Me Back To The Area Where I Grew Up.......2002-09-21
Janet lovingly describes her years of growing up in a small town environment. Her family roots gave the basis for her book. I could identify with a lot of the "superstitions" as I also heard them when I was growing up. The book flows very well and Janet did an excellent job in pulling it all together......Good Job!!
