Book Description

Jerome Charyn is known for his paeans to the workingman. Here is another work in that tradition, about a simple prop manager who finds himself unexpectedly—and literally—pushed into the spotlight, and a player in world history.

When Ivan Azerbaijan, known as Ivanushka, first set out for Moscow, he hoped for nothing more than to build sets for his mentor's production of King Lear. But when the lead falls suddenly ill, Ivanushka steps in and finds his performance the talk of Moscow. He falls under the scrutiny of Joseph Stalin, who allows starlet Valentina Michaelson to join the cast as Cordelia. Ivanushka is thrust headlong into the world of intrigue, terror, and distrust that was Stalin's Soviet Union.

Charyn depicts both the romance between Valentina and Ivan and the chaos of life under Stalin's watchful eyes with similar style, making the fear and confusion palpable in this audacious winter's tale. The Green Lantern is an exploration of Shakespeare, the Soviet Union, and what it is to "perform," by one of the great American writers.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best historical novels I've read.......2005-05-08

I can't disagree more with the Washington Post review. I started reading it because I had nothing else better to do and then suddenly I was transported into Stalinist era of the 1930s. I feel I need to find out what I can about this author who has achieved something close to witchcraft by re-creating the psychological (un)reality of that era. I almost laughed when I read the reviewer's complaints about how the details don't add to the intrigue/suspense. There is NO suspense; only the utter illogic of possible imminent violent end to one's life for no reason which IS the definition of the Stalinist era. How this guy called Jerome Charyn about whom I know nothing accomplish this in a rather slim book much better than all the volumes of Solzhenitsyn who was actually there, I have no idea.

Book Description

THE SPIRIT OF A LADY

Four fabulous guys must completely transform a high school girl if they want to keep living rent-free in her aunt’s luxurious mansion. But Sunako Nakahara, the most fashion-hopeless girl in Japan, would rather live like a hermit and watch her favorite horror movies than undergo a makeover.

When the guys stumble upon the mansion’s secret subbasement, they discover the ghost of a prim and proper lady who (thankfully) begins to possess Sunako’s soul. It seems their problem is solved. Too bad that Sunako’s now-suitable personality includes a desire to lock the boys up in the mansion’s dungeon!

5 out of 5 stars another manga delight.......2005-09-28

While reading Volume 1 of this series, I immediately was overcome by a desire to... go out and buy the remaining volumes. But I didn't... I just bought volume 2 and, right after I finished with vol. 1, I started on vol. 2. All I can say is this: not as good as the first one, but definitely beyond the quality level of some other mangas. The story continues with Sunako still a recluse (and still having those explosive nosebleeds) and Kyohei and pals still the kings of the school. The beginning events are kind of funny; from the "King and Queen of the School" schtick to the haunted house occupied by Sunako, it's good for a few laughs. After that, however, the plot thickens. After the guys discover a basement below the mansion's basement, they begin to explore it.. and find the ghost of a girl that was murdered in the house in 1900. Only one problem: she's taken over the body of Sunako. After Sunako/ghost-person and Kyohei kiss, the ghost leaves her body and they all go back to the mansion.. above ground. After a few other halfway decent scenes, the novel ends with Kyohei and Sunako standing outside on the balcony talking. (Does Kyohei have feelings for Sunako or vice versa? I think so.) Overall: a definite must-read for all manga fans and a 900/100.

5 out of 5 stars Comedy changed a little, but still a definate 5-star manga........2005-01-26

One of my new prized manga titles is The Wallflower. I read volume 1 and was soon scrounging around for volume 2. While volume 1 did seem better story-wise, this volume was still quite humorous. Even though I thought volume 1 to be better, this is still a 5-star book. I think the author made sure the comedy didn't get too repetitive, which may be why the comedy changed a little between volumes (the main character running in fear is only funny so many times). If you liked the first volume, get the second. It may not be at the exact same comedy level as the first volume, but it's definately still a great book.

4 out of 5 stars A little less humor, a little more romance........2005-01-08

After reading the first volume of "The Wallflower", I had high hopes for the second installment of the series. Though I can't say I didn't like the book, it definitely pales in comparison to the debut volume.

Sunako falls slightly out of character at minor points in the story, Kyohei's actions seem a little random and overall the humor is a little less intense as from the first volume. Also, there is a lot less material this time. The actual manga part of the book is a lot shorter than last time's; however, instead of just a pointless laugh-out-loud book, it brings to the table a bit of suspense this time around. There also appears to be a lot more suggestiveness and introduction to possible romances in this volume.

I would recommend this manga series as a whole rather than this particular volume alone, and if you really just want to try this series out and not commit to reading the entire thing, I'd suggest going for volume 1 instead.

    Book Description

One of the greatest storytellers of our time, Roger Zelazny was a writer who created entire civilizations from whole cloth as masterfully as he explored mankind's place in the cosmos. From the depths of space to the depths of the human heart, from our darkest nightmares to our most fanciful dreams, Zelazny wove colorful tapestries that presented the wonders of the universe to us all.

The Last Defender of Camelot is a new collection of breathtaking stories that showcase these abilities, edited and with an introduction by award-winning author Robert Silverberg. Included are such tales as: "For a Breath I Tarry," "Halfjack," and the Hugo Award-winning "24 Views of Mt. Fuji, by Hokusai," "Permafrost," and "Home is the Hangman."

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Last Defender of Camelot.......2005-09-06

"The Last Defender" is an excellent collection of some of the master's best stories, including "24 Views of Mount Fuji," and one previously uncollected story. Zelazny did more than just write science fiction; he captured the essence of human emotion, even when writiing about computerized intelligences in the distant future (see, for example, "For A Breath I Tarry." )

4 out of 5 stars A good new selection with an old title.......2003-11-18

This new collection of Zelazny stories, selected by Robert Silverberg, is a good one. It contains 3 of his stronger stories from earlier collections made by Zelazny himself: "For A Breath I Tarry," "The Last Defender of Camelot," and "24 Views of Mt. Fuji."

The book also contains several other worthy stories to create a collection that spans Zelazny's career. I suspect length issues caused the selection to be limited to only 11 stories. Still, as a long-time reader of Zelazny's work since the '60s, I think he would have been better represented if I Books could have made the collection bigger. New readers of Zelazny can't easily get a feeling for the magnitude of his accomplishments with such a small selection.

The absence of "He Who Shapes" and "Damnation Alley," for instance, is to be regretted. Still, the collection is good overall. New readers who wish to read more of Zelazny's work will simply need to scour 2nd hand bookstores.

Another, somewhat irksome problem is that the collection name, _The Last Defender of Camelot_, matches that of a collection that Zelazny published himself back in 1980. That collection was probably one of his 2 or 3 best, and it was also quite large. Giving this collection the same name seems an ill-considered choice, and it will result in some confusion that should have been avoided. Most regrettable, but oh, well. At least these stories are available again, and that is a plus.

4 out of 5 stars Good stuff.... with 1 total classic!.......2002-08-20

This is worth it all 4 "For a Breath I Tarry," which is 1 of my all-time faves -- words fail me; it's hilarious, heart-wrenching; it'll change your world in 25 pages. "He Who Shapes" (aka "The Dream Master") is also outstanding. Also solid: "The Last Defender of Camelot," & a romantic heart-wringer called "The Engine at Heartspring's Center." There R many others which R at LEAST worth reading. Zelazny was a poet; I miss him. If U like him, U might also try early George R.R. Martin, early Samuel R. Delany, & some of Robert Silverberg's mellower work (like DOWNWARD TO THE EARTH, DYING INSIDE, THE BOOK OF SKULLS).

2 out of 5 stars A hacked version of the classic anthology.......2002-06-25

As a huge fan of the author and the original release of this brilliant short story collection, I am extremely disappointed in the new release. HUNT DOWN THE ORIGINAL. The new version omits all of Zelazny's forewords and, more damning, it actually omits some of the better stories found in the original collection. Silverburg mentions "Horsemen!" in the introduction, then the story is strangely absent. This is a travesty.

5 out of 5 stars An exquisite classic.......2002-03-29

I discovered Roger Zelazny's writings long ago when I was young and impressionable, for which I am eternally grateful. This collection of his short stories is my personal favorite because the stories contained within are each unique and distinct, no two alike. Think of a banquet with many courses, each one delicious and completely different and you will know what I mean.

From "Passion Play" to the "Stainless Steel Leech", through "Comes Now the Power" and "Damnation Alley", Zelazny demonstrates his uncanny insight into the soul of man, machine, and beast. And in the title piece, "Last Defender of Camelot", he takes the over-told Arthurian legend and twists it into something fresh and original. Yum!

But my favorite story is "For a Breath I Tarry", a post-apocalyptic vision of hope and humanity springing from a most unlikely and accidental hero.

If science fiction, GOOD science fiction, is something you value, this book will please you for many years because just when you think you know everything these stories have to offer, some other facet or nuance will creep up behind you and remind you how strange and wonderful the universe really is.

Great tips on how to layer, and how to prepare shooters. It's full of funny quotes, it's cleverly animated, and an all-in-all useful bar guide.

This book was very well written and has beautiful pictures. However, if you want to make your own porcelain dolls from scratch - it's not for you. I was most interested in learning about making molds and wigs and this book pretty much said, "You can buy a wide variety of these at your local doll supply shop." I personally don't want to make dolls from a pre-existing mold so there's little I can do with that information. However, many of the techniques are very good and insightful and I will definitely look back on this book once I figure out how to get my molds created. The author definitely know what she's talking about, I just wish she had shared a little more of the little known facts with the rest of us.

                                Book Description

This book reconstructs the theories of matter and space of the mutakallimun of the tenth and eleventh centuries A.D. It uses texts which have only recently become available. The book presents material which challenges our previous understanding of kalam atomism. In particular, it analyzes the concept of atoms as a `space-occupying object' without dimension yet having magnitude. It examines the manner of the atom's occupation of space, and discusses arguments for and against unoccupied spaces or the void. A detailed examination of the paradoxical nature of such an atom follows. The argument is made that a `discrete' rather than a `continuous' conception of space, matter, time, motion and indeed geometry underlies kalam physical theory. In this respect, the kalam atom is similar to the Epicurean minimal part.

"Jessica, I will come back to say goodbye," Zeke Ezell told his wife, stretching out his hand to her as doctors wheeled him into the operating room.

Zeke lost his battle for life. But the day after his death, a beautiful white malamute appeared among the mourners in Jessica's backyard. Joyfully leaping up to lick the faces of Zeke's wife and children, the mysterious dog seemed to recognize everyone, although no one had ever seen her before.

But Jessica sensed that this "reunion" was no accident. This white dog strongly resembled Zeke's beloved malamute, who had passed on years earlier. Could Zeke actually have sent Jessica a messenger of love from the world of spirit?

Jessica Ezell's touching true story will inspire hope as well as tears. Perhaps love can continue in ways we never dared imagine.
