5 out of 5 stars A wonderful work by a wonderful storyteller.......2002-12-11

Dr. Kilgo's works are not widely known (as in "popular"), though he was appropriately recognized with the Townsend Prize for Fiction for "Daughter of My People", but his ability to turn a tale is unparalleled. The Hand-Carved Creche and Other Christmas Stories is not as broad in scope as "Daughter of My People", nor is it meant to be. Superficially it is an "easy read", but this is analogous to admiring a gift for its wrapping paper. (By contrast "Daughter of My People" is best savored over a period of days--or even weeks--rather than in a one-shot read.)

Even though the language and structure Kilgo uses in The Hand-Carved Creche are more flowing and perhaps not so finely honed as in his other works, it is Kilgo at his most relaxed best. There is more of Jim Kilgo in this book than in any to date, for what we see are glimpses -- no, more than that, they are long-lasting impressions of the mind and spirit -- into the boyhood of the man to come. But Kilgo's ability to place his reader fully in the context of these Christmas memories also allows the reader to connect to his or her own memories of Christmases past. And we get to ask and reflect on that basic question: what is Christmas really all about?

Not only will you not be sorry you read this book, but you will find yourself drawn to read it again and again as Christmas approaches each year.

Granted, my review of this work is likely somewhat biased by my personal relationship with Jim Kilgo. But I am also no fool: I recognize excellence when I see it.

***The death of Jim Kilgo on Sunday, December 8, 2002, due to pneumonia-related complications means that the world has lost a preeminent novelist and storyteller. He wrote for the love of the language and about his love of family, the outdoors, and friends. He was at the same time a self-confident, determined man and an humble, gentle spirit, never seeking the limelight or the glory. He will be missed.

5 out of 5 stars What a nice way to spend Christmas.......1999-12-10

I discovered Kilgo through his stunning novel, Daughter of My People. This is a little book, but it is rich--more insight and meaning and substance here that there is in most 300 page books. Kilgo can really turn a phrase. And while his telling of his childhood Christmas stories set in South Carolina is perfect, the only problem if that I was left wanting more.

2 out of 5 stars I like Pierson but not this book.......2007-08-14

I was looking forward to reading this book from Pierson, but I was very dissapointed. (Although I might have high expectations after reading the Kingpriest Trilogy) One reason I didn't enjoy this book is due to the way Dezra treated Caramon. It kind of ruined the story for me.

Just don't base your opinion of Chris Pierson based solely on this book.

1 out of 5 stars I'd give it 0 stars if I could.......2004-11-26

I hated this book! Dezra totally disrespects her father in the beginning of the book and that made me dislike her right away. Caramon Majere is one of the original companions, a Hero of the Lance, Raistin's twin brother and one of my of all time favorite characters. Dezra's attitude toward him made me want to scream. I only bought Dezra's Quest because it featured Tikia and Caramon's daughter, after getting to know her it lost it's appeal. I read less than half the book before I threw it across the room in frustration. I finished it eventually, but only because I spent my hard earned money to buy it, and found I should have left it on the floor. I gave it to the Salvation Army the next day.

I don't mean to be harsh, but I really detested this book.

5 out of 5 stars What a great read for Dragonlance fans.......2004-09-25

I just finished this book. It was fantastic. I think this new Dragonlance Author is amazing. I've also read his book, Spirit of the Wind, which I liked a lot. So what made this book so good?

1) I really cared about the characters.
2) I didn't know who would survive at the end of this story. Very rarely do I get hooked on a book like this (see R.R. Martin, I'm serious about this comparison).
3) Storyline was very well done. I hated the bad guys and loved the good guys. I also liked the duality of the plot, which can be rare in the dragonlance world.
4) I think the Author has done his homework. Because I've read a majority of the dragonlance books. I can usually see right away if an Author understand the world of Krynn. I really wish Wizards of the Coast would hire someone who has read every book to proofread some of the other DL books before publishing because they can sometimes be BRUTAL. (Tanis the Shadow Years and The Inheritance are two books about Tanis's past..they are COMPLETELY different stories which just tears apart the legitamacy of the stories). But in this book, everything is very consistant with other books in the DL realm.

My one point of negativity towards this book is this. I didn't like the language. I have dreams of one day sharing these stories with my children, but this one, unfortunately, I'll have to keep back longer than the others. I mean, do they really need to say "oh, s***" in Krynn? That doesn't really match the style of the other Dragonlance books.

Other than that. 5/5...Very well done and well written.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting book from an important new DL author.......2002-01-16

Once I picked up this book I was not willing to stop reading it until i had finished it. You can get a plot summary elsewhere on this site, so I won't tell much about that. Peirson focuses on a race--the Centaurs--that haven't really been focused on in DL literature. And he does it well. The conflict seen between the characters of the novel was also really well expressed. Peirson does a good job in this novel of show his world, instead of telling us about it. I recommend this book to any DL reader who wants an excellent diversion from the main Fifth Age plot line.

4 out of 5 stars great but not spectacular...........2001-11-11

a good book; chris pierson does a good job playing out his characters. dezra is played well, although she seems a bit too much like kitaria. actually a lot like her. a sell-sword, she had the smirk, and the attitude.

again, i was impressed at how well dezra's character was played out. she acted just like a hot teenage girl w/ an attitude would. caramon played his role well, being the protector. hmmm can't say that his character was played well enough. there was something wrong with it.

anyway, i gave it 4 stars because it kept me going. i didn't just read it, i kind've wanted to find out what happened. if the book was actually exciting, however, i would've given it 5.

This is quite possibly what we are coming to in reality where the surface is hostile and mankind is forced to retreat to enclosed bubbles of safety. In this story, one such bubble is below the surface of the ocean trying to survive and remain sain for a many centuries. This is a very interesting and ultimately hopefull account of the strength of the human spirit.

            Book Description

            Why the World Loves/Hates America

Long before there was an America, Europeans sensed that a land of freedom lay to the west, by definition different from the cloistered Old World. A fantasy grew into a society, then a nation, and finally a superpower; yet the belief always lingered that liberty and America were one and the same. Often they were. But unattainable aspirations can be as damaging as they are uplifting. From the Puritans to Thomas Paine, from Woodrow Wilson to George W. Bush, Americans have believed we have nothing less than a mission to redeem the world. Pursuing that belief, we have stumbled into a paradox: the desire to see liberty spread around the globe leads to forced efforts that are inconsistent with a true definition of liberty.
With wit, brilliance, and deep affection, the inimitable Ted Widmer has written a history of America in the world unlike any other. Ranging from the late seventeenth century to the present, Widmer traces America’s wondrous history, the arc that runs from the Declaration of Independence to the Gettysburg Address to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. He also looks unblinkingly at our less glorious history, from the 1739 Stono Rebellion, which saw slaves massacred under a banner declaring “liberty,” to the occupation of Iraq and America’s dismal standing in world opinion. Ark of the Liberties is that luminous rarity, a celebratory critique written in the conviction that if Americans want an occasionally ungrateful world to respect us more, then it will certainly help to know ourselves a little better.

                    Book Description

Many scholars and citizens alike have counted on civic groups to create broad ties that bind society. Some hope that faith-based civic groups will spread their reach as government retreats. Yet few studies ask how, if at all, civic groups reach out to their wider community. Can religious groups--long central in civic America--create broad, empowering social ties in an unequal, diverse society?

Over three years, Paul Lichterman studied nine liberal and conservative Protestant-based volunteering and advocacy projects in a mid-sized American city. He listened as these groups tried to create bridges with other community groups, social service agencies, and low-income people, just as the 1996 welfare reforms were taking effect. Counter to long-standing arguments, Lichterman discovered that powerful customs of interaction inside the groups often stunted external ties and even shaped religion's impact on the groups. Comparing groups, he found that successful bridges outward depend on group customs which invite reflective, critical discussion about a group's place amid surrounding groups and institutions.

Combining insights from Alexis de Tocqueville, John Dewey, and Jane Addams with contemporary sociology, Elusive Togetherness addresses enduring questions about civic and religious life that elude the popular "social capital" concept. To create broad civic relationships, groups need more than the right religious values, political beliefs, or resources. They must learn new ways of being groups.

3 out of 5 stars Good book for a teen!.......2005-10-19

Doesn't list yarn sizes but has good basic instructions with excellent pics. Written towards the teen set. A few great patterns, if you aren't plus size. Patterns: beret, cloche and russian hats; mittens, 4 scarves, 5 bags, a purse on a belt, 2 more belts, 3 chokers and a wrist cuff, weird fingerless gloves that aren't really fingerless gloves, leg warmers, a cute mini skirt, a shawl, a poncho, a halter and a bikini. This book is worth it for the beaded evening bag, mini skirt and bikini! :)

3 out of 5 stars ok projects and good explainations, but lacking............2005-08-05

any major creative/trendy items..... I thought this would have more cool accesories for the fashion conscious crocheter.... a couple were cute, but weren't anything special and most were ones I didn't need a pattern to complete. Overall this book is average.... like most crochet books. Still dreaming of crochet books that are more contemporary.

                                Book Description

This is the autobiography of Ann Walker a worldwide renowned Spiritualist Medium, and, even though she describes herself as an 'ordinary housewife and mother', she has been described by the Daily Mirror as the 'next Doris Stokes'.

In this book, Ann takes us through the stages of her troubled and traumatic life. After thirty-seven years she is introduced to her spiritual guide called White Arrow who opens up a whole new world for her. Ann Walker's remarkable true story has a message for each and every one of us and at the same time endorsing the fact that we all have our very own White Arrow.

She still continues to have faith in the spirit world and over the years Ann and White Arrow have helped thousands of people find faith on their pathway.

On her many journeys with White Arrow, she has written three further books, Little One - Message From Planet Heaven, The Stone Of The Plough, and The Messenger The Messiah.
