It was all new - most of it singularly dramatic and even appalling to the woman who sat with the pearl-gray veil drawn closely about her face. For eighteen hours she had been a keenly attentive, wide-eyed, and partly frightened bit of humanity in this onrush of "the horde." She had heard a voice behind her speak of it as "the horde" - a deep, thick, gruff voice which she knew without looking had filtered its way through a beard. She agreed with the voice. It was the Horde - that horde which has always beaten the trails ahead for civilization and made of its own flesh and blood the foundation of nations. For months it had been pouring steadily into the mountains - always in and never out, a laughing, shouting, singing, blaspheming Horde, every ounce of it toughened sinew and red brawn, except the Straying Angels. One of these sat opposite her, a dark-eyed girl with over-red lips and hollowed cheeks, and she heard the bearded man say something to his companions about "dizzy dolls" and "the little angel in the other seat." This same voice, gruffened in its beard, had told her that ten thousand of the Horde had gone up ahead of them. Then it whispered something that made her hands suddenly tighten and a hot flush sweep through her. She lifted her veil and rose slowly from her seat, as if to rearrange her dress. Casually she looked straight into the faces of the bearded man and his companion in the seat behind.

Excellent book.......2006-08-14

The Warlock's Last Ride was a fitting finale to the series. I am very disappointed that there will be no more...Christopher Stasheff was as fabulous with his last book in the series as every other book.

After reading the other reviews I bought the book and put it on the shelf without reading it because I expected the book to be sad and depressing.

When I finally read the book I found that it was refreshing and reminded me of his first books such as The Warlock in Spite of Himself rather than his later books which were more and more predicable. I don't want to spoil the story so all I will say is that while there are parts that made me sad the way they were written also made me very happy at the same time. I found the book very enjoyable - the plot was not predicable - there was a lot of variety, and the book had a pleasant and satisfying ending. If you have read the series then you will want to read this book.

A sad goodbye.......2004-08-21

Since I graduated from reading Nancy Drew mysteries in grade four I've been reading the Warlock books. I started with the first book and never looked back. Rod, Gwen, their children, as well as Fess have been freinds and now I can't expect to hear (well, read) of their new adventures.
So its a fond and sad farewell for me.
Mr. Stasheff brings together all the threads of his many tales over the years with skill. After so long you'd expect there to be more inconsistencies in this last book from the first. Unlike many other authors, he managed to avoid the mistakes that readers always catch. Especially after such a long lived series.
A wonderful final adventure as Rod and Fess go off in to the sunset and find Gwen again.

Great Closure.......2004-06-07

It was a very long time ago when I first started reading this series with "The Warlock in Spite of Himself", "Escape Velocity", and "King Kobold", and if you haven't some if not most of the early stories in the series you definitely don't want to start with this one. If you have been fortunate to have already discovered the Gallowglass family, you really do not want to miss this book.

I can't say that the plot itself is really great or gripping - I mean that from the standpoint of the villains that the Gallowglass family are faced with in the story. SPITE and VETO - the agents from the future are back as the antagonists, and they've got back the lead agents from the earliest books - the Mocker and Durer. However the big "fights" seem to be a side note to the story. What really drives this book is the story of Rod, Gwen and his children. This book is basically about saying farewell to a really beloved friend as we lose some of the main characters who have been in the story from the beginning.

As other reviewers have noted there have been a ton of books in this series, but all good things must end. Rod and Gwen have four capable and now grown up children and it was time to pass the mantle.

It's kind of a bittersweet story, and long time fans will be saddened as you read this book, but at the same time you'll feel a sense of completion.

I kind of fell away from the series about 4 or 5 novels into the Magnus (Gar Pike) off-shoot series as they felt very repetitive, but this one was definitely worth coming back for.

Other reviewers have commented favorably on the book, and I must agree. If for nothing else other than nostalgia, anyone who has read Mr. Stasheff's previous novels would have to read this one.

"The Warlock's Last Ride" is a bittersweet one, as we see beloved characters die and others operate through their grief. Writing is, as someone else pointed out, fresh, and seeing a number of plot strings introduced at various parts of the series brings a strong sense of closure. Moreover, since this is a Stasheff novel, the closure is logically presented, and consistent within the science of the series.

Kudos to Mr. Stasheff, and should you read this review, I would like to say that from book 1 to this one, it has been a very long, but very companionable, ride.

I looked for a long time for "When Harlie Was Two" (a title promised in the book "When Harlie Was One"). Never found it.

There was a good reason! That book was never written.

I finally found it at Worldcon 63 (Noreascon 4) in the huckster's room where I ran across the author himself at a booth selling "When Harlie Was One (Release 2.0)".

It may be out of print, but it is not unavailable. Try his home page.

Simply one of the best pieces of speculative fiction I've ever read. It has flaws, but it still takes the breath away, the sheer audacity of its vision. Warning, this book will make you think and could change the way you see yourself and others...

Once read, never forgotten. It's a crime it's out of print, track down a copy and see for yourself.

I read the book maybe 25 years ago, and it is one of the few books that have always stuck in my memory. The main reason I am writing this review is that I hope the publisher will consider a reprint! As I found - reading the other reviews - that there are more people like me for whom this book was an unforgettable experience. (And of course I would like to find out if it has retained its magic over the years.)

A superb and thoughful book - the "Version 2", which is hard to find is very much better than the "original" which feels a little dated these days.

BTW The name HARLIE is an acronym which changes in the two versions of the book. In version 1 the acronym is for Human Analog Robot Life Input Equivalents. The last reviewer is dead wrong and actually gives away one of the key plot points and "jokes" of the book, so SPOILERS BELOW! You have been warned!

Not just mildly awful!.......2007-02-07

After reading two other reviews elsewhere, I waited for its arrival with keen anticipation only to find it truly awful! Why? Well, one hardly knows where to start - but I'll try! The book's author, apparently, has a PhD in religious experience but the utterly poor standard of scholarship demonstrated within beggars belief: it's repetitious, banal and full of `waffle'. She devotes a whole 4 pages to debunking Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, primarily by invoking the work of a retired university lecturer in engineering called Ronald Pearson. An example of the author's method of argument can be found at the end of Chapter 4 where she concludes that `the biggest argument that I can offer you in favour of there being an afterlife is that no scientist has yet proved that the afterlife does not exist'. Well, I can't recall any scientist proving that creatures called clangers don't live on a far away planet living happily on blue-string soup fed to them by a soup dragon but it doesn't mean that they do! The whole thing has the feel of an offering from a well-intentioned 16 year old trying to get good marks for her GCSE coursework! How on Earth this ever got to be published is also something of a mystery: the book certainly appears not to have been edited - whole sections should have been excised not to mention the fact that it's also full of misspellings and gaps where words should have been in order for it to make, at least, some sort of sense. To sum up - it's garbage and does neither its author's cause nor the people whose work she claims to 'champion' any favours at all.

Good reference if you are looking to identify dolls, but very few of the dogs, mice, horses, and wildlife the company produced are listed, which included, unfortunately, none of the ones I was looking for. The pictures are very clear and the price guide is easy to follow, however.

Josef Originals were figurines from my childhood and are a wonderful collectable to pass down through generations. This well illustrated book will delight any Josef collector. It begins with a short written history and jumps into many pages of clear pictures. Each page is a delight to view. This guide has a price listing in the back. Collect all three "Josef" books by the Authors Jim & K Whitaker. These books are indeed collectibles in themselves.

Kid Style Nature Crafts.......2000-04-13

Here is another great book by this author that makes learning nature and science fun. The seasonal organization of the book is helpful in that materials are available for the projects during the time the book suggests making them. Like "Nature Crafts for Kids",(by the same author) this book contains wonderful pictures of the projects and step by step instructions. Some of the projects are more challanging than others and adult supervision is a good idea. This is a wonderful excuse to have time together with a special child, enjoy sharing ideas and make something that can be fun and rewarding.

Take the time to share the wonderful things in nature and the things that can be made from natural things by using this book with special children around you.

Fascinating premise, fascinating book............2002-06-02

This book has alot of stuff in it......autobiographical, spiritual, karma, past lives, and other numerous insights. The first two chapters are a little too lengthy, and quite frankly as the book itself admits, you can skip Chapter 1 & 2, and just start with Chapter 3, "Episodes From Past Lives". From then on the book is filled with many stories of his past incarnations, and historical events all garnered from the Akashic Records. Absorbing reading full of adventure and spiritual knowledge. Worth reading, and I don't know of any other book quite like it!
