Book Description

1915. Dostoevsky, Russian novelist, is considered one of the most outstanding and influential writers of modern literature. In The Insulted and Injured he first explores one of his major themes, the beneficial effects of suffering. The novel begins: Last year, on the evening of March 22, I had a very strange adventure. All that day I had been walking about the town trying to find a lodging. My old one was very damp, and I had begun to have an ominous cough. Ever since the autumn I had been meaning to move, but I had hung on till the spring. I had not been able to find anything decent all day. In the first place I wanted a separate tenement, not a room in other people's lodgings; secondly, though I could do with one room, it must be a large one, and, of course, it had at the same time to be as cheap as possible. I have observed that in a confined space even thought is cramped. When I was brooding over a future novel I liked to walk up and down the room. By the way, I always like better brooding over my works and dreaming how they should be written than actually writing them. And this really is not from laziness. Why is it? 3 out of 5 stars Shocking editing for a reasonable text.......2005-11-27

Disregarding the literary merits of Dostoevsky's novel, the editing of this book is dreadful, to say the least. From the bizarre blurb ("Vanya has a crush on Natasha"..."probably literally an homage to Dickens"..."Anyway, Vanya saves from an abusive household") the editors demonstrate a disconnected grasp of grammatical and linguistic structure, which disintegrates further throughout the text.
A typical example of this blatant lack of proofreading reads as follows:
"How is Natalya Nikolaevna? Is she at home I inquired of the anxious lady.
(The quotation never reaches a conclusion). Similarly, there are several instances of typographical punctuation errors ("I less than any,.") as well as a general lack of grammatical syntax.
For a so-called classic, the editors of this book have either lazily failed to do the text justice by omitting neccessary linguistic features, or the editing has in fact been completed by a panel of inebriated armadillos.

2 out of 5 stars Fyodor's Off Day.......2004-07-16

"The Insulted and Injured" is, to say the least, not one of Dostoyevsky's better efforts. The struggling writer, Vanya, tells of the tangled story of two squabbling families and how Alyosha's love for Natasha fuels that strife further. Alyosha cannot decide between Natasha and the wealthy Katya, whilst his father Prince Valkovsky tries manoeuvre him towards the wealthy Katya. There's also a sub-plot involving the waif Nellie and Vanya.

It's all pretty familiar stuff, and as another reviewer commented, has a curiously Dickensian feel about it: Nellie and Little Nell - too close to be pure coincidence? The downside of all this is that the novel is full of two-dimensional characters: Prince Valkovsky is a pantomime villain, Alyosha a completely feckless youth, Katya and Natasha worthy but wronged women. Therefore the characters are never really convincing. The plot is too feeble to support of novel of this length - resolutions are interminably long and the final "surprise" is well-signalled throughout.

A curious work to say the least. Interesting perhaps because of that, but not much else.

5 out of 5 stars A moving tale of suffering and forgiveness.......2000-05-20

It's really a shame that The Insulted and Injured is as hard to find as it is; though it's not on as grand a scale as most of Dostoevsky's better known novels, it may be as touching as anything he wrote. Narrated by a young author, Vanya, who has just released his first novel (which bears an obvious resemblance to Dostoevsky's own first novel, Poor Folk, making me wonder how much of the story might be autobiographical), it consists of two gradually converging subplots. One deals with Vanya's close friend and former love object, Natasha, who has left her family to live with her new lover, Alyosha. Alyosha is the saintly but dimwitted son of Prince Valkovsky, who hopes to gain financially by marrying Alyosha off to an heiress, Katya. Valkovsky's cruel machinations to break up Alyosha and Natasha make him one of the most memorable "predatory types" (a la Stavrogin in The Possessed) that Dostoevsky created. The other branch of the plot deals with the approximately 13-year old orphan Nellie, whom Vanya saves from an abusive household by taking her into his apartment, and whose deceased mother's story in some ways parallels that of Natasha. It's unusual to see a well-developed character as young as Nellie in a Dostoevsky novel, but Nellie may be one of his most moving creations, and she in particular shows the influence of Dickens (whom Dostoevsky is known to have read during the Siberian exile near the end of which this novel was conceived).

The Insulted and Injured could justly be criticized for melodrama, as the characters' behavior is a bit too extreme to be believed. There's not even a hint of jealousy anywhere in the love quadrilateral between Vanya, Natasha, Alyosha, and Katya, as none of them want anything other than the happiness of their beloved--whether that happiness is with someone else is utterly (and unrealistically) immaterial to them. Also, at the other end of the spectrum, Prince Valkovsky is rather implausibly evil, especially toward his own son, who though not exactly brilliant has done nothing to justify Valkovsky's cruelty. However, these extreme charcters make the novel very emotionally involving and didn't realy bother me while I was reading it, though of course your mileage may vary.

One of the most important themes throughout Dostoevsky's work is the expiative value of suffering, and The Insulted and Injured, with its tragically moving plot and characters, develops that theme splendidly. At this writing, unfortunately, Amazon lists it as unavailable; hopefully that will change soon. (Also, although at present the out-of-print search service isn't offered for this translation, it is available for a translation under the title "The Insulted and Humiliated," so you might try searching under that title.)

4 out of 5 stars I love this comic so much but there are some problems.......2005-02-22

This is, by far, my favorite ongoing, branded superhero comic on the shelves right now. Out, Hardcore, and Widow are all so human and so kick-butt at the same time that I just can't put them down once I pick them up, no matter how many times I've read them. Not to mention *drool* Born Again. I bought this one, finally, to complete the collection, and while there are some parts that are awesome, there are some parts that don't resonate and one part that is just plain wrong.

First of all, the first Daredevil comic I ever read is in this collection, the one that got me into the character in the first place and made me buy all the other ones and the Millers etc, and that is the issue I like to call Superhero Intervention. In it, Matt gets called into the park where his friends Peter Parker, Luke Cage, Dr. Strange, and Mr. Fantastic are all there, out of costume, telling him to stop being a crazy person. It's brilliant. Alex Maleev's rendering of Peter in particular is priceless.

Some stuff that doesn't work: Jessica Jones. Okay, I love that character, but does Bendis really have to keep inserting her into his other comics? And she just doesn't look right here. Also, as the story plods on it starts to feel old. There are also two full pages of Ben Uhrich just sitting there, talking. It's the same frame, over and over again, for two whole pages. Blah! I mean, I love Ben, but I don't need to stare at his yabbering maw this long.

And then there is the part that is WRONG. Please correct me if you know better, because I am relatively new to this comic, but wasn't Matt relatively old when his father was killed? Because I checked, and when Miller wrote it in Visionaries, he was at least a teenager. He was a kid when he lost his sight, but he was a grown-up teenager when his dad died. After all, that's why he never has foster parents. But here, in a giant splash page, Maleev draws him like he's ten years old. Come on! I've only been reading this comic a year and I know better!

This book is still great for fans, but if you want a good taste, start with Out, or Hardcore, or Widow.

                    5 out of 5 stars Continuing Excellence.......2004-09-09

Continuing a year after volume 6's events in which Matt Murdock reaches the breaking point and declares himself kingpin of Hell's Kitchen, this volume explores the aftermath of Matt's actions and how it changes everything and everyone around him.

Bendis continues to keep throwing out amazing stories that really explore who Matt Murdock really is. His characterization is top-notch and the dialogue is as good as ever here. Bendis' work on "Daredevil" is really his best in comics right now (with "Ultimate Spider-Man" and "Powers" following closely behind).

Alex Maleev also continues his signature DD style here which lacks a bit during action scenes but is unbeatable for grounded, dark stories with an emphasis on characters. Hollingsworth's colors compliment the art nicely with very dark, gritty scenes that match the mature tone of the stories.

Simply put: if you have read and liked the previous volumes in the Bendis/Maleev run, this is more of the same and a must read of what is shaping up to be one of the definitive runs in Daredevil's history.

5 out of 5 stars The return of the king.......2004-08-04

This five part storyarc marks the return of writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Alex Maleev. Taking place one year after the events of Hardcore, Matt Murdock/Daredevil has declared himself the new Kingpin of Hell's Kitchen, and with his identity public he doesn't even bother wearing the costume anymore. He has since married Milla Donovan, and even his fellow super heroes (Luke Cage and Spider-Man among them) don't even understand what he is doing. Soon though, the Japanese mob makes a hit on Matt, coming up with what is one of the hugest brawls to grace the pages of Daredevil in years. Bendis' knack for dialogue is in full effect here, and his work on DD has always been excellent, and it continues here. Maleev's art is excellent as well, and he truly is one of the top rising stars in comics today. All in all, The King of Hell's Kitchen is up there with other Bendis/Maleev masterpieces like Out and Hardcore, and is definitely worth picking up.

                      Book Description

Published in 1890, Caesar's Column is an account of a trip to New York City in 1988 by a visitor from the Swiss colony of Uganda. The great metropolis dazzles with its futuristic technology, but its ostentatious wealth and luxury mask the brutal repression of the laboring classes by their rich bosses. The workers, aided by international terrorists, stage a violent revolt and the narrator flees the devastated city by airship to found an agrarian utopia in Africa.

Fueled by outrage at social conditions, Caesar's Column was the first major dystopian novel in the English language. Its author, Ignatius Donnelly, was the most famous--and controversial--American populist politician of the day, and his book became a huge bestseller and was often compared to such utopian works as Edward Bellamy's Looking Backward (1888) and William Morris's News from Nowhere (1890). This Wesleyan edition includes an insightful introduction and notes by Nicholas Ruddick.

Statement from the foreword: I seek to preach into the ears of the able and rich and powerful the great truth that neglect of the sufferings of their fellows, indifference to the great bond of brotherhood which lies at the base of Christianity, and blind, brutal and degrading worship of mere wealth, must—given time and pressure enough—eventuate in the overthrow of society and the destruction of civilization.

On the heals of "Looking Backward","Erewhon" and the success of Jules Verne, Donnelly's book is another of the first SciFi or Dystopias that were published during the late 1800s. Donnelly's narrator takes us through the revolution that occurs in the late 20th century after the world has been taken over by an Oligarchy. In many ways it fore-shadows many of the worlds that are being projected at this time.

Donnelly's world is made up of three or four "countries" (it's never made quite clear) that are each ruled by a small elite, while the rest of the world lives like the workers in "Metropolis". The elite live better than kings while the masses live a dull gray life on the edge of starvation. Into this world comes a 'settler' from the new "State of Uganda". Whites have taken over the massive plateau of the African Lakes Region and turned it into a prosperous 'Eden-like' garden.

(The racism, sexism, anti-clericalism and anti-semitism in the book is so much the norm at the time it was written that it is unabashedly done. All the women are either mothers or 'Peril of Pauline' types just waiting for a man to save and protect them. Only 'whites' are capable as seen by the take-over and settlement of Africa. The two Jews in the book represent unmitigated evil in the form of slaveholders, while the reverse side is a man who is praised for his use of the 'inate cunning' of his people. The Church comes into its' own as the manifestation of the 'approver of the status quo'.)

Strangely enough, there has been little progress in the 'World'. The rich still ride around in carriages, air-power is limited to Dirigibles, there is no mechanized ground transportation newer than railroads, and a type of one way televised (more like computer CRT) for transferring written messages is used. Beside that, people still use rifles and pistols as their main mode of offensive weapons.

Our "Naif" from Africa has come to see the big city and is first amazed and then disgusted by what he sees as 'open' slavery of the workers and worse 'of white people'. He ends up meeting one of the three heads of the world-wide "Brotherhood of Destruction" (where we meet our cunning Jew) just as they are about to start the revolution.

What Donnelly does do well is to show that "Revolution" by the "People" (no matter how well planned or intentioned) will inevitably lead to a mass riot and slaughter of many of the guilty but also a portion of the innocent. In this he uses the excesses just after the storming of the Bastille as his example. On a world-wide scale, revolution means the end of civilization as we know it.

Luckily, our 'Naif' and his 'woman' are able to 'get back home' while they await the end of the 'orgy of blood' that follows the revolution (which included the killing of two of the three leaders by the mob. All in all it's an interesting read from an historical perspective.

"In this remarkable book, Ajahn Buddhadasa teaches us beautifully, profoundly, and simply the meaning of sunnata, or voidness, which is a thread that links every great school of Buddhism....He teaches us the truth of this voidness with the same directness and simplicity with which he invites us into his forest." — from the foreword by Jack Kornfield

The most straightforward, authoritative, and impressive collection of Dhamma talks on emptiness I have come across, by a teacher embodying the simultaneously ordinary and profound material he teaches. Something to read and contemplate over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Heartwood of the Bodhi Tree.......2000-04-24

This is a real precious gem very clear and sharp. Buddhadasa points his finger and one really forgets the finger and sees exactly what he is pointing at. The most perfect teaching to directly experience and realize, in the very moments of reading. Everybody interested in Buddhism beginner or not can profit, as the book is both easy to read and full of enlightening information of the real nature of our existence. Personally I have read few books with such power and clarity. Buddhadasa shows "Void ness" he dos not merely talk about. This book is heart to heart communication, in the real sense of the words, it is more then fantastic, excellent or great, but it is simply realistic.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, but disappointing........1999-04-12

Although this book is pleasant looking and enjoyable to read, and written by an apparently revered author, I found it a bit disappointing. As a long time student of this subject, sunnata/ voidness/emptiness, as it is presented in Mahayana teachings, I wanted to see if there was anything to be gained from studying Theravadin (Hinayana) teachings on this central Buddhist topic. Perhaps this book disappointed me in that regard because of its format: it is another of those books that was not written as a book, but is merely a collection and reworking of talks the author gave about this subject. As such it did not seem very rigorous in its treatment of this profound subject, but instead it seemed to spend most of its time talking around the subject. I didn't feel that I came away from the reading with much new knowledge or insight. Perhaps it would serve as an introduction to the topic, but anyone who really wanted to make headway in this difficult field would quickly realize the need for more in-depth study and a great deal of meditation training under a qualified teacher.

5 out of 5 stars Getting to the empty heart of Buddhism.......1998-11-06

I read this book, published under the title, Heartwood of the Bo Tree, while I was living in Thailand. It is, in my opinion, an extremely important discussion on the essential truth of Buddhism, stripping away all of the unnecessary glitz which accompanies it in the East and all of the new-age pseudo gurus who speak and write about Eastern religion in the West. I found myself entranced by the text, which is actually a series of lectures, originally given in Thai, to Thai laypeople by a revered senior monk, Buddhadasa Bhikkhu. The sermons methodically and simply explain the simple essence of Buddhism as they cover the most crucial truths which, interestingly, all seem to boil down to one: Emptiness. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is truly interested in Buddhism without all of its trappings, or someone who is struggling to let go of all which causes them sufferring. (i.e. let go of absolutely everything-including their strife for happiness) Hope that doesn't give too much away! I am very pleased to see that this book is now available outside of Thailand, because I loaned my well worn copy to my brother-in-law over two years ago and haven't seen it since. It's still hard not to cling.

"Where Hearts Gather" is a work from the heart. It made me miss all the delicious home cooked food many of us have made in years past, but most of all Susan touched my heart with notations with each recipe and from whom in her circle of family and friends the recipe originated. The recipes in the book are basic to prepare and are a wonderfully nostalgic treat. This is an excellent gift book. Pork Chops and Applesauce: A Collection of Recipes and Reflections

The book offers a lot of useful info such as the origin of pocketknives, how to identifiy some of them and how to identify some counterfeit knives. At 80 pages it's a good start but not a compete index. My particular favorite parts of the book are Mr Levine's insets that offer some interesting info. For example I did not know that WWII ear Nazi knives did not include pocket knives, only fix blade daggers but the many pocket knives sold at knife and gun shows are well done fakes that were made in the US. I think this book would complement any knife collectors library. Some of the examples of the knives discussed are rare and the photos are excellent.

Some of us were really meant for English manor life, but by some error of fate first saw the light of day in Tucson or Saskatoon--c'est la vie. This little book, packed with views of English country houses--their follies and greenhouses, boot racks and bookstacks, gardens and larders--can help make things better.

The content of this book is great, but the size of the book is ridiculous. When they say a little style book, they mean literally a little book. Yes, the book has style, but who want to look at a 4" x 4" book on style or decorating? Too much money for such a book.

An excellent guide to the english country style tradition. It stands out in a field that is already crowded with good works, and at this point is to be considerer a classic.

Knowing that I love English Country style homes, my husband gave this book to me as a Christmas gift. What he did not know was that I had ordered it at the same bookstore and had not been able to pick it up. When I opened it on Christmas morning, what a surprise! This book gives lovely accounts of living life in a true English Country house. With scores of rooms to inspire your own decorating it truly tells the English Country story. Opening this book is like taking a journey to a beautiful land in another time. I highly recommend it and have seen a copy in many, many homes in articles of decorating magazines. It seems everyone has a copy of this fabulous book.

5 out of 5 stars Envirionment and mysticism of Julian of Norwich.......1999-08-31

This book is clearly a result of focused research on the author's part. She has led us into the environment of the reclusive life of Julian of Norwich, an anchoress living during the plague years in England, whose visions resulted from a near-death experience. For about 20 years after that, Julian attempts to make spiritual sense of these visions, and in doing so, she becomes one of the more significant mystics in Christian history, as well as the first woman whose writing we have in English(She was a contemporary of Chaucer). Rev. Okulam connects the reader with Julian in a very intimate way, and also links her mysticism with happenings in our own times. The book is compact, very readable, and holds one's interest.
