      Book Description

Kapralov's work revolves around his years living and working as an artist in New York's East Village in the late 1960's and early 1970's. As Kapralov chronicles the sad and slow deaths of his Slavic compatriots, the exploitation of the naive hippie runaways, the mechanical disintegration of the world in which he lives, his own mental deterioration begins.

"The authentic account of a period by a survivor...Kapralov's background-and gift as a writer-make him the right annalist for the East Village."-The Village Voice

Yuri Kapralov was born in the Caucasus and came to the United States in 1949. He has lived in the East Village, New York City, since 1965. Kapralov has exhibited his paintings, pen-and-inks, and piano constructions in New York and San Francisco, and ran the Sixth Sense Gallery from 1982-87.

      5 out of 5 stars A Classic!!!.......2005-10-08

Yuri wrote this great book titled "once there was a village" and it's one of my all time fav. books. It talks about the REAL NYC when you couldn't even walk a block in alphabet city without getting raped mugged or killed. He lived in the neighborhood back then in the 60's-70's and so he knows all about the BS that went down firsthand. It was just great to read about all that and feel extremely lucky to be in the position that i am now no matter how bleak it can be at times.

5 out of 5 stars Best of its kind.......2004-03-13

I learned of Kapralov's book by reading a book on the downtown scene called Down and In. Kapralov is a natural, and his prose is far more engaging than the self-consciously 'literary' types writing about similar situations. I highly recommend this book.

Addendum -- April 2005 -- Kapralov just died of alcoholism. Rest in peace, my friend. You did well.

5 out of 5 stars Best book of 1999!.......1999-10-23

This book is a REAL piece of New York City history. Set in the East Village in the late '60s, the artist/author's perspective is deeply beautiful and 100% engaging. Literature...history...New York...what more could I ask for?

This stand-alone sequel follows Sharon Stinn's other "Angel" books, Archangel and Jovah's Angel in a series reminiscent of Orson Scott Card's Homecoming in tone and structure. Shinn did some interesting world-building here, and The Alleluia Files takes a close look at the history, progress, and society of Samaria.

Samaria was colonized long ago as a religious utopia. An orbiting satellite doubles as a god; people have worshipped and succored it for centuries. A class system developed due to the existence of genetically engineered "angels" who can fly and communicate with the satellite by singing, and who often lord it over the regular folks.

Tamar is the child of rebellious cultists, raised in the heretical belief that Jovah isn't a god, but merely a technical device set up by ancestors long ago to control weather and events on Samaria. The rebel group is in retreat, with the Archangel Bael on a rampage to capture and kill off as many cultists as possible. Tamar is determined to avenge her friends and family, to free Samaria from the double stranglehold of angelic power and peoples' fear of the "god." Tamar meets Jared, an open-minded angel willing to help her on her quest, and the two disparate young people form an uneasy alliance.

Likable characters, a thoroughly realized setting, and a sense of discovery make The Alleluia Files an enjoyable science fiction tale. --Bonnie Bouman--

          Book Description

Legend has it that the Alleluia Files contain the truth about the god of Samaria. Now, a child raised in captivity among the angels will journey the length and breadth of her world to seek the documents that will alter the face of Samaria forever...

5 out of 5 stars The Truth Comes Out.......2005-03-30

In another compulsively readable novel in Sharon Shinn's Samaria series, the inhabitants of this world finally learn the truth about the spaceship Jehovah, which they have long thought to be the god Jovah. Shinn builds a good and suspenseful plot around twins, one angel, one human, who were separated at birth. A welcome departure from her first couple of Samaria novels which were very enjoyable, but sadly all seemed to have the same plot of Archangel-angelica love story. Another book for my "favorites" shelf.

5 out of 5 stars Marvelous conclusion to her Samaria trilogy!.......2004-03-09

(The first two books are "Archangel" and "Jovah's Angel".) While I admit I preferred the first two books, this is no less brilliant. The shift from fantasy in the first book, to a melding of fantasy and science fiction in the second, to a predominantly sci-fi atmosphere in the third, is fascinating. Her imagery is beautiful, sweeping you up in the magic and wonder of her world and the music it is filled with. Her ideas are fresh, innovative, intriguing - I'd recommend her to anyone who is tired of traditional fantasy. I'd rather not give away the plot if you haven't read the first two because it would spoil the effect of the revelation. Worth reading and re-reading. Want more.

          5 out of 5 stars Don't miss this series.......2003-09-08

Sharon Shinn has created a wonderful world of Samaria and peopled it with great characters. Read the books in order and hope that she adds a 4th to continue what she has started.

5 out of 5 stars Great Conclusion To The Series.......2002-04-17

This third and final volume in Ms. Shinn's Samaria trilogy takes place a hundred years after time of "Jovah's Angel". The society has become industrialized, and a surpressed dissident cult exists which believes that the god Jovah is actually an orbiting spaceship, and that proof of this was found in years past by the Angel Alleluia and later surpressed. Just to clarify things, although angels are main characters in these stories, they are not the heavenly, chubby-cheeked cherubim of greeting cards. They are flesh and blood beings, with all the foibles of humanity.

Samarian society appears to be slowly coming full circle, from what the original settlers envisioned, to that which the settlers originally escaped. Power within the society is shifting away from the angels, and the Archangel appears to be pursuing an agenda of his own which appears to be in direct conflict with his predestined role within that society.

This book tells the story of Tamar, a dedicated cultist, and the angel Jared who become uneasy allies in the search for Alleluia's truths. The Samarian society is once again richly detailed, and if you've been reading the series from the beginning you'll recognize the changes in lifestyle and attitudes that have taken place since the first book. Tamar and Jared are interesting, well-developed characters, initially mistrusting each other, but then coming to accept that their meeting was predestined by Jovah.

4 out of 5 stars Did the Fat Lady sing?.......2002-02-05

Is this the end of the angels? That question rings true in regards to the storyline and the series. Sharon Shinn seems too constricted to her two previous books in the Archangel series in this book. Though it is craftily written, I felt some of the characters lacked the depth of her previous books. But being a second sequel, it is still a must read to find the fate of the Mortal and Angel drama she has created in the last 2 books. While not as wonderfully resonant as her previous novels, this is still a must read for those into the series.

            5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2006-04-17

This is the best work for Alternative evolution yet! I actually like how he made the animals look nothing like things on Earth because they evolved from a completely different orgin. It is even better that it's movie adaption Alien Planet. In alien planet it said that they have eyes, but very weak ones, probably just strong enough to pick up biolights, but not strong enough to have complex vision. I like how they ended up with sonar. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who is as big an evolutionary science nut as I am!

5 out of 5 stars Out of this World!.......2005-07-01

Expedition is a book in the style of Dougal Dixon's "alternitive zoology" books, with the main diffrence being this book takes place on a completley alien world, Darwin IV.
The book itself is amazing. The writing, while not as bad as some reviwers say, is'nt up to Dixon's books, but the artwork is truly where Expedition shines. Darwin IV and it's alien inhabitants jump off the pages, even if some of the creatures look pretty "out there". I highly reccomend Expedition to any fan of scientific fiction.

5 out of 5 stars An unique vision of an alien world!.......2005-05-12

Barlowe has created a rich and exciting world for his readers. We discover this world alog with his main character, who is an intrepid and earnest researcher and artist. Barlowe does not simply spell out every detail of this world, but makes conjectures based on the available data, thus preserving the illusion that this is an actual account of a place that exists.
This book is the template for the new Discovery Channel special on alien worlds. I recommend this book to anyone interested in beautiful art coupled with a fantastic story.

            3 out of 5 stars Good artwork...but..........2005-01-21

Expedition is about an artist's voyage to Darwin Four, in 2358 A.D. The book is his collection of drawings and sketches made during the first manned mission to the planet. Mr. Barlowe is not just an artist, but also has great knowledge about nature and how it works. He tries to mix the two, showing the aliens and explaining how they lived, mated and, sometimes, died. But he leaves so much out - there is very little background on the planet's natural history. We get hints and clues about what early life was like. For example, most creatures use sonar and have biolights, yet are blind. Being blind, the sonar makes sense, but why have biolights then? The atmosphere must have been thick and murky, allowing animals armed with sonar better chances than those armed with eyes, but could the biolights be something from earlier times, before sonar was developed and all animals used visible light?
The science, in other words, is lacking the details I enjoy. It is a great art book, but Dougal Dixon is better at the science, showing evolution and how it works. This is an alien planet and we barely touched the surface of its wonders!
That is why it only gets three points.

5 out of 5 stars Settle down,It's not meant to be real..........2004-01-17

All these people saying that this is a well illustrated but poorly written book shouldn't take it so serioulsy, who cares if the inhabitants are unbelievable. It's a fiction book, none of these reviewers could come up with anything half as imaginitive as Wayne Barlowe... consult a scientist or biologist, yeah right...it's not real.......just have fun with it.

What's more fun: eating food or reading about it? Justifying the latter proposition in style, Best Food Writing 2000 offers an enticing selection of the year's best book, magazine, newspaper, newsletter, and Internet food prose. It culls the work of a wide range of authors, including Maya Angelou, Madhur Jaffrey, Calvin Trillin, and John Thorne--writers associated with food and not. Foodies and nonfoodies alike will welcome Best as a rich source of literary snacking.

Within its five parts, which include "Stocking the Larder," "Dining Around," and "Personal Tastes," the book offers delights such as Eric Asimov on America's most expensive restaurant; Grace Young exploring wok cookery; Anthony Bourdain recounting a chef's day in the life; and Anne Willan on the Burgundian table. Readers will also enjoy Vince Staten on barbecue, Jim Quinn's "Recipes for Dummies," Laura Fraser on giving up vegetarianism, and Trillin on the perfect bagel. What emerges finally from the book is a sense of how we feed ourselves, in every way. A look at this compelling question, plus a host of other food-related matters, makes this collection a small joy. --Arthur Boehm

                        Book Description

A major new annual publication is born. It's a Zagat world, where everyone who isn't trying their hand as a food critic is at least talking about food writing: William Grimes' reviews and R.W. Apple's special reports in the New York Times, Jeffrey Steingarten's monthly Vogue missives, Jim Harrison in Esquire, and Ruth Reichl's revitalized Gourmet. Now is the perfect time to bring together essays, reviews, articles, and other miscellaneous pieces from a wide range of sources: food, travel, and general interest magazines, national and local newspapers, foodie newsletters and even Web sites. Because writing about food turns up in so many disparate places, food lovers will now have the opportunity to enjoy these stellar pieces, all in one place. Selections from writers including R.W. Apple, Alan Davidson, Fran Gage, William Grimes, Jim Harrison, Madhur Jaffrey, Lynne Rossetto Kasper, Nigella Lawson, Paul Levy, Eileen Yin-Fei Lo, Cheryl Mendelson, Catherine Reynolds, Michael Ruhlman, John Thorne, Calvin Trillin, and many others, are included.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Best of Food Writing Series (So Far).......2003-12-06

This is my favorite volume of the Best of Food Writing series so far (late 2003). It introduced me to Ruth Reichl and Anthony Bourdain, whose books I might not have discovered if I had not read their excerpts here first.

By collecting material from a variety of sources (books, magazines, webzines, newspapers), Hughes has given us access to more, and better, food writing than we would have hunted down ourselves. The result is fabulous.

I was so impressed with Laura Fraser's piece on why she stopped being a vegetarian, reprinted from Salon.com. The topic is unexpected, the writing seems effortless, and she really made me think about the subject in a different way. Then I had to find what else she had written and was captivated by An Italian Affair. I also started reading Salon.com.

Read all the Best of Food Writing series, but be sure to read this one first!

5 out of 5 stars A "Best" Title Well Deserved.......2003-08-19

From straight forward food writing, to stories that food plays a award winning supporting role; this is a delightful collection of stories that will keep you engrossed from begininning to end. Some surprising, some informative, a few heartfelt, and some down right funny!

3 out of 5 stars Let's hope this series continues in future.......2000-12-06

The first in what I can only hope will be an annually released collection of articles culled from various food magazines, newsletters, newspapers and web sites.

The book is set up in five sections: Stocking the Larder, Home Cooking, Someone's in the Kitchen, Dining Around and Personal Tastes. This works nicely as you get various views and ideas regarding similar topics. You also get the various topics listed as sections: a full section of articles on choosing foods, one on cooking at home, etc.

There are articles by such food luminaries as Ruth Reichl, Calvin Trillin, Phyllis Richman, John Thorpe, and Micheal Ruhlman among others.

The book serves as a good introduction for those interested in food and like topics. If you like the article "Natural Born Keller" by Michael Ruhlman, you'll probably enjoy his full length book "The Soul of a Chef." Enjoying Anthony Bourdain's humorous excerpt from his "Kitchen Confidential" will suggest you go find a copy of that to get the rest of his story. I enjoyed John Thorpe's article enough to visit his website, and plan on purchasing at least one of his 3 or 4 books of article collections.

The other above mentioned food luminaries have full length books, or collections, in print that you can decide to try or plan on avoiding based on the 5 to 10 page selections by Ms. Hughes.

The other introduction you are given is to the various magazines that are out there: Gourmet, Wine Spectator, etc. are represented here. Again, by reading articles that are representative of these magazines, you get a feel for your tastes in writing.

If you have any interest in food, restaurants, chefs, etc., you need to check this book out.

Diehard fans of Susan Branch are likely to scoop her works up two at a time (one for me, one for Mom/sis/girlfriend ...) -- what's extra lovely about this volume of postcards is that there's two of each design! So one set to keep for yourself, another to send out to all your dearest friends and fellow-Branch fans. Or one set to keep, another for framing and decorating ... The cards are nicely perforated for easy removal. A must for any Branch afficianado,

This is a nice, compact (80 pages, 8.5 X 11" in size) reference book full of photos from which brides can choose their wedding floral arrangements and bouquets. This is not at all a step-by-step, how-to book, and I don't believe it was written or marketed to be one. It is simply a photo book with brief introductions regarding how to choose your flowers, what flowers are in season in what months, a reference to bouquet shapes, etc. The publisher of this book publishes floral reference books for retail florists so think of it as the type of book you use in a flower shop to pick out your wedding flowers. I own a custom floral design shop and that's how it is used in my store.

                              Book Description

This is a new critical edition of the legal treatise by John of Ibelin, count of Jaffa and Ascalon (died 1266). John was a leading magnate in the Latin East, and his first-hand experience of the courts meant that he was well-placed to write authoritatively on his subject. His work is in French and describes in detail the procedures of the High Court of the kingdom of Jerusalem, and the law as administered there.

The treatise has long been recognized as being of fundamental importance for the legal, institutional and social history of the Latin settlements in the Levant, and this is the first edition to take into account all the surviving medieval manuscripts and the first to be published since 1841.

In it, he offers timeless spiritual wisdom as he shares with us the fascinating accounts of his life experiences and the realization of his own extraordinary mediumistic gifts. His writing is genuine and sincere, delightful and educational, entertainingly spine-tingling, awesome and lovely, and it offers very serious and important information at the same time. In his charming voice, he chronicles his early days giving wonderful details about his relationships with his family and friends, his amazing journeys abroad, his Spiritualist affiliations and the processess he goes through in his experiences with direct communications with the spirit world. Discover how Mr. Hurst develops into one of the world's most important spiritual teachers of our time.

What can we learn from reading Heaven Can Help? This book inspires me with awe and wonder and challenges one to think about one's own existence. So, read it if you have the courage to. Universal, important messages resonate through this book--that we are energetic beings that survive our bodies after death, that we simply must be aware, and that we are very much surrounded by those who love and help us from the heaven world. This story will instill hope and peace where there is none; it will remind those who have forgotten, to have faith and comfort again; and it will confirm and validate the truth of the heart and the soul for those who are already on a level of awareness. Heaven Can Help ought to be pre-requisite reading for Life! If everyone read this book, it might make the world on this earth plane a nicer place to be. There would be more conscious understanding and compassion among human beings and for animals.

Brian Edward Hurst is a treasure. Yes, indeed Heaven can help, and Mr. Hurst has helped Heaven and Earth as he continues to be of service to mankind in the marvelous healing work that he does helping us to connect with ourselves, with our loved ones here and in the beyond, and thus with universal truth. 5 out of 5 stars A Very Charming Book........!!.......2002-05-12

This is a very charming book by Brian Hurst. It starts out a little slow for my taste, but it picks up, and becomes very interesting. The first part of the book is mostly about Brian's childhood, and how he felt different from most children, and how he did not have a very good relationship with his parents, always trying to please them, but not able to, by no fault of his own. His Mother wasn't exactly the most supportive person in his life. He stumbles and bumbles about learning of his extraordinary psychic abilities, finally to become at ease with them, and how these abilities grew into an amazing side of Brian Hurst and furthered his awesome career/life. There is no doubt at all about his honesty and sincerity of all the events that take place, and you almost wish you could invite him over for dinner to chat about all of this. All in all it is a very enjoyable book, worth the money. He is a very believable fellow, who seems like he could live next door to you and you might not know how amazing he really is! But beware, the first two chapters are boring and too involved in his childhood, which is not exactly the most fascinating reading, but it DOES get better! I'm giving him 5 stars because I truly believe him, and he has a fascinating life! Brian, why don't you come to Hawaii so I can meet you !!? Bottom line.....buy the book, it's worth it.

                                  Book Description

Where does one begin? The whole of life is a great mystery. To be snuffed out like a candle at the end of a busy life seems totally unreasonable and pointless. That is why I had to record the amazing things I witnessed during my journey here, so that others may have hope and strength to continue in their search for truth.

So begins Heaven Can Help, the true story of a sensitive Englishman who discovers he can speak with the dead. Through his conversations with departed loved ones, Brian Edward Hurst learns that life after death is for everyone.

As a small child, Hurst was inquisitive and curious, and seventy years of living has not changed that. From his travels in India to his work with the Parents of Murdered Children group, he describes his deeply moving encounters with the spiritual realms, his investigation of psychic surgery, and his hosting of the Scole Experimental Group from England. Hurst describes the astonishing phenomena that took place in the darkened garage of his Reseda home, proving the reality of a spiritual dimension.

An essential guide filled with real-life stories, photos from Hurst's private collection, and a list of suggested readings, Heaven Can Help will excite, amuse, and comfort those who seek deeper meaning and purpose to their earthly journey.
