    Book Description

The lost stories include many newly discovered tales. Written while she was completing LITTLE WOMEN, the thrillers that Alcott scribbled in her Boston attic were drawn from her experiences, from her reading, and even from her dreams. Her characters are infused with life, and each story is an engaging potboiler that leaves the reader in suspense until the very last paragraph.

    5 out of 5 stars Fascinating subject.......2006-10-24

I would never have bought this book but I read a romance novel with the two main characters heavily into S&M - one to extreme violence. I couldn't understand the appeal of wanting to dominate or needing to be dominated to the extent of violence, demeaning subjugation, pain and blood letting. So I searched out a book that would be well written on the subject and was told this was the best of the best.

This book is well written, extremely intense and edgier then erotica in most books. The hard core s/m porn and collection of very rough and sometimes bloody stories isn't what I was actually looking for but it does substantiate that the audience is out there.

I am hoping to find a book that will help me understand why going to the extreme of domination and submission isn't perceived as a health issue.

I rated the book 5 stars as I imagine this is probably one of the best books out there based on the quality of writing.

Make sure to read the 20 page introduction, it grabs you from the opening sentence.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you, Pat!.......2006-07-08

This was the "Mr. Benson" for us leatherdykes. I can't tell you how many of us used to use character names as our secret codes for what we were into and what we were looking for. Hard core s/m porn written by someone who has really done this stuff - and it shows.

5 out of 5 stars Not for the weak willed or easily icked.......2003-06-11

A collection of very rough and often bloody porn from Pat Califia. These aren't nice romantic tells, these stories cross gender lines, orientation boundaries, and get into SM in ways that only gay male writing had done before. If you like your sex rough yet the plots still deep and consider your constutition strong, you check out this book. I, personally, find a lot of the stories too intense but there are a few I've read over and over and I do not normal like lesbian SM porn.

    5 out of 5 stars Quite the eye/heart/mind opener!.......2000-08-05

This was my BDSM "coming out" book. No, MACHO SLUTS, isn't for the faint of heart. I first read it many years ago and was both shaken and thrilled to have my ideas about what constitutes normality, pleasure, pain and love so thoroughly brought into question. It was a riveting read. I had trouble putting it down even when I was finished. To this day I will pick up my ragged copy and re-read it. Again, it's NOT for the faint of heart -- or for those who are dyed-in-the-wool vanilla. If your mind is closed and your world is small, this book will scare the s--- out of you. Personally, I loved it. It's one of my all-time favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Not for the timid!.......2000-05-12

Pat Califia's intense collection of lesbian erotica starts with a bang and does not slow down until the end of the final story. These are stories of possible realities, not fantasy or science fiction which I usually prefer and yet the characters and plots were so wonderfully interwoven with passioniate SM and sex that I found myself enjoying most of the stories. Definately a collection I return to every now and then.

Lucy Taylor has a rare gift of writing horror stories about sex that are extremely provocative, and yet touched as well as with longing, even wistfulness. In these nine tales about demons and angels, wrestlers and boxers, and other denizens of a netherworld of erotic terror, she achieves just the right balance of a bleak, unflinching worldview, and characters whose need for fulfillment reveals their underlying humanity. Unnatural Acts includes her classic "The Safety of Unknown Cities," which won a Bram Stoker Award when expanded to novel length.

4 out of 5 stars Only 4 those sick of the same old bland erotic horror . . ........2003-02-24

Unnatural Acts is a 190-page collection of Lucy Taylor's erotically charged horror filled short stories. The title pretty much says it all but take one look at the cover featuring a backside view of a squatting unclothed beastly looking woman giving birth to frogs while a shocked voyeur looks on and you'll realize this isn't stuff for the faint of heart.

Taylor takes readers on a journey into the darkest realms both real and imagined. She writes with unflinching brutality about the grotesque, the disgusting, the shocking and nothing is taboo. I read this in one fell swoop, unable to stop even when repulsed beyond belief, until I had finished the very last page. The standout story for me just happens to be the one depicted so grossly on the cover called "Baubo's Kiss". It tells about a plain young woman on a trip with her faithless girlfriend who discovers her sexuality in a most unexpected place. Her transformation from doormat to goddess was awe-inspiring. "Making the Woman" is probably the story that disturbed me the most. It's very short but unforgettable. It's about two troubled twelve year olds who have seen way too much of the dark side of life. One day they decide to make themselves a woman. The cold calculated way in which they perform their task and the final revelation is haunting. "Idol" is a dark, dirty tale about a young man named Conners who is obsessed with a wrestler. When Darius the Python picks Conners out of the crowd to be his sexual partner for the night Conners romantic dreams of forever come true in an unexpectedly twisted way. Many of the other stories feature cruel men while revenge and the search for pleasure (even when the cost may be intense pain or death) is a common thread that binds them.

Lucy Taylor writes extreme horror that can be very unpleasant to read. So, do I recommend it? Yes, but only if you know what you're in for. You've been warned. Now go find a copy of the book!

    ~LS

4 out of 5 stars Bold erotic horror........1998-04-01

In this collection Lucy Taylor achieves something very difficult and presents us with nine very sex-centric tales without ever losing a handle on her plot or characters (something which, say, Poppy Z. Brite has continually failed at.) A woman searches for a lost city of sin; a hitman meets the love of his life - after death; a young man learns the dangers of idol worship backstage at a wrestling tournament; the spell of a forgotten goddess awakens forbidden lust in a bored Greek tourist. Very explicit (but never gratuitous), often psychological and complex (see the title story) and recommended for the adventurous horror reader.

      Book Description

In 1647, William Lilly, renowned throughout England, sat down to write his famous book on astrology. He was ill, but he had foreseen that. He decided that rather than struggle with clients while sick, he would give himself a year to study, reflect, and write. But before he was quite finished with his book, plague swept through London, killing two of his servants, and forcing Lilly and family to flee to the countryside.

This is Book Three, An Easie and plaine Method Teaching How to judge upon Nativities, the conclusion of his great work, Christian Astrology.

In this astounding book, Lilly gives not only his own hard-won knowledge of natal astrology, but also what he gleaned from close study of the greatest astrologers in history, as found in his own astrological library, one of the largest of its day. In this book you may learn:

      • How to determine the Hyleg, or Apheta, the Prorogator of Life.
      • How to determine intelligence, stature, shape and complexion of the native.
      • If the native will be rich, and, if so, whether by fair means or foul.
      • The illnesses he may suffer, if he may die a violent death.
      • Of Marriage: The number and kinds of spouses, where they may come from, if there will be children or not, and if so, an idea of their number.
      • The kind of career best suited to the native, and much more.

In the section on Directions and Forecasting, Lilly gives comprehensive interpretations for Primary Directions, Solar Returns and Profections. The book concludes with a priceless analysis of the Nativity of an English Merchant, including more than twenty years of forecasts, up to the time that Lilly judged to be the end of the man's natural life.

For the first time, unique to this edition: Spelling and verbs modernized. Glossary of obscure terms, including Latin words and phrases. Calculations in modern format. All 24 solar returns and all 12 profection charts in standard wheel format. Fixed star positions updated to 1 January 2005. Modern symbols for aspects (including minor aspects) used throughout. Primaries untangled, as much as possible.

Available separately: Christian Astrology, (books 1 & 2): An Introduction to Astrology, The Resolution of All Manner of Questions, by William Lilly.

      A Masterful Lilly

For any astrologer or scholar who wants a copy of William Lilly's classic text, this is the only edition to consider. David Roell of Astrology Classics has completely re-set the text in a modern font in this beautiful edition. A number of Lilly's original pages, tables and page headings as well as all of the original horoscopes have been reproduced to give the reader the flavor of Lilly's elaborate 1647 publication. The editor has taken great pains to meticulously follow the original Lilly text while artfully updating the language and formatting to produce an extremely attractive and readable volume.

This edition has a number of extras that place it at the top of the available Lilly texts. Along with Lilly's original charts, all the horoscopes are calculated and printed in modern format with explanations of necessary date and time adjustments. There are helpful margin notes, a glossary of terms, an updated fixed star list, and a re-ordered index, plus the editor's preface and invaluable explanatory notes. My only regret is that such a superior edition of Lilly isn't available in a gold embossed durable hardback to match the skilled editing within. Individual pages of this edition can be previewed here: [...]

This is the second of a set of two volumes which cover Lilly's entire original text. Be sure to check out the matching first volume and the comprehensive review by Christopher Warnock. As Amazon advises, buy both volumes together. There will never be a better Lilly for your library.

5 out of 5 stars a must have book .......2007-01-12

for those who seek a deeper understanding in ancient astrology, this is a book one should have under his hands. an enciclopedia of knowledge, and tips, saves hundreds of hours of searching the net. It will take a long time until I will " absorb" the whole book, but I never start analysing a map without it.

5 out of 5 stars Classical Astrology Text Book.......2007-01-04

In the past 15 years Modern Astrologers have been researching and uncovering the History of their craft. Christian Astrology, book 3: Nativities by William Lilly was published in 1647. This edition has been meticulously researched and published by David Roell of The Astrology Center of America. I particularly like the Glossary of Terms in Appendix 4 which defines many of the more difficult terms in Lilly's text. Lilly's presentation of Natal Astrology is detailed with references to ancient practices as well as practices of the 17th century. This information is helpful in understanding the origin of the basic principles of astrological techniques. Specific examples of astrological aspects reflect the more fated atmosphere of the time. I find that a comprehensive study of Lilly's text in concert with modern astrological practices enriches the appreciation of our astrological traditions. Lilly's text requires the committment of a serious student but is well worth the effort.

      5 out of 5 stars A very useful book.......2003-05-28

This is a fascinating book and makes Vedic astrology very simple to understand. B V Raman's expositon of the subject is insightful.

Too long astrology has suffered in the hands of quacks. It is high time that educated people with logical temprament started touching astrology. This book goes a long way in that direction.

B V Raman combines the learning of many eastern savants on the subject in two volumes. The result is a powerful , and yet very succint, exposition of astrology in a way that appeals to a logical and scientific mind .

As a practioner of Vedic astrology for last 10 years, I recommend this book to all. It will benefit beginers, intermediate and advanced practioners of astrology.

                      Book Description

Long acknowledged as the inspiration for such modern masters as Julia Child and Claudia Roden, A Book of Mediterranean Food is Elizabeth David's passionate mixture of recipes, culinary lore, and frank talk. In bleak postwar Great Britain, when basics were rationed and fresh food a fantasy, David set about to cheer herself --and her audience-- up with dishes from the south of France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, and the Middle East. Some are sumptuous, many are simple, most are sublime.

                      5 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2005-05-30

I agree with a previous reviewer that this is not the bast format for a cookbook. You cannot lay it open on the counter to glance at while you go about preparing a recipe. However, I feel that this book is less about recipes and more about technique. If you are the kind of person who enjoys reading cookbooks to learn new techniques to use in the kitchen, this book is very useful. If you want a book to prop up on the counter while you cook, it is not. I would also note that "A Book of Mediterrenean Food" is a good source of culinary history and an interesting read if you want to know more about where dishes have come from.
Many of the recipes are very simple, with few ingredients. Having read her recipe for Gazpacho, I can tell that it is wholely different than the Gazpacho that I am use to making - there is very little seasoning, and the recipe relies less on herbs and spices and more on the natural flavors of the ingredients - and to prepare Ms. David's recipe will require extremely fresh, high quality vegetables. This appears to be true of many of the recipes in this book.
I thoroughly enjoy Ms. David's writing. She is sharp and witty, even writing about something as mundane as soup. I am very happy that I purchased this book, and I'm sure that I will refer back to it for recipes and techniques for a long time.

5 out of 5 stars Literate Fountainhead of Much Culinary Writing.......2004-01-14

This volume is one of the very few culinary titles published over fifty years ago, which is not only still in print, but still influencing how people think about food. To understand the importance of the book, it is more than usually important to place it in context, in the England of 1950 which was just coming out of six years of World War II followed by four years of rationing austerity, when a pound of butter was difficult to find and olive oil was sold by the pint in apothecaries `for external use only'.

Complimentary blurbs from Alice Waters can be found on many books nowadays, but this one I know is more heartfelt than usual. Based on Jeremiah Tower's recent memoir, I know David influenced both Waters and Tower. She was also a major influence on later writers on Mediterranean cuisine such as Claudia Roden and Paula Wolfert.

David's notion of Mediterranean cuisine is somewhat limited to the western and central European coasts of Spain, France, Italy, and Greece, even though David did live and work in Egypt during World War II. Even here, she seems to color outside the lines a bit, reaching as far north and west as Lyon and Bordeaux. There is little here from North Africa. There is not even a mention of couscous in the index. To remedy this deficiency, David refers us to Claudia Roden's excellent book on Near Eastern food.

I can imagine that the recipes, foodstuffs, and stories of the Mediterranean shores had much the same influence on post-war Londoners as Provence had on the painting of Cezanne. David's word pictures brought the bright light and blue seas into the London parlors and stirred an interest, which had been dormant for over 10 years. The evidence of this was that, against all expectations, the book sold very well in 1950 and it has been reissued with new introductions in 1958, 1065, 1988, and 2002, the last time with the Foreword by Clarissa Dickson Wright of `Two Fat Ladies' fame.

David's recipe writing is very much tied to her times and her English public school and university education. There is no hint of food processor or blender, let alone microwave. All purees are done with mortar and pestle. For those who are not familiar with this venerable tool, let me assure you that with little effort, if will often give equal or better results than the electric gizmos of today, especially with classics such as aioli and pesto. Just check out the pleasure Jamie Oliver shows in using it. The style of recipe writing may also be unfamiliar. David is assuming that the reader is a knowledgeable cook. She takes for granted, for example, that you know how to peel tomatoes and cook potatoes for salads or puree. Most directions are spare. Ms. Wright testifies that she often uses them as reminders of how to write a concise recipe.

The names of things may also be unfamiliar. Eggplants are called aubergines and porcini mushrooms are called cepes. These were not hard, but the reference to marrows (courgettes) sent be scurrying to the Larousse Gastronomique. They are zucchini. Many dish names are given in their untranslated French, Italian, Spanish, or Greek. Some other familiar dishes are given unfamiliar names. What I know as the Roman specialty saltimbocca is named `Norman's Recipe'.

The text is a joy to read. It is sprinkled with culinary quotes from a great many literary sources. In Alice Waters words `Her words reach all my senses. The life around the table, the setting, the conversation - not just the food - are all part of her inimitable aesthetic.'

This book can be read on at many different levels.

First, it can be taken as simply a book of recipes, but if that were all there was, the book would not have survived as long as it has.

Second, it can be read as a culinary travelogue to spark one's imagination. The section on Spanish rice dishes is a good example of just enough to get you interested, without being so thin as to gloss over important issues. (One of my few complaints with the book is that for Italian rice dishes, the book simply specifies `Italian' rice. As we all know after hundreds of hours of risottos on the Food Network, the Italian arborio rice is good, but the Italian rice carnaroli is better.)

Third, it can be a source of forgotten facts about some common dishes. I was surprised, for example, to find the recipe for aioli to include bread crumbs. Who knew!

Lastly, the book can be read as a historical document, the first book by someone who will come to influence a generation of culinary writers. I suspect David's later books on French and Italian cuisines had more material to inspire professional chefs like Alice Waters, but it all started here.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best format for a cookbook.......2002-05-16

The charming little format that makes the NYRB Classics series work so well for novels and memoirs actually works against this classic cookbook. The pages are so small and tightly bound that it's practically impossible to open this little paperback book open and cook from it: moreover, the publishers seemed to use a slightly different typeface for every single different preface David wrote for different editions of this book (all collected here) as well as for Wright's new foreword, which creates something of a headache.

The book in and of itself is something of a marvel, though. Elizabeth David was one of the first British or American writers to popularize Mediterranean cooking at mid-century, and this, the first of her cookbooks, is a true classic: superbly written, it will leave you hungry to sample the dishes she describes and recommends.

This book brings the Bible to everyone not through their eyes, but through their stomachs! It was a great tool to plan our own "cooking school" and our church congregation had a ball. In fact, they are wondering when we are going to do it over again!

                                      Book Description

The richly woven and embroidered textiles in this book belong to the Miao minority group of Guizhou province in southwest China. The Miao's elaborate festival costumes are not only their most important possessions, but can be considered the major living visual art form of their culture. Over 20 such textiles from the British Museum's stunning collection are examined and illustrated in full and in detail to provide designers at all levels with inspiration for new and imaginative ideas. In her fascinating introduction the author brings the pieces to life by setting them within their social and cultural context, including information on the decorative techniques, patterning, and stitches that distinguish one group from another. In addition, brief commentaries highlight the design features and a technical glossary supports the main text so you can rely on the book for eye-catching patterns as well as refer to it for specific information.

This is a thorough examination of these very-detailed textiles and the people who make them. I'm thrilled with this little 'gem' of a book! Thanks!!

An incredible, COMPLETELY ORIGINAL hadcore erotic art book, by the master. this book is not for your coffe table. If you haven't heard of this guy, this is the place to start.

Steel and Flesh fuse in this collection of scince fiction erotic art. Realistic presentations of soldier women with thier blades and guns, and trussed up, harnesed submissives are all portraied in stunningly realistic detail.

From the Spike Heeled, gas mask wearing, machine gun totin, latex covered "Commando" who's breasts are amply framed under the clear latex of her suit....to the erotic, wild haired, amizonian beauty clad in a fishnet ninja suit in three stages of completion, "Ninja Girl" is suitable for framing.

Amazon warrior women and cyborgs aren't the only thing you'll find herin though. Erotica like "Chaps" which is a woman wearing....you guessed it, chaps...in a stunningly sensual pose which is both challenging and vunerable. Another of a lady who's something of a morph of a bighorn sheep.....who's 'secret gate' is tantalisingly displayed.

Sorayama's chosen form of art gives the ability to display the human form in ways which are in reality, impossible....somehow this does not come across as akward or just plain strange looking as I've seen some forms of art like this do. The cybernetics, bondage, lace, wires, or whatever he chooses to use as decor for the female form blend beautifally.

These works in the book are suitable for framing should you choose to do so, but I would hate to cut up the book for this purpose personally.
