Book Description
"The only one of my contemporaries who I felt had more talent than myself was James Jones. And he has also been the one writer of any time for whom I felt any love."-Norman Mailer
Paris. May, 1968. This is the Paris of the barricaded boulevards of rebelling students' strongholds, of the literati, the sexual anarchists, the leftists-written chillingly of a time in French history closely paralleling America in the late '60s. The reader sees, feels, smells and fears all the turmoil of the frightening social quicksand of 1968.
James Jones (1921â1977) established himself as one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century with his WWII trilogy, From Here to Eternity (National Book Award winner), The Thin Red Line and Whistle.
Customer Reviews:
Perhaps his best.......2004-08-17
For those of us who thought James Jones could only write war stories, this relatively obscure title is a nice surprise. Of course, there is a warlike element to the story's backdrop of 1968 Paris, but ultimately the student riots are just that - a backdrop.
The main focus of the story is on the descent of an American expat family into chaos, in part as a reflection of the generational divides laid bare by the riots. There are bits of sex and violence thrown into the mix (although far more of both are referred to indirectly without actually being portrayed), but the story is more concerned with changing values and the bonds of family and friendship than with anything melodramatic. It turns out that Jones was far better at telling such a tale than his earlier and better known novels had let on.
Since most of the lead characters are defined by their uglier sides, there aren't many people to root for. But as the story progresses, it increasingly becomes a story of the well-to-do American community in Paris as a whole, which makes for a somewhat more sympathetic picture. Jones also did a great job of bringing in real-life events of May-June 1968 on both sides of the Atlantic to influence his fictional characters and their story, which is told from the point of view of an intimate observer of the chaos just a few weeks after it's all over. Is it really the end of an era for the Americans of Paris, or just for one dysfunctional family? For once, as the reader, you're free to decide on your own.
A Great Novel -- Could Be A Great Film.......2002-09-29
A classic that stands the test of time. Note the parallels with Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises.
Courageous, unflinching portrayals of Americans in Paris.
Bertolucci's upcoming film covers the same time period. But this novel's the Real Thing.
I'm tired of dumb...reviews.......2002-09-27
... "The Merry Month of May" is a brilliant, perfectly structured novel which was misunderstood when it was first published, and is apparently still misunderstood. Like Jake Barnes in "The Sun Also Rises," Hartley is a wounded man who finds himself emotionally impotent to help the people he loves most, even when his own godchild's future is in question. He is an observer, in the tradition of Barnes, or Nick Carraway, and to observe is his JOB. His own feelings of guilt and shame come from the very fact that he can't bring himself to act, take sides, or take a stand, even when his friends demand it of him. This is actually, in my estimation, one of the few novels of its time that deals honestly and compassionately with women's true roles in the "sexual revolution" of the Sixties.
Hasn't Aged Well.......2001-09-24
The Merry Month of May is centered on the student protests of May 1968 in Paris. Jones' protagonist, Jack Hartley, is a middle-aged American writer who is friends with a family personally affected by the summer's events. The family, the Gallaghers, consist of Harry, a sex-crazed film writer, his long-suffering wife Louisa, and their rebellious, anarchist-wannabe son, Hill. Hill is involved with a radical group bent on filming the protests; Harry's sympathy and help is not welcomed by the boy. Meanwhile, Harry is having a hard time remaining faithful to his wife. Obviously, little of this has anything to
do with Jack Hartley. Because of Hartley's outsider status, he is able to make witty comments about the absurdity of the young idealists' perceptions of the world and the worth of what they are doing. However, Hartley's irrelevance to the action shows in dull passages where he is simply walking around before, during, and after riot action. He is an annoying meddler in the Gallaghers' problems; despite insistent claims to the reader that
he doesn't want to get involved, he continually does so. Here politics and social upheaval are awkwardly mixed with sexual dalliances, particularly Harry's irresponsible ones, for which Hartley condemns him. Gallagher's wife is portrayed as nearly a saint, while all the other women in the book (sexually
liberated by 1968 standards) are physically described at length in vulgar terms, considered amoral if not evil, and whatever efforts they make for the cause are belittled by male characters. This is not uncommon for a novel published in 1970, and perhaps it says something about the so-called sexual revolution that Jones can so easily milk it for sexploitation. Or, perhaps, it just says something about Jones.
Jones' writing has improved since the clunky, adverb-heavy prose of From Here to Eternity, or perhaps he simply acquired better editors by this, his sixth, novel. The book is at times funny in a cynical way that seems before its time, but for the most part, it's windy, too distanced, and terribly dated.

Sharantyr vs Malaugrym.......2003-10-30
Sharantyr, a recurring character in this series, and her friends, battle Malaugrym. Oh, other stuff happens, yes, but the most important and memorable parts are the Malaugrym.
This book was the first time I remember reading about these creatures, and I found them fascinating. The main characters actually invade the Malaugrym's home on whatever that other plane is that they live on, and have a suspense-filled time waltzing through a Malaugrym mansion. It is really quite entertaining.
Make the Bad Man Stop!.......2001-08-28
Where's a good mage war when you need one? While Mr. Greenwood is a master of describing the intricacies of spell battles, his skills at characters development and human interaction are tragically underdeveloped. One gets the impression that every heroic character in his works has the same sophomoric, sarcastic sense of humor; the same selfless devotion to good causes (usually without any motivation); and the same overly sexualized past (read his books and you'll see what I mean) without any real follow-through in the present-day. The villains are even worse. I had to force myself to finish this book (nee trilogy) because I paid good money for it and I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I didn't. Overall, this was a sadly disappointing work from an icon of game design. Please focus more on your strengths, Mr. Greenwood.
One of the best..........2001-05-10
... not just of Greenwood's works, but just of Fantasy in general. The novel picks up directly where the last one left off, and flows without a hitch. The Rnagers Three return as the main heros of the novel, with Elminster and the Knights of Myth Drannor (all FR regulars) spiraling in to give life to Greenwoods infamous humor. (Check out the chapter "There's always revenge". that cracks me up every time i read it.) while the battle scenes (specificly the one for Mistledale) are rather unrealistic (70 v 7000, 70 win with maybe 20 casualties...) they are fun and very well crafted. The way that Greenwood lights from perspective to perspective draws the reader in, and the Maulaugrym provide entertaining and origional villians. THe trilogy was created to be a more perosnal look at the Time of Troubles (as opposed to the Avatar Trilogys wider world-based view) and the two complement eachother nicely, although Greenwood is the better of the three writters. I recomend this to everyone and anyone who enjoys FR and Fantasy novels.
Leaves a lot to be desired.......2000-04-22
I really wanted to like this series of books because I think Ed Greenwood is an extremely creative writer (he'd have to be to create the entire Forgotten Realms setting), but I was completely disappointed. This series exemplifies the worst aspect of his writing. There were times when fifty pages would go by and I couldn't really think of one significant thing that happened to advance the plot. Over and over, a new enemy--one of the Malaugrym--is introduced, tries to kill Elminster or one of the other protagonists, and then ends up dying himself. It gets really old really quick. This entire series could have easily been fit into one novel instead of a trilogy. However, I will say that the best part about this series is the witty dialogue and the character of Elminster. There were many times when I actually laughed out loud. If Greenwood's brand of humor appeals to you, then this series may be worth checking out. Otherwise, I would suggest reading books that have better storylines, for example, Salvatore and Cunningham.
A Magical Thrill ride.......1999-12-21
While the series isn't a literary smash, it is solid fun reading. The battles are well choreographed, despite the fact the good guys don't really look like they'll lose. This leads a lot of fans to despise the Zhentilar as push over baddies. However, Ed does return with his tongue in cheek humor, and the wonderful descriptive voice he uses. While not nearly a pulitzer quality book, it does a good job at being what it is...a fun adventure. I would like to note, that the book Elminster: Making of a Mage is a super jump after this one, as would be the Avater series. And lastly, when Mystra says "Elminster cannot last forever" at the end, Ed leaves you wide eyed at the possibility for "Elminster:The Death of a Mage", will it ever happen? Wait and see.

Intriguing from Beginning to End.......2007-02-28
Of the three X-Files novelizations by Kevin J. Anderson, I think I like this one best. The plot is fast-paced and the story line is mysterious.
It's a shame that there are only a few X-Files novelizations by Anderson and other authors. I loved the show and am just discovering these books.
Now, it's too bad there aren't any "Millennium" novelizations!
Supernatural happenings in a nuclear age.......2005-11-11
This is a review of the audiobook version of Ground Zero by Kevin Anderson read by Gillian Anderson.
Set against the world of government sponsored nuclear weapons research , Ground Zero has agents Mulder and Scully investigating the death of a researcher who is blown to bits - but the rest of his office is intact. There is no known personal sized nuke- so what happened? The audiobook is read by Gillian Anderson , and the abridgement has the focus on Scully's part of the investigation and the unlikely supernatural conclusion that takes the agents to the south pacific and the site of a planned above ground test of a new super weapon.
Anderson's reading is great! I got a good chuckle out of her comments about how that Mulder's theories were bound to be way out there and not grounded in science. Well paced, the book moves along with action and theory and some cool supernatural mysticism concerning a lost tribe , wiped out by an above ground nuclear test in the 50s and their long journey to retribution and vengeance from beyond......
Disappointing.......2005-02-28
I was excited to know that there was another X-files book make by Kevin Anderson because I love how well he writes his novels.
I was disappointed when I finished the book. Here are the positives and the negatives I found.
On the positive side it was detailed.
On the negative side I found that the main plot of the story seemed a long way away from what was happening. I felt lost and confused at the end.
I really wish that it had not been drawn out so much. I understand that it was meant to build suspense but I didn't understand anything until the last seventy pages.
If you are going to read Kevin J. Anderson's novels read: "The X-files Antibodies
I Enjoyed This Book.......2004-03-13
I enjoyed this book but i thought i could have been better. While reading this book i felt like Mulder was left out alot. But the book kept my attention. Although i thought it could have been better i reccomend this book.
Good idea- weak execution.......2003-05-26
Now having read 7 books either written or co-written by Kevin J. Anderson,(3 Star Wars, 3 X-Files and 1 Dune) I can say that the man has good ideas, I just don't think that his writing is all that absorbing. As with his Star Wars books, his X-Files books never quite ring true of the characters. As for the cases, they are pretty good, but it isn't Mulder and Scully who are chasing down the monsters. Of all the new X-Files books, Charles Grant's "Whirlwind" nails the characters of Mulder and Scully, but the case isn't particularly involving.

Celebrating Women's Work in Art.......2000-06-30
This collection of essays is indispensable for anyone interested in women's contributions to fine art of the 19th century. Despite its original focus on the artist Barbara Bodichon (a close friend of the author George Eliot) the essays included provide a comprehensive overview of the issues all female artists faced in acquiring education and social acceptance, as well as well-researched insights on their work as critics and feminist activists. All essays are by top scholars in the field and complement more focused studies such as Deborah Cherry's 'Painting Women: Victorian Women Artists' (1993), and Pamela Gerrish Nunn's 'Canvassing' (1986). The collection's only notable drawback is the lack of a summary bibliography.

Interesting!.......2005-12-21
I thought this book showed some very interesting projects to make using polymer clay -- ideas that I have never seen done before. Well illustrated and easy to follow, I recommend this book to anyone who is looking to make some truly unique clay items.
Exciting projects that make you want to redecorate your home.......2002-12-03
I really liked this book -- I have about 12 books on Polymer clay and this is one of the best. Does a good job going over all the basics, but the projects are what make the book really great. Too many poly clay books focus on cute little figures that really have no use -- Sue Heaser's book shows you how to make things that you can USE. The directions are clear, and the ideas excellent. I am currently trolling for old lamp to turn into my own clay lampshade! I liked this book so much that I have ordered her other book, Polymer Clay Techniques.
Creative new ideas with polymer clay.......2001-12-24
This is my ninth book on polymer clay. I purchased it to get ideas to expand on what I already knew and it did just that. This book is full of new ideas I haven't been introduced to in any other book to date. The projects are well thought out and easy to follow.
I wouldn't necessarily recommend this book to be your first if you have not yet worked with this medium. However, if you are even the slightest bit experienced with polymer clay and want to find new ideas and get a new perspective, I highly recommend it!

Book Description
This monograph represents a critical juncture in Thomas studies since it dispels the belief that the Gospel of Thomas originates from gnostic traditions. Rather, Jewish mystical and Hermetic origins are proposed and examined. Following this analysis, the anthropogony and soteriology of Thomas are discussed. The Thomasites taught that they were the elect children of the Father, originating from the Light. The human, however, became unworthy of these luminous beginnings and was separated from the divine when Adam sinned. Now he must purify himself by leading an encratite lifestyle. He is to ascend into heaven, seeking a visio dei which will transform him into his original immortal state and grant him citizenship in the Kingdom.
Customer Reviews:
The most significant recent study of the Gospel of Thomas.......1999-11-06
This study, by a student and collaborator of Jarl Fossum, is the most significant contribution to the study of the Gospel of Thomas in the last decade because it locates its distinctive vocabulary and themes in an identifiable historical and communal context: the practice of heavenly ascent in the early Jewish Christian ascetic communities of Syria (in this instance, encratite communities). Building on the work of Gilles Quispel and others, the author identitfies the Thomas sayings material which refer to the preparation for, the ascent journey as a passage through angelic gates, and the vision of the Divine Glory or Anthropos. The parallels in vocabulary, ritual structure, and forms of visionary experience to Hermetic and Hekhaloth literature are carefully described. The distinctive theme of ascent to the Divine Glory as a salvific event is explored. This study is a valuable contribution to recent studies of the practice of heavenly ascent in early Christianity, e.g., J. Knight on the Ascension of Isaiah pseudegraph, and J. Baumgarten's study of the Book of Elkasai, to earlier studies of ascent and visonary experiences among Gnostic groups, e.g., Nag Hammadi Apocalypses of James, and recent work on the heavenly ascent in Hekhaloth literature, e.g., N. Deutsch and C. Morray-Jones.

A Chat With Trader.......1998-06-23
This slightly disjointed and often (historically) innaccurate book would fail if not for Bergeron's legendary personality -- you forgive all because of his mighty chutzpah. He tells great stories, individually, but it doesn't hold as a cohesive piece. Even so, true fans will forgive him -- it's not what he does, it's the way that he does it. Many good recipes included, with tales of the dishes.

48-page staple-bound pamphlet of Phil Frank's 1970 college cartoons. Size is 8 1/2" X 5 1/2", weight is 3 oz. Frank was first nationally syndicated in the fall of 1969, did graphics for the Smothers Brothers TV show and the artwork for the 'Pat Paulsen for President' campaign. The cartoons demonstrate a close understanding of the college experience of the late 1960's/early 1970's, and thus provide both a valuable research tool and a delightful trip down memory lane.

Information is out of date.......2006-01-25
If you are a parent-to-be researching the question of circumcision, I do not recommend this book. It does not include current health information or recent research studies. The AAP does not recommend circumcision for any medical reason, and newborns have been found to feel more pain than adults.
This book's authors are also sadly misinformed about care of the intact penis. To care for the penis of your uncircumcised son, here's all you need to know: Leave it alone. You should never try to retract the foreskin as it is fused to the glans. He will retract it himself when it is ready, and then a swish in the tub or quick rinse in the shower is enough to stay clean.
The best advice for an intact baby boy is to clean the penis as if it were a finger. Much easier than caring for the open wound of circumcision.
Anti-circ brigade at work with virulent negativism.......2005-08-08
Amazing how the many---"A Reader"-- report on Weiss & Harter's Circumcision book! Most are anonymous "anti-circx" spewing inconsistencies, illogical and obviously unread with unknowledgeable statements concerning the factual and scientific writings of a seasoned surgeon and outstanding journalist co-author. A July 2005 headlined article in The Wall Street Journal has finally disclosed the scientific fact that "Study Says Circumcision Reduces AIDS Risk by 70%". Furthermore, recent research has only added to the century old dictum that neonatal circumcision is a proven secular prophylactic health measure that promotes and maintains quality genital health for males of all ages! The small book "Circumcsion: Frankly Speaking" gives basic scientific facts for those interested in the subject. Really, a MUST read.
One would expect much more from a distinguished physician........2004-10-01
This book is a laugh, if for no other reason than the large number of grammatical and lexical errors that the author never bothered to fix. If he were really serious about this subject, he would have included some documented data backed by footnotes, and would have applied some basic statistical methods to defend the position that he is attempting to stake out. As an example, in the section on cowboy circumcisions, (inspired by what he humorously calls "western literature") he suggests that requests for circumcisions from adult patients suffering foreskin-related problems was a widespread phenomenon in the days before infant circumcision became routine. Unfortunately, data concerning the incidence of foreskin-related problems (in a period he erroneously calls the "18th century") are not presented. The author says that circumcision as a preventative measure can be justified on economic grounds alone, claiming that, for an adult patient suffering foreskin problems requiring costly treatment, neonatal circumcision would have been for him a far less expensive treatment. Unfortunately, this economic argument carries absolutely no weight without quantifying the incidence of foreskin-related problems for uncircumcised adults in the 21st century. Without this latter datum, a comparison of costs simply cannot be made.
Should we American males be glad that we were circumcised in infancy? or should we consider ourselves victims of a tribal ritual of genital alteration? For those who are looking for an erudite, well-argued treatment of this subject matter, the recent book by David Gollaher is a good place to start. At present, scholarly works on this topic have come almost entirely from the anti-circumcision camp. As for the present text, some undergraduate-level coursework in the fields of statistics and English composition would put the author in a much stronger position to argue his case. As it stands, this text is not to be believed.
What a price to pay for rant and agenda.......2002-11-02
I have read Weiss's little pro-circumcision book and found it laugable. Is he going senile, is he carrying a secret cultural agend, does he actually think anyone of right mind would pay 50 dollars for this work of ego and bias.
I'm sure he and his dear, albeit diminishing pro-circ supporters find it difficult to think this ritual mutilation in non Moslem/Jewish society is decreasing. Anyone who has actually seen a circumcision and has had their eyes open, can not think of this as anything other the child abuse most dire.
If the " good " doctor has done many of these sexual mutilations premptively one could only hope he can sell enough of this none sense to pay his lawyer, when his victims decide to sue him.
Speaking on behalf of professional butchers.......2002-04-18
...Disinformation about circumcision has been put out on the American public for at least a century. The author only contributes more of the same by using outdated studies.....Harter also fails to acknowledge that such a traumatising procedure(performed without anesthesia)may have long-term psychological consequences. All in all a terrible waste of a book.
