Absolute Rubbish.......2007-01-29
I've read and enjoyed other works by Baker (The Fermata, Vox), but this collection of magazine articles is absolute rubbish. Random musings on arcane topics such as fingernail clippers, cinema projectors and model airplanes not only fail to entertain, they appear to have no redeeming value whatsoever.
Baker is without question a talented writer, but this collection aptly demonstrates that even the best author needs adequate subject matter with which to work. I'm stunned at just how bad this collection actually is. The first time I've ever awarded a one star rating.
Lumber!.......2006-04-18
This is a brilliant book. It consists of several short essays on varied subjects; fingernail clippers, a review of a slang dictionary, and the demise of card catalogues to name a few, and one long essay on the history and usage of the word 'lumber'.
Nicholson is a master of finding the sublime in the mundane and his essays bring into focus the understated beauty of everyday objects. Eccentric and and at times almost comically over-erudite? Sure, but you'll find yourself nodding in silent recognition at his apt descriptions of the minutiae of daily life.
Puny Thoughts.......2004-06-30
The world is full of whiners, and this guy is the king. As a pup, Nicholson Baker attended the School Without Walls where, "learning has no limit." Unfortunately for us, the only message he got resulted in his permanent low self-image.
If you purchase ANY of this poor misbegotten soul's books, you are doing nothing more than feeding the mouth of a permanent pessimist.

Books, wood, lumber, libraries.......2004-04-19
Which brings us to the book of the month: The Size of Thoughts: Essays and Other Lumber by Nicholson Baker. With all this travel and displacement, I didn't read that much in the past month except for a few scant pages of this or that book, or leafing though New York Girls, or the Doris Kloster book, or flipping through pages of The Complete Reprint of John Willie's Bizarre. Baker's book was sort of a meditative book after enjoying the "over the top" quality of a Kern or a Kloster. Baker is a very intelligent man as an essayist and this sober and funny book reminds me of the thoughtfulness of his previous novels, The Mezzanine or The Fermata.
In fact, Nicholson Baker has been assaulted once or twice in the past by a reviewer or two for being a minor pornographer on the last two novelistic outings, and I guess that he is now asking for our forgiveness. He portrays himself here as a regular guy, with a great interest in the most minute particles. The careful essays are about simple things: changing your mind as opposed to making decisions, the size and shape of thoughts, and rarity in life and experience. Baker is also a physical guy and likes his hands on the machinery, so he devotes a word or two about typewriters, model airplanes, clipping your nails, and the movie projectionist.
He is a severe literary critic (refer to U and I), and Baker here elaborates his views on the literary profession which include the art of reading aloud, the history of punctuation, thoughts about Alan Hollinghurst and J. E. Lighter's The Historical Dictionary of American Slang. Things read at weddings, typos, a recipe, dewey decimal system, and books as furniture are thrown in the shuffle; glue keeps it all together. And finally a long essay about the history of lumber, where he comes out in favor of lumber, is his most strongly political. I say that I love lumber! Ever since I was hit on the head by a two by four as a child.

"So what size are they?" I heard a voice asking. Blinking in the Queensland sunshine I looked up from my book and smiled when I realised what my questioner meant. "There's only one way to answer that question" I said, and proceeded to read the opening paragraph of the book aloud, while my questioner listened, spellbound.
Back in rainy Britain I'd woken up with a dry mouth and aching head after one of my farewell parties in a friends house. Desperate for something to read I spied this book upon a shelf. Attracted by the tasteless pink and orange cover adorning this particular edition I picked it up and immediately disappeared, enthralled, into the lumber-room of someone else's mind. This charming book is filled with some of the irrelevant bits and pieces that somehow sneak into our brains. We turn them over from time to time, pulling them out of our subconscious like a paper covered boiled sweet from a fluff-filled pocket.
The author leads you down the byways and alleys of his thought processes, challenging and amusing you by turn and always asking questions that you wish you had thought of. This gentle philosophical meandering leads you to look at your surroundings with fresh eyes and broadens your horizons because you suddenly understand how at least one other human being thinks. It's a charming book to suit a wistful mood, a beach, a cloud, a river. Pack it in your holiday suitcase and wander gently through it at a holiday pace when the mood takes you. You won't be disappointed.

This is book one of Dave Duncan's 4-book, "A Man of His Word", series. Mr. Duncan does a wonderful job with all four books, and I enjoy rereading them from time to time. I especially enjoy the many situations in which the characters often escape "just in the nick of time". A note of caution though, Don't read the sequel series, "A Handful of Men". It is horrible!
Spellbinding start to a marvellous series.......2006-11-07
This is the first volume in the first of two marvellous fantasy quartets.
The first series, "A man of his word" has titles taken from Keats' "Ode to a nightingale" and the titles perfectly match the themes of the books.
The lines which inspired the titles are as follows -

All eight books are set in a world of Gods and Sorcerers, where magic abilities are conferred by the knowledge of words of power. The descriptions of magic powers and how they work are far more effectively and consistently thought through than in the typical fantasy novel, and as the hero and heroine travel through a strange and diverse world a picture both of that world and the serious threat which it faces gradualy takes shape.
The Magic casement opens in the sleepy town of Krasnegar, where Inos is the only daughter of King Holindarn. Her best friend is the stableboy, rap. A divine apparition warns her to "Seek the Good" and adds "If you do not trust in love, all will be lost."
Initially this message is taken as meaning that Inos must marry, and her father sends her to the Imperial capital to learn how to be a lady. But this is only the start of her travels, and strange adventures, throughout a strange, beautiful, and dangerous world.
The original paperback editions of the "A man of his word" quartet had beautiful covers painted by Don Maitz, and the books would almost have been worth buying for these covers if they had not also comprised a beautiful story.
Read this till it fell apart.......2005-09-18
I loved this series so much. It plays with the usual fantasy cast, but they are very sincerely and beautifully developed. You have your honest young stable boy (not very good-looking, just to shatter one classic fantasy role a little) who is bent on following his childhood friend Princess Inosolan all over the world if need be to help her regain her kingdom. This all takes place in a rich, well-developed world with interesting races based on historical places in our own world. Like the imps, dark-complected people with an interest in empire-building and a very well-organized Romanesque military. The story is exciting, with great twists and interesting developments. The system of magic is unique, and I adored all the characters.
I have all the books in this series and the sequel series, A Handful of Men, and I have read the first four until the pages are starting to fall out of the book. I think it is a true gem among some of the typical fantasy that's out there and I hope to spread the word about it!
Beginning of an all-time favorite series.......2005-07-09
This book begins the "A Man of His Word" series, which is among my all-time favorite fantasy reads. This series got me interested in Dave Duncan's other books (King's Blades, etc.), many of which are good but none quite match this series. If you're a fan of authors like David Eddings or Anne McAffrey, I highly recommend this book.
Poorly Printed - Hard to Read!.......2005-06-11
I was really looking forward to the book my husband got me. He really loved this series years ago and wanted to share it with me. But the printing quality is so terrible that I find it hard to read. The type characters look like they are pinted on a 15-yr old, poor resolution dot-matrix printer. I'm shocked that a publisher would put out such poor quality and I am truly disappointed in my copy. I will read this, but unless the story is enthralling, I won't be purchasing the rest of the series.

This book delivers what it title implies. After a description of the basics you will need for making Italian food, it takes you through recipes by main ingredient.
The food is basic, the recipes are not too complicated, and the ingredients are easy to find in any standard store. My only complaint, albeit minor, is that the instructions are a little too detailed at times. This gets in the way once you figure out what they mean in the description, but ensure that your meal comes together at the same time.

Is there a better guidebook for Jeep lovers? I don't think so. He's got every model, every option, every color and accessory and everything here, all the way back to the Willys and military days.
Be aware that there's a new version out there with a new cover...all the same info, plus MORE! Even if you already own the older version, pick up the new one. More photos, updated info, pricing, etc.

It's 20 below outside and the snow is drifted over the door to the garage I can't get to where my jeep is stored. I'm going through Jeep withdrawal. The mail comes and I'm saved. "Jeep" By Jim Allen has arrived in the mail. Filled with the beautiful photos and expert discussion of the history and details that makes my Jeep more than just transportation. This book is for every jeep junkie. Even without Jim's expert commentary on the breed this book would be worth buying just for the high quality photos and collected documentation. If you haven't already added this book to your growing Jim Allen collection you're missing out.

Noted Jeep scholar and photographer, Jim Allen, has assembled a lavish, detailed, and engaging story. Being a longtime student of the brand, Allen has amassed a wealth of previously unseen historic images which he uses in support of beautiful images of perfectly restored models. Readers will recognize a number of Military Vehicle Preservation Association National Convention winners as well as some of the rarest examples of both civilian and military models in private collections.
Allen has divided his research into 10 chapters, eight of which follow a chronological sequence of the marque. Chapter Nine deviates from this timeline to ask the question, "Will the real Jeep please stand up?" What might be a sidebar in most books, this chapter explores the etymology of the word "Jeep," expelling some myths while explaining others.
The final chapter of the book, like the Statham title, is dedicated to the "Jeep Lifestyle." Unlike the other book though, the author looks beyond the rock climbers, giving note to reenactors, collectors, and restorers. The book concludes with a nice glossary of the Jeep "Alphabet". Three appendices are included, the most useful of which is a detailed list of specifications for all models, beginning with the Bantam BRC-40 and ending with the Cherokee XJ and and Grand Cherokee ZJ of 1999.
Engaging text, fresh research, and frame-quality photography make this book a bargain at... A Jeep library will be incomplete if this book isn't added to the shelf. It is too bad there isn't an award for "Outstanding Publication in the Field of Jeep History." This book would receive my nomination.
It's a buyer's guide, not a picture book.......2001-12-08
This is an excellent data book (Just like all the other vehicle "Buyers Guide" books) on a wide variety of Jeep vehicles with much detail data such as built numbers and option lists. It's more a "documentary" piece than a "color and story" book. Excellent for people hunting for Jeep facts on a wide variety of Jeeps and for people trying to decide what vintage Jeep to buy or restore.

I have about ten different Jeep books and this one is one of my very favorites. Nice layout, easy to read and good information combined with excellent pictures make this a perfect book for someone interested in the legacy of Jeep vehicles without getting too deep (and maybe boring) into detailed data. Recommended for the Jeep rookie.....

Invaluable Introduction to a Catholic Magician.......2005-04-30
I love this book. It is precious to me and performs a true service. Not only is it the only in-print book in English on its subject, it really is an admirable effort. And although MacIntosh's out of print title has more information about Levi's life, I prefer Williams' effort. Quantity is not the same as quality, and although less is on offer here, I feel Williams captures more of the essential heart of who the remarkable Eliphas Levi really was. (Not that MacIntosh's volume is not also excellent and deserves reprinting).
Who was Eliphas Levi? I echo Williams completely, when he writes as to his reasons for writing the book: `The more I found out [about Levi], the more interested I became. Levi emerged as a far richer personality than I would ever have suspected.' I concur - the more I've pursued Levi, the more I've found a very generous and noble heart, a very human thinker.
Williams' takes us through Levi's whole life: his life changing first communion, his ordination in the Catholic Church, his years of radical utopianism, his veneration of the feminine, his works on magic. Unfortunately, the information on Levi's last years is thinner - which is regrettable inasmuch as I find the mature Levi the most moving of all - as he leaves behind his ceremonial magic for an ever deeper engagement with the Catholic Mystery. But it's a minor regret. Again, Williams captures Levi's *heart*.
Levi deserves not to be forgotten. As I said in my review of The Key of the Mysteries: `Levi is also notable because, although he could be seen as one of the fathers of the New Age movement, he doesn't have a `New Age politics'. That is, one the one hand, many ideas that now inform New Age thinking - such as `the interconnectedness of everything and how you effect others with your energy' to put it in `New Age speak' - are prefigured here in [Levi]. One the other hand, Levi has none of the New Age ideas of rejecting religion and the establishment. He is deeply Catholic and seeks a transformed Church vigorously supporting and informing the established order. Many of the thoughts here seem like rough drafts of what the anonymous author of Meditations on the Tarot would later develop with far more finesse.'
So in addition to all the above reasons, those seeking to understand the background to the astonishing Meditations on the Tarot will also find Williams' book a most valuable resource.

To start off with I was disappointed to find so many typo's in this second edition. While annoying it doesn't spoil the reading experience. The extensive use of long sections of quotation from other sources is far worse. This may not be intended as filler material but it does break the flow with unfortuate regularity. There is much in the way of interesting personal information that is not included. This is not difficult to source as I found it easily at a couple of on-line bio's.
The lack of a definitave biogaphy of Levi is a glaring omission in Occult literature. While this book doesn't fill the void it's the only one available. Worth reading untill the real thing comes along.
