At first blush, Lydia Minatoya's novel The Strangeness of Beauty would seem to be pretty standard fare: three generations of Japanese women struggle to understand and love one another. Sounds like generic women's fiction, but in Minatoya's hands, it becomes something quietly distinctive. Minatoya has a taste for the in-between. In this, her first novel, mothers are not mothers, Americans are Japanese, and warriors are pacifists.

Etsuko and her sister Naomi move with their respective husbands from Kobe to Seattle in the 1920s. When Naomi dies in childbirth, the widowed Etsuko becomes the baby's surrogate mother. The two return to Japan, where the girl, Hanae, can receive the education in subtleties that is her heritage as a member of a samurai family. The young American girl finds the chores and trials of samurai life enraging. "Take sweeping the garden path with a light bamboo broom: the point isn't just to clear off debris. Designed to develop dedication and spiritual depth, the real task is in repeating the activity--morning and dusk, over and over, for decades--until she learns to leave light, flowing impressions on the soft surface earth."

Just as patiently, Etsuko and Hanae must learn the secrets of their family. There's quite a bit of familial breast-beating, sure, but it's leavened by the perspective of Etsuko, a bumbling, sweet-tempered antiheroine of a narrator. The book comes alive as the two women, trapped in the liminal state of exile, neither American nor Japanese, learn to wrest the best from both worlds. As Japan teeters on the brink of war, Etsuko and Hanae apply their samurai-warrior sense of honor to fighting for peace. Minatoya (author of the acclaimed memoir Talking to High Monks in the Snow) never settles for black or white. She always strives for that more difficult place: the gray area. --Claire Dederer

Book Description

From an award-winning author comes a searing tale of three generations of women, Japanese and American, whose strained reunion in Kobe on the brink of World War II challenges the identity, spirit, and capacity for love of each of them.

When Etsuko Sone's sister dies in childbirth in Seattle's shabby Japantown, love for the precocious child catapults Etsuko back across the Pacific and into the austere samurai household of her mysterious mother, Chie -- a woman who rejected Etsuko at birth. The dubious reconciliation is for the sake of little Hanae, that she might learn her Fuji heritage and the Zen lessons of humility, dignity, self-discipline, and grace.

In Japan, Etsuko is the ultimate outsider: a returning emigrant in a land she left years before; a common woman thrust into a house of secrets and riches; a childless mother and a motherless daughter. As Etsuko and Hanae do their often quite comic best to adapt to life within Chie's samurai household, Japan is changing in dangerous ways. Worldwide economic strife strips Japan's people of food and clothing even as wartime preparations strip them of information and freedoms. Chie and Etsuko greet the mounting militarism with resistance, and when the imperial army cuts cruelly into Chinese Manchuria, accusations of treachery, of antipatriotism, begin to rain on the Fuji household. It is then that the women realize their separate independence is their common bond. It is then that Etsuko finds hidden strength to pursue meaning and beauty in a situation beyond her control.

Told with a social scientist's feel for cultural, historical, and familial confusions and a poet's ear and eye, The Strangeness of Beauty is a triumphant love story, a celebration of the capacity for transcendence that exists in every one of us.

4 out of 5 stars Not what I expected, but fascinating.......2003-09-05

The Strangeness of Beauty is an intriguing book. At times, the prose is breathtaking, lightly skimming along the surface of three generations of women (and several men, in passing). At times, it reads like a sociology textbook -- a good one, but cold and impersonal. Characters are given to standing up and giving declarative speeches about things that have happened to them and their families.

Although the novel is ostensibly a first-person narrative by Etsuko, a woman of the middle generation, she frequently projects herself into the minds of others, sometimes in the first person. Other times, she gives third-person accounts of stories she could not possibly have witnessed. So what is real (in the fictional sense) and what is imagined by the narrator is never truly clear.

So why does the book work so well? Narrator Etsuko's almost compulsive drive to try to understand the rigid characters around her -- so driven that at one point, the narrator falls into a grinning, blank-eyed depression and stops trying to figure her world out altogether. Because she is puzzled, the reader is puzzled, and we are drawn into her search for understanding. As in life, we learn about these characters in little, wave-like spurts, without anyone's story being tied up into a neat bow.

The result is a book that cannot be summarized easily. This is one book that really must be experienced first-hand.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic........2003-01-27

Unbelievable beautiful and influencial. Not much more I can say. Read it, there's no possible way for you to be dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars Skillful exploration of Japnanese/Japanese-American cultures.......2002-10-06

Minatoya, with her amazinng vividness and force, helps readers explore the meaning of being "Japanese" and the rich heritage of the Japanese, Japanese-American and Western cultures. As readers blend Japanese and Western emotions, ideals and failings, they should begin to see the tip of what today has become the Japanese-American identity.

Overall this is a job well done!

4 out of 5 stars A good read.......2002-04-17

Although this book isn't so exciting that you'll stay up late finishing it, it has a nice flow and tug that just pulls you deeper and deeper into the story. It explains aspects of the Japanese culture that foreigners (particularly Americans) are completely cluess about. It also presents enough ideas that stimulate the brain so that you keep pondering some of the issues days, even weeks, after reading the last page.

The weakness of the book, however, is the character development. The main character, Etsuko, is an exception to this and towards the end of the book Chie develops more as well. But the character from the 3rd generation, Hanae, could be explored so much more than she is that the reader is left with some major questions about her motivations and dreams. The same is true of some other characters, more minor but still important to the story.

Despite this fault the book is a good read and I would recommend it.

well to tell you guys the truth. im not really into reading but this book by lydia made me want to read. the interesting thing about the book that i thought was how she related to seattle. since im not really from seattle i thought it would be interesting to find out some things about it. also i liked the way she made her characters do so many things in such a small time period. Today i got the pleasure of meeting her in my English 101 class. She is a very briliant and interesting person she had many fasinating things to talk about. The only thing that i want is for her to write some sort of a sequal. Because noone really knows what exactly happens to any of the charaters after the story has ended. But i really enjoyed this book and i recomend this "I story" to anyone who likes to read. Even if you dont enjoy reading you will like this wonderful novel. Plus she is a wonderful woman...AND I GOT MY BOOK SIGNED:)

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need to howl in the Dark Ages.......2003-03-09

This is an expanded edition of the original Dark Ages Werewolf book.

First, the book keeps insisting that you need Dark Ages: Vampire to use this book, but any Werewolf book will do.

The book covers in great detail all 10 tribes of Medieval Europe in full detail. All the various gifts are detailed as well.

If you are a VAMPIRE player who always wanted to check out the Werewolves, this is the book for you, as it seems to be written for you. Veteran Werewolf players can skip all the Vampire stuff and find stuff that they will like.

Definitely recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Just Another Crossover.......2001-08-18

I rarely find myself dissatisfied with a product. I'm not this time, but there are a few comments I feel should be made. First and foremost, White Wolf crossovers simply don't work. This book requires you to take Werewolf out of its normal context and place it in a world designed for Vampire.

This is not inherently a problem. Werewolf has certain perks, even in the Dark Ages. But there is no conflict. When White Wolf branches into alternate settings, there is always a unique conflict (such as the Storm Eater in Wild West). I find that oddly lacking. This book lacks the conflict in the Americas (for obvious reasons), all-powerful Wyrm spawn, and all other potential enemies. In fact, it seems more to me like a hack-and-slash version of a serious game.

What I find most distasteful is that it's a reprint of existing information. It varies only in small areas from the information in Werewolf: the Apocalypse. The Pure Ones are missing and the Glasswalkers have a period-appropriate name. But the Vampire: the Dark Ages covers this information sufficiently.

In the end, all I can say for sure is that this is a good game out of its element. If Werewolves are to be used in the Dark Ages, use them with crossover rules: there are no tribes, they're all Lupines. Keep the games true to themselves, leave them in their own time.

4 out of 5 stars Of Claw and Sword.......2001-05-25

Dare you leave your filthy alleys and rotting cities, toss modernization behind you and visit the era when the wyrm was young and the garou mere legends? True enough, no real roleplayer needs to be told what a broadsword is, and not many would find the entire chronicles of the british islands necessary, but this book conveys an entirely new atmosphere. No longer a fugitive in a losing war and painful memory, the garou in the dark ages are the real monsters - the Bad Wolf of legends, horrors in the long nights. These are the times when a wolf can really be a wolf. However - don't mistake these times to be placid or tranquil - the young (and so far largely unknown)wyrm is growing stronger and bolder, huge monsters of old times stil wonder about, the Burning Times (the garou term for Inquisition) can return at any moment, and the abominable Leeches hold Europe by the throat. And intend to bite. You could say that this book is an interface between Vampire and Werewolf, because the Leeches recieve here a lot of attention - both in articles and in rules, and it is probably very handy reading this book along with Vampire. Being a devoted storyteller of the Apocalypse campaign, and having no vampire rulebook close by, I skipped through much of the Leechy parts, and focused on the wolf point of sight. Herein you would find the viewpoints of each of the Old World tribes along with short articles written on each (and smashing artwork - espeacially the one along the Fenrir and Fianna tribes), whole chapter devoted to history and atmosphere, new skills, gifts, rites and fetishes (sadly no new Totems), and new monsters to entertain the aggressive wolf race. Admittedly, those who know next to nothing about Vampire (like myself) miss a bit of the point, but overall this is a good book to have.

4 out of 5 stars Lacks the System.......2001-05-10

I'm a GM and i've been one for about 8 months, I love Vampire: The dark ages, and this is a must if you want to run a dark ages game. The only problem is you do need Werewolf: The Apocalypse in order to use this book. Either that, or you are familiar with werewolf systems and have certain knowledge on Rolemaster. Still I strongly recommend this book for those who like White Wolf's WoD.

3 out of 5 stars Rating not Applicable.......2000-10-23

Riiiiiiiight. Question: What the hell would be the purpose in buying this? There's absolutely nothing new in the material presented (in fact, there's LESS) and I don't think you really need the help to figure out how to play a game in the dark ages when u can just use the core book and adapt a few things. I suppose it has some nice features like great art and some interesting revisions of history, but is that really worth what you'd be paying for it?

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book that you must buy.......1999-07-31

This book is great. It shows you how a werewolf really is, a creature that stalks in the night without fear because it knows that no one can stand before it. The only thing that fails in the book is that there's only a few new gifts. But the rest of the book is excellent. Sorry for my horrible english

3 out of 5 stars The middle volume in the Jason Marshall trilogy.......2005-10-15

By the time we get to "Guardsman of Gor," the 15th of John Norman's Counter-Earth novels, we are clearly in a transitional period. I did not like the idea that instead of Tarl Cabot we were now telling the story of a different Earth man who ends up on Gor, although the Jason Marshall trilogy was more interesting to me than the story of Judy Thornton, a woman brought to Gor as a captive in "Slave Girl of Gor." In the first volume of the trilogy, "Fighting Slave of Gor," Marshall ends up on Gor when he tries to save Beverly Henderson from a Gorean slave trap. The next thing the civilized Earth man knows he is a slave on Gor. Starting out as the silk slave of the Lady Florence of Vonda, Marshall then becomes a Gorean gladiator, which gives him the opportunity to become free so that he can find Beverly, who now also a slave on Gor.

"Rogue of Gor" is the middle volume in the trilogy and the novel and has Marshall searching for Beverly. But since this is a trilogy you know that he is not going to find her until the final volume, "Guardsman of Gor." Instead, Marshall travels along the River Vosk to the port city of Victoria, north of Port Kar, and finds himself in the middle of a war between Glorious Ar and the Salerian Confederation as the pirate fleet seeks to control the waterways of Gor on which the cities are so dependent. In terms of providing more action than sex, this is the one volume of the trilogy that delivers on that score and if you are waiting for Jason and Beverly to consummate their relationship in Gorean terms you have the last half of the next novel for all of that to play out (after a giant naval battle). In this one he finds her on the slaver's block, buys her, and sets her free even though she insists she is a true slave and therefore does not desire freedom.

There is a sense in which Norman is trying to get back to the basics, since the fight between Ar and the Salerian Confederation is not, at face value, part of the gigantic struggle between the Priest-Kings and the Kurii. But the sexual philosophy of Gor is now becoming the dominant theme of Norman's stories. The back of the original paperback declares, "Jason Marshall learned the meaning of manhood and the power of women, both dominant and submissive" on Gor, but clearly he has yet to fully accept his role in this society. This time around Norman is educating a male rather than a female, which is usually the case in the Gor novels, and I think that you have to take such instruction at face value.

The obvious assumption might be that most men would not need to be persuaded to live a life being a master, but when you consider the discussion that Jason and Beverly were having at the start of the trilogy before they ended up on Gor you have to admit that it is not exactly the sort of lifestyle to which a "civilized" man would aspire. Clearly Norman is arguing men have to be carefully taught such beliefs almost as much as women, although you will never convince me the male of the species would require as much persuasion. Consequently, whether you judge "Rogue of Gor" by the standard of either the best Gor adventures ("Nomads of Gor" and "Assassins of Gor") or the main testaments of Gorean sexuality ("Slave Girl of Gor," "Kajira of Gor," and "Dancing Girl of Gor"), it falls short. For the most part only true believers are going to proceed beyond this trilogy to complete the series.

2 out of 5 stars Schmuck of Gor.......2001-08-14

Rogue of Gor is the 2nd volume in the Jason Marshall trilogy. This one finds him searching for his long lost love, Miss Beverly Henderson. The trail leads him to Victoria, a town on the Vosk river preyed upon by pirates, where he buys her off of a slaver's block and sets her free despite her protestations that she is a true slave and does not want to be freed. Jason will hear none of it and takes her home to put her on a pedestal and adore her from a distance (which is totally out of character with the way he treats other women including those who, like Beverly, have been abducted from Earth and enslaved). She then proceeds to rebuke and abuse him at every opportunity. Funny thing, every time Jason acts like an idiot it gives John Norman an excuse to launch into yet another tirade espousing his views on the domination of females. Amazing coincidence, that! It seems that no one on Gor has sex without it being preceded by, interspersed with, and followed by lengthy discussions of Mr. Norman's philosophy. These digressions from the story are repetitive, tedious, and boring, boring, boring. If they were cut out, this trilogy would easily fit into 2 volumes. I don't know where the title of this book came from as there is certainly nothing roguish about Jason Marshall. The title to this review seems more appropriate (but, of course, would not sell as many books). Another hundred pages or so and Jason finally wises up. The book then gets more interesting as Jason devises a plan to deal with the river pirates and convinces the forces of Port Cos and Ar's Station to join in (their war with each other having conveniently fizzled out). Be forewarned: Those who like their trilogy segments to at least partially resolve the issues in the volume will be sorely disappointed....

4 out of 5 stars Holiday Cooking Everyday with Mary!.......2006-05-28

I am a huge fan of Mary Engelbreit, and have a love for innovative, fun cookbooks. This book was a perfect combination of fun food and colorful, Engelbreit illustrations.

The recipes in the book are divided into 5 categories. They include: Appetizers, Soups & Salads, Main Courses, Vegetables and Side Dishes, and Desserts and Beverages. Included for most recipes is a beautiful, full page, color photograph along with a serving dish idea. The only 2 things missing in this addition are a spiral binding (although the book lays flatter than most hardcover cookbooks), and nutrient information for each recipe.

Some of my family's favorites include: Walnut & Port Cheddar Spread, Rosy Applesauce with Crispy Latkes, Tomato & Rice Shrimp Bisque, Traditional Holiday Seafood Salad, Brine Roasted Turkey, Mediterranean Filet Mignon, Rosemary-Rubbed Roasted Ham, Ginger-Sautéed Baby Carrots, Maple-Glazed Sweet Potatoes, and Sugar-Dusted Sweet Apple Fritters.

                          Enjoy!

Wreaths and garlands take floral decorations out of the vase and into large-scale special-occasion decorating. Fresh and dried florals, greens, fruits, herbs, and other natural materials can be transformed into wall, door, tabletop, and mantel decor to welcome guests, mark a change of season, utilize a bountiful harvest, celebrate a holiday, or just brighten up a room. Hundreds of color photographs and step-by-step directions for well over a hundred projects fill this vast volume, along with a good introduction to materials, equipment, and techniques. A circlet of fresh flowers surrounds a bowl of floating candles; a swag of seashells and grasses graces a window; a ring of mosses and dried fungi commemorates a country stroll; lovely floral wreaths mark Valentine's Day, Easter, and Mother's Day. And of course there are Christmas decorations: a lush bay leaf and dried orange mantelpiece swag; a gold-flecked Yuletide kissing wreath; a lovely Advent candle ring. Complexity ranges from beginner to advanced--from novice wreath maker to expert, there's something here for everyone. --Amy Handy

Absolutely lovely book- I've read as many wreath and garland books as I can get my hands on, and this book is superior to most. The quality of the photos and instructions, as well as the great variety of projects, materials, and quantities (of materials) used, contribute to the beauty of this book. I love their many ideas for roses, especially, and lavendar. Great book.
