Book Description

"Our dream, our obsession, was to own a tram. This all started with an advertisement which showed a picture of a London tram with the words: 'Trams surplus to the requirements of the London Omnibus and Tramcar company for sale at their depot at Acton, London for £2 each.' I doubt if there was a day afterwards when the tram did not enter our conversation..."

The year was 1937, and Hitler had just walked into Austria. It was also a marvelous year for clouded yellow butterflies.

Wilfred and Duncan live in a big old house in Sussex, England. They spend their days catching butterflies and dreaming of escape, and only ever see their parents on Wednesdays for lunch. When their mother elopes and their already distant father takes up with other ladies, they decide that enough is enough. And they have a plan: they will leave home, go to London, and buy a tram, decommissioned by the bus and tram company, that they have seen advertised in the paper for two pounds sterling. Soon the brothers find that their adventures have begun in earnest-as they become proprietors of an old-fashioned horse-drawn tram service, then local celebrities whose tram advertises for a seaside merchant, and finally such heroes of the war effort that they receive a visit from royalty.

Destined to become a new family classic, The Two-Pound Tram is a bittersweet testament to youth and its triumph over hardship.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful story........2007-07-17

What a lovely heartfelt story of childhood and innocence.
I could not put this little gem down until I had finished it.
It's a joy to read a truly believable story of adventure, chasing a dream,
and reaching it. Do not read this book without a box of tissues handy!
Truly beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars A Perfect Little Gem.......2005-03-16

This wonderfully understated book begs for a cover-to-cover non-stop read. Parental indifference and neglect result in great miracles. Fascinating characters hop on at every bend in the road. The rarest of butterflies flits by and a most dignified dog always takes the front seat. The King and Queen of England drop in and a well-meaning letter from Winston Churchill causes an uproar. Hopefully Mike Leigh has already read "The Two Pound Tram" and is working on obtaining funding for the film. Most memorable!

5 out of 5 stars A captivating novel.......2004-02-22

Wilfred and his brother, Duncan, ignored by their parents, decide to pursue their dream to own a tram. The story starts in 1937 following the brothers' travels to London to buy a horse-drawn tram and then to Canterbury, where they find they have unwittingly but fortuitously attracted passengers from the local bus route. They finally arrive in Worthing where a wealthy Austrian benefactor enables them to buy the horse-less variety of tram, and find themselves caught up at the beginning of the Second World War defending the Sussex coastline in its hour of need from their tram-cum-lighthouse. Written without sentimentality, it is funny, moving and captivating.

3 out of 5 stars Better than book two, still not as good as book one........2006-12-14

John Passarella, Wither's Legacy (Pocket, 2004)

The good news: Wither's Legacy is a much better book than Wither's Rain. John Passarella has learned from some of his mistakes. The bad news: Joseph Gangemi has still not returned to the fold, and John Passarella's work on its own is still nowhere near as strong as the work they produced in collaboration.

After the events that concluded Wither's Rain, Wendy left Windale, and the group of friends fragmented, with Hannah on the west coast and Alex back in Minnesota. Wendy wandered around for a while, and when this novel opens, she, too, is well out west, where a subconscious mental trigger left by Wither before her death is released by Wendy, and it wakes up something very nasty with one command: kill Wendy Ward. Needless to say, the gang gets back together, piles into the Mystery Machine... oh, wait. Wrong review.

As with Wither's Rain, it's pretty obvious that, in this partnership, Gangemi was responsible for the characterization and atmosphere and Passarella worked the plot angle. Once again, the plot is solid, but that's about all there is to the novel. Passarella has, however, dropped the annoying gratuitousness of Wither's Rain and keeps things relatively simple here.

It's not a terrible novel, but the series which started off with so much potential is nothing more than a shadow of its former self. Joseph Gangemi, phone home. ** ½

    5 out of 5 stars A curse with teeth.......2006-09-18

John Passarella's WITHER (which was co-authored with Joe Gangemi; hence, the pen name J. G. Passarella), WITHER'S RAIN, and WITHER'S LEGACY are three novels in a terrifically entertaining occult fantasy series about a modern-day young Wicca woman named Wendy Ward, who runs afoul of an evil sorceress from the colonial past, named Elizabeth Wither. With a nod to Nathaniel Hawthorne, John Passarella tells a tale about witchcraft that conjures up Cotton Mather's (MALLEUS MALEFICARUM) version of the ancient pagan craft more than it does Wicca (we all know what happened to women accused of consorting with the devil; but the irony here is that witches never did and still do not believe in the devil. It is difficult to worship something you do not believe in). This being said, the novels are fun to read, with Wendy as the good witch, and Elizabeth Wither as the evil one (practitioners of Wicca might also argue that there is no such thing as either a good witch or an evil witch, just a woman having a bad hair day. However, for the sake of storytelling, fantasists are free to play god with their characters and bend the plot to suit their worlds; and it is fortunate for us readers of fantasy fiction that they do).

Elizabeth Wither and her two sisters-in-the-craft, Rebecca Cole and Sarah Hutchins, are three of the ugliest and wickedest demons to wander the pages of fiction in a long while, especially the powerful Wither. This is one demon you do not want to meet on a lonely bridge at midnight, although some of the unfortunate characters in these novels manage to do just that, and do not live to tell about it. It is Wendy Ward, however, who catches Wither's dreadful attention more than the others do; and because Wendy is a practitioner of Wicca, and a very gifted one at that, it is up to her alone to lay Wither and her minions to rest, once-and-for-all. Wither is a powerful demon, though, who does not take well to being laid asunder. In all three novels she returns in some form or another to wreak vengeful havoc on Wendy and her loved ones.

I highly recommend these novels to readers who enjoy supernatural fantasy that features witches, werewolves, crones, and even a wendigo; but I must forewarn, the books do contain some graphic depictions of sex, and colorful language, which might be unsuitable for the very young.

5 out of 5 stars Get yourself ready..........2005-09-05

Call in sick to work, take the phone off the hook and take a seat for a super thrill-ride of a novel. John Passarella is a writer to watch! All three Wendy Ward novels will not disappoint!

    5 out of 5 stars A blockbuster of a novel.......2004-11-26

After destroying Elizabeth Wither for a second time, supernaturally gifted teenager Wendy Ward finally believed this would be the last she would see of the ex-coven leader. She was right. But although she may have destroyed Wither physically, her legacy still continues in a bitter curse she placed upon Wendy in her final dying moments. A curse that has awoken a carnivorous yellowed eyed, seven foot beast that will stop at nothing until it tastes her sweet flesh between it ravenous fangs ...

Bram Stoker Award-winner John Passarella has done it again with his latest novel, 'Wither's Legacy', the third (and possibly final) chilling part to the critically-acclaimed Wendy Ward series.

Passarella has already proven himself a gifted storyteller with `Wither' and `Wither's Rain', and `Wither's Legacy' is no exception. His plotting, dialogue, and attention to detail are as accurate as ever, drawing the reader in for more after every page. You also can't help but feel that the author's understanding of his characters is as strong as ever, but that still doesn't stop him from killing who he wants, and when.

For a chilling read this winter (or any time), 'Wither's Legacy' comes as highly recommended as you can get. A fine choice for any bookshelf.

5 out of 5 stars Wendy does it again!.......2004-10-24

Wendy is back an her powers are growing! John Passarella continues the saga of Wendy Ward in this well written and fast paced sequel. I couldn't put the book down!!!

5 out of 5 stars Completes the story of Kaththea, Kemoc, and Kyllan Tregarth.......2004-01-24

Kaththea Tregarth, born one of three triplets, could link telepathically with her birth-brothers, Kyllan and Kemoc. At an early age, she was forcibly separated from her brothers and taken to the Place of Silence to be trained in magic by the Wise Women of Estcarp.

In "Three Against the Witch World" (1965), the triplets escape from witch-ruled Estcarp to the magical land of Escore. There, they accidentally destroy the false peace that had long abided between the great powers of Light and Dark. "Things awoke and gathered, and the land was troubled..." and the three learn that they must fight with the forces of Light, or be utterly annihilated by the Dark.

Unfortunately, in "Warlock of the Witch World" (1967), Kaththea is wooed by the fair-seeming Dinzil, who is actually a creature of the Great Dark Ones. She who was once a powerful witch is rescued by her brother, Kemoc, but because of her near-alliance with the Dark, she is stripped of her magic. No longer can she communicate mind-to-mind with her brothers, nor perform the simplest spell of healing.

A witch without her magic is a very dangerous thing to be in Escore: a vessel waiting to be filled by the Dark. In "Sorceress of the Witch World" (1968), Kaththea attempts to return over-mountain to Estcarp to seek help from the witches, but she is caught in an avalanche and then captured by a tribe of nomadic hunters.

Andre Norton is a scholar of Amerindian history and lore, and has incorporated her knowledge in many of her novels, e.g. "Sioux Spacemen" (1960), and "The Beast Master" (1959). The dog-sleds and temporary dwellings of the Vupsall, the people who capture Kaththea, are yet another example of Norton's borrowings from history and anthropology, although this particular Escorian tribe also works metal (maybe a touch of Finno-Ugric, rather than Amerindian).

At any rate, this author's careful attention to detail will bring to life the dimly-lit interior of Utta, the Wisewoman's tent where Kaththea begins to reacquire the magic that was her birthright.

'Sorceress' completes the very fine trilogy of the adventures of Kemoc, Kyllan, and Kaththea, the three children of Earth-born warrior, Simon Tregarth and his witch-wife, Jaelithe.

5 out of 5 stars The 6th WW novel...and worthy of the title!.......1998-03-10

This series has got to be one of the most enduring ever written. It is constantly growing and changing with each new addition to it. If you haven't read any of Nortons work and love si-fi/fantasy you will never be disappionted here! The story of Kaththea is a great read. And worth the effort to find!

                          Book Description

In Man Walks Into A Pub, Pete Brown takes us on a well-lubricated pub-crawl through the amazing story of beer, from the first sacred sip of ancient Egyptian bouza to the last pint of lager on a Friday night. It's an extraordinary tale of yeast-obsessed monks and teetotal prime ministers; of how pale ale fuelled an Empire and weak bitter won a world war; of exploding breweries, a bear in a yellow nylon jacket and a Canadian bloke who changed the dringking habits of a nation. It's also the story of the rise of the pub from humble origins through an epic, thousand-year struggle to survive misunderstanding, bad government and misguided commerce. The history of beer in Britain is a social history of the nation itself, full of catastrophe, heroism and an awful lot of hangovers.

                              Book Description

Imagine Barbie as a nightclub singer, race-car driver, or presidential candidate. Picture her as a graceful ballet dancer on pointe, as a leather-clad biker babe on the back of a Harley, or as the great film icons-Audrey Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle, Judy Garland as Dorothy, Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra. In Barbie Live she is all of this and more.

Stepping into these delicious roles, Barbie acts out her fabulous dreams and aspirations, adopting a new persona on every page and having the time of her life. In spectacular designer clothing-by Bob Mackie, Vera Wang, Christian Dior, and others-she attends exciting Hollywood events and New York photo shoots. Around the world at such hot spots as St. Bart's, Paris, Malibu, and Martha's Vineyard, Barbie takes us on her quest for fame-as a rock star, as an artist, and ultimately as a movie star. But is fame and fortune all that Barbie dreamed it would be?

Nancy Ellison's gorgeous full-color photography taken expressly for this book is filled with vitality and emotion. Lisa Birnbach provides the voice of Barbie in her fun, playful text. Barbie Live is the ultimate Barbie collector's item for children and adults alike.

                              5 out of 5 stars BARBIE-FASHION ICON.......2001-08-21

Having met the author in Paris in the early nineties I can sincerely say that Billy Boy knows his subject well.He is an expert not only on Barbie but on Bleuette and various other fashion dolls. This book gives a fascinating account of Barbie's itineraries as fashion icon and pop phenomenon. It contains some very interesting photos of Barbie's best outfits from the late 50ies to the late 80ies as well as a great gallery of Barbie portraits dressed by every well known designer. Also, lots of information on Barbie family members.A must.

5 out of 5 stars The book that launched a million Barbie collections........1999-10-23

Although more than a decade old, this book continues to fascinate me. Mattel owes a debt of gratitute to Billy Boy*, whose landmark coffee-table book inspired many, including myself, to start their own Barbie collections. I own three copies of this book, whose narrative is as fascinating as its photos (Twiggy and Malibu Christie are two of my favorite Barbie friends, and are given prominence in this book). The photography also captures the "fun" of Barbie, and are not merely dolls posed in a wire stand. "Great" says it all ...

5 out of 5 stars Billy Boy puts down facts and visuals, all very good!.......1999-03-31

This book about one of the world's greatest doll really emphisises the fasion of Barbie. The photos are absolutly stunning; with shots of the original doll to the French, Italian, Brittish, and American designers to Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Chanel, etc! He covers all the fasions of the time periods, which starts from when she was first debuted to middle 80s, and especially mentions the Haute Couture. The history of Barbie is very good; I think out of all the books I read about her history, this one has the most, and also the most facts about things that you never really knew. It shows alot of things that weren't coresponded to Barbie and her fasions mainly; It has the Bild Lilli and Twiggy dolls (a brief page or two), old comics or books on her, and on a lot of pages, you will see someone who was famous back then, who he thinks the doll had some connection to (i.e., Brigette Bardot, Elizabeth Taylor, Kim Novak, Marilyn Monroe, Bettina, etc.). It covers the Barbies and accsessories, like Flirting Miss Barbie, the twist and turn era, Color Magic Barbie, Talking Barbie, and many of Barbie's pets. A very good book if you are intrested in knowing what actually made barbie famous and knowing her history and fasions.

4 out of 5 stars A tribute from one of Barbie's most ardent admirers........1999-01-19

Most fans know Billy Boy as one of the "original" fashion designers who lent their skills to Barbie couture. Billy Boy was perhaps the most ardent admirer of the 11-1/2" fashion doll, and while his association with Mattel lasted for only two doll releases (1985's Le Nouveau Theatre de la Mode and her followup Feelin' Groovy), his tribute to the Fashion Queen Extraordinaire lives on in this book. If you are looking for a guide to identifying dolls or viewing a complete history of the most popular toy in the world, you'll be disappointed, but if you want a true tribute from one of her biggest fans loaded with pictures of one-of-a-kind dolls from the world's most well-known designers, then this is the book for you.

This book covers very general techniques used in signworks. Screenprinting, hand lettering, and other techniques are covered. Not bad, but if you need deeper knowledge this book won't do it.

Although most of us think we know something about copyright law, few of us know what's fully protected and what's not. For artists, especially those who publish their work on the Web, copyright issues are now more important than ever, and the book to use as a point of reference is Electronic Highway Robbery: An Artist's Guide to Copyrights in the Digital Era. Mary Carter wisely says that you can't stop everyone from downloading your images and copying them, and she points out that in some cases it doesn't matter. She also considers the notions that copyright law is obsolete and that artists should use the Web for giving free samples of their work in order to encourage purchases. She discusses digital watermarking; work for hire; fair use of images, including comment, parody, and criticism; and de minimis doctrine--the idea that copying an insignificant portion of an image is acceptable. This is a fine book for artists who want guidance in following copyright law and in enforcing their own copyrights.

Finally a book on copyright for the web written in right-brain language that a non-lawyer can understand.

The web is the modern day equivilant to the Old Wild West in which images are freely copied, modified and redistributed, all over the world, where they might be seen, and re-used by portentially millions of people. The rights of the individual author and artist are blatantly disregarded, to some extent because of willful disregard for the property of others, but mostly because of ignorance. The notion that the web is for everybody is all the justification some people need to plunder your images.

This book explains our rights and copyrights as artists, designers, and content providers and tells in plain words what we can do to protect ourselves from being the victims of web crimes.

Mary Carter's strength is in her ability to condense large mountains of infomation into small bitesized bits of information.

This book is extremely well written, and unlike most books written by lawyers, it is written with wit and charm.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

                                                    Book Description

A thoroughly entertaining and yet profoundly affecting account of the life of the author's uncle, a respected small-town doctor who, from the 1930s through the 1970s, experienced a wide range of spiritual phenomena: regularly journeying out of body and channeling his spirit guide, George. Through the records and journals of Dr. Riblet B. Hout, or "Rib" as he was known, we are made privy to what he learned about the connection between the healer and the healed, our individual missions on earth, free will, and our relationship with God. He also paints a vivid picture of the afterlife and provides a beautifully graphic first-person account of the actual moment of death, as the soul transitions away from physical life.

A Psychic in the Heartland goes a long way in dispelling our fears about the process of dying and of what happens after death. It also offers history and insight into Spiritualism and the "spiritualist camps" of the day (as Dr. Hout was a frequent visitor and sought-after speaker).

I just loved this book!! Not only was it interesting, but it made me feel like part of their family as I was reading it. Lovely, charming, and amazing. The part when his aunt was dying was incredible, and so touching, but not sad. Well, maybe a good sad. Powerful and sweet book. I don't think you'll be disappointed!

Bettilu Stein Faulkner's writing is not only straightforward and heartfelt, but also cozy and welcoming-magically transporting me to a seemingly simpler time. I can truly say, after finishing this book, that I miss Rib, and his guide, George, for I feel in Riblet...a kindred spirit. Ausgezeichnet, Bettilu! I'm going to have to read A Psychic in the Heartland again and again!"

This book tells a story of a doctor who traveled out of body, saw spirits, and talked to the dead. But this is not why I recommend this book to you. Most of the books on spirit communication preach what you have to believe and how you have to live your life. A Psychic in the Heartland fascinated me because of lack of aggressiveness. Bettilu Faulkner is not on a shepherd who is recruiting sheep to her flock, and she has no intention to turn you into a follower. Bettilu Faulkner's only concern is to relate her story in the best possible way. It results in soulful writing that makes you fall in love with the world of Dr.Riblet B. Hout. You will believe every word you read, and your shattered faith in humanness will be healed. You will enjoy the fine storytelling that has become a rarity in New Age books that are busy selling you concepts of love and forgiveness. The world of "A Psychic in the Heartland" comes from love and soulfulness. This is why I want you to read this book and receive your share of this heart-warming experience.

5 out of 5 stars Psychic in the Heartland........2000-08-14

Amazing reading for those who believe and those who don't believe that this life is just part of a long and wonderful journey. The experiences of "Rib" confirmed for me the belief that there is indeed more to us then the here and now. Written in a sincere and open style, the tone of the book, as well as its content, lends the atmosphere of credibility often sought for by readers of metaphysical publications and those just beginning the journey of inner exploration. Important reading for anyone who has ever wondered "where do we go from here?". Bravo!

                                                    5 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Peek Into a Courageous & Mobile Mind.......2000-07-16

Many human experiences remain unexplained by science, but that does not make them any less legitimate. As a scientist, I found the story of Riblet Hout to be a fascinating exploration of human consciousness and beyond. The book is at once a delightful spiritual journey, a philosophical enticement, and an intellectual mouthful. I enjoyed it tremendously.
