Book Description

Cockroft, a faded composer and socialite, lives in self-imposed exile and fantasizes of true love and extravagant suicides. Rattling around his dilapidated farmhouse in the Italian countryside, his only constant source of company is the ever-loyal Timoleon Vieta, a mongrel with the most beautiful eyes. When a handsome but surly individual arrives on the scene, Cockroft is forced to choose between his dog and this new arrival. He abandons Timoleon outside Rome's Colosseum, where the dog begins the long journey home.
In this acclaimed novel, Dan Rhodes, one of Granta's Best Young British Novelists, has created a tragicomic work of macabre beauty that both amuses and moves in equal measure.

1 out of 5 stars Parents (and buyers)Beware!.......2007-02-20

OK, we get it: man's sudden, devisive cruelty to man(and dog)[If you're moved by this sort of emotional outlook, see the WW II setting movie, "The Victors"]. Proves writer's immaturity by copying a storyline as old as novel writing itself; only in this case it seems to imply an underlying psycho-homosexual conflict. Is the author revealing his inner psyche?- who cares?
This book makes a strong case for movie type "ratings" for books. If we had let our pre-teen kids read this, we feel we would have a strong case against ourselves for child-abuse. Shame on every one of the reviewers for the elite and venerated newspapers who make this "Romance novel" sound as if it were a young child's "rainy-day" reader. (or would that be you, Mr. Publisher, for purposefully taking these blurbs out-of-context?)
Some might call me a "conspiriacy nut", but I can't help deducing the author's sole intent for this book: could it have been to deceive the heterosexual community and extract a unknowing profit for contribution to some Gay organization? Before you Hetero-phobes out there accuse me of Homophobia- I don't care about anyone's sexual habits, especially if I don't even know you. If this aspect of this book were revealed; fine,-NO PROBLEM. In a perfect, non-monetary driven legal system, they would libel for FRAUD!

Suggestion to some of you previous reviewers who agree with me: don't throw this book out; return it to the big "mall" book store, make sure you speak to the manager and demand a refund. If they refuse, tell them you will buy 2 copies on your credit card and then refuse to pay it. When it hits them in the pocketbook, they'll get the message.

5 out of 5 stars Superb parody of... well, you know..........2006-07-20

Dan Rhodes has a habit of writing excellent short books that completely polarise his audience - they either get it or they don't. If you get it, you'll love it. And you'll probably get it if you like your humour dark and your literary forms twisted in surprising ways.

For me this book was surprisingly moving, but I don't think it's for everybody. However, if you look for the good behind all the darkness I think you can see it - this book is an inversion for a reason. Read it and you may see what I mean.

Or not.

This book sucks. It has absolutely no redeeming qualities. The main character is a jerk and is easily manipulated. There is certainly nothing sentimental about the journey. I wish I had never read the thing because it is so disturbing I will have trouble getting it out of my mind.

3 out of 5 stars English spelling!.......2006-01-24

Just so that some of you American reviewers know, those aren't typos - that's English as written by an English writer!

2 out of 5 stars high hopes.......2006-01-22

Mr. Rhodes--chocolate is horrible for dogs; essentially poisonous. Throughout the book, the dog is repeatedly rewarded with chocolate. Why?

I wanted to like this book. The dog was loveable, but his 'master,' Cockroft, was such a despicable character, I nearly put the book down before I was halfway through. Cockrofts sexual escapades and thoughts reflecting his low self esteem take precedence over anything else. Timoleon Vieta's journeys away from his master give the reader glimpses into the lives of others--some of these allowed me to continue reading, hoping for something to tie it all in. But all in all the book left me unfulfilled and irritated with the ending.

Nadya embodies the 19th century idea of the Other: she is a woman, and she is an animal. Comfortable in her skin(s), a child of nature in many ways, she cannot fit into the artificial structure and mores of 19th century America. Although Nadya responds without artifice or duplicity to others (Rufus Jones, Elizabeth Metcalf), the priceless honesty she offers is undervalued and rejected. Nadya's search for a place in which she can safely be herself, woman and wolf, takes her across the plains, deserts, and mountains of western America. Fleeing to the utmost extremity of the continent, she stops and stands her ground on the Oregon shore.

          Book Description

Growing up on the edge of Missouri wilderness in the 1830s, Nadya knew she was not like other girls. But when she became a woman and the change came, she discovered just how different she was. For Nadya was a shapechanger, a werewolf like her mother and father before her....

Nadya is different to all the other stories I have read. It's about an adolescent who ends up alone and she has to travel west.
She's different to all the other girls because she's a werewolf. I recommend it to adolescent children

4 out of 5 stars I Just Wanna Be Me.......2004-03-21

Okay. I won't mince words. This story made me cry. Pat Murphy is a master of character development. She could make you sympathize with an axe murderer. Much more so someone who is merely different, wanting only to be herself, to help others, to fit in, and to live in peace. Nadya is the story of a young wolf-woman, born of parents just like her. They are normal people who, when the full moon rises, Change and spend the dark hours romping and playing in the woods and fields. But many fear the wolf. And what they fear they hate. And what they hate they kill. Nadya hopes otherwise, but when her hope costs her family their lives, her fear and loneliness take her on an adventure across 1830's America.

This is not a young person's story. It's filled with sex and violence, love and hate, and reality.

Pat Murphy eases us into the story. We sympathize with these people as people first. They are wolves only as an afterthought. It's a technique I have seen Ms. Murphy use elsewhere as well. The effect is dazzling. By the end of the story, you identify so strongly with Nadya, your every reaction hangs on her fate.

I do have a few bones to pick. Various descriptions and experineces become redundant. The Change, for example. The first time it was described in detail, I found the description fascinating. By half through, I groaned through the process. By the end, I knew the ritual so well I felt like I could Change myself, and even the two or three short sentences used to describe it then were too much. The sex scenes followed a similar pattern. Nadya's first sexual experience, described in vibrant detail, kept me on the edge of my seat, because of the surrounding circumstances. Her second was more information than I needed to know. The third was boring. By the tenth or twentieth--I lost count--I just felt like wretching. Really, I didn't need that much detail.

My biggest gripe is that there's no epilogue. Yes, there's something at the end called "Epilogue," but that's not what I mean. I mean there's no ending to the story. After the climax and resolution of the story, it cuts off. Not even an "And they lived happily ever after." No closure.

But don't let any of these stop you from reading this book. Go out and beg, borrow, or steal a copy. It'll be worth it.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books.......2004-03-16

I read this novel awhile back and I still think about it today. I loved what the story was about and loved it from beginning to end. I think this is a good book to read for people who like to read about wolves, self-discovery, love, Native Americans, and finding a place to belong.

          3 out of 5 stars A WELL-TOLD TALE.......2003-04-24

I echo the sentiments of those reviewers who enjoyed reading this book. We see Nadya, living in a world of fear, loathing and intolerance for what is deemed unseemly and inexplicable, learning to live and thrive, both as a Woman and as a Wolf. In the process, she finds acceptance in a new life she is able to establish for herself out on the frontier.

The author provides vivid descriptions of the experiences Nadya faced in making the trek westward in the 1840s. You feel yourself being carried across an arid landscape on a rickety wagon and on through the snowy Rockies (facing all kinds of hazards and overcoming them) with Nadya, Elizabeth, and Jenny.

One touching scene in the book is when Nadya as a Wolf (having been spurned earlier in the day by Elizabeth, who has never felt right about her romantic attachment to Nadya) allows herself to be mated with a male Wolf. In that moment, you experience Nadya's joy at that moment of orgasmic release as she howls ecstatically to the skies.

For those readers seeking a werewolf novel full of gore and gratuitous violence, you won't find it here. But if you want to read a well-told tale about the life and experiences of a female werewolf in 19th century America, you've come to the right place.

          5 out of 5 stars lovely!.......2002-08-23

Nadya is a wonderful book. It is the story of a young woman who happens to be a werewolf looking for love and herself. She explores animal/human and woman/man binaries. She approaches love openly, without defining herself as any sexuality. The book is full of wonderful imagery and strong characters such as Dmitri's school-teacher in Russia, to the young, wild girl Jenny, to the Indian chief and the settlers in the home Nadya finally finds. I would recomend this book to ages 14 and up for anyone struggling with who they are and what others would like them to be.

First, I have to say that I haven't purchased a popup book in twelve plus years, and was happy to see Boba Fett's exploits placed in this format. It reminded me of the first time I saw Boba Fett as a kid, and that was a nice, though seldom experienced, sensation. The problem with this piece was that it really didn't have that much content and the price, for eighteen dollars, averages out to a buck fifty a page. Moreover, most of these images have already been displayed in other comic forums. Still, being a popup book, you really can't expect too much from the story (even though I thought Dark Horse might provide a little substance, and I can forgive the redundancy of the images. I liked it, but I'm not so certain I would tell anyone to buy it for the cover cost.

          1 out of 5 stars Appalling.......2000-01-26

I'm sure glad I got this book as a gift, because I don't like thinking that I'd have wasted money on it. UGGHHH!

For 18 bucks, you get 12 pages of horrible art, and a mediocre-at-best cover illustration. This is a depiction Boba Fett ariving in Tatooine orbit with Solo, getting attacked by IG-88, and getting Solo to Jabba. Unfortunately, 95% of the story, dialogue, etc has been cut out. They counted, I guess, on it being "The Pop-Up Comic Book" to make this good. It wasn't. A horrible waste of money and resources.

If I were the rest of you, I wouldn't touch this stinker with a ten-foot cattle prod!

This books provides piercing and engaging analysis. It shows a supurb care to represent the issues/persons/movements it speaks of accurately.

As one who has a fascination with the 60's counterculture, but also sees many of its flaws, this book provides a wonderful basis for dialog and a balanced approach which is ready to stand up against error whether it is in establishment or counterculture garb.

You should see the citations for this book, very in-depth! The wide variety of subjects and concepts that Guinness covers really makes this an interesting read.

Guinness consistently produces great works that are academic but also highly practical. This is not an exception. I highly recommend The Dust of Death.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding in Every Way.......2005-10-07

So as not to be redundant, I will 'second' the prior reviews, all of which are entirely accurate. Furthermore, Os Guinness is an exceptional writer and thinker. "The Dust of Death" is cogent, clear and well written. I have shared copies with people who have a G.E.D. to Ph.D's, and all have remarked of how clearly Guinness expresses his thoughts, and how easy it is to follow his analysis. His insights were valid and accurate when first written and continue to be relevant.

Like Dr. Groothuis, when I first read this book in 1994, I was encouraged to begin developing disciplined habits of mind, eventually going on to graduate school. Typically, I read this text at least once a year.

In summary, this book is an engaging and stimulating read.

                  5 out of 5 stars Really excellent.......2003-06-08

What else could say but excellent? This book charts out a detailedpathway through what was then a very important phenomenon. The reach of the book is immense, covering almost everything from the Black Panthers, to Jack Karouac, to the Grateful Dead, to the spurious Eastern mysticism of the Beatles. While much of the book deals with the temporary cultural material of the sixties, it has some chapters that will surely never age- the one on "violence - crisis or catharsis", which contains a very careful exposition of what the Christian's duty really is in respect to radicalism and the sorts of distress that has plagued the world for a long time.

I am also most enthusiastic about his essay on the occult, which is ever more relevant to an western world increasingly skeptical towards science and determinism.

It would be VERY hard to find a better sourcebook on the way that humanism has changed and emerged into crisis. The pressure points that Guiness identifies have multiplied greatly. What on earth would be written now?

However, there are some missing parts - missing only because of the time the book was written. There has been an increasing sense of perplexity in the very world that Guiness uses as a reference point in some limited sense - that of Berkeley, and similar bastions of the comfortable America where the book is set. Since this book was written we have witnessed the crisis of Watergate, the sickness of political extremism in the west, but more importantly, the transfer of this sickness into the church by a kind of osmosis of consent. I wanted to write about this - there probably is not enough time - but others have been commenting on this for some while.

It's almost certain that the counterculture as Guines describes it here is certainly dead except for some... exceptional... individuals, who embody it in themselves - not a movement, but some last points of life in what is becoming a very arid and dry culture, the culture of war, the culture of destitution, where nearly all the arts are in a state of unparalleled decay.

I find myself often reviewing some of these music items from the past. I am weak - I know that there is no long term destination available in these, as Guiness mentions, these are all subject to the inevitable "wilting" process. But flawed as they are, what some elements of the counterculture gave us was valuable for a while. But there is a better way, thank God, and this is shown at great length in this book, and in others from the L'abri thinkers.

5 out of 5 stars Pivital and profound analysis of the counterculture.......2000-07-25

Os Guinness is one of the most brilliant contemporary Christian social critics in the evangelical camp. This was his first book, originally published in 1973 by InterVarsity Press. Guinness got his intellectual start with the late Francis Schaeffer (apologist, theologian, and social critic, who died in 1984), working for several years in Switzerland at the Schaeffer community called L'Abri (shelter). He has since written many books, such as "The Grave Digger File," "The American Hour," "Fit Bodies, Fat Minds," "Dining With the Devil," "God in the Dark," and "A Time for Truth"--all of which I recommend highly.

This book marked a turning point in my intellectual life when I read it in 1977. Along with "The God Who is There" by Francis Schaeffer, it gave me the intellectual confidence to engage the world of ideas with passion and precision, for the glory of God. It is an exceptional piece of Christian social criticism, well thought-out and keenly written. Guinness thoroughly analyzes the historical and philosophical roots of the countercultural in a scholarly, but engaging manner. He meticulously documents his sources and is never condescending or unfair concerning views he opposes. Guinness philosophically analyzes the roots and fruits of the counterculture and finds them wanting logically and ethically. However, he does not endorse the American status quo. Instead, he calls us to follow "the third way" of Jesus Christ, in a radical community of love and truth.

The edition of the book contains some new material taken from Guinness later magisterial work, "The American Hour" (a book that never received the recognition it deserved). I recommend "The Dust of Death" for anyone desiring to understand the effect of the counterculture on American life. It is a model of how a Christian mind should engage contemporary culture.

                                  Book Description

Comme des Garcons -- "like the boys" -- is the title of a French soldier's song. It is also the label of Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo. Reserved in word but radical in action, Kawakubo is one of the most influential and subversive figures in contemporary fashion. At the forefront of stylistic movements that rocked the fashion world in the early eighties, Kawakubo created Comme des Garcons in 1973 and continues to reinvent her vision of clothing with each show.

Her mysterious creations are often closer to sculpture than clothing. Ragged, asymmetric, voluminous, or distressed, Kawakubo's designs mix eastern and western influences to articulate new shapes and a new definition of beauty. A figure at once rigorous, daring, and intellectual, this reclusive Japanese designer consistently receives praise from the press each season, both for her effect on new trends in beauty and for influencing the newest wave of young talent. Restlessly innovative, Rei Kawakubo has overturned every fashion convention over the past twenty-five years, ultimately redefining the very meaning of fashion itself.

One can only assume that the author of this book felt that (s)he also had the genius touch and creativity of Comme des Garcons' Rei Kawakubo. Unfortunately this is not the case. The essay is pointless, dull, and without enlightenment. The photographs--reprints of Comme des Garcons publicity materials--do not describe, critique, or illuminate the fashion or design work done by Kawakubo or Comme des Garcons, a dubious artsy pose instigated by Kawakubo herself. Only Grace Mirabella's foreward and the one-page company history at the end offer anything of interest to those fascinated by Kawakubo's amazing and uniquely original designs. What a waste.

                                  3 out of 5 stars Japanese Art..........2000-10-06

I was so excited when I saw a book had been published about Comme des Garcons and I was so disappointed when I got it in my hands. The book is full of very "arty" photographs of the designs but so arty that one can not even really see the clothes!

I have almost every book in the Universe of Fashion series and they are all superior in every way to this one - I was really sad about this as I LOVE Japanese design...therefore I still have to give it at least 3 stars.

In times past, folks imbued the natural materials in their homes with symbolic meaning, such as a sheaf of wheat to represent a bountiful harvest. Some of these traditions still survive--kissing under the mistletoe, for instance--but nowadays people can enjoy a tremendous variety of natural materials in their decor for the sheer beauty of it. Stocked with gardening and crafting information, this little volume explains in detail how to grow and harvest your own flowers, herbs, and other naturals, along with methods for drying and storing your crop. The general techniques section lists the necessary supplies and lays the groundwork on working with floral picks; forming bases for wreaths, centerpieces, and swags; and wiring garlands. The design section offers 40 step-by-step projects that celebrate the seasons (living herb centerpiece, summer flower basket, fall harvest wreath, Victorian Christmas wreath) or grace the wall and table any time (artemesia or birch bark swag, rosebud heart, seashell wreath). The photos, unfortunately, are rather uninspired; the designs are pretty, if a bit on the traditional side. Overall, the book's strengths lie more in its gardening than its crafting sections. --Amy Handy

                                                  Book Description

From wreaths to topiaries, centerpieces to kissing balls, Natural Décor describes simple and clear ways to make your own natural décor - whether you choose urban sophistication or rustic charm. Chapters include identifying flowers, foliage, grasses, herbs, pods, cones, and other odds and ends used in arrangements; growing, harvesting, and storing your own dried flowers, and how to collect them from wild places; the floral arranger's tool chest and techniques arrangers should know - from dyeing flowers to making a hand-wired wreath. Part Three is graced with beautiful photographs of forty special projects for all-season designs, holiday and winter designs, and spring and summer designs. Each project includes a list of materials and step-by-step instructions. This all-color guide brings to the reader the ancient custom of beautifying the home with nature's bounty. It's a must for gardeners, craftspeople, and anyone who enjoys nature's gifts. (6 X 9, 176 pages, color photos, charts)
