Book Description
Pursued by Gloria, a proud and sophisticated prostitute bent on curbing his wandering instincts, Pedro Juan is holed up in his crumbling Havana apartment—painting, beset by a growing sense of melancholy as he observes the lives of the hustlers, hipsters, and hookers in the city below. An invitation to Sweden—cold, unwelcoming, the antithesis of Pedro Juan’s Cuba—gives him an official way out. However, once in Europe he finds himself haunted by memories of the passionate Gloria and increasingly uninspired by this new environment. Does Pedro Juan, legendary seducer and sensual explorer, finally have to admit that his game is over, to be replaced by this more balanced, more secure, colder existence?
In his tight, tough prose, Pedro Juan Gutiérrez continues to explore human animalism with a joyous fearlessness absent from much of our contemporary culture and, in so doing, sheds a brilliant new light into the depths and complexities of the soul. With Tropical Animal, Pedro Juan Gutiérrez confirms his status as one of the finest new voices in not only contemporary Latin American literature, but in all of contemporary fiction.

Slightly disappointing.......2006-12-04
I read this a long time ago. I remember that I found this book to be pretty well written, but rether simplistic and predictable. I am not going to read the sequel. Hopefully, his other work is better.
Best Debut Novel in years.......2005-01-15
Truth to tell, I don't remember how long it's been since I've read such a good debut novel. This great yarn appears to have been written by a seasoned author.
Fantasy awards generally don't mean anything, as far as I'm concerned. I'll soon be writing a post on this subject. . . But Coe has won the William L. Crawford Award, for best first fantasy series. And based on this first volume, it was more than deserved.
I have no wish to include some spoilers in this post, for I do not want to deprive anyone of the pleasure of reading this wonderful book.:-) Suffice to say that you should all buy it!;-) Having said that, however, there is still a lot I can tell you about.
To begin with, the characterizations are excellent. Coe has created a number of three-dimensional characters. Some endearing and engaging, others less so; but all of them "real."
This series is also much more mature in its writing style. Which makes this a book destined for adults. I'm not saying that a younger crowd will not enjoy it. Far from it. But if you're someone who's eagerly awaiting R. A. Salvatore's next book, with all those choregraphed battle scenes and little substance, then this is probably not for you. . . No offense to Mr. Salvatore, but this story is not for the same sort of fantasy fans.
Plus, Coe's worldbuilding is distinctive and more than a little impressive for someone's first novel. The imagery is arresting, showing that the author has a good eye for details. The magic system offers a new twist, with mages bound to animals and the use of crystals. The myths and legends of the land, of which we only get a little glimpse in this novel, make you want to discover more.
The pace of the book keeps you turning the pages, even if it's far from being a thriller. In addition, Coe's prose is well beyond what we have come to expect from most fantasy novels. Children of Amarid is elegantly written, making it a wonderful read.
The author also tackles a traditional fantasy theme: Sorcery vs Technology. We only see a little of this in the novel, but a lot more appears to be in store in the next installment.
All in all, a very, very good book. It leaves you wanting to read more about Jaryd, Alayna, Baden, Trahn, Orris, and the rest of the characters. It leaves you wanting to learn more about Theron, Phelan, and the rest of the Unsettled. It leaves you wanting to learn more about Sartol. In short, it leaves you with a strong desire to return to the land of Tobyn-Ser. And to discover what lies to the west, in the technological world of Lon-Ser.
The only negative thing I can mention about this book concerns what little we learn about Sartol and how he came into power. But I have a feeling that it is something that will be addressed in the next 2 volumes of the series.
I commend this one to your attention. Novels with so much promise are few and far between.
In light of all this praise, I believe that Children of Amarid is a great addition to any fantasy collection.

All Hail King Jaryd!!!!!!.......2004-07-02
I stareted Winds of the Forelands before this series. I regret buying the other two books. It is another story of a young upstart that is "destinied for great things". It is annoying to see Jaryd's uncle ( who is older and wiser)act like a simpleton. It is also sad to see other mages bow to Jaryd. These people are Owl mages. They act like parakeet mages. Their ignorance is annoying.
I can not stand Trahn.
Cant he do anything else instead of offering advice and smiling?
Alyana acts out the "spirited by vunerable girlfriend". So her mentor is a tratior, big deal. You would think that Jaryd would not trust her.
I want the "bad" mage to win because I am tired of the passive mages who do nothing except complain and whine. Even great Orris, turns into a Jaryd cheerleader.
(...). It always happens.
Although these books were written before Winds of the Forelands, I was hoping for a great novel.
NOT!!!!!!
What a waste of money.
Not Good........2004-01-13
This book's language was ok, it was very normal english that everybody could understand. Finding the traitor was completely predictable, when you read his mad eyes with the time he lets his mad face come out in a meeting to friends, it pretty much clinched it for me. Characters were very poorly developed. They were all completely perfect, except for one or two flaws that did not make them seem too perfect, but the flaws were small. The character was amazingly insightful to everything which seemed a bit to (sorry to say this again) perfect for me. I almost bought the rest of the books in the trilogy, but lucky for me they did not have them in stock. It's 2 stars instead of one, because the last 20 pages were actually a little bit interesting.
Absolutely fabulous!!.......2003-11-06
this story starts off strong and keeps on going. Best have the next in the series and lock yourself in your room! You won't want to put them down.

Bradley Denton is alive and well and writing fabulous stuff.......2006-06-15
If you like a healthy dose of humor (and not a little music history) injected into your SF, I highly recommend Mr. Denton's 1992 Campbell Award-winning novel.
Denton makes the reader care about an imperfect, psychologically flawed protagonist who, by the end of the novel, reaches a remarkable (but not unrealistic) level of satisfaction and self-awareness. His secondary characters are well-developed and the reader might appreciate a couple of them even more than the main character.
Denton addresses a number of issues: the influence of television and passive entertainment on society, religion vs. morality, and the dangers of blindly siding with one point of view. He gives the reader something to think about, but doesn't preach or beat the reader over the head with his opinion.
Specific human interests allow "Buddy Holly Is Alive and Well on Ganymede" to be engrossing, compassionate, and entertaining. Denton's love of music, dogs, and motorcycles is enough to touch the reader, even if that particular affection is not something shared in common.
This title is no longer in print (unjust world!), but it's most certainly worth the effort to find a used copy.
Surreal SF That is Extremely Real.......2005-02-10
I was born and raised about 10 miles from where Bradley Denton went to high school and that location in Kansas is the scene of the climax in this extremely funny and bizarre SF novel. Denton is a brilliant writer, simply put. He creates believable characters with whom it is incredibly easy to empathize, then places them in extremely surreal and unimaginable situations. The result is a modern nod to Heinlein with humor and violence running hand-in-hand to point out the foibles and hypocrisy of modern society. These themes are common in all of Denton's novels and short stories, but this particular book brings it home in a much funnier story. Of course, the impact of the book is even stronger when some of the action literally travels down a street you grew up on and comes to a climax in the local drive-in theater where you spent many a hot summer night as a youth. At any rate, fans of classic rock'n'roll who also enjoy brilliant science fiction will love Buddy Holly is Alive and Well on Ganymede. Bring the popcorn!
A MUST-read for sci-fi OR Rock and roll fans.......1999-01-05
Although my generation is much more rcent than the rock and roll legends of this book, I found the novel entertaining, exciting, suspensful, and with a great sense of humor. Even rock-and-roll fans, if not sci-fi fans, should read this treasure!

With the idea that spiritual ideas are at work in everyday life, this book identifies ten characteristics of people who practice spirituality in a down-to-earth way.
Customer Reviews:
A Great, Down-to-Earth Look at Spirituality.......2005-08-13
In the last few years I've been researching the topic of spirituality & what it really means to be a spiritual person. Of all the books I've read to date, this is probably the most down-to-earth & easy to read/understand.
The author provides many great examples of both spiritual and not so spiritual living - outlining what it takes to step up to the plate and live from a higher perspective.
Much of this book deals with the importance of our intentions, and the need for a more holistic way of thinking/being. The harm that the current seperatist philosophy has caused is also discussed - The idea being that we need to realize that we are all connected in some way, and what we do & say really does have an impact on the world at large.
Overall, I would highly recommend this book for anyone on a spiritual journey, as well as those who are wondering what being "spiritual" is all about.
Puts the ýlightý back in Enlightenment........2003-06-10
Refreshing, no matter what your spiritual background. Gottberg's straight-forward style shows us that the path to true spiritual wisdom does not necessary have to come through thick, lofty academic tomes or decades of rigorous religious practice. The language of the spirit is revealed in the everyday - the struggles and gains we make through the issues of family, friends, money and self-worth. The objective comes in recognizing the spiritual lessons and applying that wisdom in the next situation - all without attachment to external results.
It's Both Practical and Spiritual.......2003-05-17
Kathy Gottberg's book, The Findhorn Book of Practical Spirituality gives a multitude of practical suggestions that help us develop spiritually, connected to It, God, the Universe, Mind, and Spirit. Personally, as a rosarian, I loved her practical analogies to gardening, reminding us that everything has a season, needs nourishment and we always need to ward off negative predators and weeds. As a licensed psychotherapist, I was pleased to see her simple relationship suggestions like people don't "satisfy our every need and want..." but "are walking with us as we learn who we are." At last, there is a practical book I can have in my office for patients who want to improve themselves spiritually as well as emotionally.
Practical Spirituality, Short & Sweet.......2003-05-13
Practical Spirituality is "short and sweet". It is "short" because it does not take hundreds of pages to say that to live a more spiritual life, that is, to actually practice spirituality, like you might practice a life of industriousness or a life of devotion to a person or a cause, that you have only to be aware that "this moment" is the only moment you have control of, that your perspective and your reaction to the current situation are the only things under your control, and that if any of us are divine, then all of us are divine, regardless of how we are acting out our mortal lives here on this planet, which is certainly divine. It is "sweet" for the same reason, that is, to understand the last sentence is to be aware, responsible and accountable for what we think, how we view, how we react to whatever happens each moment of our waking life. Very practical, indeed. I liked it and I "practice" because I believe that "practice makes perfect", and that practicing spirituality tends to make one practically perfect, as a mortal, but divine, being...
Puts the Spirit Back in Spirituality.......2003-04-29
Kathy Gottberg's spirited little book delivers just what it claims it will--a down-to-earth guide to a happier, more spiritual life. Readers may encounter ideas from the New Thought movement, eastern religions, and metaphysics for the first time here or find welcome reminders during a journey begun long ago. Either way, "Practical Spirituality" provides support for almost all aspects life from finances to relationships. It's a quick easy read and comes with a practical price-tag too. For less than the cost of a movie and popcorn, you can spend an enjoyable evening and enrich your life as well.

Book Description
The Beckett Racing Price Guide And Alphabetical Checklist is the most comprehensive racing price guide available!
For almost two decades, Dr. James Beckett and the Beckett staff have produced annual price guides for sports collectibles. And now, they've compiled this guide for you -- the racing fan! It includes more than 700 set listings for NASCAR, IndyCar, Formula One, Drag Racing, Sprint Cars and World of Outlaws! Plus, die cast, promotional and phone cards too!
Customer Reviews:
The Most Sought After Price Guide In The Hobby.......2001-09-01
Folks, let's make this nice and simple, Beckett Price Guides are the most accepted price guides in the world PERIOD No other racing price guide even comes close to the popularity of Beckett. Collectors the WORLD over look enthusiastically for each new Beckett release. As for this book, I dare say you will not find another publication that covers its listings in greater detail. This book lists thousands of cards and hundreds of die-cast car values. With the card listings, many sets are given a value along with vital information about each one. Then many sets are broken down into listings for each individual card and a value placed on each card. There's listings for vintage sets as well as some of the more popular ones. Photos are included as well as special notations about things like error cards, rare subsets and the like. This guide will be a big help to anyone interested in the racing hobby. Beckett guides are the ONLY ones I currently use.
Outdated Price Guide.......1999-06-15
Soon after the release of the Beckett Racing Price Guide, the Beckett Racing & Motorsports Marketplace monthly magazine drastically reduced the book value of most trading cards. In doing so, Beckett rendered their own Beckett Racing Price Guide useless. The racing trading card enthusiast would be better off subscribing to the monthly magazine.
This is the pricing Bible for auto racing cards.......1999-06-12
Beckett Price Guides have been around forever. With only the third edition printed specifically for auto racing cards, this has quickly become the only guide you'll need to evaluate your entire collection!
A Must Have Book for all Card and Die-cast Collectors.......1998-11-27
Dr. Beckett has done it again! The Beckett Racing Guide #3 is a must for all Racing and Die-cast collectors. The book has listings by card and die-cast manufactors, by years and has a alphbetical listing for all of the drivers. As a card collector I rate this book very high because it is very imporant to know the card number, year printed and it gives two price listings on the condition of the card. A+++

Book Description
The Beaded Lampshade Book elevates the common lampshade to an artform. This book has a delightful array of beaded lampshades for everyone. Created with a variety of techniques, there are close to 20 projects that will make your home look new and exciting!
Customer Reviews:
The Beaded Lampshade Book.......2006-11-11
The book has some nice ideas. Directions are complete. I am disappointed, however; that there are so few colored pictures.
Beyond the Fringe.......2001-03-15
First, I have to admit that I'm a beaded lampshade fanatic. There is something about the quality of light shimmering through a fringe of translucent beads that I find particularly soothing and pretty. "The Beaded Lampshade Book" by Wendy Simpson Conner caters to that taste, although not always in the way that I expected it to. Some of the patterns in this book involve nets that are woven to cover an entire lampshade, shades that are decorated by cementing beads onto them, and shades that are completely constructed of freeform woven beads. Out of a total of thirteen lampshade designs included in this 49-page book, only three (the Commanche Stitch Lampshade, the Art Deco Lampshade, and the Turkish Lampshade) conformed to my preconceived notion of what a beaded shade should look like. Wendy Simpson Conner takes her readers way beyond a mere fringe!
The author is very clear on what materials are needed to create each of the 13 lampshades. The drawings and photographs that accompany the text are in black and white, although there are four pages of colored photographs showing the finished lampshades. A more liberal employment of color in some of the complicated bead patterns would have been a definite improvement. All in all, though, this is a useful little spiral-bound guide for the beaded lampshade fanatic.
Time to redecorate?.......2000-06-27
Start with beaded lampshades! Well written instructions accompany clear diagrams to help you make these light catching shades. From glue to peyote stitch, this book has projects for all skill levels. Projects include the understated Art Deco lamp on the cover to the lush Turkish lampshade.
So get out the lamps you had hidden because you just can't stand them and give them a beady makeover!
Book Description
Beaded lampshades are not only for Granny’s end tables—you’ll find you can make your own embellished lampshades with a contemporary look. “The book covers in detail all you need to know about the basics—lamp bases, shade frames, shade coverings, globes, and cleaning. Gives instructions for beginner projects (beaded tassels and shelves) and finally for ornate, gorgeous lampshades.”—Beadwork.
Customer Reviews:
Very helpful resource.......2007-07-26
I found this book a very helpful resource in learning how to bead lampshades. The photographs are just gorgeous and the text is helpful. The only thing it didn't help with was how to do the math to figure out your pattern and string length. I had to struggle with that. But this is the most helpful resource I could find for doing this type of project. I highly recommend it.

Book Description
Discover how to recreate and restore authentic period architecture, furnishings and detailing in the Art Deco style. Filled with practical advice and sources of materials, and much additional related information, this is not only for those who wish to restore their homes to their original style, but is also a comprehensive, fascinating work of reference.
Customer Reviews:
A very ambitious tytle for this book.......2002-02-14
The book deals mainly with the 1930s houses in England, not specially noted for Art Deco. Many of the popular market interpretations of the Art Deco style in the UK at that time were and are somewhat "kitsch", and the book reproduces them in full colour.
There are few decorative elements of the 1920s, non-English, that are worth while. The photography is good, as is the printing, the weak point is on the examples shown. Reading the bibliography gives a clue to the contents.
Great book with wonderful illustrations.......2002-01-02
This book was a gift for my sister who recently purchased a 1920's home. She loved the book. It contains so many great detailed illustrations of inside and outside the Art Deco home. It will be a great reference for refurbishing her slightly run down home. It also included a list of sources for a variety of home funishings.
