Kruzurk Makshare the magician is asked by the spirit of Merlin of Pendragon, his long dead mentor, to destroy another former apprentice, the villainous Seed of Cerberus. That requires entry into Blackgloom Keep which can only be entered via sorcery. Kruze realizes he needs help, since he cannot use sorcery. He chooses Daynin McKinnon, who has just discovered what may be the fabled Scythian Stone.

Kruze uses the stone to gain entry into the fortress, which causes a whole series of unforeseen and horrific events to unfold for Daynin and his cadre of friends. The colorful cast of good guys includes the lovely Sabritha who becomes a love interest for Daynin. There is also the ghost of a giant resurrected Pictish king named Brude McAlpin, who both helps and hinders Daynin and Kruzurk in the rest of their adventures.

Assorted bad guys include Saxons, Caledonians and numerous other cutthroats bent on capturing Daynin for the bounty put on his head and the bounty he discovered at Blackgloom. Those bounties are the driving force behind all of the chasing, combat and magical events that occur in the rest of the book. And there is a LOT of that in this 445 page epic.

This book provides a wealth of historical detail which should set a new standard for fantasy readers who want more than mere monsters and magic to whet their imagination. Most romance readers, too, will find plenty of the 'spice' they seek, as will all those fantasy readers who are looking for a cast of characters in the Conan vein.

Blackgloom is the first book in a five book series. Episode two, THE REGENTS OF RHUM is in the works. Blackgloom is also being considered for a movie option.

The Blackgloom Bounty is one of those rambling, picaresque fantasies which makes occasional hectic detours into a universe strongly resembling 10th Century border region of present-day Northern England and Southern Scotland. The story rackets along at a tremendous pace; rather like an amusement park ride or a fiendishly complicated Dungeons and Dragons game. At the end of it, you are dumped out with a spinning head and a perhaps not-quite accurate memory of everything that went on, except that everyone seemed to be having tremendous fun. The reader remembers that there was an enormous cast of characters, rushing about, and it was all something to do with curses, stolen inheritances, a stalwart young heir hidden away, a feisty wench, brave warriors, secret tombs, ghosts, wicked noblemen, spells and shape-changing, magic stones and a treasure of wonderful wealth, a sea-monster... and then, and then and then... the review would be about as long as the book itself, if I attempted to do even a short recapitulation. And it wouldn't be anywhere near as amusing. Just think of "The Blackgloom Bounty" as the fantasy-novel equivalent of the stateroom scene in the old Marx Brothers movie "A Night at the Opera".

When young Daynin and his grandfather find a curiously carved stone while plowing their field, they have little idea that it is the legendary Scythian Stone... but a wandering magician named Kruzurk Makshare does... and with a few brisk preliminaries, Daynin is off and running on the adventure of his life, to find and liberate an enormous treasure, and then to keep hold of it. The author has concocted an intricate yarn, briskly paced, and in a writing style which is always workmanlike and quite frequently sparkles. He also has an ear for conversation, which also serves the story well. This is the first volume of a projected series, and a worthwhile read to any devotee of the fantasy-adventure genre.

And there is a bit with a dog, too.

I read and finished Blackgloom in one night...I most especially loved the bantering back and forth between Boozer and Daynin. The first 10 chapters for me were magical! I felt at home with the Scottish accents and phrases!! From the feel of the pages to the picture around the chapter #'s, it was an enjoyable journey, thanks for the ride!

Someone else described this novel as Harry Potter for grownups, which is apt enough. The author has created a fun grownup fantasy, with loads of wit.

I'm no expert about medieval Britain, but the world setting portrayed in The Blackgloom Bounty seems impressive. I like the numerous groups portrayed, such as the highlanders, Anglish, Saxons, and Cruinthi/Picts. The accents are great, and it is the inclusion of these historical aspects that set the scene to make the rest of the book and the artifacts such as the Scythian Stone more real. I love the depth of the supporting cast, and how the book follows individuals and groups and not just our main protagonist. The Blackgloom Bounty is action-packed. I think the changing scenes between the various groups we are following was very artfully done and made with such cinematic timing that I am continuously wanting to know what happens to everyone. I flew through the last few chapter because of how amazing the climax was written. I really wanted to know what was going to happen to the Scythian Stone, but I suppose I'll just have to wait for the next book in the series to find out more about it.

This is a AWESOME book. It tells the story of the Teen Titian episde "Sisters" from Starfire's piont of view and really goes into more depth on whats going on.Any one who loves Teen Titians should read this book.

Evil Blackfire; Good Book!.......2005-05-29

I've never read this book before, but I've seen the episode. Blackfire is Starfire's older sister from Tameran their home plant, they don't really like each other(kinda like all siblings), but Blackfire has come to Earth after being at the Centarie Moons to see her sister and give her Centarie Moon diamond...OR DID SHE?!?!?! Later they desided to go to a dance party. While there the Centarie police come to arrest Starfire for stealing diamonds, but she explanes that she has never been to the Centarie Moons, but Robin remided her who has been there:Blackfire!!! Once they find Blackfire, Starfire and her battle to see who is the strongest. Blackfire thinks she all that, but as you cann all tell, she's not. In the middle of the battle the police take Blackfire to jail for stealing. In the end Starfire talks to Robin and says that she thought they were going to replace her with Blackfire, but Robin explanes that nobody could ever replace Starfire.

Teen Titans is all about fun, adventure, growing up with a group of buddies and searching the disasterous livingroom for the remote control! This delightful series is not the typical tights-and-cape comic-book based cartoon series. It's about getting along with others, about accepting people as they are, no matter how different they are from you. It's also about owning up to responsibility and this series speaks loudly about such matters. Thumbs up for a series that speaks boldly and colorfully on many issues and makes the journey FUN!

Although I am female, as a child and a teenager I didn't cook much. When I went to college, I cooked even less. Then suddenly I was in a position where I was going to have to start cooking meals, and I didn't have a clue of what to do.

I discovered this book, and I grabbed it! Ir was made to order for someone like me. The instructions were plain, easy to understand, and within two days I was preparing Rock Cornish Game Hen with garlic stuffing! Not only did I appreciate the recipes, I also appreciated what I found out about cooking in general.

I would even recommend the book for experienced cooks. The recipes taste great and are easy to prepare.

A classic, well-loved favorite!.......2003-09-12

I knew just by the name of this cookbook that I needed it when I first bought it 18 years ago. It is still in my kitchen, I still use it all the time, and I still love it! But I need a new copy because it is turning brown with age and it is held together with tape. As the author writes in the foreword, this book is for those who "would like clear directions on how to cook the basic foods, who are well aware that foods can be braised, flambéed, and souffléed but who are really only interested . . . in getting a decent, well-cooked meal on the table with the least amount of trauma." I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to cook and serve respectable, even delicious, meals but who has other things they would far rather do than spend a lot of time in the kitchen. I hope this book will be republished, if not---buy it used!
