Book Description
Over the past decade, Paul Russell has acquired the repu-tation of one of the finest contemporary novelists. Now, in War Against the Animals, he's written perhaps his finest, most accomplished novel to date. Living in a small town in upstate New York, Cameron, a Manhattan transplant, has recently recovered a measure of health after almost succumbing to AIDS. He hires two local boys, brothers Jesse and Kyle, to do some renovation work. Kyle sees an opportunity in Cameron, pushing Jesse to befriend Cameron and take advantage of his boredom and directionlessness. Caught between the opposing worlds embodied by Cameron and Kyle, Jesse is torn by the demands of his brother, the expectations of his community and family, and his own mix of volatile, contradictory emotions toward himself, Kyle, and Cameron.
Customer Reviews:
An uncertain affair.......2006-12-10
Superbly written story concerning Cameron Barnes, retired garden designer, who moves from Manhattan to Stone Hollow. He starts a new life after the loss of his love to AIDS, while his own AIDS is in remission, befriending a number of the local gay community. He decides to employ a local pair of young brothers to repair his barn and eventually falls for Jesse, the younger of two brothers. There develops an interesting and uneven relationship between Cameron and Jesse. Jesse is encouraged by his loutish older brother Kyle to exploit Cameron in order to extract money, but Jesse is confused by Cameron's attentions, and is uncertain of his own motives. Jesse begins to doubt too his attraction to his long standing girlfriend. The strange relationship that develops between Cameron and Jesse is beautifully told. There are other sub plots, and a very brief appearance of Tracy Parker, the young teacher from Russell's The Coming Storm, since moved on.
Russell's beautiful prose makes this worth reading alone, put this together with the touching relationship that ensues between Cameron and Jesse, it is a book not to be missed.
And I thought The Coming Storm was the best.......2005-05-10
I was wrong. This novel exceeds its predecessor in so many ways, it's difficult to remember all of the reasons why my jaw literally dropped by the time I was finished with the book.
War Against the Animals, unlike many of Paul Russell's novels, focuses mainly on two voices rather than four. Set three years after The Coming Storm, the first protagonist, Cameron Barnes, is a homosexual man with AIDS who used to create beautiful landscaping projects but is now retired and living alone in Stone Hollow. The other, young, misguided Jesse Vanderhof, is hired on along with his brother Kyle by Cameron to do some work on a shed.
Despite Cameron's efforts to look "straight" for his new workers, it's obvious to both brothers that Cameron is gay, loaded, and probably has no idea what to do with his cash. He's a gay man living alone, he has AIDS. What will he do with it all when he dies?
Kyle creates a scheme in which Jesse will befriend Cameron, earn his trust. If all goes well, then maybe Jesse might find his name written in a certain dying man's will, and when the time comes all that money will be theirs. Jesse willingly goes along with the plan, for he sees Cameron as this lonely dying man who once lived in the city but has now come to Stone Hollow to live out the remainder of his sorry life in peace. But at first Jesse does not see the other side of Cameron, that other alternative world full of lovers and friends, a world where Cameron Barnes's life and well-being and happiness truly matters.
Cameron, in the meanwhile, has his own insights as to Jesse's quiet, inconsistent nature. Maybe a lot of what he thinks is true, for he pictures Jesse as this closeted individual who is hiding away behind a shield consisting of his contempt, his heterosexual image, and his girlfriend. What Jesse is hiding from, Cameron wants to find out. He even offers to take the boy to Turkey, his hometown, but to no avail: Jesse is so confused and upset with his life at that point that he doesn't want to consider taking a trip with a gay man to some strange place.
While Jesse's supposedly well-constructed life comes crashing down in the course of a single summer, Cameron becomes, for a period of time, the one and only person who understands what is hurting Jesse. He becomes the one person in the world who can bring the young man comfort and peace.
I loved every moment, every event in this entire novel. I can flip to any random page and just start reading in the middle of a paragraph and become so deeply immersed in the story, able to know what is going on. I admit to crying at the end, including the part where Jesse contemplates Cameron's offer to take him to Turkey that summer. The characterizations throughout the novel were so consistent, powerful and convincing. To me, these people really could have existed.
An excellent novel from one of our best gay novelists.......2004-09-19
I had been eagerly awaiting the release of Paul Russell's latest novel, War Against the Animals - and I was not disappointed.
Russell's novels are always engaging, usually revolving around characters who are coping with loss. In this novel, both characters are coping with the loss of adolescent innocence that comes with the acceptance of one's sexuality.
Cameron Barnes, one of the main characters, is living out the end of his life looking back at his youth - haunted by memories of the boy he loved (before he could name it that), the boy who abused him, and the boy who eventually became the love of his life.
These memories render him open to the companionship of Jesse Vanderhof, the other main character. He is a young "redneck," who initially befriends Cameron in order to bilk him for money. But along the way, Jesse undergoes an awakening that parellels the memory-life Cameron is re-living.
Russell pairs these twin stories of lost innocence with a motif of gardens. The gardens represent an interesting counterpoint to the characters, and help to symbolically tie them and their experiences together.
I was struck by Cameron's character - he is surrounded by friends who love and cherish him, but his loneliness is palpable, especially as he realizes that Max, his oldest and dearest friend, doesn't really "know" him at all.
An excellent novel. I can also highly recommend Russell's other novels - especially "The Coming Storm."
Henry James Revisited.......2004-02-25
Anyone familiar with the plot of "The Wings of the Dove" will know where this book is going. A doomed character is taken advantage of by someone he is smitten with at the instigation of a third party. The two plotters succeed beyond their wildest dreams but the victory is a hollow one. Mr Russell handles his material excellently and transposes the theme into the gay world very successfully. My only disappointment was that the situation of Jesse, the brother with a conscience, is still not resolved by the end of the book - but that's life!
Surprising depth and compassion after a shaky beginning........2004-01-14
I very nearly put this book down after the first couple of chapters when it seemed to be veering toward tired cliche and stereotypes. Fortunately, I laid that judgement aside for a moment and was soon lost in the gothic drama and melancholy of this small New York mountain town. Talented writing brings freshness and originality to a tale is essentially the old fable of brother against brother. Cameron is a man who has been granted a reprieve (albeit temporary) from the ravishes of AIDS related illness and is facing life alone after a long-term, nearly sexless relationship. He is man capable of being surprised by joy despite his gentle scorn for the New Age spirituality of many of his friends. His compassion for wild things is evident in his tolerance when he discovers a half-starved deer munching plants in his beloved "Chaos Garden" and his humane removal of a dead 'possum from the middle of the road.
When Jesse, the younger, thoughtful brother of a wild, charismatic, and alcoholic redneck, enters his employ, Cameron's gentle, unself-conscious manner awakens something in the young man that he had tried to bury n the past. In turn, Jesse's uncouth beauty and occasionally startling candor, awakens something Cameron thought had died when the love of his life succumbed to AIDS. Like stars viewed in a city skyline, Jesse's light was obscured by the dazzle of his brother Kyle's larger than life personality. He is not even aware, most of the time, of what his brother takes from him. His own brilliance shines when he away from the toxic influence of Kyle. In the end, this is Jesse's story and he will haunt you when the book is over. I found myself re-reading certain passages this morning after staying up until 3 a.m. to finish the book.

"Behold the King of Shadows".......2005-02-04
Curse of the Shadowmage is the eleventh book in the Forgotten Realms Harpers series and the sequel to the Crypt of the Shadowking. Caledan Caldorien finds himself trying to overcome the same curse that has afflicted his ancestor eons ago. Mari Al'maren, together with several of Caledan's old adventuring companions from the Fellowship of the Dreaming Dragon, and some new allies, set out to save their friend.
Slightly better than the first book, Curse of the Shadowmage is very well written, with the reader feeling that they have been transported to another universe and are actually present among the characters, seeing what they see, feeling what they feel, sensing what they sense.
On the negative side, ENOUGH with the author portraying the Harpers as being oppressive, twisting the arms of their members and making them carry out their instructions while suppressing their free will etc! Last time I checked, the Harpers were the heroes keeping the Realms from falling under the sway of Evil! K'shar, who in the end, supposedly "saw the light" and turned stag is portrayed as the "hero" who "breaks free" of the Harpers (???). Is there something wrong with the picture here? All right, let's do away with hierarchy and the chain of command, and have the agents vote whether they want to take a specific assignment!!! That will work...
Moreover, the Shadowstar and the Shadevari are too similar to J.R.R. Tolkien's One Ring and the Nazgul respectively.
In addition, WAY too many characters are "coming back from the dead" to the point that it is getting tiring/annoying...
Furthermore, on page 309 (the last page in the book) the author states "Now Kellen was the last person in the world with shadow magic." That is just not true as Richard Baker will show in The Shadow Stone, unless that was the case for a very short period of time.
Aside from that it's a pretty good book; the plot, the writing and the characters are very well thought out and presented!
The story of the Shadevari, Azuth, and the creation of the world, along with the Shadowstar, (Pp242) is GREAT.
K'shar is a FASCINATING character who deserves a whole book (at least) all to himself.
Finaly, there is some very witty humor between Cormick and Jewel.
Other books I would recommend from the Harpers Series include Red Magic, Parched Sea, The Veiled Dragon, Elfshadow and Elfsong to mention a few.
Not as good as Crypt.......2002-12-12
As a follow up to Crypt of the Shadowking this book falls flat. I really can't place exactly where or how, except that maybe the main focus shifted from Cal to Mari. Most of the adventure and excitement were really lacking. Oh, I just realized what was wrong. . . .there really isn't a main villain here. You pretty much know how the book will end before you're even halfway through. At least Crypt had a good foe for Cal in Cutter. Here it is more of a race against time, without any of the real suspense on whether they will succeed in their quest to help their friend. This is a passable book, but only if you have nothing better to read.
Great book and excellent sequel!.......2000-08-02
Great book! I have enjoyd reading this book very much. But if you haven't read the previous one (Crypt of the Shadowking) y recommend you to read it, becouse it's as good as this one.
The plot here is placed in time sortly after Crypt of the Shadowmage. The plot is great, and, even when you can see what is happening, you don't know for sure how it is going to end. The Quest for find ...ejem.."something" (I can't say it here, sorry, you'll understand when you read it ;P ) is not long and with some surprise, and maybe you can guess how it will end and maybe. II didn't guess when I readed it but, I was to deep inside the book reading it, that I wasn't thinking of what will happen or how will it end.
The characters are also good. The only dissapoint I have is with Kellen. Ok, he is lovely, but, for my taste, he is a bit perfect, knows everything and is thinking in things a child of his age wouldn't think. He must have been playing instead of saving the world, but even with this, the book is great.
Buy it, and judge yourself, is the best I can say.
Superb!.......1999-03-28
This is the sequel to "Crypt of the Shadowking" and is even better!! I love Anthony's writing style. This was a compulsive read, and I finished it in about a day. The narrative sweeps the reader along with just the right pacing and excitememt, and the story itself is a logical extension of the first book. The only slight problems were that, 1. the whole story surrounding Stiletto was just too predictable; sorry Mark, but I saw it coming a mile away, and 2. I was a little disappointed with the epilogue, which I thought was a bit unfair (I can't say why without giving away important elements of the story). But these really are minor quibbles, and I would highly recommend both of Anthony's "Harpers" books. I hope that we will see another story about these characters. I'd especially like to see something involving Kellen as Morhion's apprentice; could have lots of interesting possibilities! When you finish your latest writing project, how about it Mark?
Excellent sequel.......1999-02-24
Very entertaining! Caledan and Morhion are very intriguing characters, not to mention Kellen. I read that book in les than 2 or 3 days so much it hooked me up. Recommanded, as well as the prequel 'Crypt of the Shadowking'.
Book Description
With essays by an international and interdisciplinary group of scholars, Dark Horizons focuses on the development of critical dystopia in science fiction at the end of the twentieth century. In these narratives of places more terrible than even the reality produced by the neo-conservative backlash of the 1980s and the neoliberal hegemony of the 1990s, utopian horizons stubbornly anticipate a different and more just world. The top-notch team of contributors explores this development in a variety of ways: by looking at questions of form, politics, the politics of form, and the form of politics. In a broader context, the essays connect their textual and theoretical analyses with historical developments such as September 11th, the rise and downturn of the global economy, and the growth of anti-capitalist movements.

Book Description
IN THE BEGINNING there was Beard," said Julia Child, and perhaps no other individual played such a central role in America’s postwar fascination with food and cooking. James Beard took American food seriously at a time when French cuisine was revered above all others, and his ebullient personality, genuine culinary talents, and assiduous self-promotion (he once called himself "the world’s greatest gastronomic whore") transformed the struggling actor from Oregon into a world-renowned authority on cooking and eating. First published as James Beard, a Biography (HarperCollins, 1993), this award-winning book was chosen as a "Notable Book of the Year" by the New York Times Book Review and called one of the best food books of the year by Julia Child on "Good Morning America." The Solace of Food is both the definitive biography of Beard and a fascinating history of food. Clark writes candidly about the "feuds and bitchery, betrayal and revenge" inside the food world and about Beard’s homosexuality in a closeted period. "Clark has given us a vivid portrait of a sometimes bizarre but ultimately fascinating man of our times," said the Times, "but his real achievement is having produced a valuable and thoroughly engrossing work of contemporary cultural history."
Customer Reviews:
Revealing Look at the Life of the American Culinary Icon.......2004-02-09
The significance of the title of this book by Robert Clark is that James Beard had a somewhat rocky childhood, failed at his first love of being an actor, and never seemed to achieve any great satisfaction from his awkwardly homosexual inclination. Food was Beard's consolation.
One major change in my view of the world due to my reading this book together with a reading of a biography of Julia Child is that I believe that Child and not Beard is the preeminant influence on American eating habits in the 20th century. Whether this is real or a failure of this book to communicate Beard's influence I am not sure. This question makes me feel this book is less than what it could have been. It almost seems as if the book were written about Hemingway without dealing with the foundations of Hemingway's literary art. An easier analogy may be that it is like a biography of Richard Feynman which makes no attempt to explain to the intelligent layman what it is about Feynman's work which made him a great physicist.
In spite of this reservation, the book succeeds in communicating the facts of Beard's life in a highly readable, sympathetic presentation. Like other reviewers, I could not put the book down as long as I had the free time to read it. I cannot make the same unqualifiedly positive statement about the aforementioned biography of Child.
One of the most interesting things about Beard's career is that were it not for his failure in front of the TV camera in the fiftys, he may have stolen a march on Child and had a greater impact on his American audience. He may have even become even more like the kind of trademark that Martha Stewart has become, in that many of the writings attributed to him were done by a staff of ghost writers, many of whom have become major names in American food writing. These include Marian Cunningham and Barbara Kafka.
Another similarity to Stewart which tends to diminish him in comparison to Child is his very common practice of endorsing products and letting that endorsement interfere with his work. I may even give Martha Stewart the nod here in that Stewart has always taken an active interest in the quality of the products to which she has lent her name. A third similarity to Stewart is the fact that both began their career in food writing as caterers in the New York area.
In the final analysis, this book does succeed in showing how Beard came to represent American Cookery at its best, even if it does not manage to show why he succeeded. This is an important book for understanding American food writing.
Fascinating, multi-faceted journey.......1999-08-24
I found this a compelling piece of writing. The starting point is certainly the life of an individual, i.e, James Beard. However, into that particular story the author weaves culinary history, social commentary, cultural analysis, and psychological insight. The result is an amazingly satisfying "read" that educates, illuminates, moves the heart, and deepens perspective both about this one man and also about the world in which he--and we--live. Robert Clark is able to paint a descriptive and insightful portrait of both the man and that world without romanticizing either. I found myself drawn into the book and reading it with relish; not wanting to put it down and also not wanting it to come to an end; and discovering that I have been enlightened, enriched, and moved by my experience with it. Sounds to me like the definition of a "good read!"

Wonderful, informative book. Wish there was a COMPLETTE book on all Mettlach steins made with current values. A great reference book for any stein collector's library :-)
Very detailed; superb collection of magnificent steins........1998-10-27
I loved the layout of the steins throughout the book. I wish there was much more color photos, to display the exemplary color and brillance of these collectibles. I hope there will be an updated catalog (which is a very detailed, several hundred paged, hardcover book) very soon. I admire the craftsmanship that dates back hundreds of years.
A "must have" reference book for any stein collector........1998-03-23
Beautiful illustrations throughout, price range included for all steins listed. Well worth the price. If you love steins, you can spend hours reading this book and you will refer to it often if you're a collector.

Anthology of Modern Informational Graphic Design.......1998-03-09
I liked the depth and breadth of projects for informational graphic design. As a reference in How magazine's 3/98 article on wayfinding systems. I found it better than Edward Tuftes' trilogy of Visual Display..., Visual Explanations..., and Envisioning Info....
I think that this essential reading for a technical oriented designer.
Beautiful, but I was disappointed.......1998-03-05
I own, and like very much, Graphis Diagrams 1. I was dismayed to see examples from Diagrams 1 repeated in Diagrams 2, for no apparent reason. I also was dismayed at the omission, in most cases, of media notes in the project descriptions (which are now separated from the examples, as an index in the back of the book).

Book Description
When Denice's 10 year old son, Michael, begins seeing strange objects he describes as light and dark shadows, no one believes him. But when objects levitate and people are locked in closets, they come to believe that their house is haunted. They try exorcisms and psychic detectives. Nothing helps. They move, but the demonic acts continue and become more and more dangerous. Then Denice realizes that it's not the house that's haunted; it's Michael.
Customer Reviews:
Do you people even realize what you are writing?.......2007-02-17
I have personally known the family for seven years now. I realize that people are hatefull unkind creatures, but the book IS based on real life events. They weren't fabricated for the publishing house. And god forbid anything like this should happen to you or your family? You'd better hope someone like Denice is around to help. Michael and D, love you! Lucy
VERY SCARY.......2006-05-28
This is a must read for anyone that wants a great ghost story. I do find this story very believable, because I could not imagine anyone could make up the kind of things that happen to this family. I highly recommend it to anyone with a interest in the paranormal.
Unbelievable.......2005-04-09
I have read many "true account" books on hauntings, this book just seems unbelievable. It seems more made up than any I have ever read. Parts of it seem like it's been taken from movies like - "poltergeit", "Amityville", etc... It's just too hard to believe it's true and that Michael would continue playing or even sleeping in his room after experiencing some of the alleged things that went on in there. Or even that the parents would want him in that room. If the book is true... I do believe that it has been overly exagerated. I am disappointed in it.
Ouija board and a church in the basement, hmmm...........2004-01-19
I read the hard cover version of this book. I borrowed it from the library.
Dad abandons family to hook up with a girlfriend who has a church in her basement. Dad then goes to basement to pray.
Such a upstanding guy, abandons his family and prays - something doesn't jive here.
On page 32 there is reference to a church in the basement of dad's girlfriend's house. There is also mention that the boys played with the Ouija board while at this house.
hmmm.... so religious to have a church in the basement of your house yet there is a(n) Ouija board lying around upstairs for people to play with.
Makes you wonder what type of church is this... I see 'Red Flags,' do you ?
pg. 306- author doesn't believe that people invite spirits into their lives. I think we do play a part in inviting spirits (good or evil) into our lives.
I wonder if the Ouija board play mentioned on pg. 32 has any connection to inviting evil spirits into the lives of the Jones.
Something to think about. And do read up on the dangers of the Ouija board and occults.
I believe.......2003-11-09
It's hard for me to believe these type of things without experiencing it first-hand (as it is for most people.) Denice Jones had me believing her story after the first chapter. It is excellently writen and will have you on the edge of your seat eager to find out what happens next!
