Kit Reed has been one of science fiction's strongest voices since she published her first short story in 1958, a tale called "The Wait" that appeared in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. Much of her work since has focused on women and women's issues, subjects Reed both has a passion for and has much to say about. As the title of this book suggests, it's a collection of Reed's stories dealing with women--a total of 19 starting with "The Wait" and ending with "Whoever." Although Weird Women, Wired Women has been described as a "needed contribution by an important feminist fiction writer," on a more basic level it's an excellent collection by a gifted author. Reed's crisp prose and focused plots complement her insights into society, whether she's dealing with the treatment of women in a male-dominated culture or the relationship between a mother and daughter. --Craig Engler

Book Description

Kit Reed has been delighting and terrifying readers for over thirty years with her darkly comic speculative fiction. This collection of short stories, drawn from a lifetime's work, shows Reed at the top of her form. First published in venues ranging from The Missouri Review to The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction and The Norton Anthology of Contemporary Fiction, these twenty stories deal with women's lives and feminist issues from the kitchen sink and pink dishmop era through the warlike years of the women's movement to the uneasy accommodation of the present.

The book has a very interesting title but the stories just don't live up to it. They wind around and around without going anywhere, they messages at the end of each story are just not interesting.

4 out of 5 stars Weird Women, Wired Women.......2000-03-28

I saw this book in a local library, it was sitting on the bottom shelf and it caught my eye. I checked it out because it was a compilation of short stories, and I didn't have to set aside the time to be involved in a book. I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO MISTAKEN IN MY ENTIRE LIFE! The stories are fantastic and they leave you pondering for weeks. I loved this book so much that even before finishing it, I was searching the internet for more titles by Kit Reed. Book Description

Krispos had held the throne of Videssos since he was scarcely more than a peasant youth. But now a strange heresy has taken root in the land, a hidden dissent that is flaring into open revolt. As Krispos leads his legions with his three sons, against the rebels, one son disappears into the rebel ranks. Then the renegades seize the day, and Krispos wages an ever more desperate war against an implacable foe that would not scruple to set brother against brother, father against son....

4 out of 5 stars Satisfying, but slow and dry in places.......2000-08-16

The Tale of Krispos series, is actually a two book set about young Krispos, followed by a stand-alone third book about a mature Krispos and his kids. The Tale of (young) Krispos begins with "Krispos Rising", and continues seamlessly with "Krispos of Videssos". This is a classic rags to riches story, perfectly done, with the added adventure of a sword and sorcery tale. The Tale of (mature) Krispos is continued in "Krispos the Emperor".

The spellbinding detail of the world of Videssos was painstakingly developed in the author's first series, The Videssos Cycle, beginning with "The Misplaced Legion". This is a story about elements of one of Caesar's legions travelling into Rome's future of the Byzantine Empire. Only it's not the real Byzantine Empire, it's a parallel universe where magic works. Aside from that, it's Byzantium written by a Byzantine historian. In his first series, Harry Turtledove is contrasting the vigor of an expanding Roman Empire under Caesar with the decadence of the Byzantine Empire in decline. In his Tale of Krispos series, he is contrasting the industrious work ethic of the rural peasants with the jaded debauchery of the Empire's noble elite. With 1000 years of Byzantine history at his command, the author is able to richly describe detailed colorful characters, places, and events in this series, the same way he did in the first. They all ring true, because they are based (sometimes loosely) upon real historical fact. The realism of Videssos is unsurpassed.

In the third Krispos book, the author moves on to explore two new themes: the differences between children and their parents, which is especially important in dynastic empires; and the difficulties of heresy in a single theology state. Krispos raised his children on his stories of growing up as a lowly peasant, but they remain the pampered sons of the richest most powerful man in the world. What is a father to do? At the same time that his family is giving him trouble, his people (one people, one faith, one nation) develop a particularly nasty heresy. It is his duty to exterminate it, root and branch.

This is possibly the most realistic novel Harry Turtledove has written yet, since every King and Emperor has had to face these worries about their children, and this particular heresy broke out more than once in both Greek Orthodox and Catholic Europe. I would say this is a must read for anyone with teenage children (or maybe for teenage children who have parents), and a must read for anyone with an intense interest in theology and how it affected the Greek Orthodox or Roman Catholic churches. Since I don't fit into any of these categories, I bumped it down to four stars. I really feel that this is not so much due to any inadequacies on the author's part, so much as inadequacies on my part as a reader.

5 out of 5 stars Please write a fourth book in this series, Mr. Turtledove!.......1998-08-24

The third book follows the lives of an aging Krispos and his three sons who are trying to reach adulthood. Dangerous religious fanatics are loose in Videssos during this adventure. Fanatics make very dedicated warriors, and make this book a truly compelling read.

I got this book as soon as it hit the shelfs, but, even though I found it to be very good, I didn't like the way some of it was worded. Also, some of it was changed. Although I would have loved to give it the 5 stars it should get, I don't like the way it left you hanging at the end. Instead of On The Run, there should have been a continuation of the first book. I don't care who says it, On The Run is not the continuation of Invasion America (The first book). But by now I'm not expecting a second to the book or the TV show(Which should be on tape by now!).

5 out of 5 stars GREAT! This book got me hooked on SciFi!.......1999-12-02

I had watched the T.V. show before I even knew about this book and it's to-be sequal. I really enjoyed the book, because it was MORE in detail. Me being a teenager myself, I felt a lot of the same emotion as the main character did when he found out about his past. This is one great book! (sorry if there is any bad spelling!)

          Book Description

The invasion of America was easy.

There were no amphibious landings; no paratroopers fell from the sky.

They numbered not in the thousands, but tens of thousands.

We worked with them, trusted them, loved them.

Behind their serene exteriors beat hearts filled with hatred. The death of every American, young and old, was their goal.

We made it easy for them.

“If you strike their cities, their strength will be exhausted and their spirits will break!”
          Sun-tzu, The Art of War

Ryker nodded to the members of the press standing before him, “Ladies and gentlemen, over the past forty-eight hours there have been four horrific and evil terrorist attacks conducted against the innocent members of this community and this country. These attacks have resulted in the deaths of one hundred and forty-seven American citizens, and that number will no doubt climb further, though we all hope and pray that it does not. The killers made no distinctions between man, woman or child. They attacked without provocation our homes, a place of worship and those among us who are the most vulnerable,” the crime scene photos from the group home still glaringly fresh in his mind. “I believe these targets were specifically chosen for the severe emotional impact they would wreak on us as a nation. The attacks were meant to rattle our state of mind and destroy faith in our way of life. We, as a people, must unite and refuse to allow that to happen.”

I have several books on rustic decorating and that type of thing. This book is one of my favorites. It's packed full of information, and acknowledges that the average person isn't going to be able to go out and furnish an entire house full of Bellinger paintings and antique Molesworth furniture. You will get a lot of ideas and have fun reading this book. But watch out...apparently this book is tasty for dogs, as my Bernese Mountain Dog loved it also! :-)

Filled cover-to-cover with full-color photographs of rustic items ranging from wood canisters with pinecone designs to vintage fishing calendars and lanterns, and much more, each collectible is succinctly described with identification and manufacture information as well as a recommended appraisal of its value. Nearly all the articles presented are quite economical, going for $25 to $75 or so. An excellent sourcebook, Cabin Style is enjoyable simply to page through for inspiration.

              5 out of 5 stars Cabin Collectibles.......2001-05-15

For more than two decades I have been involved in designing and decorating both residences and commercial facilities in the rustic style. I have lectured around the country in front of many different types of architectural and design organizations, written dozens of articles, several books and my home has appeared many times in magazines such as Country Living and others.

On a daily basis people from all around the country call me asking for basic information on both rustic accessories and rustic furnishings of all sorts.

In an attempt to answer many of the questions I proposed to one of my publishers, Gibbs Smith of Layton, Utah, that I do a small, inexpensive book that addressed many of the very basic questions people often ask about rustic collectibles. So in the fall of 2000 we can out with CABIN COLLECTIBLES.

Designed to answer basic questions about only a few of many items often used to decorate rustic settings the book has been very well received from the public as well as from professional reviewers including:

"Love this Book!" Beth Anderson, Log Home Illustrated

"A fascinating book!" Anne Gilbert, Charlotte Observer

The book sold out of its first edition immediately and was reprinted to meet a growing demand. I have been discussing with my publisher the possibility of Volume Two of Cabin Collectibles to offer further information on many of the other items that are often used to decorate rustic settings. At this time, however, I am completing two other large books on RUSTIC SETTINGS. One book will be out in August of 2002 and the other will be on the market a year later. Hopefully, a few years down the line Volume II of Cabin Collectibles will also be on the market. Please feel to contact me at ralphkylloe.com.

              1 out of 5 stars Rustic Rehash.......2001-03-28

If you are interested in the rustic or Adirondack style, you are no doubt already familiar with Ralph Kylloe, the author of several fine books related to this style. "Cabin Collectibles," Kylloe's latest offering, purports to offer "a broad overview of antique cabin collectibles." The photographs, taken by Kylloe, are beautiful, though many of the scenes depicted appeared previously in another of his books, "Rustic Style." The text, however, is disappointing. A chapter on canoes and paddles reads like a high school sophomore's report on the evolution of canoes in North America. Statements like: "The teardrop shapes of canoe paddles and the graceful, sensual, sweeping lines of canoes carry emotional overtones," and "Men's snowshoes tended to be larger than women's. Small snowshoes were also made for children," offer little insight to the would-be collector. Insipid statements like, "Human beings have an incredible propensity to collect things," regularly appear in the text and then, annoyingly, again as captions for photographs. While Kylloe offers a few gratuitous remarks on collecting, "You don't have to have 10,000 twig stands to fill every last corner of your house...," one could realistically expect something a bit more helpful from a person who boasts of collecting in less than two months "more than 350 pairs of antique skis and poles, 350 pairs of antique snowshoes, 200 fishing creels, 250 antique sleds, 200 antique camp signs, hundreds of old bamboo fly rods, and more rustic stuff than I can remember." The book's greatest shortcoming is its failure even to mention so many wonderful cabin collectibles: mounted birds and fish, paintings and prints of rural scenes and nature, camp blankets, fishing reels and rods, souvenir pennants, balsam pillows, and indian busts, to name but a few. While some of these items appear in the photographs, they are not mentioned in the text. If you are thinking about purchasing this book, don't. Get a better return for your money with "Adirondack Style, Cabin Fever, Inside Log Homes," or even Kylloe's "Rustic Style." Any one of these books offers better ideas on cabin collectibles.

              Book Description

Best-selling author and log home expert Robbin Obomsawin features the rustic and charming architecture of the Adirondack great camps of the Northeast in her newest book. Established during the early twentieth century by wealthy rail and oil barons such as the Vanderbilts and the Rockefellers, the Adirondack camps served as the preeminent playground for those who wanted to escape industrial city life and reconnect with nature. Today, these classic camps represent the best of rustic style.

3 out of 5 stars The Andirondack Camps & Mansions of Bygone Days........2006-09-03

In the late 19th century, the wealthy men who wanted to impress poured some of their money into large mansions like Biltmore Estate in Asheville, N.C., only in New York they opted for the "Adirondack style" with a rustic flavor. Floor plans for the cabins are included in this picture book complete with the history of this area. Later they were turned into camps for rich kids. Some of these camps such as Santanoni were operating for one hundred years, from 1850 to 1950. Only a few survive today.

Resort hotels sprang up during that era as retreats to nature from the environs of New York City. Hotel Champlain and Sagamore resorts for the luxury and culture of a period in U. S. history of radical change, are still operating. In Giles County in Middle Tennessee, we have such a place called the Milky Way Farm. Not much of the farm is intact, as parcels were sold to people who desired to live there, not to investors. However, the intriguing home built in the center of the property by the Mars family used local labor and is still open and splendid, inside and out. It has passed from mostly spectulators trying for a bed and breakfast or some such money-making operation. Some rooms are decorated in the style of the times using the original furnishings. The outside stone horse barns ahve disappeared, but the stone fences surrounding the fields leading up to the house which were built by the WPA workers, are still visible. The dining room used for special events has a round table built in that room, as it is too large to get through any of the doors. I ate there when Vo-Tech hosted a supper for public officials and the school's teachers and staff. I was part of the staff at that time. In New York, they are seen as relics of a bygone world of the super-rich. Built by and for the Rockefellers, Astors, Roosevelts, Vanderbilts, etc. who needed to escape the industrial city life and reconnect with nature. Now, there are million dollar homes there.

Santanoni is located hihg up in the peaks of the Adirondacks Mountains. The expanse is impressive and includes 12,500 acres in Newcomb. The main lodge build with a Japanese temple effect still shows the grandeur of the past as lived by the rich and famous.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty, Terrific Photos, but a Little Bland Here and There.......2006-03-23

I mostly buy more practical Adk books, but I thought it would be nice to have something more glossy ... a coffee-table type book for fun. I have to give the author major praise for including a great variety of camps/cabins, all the way from big, million-dollar homes down to tiny one-roomers. (There is even a section called "Small Gems," which is what I want to build, so I was very happy.) It is, I should also say, a beautiful book. Fabulous photos. I got lots of ideas about authentic Adk architectural touches, types of siding, interior ideas, etc. And I really appreciated that I didn't feel "outclassed," that it wasn't a book full of mansions. The text is pretty random, but all the same, I'm glad I bought it.

3 out of 5 stars Lots of Adirondack history but- - -.......2005-06-07

I feel that Robin Obomsawin did a much better job with her previous books by adding alot more pictures of the insides of the homes she wrote about. I was sadly disappointed that there were not more pictures of Adirondack homes. I have been very happy with her other books because of the beautiful pictures taken on the interiors, but this book was lacking in pictures of just that- interiors. I really looked forward to this book being released and bought it "sight unseen" and was deeply let down that inside the book, it lacked more pictures of cozy cabin retreats, showcasing all the rooms and decorating where I get my inspirations and ideas from. The author was very clear and informative on the adirondack history though and the building materials used on these types of houses.

Following the effective formula she established in her classic memoir Nothing to Declare, Mary Morris mingles travel in an exotic landscape--well, Southern California is exotic if you're from New York City by way of suburban Chicago--with memories of a troubled past and a frank description of current personal difficulties. In Angels & Aliens, Morris moves to Orange County in 1988 with her infant daughter, Kate, whose father has remained behind on the East Coast, unwilling either to marry Morris or let her go. As is often the case with one-sided accounts of relationships on the rocks, it's hard to imagine what the author sees in her selfish, controlling lover; most readers will cheer when she finally forces him to lay his emotional and financial cards on the table. Her account of life in La-La Land has predictable moments (freeway driving as existential statement, crystal-wielding massage therapists), but Morris is surprisingly nonjudgmental about oddball cults like the Crystal Cathedral, which flies six parishioners/angels overhead in its annual Christmas pageant, and Uforum, which runs a support group for people convinced they have been abducted by aliens. No matter how strange the behavior, Morris's sharp, stripped-down language makes it recognizably human. --Wendy Smith

                                    Book Description

Angels & Aliens is Mary Morris's long-awaited memoir, confirming her status as a master of the genre.

In Angels & Aliens, Mary Morris once again explores her experiences as a woman on the road, this time as a single parent, wandering with her daughter through Southern California and struggling to make it on her own. Posing as a believer, Morris infiltrates New Age groups, flies as an angel through the Crystal Cathedral, and becomes a member of the earth-based unit of the Ashtar command.

As her relationship with her baby's father unravels and she is confronted with personal and financial setbacks, Morris tries to understand how other people cope with their lives, and places these systems of coping withing the broader context of American culture.

Written with humor and hope, this travel memoir is both a life-affirming story of one woman's journey through the emotional terrain of the heart, and a clear-eyed journalist's account of the true nature of California as a state of exodus, home to sun seekers, spiritual believers, and cults. Combining her gift as a story teller, which is apparent in her fiction, and the powerful sense of place she brings to her nonfiction, Morris gives us a traveler's tale for the millennium when there's no place to go but up.

1 out of 5 stars Boring, pretentious drivel about covers it...........2007-09-04

I really wanted to like this book.

I love California and it sounded interesting from the blurb, like a spiritual quest, but I have to admit that within a few chapters I was honestly bored silly. So much so I practically had to make myself finish the book.

In reading her words I have found nothing that inspires any real sympathy or liking for this author. On the contrary, while the prose is well-written it truly lacks in the way of content.

Mary Morris talks about being desperately "poor" but thinks nothing of asking her folks to contribute towards the cost of a live-in nanny. She makes a couple of trips to Vegas, and other places over the course of the book, dropping a "couple hundred" without thought, uses her credit card pretty liberally and yet she claims that getting $50 a week in childcare would make a HUGE difference in her lifestyle.

Poor pitiful me, the tale says, but you know I just don't see the sacrificing going on here. If she's not doing Vegas, she's off to the new age massage therapist, et all. If you ask me it's NO WONDER she's always broke at the end of the month, sheesh...

As for the rest of the situation. Morris thinks nothing of being her lover's "other woman" for several years, but then faults him for simply being the very non-committal person she got involved with in the first place? Not that the man isn't a two-timing deadbeat, but what does she expect that he will be faithful to HER, the perfect parent to HER child, when it's obvious he couldn't be faithful to his first wife or a particularly good parent to his first set of kids?

It's nice that she finally found a better relationship situation and a decent guy to love her and her child but in all honesty while reading her book I had a really hard time believing either she or her lover were mature enough to be have been raising a baby at that particular junction in their lives.

In this book the author comes off as very self-involved, often shallow, and frankly a bit self-serving towards the end.

                                    Harsh words?

Maybe, but that's honestly what I got while reading this one.

Every now and again I have to admit that I read a book and I have to wonder exactly why it's considered fit to be published.

This is definitely one of those books.

The editor who wrote the check for this narcissistic drivel?

Should be reduced to flipping burgers about now, IMHO...

3 out of 5 stars odds and ends bin of a book.......2002-02-25

This book to me seemed to combine all the loose odds and ends from the rest of Mary Morris' writing. Granted, I read it after reading five or six of her other books, so I was able to recognize where she transformed autobiography into fiction, but in a lot of cases the fiction was better written. The overarching theme of "Angels and Aliens" of being a single mother, involved in a neither-here-nor-there with a man who won't take responsibility is the center of her novel "The Night Sky," her meditations on the places she is traversing are more organic and poignant in her other memoir, "Nothing To Declare," detailing her journey through South America. Her flashbacks to her childhood in a privileged Chicago suburb and the family tensions that lurked beneath the perfect Midwestern front are the basis for "Acts of God," her best novel IMHO. The problem with this book is that it is too unstructured, it does not flow, and although it is engrossing to some degree, because she has an interesting voice and a way with words, and does make the reader invested, I would suggest pretty much all of her other work before this book.

4 out of 5 stars Moving on and up; a woman's personal fulfillment.......2001-06-02

It takes a brutally honest author, as Mary Morris is, and has done, to admit what she did for love. The sacrifices Mary made on behalf of her lover and father of her baby is basically the spinal cord for the novel. Her search for life's meanings and attempts to reconnect to a world so devoid of personal responsibility by this man open up painful recollections, yet serves as a foundation to offer her fresh experiences and rich sources of humor and honesty which are skillfully revealed.

Let me say right off that this is not just another "man bashing novel". It would be truly unfortunate for a reader to be unable or unwilling to see beyond the appalling behavior of her partner and not appreciate how brave she is to allow this information to be shared. The fact that he is professionally influential is a sad reflection on the perception of the public.

Personally he is manipulative and deceptive, or, also known as "married with children." Providing for his "first" family and their priorities, he makes promises AND children (not by his first wife, obviously) he can not and will not keep. Do not ask him for his time, he has "too many commitments". Electing to buy an expensive pure bred puppy to give as a present to his legitimite son, he sends ROSES for his and Mary's daughter's first birthday. Never a cent to feed, clothe or care take her, he neglects all responsibility for his fatherhood. Left to babysit for only one hour, he forgets where the baby is in favor of a televised ball game. When confronted by Mary, wakened and shocked into an incredulously terrified alertness , he notices the baby poised at the electric socket, her little finger wet and ready to probe. He is, however, unwilling to divert his attention from the TV. Obviously relieved that mom has come to HIS rescue, he returns to the game oblivious to the consequences of his behavior.

The attraction of this novel is, therefore, dependent on Mary's awakening. The pages will turn rapidly with anticipation and your senses will be alert, preparing for all possibilities. It is difficult not to relate, she effectively taps into so many facets of complicated relationships. The need to protect her child is life altering and she finds the strength to make the decisions that must be made. With an inquisitive nature, she allows herself to examine alternate beliefs and applications with a sense of humor and reasonable doubt. Willing to admit to her own faults, her history is offered with no apologies and some outright laughs. A traveler memoir author, her trip to the west coast with her baby daughter reads like a novel. True to the spirit of the west the angels and aliens were her companions along the way.

                                    2 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Time!.......2000-10-06

Having read Morris's "Nothing to Declare," I looked forward to reading this book. I can only imagine that Morris had to make some quick money and resorted to publishing this trivia. There is very little about the New Age community in California or New Age beliefs. There is very little in this book other than what goes on inside of Morris's own head. And it's mostly whining, complaining and feeling sorry for herself-- as well as the tedious minutia of raising her daughter and everyday traffic tie ups on the LA freeway. She goes so far as to spend a paragraph telling us she had to go to the store to buy Pampers for her baby. PLEASE!! What happened just prior to this memoir is that Morris got pregnant by her boyfriend, who turned out to be a selfish jerk who wouldn't marry her. So if you buy and read this book, be prepared for page after page of --Poor me, starving writer, how will I feed and take care of my baby. Babies have to eat. Babies have to be changed. Babies cry and need my attention so I can't write my books!-- We know that, Mary. Now write us a book that takes us to a place other than your baby's dirty diapers!

5 out of 5 stars A Very Creative Approach to Memoir Writing.......2000-06-25

The "travel" part of this travel-memoir is all internal. And that is well since the inner journey is the most important part of any travel. Morris' roller-coaster ride through motherhood and a blighted relationship is brilliantly portrayed without the syrupy sentimentality that usually occurs in this genre. She is brutally honest about herself, and yet one can not help but understand her plight and feel her pains. She openly admits her shortcomings and I found this very heartening because that is the one thing many writers can not achieve--self honesty at the cost of ego.

Her prose is startlingly simple and deceptively profound. The whole thing really is about a year in the life of a very lonely woman, struggling to make a life for herself and finding her soul. The sidekick storyline about the counter cultures of New Age hippies and alien cults is really just that: a supporting structure, something to weave into her own story and provide a reflective surface for herself. This book is no academic exploration of the wacky side of Southern California living. It is a very tender look at one life.

It seems that Morris did find a happy ending to her story although it is unfortunate that she did not elaborate on how it came about. I think there are many secrets to happiness and wish that Morris would have shared a bit more of her discovery. But, then again, maybe that's the thing about artists in general: they are destined to leave us wanting more.

This is no conventional travelogue or memoir. It breaks new grounds. And we should applaud the author for that.
