For Angela Davis Brown, the heroine of Veronica Chambers's debut novel, When Did You Stop Loving Me, life can be divided into two parts: before and after her mother disappears on an otherwise ordinary day in 1979. Left in the care of her father, a magician who drives a Mercedes yet can't afford much more than an omelet or two a day, Angela must navigate the waters of young womanhood on her own, save the occasional appearance of her father's numerous girlfriends or her abusive Aunt Mona. Along the way, this precocious sixth-grader must grapple with the inevitable yet unanswerable need to understand how a mother could abandon her child to seek fame and fortune in Hollywood, to Angela a place a world away from Brooklyn.

Chambers paints a vivid image of the political and socio-economic climate of New York in the early 1980s. The most entertaining and heartfelt scenes of this novel come when Angela describes her parents riveting admiration for Assata Shakur's escape from prison, or her father's sense of pure joy at meeting Muhammad Ali after performing at a PBS telethon to benefit the United Negro College Fund. Where the author falls short is in capturing the essence of Angela's grief; at no point does the reader feel any true investment in Angela's emotional or mental fate. Insincere lines like "My father was a magician, but Mommy was the real Houdini" do little to align the reader with this young girl's plight. Even at the end, when Chambers offers us a glimpse of Angela's adulthood, we feel no attachment to the character, no sense of triumph in her achievements and accomplishments. In fact, it is easier to identify with Teddo, Angela's proud, stubborn father, simply because he seems more genuine. His anger and grief at his wife's disappearance are palpable ("…He knelt down beside me and rested his head on my lap. His head shook and my hands trembled. I tried to still him. He cried so long that the legs of my pajamas were wet through.") while Angela's pain seems contrived and detached.

When Did You Stop Loving Me is a noble first effort, but Chambers, who has achieved success as a journalist and a critic, would benefit from abandoning clichés in favor of deeper character exploration. --Gisele Toueg

Book Description

A dazzling literary debut about a young girl and her father, a magician whose tricks and illusions both ease and hinder the painful realities of their lives

WHEN DID YOU STOP LOVING ME is the warm and tender story of Angela, a young girl growing up in 1970s Brooklyn. One day Angela goes to school and returns home to find her mother gone. Her magician father, Teddo, left to raise Angela alone, insists on keeping Melanie’s disappearance shrouded in mystery, but later Angela wryly observes, “My father was a magician, but my mother was the real Houdini.”

Veronica Chambers has written a compelling story about a young girl’s struggle to navigate her way through her family’s web of love, loss, and magic. As Angela tries to piece her world back together and figure out why her mother has abandoned her, she’s left to ponder the soul-shattering question: When did you stop loving me?

A universal story that is both finely-tuned and elegant, WHEN DID YOU STOP LOVING ME captures the intricacies, pleasures, contradictions, and complexities at the heart of every family. Spare and finely told, this novel will seep beneath your skin and stay with you long after the last page has been turned.

3 out of 5 stars decent quick read..could have been better.......2006-08-19

Interesting story line, but at times it was a bit verbose.I tried to stay focused, but the author did not draw her audience in with enough depth with these charecters. the ending could have been alot better. Sorry, but I started getting bored near the last few chapters and just wanted it to end so that I could move on to another book.

1 out of 5 stars How did this get published?.......2005-12-03

Rather than summarize the plot (since Amazon does that rather nicely for you), I'll skip right to my not-so-subtle nudge away from this book. Not only is the plot a rather long cliche, the quality of the writing itself is incredibly poor; I'm somewhat amazed that the book actually got published. Not to break copyright, but since she quoted it on her own website, I see no harm in sharing that the book actually contains the phrase "It was 1979 and escape was heavy in the air." Somehow, that sentence just embodies for me the fatal flaw with the book: the complete inability to tell the truth.

Everything must be romantasized, dramatized, oversized; nothing is allowed to have a subtle effect but instead must be the most massive, most crushing, most over-the-top possible event in the life of the main character. For the antithesis, see Richard Ford's Independence Day as a reference on how to be honest in writing. For something equally terrible, see The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kid (should this book ever become as famous, I predict it will recieve roughly similiar reviews: "Honey of a book" from people who think that being told something is good means it actually is, "Hard to swallow, even with a spoonful of honey" from people who realize that having a plot with intentions is, in fact, a good thing).

5 out of 5 stars Great work of literature.......2005-09-09

I enjoyed this book from cover to cover. I liked the references to X-Men and other comics. Although the cartoon series was shown in the early 90s, this book shows that the comic originated in the early 1960s. The book ends and allows the reader to wonder about the future of the character as any good work of literature should. Ms. Chambers did her thing with her 2nd novel and I encourage readers to pick up her 1st, Mama's Girl.

4 out of 5 stars A page-turner.......2005-08-09

Ms. Chambers perfectly captures the voice of her young
heroine and deftly re-creates the sensory experience
that was New York City in 1979. I was there the first
time around, and this book took me right back in a way
that no other books, tv shows, movies have been able to
do.

This is a wonderfully engaging story that is
definitely a page-turner. Bravo, Veronica!

5 out of 5 stars A good read!.......2005-05-18

I really enjoy black novels set in the 60's and 70's era, you don't have to worry about all the explicit language. I thought the story was good- Angela comes home to find her mother that she loved gone. Angela and her father try to make it through life without her. This is just a great story between a girl and her father. I loved it, can't wait to read more books by this author.

Book Description

“I think Ralph fell in love with the uphillness in me. I could keep up with him on windy passes and minor climbing peaks. But I never stayed with him on the downhill. He was always too fast. He’d wait patiently for me at the bottom of a black diamond run, at the end of a long, winding mountain road, or at the foot of a crag. He was happy when I could get to the bottom of anything. I wasn’t with him the day he had the accident that left him a C-4 quadriplegic. Perhaps it’s the uphillness in me that is keeping me with him now. It’s all uphill from here. No more downhills to carve through gracefully or sail down safely; only up, up, up.” —from the Introduction

Suzy Parker and her husband, Ralph Hager, spent every free moment together biking, skiing, and hiking. All that changed in a split second when a freak cycling accident left Ralph permanently paralyzed below the shoulders. In that moment, Suzy’s old life fell away and her new one began. In Tumbling After, Suzy chronicles her transformation from carefree outdoorswoman to full-time caregiver, and paints a loving portrait of the impromptu, oddball family of concerned neighbors and friends who become her new lifeline. With Jerry, the tender ex-con; Momma Scott, a guardian angel and force of nature in a feather boa; and Harka, the culture-shocked Nepalese, at their side, Suzy and Ralph weather the loss of old friends and learn to embrace a new way of life with hope and a healing dose of the absurd.

This astonishing memoir, devoid of self-pity and told with breathtaking candor and a wry sense of humor, is an inspiring journey that is ultimately a story of survival and second chances—and the unexpected joy and love that can grow out of grief if given the slightest encouragement.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Monotonous and Overrated.......2005-05-20

I disagree with many of the reviews. I found the tone of the book to be somewhat self-pitying and monotonous. Strangely, the only review here I seem to agree with was written below by the wife of another quadiplegic.

The most interesting aspect about this topic, the devastating accident and its immediate aftermath, are glossed over quickly in the first few pages. The remainder of the book is the author going, "Woe is me, look how my life has deteriorated." Don't get me wrong, I don't think I could have handled what she went through, but the book makes the wife more of a victim than the husband.

There is nothing in the book about the husband's initial reaction to waking up and learning he was paralyzed after such an active life; virtually nothing about how he coped with the injury psychologically.

One problem with this book is that the author tells the whole story from the standpoint of me, me, me. I understand how hard her life must have become in the wake of her husband's devastating accident, but I had a real problem with the fact that, according to the book, for the most part, the author parked her formerly active husband in the living room in front of the television like a potted plant and pretty much left him there.

There is very little interaction described between the author and her disabled husband. The author goes on and on about how wonderful her husband's caretakers are, but treats the quadriplegic husband as a two dimensional burden. For example, Ms. Parker will describe in great detail some conversation or interaction she had with one of her husband's attendants, and then she throws in something like, "and we gave Ralph a sleeping pill, emptied his urine bag, put him to bed, and then [the attendant] took me upstairs and made love to me tenderly." I am no prude, and I understand the woman has needs, but I found the whole thing horrifying and insensitive.

She parks the husband in a hospital bed in the living room, and then spends the next few years sharing a bed and sex life upstairs with his 60-year old care attendant. When the husband says he does not want to know how she satisfies herself sexually, she tells him anyway, saying telling him would make HER feel better. Who knows how the poor husband felt. He could hardly complain, since he is helpless without both the wife and the attendant.

She says her old friends and life "dropped away," after the accident, leaving as her only social life, an odd assortment of lovable misfits that took care of her husband. The book gives the impression that, if one is rendered disabled, their only social life is going to be with their ex-con, ex-drug addict hired attendant [who also services the author sexually for years] and assorted neighbors.

I did not find the book uplifing. I found it completely depressing. Usually when I love a book, I am sad when I finish it. This one I was glad to put down. If you want an inspiring book by or about dealing with quadriplegia and its aftermath, I highly recommend "Eleven Seconds" by Travis Roy [the former hockey player]; "Still Me," by Christopher Reeve; or "Miracles Happen" by Brooke and Jean Ellison.

5 out of 5 stars Susan, keep up the good work please........2003-05-25

I am sorry it took me so long to discover this book. I have been a fan of Ms. Parker since I first began reading her columns in the SF Chronicle. This book is one of those you want to read slowly so that it lasts longer but find you can't put it down. Susan has a wonderful knack for untainted honesty as she reports on the universal joys and sorrows of human life. She guides the reader into her world without trying to assign blame or seek justification, a truly refreshing approach in this day and age. Can't wait for the sequel! -Cindy

1 out of 5 stars Another Quad Wife Speaks.......2002-11-19

As the wife of a quadriplegic I was very interested to see what Susan Parker had to say about her life. The description of the devastation, hopelessness and helplessness women feel when they come into this situation was excellent. The potrayal of the feeling of being totally overwhelmed and burned out by the intensity of it all was very real to me.

This is where the excellence of the book ended. It was extremely redundant, telling almost the same story over and over with a slightly different twist. I was quickly bored. It was obvious that it was a collection of short antecdotes written for her newspaper column and not a cohesive book. I was determined to finish it and was only able to tough it out to the end because of the perseverence I've learned from being a Quad Wife.

It was appalling to read that her husband is kept a virtual prisoner in the living room of the house they live in. No adaptations have been made since 1994 to make the rest of the home accessible to him? He has a life of watching TV? What is that all about?

I am also wondering why a woman who says she is intelligent did not seek out the available programs which provide excellent, in home assistance to people with disabilities. Had she taken advantage of such programs, both she and her husband would have much improved lives.

5 out of 5 stars Worldview Changing and Hilarious.......2002-08-21

I picked this book up with about 15 others from the new non-fiction section at my library in preparation vacation reading. I got through my entire selection, but this is the one book that, in a truly meaningful way, became part of my consciousness. I then had the opportunity to choose a book for my bookclub, and it was a no-brainer: Tumbling After. I think the book just speaks to a place in one's heart.

Although at times I wanted to shake Suzy Parker, there was never a time in the book where I couldn't relate in some way to her. Since none of us know what lies ahead in life, we can all imagine ourselves in Suzy Parker's shoes, and I would hope that I would handle any situation of the same magnitude with similar grace, honesty, and humanity. When white, middle class Suzy finds herself in the position of forming a "new family" with folks whose background and lifestyle were formerly not even on her radar, it proves beyond doubt that "love is thicker than blood". She faces up to her biases very bravely, and finds true friendship and camraderie.

Lastly, but just as importantly, I laughed hysterically throughout, which was hard to explain to family members who inquired of the subject matter of such an apparently funny book (quadraplegia? - huh?). But I just loved Suzy Parker's soul.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Deal.......2002-05-31

I saw Suzy Parker at a book reading in Seattle and she said, "One thing you learn being in the disabled community is that there is always someone worse off than you." And she shows us some of these people--with a clear eye and a sense of humor. What I really love about her story is its truth. There is no self-pity. Even when she says "this [stinks], I wonder if I can make," she just plows ahead.

The story is accessible and never maudlin even when it is grim. And there is plenty of humor and adventure to pull the reader through the tight little chapters.

This story is the real deal--a great read, a compelling story, and a few lessons along the way.

3 out of 5 stars The Cosmic Do-Over.......2006-04-12

Paul Witcover has created an incredibly ambitious story here, but his big thoughts and philosophical themes have crushed and scattered his plot elements. Most of this book switches back and forth between two parallel storylines, with the connections between the two becoming either clearer or murkier as the book rumbles along. First is a coming-of-age story about a boy named Jack and his nearly superhuman relationship with his twin sister Jilly. One or both of the twins possesses powers that can alter reality in confusing and mystifying ways. The other storyline involves a parallel Earth, on which various mutants ("Mutes") battle with standard humans ("Norms") after a biological war. What these two threads have in common is that Jack and Jilly like to play a role-playing game featuring the Mutes and Norms. In a very interesting twist from Witcover, the Mutes in their parallel universe follow a logical religion called Probability Theology, believing that their lives are controlled totally by the odds. But this might just be Jack's rolls of the dice. Meanwhile, a Mute named Kestrel, also coming of age, may be influencing Jack's life in the opposite direction.

While these are outstandingly creative aspects of speculative fiction from Witcover, unfortunately it doesn't all add up to a satisfying or believable storyline. Witcover leaves the connections between the two worlds, and between Jack and Kestrel, vague and surreal. This may be a strategy to invoke speculation in the reader, but other readers will be disillusioned with the many loose ends. Meanwhile, the deep soulful relationship between Jack and Jilly becomes increasingly ugly and dysfunctional, which is disappointing for characters that were so likable earlier. Overall, Witcover's prose is very repetitive and verbose, especially when discussing the story's multiple threads of reality, and the end of the book collapses into interminable deep thoughts and windy philosophical explorations. And in the end, this story doesn't really end but comes back around to its own beginning, and upon reflection the reader will find that in linear form the resolution to the story is unhappy and unsatisfying. 5 out of 5 stars A refreshing glass of beer for the thirsty spec fic fan.......2005-04-25

Paul Witcover's reality bending tale is a period piece, the period being adolescence. The primary and secondary worlds are connected via Uncle Jimmy's role playing game, itself a fusion of reality, the online world, tech creep, Big Brother, global media, and conflict. This story of Jack and Jilly Doone could work for any generation, but is thankfully written for mine. Witcover blends themes of pre-adolescent and adolsecent coming of age, and of self discovery, in two separate (or are they?) realities. He artfully interlaces humor and detail in his unique, wryly twisted brand of narrative. Why is the book so refreshing? You can't predict what is beyond the borders of the next page, and the story is both surprising and fulfilling without succumbing to phone book dimensions. Thank you, Mr Witcover, for a well brewed story. You will hopefully have driven many down the road to read speculative fiction, and at least *someone* has written to thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Witcover does it again........2005-04-22

Paul Witcover, author of the fantasy cult masterpiece Waking Beauty, is back and none too soon.

Literarily, his new novel, Tumbling After, plows new ground as well as some that has been left fallow for too many years. Creative use of tense to demonstrate the ambiance of moments as well as to frame the swirling temporal context, deep psychology of the characters, hot live action and interplay of plural realities are so deftly interwoven as to be seamless.

Absorbing, I read it straight through as I did not want to put it down. I have, however, revisited it more than once to study how he pulls some of this off. Science fiction and fantasy readers -- gamers in particular -- should be entertained and delighted, but the significance and appeal of this work is not limited by those parameters.

Kudos.

5 out of 5 stars A dark, human SF/fantasy hybrid .......2005-03-16

I have never read Paul Witcover's first novel, the criminally out-of-print Waking Beauty (1997), but his recently published, brilliant second novel, Tumbling After (2005), has been way overdue. One can only hope Mr. Witcover starts churning out work at a faster rate.

Or maybe, considering the perfection in the measured prose and economical storytelling of Tumbling After, we should forgive Witcover his languid writing pace and, in fact, be thankful for the time and attention he gives his stories . Because, in its own way, Tumbling After is a perfect coming-of-age, SF/fantasy novel by an author who seems to have achieved everything he's set out to. The fat has been trimmed, leaving a sharp, dangerous narrative that is quite an emotional ride for the reader.

Still, it may not be a perfect book for every reader. Even for me, the story could have used a bit of occasional levity. But by the last page I could not help but deeply admire Witcover's obsessive vision of twins, parallel worlds, and odds. And, though some may get turned off by Witcover's SF elements, it's the small touches of humanity in his characters that will get them through, and the palpable pain that exudes from these pages: the twist of a nipple, the butting of a head on a nose. The fear of being alone.

4 out of 5 stars "There will be betrayal; faith will be broken".......2005-03-05

I am always looking for fantasy novels that "break the mold", since sometimes I get tired of the same story getting told over and over again, with different characters and in slightly different settings. Of course there are several authors out there that provide original works, like George R.R. Martin or Jennifer Fallon. Now I have to add Paul Witcover to the list. In this novel, he uses a very interesting idea that comes close to alternate fiction in the sense that we find ourselves asking the "what if?" question.

Jack and Jill are twins that spend their summers in Middlesex Beach, Delaware. They share a special connection, and are aware of the feelings of each other without talking. At night, they get together with their uncle and sometimes other members of the family to play a role-playing game created by Uncle Jimmy. The game follows the style of Dungeons & Dragons and is called Mutes & Norms. On a different world, we meet Kestrel, who is an airie, one of the mutant races that, as the name suggests, shares some of its characteristics with the birds. The five races of mutes were the result of the Viral Wars, and since that moment they have been preparing themselves to confront the human race and destroy it (it is interesting to know that the humans are the bad guys here).

Witcover does a very good job in alternating the action between Kestrel's and Jack's worlds, and after Jack is the victim of an accident on the beach that nearly cost him his life, something in him changes and we start seeing a connection between the two worlds. While Jack and his family play the games in our world, Kestrel and the rest of the mutes determine which path to follow on theirs according to the roll of the dice. Based on this premise, the story goes on and we find ourselves delving into a complicated plot that has not only parallel worlds, but that also leaps back and forth in time. That is why I recommend that those that like linear stories consider this aspect very seriously before deciding if they want to read the book.

Even though the author uses several novel concepts, he also falls into some trite concepts and ideas. For example, Kestrel is part of a pentad, which is a group formed by one mute from each of the five races that go together on a journey. Of course, this idea has been used by many authors in different variations, but most notably by Tolkien when he forms the Fellowship of the Ring in his masterpiece "The Lord of the Rings". Overall, I would say that this is a very original work though, and one that has led me to search for the author's first novel and to be willing to read his next one too. In the final words just a warning, the author presents the topic of incest in the book, and even though this is done in a tactful way, some people may feel uncomfortable.

                  Book Description

                  How much is enough?

Why does it seem we are always looking for more? In her wonderfully unique style, author Mary Ellen Edmunds suggests that You Can Never Get Enough of What You Don't Need because what you don't need never satisfies. "I can have a house filled with stuff and things, but if it's not what I need, it will never satisfy me, no matter how much I have," she observes. Have you noticed that the happiness we equate with abundance often eludes both those who get what they want in life and those who don't? This eye-opening treasure hunt of a book will help you find the secret to living with contentment.

MEE (Mary Ellen Edmunds) writes as she speaks. Her openness, and her straightforward and playful manner shine through. It makes the book immensely readable. Far more than "how to unclutter," it gets to the heart of the matter--being content with less stuff; reaching for fulfillment in ways that will see you through to that goal.

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative Tea Book.......2000-06-18

I read this book cover to cover and found it to be a GREAT tea book! Although it covers a broad range of tea topics, it covers each of them very well. I usually don't like history but found the author's descriptions and stories of what happened long ago fascinating. I have re-read them many times, each time learning somethings new. Mr. Pratt provides a Chronology of Tea Fortunes in the back of the book which is an extremely valuable reference, helping me keep track of what happened when. The author covers many other tea subjects, too, including types of tea, tea trade, tea things, etc. but doesn't use recipes to fill up the pages. It is all very informative. The only thing that could have made the book better is a more up-to-date reference list in the back. Most of the books listed here are out of print.

I have also read the New Tea Lover's Treasury by the same author but found the "old" one to be a better value. There isn't much additional information in the new book and a lot of good stuff in the old version was omitted. For example, the chronology (historic time line) is completely omitted as is the coverage of the tea trade. The Bibliography of Tea Books in the new edition is more extensive, but here again most of the books listed are out of print.

This is primarily a book on the story of tea. The history is fascinating and invaluable to the avid tea drinker. More than half the book Pratt dedicates to tea history. Here, I love his eye for the little things that count.
Following this, the author describes the various teas throughout the world. This is more than just a list, but a detailed look at the regions that produce them, the technique and conditions that impart their unique characteristics.
Part three concludes with the author's own advice on tea preparation, and a consise but adequate discourse on tea ritual.
After reading this book my respect and adoration for tea skyrocketed yet again (see "The Tea Lover's Companion"). Most importantly, my enjoyment of tea drinking has increased after reading this book. That alone makes this book priceless.

As any urbanite can attest, it is often those inspired instances of architectural ornamentation--on facades, rooflines, doors, windows, and relief work--that can bring a dull gray cityscape to life. Many of the ornaments gracing historic New York buildings are made of glazed terra cotta, which has been an integral (though largely overlooked) part of America's architectural legacy for more than a century, particularly in the art deco period. This volume, which is firmly on the side of preservation rather than demolition, reveals and celebrates the splendor of those architectural treasures. Offering a fascinating history, the book chronicles the development of terra-cotta ornamentation from the artisans of the late 19th century, to the revival the medium is enjoying today both in restoration projects and in new construction, to the efforts of preservationists to save this threatened aspect of architectural history. Also included is a detailed listing of 200 significant terra-cotta buildings in New York City.

                                      Book Description

Any city walker knows the delight that a flash of colorful ornament can bestow on an otherwise gray promenade. More often than not, these glazed splashes of color are made of terra cotta, which, for more than 100 years, has been an integralÃ`but largely unknownÃ`part of America's architectural legacy. Beginning in the nineteenth century, peaking in the Art Deco period, and enjoying a renaissance today, terra cotta has been used to ornament facades, rooflines, doors, and windows and create many of the most famous and fanciful architectural reliefs.?

?Terra-Cotta Skyline presents the history, manufacture, and art of architectural terra cotta through documents, drawings, archival photographs, and brilliant new color images commissioned exclusively for this book. Also included is a catalog of 200 extant terra-cotta buildings in New York, as well as directories of terra-cotta manufacturers and preservation organizations.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Terra-Cotta Skyline.......2007-01-09

This is a fantastic book on this historic building material. The author, Susan Tunick has provided the definitive work on this subject, covering all aspects of history, manufacturing and ultimately a gorgeous collection of photographs of terra cotta buildings.

                                      4 out of 5 stars Such a simple material...........2000-10-04

Terra-Cotta Skyline provides the reader with a very competent overview of the history of architectural terra cotta, the base material and techniques, the companies involved, and the buildings themselves. The photographs of buildings are almost exclusively of New York City buildings, but the archive materials dealing with the history of the trade covers the country. I found this book to be a fine blend of information and illustration. The bibliography, partial listing of significant buildings in NYC, and the list of former companies are wonderfull source materials. My major complaint with the book is that it deals primarily with the history of the trade. I wish that more time had been spent with modern techniques, with more photographs of same. I do admit to being prejudiced however,as I am a finisher of terra cotta, working with one of the two remaining producers of this product in the USA. Perhaps current restoration/new buildings would be material for a another book. If Susan Tunick writes it, I would buy it, as she really knows her stuff.

From a book of this size and price, I expected more. Cervin Robinson's paperback book "Skyscraper Style" has better pictures of many same buildings. Too bad there isn't more info about terra-cotta across the country. Some of the best is out here in the Southwest. Just because most books are published in New York, do they mostly have to be about New York?

                                        Product Description

Meet Mary-Margareht Rose and fall in love with this playful pixie-like lady, who has become one of Sedona's most celebrated healers. No one could have been more surprised than Mary-Margareht-Rose herself when she accidentally stumbled upon her extraordinary healing gifts. As a shy little Jewish-Italian girl from California, she was abused and made to feel insecure. As an adult, she had to search for her place on a planet that had not yet acknowledged the healing power of the God Source. Physic healing was relegated to the realm of "gypsy fortune tellers" and meditation was for yogi's on a mountaintop. This book is rich with teachings and anecdotes delivered with humor and humanness, by a woman who followed her heart and learned to listen to her inner voice; in the process, transforming every obstacle into an opportunity to test her courage to manifest her true identity.

5 out of 5 stars Midwest Book Review.......2004-04-08

From childhood on, Mary-Margareht Rose knew she was different. God blessed her with healing gifts that would take half a lifetime to reach fruition. Because of her gifts, the author has lost companionship with family members and friends. Some considered her a crackpot at the least. Others accused her of doing "the devil's work." These are losses she grieves, yet must accept for the greater good of those who need her.

Because she believed that all good and perfect gifts are of God, Ms. Rose persevered and embraced his healing spirit. It takes tremendous courage to say what you mean and stand behind it. This is especially true in a society that oftentimes fears or reviles what they cannot see or touch. Still, the author stands her ground and applies her gifts of healing in a suffering world.

Mary-Margareht Rose believes that humans are not simply inconsequential specks of dust, that we hold great importance in the universe. At her side through every healing are powerful Ascended Masters: Christ of Nazareth, his Mother Mary and Father Joseph, and beneficent extraterrestrial beings. I mention here only a few of her well documented successes:
                                        she understands the root causes of physical and psychic pain;
                                        she has gained enlightenment into causative factors of excessive weight;
she understands and can apply the healing energy of water and exercise.

By tapping into the Source of all healing power, the author has broken free of a troubled past. Mary-Margareht overcame great odds. The Courage to Be Who I Am is just the beginning of her journey.

I appreciate the auther of this book. I remember the many times when something felt "wrong" with me but doctors and advice didn't help. I immediately connected to many areas of this book which illustrated that I was o.k. , just on my spirtual path.

I have since found some enlightened doctors and chiropractors who have their own experiences in this arena, and not just traditional medicine.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for publishing this materiel.

I found myself compelled to read this book through to completion. Mary Margareht's words gave me an opportunity to answer many questions about myself. I would recommend anyone who is interested in learning more about the spiritual life to pick this book up and read it.
