Featuring a WSP Reading Group Guide

Purvis, Mississippi, 1974: Willem Fremont has just returned to his childhood hometown to come to grips with his past. He has spent his adult life held tight inside the clenched fist of panic disorder -- the stagnation produced by making too many wrong decisions was more paralyzing than a whole case of Jim Beam.

Determined that a trip back to the family farm will help him confront his unhappy upbringing, Willem is stunned to find his father's beloved acreage -- so much land, such a great big house -- in the hands of Eilene Till and her two grown sons. There's the plump and perennially unemployed Sonny, building a shrimp boat in the Tills' landlocked backyard, and Bruno, a disabled Vietnam vet, who escapes into his stash of old National Geographics while his wife, Leah, seeks a small measure of comfort in the day-to-day tending of their farm. How Willem navigates through these unsettled lives to find love and reconciliation in his own is at the heart of this compassionate portrait of small-town America that celebrates the unusual, embraces the unwanted, and opens its arms to all lost souls in search of a home.

"What are the limitations of what we do and don't know about our hearts? Oprah Book Club author Melinda Haynes, hailed as ""the real thing, a true artist, a genuine writer"" (the Cleveland Plain Dealer) for her bestselling debut, Mother of Pearl, returns with a tender, heartbreaking, and occasionally hilarious novel set in the 1970s. Willem Fremont has spent his adult life held tight inside the clenched fist of panic disorder. Determined to break the pattern -- even as he reaches his twilight years -- Willem returns to his childhood home in Purvis, Mississippi, where he believes the solution lies. There he discovers his father's acreage in the hands of the idiosyncratic Till family. Eilene, mother of Sonny and Bruno and ""no bigger than a dress form,"" pretends to be deaf as a way of dealing with her grown boys -- each of whom suffers from inertia. Sonny, hugely fat, perennially unemployed, and looking for love, is building a shrimp boat in his mother's landlocked backyard. Bruno, who has returned from Vietnam with a spinal injury and wearing a brace, escapes into the glossy pages of old National Geographics while his wife, Leah, tries to find a small measure of comfort in the day-to-day tending of their farm. From these unsettled lives comes a story of reconciliation against all odds and a vision of rekindled love as well as a compassionate portrait of small-town life that celebrates the unusual, embraces the unwanted, and opens its arms to all lost souls in search of a home. Steeped in the traditions of great southern storytellers like Flannery O'Connor and William Faulkner, Willem's Field is nonetheless a wholly original and vividly imaginative novel by a brilliant and assured writer. 2 out of 5 stars Now what the heck was that all about ?.......2006-01-05

From reading the reviews and the critical acclaims on the dust jacket,I was expecting a lot from this book.Southern writers have always been my favorite in fiction.I am particularly fond of Erskine Caldwell and have read all his novels and many of his short stories. The South has always provided a wealth of life and historical material, but it takes great expertise on the part of an author to create 'a great Southern novel'.The Old West is similar in that there is plenty of material, real or fictional, but again great skill and believability is what creates a 'great Western'.To say this book is in the same league as Margaret Mitchell's,GWTW,Caldwell's 'God's Little Acre',or Tobacco Road,Steinbeck's earthy novels and novels by Faulkner or Williams is a real stretch of the imagination,at least in my opinion.First of all,as I read this novel,I was continually left with the feeling that the author had never really spent any time with these types of people,in other words she seemed remote from what she was writing about.Good southern writing is loaded with humor, dejection, helplessness ,hopelessnes, trial and ,language and phrases, tribulation, and earthyness so powerful you it jumps out at you on every page.I did not get this sort of thing from this book.I think there were parts of the novel that had the makings of a good story, but it was too dragged out with detailed descriptions that I just wanted to get past and on with the story.Maybe the whole book was just too long for the story being told, that the reader was so busy reading description that the impact of the situations got lost;again in my opinion.I guess the best way I can make my point is that this book could be written in half the words and would have been better. This is something I couldn't say about Erskine Caldwell's novels.Although Steinbeck and Caldwell were contemporaries, few people know that Caldwell outsold Steinbeck at the time, however, for a lot of reasons his greatness has been belittled so much that he is becoming unknown.I was quite taken by Haynes' several references to Taylor Caldwell in this book ,since when lookind for Erskine Caldwell novels in used bookstores,I am often corrected with a comment "Oh,you must mean Taylor Caldwell".So,if you've never read Erskine Caldwell, and want to see what great Southern writing is,check out some of his works.

5 out of 5 stars Definite winner.......2004-05-21

Similar in voice and rich, deep characterization as her other novels (Mother of Pearl and Chalktown), this book will not disappoint. Touched to the depths of my soul, I look into a mirror when I read Haynes' work; I promise that Willem's Field will enlighten while it entertains, evokes and perplexes. Great read!

4 out of 5 stars A dark book with a happy ending.......2004-02-08

Melinda Haynes has written a wonderfully simple, yet delightfully complicated book about how ordinary people can overcome seemingly debilitating social and familial malaise. The reader is left wondering how Haynes recreates the panic disorder scenes without suffering from the affliction herself. The ease with which she writes about Willem's episodes leaves you with understanding and empathy for a condition that is not present in everyday life, for most.
However, she also confronts an affliction that is all too common in many families - the consequence of living generations without communicating. Circumstances conspire against the characters, bringing them to a point where either violence or clarity will emerge. And until the end, you're never sure which it will be. All those who are stuck in the rut of everyday life, that are unhappy with their boring, monotonous lives, will read this book and be thankful for the simple things that can bring them happiness. For these characters, their happiness was just below the surface, the last place they were all looking. And by persevering, they survived. "Willem's Field" is a commentary on the lives of ordinary people, looking for happiness. And a message that life's purpose may be right under our noses.

4 out of 5 stars I'd like to sit and have coffee with these people!.......2003-09-01

I found this book a joy to read. Original characters that pop off the page and sit down and have coffee.

Now retired and in his twilight years, Willem Fremont hasn't been back to his home town of Purvis, Mississippi since he left at age nineteen. Certain he will find answers there, he journeys back in search of the source of his panic attacks. What unfolds is a finally crafted quilt of the interrelated lives of family and friends in all their heartwarming, hilarious glory that is as true in the South as it is in the Midwest and New York City. Set in the 70s, it brings together many of the social and political problems, gets under them and puts a human face on them. I don't want to spoil any of the fun of turning these pages, but I will promise there will be at least one moment you'll chuckle and say, "This writer's been to my house!" I've not read Melinda Haynes first two books, Mother of Pearl and Chalktown, but I will. A strong character driven story, this would make a good independant film.

This new volume includes new stories by Raymond E. Feist, Dennis L. McKiernan, Mickey Zucker Reichert, Diana Paxson, Lynn Abbey and others.Sanctuary: a lawless city governed by evil forces, powerful magic, and political intrigue, where survival is an unexpected bonus. The Age of the Rankan reign of Kadakithis, the occupation of the Beysib, and even the erstwhile Renaissance are all in the past. It is years later and the heroes of the past-Jubal, Tempus, Shadowspawn, and the Stormchildren-are memories, myth, and rumor. Now outsiders rule with an iron hand and a bloody dagger. Molin Torchholder, the secret guardian of the city, is dead, his mantle and staff secretly passed to another. But Sanctuary and its inhabitants carry on. The city has reached a turning point . . . and only the fates know where it will lead.

4 out of 5 stars First Story Collection for the New Thieves' World.......2005-08-23

This is the first Thieves' World volume to follow Lynn Abbey's "Sanctuary", the novel that, if it didn't wipe the slate clean for this shared-universe setting, at least erased a whole lot of what had come before. "Sanctuary" was a "and now, many years later" type of reboot to clear the decks of a lot of old characters and punt a whole mess of overly byzantine plotlines to the curb. This collection of short stories therefore deals mostly with brand new characters with a different set of concerns and goals than the "old school" heroes and villains from the original run back in the Eighties. It's a good point to jump aboard because things haven't become too terribly convoluted yet.

I just had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Abbey this past weekend at a convention. In addition to the second new short story collection, "Enemies of Fortune", that has already been released, there is a third volume that is being planned. We are very unlikely to see the return of the big names from the past (such as the loathsome Tempus). In some cases (in particular Marion Zimmer Bradley's Lythande the Blue Adept) this is because the authors in question spun their characters off into stand-alone novels and went beyond the scope of the shared universe and were told that there was no bringing them back into Sanctuary. At any rate, Ms. Abbey will be trying to keep each collection more self-contained, so that plots don't span multiple volumes and the characters won't be pursuing 18 different agendas simultaneously.

In addition to sharing tidbits of how things were done back in the day (the writers from the first run seemed to spend plenty of time plotting against their own editors, when they weren't taking out their frustrations on the characters of fellow authors they were quarreling with), Ms. Abbey and some folks from Green Ronin fielded questions about the new Thieves' World role-playing game. Chaosium had their own version of this 20 years ago, but now the game rights have been transferred and Green Ronin is rolling out four d20-compatible volumes, two of which have already been released. The upcoming guide to the world of Sanctuary (including city maps and details on all of the realms we've heard of, such as the Rankan Empire, Ilsig, and so on) sounds really great. And everything in the RPG material will be considered canonical. Worth a look when it comes out!

5 out of 5 stars sword-sorcery-skullduggery at its best.......2004-08-13

If you are looking for an excellent sword/scorcery/adventure read then Sanctuary is the place. Old fans of the original 12 books and new ones will be greatly pleased with this effort. Anyone that says there is nothing exciting in the heroic fantasy genre needs to look no further.

5 out of 5 stars Remember the good old days..........2004-07-24

When the Hell-Hounds patrolled the Maze, when Unicorns were Vulgar and when Sanctuary was just a play-thing for the Gods?
Well, the Gods have left and the city has new rulers, but most of the rules are the same - there are none. Keep a sharp eye on your friends, a closer one on your enemies and grow a third eye to watch your back.
Welcome to Thieves' World! Enter one of the darkest cities EVER to be created by ANYBODY. Ten stories by such authors as Raymons E. Feist, Lynn Abbey (of course) and Diana L. Paxson.
Old fans will wish to get this book and new fans will wish to collect the old series (if they can). Meet the most dangerous, most tight-fisted, most foul-mouthed, Heros you may EVER come to love.
Just keep a fourth eye on your purse.

4 out of 5 stars A return to the past and a new begining.......2004-01-21

Many moons ago there was an anthology called Thieves World. It was about a small city called Sanctuary and the goings on within this city. A caste of characters was developed by different authors and as the books progressed, so did the characters. The difference was the authors could use characters from each other. This gave a very rich narrarative to the various tales. Instead of getting one version of events, the reader recieved many versions of the same accounts. This gave the world of Thieves World a depth not very often seen.

Lynn Abbey has returned to the city again and worked his magic. Once again the city of Sanctuary is in full bloom. This is the first of the new set and it is a great beggining. The setting is many years after the end of the last book from the last collection. This gives the city a new feel, but does leave an old reader wondering what happened to the various characters from the last anthology. Some old characters do make appearences as older or dead versions of themselves, but most of them are gone without mention. A new reader can figure out what had happened with the history from the new stories, but there is nothing like living the old books. This is my only complaint about first book. The writing is superb and Abbey gets my compliments with his editing and choice of writers. My personal favorite story is "Doing the Gods' Work" by Jody Van Nye. Even in a city of cutthroats, somebody is trying to build something for the good.

This book is great start to something new and does harken back to the old for those of us who enjoyed the first Anthology. Highly reccommended.

4 out of 5 stars Good stuff but McKiernan?????.......2003-07-26

Overall the book was a fairly strong return to Thieves' World. With, for the most part, a good stable of returning authors as well as what look to be some very promising new (to Thieves' World) authors.

By and large, the new characters offer a great deal of potential for diverse and interesting stories. In the entire volume, I personally only found the Andrew Offut and Dennis McKiernan stories to not be to my liking. Offut's story simply failed to insire me while McKiernan's was, by and large, little more than an exercise in literary powergaming. At least at this point in the renewed series nothing is lost but wasted time if a reader were to wisely choose to skip that particular story.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but also repetitive.......2005-06-07

The McCade books are very good, among my all-time faves, but they're getting a bit repetitive. At least this time around there aren't any assasins, but in Alien Bounty McCade manages to wind up in chains not once but TWICE, and once again manages to get rescued by his buds, Rico, eversoheavily armed, and Phil, once a slave himself. In the next novel, McCade's Bounty, our galactic space hero's daughter is enslaved by the space pirates. I swear, I would be suprised if in McCade's world anyone lower in status than Lakorian royalty was NOT a slave at some point, considering the stats. Also, the part in Alien Bounty about Mustapha Pong is a bit short. Other than those two points, though, MCCADE ON THE RUN excels. It weaves an intricate, complex universe in its diverse worlds, some of which entirely artificial. Dont expect any of that "Oh, it's a lava world" nonsense.

This book deserves 4.5 stars, but hey, I'm a pessimist.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT ADVENTURE BOOK... .......2005-01-30

Ok, I loved the book and so will you if you enjoy shooting, suspense and good characters. Sometimes the resolution of the suspense is a little too easy, but other times it is very exciting and rewarding. I have not read the previous book in the series, but have read other books by Dietz over the years and enjoyed them.

I have since purchased another book by him and hope that it is as good as this one.

3 out of 5 stars Fast-paced and interesting plot development.......1999-03-29

Definitely a story worthy of the Dietz name. Almost on par with his "Legion of the Damned" series considering it's a storyline based on civilian society rather than on military society. The action is relatively fast-paced and keeps the reader from putting the book down. However, the Il Ronn are too anthropomorhic to be believably alien and the description of their behaviour and society harkens to nothing more than humans in funny looking suits.

I was originally given this cookbook by my grandmother 20 years ago, and I used it so much it completely fell apart. I've used this cookbook far, far more than any of the several others I have. I was so happy to be able to get another one in perfect condition! Every single recipe I've tried out of the hundreds of recipes in the book (and I've tried many, many of them over the years) has been excellent and several of the recipes have become family favorites - especially Morrocan Chicken. I highly recommend this cookbook.

                                  Book Description

Pablo Picasso's continued search for the essential features of perceived objects and his natural abidance to the general principles regulating artistic creation determined his intuitive analysis of the various stages of vision. His exploration of pictorial language is reflected in the well-established periods in the development of Cubism. Progressively, objects were analyzed first by their image (or retinal) and surface (or external) features as viewed from particular observer-oriented viewpoints during the Pre-Cubist and Cézannian Cubist stages; then by viewer-independent, structural features during Analytic Cubism; and finally by categorial features during Synthetic Cubism. This final re-evaluation allowed the artist to treat pictorial language as truly arbitrary, leading to metaphorical correlations between objects that went beyond what was actually depicted on the surface of the canvas.

5 out of 5 stars Fun Read. Easy to Navigate........2003-09-21

I'm not that familiar with the topic, so this was a wonderful book to get me acquainted. I liked the tone of the book, particularly because it was not preachy in any way, and the author handled the topic with respect. I'm new at New Age, but not old age. The book was easy to get around in, and I thank the author for bringing it into the world for people like me, who want to continuously learn. She puts everything in question and answer format, and that is extremely helpful. I have now purchased 7 copies for my book club and we had a vibrant discussion on the topics covered.

                                  5 out of 5 stars VERY HELPFUL--I LOVED IT--GREAT READ.......2003-09-21

This author has done a very nice job in bringing forth what to most people is unfamiliar territory. I have read numerous articles about the book and heard this author on the radio. She apporaches the subject from a compassionate journalistic point of view, and does not pretend to presnt herself in any other way. A very honest read, and I HIGHLY recommend the book, especailly to those who would like a helpful and comforting overview of the topic from various practitioners of mystical arts. As the author recently said on a radio interview, this book is not meant to be a directory, and those who are not portrayed in the book and who are making rather a fuss about it, need to look at their own basic philoshoy of "things happen for a reason." Thus, if a certain psychic happened to be excluded, well...guess what...there was probably a reason for that. Any way, it was a GREAT read, and I am lookiing forward to her next book, Famous Wisconsin Artists and Architects.

                                  2 out of 5 stars a light weight read.......2003-09-01

I found the book to have all the depth of a Saturday afternoon coffee and gossip woman's group. While amusing it only attempted to skim the top most layer of it's subject. I would save my money and pass by this and future offerings by this author.

5 out of 5 stars COULDN'T PUT THIS BOOK DOWN!!.......2003-02-27

                                  From Jack...
I was intersted in this topic but also a little cautious about it. I found the book to have a lot of insight into the world of psychics, tarot readers, astrologers, healers, numerologists, etc. It is an incredible read and you won't be able to put it down! Very informative and makes me feel more comfortable with the topic in general.
