I was 15 years old in Hungary when I read the Karl May's stories of Winnetou and Old Shatterhand. What a great nostalgic experience it was to read them again, this time in english, over 50 years later.

wholesome, fabulous read.......2006-12-18

I read most of Karl May's stories as a child. They were at that time translated into Czech. The stories are everything you could ask for. There is adventure, mystery,etc. You name it and it's in there. Deep down there are also non-assuming messages on how to be a good person. These books shaped my views on bigotry in a way no speech or lesson ever could have.

The Norby Chronicles (1986) is an omnibus edition containing the first two volumes in the Norby series: Norby, the Mixed-Up Robot and Norby's Other Secret. Norby is the product of McGillicuddy -- a genius level space explorer -- who found an alien spaceship in the asteroid belt. Norby was constructed in a stainless steel barrel used to transport nails and has various and sundry components from the alien ship.

In Norby, the Mixed-Up Robot (1983), Cadet Jeff Wells is really in trouble. While trying to use the main computer network to sleep-learn Martian Swahili, he accidentally scrambled the recipes in the kitchen computer. Federation Security Agent Two Gidlow intends to take Jeff back to headquarters to probe his brain for the presence of any classified material.

Admiral Yobo of Space Command is skeptical of Agent Gidlow's charges. He calls Jeff's older brother -- Farley Gordon Wells -- and discusses the situation with him. Fargo suggests that Jeff be sent home by matter transmitter as soon as possible.

Admiral Yobo tells Jeff to do as Fargo says and even gives him some credits to buy a used teaching robot so that he can learn Martian Swahili. Jeff packs -- not hard with the little allowed a cadet -- and heads home. After dropping his stuff off at home, he heads out to buy a teaching robot.

The salesman tries to talk Jeff into putting a down payment on a newer model, but Jeff finds Norby behind all the other robots and buys him for a reasonable amount. It helps that Norby had not been talking to the salesman and was therefore thought to have failing faculties. Jeff immediately takes Norby home with him.

In this story, Norby displays some unusual properties, including a lack of the usual three laws of robotics. He doesn't obey commands very well, but tries to protect Jeff and himself. He is also good-natured, but his feelings are easily hurt.

In Norby's Other Secret (1984), Norby is wanted by the Inventors Union so that they can disassemble him to discover the secret of miniantigravity. Even Admiral Yobo wants to find out that secret, but he is considerably less ruthless that the inventors.

The Admiral drops in unannounced to warn Jeff and also to eat some real food. The Admiral has a large appetite and a love of very hot spices. He is busily eating the roast chicken when a thump and a growl come from elsewhere in the apartment.

Checking out the strange sounds, Jeff and the Admiral find a full-grown lion in the bedroom. After throwing the chicken to the lion and waving a chair in its face, Jeff packs sedatives into the meatloaf and throws it to the lion. During this time, Jeff's brother Fargo and Albany the policewoman show up; Albany orders an antigravity car and Norby loads the sleeping lion into it for transport to a nearby zoo.

When agents of Federal Security show up to take away Norby, he and Jeff flee through hyperspace. Norby takes them back to Jamya, but this time the lady dragon Ziphyzggtmtizm welcomes them and even allows them to call her Zi. They are invited into her castle for a bite to eat.

In this story, Jeff is summoned to the large castle on the hill by the Mentor, a large four-armed robot. When he and Norby arrive at the castle, Jeff is confined by a misty force field, but Norby escapes through hyperspace. Jeff's mind is scanned by a computer until Norby can rescue him.

Highly recommended for younger Asimov fans (and for some older ones) as well as for anyone else who enjoys tales of space adventures, alien robots, and friendly dragons.

In the Norby Chronicles you meet Jeff Wells, an awkward fourteen year old boy who is trying to graduate from the Space Academy. He gets into more trouble than anybody. For example he trying to "sleep learn" Martian Swahili when he screws up the kitchen computer which translates all the recipes into Martian Swahili. That wouldn't be so bad except Admiral Yobo, the Academy Commandant, is very fond of eating. He's also fond of Jeff's older brother Fargo Wells (apparently Janet likes a good pun). Anyhow Admiral Yobo lends Jeff the money to buy a second-hand robot, which starts this adventure. You'll meet Space Pirates, Ing the Ingrate, Dragons, and sentient robots.

Highly recommended for mid- to early teens and up

The Norby books are not just kids books! They are great additions to any science fiction lover's shelf. I have read the entire series several times, and it never grows old. Purchase the entire series if you can find the books.

Science Fiction With Humor and Humanity.......2003-07-25

Much of science fiction is focused on intergalactic intrigue and space warfare; huge plots that dwarf individual emotions and struggles.

Not so with the Norby series. These stories are about a group of people who get the chance to travel through space and time. Each of the characters grows on the reader and there are many humorous occurences.

In the first book, the main character Jeff Wells uses a voucher to purchase a new school robot. The one he chooses seems to have a mind of its own and gets offended when criticized for singing badly. Norby may not look impressive with an old nail barrel as a body, but he has certain abilities and a strange past...

Jeff is a low-key teenager who is gentle, perceptive, and patient. He is the right companion for Norby who is often bossy, irritable, and mixed up. While Norby is difficult to deal with, Jeff usually remembers that his robot's feelings are easily hurt. The stories tend to revolve around this friendship but other characters such as Jeff's older brother Fargo, his girlfriend Albany Jones, and Admiral Yobo are almost always in the story as well with their own contributions to make.

The Norby series is usually consigned to the children's shelf, but I believe it is excellent literature for anyone.

I read this when I was quite young. I loved it. It got me hooked on sci-fi. I really like this book. It started me off on this great genre.

Claim Your Goddess Power.......2006-03-22

The author is of Greek heritage and brings an intimate cultural account of how the Goddess archetypes can be used as symbolic icons in life. It is similar to the Jean Shinoda Bolen book which focuses on the goddesses archetype in the context of Jungian psychoanalysis. So this book is an introduction to how myth can be a healing philosophy. Agapi has talked about how "Athena" helped her heal a broken heart when she had trouble letting go and she brings the goddesses into a practical context. This is a book to read in combination with Dr. Bolen for anyone keen on doing "inner goddess work".

A book for every woman .......2004-09-07

Agapi Stassinopolous has written a wonderful book. It is both informative and inspiring. In my opinion, Conversations with the goddesses should be read by every woman on Earth- because almost everyone can benefit from it. Readers can view this book as either a self-help book or merely a book of greek myths... but the former is a much more exciting way to read it. Although I am only 15, this book has helped me change the way I view the world- and more importantly- myself. I suggest that no one younger than 15 read it, but Conversations would probably be perfect for a college student- or gosh, it's perfect for every woman! You can learn so much about... everything. I think it would be wise to read it slowly, so you can absorb it all, and try out the activities as you go along. But, if you're like me,once you start, you'll want to read the whole thing right away!

Goddess wisdom from a worthy bearer!.......2000-09-20

This is a profoundly moving and beautiful study of Greek goddess archetypes that I wish I had written! Like Ms. Stassinopoulos, I have been fascinated by Greek mythology from childhood. Although my scholastic background is in Russian language and literature, I have studied ancient Greek and minored in classical studies when I got my BA at Reed College, which features a rigorous year-long course on Greece, Rome, and the Middle Ages that is mandatory for all freshmen. My lifelong desire to visit Greece was finally realized two years ago when my husband and I spent our tenth anniversary touring Athens and the Greek Islands.

I now work for the City of West Hollywood and continue to find seemingly infinite applications for goddess wisdom. In March of this year I based a well-received Women's History Month presentation upon Ms. Stassinopoulos' book. I adapted this talk for the American Biographical Institute/International Biographical Centre's 27th Millennium Congress on Arts and Communications in Washington, DC which was attended by delegates from 44 nations. The Women of Achievement panel was held on Independence Day (how apropos!) and the illuminating discussions of Artemis, Athena, and Hestia found in CONVERSATIONS WITH THE GODDESSES served to ground my scholastic and civic accomplishments. Women (and men) from all over the world responded with almost overwhelming enthusiasm to these timeless insights and Ms. Stassinopoulos can be assured that Hestia's torch is being carried into the new millennium by these global citizens. This was one of the peak experiences of my professional life and I am sure that CONVERSATIONS will be of similar benefit to many other readers.

As an activist I especially appreciated Ms. Stassinopoulis' many references to 19th- and 20th-century feminists. I found the illustrations and literary reflections to be an especially valuable feature of this wondrous book, which I cannot recommend highly enough and will give as a gift to all the important women in my own life.

the author covered in this book the exact same goddesses jean shinoda bolen covered in her book goddesses in every woman. am i saying one is better than the other? no,i am not because they are different this book shows us how to communicate with these goddesses. bolen's book teaches us which goddess our personality is most like. i reccomend both these books very highly.

Conversations with the Goddess reveals to anyone who has the "ears to hear and the eyes to see" the true teachings of the ancient Goddess culture. The direct revelation from the Goddess in this book is no less to be respected than that in religious texts such as The Bible, The Koran, The Baghavad Gita, and others. The Goddess Herself has revealed to Mark Pinkham the information that She wants disseminated upon the planet today...for the revival of Her way of life....as opposed to the left-brain, logical, rational partriarchal intellectualism that has driven our way of life upon our planet to the place it is today - one lacking the marriage between heart and mind. It's time that people pay attention to Her teachings. If you are a person who wants to live your life tune with the Goddess and thus return our world to peace, then this book is a must for YOU!

Honestly..........2003-11-03

After reading halfway through this goddess worshipping, New Age, anti-Christian, coming-age-of -luhv and global-peace-and-harmony tome, several possible answers as to the question of its origin may be discerned:

1) The author just sat down and made the whole thing up,

2) He was possessed by Lucifer imparting rebellion and spiritual deception, or

3) What was he smoking?

It is probably a combination of the above three theories that inspired _Conversations with the Goddess_. The point of the book is that "the Goddess", who is revealing herself in the world, will usher in an age of universal peace, harmony and enlightenment. The tried-and-true Gnostic theme of Orthodox Christianity being a male-dominated "Luciferian" religion whose purpose is to repress and control humanity is of course in here. There are tons of bizarre, disjointed references to lost spirits, Atlantis, Lemuria, mythological gods and the rest, thrown together in a seemingly random pattern. The beginning of the book describes some mystical experience the author had, and how the Goddess spoke to him. The text is a confounding, meaningless exchange of questions between Pinkham and "the Goddess" where he questions her on his assumptions of hidden mystical wisdom and she responds. This is not a very good book on the occult. It seems ironic that orthodox Christians are criticized for having backward, obscurantist, ignorant beliefs. The world is supposed to be based solely upon human rationality and reason. How does this account for the current popularity of wicca, astrology, watered-down Eastern mysticism, scientology, UFOs in our "post-Christian" era?

These books are for sharing ideas for different types of window treatments. The entire set is in three ring binders for easy page removal to take to a client, workroom, and/or fabric store. There were also many construction instructions, not just the pattern order numbers.

Half of the book show pictures of patterns; pictures that you can obtain for free when you order an item from M'Fay.com, the other half of the book...not to great.
