Zachary's Wings: A Novel
Rosemarie Robotham Manufacturer: Scribner ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0684847264 |
Book Description
Rosemarie Robotham makes her impressive fiction debut with this tender, seductive love story about a perceptive young social worker and the enigmatic reporter who draws him into the restless stream of her life.
Zachary, the middle son in a loving but chaotic working-class African-American family, is the guardian of secrets, the one his kin turn to with their emotional burdens. An unassuming man, he finds social work entirely natural, "nothing more than helping some people get through their day." Korie, a child of upper-middle-class professionals in the West Indies, is a more driven soul, but her fiercely competent exterior belies emotional storms. When she meets Zach on a reporting assignment in Philadelphia, she is immediately drawn to this easygoing man in whom so many people place their trust.
Zach, equally fascinated, quickly fosters a relationship. But what begins as a passionate affair becomes increasingly troubled. Zachary's Wings turns on questions of race and sexuality, class and culture, and the intricate tangle of secrets that begin to consume Zach and Korie's lives. This intimate and warmly appealing novel -- and the complex characters at its core -- will win the hearts of readers everywhere.

Warming to the Soul.......2002-05-29
Well Written Debut Novel!.......2001-11-11
Zachary Piper is a Philadelphia social worker with a heart of gold. Zach is a compassionate and easy going spirit who's always there for everyone else---family, friends, co-workers, clients and significant others. But who's there for Zachary? Enter Korie Morgan...albeit a driven soul with a fierce competitive nature...she appears to be the perfect mate for Zachary. Well at least she's there at the right time and in the right place. Over a swift weekend, their relationship quickly blossoms and they're professing their undying love for each other. However, there's a slight problem...Korie hasn't come clean regarding her current relationship.
Zachary`s Wing is a compelling and though provoking debut novel. It's an intriguing story about the tangled web of secrets that begin to consume Zach and Korie's lives. Robotham's writing is fluid and lyrical. As she involves us in Zach and Korie's story she shares with us tough and taboo issues that they must face before they can truly be together. Controversial issues such as race, class and culture, sexuality and infidelity. Zachary's Wing is captivating and rich. The characters are memorable and believable and we share in their pain, joy, sorrow and hope. Zachary Wing by Rosemarie Robotham is an insightful and touching look into the nature of human relationships.
What a love story.......2001-06-25
Warm, tender and enlightening........2001-03-05
Korie, from an aristocratic Jamaican family, is an educated and successful woman. In college, she is charmed by Sam, an intelligent but unambitious schoolmate. They marry, but eventually drift apart.
When Korie meets Zachary, it's magic. But soon Sam becomes gravely ill and needs Korie's constant care. Zachary quickly recognizes Sam's illness as AIDS, but Korie is afraid to confront the implications of that diagnosis, and neither of the men wants to disillusion her. In any case, Zachary soon becomes Sam's primary caretaker. Meanwhile, the stress of handling relations with two lovers, and also trying to live up to her family's expectations, drives Korie deeper and deeper into drug addiction and despair.
After Sam's death, Korie's despair and drug addiction grow worse, and Zachary returns to Philadelphia. But with her family's help, Korie eventually straightens herself and understands what a treasure she had in Zachary.
In Zachary, Robotham has created a saintly character without making him too good to be true - and that's no easy task. I go back to the single criterion I use to decide how well I like a novel: Did I care about these characters? And the answer is a resounding YES. The fact is I loved all three of them for as long as they lived in my imagination while reading this book.
In addition, the book did something for me which I'm not sure Robotham had in mind. It gave me a glimmer of insight into why African-Americans need the companionship of other African-Americans, and will never be completely comfortable as 12% of a White culture. She (Robotham) communicates this without screaming at the reader about the desperate conditions in the ghetto, or by any anti-White diatribes. It is just the cadences of the conversations, the assumptions and routines of daily life, which made me understand why there is nothing necessarily sinister or racist in the tendency of (for example) Black high school students to hang out together.
To accomplish this in less than 300 pages, along with telling a splendid love story, is an impressive accomplishment. Well done, Ms. Robotham!

If this was half the price, it might be worth it, but even then I would only suggest this for the absolute collector that must have every Cowboy Bebop related piece of merchandise out there, regardless of quality. For the casual fan, or even the more fanatic, it's simply not worth the money.

Not so special.......2003-09-27
Spirit truly does not allow a breach of the future. For St. Catherine to give accounts of the future flies in the face of research in this field and common sense. If you know the outcome of the football game, will you play the same way?
I got that bad feeling you get when you are in the presence of a con game. I believe many people who read this book might feel the same way.
I take this book and her readings with a grain of salt.

A Guide to Kansas Mushrooms
Bruce Horn , Richard Kay , and Dean Abel Manufacturer: University Press of Kansas ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0700605703 |
Book Description
A unique crossroads for mushrooms, Kansas is populated by a blend of northerners and southerners, serves as a western frontier for easterners, and harbors a few West Coast natives. In this book, the authors offer a myriad of how-to's when stalking and using mushrooms, from identifying an Old Man in the Woods to sauteing a tasty Volvariella bombycina. Besides providing both the Latin and common names and descriptions of 235 species found in the state, they have included 150 color photographs of common and not so common species, a nontechnical key for identification, a calendar of fungal fruiting seasons, and a list of all 548 species that have been located in Kansas. And for those rusty on their Latin, they've included a guide to the origin and pronunciation of Latin names.
Mushroom hunters will find a number of useful tips in this book, whether they want to eat their quarry, photograph it, or examine it under a microscope. And to add richness to the sport, the authors have included an overview of Kansas geography and climate, a history of mycology in the state, and practical advice for forays in the field.
With something for the novice, the advanced amateur, and even the professional mycologist, A Guide to Kansas Mushrooms provides general explanations and advice, as well as descriptions of mushrooms found not only in this state but throughout the country, particularly east of the Rockies.
This book is part of the Kansas Nature Guides series.

The Rough Guide to Tanzania 1 (Rough Guide Travel Guides)
Jens Finke Manufacturer: Rough Guides ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 1858287839 |
Book Description
INTRODUCTIONLying just south of the equator, Tanzania is East Africa's largest country, and an immensely rewarding place to visit. Filling the brochures are several world-famous attractions: the plains of the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro (Africa's highest mountain) and Zanzibar, with its idyllic palm-fringed beaches and historic Stone Town. Yet there's a whole lot more to Tanzania than these obvious highlights. Almost everywhere you go you'll find interesting wildlife and inspiring landscapes (over forty percent of the country is protected in some form or other) ranging from forest-covered volcanic peaks to dusty savanna populated by elephants, antelopes, lions, leopards and cheetahs. Tanzania is one of the four most naturally diverse nations on earth: it contains Africa's second-largest number of bird species (around 1500), the continent's biggest mammal population and three-quarters of East Africa's plant species (over ten thousand). Add to this the country's rich ethnic diversity, some superb hiking and other activities like snorkelling and diving, and you have the makings of a holiday of a lifetime.
For all its natural diversity, Tanzania's best asset is its people: friendly, welcoming, unassumingly proud and yet reserved - you'll be treated with uncommon warmth and courtesy wherever you go, and genuine friendships are easily made. The best known tribe are the Maasai, a pastoralist cattle-herding people who inhabit the region around the safari parks in the north, yet there are at least 127 other tribes in Tanzania, perhaps not as visually colourful as the red-robed, spear-carrying Maasai warriors, but with equally rich traditions, histories, customs, beliefs and music, much of which survive despite the ravages of colonialism, modernity and Christianity. For many years, only those with months on their hands had the privilege of really getting to know these people, but since 1995, an award-winning cultural tourism programme has broken new ground in enabling tourists, even those with little time or limited budgets, to experience for themselves local life in an intimate and inevitably fascinating way.

Nonclassical Linear Volterra Equations of the First Kind (Inverse and Ill-Posed Problems Series, 39)
A. S. Apartsyn Manufacturer: Brill Academic Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 9067643750 |
Book Description
This monograph in the Inverse and Ill-Posed Problems Series deals with linear integral Volterra equations of the first kind with variable upper and lower limits of integration. Volterra operators of this type are the basic operators for integral models of dynamic systems. The corresponding conventionally well-posed problems were subject of systematic study: existence and uniqueness theorems were proved, estimates of the inverse operator norms for suitable pairs of functional spaces were obtained, etc. Consideration was also given to quadrature methods for the numerical solution of such equations with emphasis on their specific features, as opposed to classical algorithms. Results of computations for the modelled examples are presented. This book is intended for specialists in computer mathematics, inverse and ill-posed problems, and mathematical modelling.

The I. G. in Peking: Letters of Robert Hart, Chinese Maritime Customs, 1868-1907 (Belknap Press)
Robert Hart Manufacturer: Belknap Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0674443209 |
Book Description
Robert Hart's forty-five year administration of China's customs service was a unique achievement. In these letters Hart speaks to us directly from a time long past in China, but a time that may seem only yesterday to a Western reader. The result is a primary source for the history of modem China and the era of foreign privilege there.
Bearing sole responsibility for the Chinese Maritime Customs as its Inspector General, Hart built up an international staff of thousands, facilitated foreign trade, gave the late-Ch'ing court its principal new revenues, and fostered China's modernity in administration, schools, naval development, postal service, and many other lines. Behind the scenes Hart was also a diplomat who settled the Sino-French war, changed Macao's status, got boundaries delimited with Burma and India, and mitigated the disasters of imperialism. His career at Peking, coinciding with that of the Empress Dowager Tz'u-hsi, represented the constructive side of the unequal treaty system and Victorian Britain's informal empire in East Asia.
The publication of the great I.G.'s weekly or fortnightly letters to his confidant and London commissioner, James Duncan Campbell, gives us an intimate, inside view of Hart's problems and methods. He appraises his employers in China's foreign office, the Tsungli Yamen, and comments pithily on the complex flow of events and personalities. He quotes the Confucian Classic but, even more, the Latin poets. His personal life is revealed--standing long hours at his writing desk, finding solace in the violin, keeping his own counsel, constantly isolated by his responsibilities. Having no confidant in Peking, he explains himself to his loyal agent in London.
The Hart-Campbell letters, after five years' editing and annotation and with an informed introduction by Hart's final successor as foreign I.G., Mr. L. K. Little, thus take their place as one of the great historical treasures that bring a vanished era back to life.
