Book Description

Rosemarie Robotham makes her impressive fiction debut with this tender, seductive love story about a perceptive young social worker and the enigmatic reporter who draws him into the restless stream of her life.

Zachary, the middle son in a loving but chaotic working-class African-American family, is the guardian of secrets, the one his kin turn to with their emotional burdens. An unassuming man, he finds social work entirely natural, "nothing more than helping some people get through their day." Korie, a child of upper-middle-class professionals in the West Indies, is a more driven soul, but her fiercely competent exterior belies emotional storms. When she meets Zach on a reporting assignment in Philadelphia, she is immediately drawn to this easygoing man in whom so many people place their trust.

Zach, equally fascinated, quickly fosters a relationship. But what begins as a passionate affair becomes increasingly troubled. Zachary's Wings turns on questions of race and sexuality, class and culture, and the intricate tangle of secrets that begin to consume Zach and Korie's lives. This intimate and warmly appealing novel -- and the complex characters at its core -- will win the hearts of readers everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars Warming to the Soul.......2002-05-29

I absolutely loved this book. I am not a "random fiction reader" but I was quite pleased with this book. The tale of an African American male being the core of his family is wonderful and refreshing. It pays tribute to the millions of Zachary's of this world who are often cast in such a negative light because of stereotype and the various isms that plague our society. This book was well crafted as it told the stories from multiple view points which is essential (I think) to any story.
I am anxious to read other tales from this author as this novel clearly indicates that her mind is a treasure chest.

4 out of 5 stars Well Written Debut Novel!.......2001-11-11

I ordered this book by mistake but after reading the book description I decided to keep it. I'm glad I did as it was a very good read.

Zachary Piper is a Philadelphia social worker with a heart of gold. Zach is a compassionate and easy going spirit who's always there for everyone else---family, friends, co-workers, clients and significant others. But who's there for Zachary? Enter Korie Morgan...albeit a driven soul with a fierce competitive nature...she appears to be the perfect mate for Zachary. Well at least she's there at the right time and in the right place. Over a swift weekend, their relationship quickly blossoms and they're professing their undying love for each other. However, there's a slight problem...Korie hasn't come clean regarding her current relationship.

Zachary`s Wing is a compelling and though provoking debut novel. It's an intriguing story about the tangled web of secrets that begin to consume Zach and Korie's lives. Robotham's writing is fluid and lyrical. As she involves us in Zach and Korie's story she shares with us tough and taboo issues that they must face before they can truly be together. Controversial issues such as race, class and culture, sexuality and infidelity. Zachary's Wing is captivating and rich. The characters are memorable and believable and we share in their pain, joy, sorrow and hope. Zachary Wing by Rosemarie Robotham is an insightful and touching look into the nature of human relationships.

4 out of 5 stars What a love story.......2001-06-25

Zachary's wings was a great read. I don't know if any such Zachary's exist. It was a very deep story, it showed love can take you through so many changes. To have someone really in your corner says alot. I know she put Zach through an awful lot over an "EX". They're ex'es for a reason, she's very fortunate that Zachary's love was that strong for her. Honestly I wouldn't have been too upset if they didn't reunite. I know if it were my ex....Anyway, I enjoyed the book and look forward to more of her work.

4 out of 5 stars Warm, tender and enlightening........2001-03-05

This book is well written and thought-provoking, without being deep. It is a warm and enjoyable story of an African-American love triangle.

Korie, from an aristocratic Jamaican family, is an educated and successful woman. In college, she is charmed by Sam, an intelligent but unambitious schoolmate. They marry, but eventually drift apart.

When Korie meets Zachary, it's magic. But soon Sam becomes gravely ill and needs Korie's constant care. Zachary quickly recognizes Sam's illness as AIDS, but Korie is afraid to confront the implications of that diagnosis, and neither of the men wants to disillusion her. In any case, Zachary soon becomes Sam's primary caretaker. Meanwhile, the stress of handling relations with two lovers, and also trying to live up to her family's expectations, drives Korie deeper and deeper into drug addiction and despair.

After Sam's death, Korie's despair and drug addiction grow worse, and Zachary returns to Philadelphia. But with her family's help, Korie eventually straightens herself and understands what a treasure she had in Zachary.

In Zachary, Robotham has created a saintly character without making him too good to be true - and that's no easy task. I go back to the single criterion I use to decide how well I like a novel: Did I care about these characters? And the answer is a resounding YES. The fact is I loved all three of them for as long as they lived in my imagination while reading this book.

In addition, the book did something for me which I'm not sure Robotham had in mind. It gave me a glimmer of insight into why African-Americans need the companionship of other African-Americans, and will never be completely comfortable as 12% of a White culture. She (Robotham) communicates this without screaming at the reader about the desperate conditions in the ghetto, or by any anti-White diatribes. It is just the cadences of the conversations, the assumptions and routines of daily life, which made me understand why there is nothing necessarily sinister or racist in the tendency of (for example) Black high school students to hang out together.

To accomplish this in less than 300 pages, along with telling a splendid love story, is an impressive accomplishment. Well done, Ms. Robotham!

5 out of 5 stars Thought Provoking.......2001-01-21

I enjoyed Zachary's Wings. The more I read the more interesting it became. Z. W. is more than a love story. It is a life story. I enjoyed Zachary's character and his journey to self awareness. He, as are many social workers, was codependent and it affected all of his relationships throughout his life including familial, occupational, and intimate. (I am speaking as a social worker). I also applaud the author for touching on the community wide family secret of AIDS. I await the author's next novel. The epidemic continues because there are so many situations like Korie's out there. We must break through that denial. AIDS and homosexuality (two separate issues that can affect one another) can and does affect us all.

I love Cowboy Bebop, and I'm very happy to have the book, but I would have been far more pleased if the poster contained inside hadn't been ripped in half. Shippers? Please be a little more careful when you box the merchandise, huh?

2 out of 5 stars Not impressed, if this was half the price, then its worth it.......2003-06-22

I'm a huge Cowboy Bebop fan, I own the series on DVD and preordered the movie a long time ago. I bought this book thinking that it would be full of cool facts and info that you wouldn't pick up from the actual DVD, but it's really just a synopsis of each episodes with a bunch of pictures from each episode. There are a few pages of extras, but they are mostly some rough sketches and short bios, nothing really worth the price of this book.

If this was half the price, it might be worth it, but even then I would only suggest this for the absolute collector that must have every Cowboy Bebop related piece of merchandise out there, regardless of quality. For the casual fan, or even the more fanatic, it's simply not worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars Great source for information..........2003-04-29

The 'cowboy Bebeop Anime Guide 1' -the first out of six volumes- starts off with a few character bios, then gives summaries and information on the first six episodes of the series. The last few chapters deal with the setting of Cowboy Bebop universe, with a chapter explaining about bounty hunters along with files on the items used by the characters and lots of sketches on everything from the types of spacesuits used to the character of Vicious.
The information is interesting, but most of it can be found if you have the DVDs. This book would make a good gift for Cowboy Bebop fans who have everything else or for people who need the information at their fingertips, like fan fiction writers. Lots of color pictures right from the anime help fill out the work but it still feels kind of weak.

        4 out of 5 stars Insider's Guide to a Space Cowboy's Life..........2002-09-10

When I snatched (actually purchased) this book, I was instantly drawn in. I mean drawn in. The images are clear and crisp, and I enjoyed reading the play-by-play mode of the episode summaries. While the book doesn't contain my favorite session, I absolutely loved viewing the screencaps of Spike's life courtesy of Session 5: Ballad of Fallen Angels. In the back is an art file filled with black & white drawings of the characters. Interesting and filled with information for any die-hard Bebop fan, the Cowboy Bebop Anime Guide is a definitive must.

I bought this book to help identify Westmoreland Glass from the years it covers 1950 - 1984.

For a twenty year..plus... old book..this really does the line justice for these years. I was able to Identify several pieces I had on hand...and discover aprox. year of manufacture...and in several case the different sizes of some of pieces that were made.

It was a great buy on this book and to tell you the truth...I couldn't be happier. Most of the pictures are in color...and also the listings of each item states what colors it was manufactured in ..It also gives background on the mould situation..as with many glass companys..molds were bought and sold amongst themselves...so often more than one company
used the same mold...each item looking more similar than not..and cases like these are explained here for less confusion.

I recommend to all this book if you are either building a library of books on glass...or if you have a piece made in this time period that you want to learn a bit more about.

                    5 out of 5 stars Great snowflakes!.......2004-10-28

I love these snowflakes! This is the first time I've crocheted with thread and a steel hook... before that, the finest yarn I had used was sock yarn. I've done two snowflakes so far, and they've both come out great. Each was using #10 thread with a #7 hook, and took 1-2 hours to make while watching TV. I think I'll stick to this thread and hook, even though other patterns call for #20 or #30 thread... I'm not sure I could manage with thread that thin. Barbara describes how to starch the snowflakes, but mine seem stiff enough that I think I'll skip that step. I'm not sure if there are mistakes in the instructions, or if I just don't understand some of the steps, but it doesn't seem to matter. So far my guesses seem to produce beautiful results, even if they might not be exactly what the author intended. Guess what everyone is getting for Christmas this year... assuming I can bear to part with the snowflakes!

                        Book Description

Graphic design is broadly interpreted in this annotated topical bibliography, covering both scholarly and applied literature focusing on graphics printed commercially for mass consumption in the United States from colonial times to the present. Materials extend from historical studies of design to textbooks and manuals of professional practice to theoretical works relating to design drawn from disciplines such as psychology and communication theory. The 1100 entries include reference sources, books, periodical articles, catalogs, films, and electronic data. Among the topics covered are general reference, design theory and history, education and career guides, professional practice, production and layout, typography, calligraphy, color reproduction, caricature, and photo illustrations as well as applications in advertising, publication design, corporate identity programs, information graphics, package design, posters and signs. Literature on computer technology as used in desktop publishing and computer graphics is also included. Appendixes provide annotated listings of almost 200 relevant annuals and serials as well as a directory of associations and organizations in the field. Access to titles, authors, and a finer breakdown of subjects is facilitated by thorough indexing. This work should be a valuable resource for professional designers, scholars and students of design, and librarians interested in collection development.

2 out of 5 stars Not so special.......2003-09-27

If she truly is trancing St. Catherine, then we must keep in mind that St. Catherine is just another spirit...actually a non evolved and fundamentalist dogmatic one at that. The history of St. Catherine would clearly depict this.

Spirit truly does not allow a breach of the future. For St. Catherine to give accounts of the future flies in the face of research in this field and common sense. If you know the outcome of the football game, will you play the same way?

I got that bad feeling you get when you are in the presence of a con game. I believe many people who read this book might feel the same way.

I take this book and her readings with a grain of salt.

                        4 out of 5 stars A Modern Day Exorcist.......2002-03-09

Anyone who is studying the paranormal and particularly modern day exorcisms should read this book. This is about REAL communication with the dead - not supposed fantasies or someone mouthing clues coming from who-knows-where. These are true-to-life accounts of actual exorcisms performed by Elizabeth Baron - who has over 20 years experience in many aspects of the paranormal, including intensely documented research. Read these stories and marvel... for they are all true. I found the book to be engaging and shows definite evidence of life after death.

                          Book Description

A unique crossroads for mushrooms, Kansas is populated by a blend of northerners and southerners, serves as a western frontier for easterners, and harbors a few West Coast natives.

In this book, the authors offer a myriad of how-to's when stalking and using mushrooms, from identifying an Old Man in the Woods to sauteing a tasty Volvariella bombycina. Besides providing both the Latin and common names and descriptions of 235 species found in the state, they have included 150 color photographs of common and not so common species, a nontechnical key for identification, a calendar of fungal fruiting seasons, and a list of all 548 species that have been located in Kansas. And for those rusty on their Latin, they've included a guide to the origin and pronunciation of Latin names.

Mushroom hunters will find a number of useful tips in this book, whether they want to eat their quarry, photograph it, or examine it under a microscope. And to add richness to the sport, the authors have included an overview of Kansas geography and climate, a history of mycology in the state, and practical advice for forays in the field.

With something for the novice, the advanced amateur, and even the professional mycologist, A Guide to Kansas Mushrooms provides general explanations and advice, as well as descriptions of mushrooms found not only in this state but throughout the country, particularly east of the Rockies.

This book is part of the Kansas Nature Guides series.

                          INTRODUCTION

Lying just south of the equator, Tanzania is East Africa's largest country, and an immensely rewarding place to visit. Filling the brochures are several world-famous attractions: the plains of the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro (Africa's highest mountain) and Zanzibar, with its idyllic palm-fringed beaches and historic Stone Town. Yet there's a whole lot more to Tanzania than these obvious highlights. Almost everywhere you go you'll find interesting wildlife and inspiring landscapes (over forty percent of the country is protected in some form or other) ranging from forest-covered volcanic peaks to dusty savanna populated by elephants, antelopes, lions, leopards and cheetahs. Tanzania is one of the four most naturally diverse nations on earth: it contains Africa's second-largest number of bird species (around 1500), the continent's biggest mammal population and three-quarters of East Africa's plant species (over ten thousand). Add to this the country's rich ethnic diversity, some superb hiking and other activities like snorkelling and diving, and you have the makings of a holiday of a lifetime.

For all its natural diversity, Tanzania's best asset is its people: friendly, welcoming, unassumingly proud and yet reserved - you'll be treated with uncommon warmth and courtesy wherever you go, and genuine friendships are easily made. The best known tribe are the Maasai, a pastoralist cattle-herding people who inhabit the region around the safari parks in the north, yet there are at least 127 other tribes in Tanzania, perhaps not as visually colourful as the red-robed, spear-carrying Maasai warriors, but with equally rich traditions, histories, customs, beliefs and music, much of which survive despite the ravages of colonialism, modernity and Christianity. For many years, only those with months on their hands had the privilege of really getting to know these people, but since 1995, an award-winning cultural tourism programme has broken new ground in enabling tourists, even those with little time or limited budgets, to experience for themselves local life in an intimate and inevitably fascinating way.

5 out of 5 stars Your best bet.......2003-10-04

I travelled to Tanzania with this guidebook in hand (as well as others), and it was by far the best when compared to similar guidebooks on the area. I agree with the other reviewer that there may be some inaccuracies, but that is inherent in guidebooks. I personally found all of the restaurants, hotels, and shops that I visited based on information I found in the book to be accurate (Dar, Zanzibar, and Pemba). I cannot attest to the accuracy of the Swahili phrases, as I tended to learn more from people I met than I actually used from the book. If you are debating between guidebooks, I would recommend this one over the others (especially if you are travelling to Zanzibar and Pemba).

3 out of 5 stars not very precise.......2003-07-30

I just bought this book to replace my old lonely planet, expecing to find new information on Tanzani. I have not traveled around Tanzania with this book in hand, so would like to leave the judgement on practicalities to those who have, but after quickly skimming it, I noticed the book contains quite a few factual mistakes. For instance the author says that Dar-es-Salaam is predominantly muslim, which is is completely wrong - Zanzibar is predominantly Muslim and possibly Bagamoyo but in Dar-es-Salaam the Christian-Muslim ratio is fifty-fifty at most, or he advises to bring cigarets for present if you are invited to a Tanzanian family (smoking population is really small, so it is not a common present), etc. A number of new but prominent shops/restaurants that were open since or before 2002 are also not there - Dar-es-Salaam is a quickly growing and changing city, so if the book is published in 2003 and misses new opening of 2002, it is not very up-to-date info. Swahili vocabulary/phrases section contains a number of basic mistakes (some phrases don't make sense). I wonder why such a widely used guidebook would not have someone who knows Swahili to check such basic things, which leaves me a bit sceptical about accuracy of other information.

The study of the Emancipation Proclamation introduces students to the famous document that was the beginning of the end of slavery in the United States of America. Through a variety of activities, students will learn the history of this document and explore its meaning and impact on the nation. Also included is a study of the Thirteenth, Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments to the Constitution, related to the Emancipation Proclamation.

Handouts, discussions and primary source materials are included in this study as well as two poems celebrating Lincoln and his Proclamation and an editorial cartoon illustrating the view of some Englishmen.

As students examine this historical document and how it came to be, they'll begin to understand the impact it had then and on life today

I have seven other books on pond, waterfall and stream building, and I found this one to have some of the best pictures, written instructions and techniques. It's not overly detailed, and it makes a good book for someone who would like an overview of what should be done if you want to construct your own water feature.

4 out of 5 stars Good Resource for first-time Pond builders!.......2000-03-25

This book is well-arranged and comprehensive. It's essentially a beginner's book - the language and illustrations could help even a 9-year old get started. Advice on construction, flora and wildlife it can sustain and maintenance makes planning a water garden or pond easy. This book is cheaper than other books in the same subject category. I used another book - How to Build Ponds and Waterfalls : The Complete Guide by Reid as much as I used this one while building my backyard pond.

                                    Book Description

This monograph in the Inverse and Ill-Posed Problems Series deals with linear integral Volterra equations of the first kind with variable upper and lower limits of integration. Volterra operators of this type are the basic operators for integral models of dynamic systems. The corresponding conventionally well-posed problems were subject of systematic study: existence and uniqueness theorems were proved, estimates of the inverse operator norms for suitable pairs of functional spaces were obtained, etc. Consideration was also given to quadrature methods for the numerical solution of such equations with emphasis on their specific features, as opposed to classical algorithms. Results of computations for the modelled examples are presented. This book is intended for specialists in computer mathematics, inverse and ill-posed problems, and mathematical modelling.

                                          Book Description

Previously unpublished conversations of `The Father of Modern Architecture' with such notables as Carl Sandburg, Mike Wallace, Alistair Cooke and Hugh Downs. In this magnificiently illustrated volume, Wright shares his often controversial views on art, literature, society, history and architecture. Photographs of Wright's greatest achievements accompany these provocative conversations. This book presents a penetrating protrait of the architect, exposing his humor, charm and guiding philosophy—an intense faith in the individual, the independent mind and the free spirit.

                                            Book Description

Robert Hart's forty-five year administration of China's customs service was a unique achievement. In these letters Hart speaks to us directly from a time long past in China, but a time that may seem only yesterday to a Western reader. The result is a primary source for the history of modem China and the era of foreign privilege there.

Bearing sole responsibility for the Chinese Maritime Customs as its Inspector General, Hart built up an international staff of thousands, facilitated foreign trade, gave the late-Ch'ing court its principal new revenues, and fostered China's modernity in administration, schools, naval development, postal service, and many other lines. Behind the scenes Hart was also a diplomat who settled the Sino-French war, changed Macao's status, got boundaries delimited with Burma and India, and mitigated the disasters of imperialism. His career at Peking, coinciding with that of the Empress Dowager Tz'u-hsi, represented the constructive side of the unequal treaty system and Victorian Britain's informal empire in East Asia.

The publication of the great I.G.'s weekly or fortnightly letters to his confidant and London commissioner, James Duncan Campbell, gives us an intimate, inside view of Hart's problems and methods. He appraises his employers in China's foreign office, the Tsungli Yamen, and comments pithily on the complex flow of events and personalities. He quotes the Confucian Classic but, even more, the Latin poets. His personal life is revealed--standing long hours at his writing desk, finding solace in the violin, keeping his own counsel, constantly isolated by his responsibilities. Having no confidant in Peking, he explains himself to his loyal agent in London.

The Hart-Campbell letters, after five years' editing and annotation and with an informed introduction by Hart's final successor as foreign I.G., Mr. L. K. Little, thus take their place as one of the great historical treasures that bring a vanished era back to life.
