Book Description
A tale about language, love, and identity, A Larger Sense of Harvey takes a bold stand between the traditions of American metafiction and the European epic. Set in the Greek islands, Helsinki, Minsk, and even a research facility in Lapland, the novel chronicles the life of the self-styled typer, divorcee, and impenitent (if impotent) observer Harvey Rocketsch. Beginning with his postwar boyhood outside Minsk, to his tenure documenting covert language research at a secret lab in the Arctic, the novel reveals the mystery behind Harvey's death in a freak ballooning accident over the Dvina River.
Though the novel is presented as a compilation of Harvey's private journals, the question of translationparticularly botched translationlooms large as it becomes clear that Harvey's personal accounts have been skewed by his friend, mentor, and colleague Martin Ambrose. Eventually Ambrose's translations are pit against the authentic story which is revealed despite his attempts to suppress it. The result is a narrative laced with both hilarious and gently philosophical moments as Anastasopoulos goes on to consider the nature of sex, language, and male friendship.

A Great Book to Read!!!.......2002-04-23
I loved the way the writer takes you the reader into the lives and the minds of so many different people. Because you never know quite who the narrator is at any one moment, you are never sure if you are being lied to or told the truth. "Harvey" is like a map through and into langugage itself, and the writer is your tour guide for this region of fear and laughter--with some even spicy and sexy scenes along the way too!
A surprise, a delight.......2001-10-09
This first novel is a remarkable achievement. An attempt not just to experiment, but to write something wholly different. The incredible events are only one aspect of the exploration that the book itself presents. An interest in language and translation underscores and gives shape to the ornery plot that takes the reader all over Eastern Europe. It's a complex book but in the right ways: a kind of language feast. By the end, the central figure Harvey emerges larger, as we do, for the exploration. "A word can liberate a man," he says. I'm a believer.
A Large Sense of Language.......2001-07-23
`A Larger sense of Harvey,' Dimitri Anastasopoulos's first book, is not the coming-of-age struggle nor the self-therapy worked out on the page that too many first novels tend to be. No dysfunctional family saga here, no alcoholic husband, no broken home. This book is more an acrobatic dive head-first into the intricacies of language itself. Even the locales in which the book is primarily set ... Belarus, Finland and the Arctic ... warn the reader that this is not the stuff of most debut fiction.
The main character, Harvey Roketsch, is a Belarussian grew up outside of Minsk. His 'colossal obsession' consists of minutely detailing his life in a series of journals. The idea seems to be 'to generate a world en masse ... a view into life that synthesized emotions and translated the volatility of experience into something he could decipher.' The novel is basically a selection of these journals sandwiched together. The fun starts, however, when we realize that many of the diaries have been translated into langoo-adj, a language secretly concocted at a research center in the Artic, and that the translations are not exactly accurate. While the truth tends to be distorted in the process, the careful reader will find it more clearly reflected in the discrepancies between the originals and the langoo-adj facsimiles.
The translator of the journals, Martin Ambrose, bears a passing resemblance to the bumbling scholar in Nabakov's `Pale Fire', deleting and elaborating as he sees fit. 'I'm in charge of cutting the imprecision, overabstraction and profligacy of words that engender unclean reasoning, words that distort the psychology of tongue-flappers,' he explains. His inflated sense of self-importance and off-the-mark observations account for most of the hilarity in the book.
Bete, who is in charge of the langoo-adj project, schemes to replace the organically grown mother tongues of nations with her laboratory-designed uber-language. Through langoo-adj, Bete believes that language becomes 'simple, disciplined. No extraneous letters, therefore no extraneous thought. Spartan humor develops: laziness resisted. Words are precise: hence, life is clarified and streamlined.' And yes, here we have echoes of Orwell and the various speaks of `1984.' 'A Larger Sense,' however, is too comical to make a genuine comparison.
While Anastasopolous is a deft sentence smith with a sure sense of rhythm, some of the sections get away from him and he slips into rambling. The other problem is that the mostly self-contained journals are often dislocated, spatially as well as chronologically, and give the book a disjointed feel. At times, following the narrative line is a little confusing.
In spite of its flaws, `A Larger Sense of Harvey' will reward the reader who is as interested in a metaphysics of language as in what happens next. In one of the finest passages in the book, Ambrose comments on a church procession. 'Once you realize that rituals can, at most, only honor ancient events, that they can't present biblical memories exactly as they happened, then you'll realize that rituals, written down, poetically recited or repeated, lack the event's original luster, the semblance of richness. In effect, they become empty.' Replacing 'rituals' with 'words' and adding 'experience' to 'events' (ancient or otherwise) we have a thought-provoking statement on the shortcomings of language.
A Classical Labyrinth With No Exits.......2001-07-22
A Larger Sense of Harvey is one of the most delicate and probing novels I have encountered in recent years. This work, which belongs to the type of writing we associate with Emerson, is elegant, cheerful and--to resurrect a somewhat exhausted term--utterly revolutionary.

Entertaining.......2007-09-06
This book appears to be the second book in a series. Thankfully it stands enough on its own so if you (as I did) read the first one so long ago, or have never read the first one you may lose some connections between characters, but certainly won't be lost. Gossamyr comes from the land of faery to a historical France to slay the Red Lady who is stealing faery essences, or souls. What she learns in "otherworld" (our world) is a startling revelation that faeries are just as human as we are and not immune to things like lust and treachery. The romance was sweet, understated, but certainly a part of the novel.
Unfortunately, I found the story a bit too predictable to be a keeper, and while I would be interested in reading the third book, I won't be rushing out to buy it. I'm afraid, like most sequels, this book doesn't shine as much as its predecessor.
But, if you like historical novels, or fantasy novels with rich world building, Gossamyr is a good read. It has it's moments, but like the title suggests, may not stand up to heavy contemplation.
Good plot, wierd execution.......2005-10-28
I read "Gossamyr" on the plane while I was away on business, so I was forced to finish it or stare mindlessly out the window. It wasn't bad. It's got a good storyline and interesting characters, and it's not so obvious as other Luna books I've read.
I had trouble getting into the author's world, though. For example, the slang creation bothered me. (Bone? Why not just use a different, easily recognizable word instead of creating something sort of useless to the story and then having to explain it?) It would be one thing if it was a different language, but it seemed sort of pointless.
I also hadn't read "Seraphim" so I realized, as I got through the book, that I was missing some obvious character connections that were revealed. However, I wasn't sufficiently intrigued by "Gossamyr" to want to run out and pick up the first novel in the series.
Not my favorite Luna book, but not one I would want to throw out the window either.
well paced and entertaining.......2005-08-20
Interesting dialogue and story line. There is some romance, but instead of a very physically romance, it is humorous and witty mixed in with a few kisses and a few glimpses of flesh (without graphic detail). The Ulrich likes what he sees and is obvious (vocal) about it much sooner in the story than Gossamyr. Gossamyr is interesting in that she is both able to take care of herself, yet she is out of place without being in Faery. Ulrich is much the opposite. They are drawn to travel together to Paris, and each with their own missions. The character interaction is very entertaining. The introduction into the next book of the series isn't annoyingly obvious (yeah!).
Lovely Fantasy - Poignant Love Story.......2005-05-03
Since childhood, Gossamyr de Wintershin a half faery, half mortal young woman knew that she would one day, in place of her father Shinn, rule over all of the fee in the Glamoursiege faery realm. Being only half faery, Gossamyr felt the snub from the true fee and also knew that she would only be accepted after she was wed to a fee of her father's choosing, and even then....she would never be more than half faery. She trained as a warrior and thus thirsted for a way to prove herself worthy of the impending honor.
A dangerous succubus, the mysterious Red Lady resided outside the enchanted land in her lair in Paris. This succubus was enticing the fee to her then would drain them of their essence. Upon the fee's death she would capture the last of their glimmer which would then release the murderous revenants that found their way back to the Enchanted land to wreak havoc. Because Gossamyr didn't have the Glamour of the true faery, but the wit and the fighting ability of a warrior, she was able to convince her father to let her travel to the Otherside, to take on the Red Lady and thereby save `her people'.
Back in the land of mortals, Gossamyr is impressed with the lure of the Otherside and has hooked up with a traveling companion who tempts her mortal half. He is a mysterious mortal - a soul Shepard - who has his own agenda as he seeks his own truths. In her quest to save her people, Gossamyr learns truths about herself, her lost lover, and her father that will inalterably alter her world forever.
*** This was a very good story, though I admit finding it a tad difficult to get into. I thought more than once to put it aside as I was very confused by new terms and words used in the text, but as I became familiar with Hauf's writing style, it swiftly captured my interest as the action adventure and romance kicked in. One caveat that bears mentioning is that I had read a description on the book, stating a blending history and fantasy for which I didn't find that much in the way of historical detail. On the other hand, for the pure enjoyment of a beautifully presented fantasy tale with a memorable and likeable heroine; fascinating secondary characters; along with a poignant love story that will have you reaching for tissues throughout the last couple of chapters, this is surely the ticket! --- Marilyn, for (...)---
beguiling fantasy .......2005-04-27
The world of faery has known peace for a very long time but now the realm's very existence is threatened by the Red Lady, a faerie banished to the Otherside (the mortal realm). She is stealing the essence of faeries who stay too long in Paris controlled by English King Henry and his soldiers. Shinn, leader of Glamourseige knows that Gossamyr, the half mortal-half faery, is the only warrior who can defeat The Red Lady because as a female she is not susceptible to the lure of the succubus.
Although she lacks wings and contains only the glamour from her years of living in faery, she crosses to the Otherside with the help of Shinn. She meets Ulrich who participated in a fairy Dance and lost two decades. His wife remarried and a dragon killed his daughter. He hopes to bring her back to the mortal world because he has an alacorn (a unicorn's horn) and when he gives it back to its owner he gets one wish. The pair teams up, helping each other when one gets into trouble. When she learns the truth about her origins that Shinn kept from her, Gossamyr's priorities change although she remains determined to save faery by defeating THE RED LADY.
GOSSAMYR is a beguiling fantasy that blends elements from many genres to produce a work that will enchant readers who will place it on their keeper self to reread when they want an uplifting experience. The protagonist is an amazon warrior in a besieged Paris who battles a succubus, her ex-lover, and wins the heart of a mortal who is on a quest of his own. Michele Hauf has the magic touch that she imbues in her storyline.

Another Dorsai novel.......2000-12-22
This is another Dorsai novel that further follows the image created by Dickson of a superior military warrior. This novel centers around the Dorsai warrior Corunna El Mann. He is supervising the transport of an important dignitary to a planet that is undergoing some internal conflict. When El Mann gets to the planet, political chaos occurs.
It seems that the soldiers that were trained to defend a fort have deserted to help the revolutionaries. As a result, this leaves a handful of people left to defend this fortress. There are a total of five Dorsai, one of which is opposed to using weapons. This person is named Michael, and he is in charge of the band.
As the days unfold, this novel is really a book centered around the development of characters. There is not much action going on this this novel, except for the final battle scenes. This novel acutally plays more on in the internal conflict of one individual who battles what his morals are, and what his training would have him do. As a result, the book is a great study in socio-ethical conflicts located within an individual. It is easy reading, without a lot of intense descriptions. Overall, it was just an average novel.
The book also contained the short story "Warrior". The story is very easy to read, and should be used in conjunction with other Dorsai novels. The main purpose of this story is to develop the character of Ian Graeme, and further solidify his image. Again, this is easy reading, but you catch a glipse of the unique and intelligent thinking processes that Ian contains.
Book Description
There are many legends on the planet of the Dorsai, the breeding ground for heroes. Here are two of them.Lost Dorsai: The New Dorsai Companion contains the Hugo Award winning novella, Lost Dorsai, and Dickson's classic short story "Warrior."Plus, the New Dorsai Companion contains, for the first time ever, an all new Concordance of the Childe Cycle--a roadmap of Dickson's massive and brilliant creation. The Concordance will let you know not only in which books or stories a person or place is mentioned, but will give you a brief history or biography that explains their significance in the Cycle. It's a Who's Who of the future--and no science fiction reader should be without it.
Customer Reviews:
Not bad for a dollar.......2005-04-12
In short, the novella Lost Dorsai was gripping and believable, but the short story Warrior was too vengeful and the plot was too hard to swallow. Lost Dorsai and Warrior were the first two for me, but apparently Dickson wrote several of these Childe Cycle stories. The absence of fantasy and magic reminds me of SciFi I read, and liked, in the 60s. Warrior is dated 1965, while Lost Dorsai is dated 1980.
But unlike, say, the grunts of Starship Troopers, the Dorsai are military savants who are too superior to be seriously challenged by their opponents. Dickson writes them into situations where they are overwhelmingly opposed, but they are still somehow in control. But even though they are very close to being comic book superheroes, in Lost Dorsai they have a certain dignity and restraint that makes it all sort of work. In Warrior, I couldn't sympathize with the "mission."
Highly entertaining addition, but not required reading.......2003-07-22
Like "The Spirit of Dorsai" before, this volume fills in some elements of the overall Cycle and gives us some insight into some of the smaller details, but if you skip it you really won't be missing out on too much when you consider the overall picture. Basically this is two stories, one fairly long and the other fairly short. The first one "Lost Dorsai" is actually quite good, showing the flipside of the Dorsai philosophy, about a warrior who refuses to fight, but Dickson makes the interesting argument that being a Dorsai isn't a switch you can flip on and off and sometimes having to fight doesn't mean you need to use weapons. It's one of the best written portions of the series and even if it has little bearing on the rest of the books, the book is worth the read just for that story. Also, the tale finally delves into the relationship between the famous Graeme twins, Ian and Kensie. In other reviews I've pointed out that Dickson almost milks the brother Ian to death, showing us how he suffered in the wake of his brother's death, without really showing us what he was like while Kensie was still alive. Finally we get a story that not only has both of them alive but working together and while they are still kept at arm's length to some extent, it's a better look than we've had before and more than welcome. I doubt they'll be anymore Ian/Kensie stories but this one was just about what I was looking for. The other story in the book "Warrior" mostly showcases Ian (again, before his brother died, so while he's gloomy, he's not the epitome of death he would become later) going about his duty and dispensing some justice. It's good insight into the way his mind works, although it relies too heavily on a lot of weird things happening and Ian going, "Well I planned for all of that to happen" which is a rather annoying Dorsai trait. I do have to admit his plan is clever and shows some good insight into human psychology. So while it's not essential at all, it's an entertaining way to spend a half hour or so (that's all it took me to read that story). The illustrations that accompany the first story are also interesting, and help set the mood without literally depicting what's going on on the page. My version also has a medium size essay by a SF critic that is mostly gushing praise (some of it deserved, though at points it gets a little much) but also makes an attempt to bring up themes and such in the Cycle that even Dickson might not have originally envisioned. Oh, it also has an excerpt of "The Final Encyclopedia" but I'd rather just read the book itself. So overall, like I said, it colors in some of the lines of the series and showcases those always entertaining Graeme twins, but as far as the main thrust of the book is concerned, it's not exactly essential. That doesn't mean it isn't good (it is) but don't expect any major revelations or twists. That's all.
a compilation for the fans...........2000-06-05
....crowned by "Lost Dorsai," the story of a warrior who will not fight--and yet triumphs.
It's a great addition to the amazing Childe Cycle series.......1999-11-21
The series is extremely well written, as well as the book. Much better off reading the whole series first.

As Thin As I Want To Become.......2007-02-14
This book is excellent! And,it's thin----as thin as I want to become. So many diet books become heavy, filled with superfluous minutiae about how many cacao b eans Moctezuma put into his chocolate drinks in order to get enough energy to please his harem.
We don't NEED that. I have a friend named Carlos Valle who carries all of that stuff in his head.
This little book approaches weight loss metaphysically. It's wonderful. All that's lacking is the address for the Hemlock Society in case I fail
a miracle in print.......2005-10-24
This is a clearly written book which is taken from A COURSE IN MIRACLES and helps you to lose the ego and when this happens you can begin to eat normally and eventually get to a healthy weight, not a weight loss book a life book.
Not only for the overweight.......2002-11-29
I have reviewed this book two times previously but for some reason they were not posted. Maybe the third time will be the charm...I think any serious Course student would benefit from reading this book for we all have issues with food though maybe not a weight problem. In addition, the issues raised in this small book are applicable to all addictions, obessesions and problems. And it is still in print and available if you look around.

A Charming and Authentic Book!.......2003-09-08
An American with family members who make regular trips to Ukraine, I have some knowledge of the hearty and delicious cuisine of that wonderful country. I love this book because it presents the cuisine as it actually is in the towns of Ukraine. You are not presented with bastardized, Americanized recipes, but with the authentic cookery you would experience during a visit to a normal, middle class home.
The book starts with a brief foreword on Ukrainian food traditions. In the back there is an 8-page bilingual dictionary of food terms and phrases to use in restaurants. In between, the book is packed with both traditional and contemporary recipes for everything from appetizers to main dishes to sweets and even a substantial section on beverages both alcoholic and not, and recipes for making several different kinds of beer.
I highly recomment this book.
don't waste your time with this one........1999-08-21
Excited to find the best of Ukrainian cuisine won't work with this book unless you're still on a farm in some other decade. Or you like cooking with lard, grinding meat, and of course removing organs and bones from pigs - oh, yum! The author's translations in the back of the book from English to Ukrainian for ordering meals are worth a laugh. However, I think he's serious. Pass this book up.

Book Description
Al-Farabi and Aristotelian Syllogistics deals with an important chapter in the history of Aristotelian logic in early medieval Islam and offers a unique and comprehensive analysis of the writings of the outstanding Muslim philosopher Abu Nasr al-Farabi (d. 950/51). The first part focuses on a wide range of subjects relating to syllogistic theory proper; the second part deals with its application in the context of Islamic law and theology, and concludes with an in-depth analysis of the way in which Aristotelian logic came to be integrated into Muslim political thought. The sections on syllogistic theory proper are especially important for those interested in the history of Arabic logic; the remaining sections are required reading for historians of Islamic law, theology, and Islamic political philosophy.

Book Description
HAUNTED HOUSES HAVE BEEN REPORTED SINCE ANCIENT TIMES. ARE THEY REAL? Parapsychologist Andrew Nichols earned his world-wide reputation as a phantom sleuth routing banshees, breaking curses, exorcising ghosts, and exposing cranks and frauds. In Ghost Detective, he recounts his most chilling and fascinating cases of poltergeists, psychokinesis, and apparitions. These bizarre accounts -never before published- are presented with possible explanations for their occurrence, bringing into focus the latest discoveries in the scientific search for evidence of paranormal activity, and revealing dynamic links between haunting experiences and the human mind. Dr. Andrew Nichols is Director of the American Institute of Parapsychology. He is currently professor of psychology and chairperson of the Mental Health Department at City College in Gainesville, Florida. Cover design by Scott Flagg
