Book Description

Barry Schwartz has everything: two healthy young children, a strong marriage, a house in the Colorado mountains, and a job that lets him ski a hundred days in a good year. But at thirty, still paying off student loans and struggling to make the rent, he begins to think it isn’t enough.

All I Could Get is the story of the ultimately harrowing journey into the heart of New York’s financial world that Barry and his family take on the way to discovering what exactly is “enough.” With the voice of a born storyteller and an intimate knowledge of the business of high finance, Lasser gives us stunning scenes that capture the wry banter of the morning commute, the hardball diction of Wall Street, and the rhythms of a good marriage as it hits the skids. A novel of fierce momentum, studded with instances of piercing tenderness and clarity, All I Could Get is an indelible portrait of a family driven to a reckoning, of a man poised on the brink of terrible power and unspeakable loss, of the crushing effects of envy, and of the devastating force of the American dream.

5 out of 5 stars a true-to-life, harrowing ride.......2006-02-13

A quick, tight read of what it's like, on a very personal level, to want to get ahead at the center of the high-pressure business world. Every step of the way I found myself drawn into the protaganist Barry's world, understanding why he made the decisions he did; I rooted for him even when the moral shortcomings of his decisions were clear. The evocation of the world of high finance was vivid, alluring and frightening at the same time. I felt this was how this world really worked. In the end a book that is both instructive and highly entertaining.

3 out of 5 stars Greed is Bad.......2003-08-22

That's the message of "All I Could Get" and it's about as subtle as a two-by-four to the head. The book is a morality tale about how getting caught up in greed and power leads nowhere...as long as you have a conscience, like Barry the main character does. In Barry's quest to make money, he betrays everyone from his boss to his friends to his wife and by the end has nothing to show for his efforts.

Lasser's writing is nothing special, but it does the job adequeately. The obvious problem for everyone without an MBA is following all the Wall Street lingo. I tried to follow along as best I could, but the technical issues of bond trading don't really matter to the STORY, so I was able to overlook that.

My other gripe is that the book is too short. The plot is always moving along so quickly that there's no real time for me as the reader to settle down and get comfortable with the characters. In the end all the other Wall Street guys come off like clones of each other (maybe that was the point) and no one except Barry has much depth to them. If Lasser had slowed down and developed the secondary characters more I think this would be a much more satisfying novel.

What I really like is the ending. I love the ambiguous ending where things may or may not work out for Barry. It's a lot better than a trite Happily Ever After ending and not as depressing as a sad ending where we know things won't work out. It's the sort of ending I can feel good about as a reader, but not TOO good.

I recommend reading this book and Lasser's previous novel, "Battle Creek", which I enjoyed more because I'm much more of a baseball fan than a Wall Street fan. "All I Could Get" is another good effort by Lasser and I hope he keeps it up.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2003-07-11

I'm actually not a trader but I like good novels and this was one of the best of the year. It's not only an expose of the Wall Street world---these people who like you to think they're busy running the world yet can barely run a normal life. Lasser has written a great morality tale for the end of the last century and the begining of this new one. Smart, funny and dead on, it makes it hard to wait for the next book of this rising star.

2 out of 5 stars Why should we care?.......2003-05-03

Scott Lasser wants us to care about him and his selfish co-workers, but he never goes beyond making them one-dimensional characters. The people he introduces were so stereotypical, I wondered if it was just bad fiction.

5 out of 5 stars All I Could Want.......2002-09-17

I read Battle Creek and I think Scott Lasser's second novel shows that he is a rising star among new authors. Lasser has identified what is, for many of us, the central conflict in our life: namely, the balance between providing for our family and seeking an enjoyable and meaningful career. Although it is an issue which receives considerable press these days, Lasser's characters offer a refreshing and lively new vehicle to present this conflict. Lasser's main man, Barry Schwartz, contemplates the question what are we willing to do--what are we willing to risk, to go beyond paying the bills to lift our families up into that top 1% of society that no longer has any concern about money? Although Barry stumbles to a conclusion, after putting the book down I was unsure of what the proper balance should be. That's what I liked the best. It was an enjoyable read and it left me feeling a bit uneasy. I look forward to Lasser's next work!

    Book Description

Ambitious in its scope and provocative in its content, the saga of Count Saint-Germain is a monumental feat of the imagination. Chelsea Quinn Yarbro's powerful and evocative novels have captured Saint-Germain throughout his long existence, from the temples of ancient Eygpt to our present century. Now the count's endless travels bring him to seventeenth-century Peru, where he finds solace for his loneliness in the arms of an Incan priestess. But mighty Spain has conquered the Incan people--and brought the dreaded attention of the Holy Inquisition to the New World.

Why would anyone want to read this garbage?
Do the world a favour and stick copies on the bonfire this Autumn.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Storytelling.......2004-12-20

My exposure to Chelsea Quinn Yarbro was accidental. I saw one of her books and was attracted by the title, enough to open the cover and read more. I was intrugued by the main character, le Comte de St. Germain, as he is sometimes known. A mercurial figure indeed. I was also familiar with a certain sect devoted to St. Germain who believe he has lived in many different eras. This is not something Ms. Yarbro made up. The books can be still found in "esoteric" book stores (as few as there are) and are usually green paperbacks with purple ink and the text is, well, boring.

Not so Ms. Yarbro. This novel, and I have not read very many, set in 17th Century Peru during the conquista, is alive and fresh. The historical perspective she gives is fantastic and I feel myself transported back in time. Yje characters are unique and develop well with the story, even the Conte de St. Germain, who even though endowed with some awesome supernatural powers, does not serve as an excute to cop out on the plot. It was a satisfying experience for me.

5 out of 5 stars Ninth in the Saint-Germain series........2003-02-22

Or tenth, if you count "Out of the House of Life", which is primarily a spinoff novel about Madeline de Montalia, but which does include some of Saint-Germain's early history.

Or thirteenth, if you count "A Flame In Byzantium", "Crusader's Torch", and "A Candle for d'Artagnan", the spinoff series about Olivia Atta Clemens.

This book, set in 17th century Peru and Mexico, details what was happening to Saint-Germain while Olivia was experiencing the events in "A Candle for d'Artagnan". It is one of the best of a very good series; as usual, Yarbro's historical research is excellent, and her characters (with the exception of Roger, who seems somewhat lacking in the personality department; what does this guy do for fun? Thirteen books and counting, and I have no idea) come alive, even if I did find Saint-Germain's willingness to turn the other cheek after Dona Azul had Oaxetli poisoned somewhat out of character.

For those unfamiliar with the series, the Saint-Germain series is a series of historical horror novels in which the hero (and he IS a hero, not a villain or even an antihero as is so common in vampire fiction) is a 4000 year old vampire. The vampiric aspects are very subdued; he needs blood to maintain his strength, which is formidable, and is susceptible to running water and sunlight, but both of these weaknesses are significantly less pronounced than in much vampiric fiction. As long as he is wearing shoes with some of his native earth in the heels and soles, he can mostly ignore them; even without, he hardly bursts into flame when exposed to sunlight; in this book, he is crucified for two days in the Mexican summer, and while seriously injured, he survives (no spoiler, considering that several of the previously written books are set in later time periods). Basically, without his protective shoes, he sunburns extremely easily and extremely severely. The books are well-written, and even the worst of them so far have been well worth the read.

4 out of 5 stars Chelsea Quinn Yarbro.......2001-07-01

I have read just about all of of Ms.Yarbro's books and especially love the St. Germaine character. She peaks your interest in his advertures and love life. The book was slow in starting but immediately became a cannot stop reading one. I have been reading Ms.Yarbro's books for years and had lost a contact in purchasing them. Thank Goodness for Amazon and the internet. I have now completed my set of the St. Germaine chronicles as you will.I think anyone who starts reading her books will become a fan as I am.

    Sincerely,

    Norma

    5 out of 5 stars A well-paced must-read with something to please everyone!.......1997-01-08

Alright, I have to admit it, if a vampire is in a book, I simply must read the book. I've read all sorts of vampire-literature -- from books with grammatical errors and no plot to speak of to, well, Yarbro's novels. Yarbro's novels are top-notch and although classified as "horror," the horror actually stems from our realization that a vampire could have more humanity within him than most "mortals" do. Yarbro's novels include something to satisfy everyone: a well-researched historical setting (I learned more history from Yarbro's novels than I ever learned in school -- sorry Mrs. O'Keefe!), a heart-wrenching romance, plenty of action between a hero and lots of of nasty folks, and, my personal favorite, a passionate and dashingly handsome vampire! Yarbro's writing style is intelligent and, in just the perfect spots, very suspenseful (and, hey, no grammatical errors)!A word of warning is in order: once you've read one of Yarbro's books you'll be eagerly awaiting her future releases (thank goodness Amazon.com Books has electronic notification of new releases, huh?). A novel that you will keep you thinking long after you finish the book!

5 out of 5 stars a timeless cookbook for the ages.......2007-03-15

Well, there's not much I can add to what has already been written on these pages regarding this fine book. As with other great cookbooks which contain much more than recipies, I read it cover to cover before attempting any of the many dishes. There are a few awkward moments with the translation, but other than the totally baffling 'Hunter's Sauce' (pg. 60), your own good sense will guide you through these. It's not, however, the recipies that are the only value of this book, but, as others have mentioned, the delight is in the details, and the working knowledge of the author (you'll understand how the French can eat such rich foods and get away with it - "remove every atom of fat."). Madame will guide you through each painstaking step from beginning to end, from choosing meats and vegetables, seasonings, serving suggestions... in what is a comprehensive, and highly educational course in French cooking. Good cooking takes time and effort, and those willing to put forth the effort will find that Madame has taken the time to inform us, perhaps as never before. Happy cooking

If you want to learn how to cook this is the book for you. It is a brilliant book that will make you love cooking and of course eating!!!
It will also send you in an imaginary trip to France!
If you take your time and make one recipe at a time, you will adore the end result.
This book has no pictures and it is a "manual" to be followed page by page.
If you can't cook well after following the recipes in this book, you never will!!!!
It changed the way I thought about cooking well.
This book is also a great addition to your cook book library.
          Enjoy!

Not only does it have recipes, but it goes into very basic cooking, what utensils are needed and why, and how and why to do various things while cooking. I am a novice at cooking but found this book to be very helpful and interesting!

          5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!.......2006-08-23

There is so much to learn from this book -Mme Evelyn de Saint-Ange has a tremendous gift for explaining how to cook even simple things - for example the egg section. She gives the reader a basis to build skills on - something many cookery writers do not. She is very precise about timing, and preparation, and will always tell you - 'Here is the critical moment', and, also, how to deal with it. The book is dense with information.

The only quibble I have with the translation, which in every other way is great, is the use of deciliters, when surely a liquid measurement in mls would be so much easier for readers who aren't American, and wouldn't be measuring in the American way anyway!

I would have to say that, as an Australian, I was introduced to French cookery, by 'Mastering the Art of French Cooking'and 'Cooking with Pomiane' in the 1970's.

'La Bonne Cuisine de Mme E. Saint-Ange' ranks right up there with those favorites, and more recently, 'Patricia Wells at Home in Provence'.

              Book Description

The eighth-century Latin Gospelbook known as the Lindisfarne Gospels, with its tenth-century gloss (the earliest surviving translation of the Gospels into the English language), is one of the great landmarks of human cultural achievement. Like all such icons, or important archaeological sites, it repays revisiting. Successive generations approach them with new questions and new technologies, bringing to light fresh evidence or finding different ways of 'reading' what we thought we knew already. This study seeks to do just that, taking advantage of new photography and technical analysis as well as assessing previous work in the light of more recent studies and archaeological finds.

This book sets the Lindisfarne Gospels within its socio-historical context, during one of the world's formative periods of transition - from the Graeco-Roman world to that of the early Middle Ages. The melting-pot of the multi-ethnic British Isles, with its international Christian context stretching from Frisia to the near-East, is reflected in the pages of the Lindisfarne Gospels, as part of an attempt to achieve a cultural synthesis in which all peoples could find a place - a visual reflection of the international Oecumen. In Northumbria the rallying point for this new identity was the figure of St Cuthbert, his cult and the role of the church of Lindisfarne (originally a Celtic mission to the Anglo-Saxons) playing a vital role in the faith, power and politics of the region. The questions of where and when the Lindisfarne Gospels were made are addressed, but just as importantly the 'why' is explored, in the context of new research concerning the technical innovation of its maker, his spiritual motivation and the needs of the society in which he worked.

There is more than enough of interest for both scholar and intellectual tourist. Brown's sleuthing and exposition shed light on the Lindisfarne Gospels, sacred manuscripts in general, Insular art, and the place of important books through the ages. This is a read to be savored.

An excellent, in-depth scholarly study of a beautiful work of art. If you are interested in details about the paint, the layout, the artists, and the monastic world it was made in, then this is the book you want. The 32 color plates reproduce the major pages of the Lindisfarne Gospels, as well as examples from other Insular manuscripts. The CD that comes with this book contains a key to manuscript sigla, and a table showing the textual arrangement of the Lindisfarne Gospels, with selective collation. The CD does not contain any further plates of the manuscript, unless they are hidden where I cannot access them.

              5 out of 5 stars A thought-provoking and informatively extensive study.......2003-10-07

The Lindisfarne Gospels: Society, Spirituality & The Scribe by Celtic and Anglo-Saxon cultural history expert Michelle P. Brown (Curator of Illuminated Manuscripts at The British Library), examines this important and influential eighth-century book in the light of both theological analysis and revelations of the latest archaeological finds. Marvelous color plates as well as black-and-white photographs wonderfully enhance the exhaustive, college-level text, which is a master piece of scholarship studying the genesis of the Lindisfarne Gospels, and how this classic was originally physically prepared, written, and bound, as well as the significance of its art, the nuances of its scripted text, and more. A thought-provoking and informatively extensive study, The Lindisfarne Gospels is also available in a soft-cover format.

An interesting history of the art of hand printing books. Fantastic pictures.

              5 out of 5 stars A real gem.......2004-10-27

In a mere 48 pages, author Michelle Brown, currator of illuminated manuscripts at the British Library, has put together a wonderful expose of the Lindisfarne Gospels, one of the beautiful illuminated productions to come out of the Irish monastic/scholarly traditions of the so-called Dark Ages. One can wonder how an age that could produce such exquisite books as the Lindisfarne Gospel could ever be called 'dark'.

The Lindisfarne Gospel is a piece of art, and a piece of history. It is a significant milestone in the history of Celtic and Anglo-Saxon development. Brown's book has illuminations of a more modern sort on every page, pictures and graphics, illustrating the beauty, grandeur, and history of this great work. The Lindisfarne Gospels helped to define Christianity for the local culture, connecting it with the larger world of Christendom.

The Lindisfarne Gospels' artistry lies not only in the beautiful pages, but in great attention to detail throughout. The colours and pages, the hinges and covers, the stitching and construction all testify to an unparalleled care for craftsmanship. The influences of Celtic and Anglo-Saxon imagery is clearly seen in the illuminations and construction, which in turn influenced the further development of those traditions. The calligraphy was influenced by Roman, Greek and Germanic lettering, blending things together in an astonishingly complementary way.

This book would be a gem for the pictures alone; with the brief, insightful text by Michelle Brown, the book becomes a real gift to the reader.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to read study of an illuminated manuscript.......2000-09-13

The scope of this book is best described by the chapter titles: 1) Lindisfarne and Saint Cuthbert 2) The men who made the manuscript 3) The text of the Gospels 4) The script 5) How the manuscript was made 6) The great decorated pages 7) The smaller initials 8) Some comparisons (with contemporary works) 9) The later history of the manuscript

The text is lively, including, for example, an old riddle describing the wax table used for sketches. The Anglo-Saxom instruments used in illuminations are shown in a photograph; you aren't expected to have detailed knowledge of medieval tools. The color plates of the Gospels are magnificant. The art shown for comparison includes not only other manuscripts but metalwork etc.

This book is not only an introduction to the Lindisfarne Gospels but is a good starting point for illuminated manuscripts in general.

                            Book Description

This volume deals with one of the most controversial issues in writings about early medieval history: the presence of Scandinavians, known as Rus, and their impact on Eastern Europe during the Viking Age. These studies give for the first time an extensive and detailed picture of the Norse population in the East by using, besides written narratives, a wide range of archaeological sources. The seven chapters survey the background, then depict the first Norse centres and sites of Norse colonists in the north-western Russia; further chapters contain information about the great number of settlements in the Volga region and, finally describe the activities of a group of Rus that resulted in creation of the principality of Kiev. With the help of numerous illustrations the contents of the book clarify many problems and support the conclusion that in the East real Norse societies existed that were an important and natural part of the Scandinavian värld.

2 out of 5 stars Information good - quality of book poor.......2005-08-19

This was a text book for a college class. The content of the book is a good introduction to the subject. As a design student, I feel I benefited from reading it. But, the book itself is cheaply produced. 100 pages, only a few black and white images of poor quality. (Actually, they look like poor photocopies.) The cost of the book is more expensive than many of my other text books, which were printed on quality paper and included lots of full color, photographic images.

There have to be other books with similar content that are better value for the money.

                            Book Description

The loss of a child is every parent’s most unspeakable fear. Gordon Livingston survived that tragedy not once but twice in a 13-month period, losing one son to suicide and another to leukemia. Only Spring, based on the journal he began keeping when the family received six-year-old Lucas’s diagnosis, traces the excruciating ordeal of witnessing his child’s courageous battle and the agonizing cycle of faith lost and hope regained. As a memorial, Only Spring will introduce you to a remarkable child whose legacy of hope and love can enrich each of us. As a portrait of survival, it will infuse us with the strength and faith to confront the most profound challenges in our lives.

Gordon Livingston writes with clarity and honesty about the illness and death of his beloved youngest son, and the aftermath he and his family endured. The book faithfully captures the roller coaster of emotions that accompany the trajectory of illness, as well as the benumbed unreality of such a shocking loss when death occurs. A beautifully brave account of moving into and through a fog of despair, doubt, and guilt, eventually giving way to a ray of hope and light.

Joey, an only son, never dreamed that his actions would so affect the life of his mother. The story begins in the early hours of the morning as she witnesses Joey's arrest by federal agents. This heartrending incident is followed by days and weeks with more revelations of Joey's betrayal by trusted friends, incompetent attorneys, dishonest employees and corrupt officials. As events unfolded, even a mistake in his past surfaces to add more life changing results for Joey and his mother. Joey's mother, like all mothers, waited and wondered if her only son would survive the betrayals, conspiracy and mistakes of his past.

5 out of 5 stars Great read for any parent.......2006-08-10

Just read this, it was a gift. Now, normally, I wouldn't even read a book that I received as a gift. However, in this case, I'd happily recommend this to any mother and/or grandmother out there looking for a fellow traveller in life, who has a son (or daughter) with troubles and who understands the complex family issues, the tug-of-war between love and tough love, the emotions wrought by finding the balance between helping, loving, and letting go of our independent children, who oftentimes make choices they and we regret. A troubled yet uplifting story, in the end it highlights the silver linings and personal growth that can come from a difficult and emotional family event.

Without giving away the frequent and well-crafted plot twists, the story revolves around Maria Clement's (and her family's) reaction to her son's sudden and unexpected fall from grace, arrest, eventual incarceration, and return to his business and family. From a loving mother and grandmother's point of view, Clement's semi-autobiographical (?) portrayal of her experience throughout this period -- with her son, her family, and other trusted relationships either abrogated or newly bonded -- will endear you to her story and help you through yours, either now or in the future.

                                Book Description

Bedford-Stuyvesant and Harlem, the only son of a man who worked hard to support his family, but also tyrannized them with violent outbursts and regular beatings. His childhood made Johnson tough and angry-and fueled his determination to be a successful black man in a white world. Eventually, he became one of the biggest names in New York television news. A man about town, the father of four, Johnson had money, fame, and success. Then something happened. His mother, whom he loved dearly, died in his arms, and his father was diagnosed with lung cancer soon after. Stunned, Johnson stepped back and realized that he had been so driven to succeed that he had forgotten the values-and the people-that truly mattered. But there was still time. So he quit his lucrative job and hard-won career to take care of the father who had tormented him so many years ago. ONLY SON is that story, the tale of a father and son who must untangle the bitter memories of their past in order to say goodbye...with love.
