Very highly recommended!.......2002-11-26
What a wonderful story of love lost then found. I teared up in more than one place. This is a couple who would sacrifice everything to protect each other, even if doing so meant never being together. The heroine clearly matches the hero in bravery.
Exciting romantic suspense -- Highly recommended.......2002-11-02
Four years after his wife's supposed death, Jim Wolfe shockingly encounters Lily at an airport. Stunned, he can only let her go once again, as she slips away with Eric Von Rass, her grandfather's right hand man -- the man selected to be her next husband. Jim does not suspect that Lily's reactions are an effort to save his life from her cruel grandfather, a man who will stop at nothing to get his way, including murder.
Her grandfather has plans for Lily's life. The last of the Phillips, Lily must fulfill her destiny to provide him with new heirs unpolluted by the likes of Jim Wolfe. His ruthless manipulations destroyed Lily's marriage, leaving her to believe herself widowed for years. Her grandfather holds her son hostage in assurance of her compliance to his will. But Lily will do anything to get her son to safety.
Author Barbara Clark once again pens a novel of startling emotional intensity and danger in EMERALD HEAT. Clark's talent sparkles in this world of orchards and romance. the result is a memorable sensual delight that juxtaposes jungle lushness and unspeakable cruelty. Characterizations are vivid realized, especially Lily and Jim who must find a way to healing and forgiveness in defiance of a man who rules his country and his family with an iron fist. The result is an exciting romantic suspense readers cannot put down. Highly recommended.

OUTSTANDING READ.......2005-03-29
I ran across "Silent Strength of Stones" by accident and enjoyed it so much I went searching and found "The thread that Binds the Bones". I have enjoyed both books greatly and have been anxiously awaiting continuations of these family tales, as both books sort of leave you in limbo with expectations of more great adventures of these characters and families to be explored in future books. Unfortunately, the author has not chosen to expand on these adventures; however you must try these 2 books if you can get your hand on them. I have read my copies several times and am sure they will get more use. Unfortunately none of Ms Hoffman's books have risen to the same level of these classics....
Very good.......2003-06-02
A really enjoyable novel; the best of her work that I've read. Here's hoping the forthcoming "A Stir of Bones" is a sequel.

incredible imagination.......2003-04-29
this is not hoffman's best written book, but that is a minor drawback, since her second best is still better than many other author's. if you think of the exposition being a form of writerly shorthand, so to speak, it isn't such an issue.
the wonderful thing about this book is the world building. the families, their history, their talents are completely thought-out, made to seem completely real. behavior, actions, reactions, all ring true to life.
just fyi, in case any of the previous reviewers review, and for new readers, there is a semi-sequel, _the silent strength of stones_. now, if hoffman would only write a THIRD installment (and forth, fifth, etc.).
Close to Home, and Far Away.......2002-10-24
I picked this up by chance, was entranced by it, and immediately sought and bought everything I could find by Hoffman. Exactly the kind of story that I love, in that twilit area where This-world touches some Other-world---think of Zenna Henderson, think of Ray Bradbury, think of Marion Zimmer Bradley, but different, edgier, more close-to-home and more far-away... It's the story of an extended, inbred Family where half-magical, half-psychic powers are inherited, and one's status within the family dependent on the strength of those powers. Into this mix comes an outsider with powers like and unlike those of the Family, in love with a semi-outcast daughter, who together seem to be a hope for a very different future. An exciting adventure, with exact and careful characterization and evocative, beautiful writing. Its sequel, The Silent Strength of Stones, is just as interesting, and I am eager for the next Family novel.
This is one of those books I bought because the cover was interesting---not that we judge a book by its cover, but let's never forget that the cover is an integral part of the total book experience...

Super Reader.......2007-08-02
This compilation contains :-
Howard's Letter to Miller
The Hyborian Age
Conan : The Thing In the Crypt
Conan : The Tower of the Elephant
Conan : The Hall of the Dead
Conan : The God In the Bowl
Conan : Rogues In the House
Conan : The Hand of Nergal
Conan : The City of Skulls
This is not a story as such, but an account of the fictional history of Howard's world through the ages, to the time of Kull and Atlantis down to the entitled time when Conan ran amok. Quite nicely done.
4 out of 5
The Thing in the Crypt
A young Conan has been fighting wolves, and they are still after him. He finds a door in a rock wall, but it leads him to an encounter with a skeletal mummy thing. He learns why DnD clerics use maces against the undead, and manages to get out of there.
3 out of 5
The Tower of the Elephant
Conan is in thieving mode here. In a tavern, he is asking the assembled crowd of nogoodniks why no-one has stolen a famous jewel from this tower.
They tell him because it is guarded by some very nasty things.
He, of course, investigates, and meets a master thief attempting the same thing.
Humans, animals, a giant spider and a wizard are to be encountered, not to mention an alien.
3.5 out of 5
The Hall of the Dead
De Camp completed this from an outline of Howard's that was found. Conan has left Shadrizar to look for the treasure of Larsha, and a squad of soldiers, out to arrest him for other larceny are on his trail.
He deals with most of them, but the leader, Nestor is not dead and follows him into the city, meeting him in the treasure room after he deals with a giant slug.
They leave, quickly, when mummified warriors come to life and the building starts collapsing. Their loot is not too stable, and not enjoyed for long.
3 out of 5
The God in the Bowl
Conan is indulging in a bit of thievery and is busted by the local constabulary, right near a dead body. Conan proclaims his innocence, which they find hard to believe, but are not going to fight him over it.
Some digging reveals a local wastrel nobel is involved, up to ears in debt, but he ends up with a few problems with the God In the Bowl, of the mortal kind. When he orders Conan restrained, the constabulary lose a few body parts, and others more than that.
3 out of 5
Rogues in the House
Conan is yet again in trouble because of drinking and wenching. A crime has gone wrong, and a woman he was with has betrayed him to the authorities.
He is offered a way out, if he will kill a man. This man is Nabonidus, The Red Priest.
The only problems involve breaking in, a huge hulking ape-man servant, and then The Red Priest himself and his powers.
3.5 out of 5
The Hand of Nergal
Another story fleshed out from an outline.
Conan is fighting as Turanian irregular cavalry when large mystical bat creatures attack the force he is fighting with. Their morale breaks, leaving them easy prey, all except the Cimmerian who happens to have found The Heart of Tammuz amulet.
A local scholar sends his girl slave to find Conan and hire him to help him get rid of the evil sorceror using The Hand of Nergal to summon the bat creatures, and worse.
Conan is not able to do much, and is a lot of trouble until the girl arrives, and is able to employ the amulet. As a reward, he takes her with him, out of servitude.
3.5 out of 5
The City of Skulls
A pretty ordinary story. Conan's Turanian warrior band is destroyed by Meruvian raiders. He is taken captive there, with a friend and a girl. A spider-idol monster causes some havoc.

A great collection of stories!.......2007-07-28
Conan starts is a letter written to Howard by De Camp which explains some history of Conan's world and the first "story" in a terribly, terribly boring retelling of the history of the tribes in this world. But once you get past these two (or skip them altogether) the short stories are GREAT! I'm sure the stories are as good today as there were when Howard first wrote them as far back as the 30's. Conan meets a lot of great characters and adventures and I absolutely loved reading these stories. I can't wait to get another Conan book.
Succeeds despite the contibutions of Howard's "helpers".......2005-12-11
Robert E. Howard's famous barbarian hero journeys among the nations of the Hyborian Age in this anthology of stories, seeking his fortune and reveling in bloody adventure. I devoured several of these anthologies back when I was in junior high school and was pleasantly surprised to see how well they hold up now. His prose is muscular and direct, his characters brutal and equally direct, as befits the world in which they live. I was surprised that Conan is actually a secondary character in some of the original stories, such as "The God in the Bowl," a Sherlockian tale with the Cimmerian as one of the suspects. Although all of the tales written by Howard, either whole or in part, are strong, the pastiches produced by Lin Carter and L. Sprague de Camp are weak. The lengthy "City of Skulls" is particularly egregious for its careless dependance on wild coincidence--wandering through the darkness of the sewers, Conan and his companion chance upon a secret passage that leads directly to the chamber of an evil king just as he is about to sacrifice the heroine. How sloppy! Howard's "Rogues in the House" is the highlight of this collection.
Not a perfect collection, but still a must-read........2003-08-15
CONAN is the first of over a dozen "numbered" Conan volumes from Ace. Though this is the book that launched a thousand love affairs with the writing of Robert E. Howard, hardcore sword and sorcery fans often look askance at the material behind the striking Frazetta cover. The controversy begins with the authors' credited; CONAN is written by Robert E. Howard, L. Sprague De Camp and Lin Carter. Though Howard was originator of the Conan tales, he only receives sole credit for four of the eight pieces in the book, and even those four are edited, sometimes heavily, by his "co-authors." The other four stories are either posthumous collaborations, or outright pastiches.
This doesn't mean that CONAN isn't a terrific read. It says a great deal about the strength of Howard's writing that it's still powerful even when passed through an editorial filter. The stories built on fragments and outlines left behind by Howard also possess some measure of his literary spirit. The Ace volumes are an attempt to organize the saga of the barbarian hero Conan's life into chronological order, filling in the gaps left after Howard's untimely death, and as such are a worthy endeavor, regardless of what the naysayers declare.
CONAN begins with the first part of an excellent "historical" essay by Howard, "The Hyborian Age," in which he lays out in great detail the development of Conan's contemporary world, casting back thousands of years and working his way forward. Like J.R.R. Tolkien and H.P. Lovecraft, who created meticulous pseudo-histories to fuel their imaginations, Howard created a foundation of the fantastic elements in his Conan stories. As a result, the world through which Conan moves - beginning with his escape from slavers in "The Thing in the Crypt," and followed by his first adventure as a self-taught thief in the classic short story, "The Tower of the Elephant" - seems as real as any true historical period. This goes a long way toward helping the reader understand why the Conan tales have endured.
For those who only know the character of Conan through the Arnold Schwarzenegger film, CONAN THE BARBARIAN, the literary Conan may be something of a shock. Howard's Conan has none of the Nietzschean baggage of the filmic character, but is instead a rough-hewn warrior lad (Conan is not even twenty-one by the conclusion of CONAN) with a moral compass forged in the straightforward traditions of his Cimmerian kinsman. Conan acts as need or desire directs him, and though he can often be counted upon to do the right thing, he's also short-tempered, violent and downright bloodthirsty. Whether his enemies are noblemen, wizards or hideous creatures, Conan does what's best for Conan, and this frequently means blood will spill.
Once again, the purists may discourage anyone from reading these altered versions of Howard's stories, but in truth only the most discerning eye will notice the shift from original and pastiche and back again. Rather, one's attention is squarely on the barbarian hero at the center of these lusty, combat-fueled adventures. Conan leaps to life from the printed page, no matter who put the words in place, and regardless of complaints, CONAN is still a great place to start.
The Voice of a Cimmerian.......2002-06-05
Besides Robert E. Howard's suicide at the age of 30, the greatest tragedy of this brutally talented writer is that his work has not enjoyed the literary praise and societal acceptance that it so clearly deserves. Howard is one of the most overlooked authors of the last century, in part due to academia's refusal to seriously study the Fantasy genre. Conan, Howard's greatest character, lives, prowls, "wenches", boozes, adventures, and cajoles among the paperback pages of this first Conan book, due entirely to Howard's distinct narrative voice.
The reader feels the flexing muscle and sinew, the weathered and tanned skin, the animal reflexes, the very strength in Conan's mercenary grip when they read these short stories - beyond Howard's brilliance at character creation, the very narrative voice is written in the tune of savage ruthlessness. No matter your sex, you can't help but boil with testosterone and reel in the wicked pleasure of cleaving cut-throats with a broadsword, because the simple and powerfully persuasive narrative voice places you in Conan's world. Howard's delicate and meticulous word choice not only provide the uniqueness of his voice - a style rich with texture, details, and cinematic imagery - but it also provides the barbarian lens by which we view his world.
The stories are often dripping with blood, but the imagery is so vivid and artistic it in no way diminishes the quality of the text. The knocked out teeth and the crimson sprays seem natural, because they're natural to Conan. Few authors have ever displayed such a profound ability at placing the reader into a character's blood, brain, and hormones. Conan, after all, is not the stereotypical Hollywood action hero - he is a character designed with his own unique combination of strength and flaws. Flaws found in all humanity. He may be built and wired like a Siberian tiger, but he is plagued with a deeply embedded fear of the supernatural. His temper often gets the better of him. When times are good and the riches spill from his saddlebags, he's a boastful braggart that earns the unforeseen whack at the end of a dark alley. When times are tough, he hits the goblet. He's everything we want to be and one of us when we need him to be.
Howard's voice and style make all of this possible. This first book in the Conan series displays that voice of reluctant role model as good as any other. Finding a copy may be difficult, but for the reader that enjoys Fantasy written at the depth and quality of literary genre fiction, the search and the expenditure will yield a bountiful harvest.

Good Group Study - not too heavy.......2001-09-21
We are using this book in an introductory Men's Bible Study. Most are new believers, and get a lot out of this as it gives a lot of background. It has helped give them more hunger for the rest of the Bible. Short and to the point. I highly recommend it - particularly in a similar setting.

Book Description
Bull Threshers and Bindlestiffs is a panorama on a continental canvas: the Great Plains of North America, stretching from Texas to Alberta. Onto this surface the author lays the large features of regional practice in the harvesting and threshing of wheat during the days before the combined harvester--harvesting with binder and header, threshing with bull thresher and steam engine. Into the picture he places the key figures who accomplished the task of gathering the grain--the farm men and women, the custom threshermen, and the bindlestiffs, or itinerant laborers. Affectionately he sketches the small details of folklife that comprised the everyday work and culture of the wheat belt--building shocks, loading racks, constructing stacks, pitching bundles into the separator, hauling water to the engine, drinking deep from the crockery water jug.
Bull Threshers and Bindlestiffs is a profusely illustrated study of a complex, vigorous regional culture concerned with the production of wheat--a culture that centered around the annual harvest and declined with the advent of the combine. This is an examination of the interaction of culture, environment, and technology with import for the fields of agricultural history and regional history. More than that, with its grassroots research, its descriptions of tools and customs, and its lavish illustrations, it is a re-creation of a proud phase of regional life previously captured only in yellowed albumen photographs.

You have permission to publish this article electronically or in print, free of charge, as long as the bylines are included. A courtesy copy of your publication would be appreciated.
For an excellent cookbook on how to bake scones, corn bread, croissants, pretzels, popovers, quick breads, tortillas, pizza dough or traditional loaves, then this may be the book for you! With more than 250 recipes for both sweet and savory breads, check out this book.
Beatrice Ojakangas is a chef and author to numerous cookbooks. Some titles include: "The Great Scandinavian Baking Book", "Scandinavian Feasts: Celebrating Traditions throughout the Year" and "The Great Holiday Baking Book". She has also appeared on television with Julia Child, on her television show: "Baking with Julia Child", as well as also being on Martha Stewart's Living. She has written numerous articles for newspapers and magazines including Cooking Light, Family Circle, and Bon Appetit. She lives in Duluth, Minnesota.
The recipes in this book are easy-to-follow. Ojakangas gives excellent step-by-step tips on how to mix and knead the dough and how to handle whole grains. In the introduction, there are numerous tips to help the novice cook develop a passion for baking breads. There is even a section on Flour sources, in case you are unable to locate a specific flour in your neighborhood.
The book is broken down in chapters depending on the type of breads you are looking for, including: stir-and-pour breads, no-knead casserole breads, whole wheat breads, rye breads, oat breads, barley breads, cornbreads, multiple grain breads, buckwheat breads, triticale breads, sourdough breads, coffee breads and sweet rolls, whole grain breads with fruit, whole grain breads with vegetables, cheese breads, little breads, flatbreads, quick breads and more!
Despite no color photographs in this book, there are some illustrations to help show you what to do.
The recipes all sound delicious, and my favorites are: apple-filled brioche, seven-grain bread, malted Christmas bread, English farmhouse loaf and orange-rye casserole bread.
If you are looking for an all-purpose book on baking any type of bread, then I suggest you pick this book.
Found some terrific recipes in here!.......2003-11-15
I came across this book at the public library, and I brought it home because the bread recipes looked wholesome and delicious... and because I was intrigued by the casserole bread chapter. I never saw so many recipes using that method! I tried a casserole rye/potato bread and we all thought it was delicious, and I esp. appreciated the lack of kneading it really saves on time.
This book is now in my wish list for Christmas.... I want more time to pick and choose than the library can give... there is nothing like the smell of fresh bread baking!

A nice collection of recipes. Not the best info on the ingredient........2005-09-12
`Rice, The Amazing Grain' by Marie Simmons and `Risotto' by Judith Barrett and Norma Wasserman are two older books (14 and 18 years respectively) on a most interesting culinary subject. In fact, to most of the Asian cultures, rice is THE culinary subject, dwarfing all talk of wheat and its principle derivatives, bread and pasta so dear to the western European culinary palate. (The other side of the coin may be that Italian and French cuisines can claim some level of primacy over Asian cuisines in that both have an important role for rice, while Asia ignores wheat and its vassals.)
While the first book deals with rice as a whole, including, per its subtitle, `Great Rice Dishes for Every Day', the second book deals only with the classic rice dish of northern Italy. On the face of it, therefore, one may think that the first book is more valuable than the second, but, for serious cookbook collectors, I think that is not the case.
For starters, the author claims that `Rice, The Amazing Grain' started out as a book on the grain alone but, like an unruly child, it grew into a cookbook. From that introduction, I expected a major treatise on rice, its cultivation, varieties, and nutrition. Instead, we get something which is far inferior to what I found in the recent book, `The Ultimate Rice Cooker Cookbook' by bread baking Guru Beth Hensperger and culinary colleague, Julie Kaufmann. This book on a very specific rice cooking technique actually has more useful information on varieties of rice than this book devoted to the whole grain.
So, it took me some time to warm up to `Rice, The Amazing Grain', especially as Ms. Simmons did nothing to really show me how amazing the grain was. I grew to like the book a bit more when I discovered a clear explanation of the differences between a pilaf and a risotto, aside from the fact that one was born in Milan and the other in the Levant. (The difference is in the variety of rice used and the fact that all liquid is added at once to a pilaf at the outset of cooking). I was also very glad to find a good chapter on rice salad dishes. Most good salad books contain few if any recipes for rice in salad, much fewer, for example, than for rice in desserts.
So, my final word on `Rice, The Amazing Story' is that it is only worth your while if you are exceptionally fond of rice as an ingredient. If you are a foodie and your interest is not specifically centered on rice, you are much better served by getting `The Ultimate Rice Cooker Cookbook' and `Risotto'. I recommend you get both, since, while risotto can be made in a rice cooker, it is, by its nature, something that is done with lid off and with constant serving. So, what a rice cooker gives you is ersatz risotto, with the same ingredients and flavors, but maybe not the same great creaminess. You can imagine the difficulties by visualizing cooking Risotto in a microwave!
On the other hand, if you really like rice and Italian cooking, `Risotto' is probably a book you should really own. It is only slightly dated as when it says that risotto ingredients and recipes are rare. Today, you can't go a week on the Food Network without someone making a risotto. And, arborio, one of the rices of choice for making risotto is on the shelf of every single supermarket I visit these days. What is really good about this book is that it deconstructs the risotto cooking process so that you can very easily see the similarities and differences between each recipe. All recipe ingredients lists and procedures are broken down into up to four different elements, the Riso (rice), brodo (broth or stock and wine), soffrito (oil and aromatics), and the condimenti (veggies, meats, poultry, or fish).
The varieties of risotto are pretty much what you would expect, with classic, cheese, vegetable, seafood, meat and poultry, and dessert (liquor and fruit) risottos. It is also not surprising to find a chapter devoted to leftover risotto, as many varieties of rice have a habit of stiffening up as starches are reabsorbed into the grains. The Chinese have created whole families of dishes of fried rice for dealing with leftover rice. Also not surprising in the western cuisines that the leftover of choice for rice is in fritters and pancakes.
As someone who has successfully made risotto on more than one occasion, I will vouch for the statement that risotto is NOT a difficult technique. It is you main dish, it can even fit into the favorite 30 minute limit for fast cooking. The only tricks to risotto are, like stir frying, prepare EVERYTHING in advance and stay with it. It needs you constant attention for up to 20 minutes. In fact one service this book does over the usual Batali / Bastianich / Hazan / Scicolone etc recipe is cut a few minutes off the time usually specified for good risotto making. This may not be much, but it helps us get under that mystical half-hour limit.
I suggest you go to the Encyclopedia Britannica for your scoop of rice background and get the two books on specific rice techniques. `Rice, The Amazing Grain' is a good choice if you really like rice, but don't want to store a lot of books on the subject.

This book was just what the doctor ordered! Simple, clean and elegant sketches that can be copied and colored in with your own choice of fabrics and colors. Perfect for the home sewer or someone who needs fresh ideas for a room design. Every one who has seen my copy wants one for their sewing library.
Product Description
Presents a collection of 371 designs for draperies, canopies, & bedspreads that can be used as a designer's working tool, catalog, or idea book. With it, the designer can effectively display a selection of solutions for window & bed treatments to a client without drawing dozens of preliminary designs. Tracings from the book can even be sent directly to the workroom. Sketches are annotated only where necessary to explain the design or suggest a certain material. Designers will find the index particularly useful. There, each sketch appears in miniature, page-referenced for easy retrieval.

Book Description
Wilma Wake recounts her own remarkable transformation as she followed her inner voice over the last three decades. Rejecting her parents' traditional Christianity, moving through Eastern and New Age philosophies, and now embracing a relationship with the Divine that stresses social commitment, Wake reflects the longings and confusions that are part of growing to spiritual maturity.
A car crash in 1972 left Wake in constant pain, pain that led her to yoga and breathing exercises. Deep, mystical experiences began to arise that troubled her rational mind. She underwent strange, psychic states of consciousness and sought to understand the mystical forces causing them. Wake studied Christian and Sufi mysticism, participated in Unitarian-Universalism and Episcopalianism, and finally found her perfect home in the Swedenborgian Church, which offered rational explanations for her nonrational experiences.
