Book Description
Artrage is a novel about a respected attorney and well-known art collector, Mace Caslon, who walks into the Metropolitan Museum of Art and throws acid on Universal Woman, a forty-one million dollar Picasso. The resulting chaos and media circus deeply examine not only one man's psyche but also a nation's fascination and curiosity about art, celebrity, and cultural values.
Customer Reviews:
Satire and Crime in "Artrage" by Everett Aison.......2006-09-09
"Van Zant closes his folder and looks at Mace, who remains silent
and impassive.
`A blue-collar kid who makes it as a top lawyer and a serious
collector. . . trashes a forty-one million dollar Picasso. Mr. Carlson,
you are on the cutting edge of inconsistency.'" (Page 24)
There is no question that Mace Carlson did the shocking crime. The hard part is the why. Also hard is the fact that in this review, it really isn't possible to say what the crime was without blowing the book. Even though, for the reader, the crime happens early on, to know in advance the specifics of the crime would remove some of the shock value. Suffice it to say that the crime is intense and no humans or animals were hurt by it.
Emotions are something else entirely. Mace's action propels him into a prolonged stay at the Rothko Suite of the New York Police Department's Art Crime Unit. With much of his time spent in solitary confinement, he has a lot of time to contemplate his action. He also has plenty of time to contemplate how his action has affected others including the son of his former lover. His case provides the fodder for a media firestorm as his action becomes a polarizing statement for both sides in the art world.
Part satire, part crime novel, the resulting read is a mesmerizing book that pulls readers along at a frantic pace. Occasionally, very graphic in terms of language, this is a novel that considers the current art world and finds things less than satisfactory. Rich in depth and character, the novel works on all levels and as a result is a very good read I wish I had read sooner.

A Thought Provoking Novel.......2006-04-06
Mace Caslon seemed to have it all. He had been a brilliant student with a full scholarship to Williams College, graduated top fifth from Yale Law School and now he is a full partner in one of the most respected law firms on Wall Street and a serious collector of contemporary art. Yet one day he walks into the Metropolitan Museum of Art and throws acid on Universal Woman, a Picasso painting which just sold for forty-one million dollars. The question is why? This is something everyone wants to know. His act puts him in the middle of a media crazed frenzy. Everyone has something to say including television personalities, artists, museum officials, collectors, dealers, lawyers, a U.S. attorney looking to enter the Senate, psychiatrists, ex-lovers and anti-art demonstrators. Everyone wants their time in the spotlight...everyone wants to know why.
Artrage is not a mystery of who-done-it but why-done-it. Thru an in depth character study Aison takes a close look at our society and it's fascination with so called "celebrities" and their fifteen minutes of fame. He lampoons the art world, art connoisseurs, the media and our society's remote control personality which cause us to latch onto whoever is in the spotlight at the moment and forget about it seconds later when the next "celebrity" comes along. Aison has created a fascinating novel filled with interesting characters and a thought provoking storyline that will leave you thinking about it long after you finish reading it.
Artrage surprise.......2006-01-19
Artrage is an amazing exploration that takes a seemingly simple act of vandalism and expands it into a brilliant and witty examination of today's cultural perversions. The author has managed to skewer the art scene, TV shows, politics, sex - you name it. I was dazzled by his ability to move from one scene to another without any of the conventional transitions. As a reader I wasn't bothered by the author's refusal to give in to a pat explanation for the initial "crime." Aison is a true original.
:"Artrage" is delightful and thought-provoking........2006-01-19
I opened "Artrage" and very soon found myself hooked. Here's a combined realistic portrait, caricature, and merry send-up of the whole current Manhattan culture mix. I kept seeing one icon after another, most with pie in their faces or on their behinds,, but also a number of individuals ---- Mace, Margo, Nick (especially) ---- who are sympathetically drawn and who, at times, touch the heart. That's quite a feat, and it provides some fine hours and good lingering thoughts to ponder.
Revisit Camus.......2005-11-27
An intensely engaging story, skillfully structured. Everett Aison's "Artrage" unlocked sensations I long ago encountered with Camus' "The Stranger": Mystery, Ambivalence, Motivation; and a powerfully peculiar appreciation that the world I'd anticipated is far from rational.

Chaos Unleashed upon your Mind!.......2007-01-06
The Games Workshop chaotic pantheon has always been an inspiring, and at times frightening, expose of evil and horrors. This book was a delight, written with concise detail accompanied by memorable art. I have followed the GW chaos line since the release of the Realm of Chaos books nearly 20 years ago. Those two books are, and always will be, for me the height of GW's chaotic catalog. This book is a perfect edition for anyone wanting to delve into the dark realms of the GW universe without all the game stats. An incredible book that is written with such exactness and detail that one might imagine they might have really acquired an ancient and forbidden text like the Necronomicon. Worth every penny! The only reason I resisted in giving 5 stars is simply because I remember fondly the art of the Realms books, which at times has been duplicated here. It stands out over the new pieces of which many just do not have that feel of an ancient evil text.

Amazing!.......2007-03-03
This is the first book I've read written by Paul Hogan. A collection of articles he wrote for various scientific journals and short stories - along with some personal anecdotes - this work is created to make you think. Mr. Hogan seeks to debunk common beliefs regarding AIDS, the hole in the ozone and exposure to radiation. Regarding the latter: he states that scientific research actually shows that exposure to small amounts of radiation is beneficial. He points out that many scientific "truths" are actually political machinations and gives us the information we need to prove his point of view. As a person who prides herself in learning all I can about various things, it was a remarkable piece of luck that led me to buying this book. I definitely will want to pass this book around and let others read it. You should, too!
This book may actually change the way you think........2002-11-11
Most of us are slow to change our opinions about "big issues." That is a normal human trait. This book may actually cause you to do that about various issues, including the problem of AIDS, the issue about CFCs and the "Ozone Hole" and certain other trendy issues of the day.
This book is a reprint of various science articles Hogan has written, a couple of science fiction short stories, and a few personal anecdotes. If you are a Hogan fan, you'll like most of this book. If you are not a Hogan fan, you very likely will STILL like the science articles. They are dazzling, well-written, and understandable to the layman.
The most important part of the book is Hogan's analysis of the AIDS controversy. He points out numerous facts that the ordinary news media has refused to tell us. For example, no one has ever proved that the HIV virus causes AIDS. When you culture the HIV virus and try to infect a chimp or other animal, there is not a single case of the animal contracting AIDS. Nor are there any documented cases of a human being contracting AIDS by being infected with the HIV virus, unless such person was either a drug user, a hemophiliac, or a member of a similar risk group. This defies "Koch's Theorem," a basic premise of biology, which says that being able to predictably cause a disease (i.e. AIDS) by infecting a host with a virus (i.e. HIV) is a basic requirement for concluding that the virus causes the disease. If the "HIV causes AIDS" theory fails this test, then why do we believe that HIV does in fact cause AIDS? Hogan suggests some answers, and it's not pretty, but it's pretty darned thought-provoking. I am no scientist myself, but I will admit that Hogan managed to force me to "think outside the box" of conventional wisdom on this one.
Similarly, Hogan's article "Fact-Free Science" questions whether CFCs have caused the "Ozone Hole" or, in fact, whether the "Ozone Hole" even actually exists as a man-made (or a dangerous) phenomena. If you are an environmental activist who believes this, at the very least Hogan's book will give your belief structure a good workout. It will make ordinary people question.
Hogan consistently tries to think outside of the box. This is a recurrent theme in most of his writing. Sometimes he succeeds, sometimes, in my opinion, he fails. (The "Justice System" in "Voyage to Yesteryear," another one of his novels, was idiotic, and its economic system was asinine.) But at least he is thinking, and trying to make YOU think. That's more than most writers ever do.
This is a book well worth reading and owning. I have bought copies for friends, who are sometimes angered and sometimes stunned, by the facts Hogan brings to light. I would say that he made them think as well.
Recommended.
Once again hogan blew me away.......1999-06-02
As Hogan is my favorite author, it's no surprise that Rockets, Redheads and Revolution was a pure delight. Even though it makes one think long and hard about one's opinions. It opens one's eyes on a variety of subjects; the Soviet Union and the Space Race, AIDS, the ozone layer, the theory of evolution and offers some thoughtful, but delightful "stories", as well. What can we do about bad, evil people? Read and see what you think of Hogan's "solution." If you think you know all, read and think again! Is it politics, or the media, or are we just not paying attention? If you want to challenge yourself, don't miss this one. And if you like this one, don't miss Minds, Machines and Evolution, a previous work in the same vein.
You've GOT to read this book!.......1999-05-12
This book will challenge your assumptions. No, change that -- It will shake your belief system to its very core. This is not a book for the faint-hearted, or the mush-headed, because this book will actually expect you to THINK.
And oh, by the way, Hogan will entertain you with some delightful stories for your efforts.
Some will dismiss this book because they wrongly interpret one of Hogan's essays as pro-creationism, but it isn't. It is much more radical -in the good sense of meaning "getting to the root"- because it dares to ask science to look at the evidence and come up with a better explanation than the standard evolution theory. But he is not a creationist. He understands how science is supposed to work; he does not accept the supernatural or the irrational as a means to explain how the world works. The same is true for his essays on "ozone depletion" and on AIDS. He asks questions that others have been suppressed from asking. He takes some controversial points of view -- which some people don't even realize exist. He asks us to open our eyes, and look at the facts. I wonder how many of us will have the courage to look. As Hogan draws the analogy, how many of us will be like the bishops who refused to look through Galileo's telescope, and will deny the existence of those things that don't fit with our parochial view of the universe.
It's not all science and politics, though. There's plenty of humor and warmth. His story "Madame Butterfly" is a wonderful exposition of the effect of "random acts of kindness". The tales of his struggles to restore a house in Ireland are bitter-sweet, like a cool pint of Guinness.
So pull up a barstool. Take a sip. It'll sharpen your wits.
A good author gone bad.......1999-05-08
I've liked all his past books, but certainly not this one. Some of the fiction is good--but I had already read it elsewhere. The non-fiction, though: He is asserting that HIV doesn't cause AIDS, he basically supports creationism and he's saying that ozone depletion is nonsensical. If they were well-supported positions I could accept that from a SF author, but they are only well-supported by very selective use of evidence.
Book Description
In Jacques Ppin Fast Food My Way, the man who taught millions of Americans how to cook shares the techniques he honed in the most famous kitchens of the world to show you how to create simple, special meals in minutes. In this companion volume to his new series on public television, Jacques shows you how to create great-tasting dishes ranging from stunning salads such as Tomato and Mozzarella Fans to Suprme of Chicken with Balsamic Vinegar and Shallot Sauce to his breathtaking Almond Cake with Berries, all special enough for company, yet easy enough for those weekday evenings when you have no time. Fast food Jacques's way involves no compromises in taste but saves you hours in the kitchen. His Instant Beef Tenderloin Stew, for instance, not only is far faster to make than traditional versions, but tastes brighter and fresher. With concise, clear directions, Jacques shares the secrets of his kitchen. He teaches you how to season a salmon fillet perfectly and cook it in a low oven, right on the serving platter. You'll learn how to make a satisfying homemade vegetable soup in seconds, a baked potato in half the usual time, and a succulent roast that takes minutes, not hours, to prepare. He also shows you how to create elegant meals from convenience foods: a bean dip that will keep guests coming back for more, silky soups, and caramelized peaches made from canned peaches. With Jacques Ppin Fast Food My Way at your side, the best food is always the simplest.
Amazon.com
Over time, in his cookbooks, and on his TV series, Jacques Pépin has taught people how to cook simple, fully flavored dishes--food that reflects his French training while embracing American informality. Jacques Pépin: Fast Food My Way takes this approach one step further by providing 100-plus recipes for a wide range of delicious, meant-to-be fast dishes. These include Stuffed Scallops on Mushroom Rice; Chicken Breasts on Mashed Cauliflower with Red Salsa; Pasta, Ham, and Vegetable Gratin; and Apple, Pecan, and Apricot Crumble. The "my way" of the title can mean the use of time-saving tools (Pépin uses pressure cookers to achieve easy stews like his beef short-rib, mushroom, and potato dish) and convenience foods (canned black bean soup or sweet potatoes for new soup versions). Generally, though, the Pépin approach emphasizes the use of foods that are themselves quickly cooked, like chicken breasts or beef fillet and that can be made flavorful with equally fast-to-fix accompaniments, like his salsa mayonnaise or his tomato-olive sauce.
Fast is, of course, a relative term, and readers will find more than a few dishes in the book that may require more time or attention than they're willing to spend on a daily basis. But overall, the book offers enough easily made recipes, and super-time-saving formulas, like Instant Vegetable Soup, to make it a true cooking resource. --Arthur Boehm

Makes You Look Fabulous.......2007-08-18
I am very far from being a great cook. I have, however, been able to impress so many guests in my home with these recipes which practically make themselves. All this due to the genius of M. Pepin. Highest possible recommendation. And it's fun, too!
Fast and Wonderful Food.......2007-05-12
Jacques Pepin uses cooking and food to love people, and it shows in this wonderful and usable book. The recipes consistently reflect simple but important techniques, such as grating the onions rather than chopping them in the "Fridge Soup," or "Instant Vegetable Soup." You can't get much simpler than "Grapefruit Gratinee," yet the flavors meld delightfully.
This book goes on the shelf beside my favorite 3-4 time-tested, proven, yet fun cookbooks. I appreciate Jacque Pepin's contributions to cooking, and so do my family!
Making delicious, home cooked meals couldn't be simpler........2007-05-07
This cookbook may not be the all encompassing tome that your grandmother may have used for her home cooking, but it provides the reader with various simple to make recipes nonetheless. The recipes found in this book require few steps from start to finish and use ingredients that you can find at your local market. You could plan a multiple course meal, from appetizer to dessert, and impress your friends and family with minimal effort. The underlying philosophy in this book is that fast food doesn't have to be empty calorie junk food.
Worked better (for me) in conjunction with the (5 star) PBS DVD series.......2007-02-26
I picked up this book because a friend recommended it, and because I knew of Pepin as a contemporary of Julia Child, so I figured I couldn't go too far wrong. However (as the editorial review so discerningly mentions) some of the recipe titles and ingredient lists didn't seem promising to a first year cook who was stuck in "reheat takeout/deli food in microwave" mode until recently. and the food photography didn't help in most cases, either - eveyrhing seemed to be taken at an odd angle with a fish-eye lens. So I put FFMW up on a shelf in the back room, figuring that I might someday find it more in line with what I was looking for in a cookbook.
Then I happened on a PBS cable channel rebroadcasting a FFMW episode late one and I tuned in to see Pepin in action. Well, it was a revelation. Pepin was a true class act, and just seeing him in action was a culinary education. He was interesting, informative, modest and witty, and he put a 4 course dinner effortlessly and without fuss. Plus, the dishes he prepared looked fantastic. I watched another episode the next week, and the same thing happened again.
So I went back to my bookshelf, pulled FFMW down, gave it a serious look, and realized (smack palm to forehead) that once I had actually seen Pepin cook (as most purchasers of the book would have), then every thing in it made sense and was quite useful and compelling. The value had always been there. But as a beginning cook (and an American unfamiliar with this style of cooking) I had needed Pepin's "voice" to make it work for me. That's probably my failing, not Pepin's or his editorial staff, but I have to review my experience with the book, not what *should* have been if I were more seasoned in the kitchen.
Since then I have made several dishes from the book (and twice put together an entire menu on my weekend) and I can attest that this is a great culinary resource for people who want to eat well - but who can't deal with MTV style celebrity chefs like Rachel and Giada. I've ordered the two DVDs and am looking forward to seeing more of Mr. Pepin in action.
good book.......2007-01-09
my wife likes this book very much, the title pretty much covers the contents: quick and nice-tasting recipes.

Motts victorian plumbing fixtures for kitchen & bath.......2000-04-07
Motts victorian plumbing fixtures book is a very neat book to read about early plumbing fixtures for your kitchen & bathroom. The plumbing fixtures in the book has toilets that used at least 10 gallons per flush. The new toilets from Kohler that look like 1890s plumbing fixtures uses only 1.6 gallons a major difference. I think a plumber that loves old plumbing fixtures will get a big kick out of it and the price in that year. The kitchen sinks are different today, they have a wall hung sink. The ones by Kohler are self rimming.

Ed McClanahan's hilarious classic introduces us to writers and revolutionaries, hippies and honkies, gurus and go-go girls, barkeeps and barflies, as well as Carlos Toadvine, aka Little Enis, the All-American Left-Handed Upside-down Guitar Player, among the characters he has encountered in thirty peripatetic years of wandering the fringes of the academic and literary worlds"working the Visiting Lecturer in Creative Writing circuit"from his native Kentucky to the West Coast and back again.

A Blast From The Past.......2007-09-12
An overage hippie I met in Frankfort, Kentucky recommended this book to me at the infamous Downtown Bar and Grill - no grill, just bar. I will be in Frankfort next month and I will thank the gentleman for recommending this book. It takes me back to my youth, after my return from Vietnam and fleeting involvement with the Left while an undergraduate. The girls were easier and a little hairier than mainstream chicks. McClanahan hits the Redneck and Leftist cultures right on their noggins - a wonderful and funny read. The essay on the Panther gathering is great.
"Famous People" made me laugh and made me cry. . ........1999-06-04
If you ever feel nostalgic for the '60s - or any other good times and special friendships in your life - read this book. McClanahan is funny as can be, generous, and sentimental. You can only love it!

In 1872, President Ulysses S. Grant sent O.O. Howard, widely known as the "Christian general", as an ambassador of peace to the western Indian tribes. Famous Indians Chiefs I Have Known is Howard's account of his journey. He tells of his peace agreement with the great Apache chief Cochise; describes his pursuit of Joseph and the surrender of the Nez Perce chief, who became his friend; and provides a poignant glimpse of the defeated Apache war leader Geronimo, selling canes and autographs. Equally impressive are his portraits of Winnemucca of the Piutes, the Sioux chiefs Red Cloud and Sitting Bull, and his descriptions of meetings with Washakie of the Shoshones, Pasqual of the Yumas, Antonio of the Pimas, Santos and Pedros of the Apaches, Manuelito of the Navajos, three Indians women--Sarah Winnemucca, granddaughter of the Piute chief, and Mattie, her sister-in-law--both of them powerful peacemakes in their own right. Included are chapters on the Seminole chief Osceola and the Modoc chief Captain Jack, famed for their resistance to white domination. In the introduction, Bruce J. Dinges, editor of publications at the Arizona Historical Society, discusses Howard's career and sets his book in historical context.
