Rasta Heart: A Journey Into One Love
ASIN: 1900715783 |
Book Description
A Jamaican retooling of Dante's Inferno, this literary thriller tells the story of Jason Lumley, a native Jamaican living in Miami, Florida, who returns to his homeland when his politician stepfather is murdered. Accompanied by his girlfriend, Nicole, who offers an echo of Beatrice, Lumley meets up with a mentor Rastafarian and a locksmith named Virgil who accompany them through the garrison ghetto area of Standpipe. In his quest, Lumley encounters former acquaintances and earlier manifestations of himself that offer bracing commentary on the sexism, homophobia, and corruption that have replaced the nationalist dream.

Great Book, great writer.......2004-12-20
This is a very good book. Ilearned a lot about Jamica, reggae and rastas. I recommend this book.
"The I that I-dureth for I-ver".......2004-08-23
Geoffrey Philp is, first and foremost, a poet because his writing is always poetry even when it's short stories and novels. His sense of language in his novel "Benjamin, my son" makes you feel what the characters are feeling and and get a rich sense of the Jamaican setting from the Standpipe ghetto to the beautiful coastal beaches. The characters are so well drawn that their actions seem totally appropriate and necessary even when they are most surprising -- and there are surprises. Jason, the main character is a wonderful mixture: an Americanized Jamaican with a Rasta past who still loves Jamaica, a law breaker and a rights' defender, a young man filled with confusion about his father's identity and his feelings toward him and a fierce loyalty and sense of duty toward his mother. Jason is clearly the character who is at the center of everything, but Papa Legba, the old Rastafarian (Jason's spiritual father) who verges on the supernatural, and the noble girlfriend Nicole are both essential to who Jason becomes as he explores his stepfather's murder and his own heart. The picture of Jamaica is devastating. It is gorgeous and ugly, joyous and disparing, honorable and corrupt. This book deserves a wide readership to learn about Jamaica and to see truths about the human potential to adjust to uncertainty, complexity, and contradictions, but, most of all, to relish The beautiful writing of Geoffrey Philp. Who else can put words like "chupsed," bumbo claat." "smady," and "idren" in a novel and make them sound so good?
What We Read Books For.......2004-07-14
Benjamin, My Son reminds us of what we read good books for. There is the taught pacing of the mystery/thriller as Jason, albeit with some reluctance, goes back home to find the murderer of his father, a local politician. There is the excellent writing that is at the same time symbolic and seamless. Thus, the book can be read as an allegoric homage to Dante's Inferno with the requisite levels of hell played out on the mean streets of Jamaica . For best symbolic effect, pay close attention to the naming of names in this book and keep your King James Bible handy. At other times, the book becomes music to the ears as Philp, a poet of the first order, captures the rhythmic speech of the people and nails the local color of their island without yielding to the impulse to stereotype. Philp knows what he is writing about. The rastaman/mystic Pap Legba is particularly well drawn, as well the various characters from Jason's childhood in their present adult forms, including the older cleaning lady who took his virginity. The book is dead on when it comes to depicting people and their motives. Finally, there is the message that resonates long after the book has been put down--boys need their fathers to become men; and fathers are not always as evil as they may seem. Now brothers, on the other hand, don't come off looking so good, but you'll have to read the book to find out what I mean. Benjamin, My Son is a whopping good read.
benjamin, my son.......2004-02-06
this book is wonderful. such a talented author with great intuition and clarity of thought. this book is soon to be on best sellers list! : )
Book Description
At 12 months old, Benjamin was a normal baby. Betwen 12 to 18 months though--and possibly due to an adverse reaction from a vaccine--Benjamin's language and social skills detoriated rapidly and he began to turn inward. Up to this point, Benjamin's story follows the unfortunately familiar pattern of children who are diagnosed with autism. "Gift from My Son," however, is a story of autism unlike any other.
Avoiding the behavioral therapy approach that is so popular, Lindelien learned to meet Benjamin at his level, as an individual, and was rewarded with insights into the mind of an autistic child that include an altogether new theory about the role of left versus right brain dominance. She also reveals a number of natural medicine therapies that reversed many of Benjamin's worst symptoms.
Customer Reviews:
Spiritual journey through raising an autistic child.......2005-02-04
I was relieved to read Keli Lindelien's embrace of her autistic son's psychic abilities and her courageous spiritual journey through entering his world on his terms instead of the usual lamentation of the dreaded A diagnosis. This is not to say that parenting an autistic child isn't more difficult than raising a neuro-normal one. Take it from an autistic reviewer who shall continue to remain childless!
Lindelien's journey describes the transformative disruption of raising an autistic child. Parenting such a child upsets all icons of conventional success and easy creature comforts, every one of which she enjoyed until her son Benjamin started to develop autism--from the pleasant family life to the career satisfaction and fulfillment she was enjoying. Like any genuine cataclysm, Benjamin's autism forced a tectonic shift on everybody involved. Everyone in her family was forced to go deep inside themselves, look themselves and each other squarely in the eye (make non-autistic eye contact, as it were!), and be genuine with each other, rather than run for cover. Her story is one of blessing and synchronicity. This book is no sniveling war story about the tragedy of autism and a parent's alienation in a callous world.
The book unfolds from the author's psychic awakening to her psychic and then spiritual reawakening through learning to communicate with her non-verbal but incandescent son, Benjamin. She describes the regression of this heretofore normal baby after he was given the MMR shot. I have read about met all too many children who have regressed similarly after being given vaccines containing thimerosol.
She describes the treatments and methods that worked for her in nurturing and raising him, and those that didn't. She also describes how mother, father and daughter grew together in a new way to embrace the challenge of Benjamin's autism.
The congruence of psychic abilities, synchronicities and beneficial treatment modalities for Benjamin made a lot of sense to me. Benjamin is not the first autistic child I've heard of or known with psychic and healing abilities. I think that the author is right that autistic behavior is due to oversensitivity of one kind or another. On the other hand, though autists are almost invariably more sensitive and empathetic than we appear, not all are empaths in the way that Benjamin is. It is often difficult us to channel our untoward sensitivities in a creative and fulfilling way without the help of more pragmatically high-functioning people around us--usually family members or teachers. Lindelien's approach to this is inspired.
On the minus side, the book wore a little thin toward the end, where the author wafted off into philosophical speculations. Her family's and her own personal journey interested me the most.
At the end are some useful parenting tips and practical appendices, on toilet training and behavior charts. Even more of this kind of useful information might be helpful in the next edition.
Book Description
The Creator Of Thomas Covenant Adds Eight New Wonders To The World.
In his first collection of short fiction, the bestselling author of White Gold Wielder presents eight superb stories, including "Gilden-Fire," the famous "outtake" from Illearth War, and two brand new novellas written especially for this edition. Enter a world of mystics and unicorns, angels and kings -- all realized with the same dazzling style and imagination that has made Stephen R. Donaldson a modern master of the fantasy genre.
Daughter of Regals is a fantasy novella concerning a unique royal line and an unusual conception of magic.
The Conqueror Worm is a deliciously creepy "horror" piece in which havoc is wreaked by one lowly centipede.
Ser Visal's Tale begins as a simple story told over several flagons of wine at the local inn, this novella ends with a surprising twist.
Gilden-Fire is the famous chapter about Korik of the Bloodguard and his mission to Seareach that was part of the original manuscript of The Illearth War, but omitted from the published version.
Customer Reviews:
Short form not his strength........2006-06-03
Truthfully, I found these pieces lackluster. I felt they had very little of what makes Donaldson so strong as a novelist. Somehow the short form never gives him the chance to create the worlds for which he is so justly famous.
I was particularly disappointed in the first two stories, the longest in the collection. "Daughter of Regals" was quite predictable, and "Gilden-Fire" read like a failed sketch for Illearth, rather than a story set in its mythos. I did enjoy the book more as it progressed, and the stories towards the end were the strongest. I was particularly fond of "Animal Lover" and "Unworthy of the Angel". "Unworthy of the Angel", to my mind, started to approach the quality of the novels-- it was bittersweet, surprising and well-crafted.
Recommended for readers who are already fans. If you have never read any Donaldson before, then pick up Lord Foul's Bane or A Man Rides Through instead.
LOVE IT!.......2003-04-05
I LOVED the book! I like all of them though my favorites happen to be Daughter of Regals, Ser Visal's Tale and The Conquerer Worm. But I liked Unworthy of Angel and Mythological Beast a lot too. Overall, just read the book. I found them all interesting (except Animal Lover, which I didn't read yet hehe) and there's something for everybody.
The Conquerer Worm isn't really a fantasy or sci-fi story at all- it's the shortest (I think) and it shows how much trouble a centipede causes. It has a psycological "creepiness" abput it and I loved it. It is more about developing the characters than anything.
I LOVED Daughter of Regals because of the complex storyline and all the twists it has.
Ser Visal's tale has an unexpected ending- tho it took me a few minutes to realize it. I was like *GASP*. I found that telling the story through a storyteller was interesting.
Gilden-Fire is great because I loved Thomas Covenant and it ties in some info about the bloodguard that is not in The Illearth War. Great read but might be a little confusing for anyone who didn't read the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever.
Eight stories, no two in the same setting.......2002-03-25
"Daughter of Regals" - Magic, in this land, is the art of manipulating images of the Real: the Wood of the Ash tree, Wind, the Fire deep in the earth, or images of Real creatures: the Basilisk, the Wyvern, the Phoenix. Such magic is inherited by those who descend from some Real man or woman: someone who can shapechange into a Real creature. The Regals who unified the three kingdoms of Canna, Nabal, and Loden into an uneasy realm are such people. Now Chrysalis, on this night of her 21st birthday, must ascend to the Seat in full view of the realm's nobles and take her Real shape and her place as Regal, or watch the Realm shatter. And she alone knows that she's already failed once. (Excellent story, taking place in the single night that will mark Chrysalis' ascension, death, or flight, told by her.)
"Gilden-Fire" - This tale of Korik of the Bloodguard and the mission to the Giants of Seareach was cut from THE ILLEARTH WAR, not because the sequence isn't good, but because 1) Donaldson needed to cut about 150 pages, and 2) using Korik as the viewpoint character caused problems when set beside Covenant's Unbelief. Enjoy; Korik fills in some of the background of the Bloodguard as lagniappe.
"Mythological Beast" - Norman lives a perfectly sane, perfectly safe life as a librarian, in an age when violence has been eliminated by eliminating the causes of fear. Not that many people can read, or that anyone uses the library. He can't understand why the new nub of horn on his forehead doesn't register as anything odd on his biomitter, or why nobody seems surprised by his other gradual changes.
"The Lady in White" - The narrator, Mardik the blacksmith, tells the tale of how his 'mad' dreamer of a younger brother came to be blinded, in rescuing him from the mysterious Lady in White, who had lured many men to their deaths in the Deep Forest.
"Animal Lover" - The narrator is a cyborg government agent, for whom serious injury just means a few more experiments with new equipment. In this age of overpopulation, genetic engineering is outlawed, and the government subsidizes anything that'll act as a pressure valve: slamming cars around a racetrack, game preserves. But the exclusive game preserve the agent's asked to investigate has a *far* higher death rate than normal, and seems to advertise only by word of mouth. The narrator's the best pick, since he'll be inclined to root for the animals rather than slant his report the other way, if no criminal activity is going on.
"Unworthy of the Angel" - The title comes from the saying, Let no man be unworthy of the Angel who stands over him. The narrator, a guardian angel (literally) whose memory of each assignment is wiped away by the next, has the unsavory task of coping with a charge who's selling his soul to become a better sculptor. This isn't a blatant diabolical contract in brimstone, nothing so crude; the sculptor just has to be willfully blind to the consequences of his actions. But an angel can't help you unless you give him permission...
"The Conqueror Worm" - Welcome to the not-quite-right home of Creel and Vi Sump. He's got a good job, but maybe a dead end; the place has some expensive electronics, but a water-damaged ceiling; and so on. Tonight, a centipede is loose in the apartment after they've both been drinking at a party, and they're trying to kill it. (More of a character study than anything; the only story in the collection that's not to my taste.)
"Ser Visal's Tale" - Some of the wild young men of the town regularly buy Ser Visal's drinks at the tavern with the deaf bartender, to hear tales that, while not quite openly heretical or seditious, wouldn't help him any with the Judica or the King. Now they want to know the *real* story of Dom Perralt's excommunication, in this land that's become a theocracy in one generation.
Sweet Spot.......2001-05-02
The jewels of this collection are "Ser Visal's Tale" and "Daughter of Regals". These stories don't just create anticipation and uncertainty in the telling, they also generate complete conviction when all is told.
Donaldson's shorter short stories don't give him enough scope for his forte, i.e. unfolding layers of the truth. In order to shine, he needs time for his characters to be acting on incomplete information at first, but eventually realize what is going on. Unfortunately, his big novels, which have unlimited room for intricacy, tend to bloat with repetition and bog down under lengthy delays.
I believe that if Donaldson would write all his stories in the 50-page range, he would be an even larger figure than he already is in the world of the sci-fi/fantasy novel.
a brilliant collection of short stories.......2000-10-08
I got this book as soon as saw it because having read and loved t'The chronicles of Thomas Covenant', I wanted to see what this was about. I found that the story'Daughter of regals' dragged on a bit but made it up at the end. In fact, all these stories are unique in their own way and all have slight twists. I loved 'Animal lover' and 'Mythalogical beast'- this was prehaps the shortest of all the stories. However, I wasn't that impressed with 'gilden fire'-it does help to have read the Thomas Covenant series before you read this.
But all in all, I would recomend this to anyone who enjoys all Stephen Donaldson's books. He is a marvel.

Book Description
With little skill, surprisingly few ingredients, and even the most unsophisticated of ice-cream makers, you can make the scrumptious ice creams that have made Ben & Jerry's an American legend.
BEN & JERRY'S HOMEMADE ICE CREAM & DESSERT BOOK tells fans the story behind the company and the two men who built it-from their first meeting in 7th-grade gym class (they were already the two widest kids on the field) to their "graduation" from a $5.00 ice-cream-making correspondence course to their first ice-cream shop in a renovated gas station.
But the best part comes next. Dastardly Mash, featuring nuts, raisins, and hunks of chocolate. The celebrated Heath Bar Crunch. New York Super Fudge Chunk. Oreo Mint. In addition to Ben & Jerry's 11 greatest hits, here are recipes for ice creams made with fresh fruit, with chocolate, with candies and cookies, and recipes for sorbets, sundaes, and baked goods. The 90-plus authentic recipes are spiced with Lyn Severance's bright, quirky, full-color illustrations. Over 383,000 copies in print.

All and all, not a bad book.......2007-10-01
The first time I tried a recipe out of this book, it was way too icy. The next time, I took the time to read the intro and all the technical information and the next batch of ice cream was way better. They tell you ways to make your ice cream more or less rich. I have only tried about 4 of the recipes but first time was the only time I was disappointed.
Love this book!.......2007-09-07
I love ice cream and I love this book. I have made three of the recipes so far and will try the fourth today. All have been scrumptious!
Ben & Jerry's Ice CReam book.......2007-08-20

While I'm not the best cook in the world, even these recipes have turned out well for me. I love this book and now I'm hooked on trying out new flavours. They are easy to follow and definately great tasting and creamy. I love the Oreo Mint especially. When Summer rolls around here, I can't wait to try the sorbets. This is definately one of the best dessert books I've bought and you don't ever need to get bored with options when there is more than 90 recipes to try. Go get this and have fun in the kitchen. It's great.

Good experiments.......2007-01-03
If you like mustards this is an easy to follow book. We have enjoyed eating our own creation.....some are warmer than others so beware if sharing with small children.
No Basic Mustard.......2006-11-05
This book was not what I was looking for. I wanted some basic mustard recipes, but this book only had one or two, then used those recipes as the basis for others (i.e. you make dijon mustard, then use a cup of that to make another mustard). No truly basic mustards were included. I've not used a single recipe out of this book.
Showcasing the versatility and diversity of mustards.......2003-01-05
Collaboratively written by mustard experts Helen Sawyer and Cheryl Long, Gourmet Mustards: The How-Tos Of Making & Cooking With Mustards features more than 125 recipes showcasing the versatility and diversity of mustards. Whether making a mustard or utilizing it in one of the delicious, health-friendly recipes, the preparatory instructions are clear, concise, and "kitchen friendly". From classic standards like Honey-Lemon Glazed Chicken; Curry Mustard Fish Fillets; and Champagne Mustard; to newer culinary creations like Creole Remoulade Sauce; Herbed Mustard Butter; and Dill Mustard Seafood Sauce; Gourmet Mustards truly lives up to its name and is an enthusiastically recommended addition to speciality and gourmet cookbook collections. Also very strongly recommended is a companion cookbook from Sibyl Productions, Marsha Peters Johnson's newly revised and expanded Gourmet Vinegars: The How-Tos Of Making & Cooking With Vinegars (1889531057, ...).

Customer Reviews:
This is a delightful book probably perfect for middle school.......2007-03-28
Or, what the heck, high school, adults or elementary school. On the back it says it is for, ..."coloring book enthusiasts...". The front and back covers are what the drawing could look like if drawn by someone with excellent artistic skill. The rest of us, regardless of age, would have a harder time doing that. It doesn't mean we wouldn't enjoy ourselves. I think a lot depends on what one used to color the drawings. I've always liked this book. I think it's a perfect companion piece to a collection of large, big color photo FLW books. The paragraph of info accompanying each drawing reads like it's suited for middle or high school readers. The coloring enthusiast in your life would probably really like this, particularly if they're into great buildings. Seeing the 43 pages of drawings, all exterior perspectives that include landscaping, gives a different presentation to his buildings than strictly photographs. These drawings are not to be confused with FLW's numerous architectural drawings. These were clearly drawn for this coloring book and a fine one it is. chrisbct@hotmail.com
Not just for kids!.......2002-10-30
I love Franl Lloyd Wright's work and I love coloring so I was thrilled to discover that Dover Publications had a book out about several of his creations. The drawings are simple black and white that you could color if you wished but I think the book is beautiful on its own and I'm not sure my coloring skills could do Wright's designs justice. The projects include both private homes and public buidlings. Each image is accompanied by a brief description that includes where, when, and for whom it was created. Several quotations from Wright himself are scattered throughout the book. I do wish the book had an index or a table of contents however. As for a coloring book, well, that's why I took off one star -- it seems disrespectful to color in this lovely architectual works.

Lively text and captions help to capture the designers, trends, and world events relevant to each piece, and the broader evolution of the genre, from a 1948 mural of rural America, replete with plump livestock and ripening fields, to the boldly colored abstractions produced in the 1950s by Herman Miller for MOMA. A useful resource for collectors, designers, decorators, and artists, Off the Wall is a colorful and captivating tribute to a widely appreciated medium.

wall papers design.......2007-05-09
this book is very useful for all kinds of designers. wall papers are very modern today as well as they were in the past.
today we use wall papers every where in every possibale space even in fashion stores, coffe shops and not only at houses.
this book gives us a review on the 20th century and which we can find very modern again today.
Not so wonderful.......2006-03-10
I dont think this book of wall paper pictures collection reflects the beauty, width and depth of the wallpaper design in 20th century. I have seen (and used) much better, detailed, artistic and representative examples myself.
All of the examples are from the 1920-60 period. Nothing after 1960. The book doesnt include any of the glamorous examples either. Another negative thing is all of the examples look like they are printed patterns, they give no idea about the texture, embossing and the paper type used.
If you are into the history of wallpapers this book may give you information but not much inspiring for graphic designers.
I wouldnt have bought it if i had the chance to see more pages because what you see at the Amazon.com "seach inside" feature is all this book about, same style, same not so good examples all through the book.

Product Description
Wallpaper is ubiquitous in domestic settings, but it has rarely been given the kind of attention bestowed on fine-art objects or other applied arts. Recently, a number of artists have discovered the potential of wallpaper as a medium for both its esthetic and political overtones. This publication documents two related exhibitions mounted at the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design (Providence), and The Fabric Workshop and Museum (Philadelphia)in 2003. The images and essays explore the current, vibrant wallpaper art scene, and provide an overview of the ups and downs of wallpaper's history as an art form. Thirty-nine contemporary artists are represented as well as relevant historical material. Essays by Judith Tannenbaum and Charles F. Stuckey. Introduction by Marion Boulton Stroud.

Book Description
This enduring biography of the popular writer begins with Ferber's last years in New York City, exploring the setting in which she did all of her great writing. Diaries, copious correspondence, and the cooperation of distinguished living friends have resulted in a rich portrait of a period and a literary circle not yet fully documented, and an insightful engaging analysis of a woman writer highly influential in the shaping of twentieth century America.

Fascinating Ferber.......2005-01-27
Biography written by a family member or friend so often is mere hagiography, not good biography. But the book by Julie Gilbert, Edna Ferber's great-niece, was the only Ferber biography I could find, so I decided I would start there to learn about Ferber, and I'm really glad I did. Is the Gilbert book objective? Of course not. No one writes objective biography.
I applaud Gilbert for her courage in presenting Ferber as a real person, exposing the extremes of her personality. Ferber was outsized-she had a benevolent heart coupled with colossal rage: "When Ferber got worked up over an issue, there was nobody who could touch her. She was a dervish of indignation. When she was calm she exuded power; when she was upset she exuded great power." Katherine Hepburn, twenty years Ferber's junior, says: "We were dangerous women. There aren't any more of us around."
I give the book only four stars for two reasons: One, because I wish Gilbert had included photos. I love the image that Gilbert writes of Ferber and her sister Fan looking together like a Diane Arbus photo: "visually similar and visually sour." A picture of these two together would have added a lot to the book; and two, because Gilbert doesn't include sources. Perhaps most of Ferber's papers are still in the family's control; regardless, I would like to have known where Gilbert found her information.
That being said, I would recommend this book for anyone interested in Edna Ferber, and also in New York, theater, and party life of the 1930s. Whee, Ferb! Wot a girl!
Ferber & American Literature.......2002-11-05
Is there a renaissance of interest in the writings of Edna Ferber? Stamps were minted honoring her this past summer [2002], and now the reissuance of this biography, written by Ferber's greatniece and originally published about 1978. I hope this indicates a resurgence of interest in her writings -- but you would be better served to read Ferber's writings themselves, than this biography.
I've been in love with the writings of Edna Ferber since I was 12 and someone gave me a used edition of "Amreican Beauty". I realize that she won't go down in the annals of the classics of American literature, such as Faulkner or even Carson McCullers: her writing lacks the quality of universality, and I suppose, self-discovery [on the reader's part]. But she is great at the sociology of America, at giving the reader an intuitive feel or understanding of an era or people. I even did my first term paper in high school on her: "The Effects of Minority Races on the Writing of Edna Ferber" -- and I still remember with pleasure the note the instructor wrote, to the effect that my love for Ferber's writings was apparent.
So although I had read reviews to the effect that Ms. Gilbert did not let her closeness to her aunt affect her objectivity, I couldn't resist reading it. I was prepared for her to be critical. I was not prepared for her to be vindictive and viperish. She related Ferber's life backwards: 1960 to 1968, 1952 to 1960, 1938 to 1950, 1916 to 1938, etc. -- so you begin by seeing her as a crochety old lady [and indeed, this was the bulk of the book, rather than the period in which Ferber was writing -- although I suppose it is understandable, as that is when Ms. Gilbert would have known her] without having any idea what made her that way.
What did come out was that Miss Ferber took over of the support of her extended family [besides her mother: her sister, her sister's 2 children, and their children] -- and that the family felt some guilt at this, and I felt Ms. Gilbert's book was an attempt to whitewash the family's guilt, saying in effect, "See, it wasn't easy for us, we had to put up with this disagreeable old lady." When she sticks to facts, it isn't too bad; but she's always jumping to pseudo-freudian conclusions, or attaching a moralistic interpretation to the actions of others. For example, although she quotes letters of praise from Noel Coward [who was not a person to suffer fools gladly] fairly frequently, she usually adds that the work "wasn't Ferber's best" [I wonder what she did feel was her best?] and that he undoubtedly did it out of friendship. She makes numerous allusions to a freudian problem which Miss Ferber had in her relationship with her mother, but during her tale of the early part of Ferber's life, never mentions anything to provide support or justification for such comments. If someone outside the family had written it, I'm sure they would be subject to a lawsuit for libel and inneundo.
The biography is entitled "Ferber and her Circle", but is only tangentially about her "circle".
