Book Description
Verdi and Rowe have been living a comfortable existence for the past twenty years. She was the pampered daughter of a prosperous rural preacher when she came to Philadelphia in the seventies -- and he was a conservative professor at the university she was attending, the man who rescued Verdi from an ugly addiction, and left his sophisticated wife for her when he fell in love with the confused young southern girl. It was another student, a poor and militant city boy named Johnson, who awakened Verdi's passionate heart and taught her to love heroin. But Johnson was an obsession Verdi closed her eyes to but never got over, and now he has come back into her life -- rekindling with one look the fire that still smolders in the ashes of the past, sending them both skidding dangerously and uncontrollably toward the mad desires of their youth.
Customer Reviews:
Great Read.......2007-05-08
I have read close to a million books...this one has made my top 10 all time favorites.
I could not put it down.
Blue and Sad Narrative.......2006-07-05
This book had very depressing undertones. Even when the characters are supposed to be happy, they feel sad. I don't get it?
The characters personalities were not fleshed-out enough. Certain characters I could never really understand who they were, and how they fit into the overall scheme of the story.
There are too many holes in this book. Since the author jumped from the 70's to the 90's she should have done a better job of filling in the gaps.
Someone gave me this book, and I am very glad. I would have been very upset if I had actually shelled out money for this story.
I do not recommend this dull and boring book to anyone. And, I will never read another story by Diane McKinney-Whetstone. An author gets only "1" chance to impress me. First impressions, are the lasting impressions. And, this particular author has left a bad impression on me with her ambiguous story that does not lead to a sensible ending.
i felt like i was dancing.......2005-03-29
you have to be at another level to apreciate this authors writing style..she reminds me of a young toni morrison or a alice walker her writing is so unique and very descriptive that it jakes makes u put the book down and think about what u just read....this is a excellent book from another excellent author.
Part II, please!.......2004-05-20
Ms. Dianne has yet to disappoint me with her lovable characters. After reading "Tumbling," I just had to rush back to the bookstore and purchase this one and, again, I am left smiling and feeling all high and tipsy after getting to know these characters.
Truly a great love story!
Broavo.......2004-05-04
I didn't really like it at first. But later on it makes you realize how important the judgments you make can change your life perpetually. I also like the fact that the book dealt with instant probability.
I was pleased to observe that everything worked out at the end for Verdi and Johnson. I did not feel sorry for Rowe at all. He sooner or later had to deal with the choice of leaving his wife for a younger woman. All in all I liked it in the end only later I realized that the book was indeed a good one.
Product Description
From chapter one: "Death is not a pleasant topic, nor one that we will dwell upon, but it is an important starting point for serious reflection. Moses wrote, 'So teach us to number our days [that is, to realize how quickly they come to an end], that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom' (Psalm 90:12). The implication is clear that something lies beyond the grave for which we ought to make plans. The uncertainty of life and the inevitability of death are two of the most basic elements of human existence. Logically, then--even for those who think death ends it all--what may lie after death deserves at least some serious attention and planning before it may be forever too late." Previously published in paperback, this new hardcover edition, provides in-depth, scriptural answers to many of life's most important questions.

One of Dave's best books.......2007-04-15
As a mature Christian, I personally have found this book to be a wonderful reminder of our faith. It also deals with many issues that are creeping into the Body of Christ. If you are serious and are in love with our Lord, then read this book.
Customer Reviews:
Great reading for an unbeliever, a new believer, or a vetran of the faith.......2006-11-21
This book is excellent, in case you can't tell from my 5 star rating or my title. I believe every Christian should read this book, and then pass it on. Better yet, keep your copy for a reference, and buy another to pass on.
This book is divided into five sections. The first section is just as good as C. S. Lewis' classic "Mere Christianity", talking about faith from a philosophical point of view, proving the reality of the Spiritual on the level of a non-religious person. This section continues on with prayer, and concludes as pointing out how reliable the Bible is for the source of truth.
The remainder of the book helps one grow deeper in his/her Christian life. It does deal with controversial topics. One major topic is pointing out the danger of the self-love movement. The fourth section deals with issues like the incarnation, the church, and eternal security. The final section focuses on the hope of heaven, based on a pre-millennial, pre-tribulational rapture viewpoint.
As stated, some of these topics are controversial. However, Hunt uses the Bible as the source of his teachings. His approach is that the Bible is understandable, and that faith is not contrary to reason but that true faith moves in the direction reason points, and then takes the next step.
This book is good to introduce an unbeliever to Christianity. It also is good for a new believer to ground them in the faith. Of course, more mature believers need to be reminded of the basics, because it is easy to be influenced by ideas that are rooted in the world, and not in Christianity/Scripture.
A Spiritually Well-Grounded Book for Every Believer!.......2000-06-20
Christians, if you want to grow spiritually by faith and not by some kind of positive mental attitude, then this book is for you. It will also help you understand why there is a mass delusion that is sweeping in many so-called evangelical churches.Dave Hunt makes it loud and clear that faith is not a leap in the dark. There is a convincing and rational defense for the gospel, and only the Christian can hope for tomorrow. It is indeed an Urgent Call to a Serious Faith.
Customer Reviews:
Not as good as I'd hoped.......2005-10-17
"Call to the Hunt" is a short story collection by the same author who wrote "Murdered by Human Wolves" (a saddle-stitched novella that was a runaway hit last year.)
I was especially happy to get it, as I enjoyed "Murdered by Human Wolves". I have to confess that I was a bit disappointed.
The cover art is outstanding - great colors, great imagery. Binding seems tight, edges are well-trimmed, but - and this is a big one - the type is so dotty that it looks like it was printed on a dot-matrix printer. It seriously impacted my enjoyment of the book.
I don't know if Scrybe Press is doing their own printing in-house, or if they're contracting it out, but they need to see to the quality of the type.
Sadly, this book is not so much a collection of short stories as it is a series of vignettes, some longer than others. Only one has any sort of internal resolution, and at least one is completely nonsensical, while another is an apparent excuse to write a sex scene.
Story issues aside, Wedel's writing is pleasant and well-crafted, but those who aren't familiar with his other work may find themselves at a loss due to the disconnected narratives.
Intriguing .......2005-07-11
This captivating collection of stories leaves the reader well satisfied. Wedel deftly weaves recognizable events in American history into the werewolf mythology he has created. This touch adds a hint of familiarity to the drama and leaves us wondering what role the wolf played in our past.
Two of Wedel's new stories, Journey to a New World and Of Witches and Werewolves, give us a compelling look at human nature and hypocrisy. The steamy Kiss of the Wolf will certainly make us think twice before slipping away from a party with a stranger.
My only complaint is that there were not more stories - I could read Wedel's work all day and never tire of it.
howling time with these fun werewolf thrillers .......2005-06-29
Fans of werewolf thrillers will want to howl with this strong twelve story compilation. Most of the tales are set in the eighteenth century, which Steven E. Wedel uses to deftly portray an eerie environs in spite of commonly known American historical events like an escaped slave, life on the frontier with the Sioux, or the battle of Saratoga. Seven of the contributions star Josef Ulrik, an interesting lycanthrope who steals the show even when the competition is the queen of howling Shara Wellington. For the most part the tales are serious with Sunday Dentistry more a tongue in cheek tale. Readers will feast on this fabulous journey into the world wild werewolves and latent lycanthropic who prove to the enthralled audience that Mr. Wedel knows his subject while also wondering if this author takes the full moon off.

Clear call to worship.......2001-05-06
Hello God! A Daily Call to Faith and Worship. In this outstanding, well-written book Lamar Hunt sounds a clear and certain, and deeply spiritual call to daily worship. Hello God is garnished with anecdotes drawn from a lifetime of living and serving that will greatly enrich the worshipper. This great book reflects the author's down-to-earth simplicity and clarity or writing, reinforced by long experience as a pastor and Army chaplain during peacetime and war.
Lamar Hunt's work clearly reflects his faith, work ethic and love for God and God's children, whom he serves, as I knew him and observed him under combat conditions and since.
Hello God is a liturgical, work of art that should be on the desk of every pastor who faces the continuous challenge of sermon preparation, and on the nightstand of every soul in the pastor's flock that seeks a daily, guided walk with the Lord.

Hello God.......2001-05-03
Hello God is such a delightful daily devotional. It is impossible for me to read just one a day. I am always several weeks ahead in my reading. I find myself reading parts of the book to my husband.
The ideas for each devotional are so practical for the lives of Christians. Yet non-Christians will also find wonderful meaning in the daily commentaries.
Hello God is my Daily Friend.......2001-04-27
I am amazed at the consistently great writing in Lamar Hunt's daily devotional book, Hello God! I don't read much except what I find on the computer screen, so it is a real tribute to say that I look forward to my daily devotional with Lamar. I bought the book because Lamar is a friend. I continue to read daily because his work is great! If I could write as well as Lamar does, this would be an excellent review. In fact, I enjoy Hello God so much that I have purchased a dozen copies and have given them to friends. My wife and I each have a copy. She is an avid reader and really enjoys Hello God! I find each devotional different, but all have been of high quality. Some make me think. Some warm my heart. Some challenge me to become better. Some lead me to God. But they all capture my attention and bless me. I a going upstairs right now and read my daily devotional from Hello God!
He Tells It Like It Is.......2001-04-24
If you want a spiritual thought stimulator daily, this book is for you.
I've know Lamar long and well enough to recognize many of the events he's described in this book to place a real life meaning to things we sometimes find difficult to associate with spiritually.
He's packed a lot of wallop into each page telling it like he sees it!
For those who might be thinking I'm saying all these good things because Lamar and I are friends just don't know what kind of friendship is and has been. We "shoot each down" just as quick as we compliment, sometimes quicker, we just do that between us and not in a public forum.
Buying this book will be one of the best things you ever did. But, remember if you don't read it you'll miss a lot!
Sincerely,
>don

An Invaluable Resource.......2003-04-30
Nancy Lawson has written a wonderful book dealing with a subject that everyone will have to confront eventually. Why not be prepared? She is a very personable writer who tells about her own experiences in a friendly, cheerful way. She includes information pertinent to different religions. She tells you the right questions to ask. Her advice ranges from simple: "What to say if someone has died", to complex: "What are the legal aspects of wills, probate, and trusts". The workbook layout makes the book very easy to read. I highly recommend it for everyone's bookshelf.

Very good book.......2007-05-13
I really apreciate this book, Afrocentricity view depicts in this book is a philosophy that can help every african descendant to learn more about his identity, and to improve their perception of the world.
Last level Philosophy.......2006-07-11
The only problem with Dr. Asante's books is that they end. You kinda wish he would write a new chapter every month and just add it on. His observations and analysis of the African experience the world over is arguably the most poignant today. I bet 100 or 200 years from now his work will still hold up.

Applehood and Motherpie.......2007-03-08
I have successfully used recipes from this wonderful book ever since its publication. Upstate New Yorkers know how to cook!
Trust me: Buy this cookbook.......2005-10-16
This cookbook is fool proof and red hot. Buy multiple copies and give it to your friends. I am a Southern food aficianado, but I enthusiastically admit that those western NY Yankees sure can cook.
The best cookbook ..........2002-08-16
My mother has been using this cookbook since it was published in the early '80s. The recipes go from quick and easy family pleasers to elegant evening fair. Some of the recipes are still weekly meals in not only my mom's house, but my own too!! We were so excited to find it here! Now it's not only graces my mother and my cookbook libraries, but we also give it as shower and wedding presents! Everyone should own this cookbook! It is the best ever!
Beautiful, delicious recipes.......2000-12-05
I have brought many of these dishes, salads etc. to parties & showers. People are always are asking for the recipes and complimenting these delicious and different recipes. One of my favorites is for a fast, easy salad of romaine lettuce, strawberries, onions with a wonderful poppyseed dressing.
Easy & dazzling recipes to dazzle your guests everytime!.......1998-11-11
Applehhood and Motherpie is my favorite cookbook. Every recipe that I have made has become a family favorite. Everytime I have guests over, and I serve a dish from this book, I am asked for the recipe. Applehood and Motherpie offers quick and easy meals for the worn out mother or working woman. It also offers elegant and dazzling meals that are easy to follow for the more special events.

Blue Book of Airguns a must have.......2006-07-19
The Blue Book of Airguns is a must have for any airgun collector. It has great history of airguns that are very uncommon in the US. I dont always agree with the estimated values but the background, history and pictures of the airguns are great.

Expectations vs Reality.......2006-03-09
I originally thought that the book was MORE on airgun operation, types, problems, etc. Of course it it a history of many airguns and their parent companies; to that end, it was very readable.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Instructional Book... but the patterns give knitting a bad reputation........2006-12-28
I just got this book a few weeks ago. The advice it gives is great. I finally learned how to knit English style using this book (after years of knitting using the combined method) and it helped me learn how to decipher knitting charts and how to increase and decrease effectively. The diagrams are helpful and the author's tone is not condescending (like in so many knitting books). I also love how it's spiral bound which makes placing it in my lap while i knit on the couch so much easier!
BUT... it has a down side. The patterns are so vile and disgusting that when I first saw them, I almost put the book back on the shelf. Heck! I even gagged!!!! The patterns include a sweater that's emblazoned with a large fair isle knight on horseback amongst other even more ugly items (like those tacky fair isle/norweigan style deer sweaters!)
I'll never EVER use the patterns in this book as they're so ugly that even my grandmother would have never even worn them... or even considered making. It's patterns like this that make knitting look bad! Knitters are fashionable and I wish that instructional book authors would realize this! (For fashionable patterns check out the Stitch'n Bitch series by Debbie Stoller... her books are popular for that reason)
Despite the horrible patterns, this book offers something I haven't seen in any other instructional book: a large listing of cable and lace patterns (well, charts), as well as a large listing of knitted stitches. This book is worth buying just for that.
So I definitely recommend this book as an instructional guide... just rip out and burn the patterns as they're so ugly they're not worth taking the time to make

Like most Alessi designs - simple and functional.......2002-04-06
A light, compact tome that provides a decent cursory overview of the aesthetic arc of this legendary Italian design house. Book itself is nicely laid out, illustrated and printed on excellent stock. A great start point for newcomers to the field in learning more about key designers and products launched and fielded by Alessi. On the downside though, this book lacks depth and could've used better 'copy' to provide for a more interesting read.
a good summary of Alessi.......2000-01-04
Whilst this book is by no mean concise, it does give the readers a general overview of Alessi, its maestros, its philosophy & so forth. It's such an enjoyable & simple book to read. If the readers want to have an in-depth knowledge of Alessi's product lines, & so forth, perhaps, Alessi: The Design Factor is a better option.

Book Description
How My Death Saved My Life is the remarkable story of author Denise Linn. In this triumphant autobiography, Denise speaks with a compassionate yet fiery conviction, born of deep pain, as she describes overcoming the horror of an abusive childhood and the terror of being stricken down by an unknown gunman. From the mundane to the mystical, follow Denise's inner and outer journeys as she grows up in various homes from abandoned army barracks, to the slums of Chicago, to an Ohio farming community.
Travel with her as she is fired on by a plane in Yugoslavia, is tear gassed during antiwar riots, explores the sexual revolution in the '60s, lives in a Buddhist monastery, and travels to native cultures to become one of the world's most sought-after speakers and a best-selling author. Thousands of people worldwide have attended her lectures . . . and now, for the first time, they can read the story behind this internationally renowned woman.
Customer Reviews:
Riveting!!.......2007-09-18
I had heard Denise Linn on the radio so when I needed to 'spned a little more to get free shipping' I got this book. What an amazong person! I can't put the book down. And I can't wait to read another of hers!
A Beautiful, Inspirational Autobiography.......2006-04-08
I just finished reading "How My Death Saved My Life", and I am truly moved & amazed by this authors' life experiences - what a journey!!!
In this autobriography, Denise Linn bares her soul - she shares the joys, horrors & hardships of growing up poor with a mother who was mentally ill, and a father who left them when she was still quite young (and who molested her during a time period when her mother was in a mental institution).
Then, at age 17, Denise was shot and nearly died. It was during this time that she experienced an NDE, and began noticing a heightening of her "sixth senses" - leading her to start learning about alternative healing, which she then used to heal many, many people along the way.
It's amazing how, when reading someone elses life story, you can see the synchronicities of life - how each experience (whether we perceive it as good or bad) allows you to learn what you need in order to progress to the "next step". In fact, she states toward the end of the book that she began to realize that it was her difficult childhood that led her to explore the things she did - without it, she would have been a different person...
This book is filled with wonderful angelic & "other worldly" experiences that served to help the author move forward, and find the right path for her. I found each & every one of the experiences to be both amazing & inspiring.
Overall, I learned a lot from the life experiences & learning lessons of this author. This book is an interesting, page-turning read, and I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in spirituality - it has a lot to offer.
The best so far and she's just begun. .......2006-01-24
Courage and I suppose curiosity and a sense of adventure characterize this amazing woman. What is so breathtakingly beautiful about Denise is her down to earth nature and compassion- her search for meaning and her quest to share her knowledge. One would be very hard pressed to find another person who has such a magnificent heart and extensive "curriculum vitae"I honor her- even if I cannot put my finger on exactly what makes her brand of honesty so unique. A death bed admission from a wise man that Denise tells of may have put it best when he said that the key was to "keep it simple".I was rapt from beginning to end and gobbled up the book in an afternoon, it was real, it was good , it was real good
A Personal Journey from Pain to Wholeness.......2005-03-31
HOW MY DEATH SAVED MY LIFE By Denise Linn is an autobiography of her Journey to Wholeness. If you are familiar with Linn's other books, you'll enjoy this one which tells of her tragic childhood, her near death experience after being shot, and her triumph in overcoming huge obstacles both physical and psychological. She explains how she gained her spiritual insights and learned to use her natural talents as a Seer by studying with various healers and Seers around the world while connecting to her Cherokee ancestry and its beliefs. Her life and her work are most unusual and interesting to read. The book is very encouraging to anyone who has had a tragic childhood to overcome. Cl
And Archetypal journey of Healing, Compassion and Joy.......2005-02-16
The moment I started reading this book, I simply could not stop: it is very well written, and takes you on a journey that is rich and powerful, while being fully and deeply lived.
Denise Linn shares the intense trials of growing up with a mother that becomes increasingly mentally ill, raising her kids in a home where there is no sense of nurturing, safety and care. Experiencing all kinds of physical and emotional abuse, she finds nature to be the only place where she can feel connected with a sense of peace, comfort and healing.
As she moves through her amazing journey, guided by a powerful creative desire to heal herself and help others, she is often touched by grace, as she follows her inner guidance and finds ways to transform suffering and deep trials into Compassion and Radiant Joy.
When the heart and the willingness to transform, are the central guides of a life journey, a human being can become the best of what she or he can be. Thank you, Denise Linn, for offering us such a powerful archetypal example of a journey that we all can take.
