Book Description
An extraordinary adventure, set against a forgotten event of the Renaissance: the French colonization of Brazil.
Brazil Red tells the story of two orphaned children, Just and Colombe, who are dragged off on the French colonizing expeditionthey are meant to learn the native languages and act as interpreters. Everything in this novel is outsized: the setting, a jungle still populated by cannibals; the characters, including Villegagnon, the expedition's eccentric leader, who might be a model for Cyrano or d'Artagnan; and the events, a dress rehearsal for the Wars of Religion ten years in the future.
Packed with portraits, landscapes, and action, Brazil Red is a novel about coming of age and discovering love. On a deeper level, the story follows the destinies and decisions of Just and Colombe, presenting two conflicting views of man and nature. On one hand, a conquering European civilization, offering liberation but delivering death. On the other, the Indian world, with its sensuality, its harmony, its sense of the sacred, its continual call to happiness.

A terrifically comprehensive history of the impact of European settlement on the native population of Brazil. Hemming has introduced a style and content that makes this as much a story book as a formal text book. The brutal and tragic consequences of the meeting of two extremely diverse cultures are brought to life in this book, with the greed and self-righteousness of the Portugese settlers set against the innocence and primitive nature of the indigenous 'Indians'. Anybody with an interest in the history of Brazil would find this a truly fascinating read.

The book on Brazil, Uruguay and the natives.......2004-03-16
This book is simply the best and one of the only books on the Indians of Brazil and Uruguay and the conquest of them. This is an amazing wide ranging study from the missionaries to the slave trade to the many indian nations in Brazil.
Rivers of Blood.......2004-01-19
The story of how the Portuguese came to rule Brazil takes us to the "Pope Line" of Alexander VI, which split South America into two pieces. Most of it fell within the Spanish hemisphere, but, as fate would have it, the eastern slab (roughly, where Brazil is) went to Portugal. Given the absence of mineral deposits, the colonists resorted to exploiting human population. The tale of Brazil's conquest is a grim story of progressive accretion, acre by acre, tribe by tribe, with only the Jesuits serving to moderate the excesses of the colonists. Needless to say, the Jesuits were soon eliminated as a threat (this is depicted in the Morricone film "The Mission") and the Brazilian interior given over to plunder. Hemmings also takes us through the Dutch and French interludes, wherein Portugal stood to lose its dominions to these interlopers. There are few heroes on the European side in this epic, however there are a number of brave tribesmen who succeeded, always temporarily, in holding back the advance.

Description:
Coastal marine environments, especially semienclosed systems such as bays, are under unrelenting stress caused by urban and industrial development. Biomonitoring plays a vital role in strategies to identify, assess, and control stressors. However, due to the magnitude of the challenge there is a demand for new and innovative approaches to provide timely and accessible information to environmental managers and policy makers. The present work aimed to assess hydrocarbon levels in sediments from petroleum-related industrial areas at Todos os Santos Bay (Brazil) and associate them to toxicity-induced responses (neutral red retention (NRR) assay) by the burrowing clam Anomalocardia brasiliana. Surface sediments collected during the dry and rainy seasons were analyzed for aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons. At the control site, hydrocarbon levels were low and mainly biogenic. The aliphatic hydrocarbon (''total unresolved complex mixture,'' alkanes, and isoprenoids) concentrations indicated a chronic situation with very little ''fresh'' oil contamination at the oil-related sites. The polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons indicated sites moderately contaminated by chronic oil and some pyrolytic input. The effects of those contaminants were assessed by the lysosomal NRR assay applied to A. brasiliana hemocytes. Sediment toxicity at the oil-related sites was evidenced by the lowered capacity of the lysosomes to retain the neutral red dye compared to results from the control site. This research indicates that the NRR assay is a useful and efficient screening technique able to discriminate polluted from clean sites.

Book Description
A riotous new fantasy series that will challenge the funniest the field has to offer--from the creator of the bestselling Amber series and one of the genre's legendary humorists. Azzy Elbub, demon, has his sights set on the Millenial Evil Deeds Award, given to the being whose acts do the most toward reshaping the world. But his evil plans go far astray. . . .
Customer Reviews:
Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
A fantasy comedy. You have fairy tale spoofs, of course, here. A demon goes about trying to win an evilness competition. Hilarity ensues. Think Good Omens crossed with Xanth, or that sort of thing. The demon is not that bad a guy, it seems, when you see things from his point of view, and what he has to get up to just to get along, particularly putting up with incompetent humans, and others. Fairly funny.
Not Quite Charmed.......2006-04-20
Zelazny always had a little bit of fun with his stories of various supernatural beings, and Sheckley was known for writing with a bit of tongue in cheek, so this novel portraying the exploits of one demon, Azzie Elbub, should have been a hand's down snap for them.
Indeed, the book starts smartly, as Azzie, through the fortuitous happening of someone in Hell grabbing a soul too early, and the higher ups not wanting to deal with the resulting lawsuit (obviously, lawyers are much worse than demons), gets to escort the poor soul back to the world of the living. Once there, finding it is the year 1000, and time for the millennial contest between Heaven and Hell for who will hold sway on Earth for the next 1000 years, Azzie conceives of a great plan for winning the contest. He will re-create the fairy tale of Prince Charming and Sleeping Beauty, but with one small difference: the Prince will be so much of coward that his quest will fail miserably, proving that man's basest desires and emotions are not noble, but belong to the Dark Angel.
For much of the first half of the book, things cook along quite merrily, given Azzie's problems obtaining the necessary body parts, the infuriating blockages he runs into at the otherworldly supply depot (What? You only have one castle in stock? And it takes how long to set up an Enchanted Forest?), more problems preserving and assembling his body parts into appropriate wholes, etc. But once all these preliminaries are completed, a lot of the fun seems to go away, and the story seems to gallop off in too many different directions at once, with the appearance of a Heavenly Angel to oversee his project, Prince Charming not reacting well to instruction, kidnappings, witches, dragons, etc. The book staggers from one incident to the next, with little cohesiveness to the plot, and worse, an almost total disappearance of all the funny wry jokes.
The ending is almost anti-climactic, and quite a letdown from the expectations raised by the beginning of the book. Net result: still quite readable, but not anywhere near the class of his Jack of Shadows, and even falling shy of his A Night in Lonesome October.

A brilliant, very funny novel that fizzles toward the end.......2003-12-13
Bring Me the Head of Prince Charming starts out like gangbusters, starts to hit some slow patches midway through, and sort of just fizzles at the end, but it's still a very funny book by the writing duo of Roger Zelazny and Robert Sheckley. The main character is Azzie Elbub, a demon who finally gets the chance to get out of the pits and go back up to earth, thanks to the Grim Reaper's slightly premature harvesting of a certain soul; even the devil wants nothing to do with lawsuits, so he sends Azzie along to make sure the not-dead guy makes an easy transition back into life. Azzie's luck is even better than he initially thinks, as his return to earth just so happens to fall in the days leading up to the year 1000. Every millennium, the forces of Good and Evil stage a contest to determine who will control the universe for the next ten centuries. Azzie just so happens to have a great idea to pitch to the Millennial Evil Deeds committee. He will recreate the whole Sleeping Beauty-Prince Charming story, but this time evil will rise up and destroy any chance of a happily ever after ending. Having gotten his idea approved and received an unlimited credit card for the purchase of necessary supplies, he sets to work. He needs a good assistant, of course, and a couple of castles, and an Enchanted Forest which simply must have flaming trees and such, and of course he will need a fitting Prince Charming and Sleeping Beauty. Here is where the magic of his plan really shines, as he takes parts from different bodies and brings them together in an act of magical creation that guarantees, he thinks, the success of his nefarious plan. Thus, his Prince Charming has the legs of one of mankind's biggest cowards, Sleeping Beauty gets such nifty features as a left arm born for stealing, etc.
Of course, Azzie faces obstacles along the way. His otherworldly suppliers are less than cooperative with his requisition requests, he has to deal with an angel of good overseeing his whole operation (no cheating, even for Evil), and his initial plans for micro-managing the activities of Prince Charming in particular have to be rethought several times over. He does have an old witch flame at his side, and the god Hermes can always be counted upon to give good advice, but Azzie keeps falling into little traps set by little girls wanting wishes, dwarves who don't take kindly to having their precious gems forcibly loaned out, and other magical snares.
Unfortunately, the novel's cohesion threatens to come apart at the seams as the novel progresses. There is never a sense of discontinuity between both authors; rather, it is as if another author failed to deliver his part of the whole story. Transitions become much more rapid and forced, certain minor characters seem to be forgotten along the way, and the climax comes and goes so fast you might miss it. The idea behind the story is brilliant, and the authors clearly start out with the power and will to make it work, but something goes wrong along the way, making the second half of the novel feel forced and unsatisfying. Still, though, there is a lot of fun and laughs to be found in these pages, and the reader's thoughts about what could have been do not necessarily destroy the entertainment value of this farcical fantasy.
Harmless diversion.......2002-01-10
This novel is definitely worth reading, especially if a reader is looking for relaxation and fluff. The story is a cute, fast read. It promises more than it delivers, but I did not begrudge the authors as I certainly enjoyed the time spent. In actually reminds me of a "Myth" book that mythed its mark...good for rainy or sick days.
Fun story.......2001-11-12
I really enjoyed this unique twist on the popular fairy tale. It was funny, and well done. I actually loaned this book to someone who never returned it. Guess that speaks for how well it was written. Anyway, I enjoyed this book and will definately purchase it again but this time I am NOT loaning it out!

bavarian gate.......2000-05-09
There were some tecnical errors that bothered me in the extreme. First the German standard armoured half track did not have doors in the drivers compartment, entrance was through the troop compartment. The second error was that the standard German rifle and machinegun cartrage during WWII was 7.92mm not 7.62mm (modern NATO round) A little easy reserch would have fixed these mistakes. The story itself was rather pointless and not up to the standards of the other books written by this author. A real letdown, for i really enjoyed his other books.
A smart, well written book that continues a good series.......1998-12-24
I read the book in a day while I was sick and I couldn't put it down, the story was very well layed out and I got caught up in the characters story and thought that the way the story was described, that it almost could have happened due to the detail and research the Author put into the story and it had many good twists that gave the story extra flavor and some realism.
Pretty good. . ........1998-10-05
The Bavarian Gate is the sequel to The Lion of Farside. It's about Curtis Macurdy a farmer's son who has returned from his adventures in Yuulith to America in midst of The Depression. This is an entertaining, realistic (as in its descriptions, not the plot) and fun book to read. The characters are 3 dimensional, and fun to follow, especially Curtis. I hope there'll be another book in this series.

Customer Reviews:
My favorite slow cooker cook book.......2007-08-11
I love my slow cookers! I have three of them and have six slow cooker cook books. This one is definitely my favorite. I was a vegetarian for a long time and now that I am eating meat again I still go back to this book for my slow cooker recipes. The recipes often call for some minor sauteing prior to tossing everything in the slow cooker but this prep is quick and truly enhances the flavor of the dishes. This slow cooker book is not just a "toss in all of the processed foods and call it dinner" slow cooker cook book. This cookbook uses real ingredients for inventive, healthy, inexpensive, and savory dishes. A must-buy for a slow cooker and veggie lover! Delicious meals to come home to on those stressful days...everyone should use this book!
Don't waste your money.......2007-08-04
The thing that I love about slow cookers is, you throw everything into the pot, turn it on and at dinner time you have a meal. It's simple, easy and tastes GREAT. Unless you like to cook, then put it into the crockpot, i would not recomend this book. You might as well cook the whole meal, you are already doing half of the cooking anyhow. Also.....the recipes in here have a LOT of ingredients, not very practicle for my family. We can't afford to cook gourmet meals.
a must have cookbook!.......2007-07-25
This is a must have cookbook! I have made several of the recipes listed in her book and each is tasty. I'd like to thank Judith Finlayson for this wonderful book. She has made dinners quick, nutritious, and delicious!
Not worth it.......2007-05-03
This has delicious sounding recipes - however, EVERY ONE of them requires pre-cooking something before you can ever put in the cooker. My idea of a slow cooker recipe is one in which I can just dump stuff in and go. No, not with this book. What a complete waste of money, I don't have time to do all that's required to make these recipes!
Good Recipes, but tough ingredients.......2007-02-21
The recipes in this book are great, but there is usually one ingredient in every recipe that is tough to find at the grocery store, or seasonal. If you have a big healthfood store near you, it shouldn't be a problem.
Customer Reviews:
A classic.......2006-04-07
This book is considered a classic, and contains recipes not commonly found in other cookbooks. The authors do us MSG (common in commercial Chinese cooking), but I just leave it out. If you are a cookbook collector, or someone who has a fascination with Chinese culture and cooking, this is an interesting little reference book.
Customer Reviews:
For people collecting artist-signed postcards...........2000-04-15
If you are interested in collecting artist-signed, fantasy, and greetings-type postcards, as is the author of this book, you will find more than 350 pages of this book devoted to your hobby. If you are interested in collecting postcards showing town views, real photo, and roadside America -- a much more popular hobby, as shown by the major auction websites -- you will find only about 30 pages devoted to your hobby. There is an 8-page introduction useful for all collectors.
If you only pick one, pick this one..........2000-02-29
Between my mother and I, we've been collecting postcards for over 40 years (we also sell them on Ebay). Mashburn's excellent reference is the first book we recommend to people who ask us for a reference on postcard collecting. It is organized well, filled with important history and information, and has thousands of pictures and prices to guide the new and the seasoned collector. If you only buy one book about postcards, this is the one to buy.
Good reference book in this field but lacks proper editing.......1999-11-10
I use this book frequently and, by adding my own "tabs" and my own cross reference table, have made it much easier to use. There are many important names in the work itself that are not shown in the index. As a result I am now working on compiling my own index to this book.
. . . packed full of postcard information!.......1998-02-07
This is a wonderful reference source and price guide for postcard collectors. It is packed full of postcard information compiled from experienced dealers and collectors.
As a beginning postcard collector, you will need to fully study this guide and understand the way the material is categorized before you use it at any PC Collector Shows & Auctions. It is not always user friendly ~ it may require a considerably amount time of hunting through several of the book's categories before you find your information. Same goes for matching the photos displayed on the book's page and finding it's related information in the text!
Keep your previous J. L. Mashburn Postcard Price Guides. This Third Edition of THE POSTCARD PRICE GUIDE contains all new photos and does not repeat the photos from the previous additions.
I recommend that you purchase J. L. Mashburn's Third Edition of THE POSTCARD PRICE GUIDE. It is worth the investment!
Catalog Reading Made Interesting.......1997-10-20
As a brand-new postcard collector, I needed a reference book which is complete and interesting. Mashburn's catalog of collectible postcards is as fun as reading an old Sears catalog and as informative as an encyclopedia. The author should have offered better clarification of certain postcard types, such as "linens" (what do they feel like?) and "real photos" (are they originals without any reproductions?). Mashburn should have kept the definitions more explicit and basic for beginners, but this is a trap into which all experts fall. Overall, this is a great intro to collecting postcards. Anyone have a postmarked Titanic card which they'll sell to me for cheap?

Customer Reviews:
Instructions left me confused.......2007-02-04
When I flipped through this book at the store, it looked great. The pictures were big and colorful and I thought it would help me see what to do. Once I tried to use it, I found that the pictures in the early part of the book were useless. First, she made "casting on" incredibly confusing, but when someone showed me in real life, it was very simple. Why she does it the way she does is beyond me. It's like teaching a beginner the most complicated way to do something. When showing how to do knit and purl stitches, I felt that the photos didn't really show where you were supposed to be wrapping the yarn or pulling it through. The descriptions were vague and the photos no help. I looked at the part about dropped stitches and it was useless. It basically says if you drop a stitch to use a crochet hook to catch the yarn and pull it through. Pull it through where? If you are brand new to this, you won't understand. I had to turn to two longtime knitters at work and a Web site with video to make up for what the book didn't show. I'm hoping that once I get better and can do patterns that this book will become useful. For now, it seems like a waste of money.
This is just what I needed!.......2005-12-04
I really like this book! I am a novice knitter, and I needed something that did more than just show me a diagram. The bright, colorful photographs are beautiful, and the instruction is very clear! The book is filled with lots of different stitches, and several really neat patterns! If you were to purchase each of the patterns individually, the total would be MORE than the cost of this book! I've had experienced knitters tell me that they are going to buy this book because it is all inclusive!
Instant Intermediate Knitter.......2005-05-19
As a knitting store employee and knitting teacher, I've been looking for an inexpensive starter's book that I could recommend to my students. This is it, sort of.
The Good:
I fully appreciate the historical section, especially the last 100 years.
Excellent photography. I think that one could actually learn to knit by themselves with this book. Most books show you diagrams, which most people agree are useless, unless someone has already walked you through the stitches in person.
Clear instrucions are included for most of the techniques, but many expert, even intermediate, techniques are missing.
The Repairable:
Three areas could use some clarification. I may have missed it, but it seems that the simple increase is the same as the fully finished increase. I prefer to increase by "making one," which is not explained. The other techniques missing are the "sling-shot" cast-on and some critical finishing techniques.
It is written for a reader/learner. Those who learn with different styles may miss some very important points which are buried in text. On the other hand, a reader might read straight through and love it.
The very best post-script would be: "A good starter book in a library of knitting literature."
Customer Reviews:
Covers the basics..........2005-09-26
I really like this book - granted, I wouldn't duplicate the exact styles in the book (it screams 1980s), but I know what styles I like, I just needed some guidance on how to make what I wanted to make. This book covers everything - window coverings, bed linens, etc. My only complaint is that sometimes the directions are SO simplified that it almost makes them confusing. But overall it was a great purchase. Also, I almost bought this book at a craft store close by, but ended up buying it on Amazon...with standard shipping it came two days later and was less expensive than the one at the craft store.
Excellent How-To Book.......2005-07-16
If you are interested in making your own home fabrics, this is a great resource. This book shows you step-by-step how to make no-sewing and simple sewing projects to personalize your home (and save money to boot!). This is not an interior decorating book; rather, it is a manual for people who want to spruce up their homes but need to know HOW. I didn't see any outdated information here - some of the styles were more "country" than others, but there is plenty here from other design styles to keep you busy. Also, you can tailor the majority of the ideas in this book to your tastes. All in all, a fantastic guide to sewing projects for the home.
Look at the design not the fabric!.......2002-10-21
When I got this book, I immediately noticed the value of the information offered. It has tons of details from fabric choices to what kind of tools to purchase. In the back it even offers "time saving" features which gives you ideas to use fabric in different ways from walls to glueing seams together to save time on sewing. The book places a lot of emphasis on certain things that beginners NEED to know. I am a beginner and have poured over tons of other books and nothing compares to this book in terms of teaching you how to do different techniques. Certainly, the fabric choices in this book are outdated, but use your imagination! You don't have to purchase the same fabric or color choices in this book. Purchase your own and use the outlines offered in this book. Even add your own. A great book to start with. Highly recommended!
Simplicity's Simply the Best Home Decorating Book.......2002-08-01
I think that this book is fantastic. It covers so many different home decorating projects, with very clear easy to follow instructions. It's a great addition to any home sewing reference library.
Not a good buy.......2002-02-27
I'm sorry I bought this book. Opening it was like walking back in time. I did not know how old it was until I had already bought the book. The how-to is OK but the decorating ideas (styles, colors) are old and dated.
