Wonderful collection of stories of pre-war Poland.......1998-12-28
Wonderfully written and translated collection of stories, for both adults and children. Written of a boy growing up in pre-war Poland, it gives a taste of the life of the time, and what it was like to be there, in an era that no longer exists. The stories are especially enjoyed by children, with characters that children can identify with. It is also a good introduction for children to life in the pre-Holocaust years. The book envelopes the reader in the warmth of the writers household, and you feel like you grew up there; you feel a personal rapport with the protagonist. I recommend this book to anyone interested in Jewish life in pre-war Europe, or those interested in furthering their children's background in Jewish life of the time. The classic stories for children in the second half of the book can be enjoyed by all.

Can't put it down.......2006-07-26
An amazing series that just consumes you. Try and put it down, I dare you! :)
A follow-up on her first (and Excellent!) Fantasy Novel, 'Destiny Denied', this adventure moves into the realm of Sci-Fi, with the nonviolent practioners of the 'mind sense' locked in an ideological struggle with a decaying and morally bankrupt galactic empire.
A must read!
Gripping Adventure.......2006-07-12
A thrilling adventure, mixed with conspiracies, intrigue, and romance; her trilogy unfolds a noble battle against unbeatable evil. I couldn't put them down! I read all 3 books in about 2 days... The story is clever and flows smoothly, the characters are complex and vivacious, and the author's message is beautiful and simple. Truly a tale that can apply to our world today. What an artist! I want more! :)
Very impressive - I enjoyed tremendously!.......2006-03-30
Have read tons of fantasy and science fiction (Hobbs, Le Guin, Tolkien, Eddings, etc...) and these books are some of the best out there. A great blend of action entertainment and philosophical reverie. Loved the diverse characters. The ending leaves you wanting more. Looks like a new author - hope there is more coming! Z.M.
This rocks!.......2006-03-15
If you love fantasy/science fiction, this is awesome. A real hero with a noble heart, page-turning action, a writer who shows some depth, interesting twists, a cool ending, and no plot holes (for a change), made for a three day adventure where I got very little else done. A real winner!
Terrific writer and storyteller!.......2006-03-14
Fantasy/soft Sci-fi for young adult/adult readers. No foul language, no sex, some romance, descriptive torture and death.
"Destiny Feared" is a trilogy dealing with the innate mind powers of man. Those with the ability to project energy, to heal, to dream, or to see the future are considered dangerous freaks by most of the decaying empire. A small school of thinkers believe this mind sense might be a holy link to something far greater. The story follows the Emperor's sons, fifteen-year-old Anion and his twin brother, through the next twenty years. They are opposites in every way and the evil twin is usually trying to betray, kidnap, torture, or murder someone.
When young Anion discovers his own uncontrolled and extraordinary powers, mayhem ensues as he tries to save mankind from destruction. Throughout the excitement there are subtle spiritual and symbolic undertones that create a fascinating story and the result is just plain fun entertainment on a higher level. Throw in a few romances, the on-going mystery of the unknown Catalyst, a deadly riddle game, a number of tricky rescues, and some gung-ho pirates who are always anxious to pick a fight, and "Destiny Feared" is a phenomenal read.

In Rocco's 5 Minute Meals celebrity chef Rocco DiSpirito, ex-restaurant owner and one-time reality-show star, offers 190-plus recipes "made with 5 ingredients cooked in 5 minutes at no more than 5 dollars a serving." The recipe range covers all courses from appetizers to desserts, and includes fondues (which can be prepared speedily) paninni, pasta, and vegetarian dishes. Typical recipes include Warm Artichoke and Parmigiano Dip, Chicken and Cauliflower Stir-Fry, Salmon with Shiitake Mushrooms in Ginger-Soy Broth, and Apricot and Dried Cherry Pound Cake.
A good deal, right? But read the "fine print" and you'll discover that the five-minute rule doesn't include prep time, which can balloon when, for example, you're required to shell a pound of shrimp or slice zucchini into cups of half-moons. DiSpirito's five ingredient constraint is also fudged by his not counting basic items like salt, flour, and butter in ingredient tallies. Also, the dishes require dozens of sometimes hard-to-find convenience items like frozen pigs in a blanket, hot dog onions, precut and precooked potatoes, soup mixes, gelatin snacks, and even rotisserie chickens. These may speed the "cooking" process but can do nothing to make DiSpirito's "five-minute" dishes taste homemade. Though estimated costs are given per recipe, and all fall below the five-dollar-per-serving ceiling, a truer economy would involve buying and preparing fresh items, which, besides yielding superior results, cost relatively less, and won't leave the cook with, for example, leftover bottled buffalo-wing sauce or prepared hummus.
Even so, time-pressed cooks will undoubtedly jump at DiSpiritio's strategies, if even for occasional cooking, and many will find the "high-concept" recipes fun to make. Die-hard fans will also appreciate the many, many photos of the star chef in action--shopping, cooking, or just posing for the camera. --Arthur Boehm
Book Description
Rocco DiSpirito blasts through the rash of meals-in-30-minutes cookbooks with a revolutionary book sure to rock kitchens across America.
In Rocco's 5 Minute Flavor, every dish is ready in
5 minutes or less, using
5 ingredients, and all for under
$5 per serving. This is fast food with all of Rocco's celebrated expertise with flavor; food that no one will believe didn't take hours of work.
A James Beard Award, two restaurants, a network television show, and two cookbooks into his profession, Rocco left the day-to-day restaurant business after a long career and many, many hours behind the stove. He asked himself, "Can a chef find happiness in New York City without a restaurant?" The answer is yes.
Rocco began exploring the good life, having dinner parties at home and cooking for himself, instead of chomping down leftovers at 2 A.M. He discovered the keys to liberating the busy home cook: shop smart, keep a few key pantry items on hand, and get the most out of your stove -- cooking over high heat is the secret to meals in 5 minutes.
In addition, Rocco suggests menus for a range of events, from a simple gathering with friends to a lush holiday celebration; provides a short list (five items to be exact) of key kitchen equipment; and offers other tips to create the fastest, most flavorful food imaginable.
With 16 pages of full-color photographs and 80 black-and-white photographs

Customer Reviews:
Salty and gross.......2007-07-21
I saw Rocco on the Tony Danza Show hyping his book, so I bought it. With the exception of the Panini, every recipe I made was really gross. They use so many processed foods that it just tastes way too salty. Skip this one.
crazy good food.......2007-01-06
the salmon panini is to die for. mmm mmm mmm. i ate three whole ones.
Good Ideas, but Not so "Flavorful"..........2006-11-06
This book has good ideas to get you cooking no-frills, low-cost meals. These recipes are not flavorful off the bat so know your own seasonings and modifications to these starters.
Great for bachelors.
Easy, (relatively) fast flavor; mediocre book aesthetics.......2006-09-17
I've thoroughly enjoyed this book. The recipes deliver on flavor and although the "5-minute" promise is way too idealistic unless you are manic, the spirit-of-the-law, rather than the letter, is true on this point-- these recipes are indeed efficient to prepare. The secret's in the use of supplemental ingredients that are common, store-buyable and pre-prepared, which is extremely helpful. So far, only one ingredient I could not find in my Midwest USA grocery store. But, I looked it up on the internet and improvised with what I thought would be a comparable ingredient. However, unlike his first book Flavor, the ingredients herein are not esoteric and not only available in some ethnic village of New York City.
I must say, I felt so naughty using some store-bought, pre-prepared ingredients and then taking credit for cooking a flavorful dish...but, then I got over it, because at least I'm cooking for my family, right?
A word about the photographs. While there are 16 color photos of the finished products in the center of the book, the remainder of the book is interspersed with ocassional black and white pictures-- I cannot stress enough how I feel that the photographer missed the mark on artfulness. I was trying to give the photographer credit and imagine that he was attempting to create subtle, clever plays on light and dark (like classic b&w movies), but the photographs are insipid: One large b&w photo shows us a white bowl with black liquid "stuff" in it and a wisk obviously in blurry motion. Later, I see a very large close-up of chopped cabbage. Huh? We are also entertained by a 2-page, b&w, photo-spread of Rocco's apartment kitchen counter, I presume. Yawn.
So, why the big deal on the aesthetics? Because, let's face it, we like to see helpful photos of the finished dish.
Photos aside, these recipes are easy to create; the use of store-bought ingredients makes them much easier to create quickly after a long day at work; the flavor delivers.
5 Minutes to Cook 60 to prep - Horrible Photography!.......2006-06-08
I can only believe that people who left a 5 star review are friends or family of Rocco's.
The reason people are into quick cuisine is because they're busy, they have children, they work long hours, etc. His recipes promise 5 ingredients, 5 minutes, under $5.00. Ah! It's at least 30 minutes prep time on even the quickest recipes and some are up to 60 minutes and most are not family friendly. There is a recipe for scallops with lemon butter and the recipe never calls for cooking the scallops. Well yeah, I guess you could prepare it in 5 minutes when it's raw. Then you're suppose to get a teflon skillet as hot as humanly possible (which I've always read is a no no) and brown some butter with lemon zest then pour over the uncooked scallops. Gross! Then his 5 ingredients does not count for herbs, spices, oil, vinegars, flour, sugar, salt, pepper, butter, etc etc so there's another 5-10 ingredients per recipe that are not included in his "5" ingredients. And many of the 5 ingredients are packaged jello, canned cheese whiz, etc. Gross!
Most of the pictures are black and white and just absolutely horrible photography. There's a B&W picture taking up both pages of what appears to be a stock pot filled with who knows what. They picture is so dark and undefineable that the contents actually look gross. There are a few color, glossy pictures near the back of the book, not enough to give you a feel for the dishes.
And then to say thanks to your partner for putting out for you? Isn't that an open sexual innuendo? Gross.
Overall, don't bother. Book is poorly designed, recipes are so-so, and the photography is just horrible. How embarrasing for Rocco who I'm sure is a nice person, he seems to have a nice personality and I love his shows but forget this cookbook. He should be suing his publisher for putting this to print.

What's to eat? The Milk-Free, Egg-Free, Nut-Free Food Allergy Cookbook.......2007-09-11
My grand daughter is allergic to all dairy products and tree nuts. I did not know what to fix her for meals or desserts. This book really tells me all kinds of food available for anyone who are allergic to above mentioned. It is not difficult to prepare all recipes on this book . I am glad I found this cook book. Thanks to the author.
Very good cookbook for those with food allergies.......2007-05-15
This book has a ton of recipes. I've only tried a few, but they were each very good. My 2 year old son is allergic to eggs, milk and peanuts so this seemed like the perfect cookbook for us. The only problem is that he's at a very picky age right now, so most of these recipes he won't have anything to do with at this time. Some desserts and cookies are all I've made so far that he'll eat. I think as the years go by we'll get a lot more use out of this book.
Wonderful Book!.......2007-05-13
This cookbook is absolutely fantastic! It's so nice to have a cookbook that suits my daughter's dietary restrictions exactly, without having to substitute this or that. So far, I've tried only a handful of recipes, mostly cakes and cookies, but all were easy to make and delicious! Highly recommended!
Helpful for an Allergic Family.......2007-05-10
This cookbook has been helpful when looking for ideas to serve my family and guests.
BEST ALLERGY COOKBOOK!.......2007-04-12
This cookbook has made such a difference in my life! I am an allergy mom that was in desperate need to feed my son who has severe egg and peanut allergies. It is so nice to have such a variety of foods, dinner, breakfast, snack, desserts, etc that my sons can enjoy that are completely safe. And totally yummy! This Cookbook is the best out there!

Book Description
Millions of children across the country have food sensitivities or allergies, and the number is on the rise. And most of these children don't get to eat cookies, for fear of the reaction they might have from the wheat, or the peanuts. Imagine the feeling a young child must have as they stand there watching their friends munch on cookies just out of Mom's oven, while they have to make do with yet another carrot stick
.
Leslie Hammond knows that left-out feeling all too well. As a child she suffered from severe food allergies and would watch year after year as, when the birthday song had ended and she'd blown out the candles, her fancy party cake was whisked away and served to her friends, while she ate a dry rice cake. Now the mother of allergic children herself, Leslie vowed to spare her own children that trauma. She had developed over 100 recipes that will appeal to a kid's tastes. Unlike other food-allergy cookbooks already on the market, her recipes hardly ever call for the kinds of ingredients that would gross out any kid -- like tofu.
The book's recipes take into account all of the most common food sensitivities like wheat and gluten, peanuts, or dairy. Each recipe can be modified to fit the dietary needs to the child.
It's divided into three sections -- snacks, main dishes, and treats. Leslie and co-author Lynne Rominger also provide information about how to find what you need in a regular grocery store, instead of requiring a separate trip to the natural foods store. She writes from the perspective of an ordinary working mom, and doesn't design eating regimes that would take all day in the kitchen to satisfy.
With the recipes in this book, even the most sensitive child will get a cookie too.
Customer Reviews:
Awful!.......2007-09-29
This cook book was awful! It didn't help me one bit when I started dealing with my child's food allergies. I thought the recipes would come without having to make all of these modifications on my own. I would never suggest this book to a friend! (OR a stranger for that matter!)
Not good for dairy or eggs........2007-08-02
I am thankful that I borrowed this book from the library first. Almost EVERY recipe calls for butter, sour cream, milk, or egg. It is so bad it is almost funny. Example Buttermilk Pancakes - egg free variation: omit eggs. Dairy free variation - Replace milk with rice milk, and replace butter with margarine. All this book has is a collection of recipes that are not good for dairy allergic people with substitutions at the bottom of almost every recipe. I can do this with any recipe I don't need a special cookbook to tell me to replace milk with rice milk. When I read the cover of the book - More than 150 recipes that are: Wheat Free, Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Nut Free, Egg Free, and Low in sugar - I have to laugh. O and if you are allergic to nuts this book gives you some truly profound advice: Omit Nuts.
Best for wheat free.......2007-06-22
Luckily I read the reviews here first and checked out this book at my library before buying it. If your child has multiple allergens, I suggest you do the same. If you have relied on processed foods until now, this book may be helpful and her tone is certainly enthusiastic. However, if you're experienced in the kitchen, this book is a big waste of time and money. Just get out your Joy of Cooking and omit whatever your child is allergic too and you'll have this book.
Most-used cookbook I own.......2007-05-15
Since learning of my 6 year old's allergies a year ago, I have spent hours and hours trying to make "normal" food for him. I wish I would have tried this one first - it would have saved me a lot of time and money. The chicken nuggets, fish sticks, potato pizza, vanilla wafers, are among our favorites now. I highly recommend the book for anyone with kids. An extra plus is that the ingredients were already in my kitchen (white rice flour is common - easy to find, not as expensive as many specialty flours). I made one special trip for vanilla powder to make several of the recipes, and it is so worth it. I LOVE THIS BOOK.
Not what I expected.......2007-04-25
I was very disappointed in this cookbook. I should have done more reserach before I purchased it. Because nearly all of the recipes contain dairy and egg, I have avoided making anything for fear that by using substitutes, the recipe will not be the same. There are far better allergy cookbooks out there.

The Egg, Dairy and Nut Free Cookbook.......2007-01-13
To be honest I have only used one recipe from this cookbook and it didn't turn out all that yummy or well. I just don't find the recipes to seem that tasty or appealing. I would probably buy it again but I don't know if I would reccomend it.
Really great book - Thoroughly recommend!.......2006-08-17
My daughter, who is now four, has had egg, nut and dairy allergies since birth. Like the authors son, she was also allergic to my breast milk. I thought I knew it all when it came to providing meals/baking for her, but when I saw this book for sale I thought I'd buy it for interest and in a strange way to support the author who's been through what we have been (are are going) through. Well, I am really impressed and am very grateful to the author for writing it. I have tried 2 recipes which came out fabulously (blueberry muffins and banana muffins) and have the carrot cake baking in the oven while I type!! It look and smells like a success already! Other recipes I've tried for banana muffins have turned out a stodgy gooey lump, but the authors recipe for these were really lovely. Light, distinct pieces of banana and with a really pleasing golden crust which can be quite hard to achieve without eggs or dairy! I'm very happy and would easily serve these up to non-allergic visitors without needing to explain why they aren't quite up to scratch compared to a 'normal' muffin! The recipes use simple, storecupboard ingredients, and apart from a few recipes which use products not available in New Zealand (for eg milk-free whipped topping) I shall be working my way thru this book! A big thank to the author for this one!!

Theresa Kingma's Cookbook...A Must Have!.......2007-10-07
I have had "Dairy-Free, Egg-Free, Kid Pleasing Recipes & Tips" by Theresa Kingma now for 2 1/2 years. My sons both have food allergies, and this cookbook is my kitchen staple for them. I ended up ordering the book on CD because my copy was getting so worn. My mother, grandmother, and mother-in-law all have copies now too, so that they can bake goodies for my sons and bring them when they visit, or have things prepared for them when we go to visit. The recipes are so simple and kitchen friendly to use, and I think the results are delicious. I am now in charge of all the birthday cakes for our family using the simple chocolate cake recipe. Everyone raves about it! This book, and Theresa's insights really got me through the dark days after my first son's diagnosis with food allergies. This cookbook made me feel like I could do this, and I wasn't the only mother facing this challenge. I have always hoped to see this book selling somewhere on a large scale, and I was thrilled to see it here on amazon today. Highly recommended!
Fabulous purchase.......2007-09-14
This cookbook has simple recipes that are easy to follow, and delicious to eat. My allergic children are sometimes hard to cook for, and this book has made a big difference in our lives.
AWESOME.......2007-08-02
This cookbook has truly been wonderful. I now can cook meals for our whole family. I used to make my son something special and different. Now I don't have to say..."honey, you can't have what Mommy's eating". We love the super easy recipes! This book comes highly recommended and it's my favorite! The ingredients are common and the spices can be used in so many of the recipes.
Love This Cookbook! .......2007-07-10
Thank you for creating such a *great* cookbook! The recipes I have tried have all been *great* and it is filled with a wealth of other useful information from a mother who has risen above the challenges of allergy-free cooking. Even if we didn't have food allergies I would love the recipes in this cookbook. It is one of my very favorite food allergy cookbooks and one of the best cookbooks I own. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Love It!.......2007-06-02
Love this book! Finally stuff my munchkin can eat! And she loves it! The meatloaf is our fav.
Book Description
This book presents a thorough look at the multitude of fascinating and beautiful ceramic forms produced by the British potter George Jones and his firm, including majolica wares and "Abbey" blue and white transfer printed ceramics. Over 700 color photographs amply display the diverse table, tea, toilet, and ornamental ware types produced by George Jones and his manufactory from the mid-nineteenth century well into the twentieth. A detailed history recording George Jones's life as a potter, the contributions of his family members, and those of a number of artisans who designed and decorated the firm's distinctive wares provides hours of absorbing and enlightening reading as well. To help readers determine the age of their George Jones wares with accuracy, registration dates for many of the patterns and ceramic shapes are provided, along with the various manufacturer's marks and their dates of usage. Values for the wares, a detailed bibliography, and several appendices round out the book Geoffrey Godden has called "...the ultimate work on this Stoke firm."
Customer Reviews:
George Jones Ceramics.......2000-06-12
"George Jones Ceramics" has been well researched and is beautifully presented. It is about a major 19th century English pottery business, of which little was known before Robert Cluett's book. Archived collections and histories of nineteenth century potteries have generally been neglected in favour of older potteries and because of museum financial constraints. But they all have a place in the history of ceramics and until this book was produced there were fears that much information about George Jones Pottery would be lost forever. The best part of this beautiful book, for my family, is the history of George Jones' family and descendents which is included. George Jones was my husband's great grandfather.
